The 12th house is the last of the twelve, and its Sanskrit name says plainly what it does. Vyaya means expenditure: what goes out. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) uses that name throughout, and Saravali, which gives most houses two names, gives this one only Vyaya (Rasi chapter Sl. 26-27). It is the twelfth sign counted from your Lagna, which makes it the sign that rose just before you were born.

Modern astrology has turned this house into several different things at once: foreign settlement, isolation, sleep, spirituality, liberation. This page separates what the classical sources say from what was added later. The main source is BPHS, which gives the house its own chapter (Ch. 23) and twelve slokas on its lord (Ch. 24). The Bhrigu Sutras are used for planets placed in it. To follow along, open your chart in the birth chart calculator. You need a birth time, because houses do not exist without an Ascendant.

How to read the harsh lines

The old texts speak bluntly about poverty, sin and the afterlife. This page reports those statements as a record of what the texts contain and how their rules are built. They are not predictions about your life, and this app does not issue verdicts about anyone's character or what follows death. Body and health associations are reported as the text gives them and are not medical advice.

What the 12th house signifies

BPHS defines the house in half a sloka, Ch. 11 Sl. 13: from Vyaya Bhava one knows about expenses, the history of enemies, and one's own death. That is the entire primary definition. Three items, and only the first is what the house is named for. Foreign lands, sleep, hospitals and spirituality are not in it.

Some of those later themes do have roots in Parashara's own chapter on the house. Ch. 23 speaks of beds and scented articles (Sl. 1-4), of wandering from country to country (Sl. 11), of expenses on religious grounds (Sl. 14) and of final emancipation (Sl. 10). So bed comforts, travel and liberation are classical, but they appear as results of particular combinations, not as a list of things the house automatically gives.

The Bhrigu Sutras commentary in this corpus gives the long list in circulation today: loss and impediments, restraint and limitation, waste and extravagance, expenses, investments, donations and charities, separation from family, going to far away places, sorrow, poverty, imprisonment, secret enemies, confinement in hospital, fraud, scandal, the feet, the left eye and left ear, comforts of bed, debts, life in a foreign place, and Moksha. The commentator himself points readers to a later work, Uttara Kalamrita, for the full list, which tells you where much of it comes from.

Advanced Predictive Astrology, a modern case-study book, sums up the two faces in one line: in its 'lower octave' the 12th signifies food, bed and the comforts of the couch, and in its 'higher octave' moksha, which is why that book calls it the moksha sthana (Vol. II p. 71-72). It adds that the house is best left unoccupied, and that benefics there cause spending on good things and prudent expenses.

Two labels at once: Dusthana and Apoklima

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 sorts the twelve houses into groups, and the 12th falls into two of them. It is an Apoklima, a cadent house, with the 3rd, 6th and 9th. It is also a Dusthan, an 'evil' house, with the 6th and the 8th. Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 repeats both groupings, calls the three Dusthanas the Trikas, and states the working rule: association with Trikas will inflict evils, while Kendras and Konas turn even evil into auspiciousness.

The Apoklima label has a measurable consequence. In the strength scheme of BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5, a planet in a Kendra gets full Kendradi Bal, one in a Panaphara half, and one in an Apoklima a quarter. So a planet in the 12th starts with the lowest positional score of the three classes before anything else is counted. This app's Shad Bala calculator shows the house type beside each planet.

In this app's code the two labels are resolved in a fixed order. The function houseCategory() tests Kendra, then Trikona, then Dusthana, then Panapara, then Apoklima, so the 12th is always reported as 'Dusthana'. The Apoklima membership is still true; it is simply the less informative of the two labels, and the engine shows the one that changes the reading.

Why the house before the Lagna is the house of loss

The Bhrigu Sutras commentator gives the logic in his note on the Moon: the 12th is the twelfth from the 1st, which signifies birth, so it represents the end. The same counting is used across the texts. BPHS Ch. 34 explains the 8th lord's bad name by pointing out that the 8th is the twelfth from the 9th. The house behind any house is read as what that house spends.

Which planet rules your 12th house

This app uses whole-sign houses: the sign of your Ascendant is the 1st house and the sign before it is the 12th. The planet that owns that sign is your 12th lord, and every planet except the Sun and Moon owns a second sign as well. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 makes that second house decisive: 'the effects due to the Lords of Vyaya and Randhr Bhava will depend on their association.' The 12th lord is not classed as good or bad by itself. It takes its colour from the other house it rules and the planets it joins.

