The 3rd house is called Sahaja Bhava, the house of the co-born. In the classical texts it carries two subjects that modern readers rarely put together: your younger brothers and sisters, and your own courage. This page sets out what the texts say about it, chapter by chapter, and how this app computes it. The main source is Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), which gives the house its own chapter, with Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras alongside. To follow along with your own chart, open the birth chart calculator and find the third sign counted from your Ascendant.
The 3rd is an unusual house because the texts speak about it in two voices. As a place, it is one of the growing houses, where hard planets are said to do well. As a lordship, it is on the short list of houses whose rulers are called troublesome. Most confusion about the 3rd house comes from mixing those two statements. They are kept apart here, with the sloka for each.
How to read this page
Classical verses are written as flat statements about family members, lifespans and character. They are quoted here as what a text says, not as a forecast for you. Several verses concern the survival of siblings. They come from an era with very different mortality, every one of them is conditional on strength in the text itself, and this app does not compute them. Any body or health association is a classical association only and is not medical advice.
What Sahaja Bhava signifies
BPHS lists the subjects of each house in Ch. 11. Sloka 4 gives the 3rd: valour, servants or attendants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction (the word in the text is Upadesh), journeys, and the death of a parent. That is the complete list in the primary source. It is short, and every later chapter that mentions the 3rd draws on it.
Ch. 32 narrows the family meaning. In its summary of house significance (Sl. 31-34) it says the 3rd stands for younger brothers and sisters specifically. The same passage gives the fixed significator of each house in order, and the third name in that list is Mangal, which is Mars. So when Ch. 14 says "the indicator" or "the significator" without naming a planet, it means Mars. Reading the 3rd house always involves three things: the house, its lord, and Mars.
The Bhrigu Sutras edition in this app's source library gives a longer, more modern list in its section on house significations. It adds mental inclination, memory, firmness, cousins and neighbours, short travels, communications, correspondence and writing, change of residence, the signing of contracts, rumours, and the hands, throat, shoulders, arms and nervous system. Items such as railways and telegraphs show that this list is the commentator's own extension. It is useful, but it is not Parashara. Where the two differ in scope, this page treats the Ch. 11 list as the core and the longer list as later practice.
| Source | What it assigns to the 3rd house |
|---|---|
| BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4 | Valour, servants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction, journeys, a parent’s death |
| BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 | Younger brothers and sisters; fixed significator Mars |
| BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 | Happiness through co-born is read from the Drekkana (D3) division |
| BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 | With the 8th, one of the two houses of longevity |
| Bhrigu Sutras, house significations | Courage, memory, younger siblings, neighbours, short travel, writing, contracts, hands and arms |
How the texts classify the 3rd house
BPHS sorts the twelve houses into overlapping groups, and the 3rd belongs to three of them. Knowing which group a statement comes from tells you how to weigh it.
- Upachaya. Ch. 7 and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 both say the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th are the Upachaya houses. The 3rd shares this group with the 6th house, the 10th house and the 11th house. The commentary in the Bhrigu Sutras calls it an accepted principle that natural malefics placed in these houses give beneficial results.
- Apoklima. The same passages list the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th as Apoklimas, the cadent houses. These follow the angles and the succedent houses in the order of prominence.
- A lordship that brings difficulty. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says that any planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th will give evil effects, and that within each group the significance rises in ascending order. On that reading the 3rd lord is the mildest of the three. Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 names the 3rd lord among the "evil" lords whose company harms another house.
- A house of longevity. Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 calls the 3rd and the 8th house the two houses of longevity, which is why the 12th from each, the 2nd and the 7th, are the Maraka houses.
The first and third items are the two voices mentioned above. A natural malefic sitting in the 3rd is treated kindly by the tradition. A planet that rules the 3rd is treated with suspicion wherever it sits. Both statements are in the texts and they describe different things. The first is about occupation, the second about ownership.
What this app leaves out
Ch. 44 Sl. 25-34 goes on to read the manner and place of death from the planets in the 3rd house. This app does not compute or display any death or lifespan prediction, and that material is not reproduced here.
BPHS Chapter 14: the judgement of Sahaja Bhava
Ch. 14 is fifteen slokas long. It is almost entirely about siblings, with courage attached to the opening verse. Its logic is easier to follow in groups than verse by verse.
