Ninety windows over thirty days, scored against your chart. The best three come back.

What this computes

Pick one of six undertakings - marriage, business launch, property purchase, travel, a new job or an investment - and this samples three windows on each of the next thirty days and scores all ninety against your own chart. Each score weighs the Moon's nakshatra against the list classically favoured for that activity, the house the Moon transits counted from your ascendant, the tithi and paksha, the weekday, whether the window overlaps Rahu Kaal, and your personal day number. The three highest come back, banded excellent, good or usable with care, with the reasons that moved them. It needs a birth time and a resolved birth place, because the houses are counted from your ascendant and there is no ascendant without both.

Run it on your details

Each candidate day is scored against your own chart using this activity’s rules. The engine holds rules for these six only.

The ascendant needs both a time and a place.

A worked example

For someone born on 14 August 1994 at 06:42 in Ahmedabad

The sample person, born 14 August 1994 at 06:42 in Ahmedabad, asked for New job. The top window falls on Thursday 5 November 2026 at 3:30 PM IST and scores 78: the base of 34, the Moon in Uttara Phalguni (+16) and in the 2nd house from the Ascendant (+14), tithi 27, which is not on the avoided list (+5), a waning Moon (-4), Thursday, a favoured day for a new job (+7), and a Personal Day of 3 (+5); the last point is the tie-break. The other two are the same morning, at 9:15 and 6:40 AM, both 77: the same nakshatra, but with the Moon still in Leo, the 1st house, which is also on the New job list, and tithi 26. No other window in the thirty days scanned scored higher.

This example was computed on 2026-10-12. Transiting planets move every day, so today’s transit positions will differ from these - the birth-chart part does not change.

How it is calculated

The engine looks at three fixed windows on each of the next 30 days - 6:40, 9:15 and 3:30 IST, each 90 minutes long - skips any that has already closed, and scores each one from a base of 34. The Moon's nakshatra adds 16 if it is on the list for the chosen activity and takes off 6 if not; the Moon's house, counted from your Ascendant, adds 14 if the activity favours it and takes off 20 if it is the 6th, 8th or 12th. A tithi outside the avoided list (4, 8, 9, 14 and their waning counterparts 19, 23, 24, 29) adds 5; one on it takes off 15.

A waxing Moon adds 7 and a waning one takes off 4; a weekday the activity favours adds 7; a window that overlaps Rahu Kaal on the fixed 06:00-18:00 IST day loses 25; and a Personal Day from your birth date of 1, 3, 5, 6, 8 or 9 adds 5, any other takes off 4. Up to 2 more points come from how far the Moon has moved through its nakshatra, which only breaks ties. The best three are returned, rounded; 78 and above reads Excellent window, 62 and above Good window, and anything lower Usable, with care.

What it cannot tell you

  • The windows are printed in Indian Standard Time and Rahu Kaal is taken from a fixed 06:00 to 18:00 IST day, not from sunrise where the event will happen. The place you enter is your birth place, which fixes your Ascendant; it says nothing about where you will sign, travel or marry.
  • Only three windows a day are scored. A better moment between them - say 12:00 - is never looked at, so a top score means the best of these 90 or so samples, not the best minute of the month.
  • Neither the avoided-tithi list nor the activity tables cite a source in the engine, and the score reads no hora, no choghadiya, no planet but the Moon and no dasha. It ranks windows against one another; it is not a full electional chart.

Questions people ask

What does the chosen activity change in the score?
Three lists: the nakshatras favoured for it, the houses from your Ascendant the Moon should transit, and the favoured weekdays. New job, for example, favours nine nakshatras including Chitra and Uttara Phalguni, the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, and Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The tithi, paksha, Rahu Kaal and Personal Day rules are the same for every activity.
Can a window that overlaps Rahu Kaal still be recommended?
It can, but rarely near the top: the overlap costs 25 points, more than any single factor adds. With every other factor in its favour a window can reach 90; with Rahu Kaal it stops at 65, which still reads Good window, and its reasons then include "Overlaps Rahu Kaal - best avoided".
Does the list change if I run it again tomorrow?
Yes. The 30 days are counted from the moment you ask, so each day one day drops off the front and one is added at the end, and a window that has already closed is never offered. The example above was computed on 9 October 2026; run today, it would start from today.

