Dosha and transits

All nine grahas' signs today, read from your natal Moon and not your ascendant.

What this computes

Gochar reads today's transits from your natal Moon sign rather than from your ascendant. It places all nine grahas - the seven plus Rahu and Ketu - in the sign each holds now, gives the house that falls in counted from your Moon, and marks it favourable, testing or unremarkable, with separate classical rule sets for benefics, for malefics and for Saturn. Each line also carries the graha's degree in its sign, whether it is retrograde, and roughly how many days that graha needs to cross one sign - so a passage just starting reads differently from one about to end. Your birth date alone is enough, though with no birth time the Moon is taken at midday, and it changes sign about every two and a quarter days.

Run it on your details

A birth time is optional. Without one this is read at local noon on your birth date - and the Moon moves about 13 degrees in a day, so add the time if you know it.

A worked example

For someone born on 14 August 1994

The example reflects the sky on the date it was computed, so every position in it has moved since. On that date the Sun at 15.12 degrees of Virgo fell in the 12th from the sample person's Moon and was marked testing, the Moon in Gemini fell in the 9th and was marked favourable, and Mercury in Libra fell in the 1st and was marked testing.

How it is calculated

The engine takes the sidereal positions of all nine grahas at the moment you run the page and counts from your natal Moon's sign to each graha's sign, with the Moon's own sign as 1. Whole signs are counted, so a graha's degree within its sign never changes its house. Before any other rule is checked, the 11th from the Moon is marked favourable for every graha and the 4th testing for every graha. The Sun, Mars, Rahu and Ketu are then graded as malefics: testing in the 1st, 8th and 12th, favourable in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th, neutral elsewhere.

Saturn has its own branch: the same testing and supportive houses, with wording that calls its 1st, 8th and 12th the most intense and names its 4th Ardha Ashtama Sani as well. Jupiter, Mercury and Venus - and the Moon, which the code grades with them - are testing in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th, favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th, and neutral otherwise. The benefic and malefic rule sets, the 4th- and 11th-house rules, the intensified flag and the days-per-sign averages all come from S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology, Chapter XXXI, as the engine cites it.

This draws on Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology - see the source

What it cannot tell you

  • If your Moon changed sign during your birth day, as the sample's did, the noon placement can land in the wrong sign and shift every house count on this page by one.
  • Durations are fixed averages - 913 days for Saturn, 45 for Mars - not read from the real sky, so they cannot tell you when a passage actually ends, least of all around a retrograde.
  • Each verdict rests only on the graha and its house from your Moon. The engine weighs no dignity, aspects, Ashtakavarga bindus or running dasha.

Questions people ask

Why is Mercury marked testing when it is a benefic?
In this engine even the benefics are graded testing in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th from your Moon. In the example, Mercury in Libra fell in the 1st from the sample person's Moon and was marked testing for that reason. A benefic's favourable positions here are the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th.
What does the intensified flag mean?
It marks the one house per graha named in the engine's combination table: Saturn in the 1st from your Moon, Ketu 2nd, Jupiter 3rd, Mercury 4th, Sun 5th, Venus 6th, Mars 7th, Moon 8th and Rahu 9th. It sits beside the verdict rather than replacing it, and names a pattern, not a fixed outcome.
Why count from the Moon and not the ascendant?
The engine follows its cited rule that transit results are read from the natal Moon's sign, which is also why a birth date is enough. The app's Ashtakavarga transit reading is a separate calculation that counts from the ascendant, so the two can grade the same graha differently.

In depth

What this long-form adds to the calculator above

The calculator above prints nine rows - one per graha - with a house counted from your natal Moon and a verdict for each. This section sits underneath it and covers what the short copy above does not: where the classical idea of Gochara comes from in the texts this app draws on, exactly how the engine turns a sky and a Moon sign into a verdict, how to read every field and every note the calculator can return, a worked example run against the real sky on 2 October 2026, and the limits a careful reader should keep in view. Every number below was produced by this app's own engine in scripts run for this page, not typed from memory.