The opening rules (Sl. 1-3)
Sloka 1 states the base rule: if the 3rd house is joined or aspected by a benefic, the person will be endowed with co-born and be courageous. Sloka 2 adds the lord and the significator: if the 3rd lord together with Mars aspects the 3rd house, or if these two sit in the 3rd itself, good results follow from the house. Sloka 3 gives the reverse: when those two are with a malefic, or in a sign owned by a malefic, the text speaks of harm to the co-born.
Notice what Sl. 2 does. Mars is a natural malefic, yet Mars in or aspecting the 3rd alongside its lord is given as a good condition. This is the chapter's own version of the Upachaya idea, stated for the one planet that signifies the house.
Brothers or sisters (Sl. 4)
Sloka 4 reads the sex of younger siblings from the gender classification of planets and signs. A female planet as 3rd lord, or female planets in the 3rd, indicates sisters born after the person. Male planets and male signs indicate younger brothers. A mixed picture indicates both. The verse ends with a condition that applies to everything before it: these effects are to be declared after assessing the strength and weakness of the planets concerned.
Where the lord and Mars sit (Sl. 5-6)
If the 3rd lord and Mars are together in the 8th house, the text gives harm to co-born. Happiness in sibling matters comes when Mars or the 3rd lord is in an angle, in a trine, in exaltation, or in friendly divisions. This is the most usable rule in the chapter because it can be checked directly: find the 3rd lord, find Mars, and see whether either is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 5th or 9th, or exalted.
The counting verses (Sl. 7-13)
Slokas 7 to 13 are worked combinations that give numbers of siblings. One has Mercury in the 3rd while the 3rd lord joins the Moon and Mars joins Saturn. Another has Mars with Rahu while the 3rd lord is debilitated. A third has the 3rd lord in an angle with Mars exalted in a trine and joined by Jupiter, for which the text gives twelve co-born. Sl. 12-13 give one co-born for a combination involving the 12th lord, Mars and Jupiter with the Moon in the 3rd, and the translation notes that some manuscripts read the 11th lord instead. The last line says that a lone Moon in the 3rd aspected by male planets gives younger brothers, while the aspect of Venus gives younger sisters.
These verses belong to a world of large families. A figure of twelve siblings cannot be carried over to a present-day household, and the translation's own note about variant readings shows the numbers were not stable even between manuscripts. This app does not turn them into a sibling count.
The three hard planets (Sl. 14-15)
Sloka 14 is the verse most often quoted without its neighbour. It says the Sun in the 3rd harms elder siblings, Saturn in the 3rd harms younger ones, and Mars there harms both. Sloka 15 follows at once: the effects related to brothers and sisters are to be announced only after estimating the strength and weakness of such combinations. The chapter ends on that instruction.
Put Sl. 14 beside Sl. 2 and the chapter's position is clear. Mars in the 3rd with the 3rd lord is a good condition. Mars in the 3rd is also listed as hard on siblings. The house's two subjects, courage and co-born, do not always move together, and the text says so within a single chapter.
Which planet rules your 3rd house
This app counts houses by whole signs from the Ascendant, so the 3rd house is simply the third sign from your rising sign and its lord is that sign's ruler. The table below is arithmetic from the sign lordships, not a quotation. It also shows the other house the same planet rules, because Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 says a planet owning two houses gives results from both lordships. If you do not know your rising sign, the Lagna calculator finds it from your birth time and place.
| Ascendant | 3rd house sign | 3rd lord | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Gemini | Mercury | 6th |
| Taurus | Cancer | Moon | None |
| Gemini | Leo | Sun | None |
| Cancer | Virgo | Mercury | 12th |
| Leo | Libra | Venus | 10th |
| Virgo | Scorpio | Mars | 8th |
| Libra | Sagittarius | Jupiter | 6th |
| Scorpio | Capricorn | Saturn | 4th |
| Sagittarius | Aquarius | Saturn | 2nd |
| Capricorn | Pisces | Jupiter | 12th |
| Aquarius | Aries | Mars | 10th |
| Pisces | Taurus | Venus | 8th |
Two rows deserve a comment from the text. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says that when the 8th lord also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, it becomes specifically harmful. In this table that describes Mars for a Virgo Ascendant and Venus for a Pisces Ascendant. The same passage says a planet owning a more prominent house will stall the effects of its lesser house and give its own. For Leo and Aquarius the 3rd lord also rules the 10th, an angle. For Scorpio it also rules the 4th. In those charts the 3rd lordship is the junior of the two.