In depth

The form above returns three windows. This long read explains where those three came from and what the ones you did not see looked like. It sticks to the public calculator - its thirty-day run, its six activities and its need for a birth time - and leaves the classical background, the full factor table and the day panel to the Muhurat feature page, which covers them in depth. Every number below was produced by running the engine that serves this page on one invented person, called Meera here: born 22 March 1988 at 06:45 IST in Pune. She is not a real person. Her chart rises in Pisces at 9.33 degrees, and her Moon is in Taurus, in Krittika. The sweeps start at noon IST on 9 October 2026.

What the calculator form sends, and what comes back

The calculator will not run until four things are present: a birth date, a birth time, a birth place that resolves to coordinates, and one activity. The activity is gated the same way as the date. The server rejects a request without it and names the six it accepts: Marriage, Business launch, Property purchase, Travel, New job and Investment. There is no free-text activity and no default; a seventh undertaking would need its own lists in the code, and none exists.

The birth time and place are needed for one reason. The engine counts the Moon's house from your ascendant, and an ascendant needs both. The signed-in Muhurat page can fall back to counting from the natal Moon sign when no time is known; this public calculator does not offer that fallback, because its entry is marked as needing an ascendant. The birth place is used only to cast that ascendant. It does not set the clock of the windows. Every window is printed in IST on a fixed 06:00 to 18:00 grid, whatever city you were born in, because the place where you will sign or travel is not something the form asks for.

When you press the button, the engine walks thirty calendar days in IST starting from that moment. On each day it scores three 90-minute windows that open at 6:40 AM, 9:15 AM and 3:30 PM. A window that has already closed is skipped, and one still open is kept. That is why Meera's run, started at noon, scored 88 windows rather than 90: the 6:40 and 9:15 windows on 9 October had already ended. All the scores are sorted, and the three highest come back, each rounded to a whole number and banded Excellent (78 and up), Good (62 to 77) or Usable with care (below 62).

Three windows a day is a sample, not a scan

The calculator never looks at 11:00 AM or 1:00 PM or any evening hour. A good moment that falls between the sampled windows is simply not scored. If you need a specific hour on a specific day, the day panels on the choghadiya and hora pages divide the whole day; this calculator compares days, not minutes.

Six activities on one chart

The quickest way to see what the activity choice does is to hold the chart and the dates still and change only the activity. Here is the top window for each of the six, for Meera, over the same 88 windows.

findMuhurats() for the sample chart, 30 days from 9 Oct 2026 12:00 IST. The last column counts all 88 scored windows by band.

Two dates dominate: 21 October and 26 October. On the morning of 21 October the Moon was in Dhanishta, in the waxing half, on the 10th tithi, and in Meera's 11th house - a house that four of the six activities list as supportive. On 26 October it was in Ashwini, on the full-Moon tithi 15, in her 2nd house. Those two mornings top the list for five activities because the factors that do not depend on the activity (tithi, paksha, Rahu Kaal, Personal Day) were all favourable, and the activity-dependent ones mostly agreed.

The same morning can still score differently by activity. 21 October at 6:40 AM scores 89 for Investment and 82 for Property purchase and Travel. The 7-point gap is the weekday: it was a Wednesday, and Wednesday is on the Investment weekday list (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) but not on the Property list (Monday, Thursday, Friday) or the Travel list (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday). Marriage did not pick that morning at all, because Dhanishta is not on its nakshatra list, which costs 6 points instead of earning 16.

