Two formulas, one for men and one for women, reduce your birth year to a Kua number and the four directions it names.

What this computes

The Kua number reduces your birth year to a single digit and then applies one of two formulas - the male one subtracts it from 11, the female one adds 4 - so the calculation has to know which of the two to use. This system has no gender-neutral version, so the page asks which to use and will not run until it is told. Four directions come back with the number, labelled for money and success, health, love and personal growth. A Kua of 5 is substituted, with 2 for men and 8 for women. A birth date before 5 February counts as the previous year, because the Chinese year turns at the first day of spring; the source gives no more precise date than that.

Run it on your details

For the Kua formula

The Kua formula is different for each, so the number cannot be worked out without it. This is the only calculator that asks, and nothing is saved.

No birth time needed here - the date alone is enough.

A worked example

For a woman born on 14 August 1994

The example uses the sample date with the female formula: 1994 reduces to 5, and 5 plus 4 gives a Kua of 9. That returns East for money and success, Southeast for health, North for love and South for personal growth.

Usage notes

  • Try to eat, sleep, work and be in that sector of your home.
  • Do as many activities as possible in that sector of your living/working space.
  • Face this direction when eating, working or sitting in your living room.
  • Sleep with the top of your head pointed in this direction.
  • Enter your home or office from a door that faces this direction.

How it is calculated

The year that feeds the formula is the full four-digit year, its digits added until one is left, so 1994 gives 23 and then 5. Whether a date falls before 5 February is checked on the calendar date you enter, and when it does, the previous year's digits are used instead. After the male or female step, the engine reduces again if the result runs past 9: a male year digit of 1 gives 10, which becomes a Kua of 1, and a female digit of 9 gives 13, which becomes 4.

The Kua then selects one of eight fixed direction sets - one each for 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 - naming a direction for money and success, health, love and personal growth. When the formula lands on 5, the result is reported as 2 or 8 with a marker that it was converted from 5, and the directions match those of 2 for men and 8 for women. Every result also carries the same five usage notes, about which way to face, sleep and enter.

This draws on Life With Number Magick - see the source

What it cannot tell you

  • The 5 February cut-off is fixed for every year, and the engine's own notes call it an approximation. A birth in early February sits right beside the boundary that decides which year is used.
  • Only the year, the side of 5 February and the chosen formula matter. Birth time and place are not used, so everyone of the same gender born in the same year window shares a Kua.
  • The directions are labels from a fixed table. The page does not know which way your home or desk faces, and the labels name areas of life, not outcomes it can promise.

Questions people ask

Why can a man and a woman born on the same day get different directions?
The two formulas start from the same year digit but move it in different ways. For 1994 the digit is 5: the female formula gives 9, which points East for money and success, while the male formula gives 11 minus 5, which is 6, and a Kua of 6 points West instead. In a year whose digit is 8, both give 3.
Does my birth time or birthplace change the Kua?
No. The engine reads only the calendar date - the year, plus the month and day to check the 5 February cut-off - and the formula you choose. A birth on 4 February 1994 counts as 1993, which gives 8 for women and 7 for men instead of 9 and 6.
What are the usage notes for?
They are five fixed suggestions for putting a direction to use: spending time in that part of your home, facing it when you eat or work, sleeping with your head toward it, and entering through a door that faces it. They are general, and the page does not check your space against them.

In depth

What this long-form adds to the Kua calculator

The calculator above takes a birth date and one of two formulas, and returns a Kua number with four labelled directions and five usage notes. The short copy above it already explains the two formulas, the 5 February cut-off, the substitution for a Kua of 5 and the limits of a lookup table. This section goes further: where the method comes from and what the source does and does not supply, the whole direction table laid out so you can see its structure, how the Kua moves through a nine-year cycle, how often each Kua actually turns up across seventy-six years of birth dates, the edge cases a careful reader should test, and how the Kua sits beside the other direction this app can show you. Every number below was produced by running this app's own engine, not typed from memory.

Where the Kua method in this app comes from

The engine names one source for everything it does: Numerology Masters Notes, the course material published as Life With Number Magick Part 2 by Rrachita Gupta for AIFAS, pages 183 to 186. Those pages present the Kua as a Feng Shui "personal lucky number" with four lucky directions. The engine's header is explicit that nothing in the calculation was added from elsewhere: the formula, the early-February edge case, the replacement numbers for a Kua of 5 and the direction table are all taken from those pages.