Two limbs of timing: dasha and transit

In its chapter on transits (Ch. 7, "Research on Transits", p. 307-308), Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II describes predictive astrology as having two limbs, dasha and transit, and argues that a single dasha system cannot time an event unless it is checked against the transits prevailing at the time. Elsewhere in the same volume (Ch. 6, p. 229) the author puts the relationship as a clock: dasha results are the hour hand and Gochara results the minute hand. The running period says which themes are open; the transit says when, inside that period, they tend to move.

BPHS works the same way inside its own dasha chapters. In Ch. 57 (Sloka 24-27½), describing the Antardasha of Venus within the Mahadasha of Saturn, it adds that if Jupiter is favourable in transit during that sub-period the results improve further, and that a favourable Saturn in transit brings Raj Yog effects. The transit there is not a separate prediction; it is a condition laid over a period that is already running. Saravali makes a related point in Ch. 41 (Sloka 9): the Sun ripens the results of a dasha and the Moon sustains them, which is why the Moon's transit position when a dasha begins is to be considered.

That is the frame for this page. Gochar does not tell you which chapter of life you are in - the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the article on what a Mahadasha actually is do that. It reads which way the moving sky leans against your birth Moon right now, so that it can be laid over the period your dasha says is running, down to the Antardasha and Pratyantar level.

Why the count starts from your Moon

BPHS opens its Ashtakavarga chapter (Ch. 66, Sloka 1-4) with Maitreya asking for a method by which even an ordinary person could judge happiness and sorrow from the grahas in transit, and Parashara notes (Sloka 13-15) that the effects of the twelve bhavas are judged both from the Lagna and from the Moon. Both reference points are classical. The engine behind this page uses one of them, deliberately: it follows S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology, Ch. XXXI (p. 117-118), as its code cites it, which reads transit results from the sign a transiting graha occupies counted from the natal Moon's own rashi.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a birth date is usually enough, because the Moon's sign can be found from the date alone far more often than the ascendant can - the Lagna calculator needs an exact time and a resolved place, and without them there is no ascendant at all. Second, the reading is anchored to the graha BPHS Ch. 3 (Sloka 12-13) calls the mind, so it is a reading of how the sky meets your inner weather rather than of the houses of your life as the ascendant lays them out.

The app has a second transit reading that counts from the ascendant: the Ashtakavarga transit strength inside the signed-in Kundali, built on the Ashtakavarga points of your own chart. The engine's own comment calls the two complementary lenses on the same moving planets rather than overlapping ones. Because they start from different points they can grade the same graha differently on the same day, and neither is wrong for doing so.

Advanced Predictive Astrology uses still other starting points. It quotes Mukunda Daivajna's Jyotish-Tattvam (Ch. X, verses 25-26, on p. 310) for rules counted from each graha's own natal position - Saturn bringing fortune in the 9th from where natal Saturn sits, Venus conjugal happiness in the 7th from natal Venus, Jupiter a child in the 5th from natal Jupiter - and it counts Rahu's good houses from the Moon, the Sun or the ascendant (p. 318). None of those frames is computed here; this page counts from the natal Moon and nothing else. If your Moon sign is not certain, start with the Moon Sign calculator and the article on Moon sign and nakshatra.

The three rule sets, house by house

The engine sorts the nine grahas into three groups. Jupiter, Mercury and Venus are the classical benefics, and the Moon is graded with them. The Sun, Mars, Rahu and Ketu are graded as malefics. Saturn has its own branch. Two rules sit above all three: the 11th from the Moon is favourable for every graha, and the 4th is testing for every graha. The table shows the verdict each group receives in each house counted from your Moon.

12thtestingtestingtesting - "most intense" wording
From computeGochara() and gocharaHouseVerdict() in server/src/services/kundaliEngine.js. "Neutral" is the engine's verdict word; for a benefic in the 3rd or 6th its note says "indifferent".

Three things in that table are easy to miss. Saturn's verdicts are identical to the other malefics' in every one of the twelve houses; what its separate branch changes is the wording, which calls its 1st, 8th and 12th its most intense positions and names its 4th as Ardha Ashtama Sani as well. A benefic is never merely "unremarkable" here: its twelve houses are fully covered by the favourable, testing and indifferent lists. And a malefic is favourable in fewer houses than a benefic - four against six - but neutral in more: the 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th, where, as the code comment notes, the source gives malefics no rule at all, so the engine says nothing rather than inventing a verdict.