Read the last column with Ch. 34 in hand. That chapter says the lord of a Kona (5th or 9th) gives auspicious results, the Lagna lord is specially auspicious, and any planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects. So for Aries, Gemini, Libra and Sagittarius Lagnas the 12th lord also rules a trine; for Aquarius it is the Lagna lord itself; for Cancer, Capricorn and Pisces it also rules a house Parashara counts against it. For Leo and Virgo the lord is a luminary with no second house, so it depends entirely on the company it keeps.

How BPHS judges the 12th house (Ch. 23)

Chapter 23, Effects of Vyaya Bhava, has fourteen slokas. Its subject is not whether you spend but what you spend on, and whether you stay or wander. The test is the same each time: the condition of the 12th lord and the nature of the planets in or aspecting the house.

  • Sl. 1-4, good spending: expenses will be 'on good accounts' if the 12th lord is with a benefic, in its own house or exalted, or if a benefic occupies the 12th. When the Moon is the 12th lord and is exalted, in its own sign or Navamsa, or in the 11th, 9th or 5th, the text promises beautiful houses and beds, scented articles, rich clothes and learning.
  • Sl. 5-6, troubled spending: if the 12th lord is in the 6th or 8th, or in an enemy's or debilitation Navamsa, the native is 'troubled by expenses' and short of general and marital happiness. If it is in an angle or trine, the text says a spouse is obtained.
  • Sl. 7, a method note: just as these results are read from the Lagna for the native, the same deductions are made for siblings from the 3rd and so on for other relatives.
  • Sl. 8, visible and invisible: planets in the visible half of the zodiac give explicit results, and those in the invisible half give secret results.
  • Sl. 9-10, the afterlife pair: Rahu in the 12th with Mars, Saturn and the Sun, or the 12th lord with the Sun, is given a bad end; a benefic in the 12th with its lord exalted or joined or aspected by a benefic is given 'final emancipation'.
  • Sl. 11-12, travel: one will 'wander from country to country' if the 12th lord and the 12th house are with malefics and the lord exchanges aspects with malefics. With benefics in the same positions, one 'will move in his own country'.
  • Sl. 13: earnings will come through wrongful means if Saturn or Mars and the like occupy the 12th without a benefic's aspect.
  • Sl. 14: if the Lagna lord is in the 12th while the 12th lord is in the Lagna with Venus, expenses will be on religious grounds.

Three things in this chapter are worth holding on to. First, the classical basis for 'the 12th house means going abroad' is Sl. 11, and it is a malefic combination, paired with a benefic one that keeps a person at home. The text treats distance as displacement, not as opportunity. Second, Sl. 10 is the sloka behind the moksha reputation, and it requires three things together: a benefic in the house, a strong lord, and benefic association. Third, Sl. 1-4 says outright that a 12th lord in its own house gives spending on good accounts, which matters when we reach Ch. 24.

The Navamsa is named repeatedly in the first six slokas, so the chapter cannot be applied from the birth chart alone. The Navamsa (D9) calculator shows the 12th lord's Navamsa sign, and the Navamsa guide explains why that chart needs a birth time accurate to the minute.

The 12th lord in each of the twelve houses

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 133-144 gives one sloka for the 12th lord in each house. They are paraphrased below. Clauses about other people's spouses, character slurs and named ailments are left out; the rest is as the text has it.

12th lord inBPHS Ch. 24What the sloka says
1stSl. 133A spendthrift, weak in constitution, short of wealth and learning
2ndSl. 134Spends on inauspicious deeds, yet religious, sweet in speech, with virtues and happiness
3rdSl. 135Little happiness from siblings; looks after himself first
4thSl. 136Little maternal happiness; steady losses in land, vehicles and houses
5thSl. 137Lacking children and learning; spends and visits shrines hoping for a child
6thSl. 138Enmity with his own people, given to anger, miserable
7thSl. 139Expenditure on account of the spouse; little conjugal happiness, learning or strength
8thSl. 140Will always gain, speak affably, live a medium span and have all good qualities
9thSl. 141Dishonours elders, hostile even to friends, intent on his own ends
10thSl. 142Expenditure through royal persons; only moderate happiness from the father
11thSl. 143Incurs losses, is brought up by others, sometimes gains through others
12thSl. 144Faces only heavy expenditure, lacks physical ease, irritable
Paraphrased from the corpus translation of BPHS Ch. 24.