That matters for how you read the result. Feng Shui is not one book, and a reader who has met a Kua number on another website may have met a different variant. This calculator does not try to reconcile them. It reports what one documented source says, applies it the same way every time, and leaves the comparison to you. Where the source is vague - most notably on the exact date the Chinese year turns - the engine says so in its own comments rather than inventing precision.

It is also worth knowing what the Kua is not. It is not the Mulank or the Bhagyank, the two numbers most of this site's numerology is built on (see Mulank, Bhagyank and the Life Path). Those use the day, or every digit of the date. The Kua uses only the year, and the month and day only to decide which year counts. Two people born on the same calendar day in different years almost always have different Kuas; two people born months apart in the same Kua year, with the same formula, always share one.

The formula, step by step, as the engine runs it

  1. Decide the effective year. If the birth falls before 5 February - any date in January, or 1 to 4 February - the previous calendar year is used. From 5 February onward the birth year is used as written.
  2. Add the four digits of the effective year and reduce the total to one digit. Master numbers are not kept here: the engine calls the same reduceToDigit function the rest of the app uses, but with masters switched off, so a year whose digits total 29 goes 29, 11, 2 rather than stopping at 11.
  3. Apply the formula you picked. The male formula subtracts the year digit from 11; the female formula adds 4 to it.
  4. Reduce once more if the result is above 9. Under the male formula only a year digit of 1 does this (11 minus 1 is 10, which becomes 1). Under the female formula digits 6 to 9 do it (10, 11, 12 and 13 become 1, 2, 3 and 4).
  5. If the result is 5, replace it: 2 under the male formula, 8 under the female one. The result records convertedFrom: 5 so the page can say that it happened.
  6. Look up the four directions for the final number, or for the special 5-male or 5-female rows, and attach the five fixed usage notes.

Nothing else enters. Birth time, birthplace, your name, your Mulank and your Bhagyank play no part. The engine's only branch on anything other than the date is the formula, and if neither formula is chosen it returns nothing at all rather than guessing - which is why this is the one calculator on the site that asks you to pick.

Why the page asks for a formula, and what it does with the answer

The source gives two formulas, one labelled for men and one for women, and the engine's header records that it has no gender-neutral version. So the calculator cannot produce a number until it knows which to apply. The form's own note says the formula differs for each, that this is the only calculator that asks, and that nothing is saved. The answer travels with the single request that computes your Kua and is not stored.

For signed-in readers the same rule holds. The profile model has an optional gender field that exists for this feature alone; it is never required, it defaults to empty, and when it is empty the Kua is simply not calculated rather than assumed. If you are unsure which formula applies to you, the table further down shows both results for every year digit, so you can see each side by side before choosing.

From year digit to Kua, for both formulas

Because the Kua depends only on the reduced year digit and the formula, there are just nine possible inputs per formula. This table is every one of them, read straight from the engine. An asterisk marks a 5 that the engine replaced.

Every Kua the two formulas can produce. * = a 5 replaced by 2 (male) or 8 (female).

Three things fall out of this table. First, a year digit of 8 is the only one where both formulas agree, giving 3 either way. Second, the male formula reaches 2 from two different year digits, 9 directly and 6 through the replacement of 5; the female formula reaches 8 from two digits as well, 4 directly and 1 through the replacement. Third, neither formula ever returns a final Kua of 5. A 5 can be computed, but it never reaches the page as a number of its own.

The nine-year cycle, and a few years to check against

The year digit of consecutive years rises by one each year and wraps from 9 back to 1, so the Kua runs in a fixed nine-year cycle. Under the male formula it counts down - 9, 8, 7, 6, then a replaced 5, then 4, 3, 2, 1. Under the female formula it counts up - 6, 7, 8, 9, 1, 2, 3, 4, then a replaced 5. The engine's output for a stretch of recent years shows the pattern directly, using a June birthday so the February cut-off plays no part:

calculateKuaNumber() for 1 June of each year. The cycle repeats every nine years: 1986, 1995 and 2004 share a row, as do 1990, 1999 and 2008.