The 3rd lord in each of the twelve houses
BPHS Ch. 24 gives one sloka for each placement of each house lord. Slokas 25 to 36 cover the 3rd lord. They are summarised below in plain words. The original uses the idiom of its time about spouses and morals, and this table keeps the substance while dropping judgements on other people.
| 3rd lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 reading | Sloka |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self-made wealth, a devotional bent, valour, intelligence without formal learning | 25 |
| 2nd | Low drive and little effort, lacking valour, not content, an eye on what belongs to others | 26 |
| 3rd | Happiness through co-born, wealth and children, a cheerful and very happy nature | 27 |
| 4th | Happy, wealthy and intelligent, with a difficult marriage partner noted | 28 |
| 5th | Children and virtue; if the lord is joined or aspected by a malefic, a formidable spouse | 29 |
| 6th | Enmity with co-born, affluence, strained relations with the maternal uncle | 30 |
| 7th | Service to those in authority; unhappy in early life, happy at its end | 31 |
| 8th | A livelihood dependent on serving others; the text adds dishonesty and a harsh end | 32 |
| 9th | Lack of happiness from the father, fortune through the spouse, enjoyment of children | 33 |
| 10th | All kinds of happiness and self-made wealth | 34 |
| 11th | Steady gains in trade, intelligence without schooling, an adventurous streak, work for others | 35 |
| 12th | Spending on poor causes, a difficult father, good fortune through a woman | 36 |
Some patterns stand out. The 3rd lord in its own house (Sl. 27) is the cleanest reading for siblings. The 1st, 10th and 11th all carry the phrase or sense of self-made wealth, which fits a house of personal effort. The 6th placement gives the sibling friction that Ch. 14 warns of, and the 8th matches Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6, where the 3rd lord with Mars in the 8th is the difficult case. The 2nd placement is the one that removes valour, with the lord sitting in the 12th from its own house.
Ch. 24 closes with the rule that governs the whole table (Sl. 145-148): the effects are to be deduced considering strength and weakness, and a planet gives full, half or a quarter of its effects according to whether its strength is full, medium or negligible. The Shad Bala calculator is the place to look up how strong your 3rd lord is before taking any row at face value.
Other house lords placed in the 3rd
The same chapter can be read the other way: what happens when the lord of another house sits in the 3rd. These are twelve single slokas scattered through Ch. 24.
| Lord placed in the 3rd | BPHS Ch. 24 reading | Sloka |
|---|---|---|
| 1st lord | Valour "equal to a lion", wealth, honour, intelligence and happiness | 3 |
| 2nd lord | Valorous, wise and virtuous but miserly when related to a benefic; unorthodox when related to a malefic | 15 |
| 3rd lord | Happiness through co-born, wealth, children, cheerfulness | 27 |
| 4th lord | Valour, servants, generosity, self-earned wealth, freedom from disease | 39 |
| 5th lord | Attached to co-born, given to carrying tales, miserly, absorbed in own work | 51 |
| 6th lord | Quick to anger, lacking courage, at odds with co-born, disobedient helpers | 63 |
| 7th lord | Difficulty in the matter of children | 75 |
| 8th lord | Without happiness from siblings, indolent, lacking helpers and strength | 87 |
| 9th lord | Happiness from siblings, wealth, virtue and charm | 99 |
| 10th lord | Happiness from brothers and servants; valorous, virtuous, eloquent and truthful | 111 |
| 11th lord | Skilful in every kind of work, wealthy, happy with siblings | 123 |
| 12th lord | Without happiness from siblings, hostile to others, self-serving | 135 |
The split follows the house classes almost exactly. The lords of the 1st, 4th, 9th and 10th, which are angles and a trine, bring valour and good sibling relations into the 3rd. The lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th, the three houses Ch. 32 calls Trikas or Dusthanas, take away courage, helpers or sibling happiness. Five of the twelve slokas mention valour or its absence, and eight mention siblings. The Ch. 11 list holds up.