The pattern is consistent: wherever the 12th lord goes, that house's subject is spent or thinned. The one clear exception is the 8th (Sl. 140), where a Dusthana lord in another Dusthana produces gain, the idea later named Vipareeta Raja Yoga. But the same chapter does not extend that logic to the other two cases. The 12th lord in the 6th (Sl. 138) and in the 12th itself (Sl. 144) are both read as hardship. And Sl. 144 sits awkwardly beside Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4, which counts the 12th lord in its own house as a sign of spending on good accounts. The two passages are measuring different things, the quantity of expense in one and its quality in the other, and this page does not merge them.

Every other house lord placed in the 12th

The reverse reading is in the same chapter: what each house lord does when it lands in the 12th. The idea is the same in each row. The matters of the house whose lord has moved here are spent.

Lord ofBPHS Ch. 24Placed in the 12th
1stSl. 12If without benefic aspect or company: little physical happiness, unfruitful spending, much anger
2ndSl. 24Adventurous, without wealth, interested in others' wealth
3rdSl. 36Spends on evil deeds; fortunate through a woman
4thSl. 48Without domestic and other comforts; indolent
5thSl. 60Little happiness from his own children; an adopted child
6thSl. 72Always spends on vices; hostile to the learned
7thSl. 84Penury and miserliness; livelihood related to clothes; a spendthrift spouse
8thSl. 96Spends on evil deeds; a short life, more so with a malefic there
9thSl. 108Loss of fortune; always spends on auspicious acts and becomes poor by entertaining guests
10thSl. 120Spends through royal abodes, fears enemies, worried in spite of being skilful
11thSl. 132Always depends on good deeds; sensuous; befriends foreigners
Paraphrased; household and character clauses trimmed.

Two rows deserve a second look. The Lagna lord's sloka carries its own escape clause: the bad result applies when the planet is 'devoid of benefic Drishti and/or Yuti'. And the 9th lord here spends itself on auspicious acts and hospitality, which is loss of money but hardly loss of character. The 11th lord row is similar. The 12th does not make every planet behave badly; it makes each one give something away.

Planets in the 12th house

For planets placed in the house, the fullest source in this corpus is the Bhrigu Sutras, whose commentator also digests four other classics under 'Other Views'. Almost every planet gets a bleak first line and then a condition that reverses it. The afterlife phrases that close several of these sutras are left out below.

  • Sun (Sutras 103-110): wasteful spending, loss of wealth and life away from the native land. With a strong, auspicious planet the native 'will enjoy blessings of God' and bed comforts. The commentator adds that the Sun in Leo in the 12th is good and gives a Vipareeta Raja Yoga.
  • Moon (Sutras 70-71): wasteful expenditure and an angry nature; with a benefic, learned, kind-hearted and with good friends. The commentator says most ill effects are warded off in Cancer, and notes that Chamatkar Chintamani has the money spent on good causes.
  • Mars (Sutras 90-91): want of finance. The commentator records that all his authorities agree Mars gives only bad results here, with some relief in its own sign.
  • Mercury (Sutras 76-81): learned and fond of distributing things to others; with malefics an unstable mind; with benefics, spending on religious charities.
  • Jupiter (Sutras 54-58): poor, studious, proficient in mathematics, spending on religious causes; better in its own sign or exaltation. The commentator's view is that Jupiter loses its good significations here and harms the good houses it owns.
  • Venus (Sutras 65-68): 'extreme poverty', but with a benefic very wealthy and with all comforts of bed.
  • Saturn (Sutras 49-53): with a malefic, defective eyesight, wasteful expenditure and poverty; with a benefic, happy and with good eyesight. The commentator adds that Saturn in the 12th as lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th is very beneficial.
  • Rahu and Ketu (Sutras 31-32, one shared line): few children and eye troubles. Among the other views quoted, Chamatkar Chintamani has Ketu here making the native 'like a king' who spends on charities.