The third window for Marriage is worth a look: Saturday 10 October, 3:30 PM, score 71, in Hasta, on tithi 30 - the new Moon. A window on Amavasya can rank in the top three because tithi 30 is not on the engine's avoid list. The feature page explains why that list stops at 29; this calculator simply applies it.

The nakshatra lists, read from the other side

The code stores one list of favoured nakshatras per activity. Read the other way round - one row per nakshatra - the lists show which Moon positions can earn the 16 points at all. If you know your target date's Moon nakshatra from the panchang calculator, this table tells you at once which activities it suits in this engine's terms.

ACTIVITY_RULES in muhuratEngine.js, pivoted by script (run4.mjs).

A few patterns stand out. The three "Uttara" stars and Rohini sit on five lists each, and Anuradha on all six. Pushya, often spoken of as a good star for beginnings, is on four lists but not on Marriage. Marriage alone holds Magha, Swati, Mula and Uttara Bhadrapada. Ten stars - Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Purva Phalguni, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Purva Ashadha, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada - are on no list, so a window with the Moon in any of them starts 6 points down for every activity. The Moon spends roughly a day in each nakshatra; you can read about any one of them on its own page, such as Anuradha or Rohini.

None of the classical texts this app holds - BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha and the modern case-study volume - contains a nakshatra-by-activity table. The lists are labelled in the code as "the classical muhurat layer" and are not attributed to a book. They are the least sourced part of the score, and they carry the largest single swing: 22 points between a listed and an unlisted star.

The house lists, checked against the texts

The second-largest factor is the house the transiting Moon occupies, counted from your ascendant. A house on the activity's list adds 14. The 6th, 8th and 12th subtract 20, unless that house is on the activity's own list - the list is checked first. Every other house adds nothing. Here are the lists beside what the two classical house catalogues in the corpus say about each listed house.

ActivityHouses that add 14Houses that subtract 20What the texts list under those houses
Marriage1, 5, 7, 9, 116, 8, 12BPHS Ch. 11: 7th wife, travel, trade; 11th income, prosperity. Daivajna Vallabha Ch. 2 lists marriage under the 12th.
Business launch1, 2, 3, 10, 116, 8, 12BPHS: 2nd wealth; 10th profession, honour; 11th income. Daivajna Vallabha: 11th success in enterprises, gains from trade.
Property purchase1, 2, 4, 9, 116, 8, 12BPHS: 4th conveyances, lands and buildings. Daivajna Vallabha: 4th entry into a house.
Travel3, 9, 10, 116, 8, 12BPHS: 3rd journey; 9th visits to shrines; 10th living in foreign lands. Both texts also list travel under the 7th.
New job1, 2, 6, 10, 118, 12BPHS: 10th profession (livelihood); 6th is listed for enemies and ulcers, not work.
Investment2, 5, 8, 116, 12BPHS: 2nd wealth; 8th wealth of the dead; 11th income. The code comment adds 5th for speculation.
ACTIVITY_RULES and scoreMoment(); BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2-13; Daivajna Vallabha Ch. 2.

Most of the lists line up with BPHS Ch. 11, which gives the indications of each bhava in turn: the 4th for "lands and buildings", the 10th for "profession (livelihood)", the 11th for "income, prosperity". Two departures are worth knowing. Travel is listed by both texts under the 7th house, which BPHS gives as "wife, travel, trade" and Daivajna Vallabha as "coming and going", yet the 7th is not on this engine's Travel list, so the Moon there earns nothing for a journey. And Daivajna Vallabha places marriage among the 12th house's matters, while the engine treats the 12th as one of the three houses that cost 20 points for every activity. The engine's lists are its own reading; it does not claim either text as their source.

Two lists override the general penalty. New job lists the 6th, so a Moon in the 6th adds 14 there instead of losing 20 - a 34-point turn. Meera's third New job window, Thursday 5 November at 9:15 AM, scores 77 with the Moon in her 6th house; for Marriage that same Moon would have pulled the score down. Investment lists the 8th, which every other activity penalises. The engine's comment gives the reason as the 8th governing other people's money; BPHS's wording for the 8th is "wealth of the dead", among longevity and battle.

BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 11 asks the astrologer to "base the effects on Candr also", as on the Lagna. That is the classical footing for counting from the Moon sign when there is no ascendant, which the signed-in page does. This calculator counts only from the ascendant. If you want to see the house you are counting from, the birth chart calculator prints it.

One morning taken apart

Meera's top Marriage window, Saturday 24 October at 6:40 AM, printed 82. The engine's function for scoring any moment (sameDayWindows) also scores the other two windows of that day, which lets the parts be seen side by side.

The nakshatra and the Moon's house held all day. What moved was everything tied to the clock. Saturday's Rahu Kaal on the fixed clock runs 9:00 to 10:30 AM, so the 9:15 window overlaps it and loses 25. By 3:30 PM the 13th tithi had ended and the 14th - on the avoid list - had begun, a 20-point turn from +5 to -15. The tie-break rose through the day because the Moon was moving deeper into Uttara Bhadrapada; it never decides anything bigger than the order of near-equal windows.

A second day shows the house moving instead. On Wednesday 21 October the Investment windows scored 88.97, 55.17 and 55.66. At 6:40 AM the Moon was still in the sign that is Meera's 11th house; by 9:15 it had crossed into the next sign, her 12th. The nakshatra (Dhanishta) straddles that sign line, so the 16 points stayed while the house term swung from +14 to -20. A sign change in the middle of a morning is enough to drop a window from the top of the list to the bottom band.

What changes inside a single day

Over a full year of Meera's windows (363 complete days), the engine's own outputs show how often the factors move between the first sampled window at 6:40 AM and the last at 3:30 PM.

  • The tithi differed on 137 of the 363 days. A tithi lasts a little under a day on average, so on a large share of days the morning and afternoon windows sit on different lunar days, and possibly on opposite sides of the avoid list.
  • The nakshatra differed on 127 days. Because a nakshatra is about 13 degrees and the Moon covers roughly that much in a day, about a third of days show a change. The nakshatra calculator shows where the Moon sits within its star.
  • The Moon's house differed on 55 days. The Moon spends about two and a quarter days in each sign, so a sign change falls inside the 6:40-to-3:30 span on roughly one day in six or seven. You can watch the Moon's sign through the month on the gochar calculator.
  • Rahu Kaal touched the 6:40 AM window on 52 days, the 9:15 AM window on 103 days and the 3:30 PM window on 104 days. On the fixed clock only Monday's Rahu Kaal (7:30 to 9:00 AM) reaches the early window, while two weekdays reach each of the others.

That last point explains a pattern in the averages. Across the year the 6:40 AM window averaged about two to three points higher than the other two for every activity (for Marriage: 42.8 against 39.9 and 40.2). It is not that mornings are classically better in this engine; the early window simply collides with Rahu Kaal less often. The weekday and personal day apply to all three windows of a day equally.

A year of windows for one chart

The calculator looks thirty days ahead. To see how unusual its top three are, the same engine was run over 365 days for Meera, which gives 1,093 windows per activity.

Between 3% and 7% of windows reach Excellent, and roughly four in five are banded Usable with care. That is by design: the base score is 34 and a window has to collect several independent agreements to climb. Marriage has the most Excellent windows for this chart because its nakshatra list is the longest (eleven stars) and its house list includes the 1st, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th - five houses. Travel has the fewest houses (four) and the longest gap: for one stretch of almost seven weeks, no Travel window for Meera reached 78.

Because the calculator only looks thirty days ahead, the month you ask in matters. Twelve consecutive thirty-day Marriage runs for the same chart gave between 1 and 10 Excellent windows each.

Marriage, sample chart, findMuhurats() with the default 30 days (run2.mjs).