Planets in the 3rd house
Saravali Ch. 30 gives one verse for each of the seven planets in each house. The Bhrigu Sutras give a set of sutras per planet per house, usually with conditions attached. They do not always agree, and the differences are worth seeing side by side. Each planet also has its own page in this series.
| Planet | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Valorous, strong, dear to people, learned, overcomes opponents; loss of co-born (Sl. 4) | A brave fighter with a good name who enjoys wealth; few or no siblings; with a benefic, siblings prosper (Sutras 33-42) |
| Moon | Protects co-born, always delighted, valorous, endowed with learning (Sl. 16) | A fair number of brothers and sisters and intelligence, but weak finances (Sutras 15-18) |
| Mars | Courageous, unconquerable, virtuous and famous; bereft of co-born (Sl. 28) | Financial gains but friction with siblings, unless aspected by a benefic; in own sign or exalted, siblings are long-lived and the person patient and brave (Sutras 16-25) |
| Mercury | Toils hard, skilful, endowed with co-born, cunning and fickle (Sl. 40) | A good number of brothers, happiness, wealth, good qualities (Sutras 25-31) |
| Jupiter | Ever successful, yet humiliated and weak in digestion (Sl. 52) | See the Jupiter page for the sutras |
| Venus | Happy and rich but with little enthusiasm (Sl. 64) | Miserly, tolerant, success through determined effort, a good number of siblings (Sutras 20-22) |
| Saturn | Courageous, charitable, of great intelligence, with idle attendants (Sl. 76) | Loss of or no younger siblings; in own sign or exalted, a good number of them (Sutras 10-13) |
Three things can be read from this table. First, the natural malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn) all receive courage in Saravali, and two of the three lose siblings in the same breath. That is the Upachaya principle and Ch. 14 Sl. 14 appearing together in one verse. The Bhrigu Sutras commentator says it outright under Saturn: as a malefic in an Upachaya house, Saturn makes the person courageous and wealthy.
Second, the two natural benefics that usually help a house are lukewarm here. Saravali gives Jupiter in the 3rd a mixed verse and gives Venus little enthusiasm. The sources do not explain why, so this page does not either. Third, the Bhrigu Sutras keep returning to one condition across different planets: under Mercury, Venus and the Sun alike, the text says that if the lord of the 3rd is strong, the siblings are long-lived, and if it is weak or in the 6th, 8th or 12th, sibling matters suffer. The occupant is never the whole answer.
For Rahu and Ketu the Bhrigu Sutras have only two brief sutras (7-8), then quote other authorities. Phaladeepika is cited as giving Rahu in the 3rd respect, wealth and determination along with poor relations with brothers, and Chamatkar Chintamani as making the person very courageous. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 adds that Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in the 3rd, 6th and 11th.
- Sun in the 3rd house and Moon in the 3rd house
- Mars in the 3rd house and Mercury in the 3rd house
- Jupiter in the 3rd house and Venus in the 3rd house
- Saturn in the 3rd house, Rahu in the 3rd house and Ketu in the 3rd house
How this app words a planet in your 3rd house
The Kundali reading gives each planet a favourable or a testing line for the house it occupies. The lines for the 3rd house were written from the Bhrigu Sutras chapters above. The engine chooses between them with one test: a planet counts as favourable when its dignity is exalted, moolatrikona, own sign or friendly sign, and it is not in a dusthana. For the Sun, Saturn and Rahu the favourable line says in so many words that a natural malefic does well in this Upachaya house; for Mars it reads "courage, valour and long-lived, supportive siblings when well-placed". The testing lines speak of strain, distance or rivalry with siblings. The code deliberately softens the source's harder language about siblings into strain or distance, and it makes no claim about anyone's survival.
Saravali Chapter 34: three more rules
Saravali returns to the 3rd in its chapter on houses and worldly affairs (Ch. 34 Sl. 21-24). The first rule is symmetrical. When the 3rd is a malefic's sign and holds a malefic, co-born suffer. When it is a benefic's sign and holds benefics, there is happiness from them. BPHS Ch. 14 judges mainly through the lord and Mars, so here the two texts place the emphasis differently: Saravali looks at the sign and its occupants first.
The second is a counting method that BPHS does not give: the number of Navamsas already elapsed in the 3rd house indicates the number of younger brothers, and aspects from other planets on the 3rd raise that number. The third is a set of pairings. Saturn in the 3rd aspected by Mars harms co-born. Venus in the 3rd aspected by Jupiter increases happiness from them. Mercury in the 3rd aspected by Mars harms friendships, and the translation notes that some manuscripts read the Sun in place of Mars. As with Ch. 14, this app does not compute a sibling count from any of these.
The 3rd house beyond the birth chart
BPHS gives the 3rd house several companions in its more technical chapters. Each has a calculator in this app.
- Drekkana (D3). Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 says happiness through co-born is to be read from the Drekkana division. The Drekkana calculator builds it the way Ch. 6 describes: each sign is cut into thirds, and the three parts fall in the 1st, 5th and 9th signs from that sign.