Venus is the open disagreement. The sutra says extreme poverty. The commentator then reports that Brihat Jataka, Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani all make the native rich, that only Saravali dissents, and that he sides with the majority, citing a Bhavartha Ratnakara verse that Venus gives the same wealth in the 6th as in the 12th. So on Venus in the 12th the classical authorities are split, and the split is on record. It fits the house: Venus signifies comforts, and bed comforts are one of the oldest meanings of Vyaya Bhava.

The eye appears repeatedly: the commentary's list gives the house the left eye, and the Moon, Mars, Saturn and node entries all mention eye troubles. That is a classical body association reported as the texts give it. It is not a diagnosis and this app does not treat it as one.

BPHS adds one isolated statement. In Ch. 10, a chapter of antidotes to early-life dangers, Sl. 6 says the Sun in Vyaya confers a hundred-year span on a Libra Lagna native. It is the only place in the text where a planet in the 12th is credited with long life, and it is recorded here for completeness; this app does not compute lifespans.

Named combinations that involve the 12th house

Vimala Yoga and the Vipareeta rule

Vimala Yoga is the name for the 12th lord placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th. It is one of three Vipareeta Raja Yogas, with Harsha for the 6th lord and Sarala for the 8th. This app's yoga calculator detects it by exactly that rule and reads it as difficulty converted 'into an unexpected source of gain, often most visible after periods of real struggle rather than as easy, steady fortune'.

The sourcing deserves care. The Bhrigu Sutras commentator quotes Uttara Kalamrita for the rule, and in that quotation the 12th lord qualifies when it is in the 8th or the 6th, or when the three Trika lords are connected with each other and free of other planets. The 12th lord in the 12th is the commentator's own extension, offered 'on the analogy' of the rule. BPHS, as shown above, agrees for the 8th (Ch. 24 Sl. 140) and disagrees for the 6th and the 12th. So when this app lists Vimala Yoga for a 12th lord in its own house, it is following the wider modern rule, and a yoga being present is a starting point for reading, not a result.

Raj Yogas from a weak 12th lord

BPHS has its own version in Ch. 39. Sl. 20 forms a Raj Yog if the 6th, 8th and 12th lords are fallen, in inimical signs or combust, while the Lagna lord, in its own or exaltation sign, aspects the Lagna. Sl. 28 says that even one of those three lords, debilitated and aspecting the Lagna, gives a Raj Yog. Notice the direction: Parashara rewards the weakness of the 12th lord together with a strong Lagna, not the 12th lord's placement in a Trika house. This app does not detect these two slokas.

Combinations for penury

Ch. 42 lists the opposite set, and the 12th is in seven of its first fifteen slokas. The Lagna lord in the 12th with the 12th lord in the Lagna, joined or aspected by a Marak lord (Sl. 2). The Lagna lord with a malefic in the 6th, 8th or 12th while the 2nd lord is debilitated or in an enemy's sign (Sl. 5). The Lagna lord joined with a Trika lord and without a benefic's aspect (Sl. 6). The 5th and 9th lords in the 6th and 12th respectively under Marak aspect (Sl. 7). The dispositors of the three Trika lords themselves in such houses under malefic influence (Sl. 9). Sl. 13 turns it into a timing rule: a planet associated with a Trika lord and without the aspect of a trine lord harms finances in its own dasha. And Sl. 15 says a person is a spendthrift if the 12th house receives the aspect of the Lagna lord.

Subh Yog, Mangal Dosha and the Jaimini points

  • Subh and Asubh Yog (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2): benefics in both the 12th and the 2nd form Subh Yog, read as eloquent, charming and virtuous. Malefics in both form Asubh Yog. The houses on either side of the Lagna are judged as a pair.
  • Mangal Dosha: this app flags Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the Lagna, and grades the 12th-house case 'Mild' (only the 7th and 8th are 'Moderate'). See the Mangal Dosha calculator and what the dosha is and is not.
  • Vyaya Pad and Upa Pad: BPHS Ch. 29 names the Arudha of the 12th house the Vyaya Pad, and Ch. 30 builds the Upa Pad on 'the Bhava following the natal Lagn'. The translator's note records more than two views on that phrase; this app follows the one it sets out, the 12th house for an odd rising sign and the 2nd for an even one. Both appear in the Bhava Padas calculator.
  • The 12th from the Karakamsa: a different twelfth, counted from the Atmakaraka's Navamsa sign, which BPHS Ch. 33 Sl. 63-74 reads for worship. It has its own calculator and article.
  • Argala: BPHS Ch. 31 assigns each house a subject for planetary intervention, and for Vyaya Bhava it is simply expenses. The Argala calculator lists what intervenes on your 12th.