Every month offered at least one Excellent window for this chart, and the best score in a month ranged from 80 to 90. The highest a window can print is 90: the base plus every favourable term (34 + 16 + 14 + 5 + 7 + 7 + 5 = 88) plus the tie-break of up to 2. So a 90 is a window on which every factor the engine reads agreed - not a promise about the event.

How much the birth time matters here

The birth time enters the score through one door: the ascendant sign, which fixes how the Moon's house is counted. On Meera's birth date in Pune the ascendant was Aquarius until 06:15, Pisces from 06:16 to 07:50, and Aries from 07:51. Any birth time inside that 95-minute Pisces span gives exactly the same three windows, because the engine uses whole signs - the degree of the ascendant does not enter the count. A time recorded at 06:45 or at 07:45 makes no difference.

Cross a boundary, though, and the list changes completely. With the birth time moved to 06:00 (an Aquarius ascendant) every house shifts by one, and the top Marriage windows became Monday 12 October at 9:15 AM and 3:30 PM (both 89, Swati, Moon in the 9th) and Saturday 17 October at 6:40 AM (83, Mula, 11th). None of the three Pisces-chart windows appears.

run3.mjs. The no-time row is what the signed-in Muhurat page computes; this calculator requires a birth time and does not produce it.

The no-time row is included to show why the calculator does not offer it. Counted from the Taurus Moon, two of the three dates happened to match, but for different reasons: 24 October is the 1st house from the ascendant and the 11th from the Moon, and both are on the Marriage list. That agreement is a coincidence of this chart, not a rule. If your birth time is uncertain by more than a few minutes, find out how close your ascendant is to a sign edge on the lagna calculator before trusting a Muhurat list, and read what an unknown birth time changes.

The personal number in the score

The last term is not astrological. Your Personal Day number is computed from your birth day and month and the calendar date of the window in India: the Personal Year is the birth day plus birth month plus the year, reduced to one digit; the Personal Month adds the month; the Personal Day adds the day. Days that reduce to 1, 3, 5, 6, 8 or 9 add 5; 2, 4 and 7 subtract 4. The personal year calculator shows the first link of that chain for any date.

Two details matter for reading it. The engine reduces every Personal Day to a single digit, so an 11 or a 22 is read as 2 or 4 and loses 4 points; the numerology book the feature page cites keeps 11 and 22 as days of their own. And because the Personal Day depends only on the date, all three windows on a day carry the same number - it can separate days, never hours. Its swing is 9 points, a little more than the weekday's 7 and much less than the nakshatra's 22.

Reading the three windows you get back

  • Read the reasons, not only the score. Each window lists the factors that moved it, and a missing reason tells you something too: a window with no nakshatra line had the Moon in a star not on that activity's list.
  • Check whether two of the three windows are the same day. For Meera's Business launch run, two of the top three were 26 October (89 and 79). The 10-point gap was the paksha changing from Shukla to Krishna as the full-Moon tithi ended between morning and afternoon.
  • A Good window below an Excellent one is not a warning. The bands are cut at 62 and 78 on the rounded score; an Excellent 78 and a Good 77 differ by one point.
  • A window in the top three can still carry a negative reason. Meera's Property purchase list includes 19 October at 3:30 PM (70) on tithi 9, which the engine avoids - it ranked third because the nakshatra, house and paksha outweighed it.
  • The clock is IST on a fixed day, not your local sunrise. Outside India, convert the times; for the day's sunrise-based divisions, use the day panel.
  • The weekday is the IST weekday. For a weekday-level view of any date, the hora calculator and choghadiya calculator divide the day by its lord.

What the classical texts in this library say about choosing a moment

The corpus is thin on electional rules, and the page should not pretend otherwise. The clearest general statement is in BPHS Ch. 89 Sl. 1-7, inside a chapter on remedial rites: they are to be done in a Muhurta "when Candr and stars are favourable", on a day free of "Rikta-Bhadra Dosha". That names the two things this engine weighs most - the Moon and its nakshatra - and a class of tithis to avoid, without listing them. The engine's avoid list (tithis 4, 8, 9, 14 and their dark-half counterparts 19, 23, 24, 29) is not taken from that sloka; its own comment says it cites no text and was left unchanged for want of one.