The 4th deserves a word because it was once wrong. The engine's comment records that Kannan lists the 4th twice - once among the bad positions for benefics and again for malefics - and that an earlier version of the code tested only the 1st, 8th and 12th, so every graha in the 4th fell through to "unremarkable", the opposite of the text. The correction grades the 4th as testing but without the "most intense" wording the source keeps for the 1st, 8th and 12th. The 4th house, Sukha Bhava is the house the classical texts tie to home and peace of mind; the 11th house, Labha Bhava, the house of gains, is the one every graha is favourable in here; and the 8th house and 12th house pages cover the other two positions every graha finds testing.

Why the Moon and Mercury are fixed as benefics

BPHS Ch. 3 (Sloka 11) lists the Sun, Saturn, Mars, the decreasing Moon, Rahu and Ketu as malefics and the rest as benefics, adding that Mercury becomes a malefic when it joins a malefic. Ch. 34 (Sloka 8-10) calls the Moon middling in benefice and Mercury neutral - benefic with benefics, malefic with malefics. The introduction to this app's edition of the Bhrigu Sutras says the same of the Moon: the waxing Moon is a benefic and the waning Moon a malefic.

The Gochar engine applies neither condition. It grades the transiting Moon with the benefics in every phase - its comment says the Moon appears in neither of Kannan's two lists and takes the benefic rules because the file counts it among the benefics - and it grades Mercury as a benefic whatever Mercury travels with. That is a simplification, stated here so it can be checked: a reader following BPHS strictly would grade a waning transiting Moon, or a Mercury travelling with Saturn, by the malefic column instead. The Panchang calculator shows the day's paksha if you want to know which half of the month the transiting Moon is in. The learn pages on the Moon and on Mercury cover both grahas in full.

The intensified flag, and the second list it comes from

Beside the verdict, every row carries an intensified flag, true or false. It comes from a different list in the same chapter: Kannan p. 118, as the engine cites it, names one house per graha where that graha's transit is classically read as especially hard. The engine flags the position rather than repeat the source's language about losses and worries, and it leaves the verdict untouched. Because the two lists are independent, they do not always point the same way.

Only three of the nine flags fall on a testing verdict. Five fall on neutral and one - Ketu in the 2nd - falls on favourable. On 2 October 2026 that last case was live for everyone with a Cancer Moon: Ketu at 3.42 degrees of Leo stood in their 2nd, graded favourable by the malefic rule and flagged intensified by the combination list at the same moment. The engine does not resolve that clash, and this page will not pretend to; both rules come from the same chapter as the engine cites it. The second source disagrees in one place. Advanced Predictive Astrology reports a Tamil palm-leaf list (p. 311) that matches the engine for Saturn, Jupiter, the Sun, Venus and Mars, puts Mercury in the 2nd rather than the 4th, and says nothing about the Moon, Rahu or Ketu.

How long a passage lasts: the averages against the sky

The approxDurationDays column is a fixed number per graha, which the engine's comment gives as Kannan's own figures: Sun 30 days, Moon 2.25, Mars 45, Mercury 30, Jupiter 365, Venus 30, Saturn 913, Rahu and Ketu 548 each. The introduction to the Bhrigu Sutras gives matching round figures for three of them: Saturn about two and a half years in a sign, the nodes moving backward at 19 degrees 20 minutes a year and staying about 18 months in a sign, and the Moon completing the zodiac in 27 days 7 hours 43 minutes - a little under 2.3 days per sign.

Averages are honest about what they are, but a reader planning around one needs to know how far a real passage can stray from it. So for this page the app's own position functions were scanned day by day and every sign change resolved to the minute.

GrahaEngine average (days)An actual passage, from this app's own positions

Ketu548Leo over exactly the same dates, because the engine keeps Ketu 180 degrees from Rahu
Minute-resolution scan of currentTransits() in astrologyEngine.js, run for this page. Its positions are accurate to a few arcminutes (astronomy.js), so a crossing can differ from a printed almanac by hours, and by more near a station.

