In short

The Dwadasamsa, or D12, is the divisional chart made by cutting each sign into twelve parts of 2°30', counted from the sign itself. BPHS reads "parents" from it and uses it in the condition for Panchottari Dasha. This app computes it for every planet and, with a birth time, the Ascendant.

What the term means

Dwadasamsa means "twelfth part" (BPHS writes Dvadashansh). It is the varga made by cutting each 30-degree sign into twelve parts of 2°30'. The count starts from the sign itself and runs through all twelve signs in order, so every sign holds a complete small zodiac of its own, beginning with itself.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 15 says the reckoning "commences from the same" sign, with no odd/even distinction, and names four presiding deities that repeat three times across the twelve parts. Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns it "parents". Ch. 7 Sl. 17-19 counts it among the six Shad Varga charts with a Vimshopak weight of 2. It also appears as a condition in the dasha chapter: BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 29-30 applies Panchottari Dasha to a Cancer Lagna that also falls in the Cancer Dwadasamsa.

How this app uses it

  • The part is the degree within the sign divided by 2.5, rounded down (parts 1 to 12); the count starts from the sign and moves one sign per part.
  • The alternate dashas calculator reads the D12 Ascendant to decide whether Panchottari applies, and states the Ascendant and its Dwadasamsa in its verdict.
  • The D12 sign is one of sixteen placements in this app's Vimshopaka bala (weight 0.5 of 20). A planet in the first part of its sign is vargottama here.

A small illustration

For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the Sun sits at Capricorn 5.46, the third part, which is two signs on from Capricorn: Pisces. Jupiter at Capricorn 2.09 is in the first part and stays in Capricorn, so it is vargottama. The Ascendant at Pisces 23.04 is in the tenth part, nine signs on from Pisces, which gives a D12 Ascendant in Sagittarius. That is not Cancer, so Panchottari's condition does not hold for this chart.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