- Vikram Pada (A3). Ch. 29 names the Arudha of each house and calls that of the 3rd Vikram, also Bhratru. The Bhava Padas calculator lists it with the other eleven. The Pada is a separate point from the house itself, and the engine keeps the two names apart for that reason.
- Bhratru Karaka. Ch. 32 Sl. 13-17 ranks the planets by degree to produce the changing significators. The third in that order is the Bhratru Karaka, labelled "Siblings & courage" in the Char Karakas calculator. It differs from chart to chart, unlike Mars, the fixed significator.
- Argala. Ch. 31 says that a planet causing unobstructed Argala and aspecting the 3rd house denotes happiness from co-born. The Argala calculator shows which houses receive that support in your chart.
The 3rd also appears in two of the Raja Yoga verses of Ch. 39. Sloka 17 says that benefics in the 1st, 2nd and 4th with a malefic in the 3rd make a person a king or equal to one. Sloka 19 gives a Raja Yoga when debilitated planets occupy the 3rd, 6th and 8th while a strong Lagna lord aspects the Lagna. Both use the 3rd as a place where a hard or weak planet does no damage. Ch. 43 Sl. 65-66 makes a related point for general vitality, praising malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th with benefics in the angles. The yogas calculator reports the yogas this app detects; it does not test for every verse in Ch. 39, because that chapter contains many competing rules.
Timing: when the 3rd house becomes active
Dasha of the 3rd lord
BPHS Ch. 48 says the area of life touched by a Mahadasha depends on the houses its lord rules. Slokas 2-4 run through the twelve lords and give "unfavourable effects" for the Dasha of the 3rd lord. Slokas 18-20 widen it: the Dashas of the lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th, of planets placed in those houses, and of planets joined with them "will prove unfavourable", with the stated exception that Rahu and Ketu do well there. If Mahadashas are new to you, start with what a Mahadasha is.
This app applies that chapter directly. When your running Mahadasha lord rules your 3rd house, the Kundali reading attaches the theme "effort-heavy, generally more testing period for courage and sibling matters". The wording is the engine's paraphrase of Ch. 48, and it describes a tone, not an event. A planet that rules two houses receives two themes, in line with Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates, and the timing feature places them on a calendar.
Dasha of a planet sitting in the 3rd
Here the text is less uniform than Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 suggests. In Ch. 47, the chapter on each planet's own Dasha, Sl. 23-26 say that if the Moon is in the 3rd there will be happiness off and on during her period. The Mars verses that follow say that a strong Mars in an angle or in the 3rd brings gain of wealth through valour and success over opponents, with some unfavourable effects possible at the end of the Dasha. The Mars Mahadasha page covers that period in full.
The sub-period chapters (Ch. 52 to 60) point the same way. Verse after verse lists the 3rd alongside the angles, the trines and the 11th as a good placement for the Antardasha lord. So two statements stand in the same book: a general rule that Dashas connected with the 3rd are unfavourable, and many specific verses in which a strong planet in the 3rd delivers. This page does not reconcile them beyond noting that the specific verses nearly always add "with strength" or a dignity condition. Antardasha and Pratyantar explains how sub-periods are layered.
Transits through the 3rd from the Moon
Transit results in this app are counted from the natal Moon sign, not from the Ascendant. In the Gochar calculator, Saturn, the Sun, Mars, Rahu and Ketu passing through the 3rd sign from your Moon are marked favourable, described as gains through direct effort, or steady and disciplined progress in Saturn's case. Jupiter, Mercury and Venus in the same position are marked indifferent. The pattern matches the Upachaya idea: the 3rd from the Moon suits hard planets better than soft ones. The engine also carries the source's table of intensified positions, in which Jupiter in the 3rd from the Moon is the flagged combination, a prompt to be more deliberate. Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in a sign and Jupiter about a year, so these are long windows.
How to read the 3rd house in your own chart
- Find the house. Run the birth chart calculator with an accurate birth time and place. The 3rd house is the third sign from your Ascendant. Without a birth time the Ascendant, and so every house, is unknown.
- Note what is in it and what aspects it. Ch. 14 Sl. 1 asks first whether a benefic joins or aspects the house.
- Find the 3rd lord from the table above and see where it sits. An angle, a trine or exaltation is the favourable condition of Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6. Then read its row in the Ch. 24 table.