The house logic is better supported. BPHS Ch. 11 and Daivajna Vallabha Ch. 2 both give house-by-house catalogues, and the activity lists borrow from them, with the departures shown above. Rahu Kaal and the choghadiya do not appear in any of these books; the engine pins its Rahu Kaal order against a published modern panchang instead, as the methodology page describes. The full list of texts the app holds is on the sources page.

Limits of this calculator, beyond the ones above

  • It does not read the other person. A marriage window is scored on your chart alone. Comparing two charts is what the kundli matching calculator does, and it does not pick dates.
  • It does not look at the planets other than the Moon. Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the ascendant of the moment itself are not scored; nor are eclipses, sankranti, Bhadra karana or the yogas of the panchang.
  • It does not know where the event will happen. Rahu Kaal is cut from a fixed 06:00 to 18:00 IST day, which can differ from a sunrise-based Rahu Kaal in a given city and season.
  • It ranks windows; it does not forecast outcomes. A score of 90 says every factor this engine reads agreed. It says nothing about the people, the contract or the weather.
  • It prescribes nothing. There are no remedies, rituals or gemstones in the result, and none would change the score.

Where this calculator connects

For a fuller view of the same windows, with a 45-day sweep and the day panel beside them, use the signed-in Muhurat feature. To compare two people rather than two dates, see kundli matching. To check the Moon's sign and star on any single day, the Moon sign calculator and the panchang are the direct tools, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains how the two relate. The Rahu Kaal calculator gives the sunrise-based version of the window this engine cuts from a fixed clock.

Why does the muhurat calculator need my birth time when the panchang does not?
The panchang describes a day for everyone. This calculator scores a day for you: the Moon's house is counted from your ascendant, and an ascendant needs a birth time and place. Without them the form will not submit.
Why did I get 88 windows scored instead of 90?
The run starts at the moment you press the button. Windows on the first day that have already closed are skipped, so a run started in the afternoon scores fewer than 90. A window that is still open is kept.
Two of my three muhurat windows are on the same day. Is that a mistake?
No. The engine ranks all windows together and does not spread them across days. When one day's nakshatra, house and weekday are all favourable, two of its windows can outrank every other day's best.
My birth time is approximate. Will the muhurat list change if it is off by twenty minutes?
Only if those twenty minutes cross an ascendant sign boundary. For the sample chart, any time from 06:16 to 07:50 gave identical results; 06:00 gave a completely different list. Check how close your ascendant sits to a sign edge.
Why is the 7th house not supportive for Travel when the texts link it to journeys?
The engine's Travel list is the 3rd, 9th, 10th and 11th. BPHS Ch. 11 and Daivajna Vallabha Ch. 2 both list travel under the 7th as well, so this is a point where the code's list is narrower than the texts. The page reports it; the calculator applies the list as written.
Can I pick a time other than 6:40, 9:15 or 3:30?
Not in this calculator. Those three IST start times are the only ones it samples. For an hour-by-hour view of a chosen day, use the choghadiya or hora calculators, which divide the whole day.
Does the place I will travel to or marry in change the muhurat score?
No. The form asks for your birth place only, to cast your ascendant. Every window is on the fixed IST clock, and Rahu Kaal is cut from 06:00 to 18:00 IST rather than from a local sunrise.
How often does a 90-point muhurat window occur?
Rarely, but not never. 90 is the ceiling, reached only when every factor agrees. For the sample chart the top score in twelve successive thirty-day Marriage runs ranged from 80 to 90, reaching 90 in three of them.

Nothing you enter here is saved. The calculators that run without an account store nothing at all.