The lesson is in the slow grahas. Saturn's total time in Pisces comes to 919 days, close to the 913-day average, but it arrives in two separate stays with four and a half months in Aries between them - and for a reader whose Moon is in Libra, Pisces is the favourable 6th while Aries is the neutral 7th, so Saturn's verdict changes three times across that one boundary. Jupiter's 350 days in Cancer are spread over twenty months. For anything that needs a real end date, use the degree in the row and the dated alerts on the signed-in Timing page, not the average.

Retrograde: what the flag means, and what it does not change

The retrograde field is computed, not looked up. For Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn the engine compares each planet's geocentric longitude half a day before and half a day after the moment of the reading, and marks it retrograde when the motion between them is backward. The Sun and Moon are set to false because neither ever appears retrograde from Earth. Rahu and Ketu are set to true because the nodes always move backward through the zodiac - which is also how the Bhrigu Sutras introduction describes them.

The verdict never reads that flag. A retrograde Saturn in your 6th gets the same verdict as a direct one. The classical material treats retrogression as something that matters for timing rather than for the house grade: Advanced Predictive Astrology counts it among the moments that set events moving - alongside combustion, a planet rising and a change of sign (p. 308) - and reads a retrograde transit as a pause, in which promotions or transfers are held up for a while and move once the planet turns direct (p. 325-326). The engine reports the flag and leaves the reading to you; the Daily dashboard, described below, does use it, subtracting one point from that graha's day score.

Stations fall close together around the date this page was written. By this engine, Venus turns retrograde at 07:38 UTC on 3 October 2026 and direct on 14 November; Mercury is retrograde from 24 October to 13 November 2026; Saturn, retrograde since 26 July 2026, turns direct on 11 December; Jupiter is retrograde from 13 December 2026 to 13 April 2027; and Mars turns retrograde on 10 January 2027. A page run on 2 October shows Venus direct; the same page run on 4 October shows it retrograde, with the same sign and the same verdict.

The degree inside the sign

Houses here are counted in whole signs, so a graha at 0.1 degrees of a sign and one at 29.9 degrees of the same sign land in the same house and get the same verdict. What the degree tells you is where in the passage the graha stands. Saturn at 17.33 degrees of Pisces on 2 October 2026 had covered a little over half of the sign; the scan above puts its first exit on 2 June 2027.

Saravali adds three refinements in Ch. 53 (Sloka 9-10), at the end of its Ashtakavarga chapter. A graha transiting a sign with more benefic Ashtakavarga points gives auspicious results and one with fewer gives inauspicious results. The dignity of the sign tilts the balance - exaltation, own and friendly signs make the good predominant, debilitation and enemy signs the bad. And each graha gives its transit effect at a particular part of the sign: the Sun and Mars at the beginning, Jupiter and Venus in the middle, Saturn and the Moon at the end, and Mercury throughout. The engine applies none of the three. It prints the degree so that a reader who follows Saravali can apply the last one by eye.

Advanced Predictive Astrology reports a degree-based reading of Sade Sati too (p. 311): it begins when Saturn is 45 degrees behind the natal Moon and ends when Saturn is 45 degrees past it. The Sade Sati calculator uses the whole-sign rule instead - the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon - so the two can disagree by weeks at either end.

The note column draws on eleven sentences, and which one appears is fixed by the graha and the house. The 11th rule is checked first and the 4th rule second, so the group sentences only ever appear in the houses left over.

  • Any graha in the 11th: "the 11th from your Moon is classically favourable for every planet transiting it".
  • Any graha in the 4th: the sentence that the source lists the 4th among the bad positions for benefics and malefics alike, with "for Saturn this is also Ardha Ashtama Sani" added when the graha is Saturn.
  • Saturn in the 1st, 8th or 12th: "the most intense of Saturn's transit positions", calling for patience and consolidation.
  • Saturn in the 2nd, 3rd or 6th: "a supportive transit position for Saturn" - steady, disciplined progress.
  • Saturn in the 5th, 7th, 9th or 10th: "a classically unremarkable transit position for Saturn".
  • Sun, Mars, Rahu or Ketu in the 1st, 8th or 12th: "more testing from your Moon", where caution serves better than pushing forward.
  • Sun, Mars, Rahu or Ketu in the 2nd, 3rd or 6th: "a good transit position for a natural malefic" - gains through direct effort.
  • Sun, Mars, Rahu or Ketu in the 5th, 7th, 9th or 10th: "a classically unremarkable transit position".
  • Jupiter, Mercury, Venus or the Moon in the 1st, 8th or 12th: "more testing even for a natural benefic".
  • Jupiter, Mercury, Venus or the Moon in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 10th: "classically favourable" - happiness, recognition or financial ease.
  • Jupiter, Mercury, Venus or the Moon in the 3rd or 6th: "a classically indifferent transit position".