- Find Mars, the fixed significator, and apply the same test. The Mars page explains its dignities.
- Check strength before believing any verse. Ch. 14 Sl. 4 and 15 and Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 all make the result depend on it.
- Look at the Drekkana, the Vikram Pada and the Bhratru Karaka as second opinions on sibling matters.
- Look up when the 3rd lord's Mahadasha or Antardasha runs, and when slow planets cross the 3rd from your Moon.
The methodology page describes how positions are calculated and where the limits are, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.
Common misreadings
- "A malefic in the 3rd is bad." The tradition says nearly the opposite for the person's own courage. The 3rd is an Upachaya, Saravali gives valour to the Sun, Mars and Saturn there, and Ch. 39 Sl. 17 builds a Raja Yoga on a malefic in the 3rd. The cost the texts name is to sibling matters, not to the person.
- "The 3rd lord is always harmful." Ch. 34 does say the lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th give evil effects, but it also ranks the 3rd as the least of the three and says a more prominent second lordship overrides it. Ch. 24 gives the 3rd lord self-made wealth in the 1st and all kinds of happiness in the 10th.
- "Sun, Mars or Saturn in the 3rd means losing a sibling." Ch. 14 Sl. 14 is followed directly by Sl. 15, which requires strength to be assessed first. The Bhrigu Sutras add that a benefic's association or a strong 3rd lord changes the result. No single placement settles it.
- "The 3rd house shows all siblings." Ch. 32 says younger brothers and sisters. Elder siblings appear in Ch. 14 only in the counting verses and in Sl. 14.
- "The 3rd house is the house of communication." That reading comes from the longer modern list in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary. Parashara's own list is valour, servants, co-born, instruction and journeys.
- "Reading the house is enough." Every source here judges through three things together: the house, its lord, and Mars.
- "Vikram Pada is another name for the 3rd house." It is the Arudha of the 3rd, a derived point that usually falls in a different sign.
Frequently asked questions
- What does the 3rd house represent in Vedic astrology?
- BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4 lists valour, servants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction, journeys and a parent's death. Ch. 32 specifies younger siblings and names Mars as the house's fixed significator. Later commentary, such as the Bhrigu Sutras edition used here, adds communication, writing, short travel, neighbours and the hands and arms.
- Why is it called Sahaja Bhava?
- Sahaja is the name BPHS uses for the third house in its list of the twelve Bhavas (Ch. 7 Sl. 37-38), and the translation renders its subject as the "co-born", meaning brothers and sisters. The Arudha of the same house is called Vikram or Bhratru in Ch. 29.
- Is the 3rd house a good house or a bad house?
- It is neither a trine nor a dusthana. BPHS classes it as an Upachaya and an Apoklima. Planets placed in it, malefics especially, are read favourably for courage. Its lord is treated as mildly troublesome by Ch. 34. Whether it works well in a given chart depends on the lord's placement and strength.
- Which planet does best in the 3rd house?
- The sources favour natural malefics. Saravali Ch. 30 gives courage to the Sun, Mars and Saturn in the 3rd, and BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 2 treats Mars there with the 3rd lord as a good condition. BPHS Ch. 48 says Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in the 3rd. See Mars in the 3rd house for the fullest case.
- Can the 3rd house tell me how many siblings I have?
- The texts contain counting rules: BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 7-13 and the Navamsa method in Saravali Ch. 34. They were written for very large families, the manuscripts vary, and both texts make the result depend on strength. This app does not compute a sibling count from them.
- What happens in the Mahadasha of the 3rd lord?
- BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 describes it as unfavourable, and this app words it as an effort-heavy period for courage and sibling matters. If the same planet rules a stronger house, that lordship also colours the period. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator shows when it runs for you.
- Which divisional chart goes with the 3rd house?
- The Drekkana, or D3. BPHS Ch. 7 says happiness through co-born is read from it. You can compute yours with the Drekkana calculator.
- Do I need my birth time to read my 3rd house?
- Yes. Houses are counted from the Ascendant, and the Ascendant cannot be found without a time of birth. Without a birth time this app does not assign houses at all. Transits through the 3rd from your Moon sign can still be read, because they depend only on the Moon's sign.
- Does an empty 3rd house mean no courage or no siblings?
- No source used here says so. BPHS Ch. 14 judges the house mainly through its lord and Mars, and Ch. 24 gives a full reading for the 3rd lord in every house whether or not the 3rd itself is occupied.
Birth Chart (Kundli)