How this app computes and reads your 12th house

The Kundali pages apply a small number of explicit rules to the 12th house, and each can be checked against the text above.

  • The house card. Each house gets one sentence built from its lord: which planet rules it, the sign and house that planet sits in, and its dignity. The tone word is decided by the lord's dignity score alone: favourable at +1 or more, testing at -1 or less, neutral between. So the 12th-house card describes the condition of your 12th lord, in line with Ch. 34's statement that the lord's results depend on its situation.
  • Planets in the 12th. The planet-in-house card marks a placement favourable only if the planet has strong dignity and is not in a Dusthana. A planet in the 12th therefore always receives the cautious line for its placement, for example 'financial strain and health matters needing real care' for Mars or 'real financial strain otherwise' for Venus. The supportive lines in the same table, such as Ketu's 'genuine spiritual liberation' or Mercury's 'genuine generosity and a charitable disposition', record the conditions the Bhrigu Sutras attach, but the present rule does not select them for a Dusthana.
  • Dasha quality. A dasha lord sitting in the 6th, 8th or 12th is rated 'challenging' regardless of sign, following BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6.
  • Vimala Yoga and Mangal Dosha, by the rules given in the previous section.
  • The daily guidance. When the transiting Moon is in your 6th, 8th or 12th house, the daily card suggests holding major commitments, on the stated ground that decisions made under pressure in a dusthana transit tend to need revisiting.

What the app does not do is equally specific. It does not apply Ch. 23's afterlife slokas, does not compute the Ch. 39 and Ch. 42 combinations named above, and does not predict foreign settlement from the 12th. The planetary positions come from the app's own astronomical routines, described on the methodology page.

Timing: when the 12th house becomes active

The dasha of the 12th lord

BPHS Ch. 48 runs through the dashas of the twelve house lords in order, and for the last it gives 'distress and danger from diseases in the Dasha of the Lord of Vyaya' (Sl. 2-8). This app's wording for the same period is 'expenses, distress or health matters needing attention'. You can find when your 12th lord's period falls with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator; what a Mahadasha is explains the system.

The same chapter immediately qualifies it. Sl. 14-17 1/2: the dasha of the 6th, 8th or 12th lord 'also becomes favourable, if they get associated with the Lord of a Trikon', and the dasha of any planet aspected by a Kendra or Trikona lord is favourable. This is Ch. 34's principle applied to time. For four Lagnas the 12th lord is itself a trine lord, so the bare headline was never meant to be read alone.

The dasha of a planet placed in the 12th

Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 gives the general gate for every dasha: results are favourable if the dasha lord is in the Lagna or in its exaltation, own or a friendly sign, and unfavourable if it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated or in an enemy's sign. Ch. 48 adds a detail few readers know: a planet placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th 'at the commencement of the Dasha' yields adverse results, so the position at birth and the position when the period begins are both to be considered. This app applies the natal test only. Sub-periods are covered in Antardasha and Pratyantardasha.

Transits through the twelfth sign

Transit rules in this app are counted from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, so the 'twelfth' here is the sign before your Moon sign. Two rules use it. Sade Sati begins when Saturn enters that sign; the engine labels it the rising phase, the first of three, and describes the whole period as one 'traditionally read as a time to consolidate rather than expand, not as an omen'. The Sade Sati calculator dates it. And in the general transit rule the engine follows, any planet in the 1st, 4th, 8th or 12th sign from the Moon is read as adverse for that period; the Gochar calculator and the Timing feature show the current positions.