Read the verdict words as what they are: classical labels attached to a position. "Testing" means the texts read that position as one that asks for steadiness rather than new commitments; "favourable" means they read it as supportive. Neither is a forecast of an event, and nothing on this page attaches a remedy to either - the app does not prescribe gemstones, rituals or donations.

Worked example: the sample birth date on 2 October 2026

The worked example on this page uses 14 August 1994 with no birth time and no place. With no time the engine reads the natal Moon at local noon, and with no place that is noon India time. Run for this page, the Moon on that date stood at 20.70 degrees of Libra at 00:00 IST, at 27.76 degrees of Libra at noon (Vishakha, pada 3), crossed into Scorpio at about 15:49 IST, and reached 4.80 degrees of Scorpio by 23:59. Anyone born that day before roughly a quarter to four in the afternoon has a Libra Moon; anyone born after has a Scorpio Moon. Given no time, the page uses Libra.

The sky, read at 12:00 IST on 2 October 2026: the Sun at 14.86 degrees of Virgo (Hasta), the Moon at 27.81 of Taurus (Mrigashira), Mercury at 8.12 and Venus at 14.24 of Libra (both Swati), Mars at 8.20 of Cancer (Pushya), Jupiter at 25.62 of Cancer (Ashlesha), Saturn at 17.33 of Pisces and retrograde (Revati), Rahu at 3.42 of Aquarius and Ketu at 3.42 of Leo. Here is that one sky read from each of the sample's two possible Moons.

computeGochara() for a Libra and a Scorpio natal Moon against currentTransits() at 2026-10-02T06:30Z.

Reading the Libra column: three favourable verdicts (Jupiter in the 10th, Saturn in the 6th, Ketu in the 11th), four testing (the Sun in the 12th; the Moon in the 8th, which is also its intensified house; Mercury and Venus both in the 1st, the Moon's own sign) and two neutral. The slow grahas carry the weight of a reading like this because they stay: Saturn is favourable here, retrograde at 17.33 degrees, until it first leaves Pisces in June 2027, and Jupiter stays favourable when it moves into Leo on 30 October 2026, because Leo is the 11th from Libra. The fast rows will have changed within weeks - the Sun leaves Virgo on 17 October.

Reading across to the Scorpio column: five of the nine verdicts change - the Sun, the Moon, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Same sky, same date of birth, a Moon one sign further on, and more than half the rows read differently. That is the largest single sensitivity on this page, and it is why a birth time matters even for a calculator that runs on a date.

The same thing happens on the transit side within a single day. The worked example shown on this page was computed later on 2 October and already has the Moon in Gemini at 1.58 degrees - the 9th from Libra, and favourable. By this engine the Moon crossed from Taurus into Gemini at 10:12 UTC, 15:42 IST, so for a Libra Moon the Moon's row went from testing-and-intensified to favourable within one afternoon, while nothing else in the table moved far enough to change.

The same sample, forward in time

Because the transits are read at the moment you press the button, this page cannot be pointed at a future date. The function underneath can. Running the same computeGochara() for a Libra Moon at noon IST just after each sign change the scan found gives this sequence.

The forward alerts on the signed-in Timing page apply a stricter filter to the same function. They scan only Jupiter, Mars, Rahu and Ketu - Saturn's sign changes feed the Sade Sati and Ashtama Sani alerts instead - and raise an alert only when the verdict actually changes and the new verdict is not neutral. Run for this sample with a 120-day horizon, the alert engine returned exactly two Gochara alerts: Mars turning favourable, dated 13 November 2026, and Rahu turning testing, dated 6 December 2026. It raised nothing for Jupiter's move into Leo, which leaves a Libra Moon's verdict unchanged, or for Ketu's move into Cancer, which lands on neutral. Its scan resolves a crossing to within a day, which is why its dates can sit a day after the minute-level crossings in the table.