Notice that the year 2000 behaves like any other. Its digits total 2, exactly as 1991's do (1 + 9 + 9 + 1 = 20, which reduces to 2), so both formulas give the same Kua for the two years. The engine applies one rule to every century and makes no special case at the turn of the millennium.

Which years produce a Kua of 5

Because the replacement of 5 is the step most hand calculations get wrong, it helps to know exactly which years trigger it. Under the male formula a 5 appears when the year digit is 6, since 11 minus 6 is 5. Under the female formula it appears when the year digit is 1, since 1 plus 4 is 5. The engine's run over 1950 to 2025 lists them:

Female1954, 1963, 1972, 1981, 1990, 1999, 2008, 2017Kua 8, convertedFrom 5
Effective years, after the 5 February rule. Each list steps by nine years.

Remember that these are effective years. A woman born on 20 January 2000 is counted in 1999 and therefore lands on a replaced 5, while a woman born on 20 February 2000 is counted in 2000 and gets Kua 6. A man born on 10 January 1996 is counted in 1995 and gets a replaced 5 reported as 2; born on 10 March 1996, his year digit is 7 and his Kua is 4.

Checking a result by hand in four lines

You can verify any result the calculator gives with a pencil. Take 17 September 1972 under both formulas, a date that also appears on this site's Sepharial Grid page. It is after 5 February, so the year stays 1972. Its digits add to 1 + 9 + 7 + 2 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1. The male formula gives 11 minus 1 = 10, reduced to 1: Kua 1, with Southeast for money and success, East for health, South for love and North for personal growth. The female formula gives 1 plus 4 = 5, which is replaced by 8: Kua 8 with convertedFrom 5, giving Southwest, Northwest, West and Northeast. The engine returns exactly those two rows.

Do the same for 1 November 1990 and you reach the same two Kuas by a different route - the year 1990 also reduces to 1 (1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 10, then 1). Any two years nine apart, or any two years whose digits reduce to the same value, behave identically. If your hand result and the page's ever disagree, the first things to check are the February rule and whether you reduced all four digits of the year.

How often each Kua actually occurs

Because two year digits feed the same Kua in each formula, the Kuas are not equally common. Running the engine for every calendar date from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2025 - 27,759 birth dates - gives this distribution:

KuaMale formula: datesShareFemale formula: datesShare

So under the male formula almost one birth date in four lands on Kua 2, and under the female formula about one in five lands on Kua 8 - roughly twice the share of any other number. That is not a bug or a statistical claim about people; it is a direct consequence of folding a 5 into another number. It does mean that the direction sets for 2 and 8 are the ones you will meet most often if you run this calculator for friends and family.

The whole direction table, and its structure

The engine stores ten rows: one for each of the eight Kuas other than 5, and two special rows for a 5 under each formula. Each row names one compass direction for each of four labels. Here is the table exactly as stored:

KuaMoney and successHealthLovePersonal growth
1SoutheastEastSouthNorth

3SouthNorthSoutheastEast

8SouthwestNorthwestWestNortheast
9EastSoutheastNorthSouth
5, male formulaNortheastWestNorthwestSouthwest
5, female formulaSouthwestNorthwestWestNortheast
LUCKY_DIRECTIONS in kuaNumberEngine.js, from the source pages 183-186.

Read down the columns and a clear structure appears. Kuas 1, 3, 4 and 9 only ever use four directions between them: North, South, East and Southeast. Kuas 2, 6, 7 and 8 only ever use the other four: Northeast, West, Northwest and Southwest. Within each group of four Kuas, every direction appears exactly once in every column - for money and success, Kuas 1, 3, 4 and 9 get Southeast, South, North and East, one each. The table is two interlocking four-by-four squares.

The two rows for a Kua of 5 sit inside that structure rather than outside it. The 5-male row is identical, cell for cell, to the row for Kua 2, and the 5-female row is identical to the row for Kua 8. That is why the engine can report a converted 5 as 2 or 8 without any loss: the direction set you receive is the same either way. The convertedFrom marker exists so the page can be honest that your formula produced a 5 first.