Common misreadings

  • "The 12th house means I will settle abroad." Parashara's definition does not mention foreign lands. Ch. 23 Sl. 11 gives wandering between countries as the result of malefic influence on both the house and its lord. Foreign residence as a neutral signification comes from later lists.
  • "A planet in the 12th is wasted." Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 says a benefic in the 12th produces spending on good accounts, and the Bhrigu Sutras attach a reversing condition to nearly every planet. Three of four authorities quoted there make Venus in the 12th rich.
  • "The 12th lord is a malefic." Ch. 34 refuses to classify it: its effects depend on its association. Check the other house it owns before judging it.
  • "The 12th house gives moksha." One sloka (Ch. 23 Sl. 10) gives emancipation, and only for a benefic in the house with a strong, well-associated lord. It is a conditional result, and not one this app claims to detect.
  • "Vimala Yoga guarantees success." BPHS reads the 12th lord in the 12th as heavy expenditure (Ch. 24 Sl. 144) and in the 6th as enmity (Sl. 138). Only the 8th-house case has Parashara's support.
  • "Saturn in my 12th house means Sade Sati." Sade Sati is counted from the Moon's sign by transit. A natal planet in the 12th from the Lagna is a different thing.
  • "The 12th from the Moon is the 12th house." Yogas such as Anapha (a planet in the twelfth sign from the Moon) and Vasi (from the Sun) count from the luminaries. They say nothing about Vyaya Bhava.

Check it in your own chart

  1. Generate your chart in the birth chart calculator with an accurate birth time. If you do not have one, read what to do when the birth time is unknown first, because every house on this page depends on it.
  2. Find the sign in your 12th house and its lord, using the table above. Note the lord's other house: a trine or the Lagna supports it, the 3rd or 11th counts against it, and the Sun or Moon has no second house (Ch. 34).
  3. See which house the 12th lord occupies and read the matching sloka from Ch. 24 Sl. 133-144. Then check its company and aspects, since Ch. 23 turns on whether benefics or malefics are involved.
  4. Check the lord's dignity and its Navamsa sign. Ch. 23 Sl. 5-6 counts an enemy's or debilitation Navamsa against it. The Shad Bala figure gives a second measure.
  5. List any planets in the 12th and read each with its stated exception: own sign, exaltation, or a benefic companion.
  6. Open the yoga calculator and see whether Vimala Yoga or Mangal Dosha is listed, and why.
  7. Look at timing: is the 12th lord, or a planet in the 12th, running its period, and is Saturn in the sign before your Moon? If you want the pieces weighed together, the AI Life Chat reads them from your computed chart.

Questions people ask

What does the 12th house represent in Vedic astrology?
In BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 13 it indicates expenses, the history of enemies and one's own death. Ch. 23 adds the quality of spending, bed comforts, travel and emancipation as results of specific combinations. Later lists add loss, confinement, charity, foreign residence and the feet and left eye. This app titles the house 'Loss & spirituality'.
Why is it called Vyaya Bhava?
Vyaya means expenditure. BPHS uses the name in its list of the twelve bhavas (Ch. 7 Sl. 37-38), and Saravali gives the house no other name. Most of Parashara's chapter on it is about what a person spends on.
Is the 12th house bad?
It is one of the three Dusthanas, and BPHS says association with them 'will inflict evils'. But the same text gives good spending, comforts and learning when the 12th lord is strong or a benefic is in the house (Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4), and says the lord's results depend on its association (Ch. 34).
Does the 12th house show foreign travel or settlement?
BPHS mentions travel in two slokas only: malefic influence on the house and its lord gives wandering from country to country, and benefic influence keeps movement within one's own country (Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12). 'Life in a foreign place' is in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary's list. This app does not predict relocation from the 12th.
What is Vimala Yoga?
The Vipareeta Raja Yoga formed when the 12th lord sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. This app detects it by that rule. The Uttara Kalamrita rule quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names the 6th and 8th; the 12th-in-12th case is an extension, and BPHS reads it as heavy expenditure.
What happens in the Mahadasha of the 12th lord?
BPHS Ch. 48 gives 'distress and danger from diseases' as the headline, then says the period becomes favourable if the 12th lord is associated with a trine lord. This app words the theme as expenses, distress or health matters needing attention, and judges the period mainly by the lord's dignity and house.
Is the 12th house the house of moksha?
Advanced Predictive Astrology calls it the moksha sthana, and BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 10 gives final emancipation for a benefic in the 12th with an exalted or well-associated lord. Parashara's own definition of the house does not include it. It is a conditional classical statement, not something a chart calculation can confirm.
Can I read my 12th house without a birth time?
No. The 12th house is the sign before the Ascendant, and the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours. Without a birth time you can still read the twelfth sign from your Moon for transits such as Sade Sati, but not the house, its lord or the planets in it.