Twelve Moon signs under one sky

The same sky reads differently for every Moon sign. This table is computeGochara() for each of the twelve natal Moon signs at 12:00 IST on 2 October 2026, with the Saturn periods the Sade Sati and Ashtama Sani engines report for the same moment.

computeGochara(), computeSadeSati() and computeAshtamaSani() in kundaliEngine.js at 2026-10-02T06:30Z. The transiting Moon changed sign at 15:42 IST that day, so an afternoon run differs in the Moon's row for every sign.

Reading across: Virgo and Capricorn Moons collect six favourable verdicts each, Cancer Moons five testing ones. The Daily Guidance dashboard can name a day "Opportunity" only when, among other conditions, at least five grahas read favourable here - on this sky that half of the condition held for Aries, Gemini, Virgo and Capricorn Moons and for no one else. Taurus is the odd row: three intensified flags, every one of them on a neutral verdict.

When Gochar and Sade Sati seem to disagree

Look at the Aquarius row. Saturn reads favourable in the 2nd from the Moon, while the Sade Sati engine reports the setting phase of Sade Sati for the same person at the same moment. Both are rules from the same source as the engine cites it: Sade Sati, at Kannan p. 118, is Saturn in the 12th, 1st or 2nd from the Moon, and the malefic list counts the 2nd among the good houses for every malefic, Saturn included. The engine reports both rather than choosing between them.

The second source takes a side. Advanced Predictive Astrology gives Saturn's good houses from the Moon as the 3rd, 6th and 11th only (p. 311) - not the 2nd - which agrees with the Sade Sati reading. The same page calls the 10th from the Moon a period of gain for Saturn, where this engine stays neutral. And it reports (p. 312) that Sade Sati makes little difference to people whose natal Moon is placed with Saturn, a condition neither engine checks.

The other Saturn rows agree where you would expect: Pisces Moons have Saturn in the 1st, testing and intensified, in the peak phase of Sade Sati; Aries Moons have it in the 12th, testing, in the rising phase; Leo Moons have it in the 8th, testing, as Ashtama Sani; and Sagittarius Moons have it in the 4th, testing, with a note naming Ardha Ashtama Sani - the same period the Ashtama Sani calculator reports. For any question that is really about Saturn, the Sade Sati calculator is the more specific tool, and it also reports whether your Moon changed sign during your birth date, which this calculator does not. The learn pages on Saturn in Vedic astrology and the Saturn Mahadasha go further.

Rules from the sources that this engine does not apply

Gochara in the texts is wider than one house table. Listing what the engine leaves out, and where each rule is stated, makes the boundary of this page something you can check.

Even the house lists themselves differ between sources. For Jupiter, Advanced Predictive Astrology gives the good houses from the Moon as the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th (p. 310); this engine adds the 10th. For Rahu it gives the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon, the Sun or the ascendant, and calls Rahu bad over the Moon sign and in the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 12th from it (p. 318); this engine has Rahu favourable in the 2nd and neutral in the 5th, 7th and 10th. Neither list is the only classical one, and the page above follows Kannan as its code cites him. The learn pages on Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu cover each graha beyond its transit.

Birth-time sensitivity, in numbers

The calculator needs only a date, and for the transit half of the reading that is fully true: the positions are geocentric sidereal longitudes, the same for every reader at the same instant, so where you happen to be when you press the button changes nothing. It is not fully true for the natal Moon. Measured with this engine over every calendar date from 1970 to 2015 - 16,801 days on India time - the Moon changed sign between 00:00 and 23:59 on 7,373 of them, 43.9 percent. On those dates the noon reading is right for some birth times and wrong for others, and a wrong Moon sign shifts every house on this page by one. In the sample, that changed five of nine verdicts.