A practical consequence: no two Kuas share a whole row, but the two groups never share a direction at all. If two people in a household fall into different groups, none of their four labelled directions coincide. If they fall into the same group, each of their directions belongs to the same set of four, distributed differently across the labels.

Reading each field the calculator returns

  • kuaNumber - the final Kua, always one of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 or 9.
  • convertedFrom - null for most results; 5 when the formula produced 5 and the engine replaced it. If you see it, your formula gave 5, and your directions are the 5 row for that formula, which match Kua 2 or Kua 8.
  • directions.moneyAndSuccess, directions.health, directions.love, directions.personalGrowth - the four labelled compass points for that Kua. They are labels for areas of life, taken from the source; the engine attaches no score or strength to any of them.
  • usageNotes - the same five lines for every result, described below.

There is no ranking among the four directions in the output. The source as transcribed gives a direction per label, not an order of importance, and the calculator does not invent one. If you want to use only one, the choice of which label matters most to you is yours.

The five usage notes, and how literally to take them

Every Kua result carries the same five notes, transcribed from the source: spend time - eating, sleeping, working - in that sector of your home; do as many activities as you can in that sector of your living or working space; face the direction when eating, working or sitting in the living room; sleep with the top of your head pointed toward it; and enter the home or office through a door that faces it.

They are general suggestions, not instructions tailored to your result. They do not change with your Kua, they do not say which of the four directions each one is meant for, and the calculator knows nothing about your rooms, your desk or your front door. Read them as the source's own illustrations of what "using" a direction means. Nothing on this page asks you to buy, install or rearrange anything, and nothing promises an outcome if you do.

The 5 February boundary in practice

The engine's comment on the cut-off is candid: the source gives 5 February as the Chinese "First Day of Spring" and no more precise per-year date, so the engine uses 5 February for every year. Births on 1 to 4 February, and every January birth, are counted in the previous year. That is 35 days of the calendar - a little under a tenth of the year.

Engine output for six dates. The second, third and fourth fall before 5 February and use the previous year.

The New Year's Day 2000 example is worth a second look. Under its own year it would have the same Kua as any other 2000 birth (male 9, female 6). Because it falls before 5 February it is counted as 1999, whose digits total 28, then 10, then 1 - and the female formula's 1 plus 4 lands on 5, which becomes 8. One date, three steps of the method, all visible.

If you were born in early February, run the calculator twice with dates either side of the 5th and compare. If the two Kuas differ, your result depends on where the year boundary really falls, which the source itself does not pin down. The honest reading in that case is that the calculator cannot settle your Kua more precisely than its source does.

The Kua beside the other direction on this site

The Numerology Profile and the signed-in Numerology page also show a "lucky direction". It comes from a completely different route, documented in section 8 of this site's numerology rules: your Mulank's ruling planet, looked up in a standard Navagraha table. Sun gives East, Moon Northwest, Mars South, Mercury North, Jupiter Northeast, Venus Southeast, Saturn West, and Rahu and Ketu both Southwest.

The two will often disagree, because they read different numbers. For the page's sample date, 14 August 1994, the Mulank is 5 (the day, 14, reduced), ruled by Mercury, so the profile's direction is North. The Kua under the female formula is 9, whose money-and-success direction is East and whose love direction is North; under the male formula it is 6, which names West, Northeast, Southwest and Northwest and does not include North at all.

Neither is a correction of the other. The Mulank direction is a single planetary association; the Kua is a four-way table from a Feng Shui source with its own year rule. This app shows both and labels each with its origin, in the same way it shows several compatibility systems side by side rather than averaging them away.

Two people, one home

A common reason to run the Kua is to compare members of a household. The engine has no household mode - each run is one date and one formula - but the table above makes the comparison straightforward. Take two partners born on 14 August 1994 and 4 February 1994, one using each formula. The first, female formula, gets Kua 9: East, Southeast, North and South. The second, male formula, is counted as 1993 and gets Kua 7: Northwest, Southwest, Northeast and West. They sit in opposite groups, so none of their eight labelled directions coincide.