Unlike the Moon Sign and Sade Sati calculators, this one does not report whether your Moon changed sign during your birth date. So if you have no birth time, run the Moon Sign calculator first: if its start and end of day agree, this page's noon reading is safe; if they differ, read this page twice, once for each sign, or see what to do when the birth time is unknown. Your natal nakshatra is even more sensitive - the same 1970-2015 scan found the Moon changing nakshatra inside 95.8 percent of dates - which matters for the Nakshatra calculator but not for this page, which counts whole signs.

The place matters only through the clock. A birth time is read on the timezone of the place you give; with no place, India time (UTC+5:30) is assumed and the result says so in its timezoneAssumed field. For a birth outside India, give the place, or the noon used will be India's noon rather than your local one. When your Moon sign here differs from another app's, the article on why apps disagree on your nakshatra walks through the usual causes - the time, the ayanamsa and the zone.

What changes each time you run it

The transit positions are taken at the instant the server handles your request; nothing is cached. The Moon's row is the one that changes most often - every 2.1 to 2.2 days in the scan above. The Sun's changes about monthly, as do Mercury's and Venus's except around a retrograde, when either can stay two months or more in one sign, as both did in Libra in late 2026. Mars changes every month and a half or more, Jupiter roughly yearly, Saturn every two and a half years or so, and the nodes every eighteen months, always moving backward. Your natal Moon, once fixed by your birth details, never changes. That is why the worked example on this page carries the date it was computed: by the time you read it, at least the Moon's row has moved.

Two runs a few hours apart show slightly different degrees but usually the same verdicts, except in the Moon's row and, near a station, a retrograde flag. On 2 October 2026 both happened within a day: the Moon changed sign at 15:42 IST, and Venus turned retrograde the next morning.

How Gochar feeds the rest of Astro Clock AI

The same computeGochara() function runs in five other places, and in each it is read, never recomputed with different rules, so the verdicts cannot disagree between pages.

  • Daily Guidance: the Dynamic Today Kundali Engine builds each graha's day score from a short list of named terms. Gochara supplies two of them: plus 2 for a favourable verdict or minus 2 for a testing one, and plus 1 when the position is intensified, which there marks the graha as more prominent that day. The others are the graha's Shad Bala, minus 1 if it is retrograde today, minus 1 if it is combust in your birth chart, and a bonus if it is your running Mahadasha or Antardasha lord. Each score lists the facts it was built from.
  • Kundali: the signed-in chart shows today's Gochara for all nine grahas and a seven-day scan. Each day of the scan is condensed to one line - the intensified graha if there is one, otherwise the first non-neutral graha in the order Sun, Moon, Mars and onward. For the Libra sample the week from 2 October read "Moon - testing" and then "Sun - testing" six days running, because the Sun comes first in that order and stayed in Virgo; the full table on this page is where the other eight rows are.
  • Timing: the dated forward alerts described above - Jupiter, Mars, Rahu and Ketu, raised only when a sign change flips the verdict to something other than neutral.
  • WhatsApp updates: a message trigger fires when a slow graha - Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu or Mars - changes sign, and only when the new position reads non-neutral or is intensified. A neutral sign change, as the code puts it, is astronomy, not news.
  • Muhurat: the muhurat windows are scored partly on the house the transiting Moon occupies - from your ascendant when a birth time is on file, and from your natal Moon otherwise, the same reference point this page uses.

Limits worth keeping in view

The section above lists three limits: a noon Moon can sit in the wrong sign, the durations are averages, and each verdict ignores dignity, aspects, Ashtakavarga and the running dasha. Six more follow from the code itself.

  • Only now. There is no date selector; the transits are always those of the moment you run the page. Future positions are available only through the signed-in seven-day scan and the Timing alerts.
  • The mean node. Rahu and Ketu are the mean lunar node. The engine's own note says the true node differs from it by up to about 1.88 degrees across 1970-2015, and no text in this app's library says which node a rule was written for. On 2 October 2026 Rahu stood 3.42 degrees into Aquarius, further than that from the boundary, so its sign was the same either way; a node within two degrees of a sign boundary might not be.
  • Position accuracy. Positions come from the standard Meeus algorithms and the JPL/Standish orbital elements, accurate to a few arcminutes - not from the Swiss Ephemeris, as the methodology page states. That only matters when a graha stands within a few arcminutes of a sign boundary, but it is also why a crossing date here can differ from a printed almanac by hours.
  • Fixed benefic classes. The Moon is always graded as a benefic, whatever its phase, and Mercury always as a benefic, whatever it travels with, against BPHS Ch. 3 and Ch. 34.
  • One frame only. Houses are counted from the natal Moon and nothing else - not from the ascendant, not from the natal grahas, not in any divisional chart.
  • A label, not a forecast. A testing verdict is not a prediction that something will go wrong, and a favourable one is not a promise; both are the classical grade of one position, one row of nine.

More questions

Why does Saturn read favourable for me when the Sade Sati calculator says my Sade Sati is running?
That happens in one position only: Saturn in the 2nd from your Moon. The malefic list this engine uses counts the 2nd among the good houses for every malefic, Saturn included, while Sade Sati treats Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon as one period. Both rules are in the source as the engine cites it, and the engine reports both rather than choosing. On 2 October 2026 this was the case for every Aquarius Moon. Advanced Predictive Astrology lists Saturn's good houses from the Moon as the 3rd, 6th and 11th only, which sides with the Sade Sati reading of the 2nd.
Can I see Gochar for a future or a past date here?
No. The transits are taken at the moment you run the page. The same function runs forward in the signed-in Timing alerts, which date each slow graha's next verdict-changing sign change, and in the Kundali's seven-day scan.
Why is Rahu always shown retrograde, and the Sun never?
Rahu and Ketu are the Moon's nodes, which move backward through the zodiac, so the engine marks them retrograde by convention - the Bhrigu Sutras introduction describes their motion as always retrograde, at about 19 degrees 20 minutes a year. The Sun and the Moon never appear retrograde from Earth, so they are stated as false rather than left blank. For the other five the flag is computed from their real motion across the surrounding day.
Does a testing verdict mean something will go wrong?
No. It is the classical label for a position the texts read as asking for steadiness rather than new commitments. It takes no account of dignity, aspects, Ashtakavarga or your running dasha, each of which the classical texts weigh, and it is one row of nine. The app attaches no remedy to it.
Why does the duration say 913 days when Saturn will actually stay a different length of time?
The column is a fixed average per graha, not a reading of the sky. Scanned with this app's own positions, Saturn's current stay in Pisces runs 795 days from March 2025 to June 2027, followed by four and a half months in Aries and a second stay of 124 days - 919 in total, but in two pieces. Use the degree and the Timing alerts for real dates.
I entered my birth time and place. Does the calculator use my ascendant now?
No. A time moves your natal Moon to your real birth minute, and the place fixes the clock that time is read on, but the houses on this page are always counted from the Moon's sign. The ascendant-based transit reading is the Ashtakavarga transit strength in the signed-in Kundali, and your ascendant itself is on the Lagna calculator.
Another app gives me a different Moon sign. Which one does this page use?
The sidereal Moon with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, at your birth time or, without one, at local noon on your birth date. Differences between apps usually come from the time or its absence, the ayanamsa, or the timezone - see why apps disagree on your nakshatra.
Why is the transiting Moon graded like Jupiter rather than like Saturn?
The engine puts the Moon with the benefics in every phase, because its source lists the Moon in neither of its two groups and the file counts it as a benefic. BPHS Ch. 3 (Sloka 11) calls the decreasing Moon a malefic, so a strict BPHS reading would grade a waning transiting Moon by the malefic column. This page states the simplification rather than hiding it.
When Gochar and the Ashtakavarga transit reading disagree, which does the tradition weigh more?
BPHS Ch. 72 (Sloka 30-31) treats the Ashtakavarga as paramount: a sign auspicious in Ashtakavarga needs no transit check, and only a sign that is not should be checked by transit effects. Saravali Ch. 53 (Sloka 1) says the Ashtakavarga was set out precisely to evaluate the effects of transits in day-to-day life. The app shows both readings and does not merge them.
Does it matter where I am when I run the page?
No. The transit positions are geocentric sidereal longitudes, the same for every reader at the same instant. Your location today plays no part; only your birth place, through the clock your birth time is read on, affects your natal Moon.

Nothing you enter here is saved. The calculators that run without an account store nothing at all.