Swap the formulas and the picture changes. The first date under the male formula gives Kua 6, and the second under the female formula gives Kua 8 - both in the Northeast-West-Northwest-Southwest group. Now every direction either of them is given comes from the same set of four, though under different labels: Kua 6 has West for money and success where Kua 8 has Southwest. The calculator cannot tell a household which of these readings to follow; it can only show each person's row clearly.

How the Kua connects to the rest of Astro Clock AI

The Kua is self-contained in this app: no other engine reads it, it does not feed the daily reading, compatibility or the convergence score, and it appears only on this calculator. The numbers it is easily confused with live elsewhere. Your Mulank and Bhagyank are on the Life Path calculator; the digits of your full date, counted cell by cell, are on the Lo Shu Grid; and a colour table read from the Bhagyank is on Lucky Colours. The free numerology tool brings the core numbers together on one page.

If you want to know what a single digit is said to carry when it appears as a Mulank or Bhagyank - which is a separate question from what it means as a Kua - the number pages go through each in turn, for example number 9 in numerology or number 2. The Kua tables do not attach personality readings to the number itself; the source pages this engine draws on use it only to select directions.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Using only the last two digits of the year. The engine adds all four digits. For 1994 that is 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 23, then 5. Adding only 9 and 4 gives 13, then 4, which leads to a different Kua.
  • Keeping a master number. A year whose digits sum to 29 or 38 reduces past 11 to 2 in this calculation. The Kua never uses 11, 22 or 33.
  • Forgetting the replacement of 5. A hand calculation that stops at 5 will look for a row the main table does not have. Use 2 under the male formula and 8 under the female one.
  • Ignoring the February boundary. A January birthday always counts in the previous year here; check that before comparing your result with anyone else's.
  • Reading the four labels as forecasts. They name areas of life the source associates with each direction. The page makes no claim about money, health, love or growth arriving from any compass point.

Limits worth keeping in view

Everything here follows from a single source's table and a fixed calendar rule. The calculator does not test the method, and nothing on this site presents a Kua as evidence of anything. Large groups of people share each result: under either formula, everyone born in the same Kua year window gets the same number and the same four directions. The approximation of the spring boundary is the engine's own, and so is the decision to apply one rule to every century. And because the source has no gender-neutral formula, the calculator can only offer the two it has. If you use the directions at all, they are best treated as one tradition's way of organising a room, held lightly.

For how this site handles sources and states uncertainty across every calculator, see the methodology page; the full list of books the engines draw on is on Sources.

More questions about the Kua number

Why is there no Kua 5 in my result?
Because the source replaces it. If your formula produces 5, the engine reports 2 under the male formula or 8 under the female one and sets convertedFrom to 5. The direction set you get is the one the source gives for a 5 under that formula, which is identical to the row for 2 or for 8.
My birthday is in January. Is my Kua wrong?
It is calculated from the previous year, on purpose. The source treats the Chinese year as turning at the first day of spring, and the engine places that on 5 February. A January birth in 1995, for example, is counted as 1994.
Do two people born in the same year always share a Kua?
Only if they use the same formula and fall on the same side of 5 February. Under different formulas they share a Kua only when the year digit is 8, which gives 3 either way.
Which Kua is most common?
Across every birth date from 1950 to 2025, Kua 2 under the male formula (23.6% of dates) and Kua 8 under the female formula (21.1%). Each receives two year digits because of the replacement of 5; every other Kua receives one.
Is the Kua the same as my lucky number on the Numerology Profile?
No. The profile's favourable numbers and direction come from your Mulank and its ruling planet. The Kua comes only from your birth year and the chosen formula. They are independent and frequently differ.
Does the year 2000 or later use a different formula?
Not in this engine. It applies the same two formulas to every year, adding all four digits of the year. A 2000 birth after 5 February has a year digit of 2 and gives 9 under the male formula and 6 under the female one, exactly as 1991 does.
Which of the four directions matters most?
The calculator does not say, because the source as transcribed does not rank them. Each direction is attached to a label - money and success, health, love, personal growth - and the choice of which to pay attention to is left to you.
Is my answer to the formula question stored?
Not from this calculator. The choice travels with the one request that computes your Kua. Signed-in profiles have an optional gender field used only for this feature; leaving it empty means the Kua is not calculated rather than guessed.

Nothing you enter here is saved. The calculators that run without an account store nothing at all.
