What the classical texts actually say about Ketu in the 3rd house: the brief sutra Ketu shares with Rahu, the Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines for Ketu alone, the BPHS exception that lets the nodes do well in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, Ketu's sub-period rules, and why this app's row still reads it as testing.

The 3rd house is where the classical sources are kindest to Ketu, and where this app's reading and theirs are furthest apart. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them, read a 3rd-house Ketu as wealth, standing and enemies beaten, each with a sour clause attached; BPHS gives a Ketu Dasha from the 3rd the acquisition of a kingdom and good relations with friends; and a bracketed line in BPHS Ch. 48 exempts the nodes from the rule that makes the 3rd a troublesome house for a Dasha. The engine's row still uses its testing sentence, for a reason that has nothing to do with the 3rd.

This page describes rules, not a person. See also Ketu in Vedic astrology, the 3rd house, Sahaja Bhava and Rahu in the 9th house; the Birth Chart calculator shows your Ketu's house.

A note on sources

Every classical line here was checked against the corpus texts this app uses: BPHS (English translation), Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are not in the corpus; their lines are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Ketu is the thinner node in these books: the Bhrigu Sutras give both nodes one shared sutra per house, Saravali has no node-in-house verses, and the modern casebook's 3rd-house rules are written for Rahu. Nothing written for Rahu alone is presented here as Ketu's.

The 3rd house in brief

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4 lists what is known from the 3rd: valour, servants and attendants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction (Upadesh), journeys and a parent's death. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 116-117) gives Parashara's groupings: the 3rd is an apoklima and an upachaya, a growing house, along with the 6th, 10th and 11th. It is neither a kendra nor a trikona, and not one of the trika houses. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1, the opening of the 3rd-house chapter, says a 3rd joined or aspected by a benefic gives co-born and courage; Ketu is not named there.

The texts speak of this house in two voices. As a place it is an upachaya, where hard planets are said to do well. As a lordship it is on the short list of difficult houses: Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give "unfavourable effects" in the Dasha of the 3rd lord, and Sl. 18-20 extend that to the Dashas of grahas placed in the 3rd, 6th or 11th and of grahas joined to them. The translation then closes the passage with a bracket: Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in Sahaj, Ari and Labh, the 3rd, 6th and 11th. A planet that would otherwise be read as unfavourable for sitting in the 3rd is, when it is Ketu, read the other way.

The shared sutra, and the lines written for Ketu alone

The Bhrigu Sutras deal with the nodes in Part II Ch. 8. Its translator notes at the head of the chapter that the author gives the same effects for Rahu and Ketu in each house, presumably because they are always seventh to each other, while "the other authorities" give separate effects. So the sutra for the 3rd is not Ketu's alone; the Rahu page carries the same words. What is Ketu's own is the pair of lines from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani that the Bhrigu Sutras print under Other Views.

Bhrigu Sutras Part II Ch. 8, bhrigu-sutras.txt lines 4373-4385. Paraphrased, every clause kept.

The shared sutra is agricultural and specific, and the only one of its two clauses that has a condition is the neck mark, which needs a benefic with the node. It is a body association, not a health forecast. A modern body map in Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 214) also puts the neck under the 3rd house, but it names Rahu and Mars there, not Ketu, so it supports the house half of the sutra and not a Ketu half. Not medical advice.

Ketu's two lines agree on the main point and each carries a qualification. Phaladeepika gives wealth, power, reputation and long life, adds two domestic goods (the wife's company and a large harvest, which echoes the sutra's oil seeds), and then a loss: loss of brothers. Chamatkar Chintamani gives victory over enemies and great prosperity, then two social costs: controversies and no friends. In both, the cost falls on the 3rd house's relational side, brothers and companions, while the gain falls on its strength side. Rahu's lines have the same shape with fewer words: Phaladeepika gives Rahu wealth and determination with friction with brothers, and Chamatkar Chintamani simply courage.

That is the honest summary of the classical Ketu in the 3rd: favourable on wealth, prosperity and enemies, unfavourable on brothers and friends. The app's row, as it happens, names exactly that second theme, distance from siblings, though for a different reason, discussed below.

What Saravali and the modern casebook do not say

Saravali Ch. 30, the house chapter, has no verse for Rahu or Ketu in any house; checked through the whole chapter. The Bhrigu Sutras' own 1st-house Other Views note that Brihat Jataka and Saravali did not deal with the nodes by house. Saravali's one line for the 3rd, Ch. 12 Sl. 3-5, says that evils at birth are destroyed if Rahu is in the 3rd, 6th or 11th aspected by benefics. It names Rahu, not Ketu, and this page does not transfer it.

The same goes for Chatterjee. His rule on the auspicious periods (p. 121, item 8) gives material wealth in the Dasha of a Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from the Lagna or Moon, and his transit chapter (pp. 317-318) gives Rahu good results in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon, Sun or Ascendant. Both are written for Rahu. The two of his rules that do cover Ketu are general: a planet in close company with Rahu or Ketu gives poor results in its own Dasha, the closer the worse (p. 124, item 13), and the transiting nodes give bad results when they pass the houses they aspect in the natal chart (p. 317). For a natal Ketu in the 3rd, that natal aspect is on the 9th.

Ketu's Mahadasha from the 3rd

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 71 introduces Ketu as "a headless trunk (Kabandha)" among the grahas, and Sl. 72-77 sort his Dasha by house into three groups.

  1. Ketu in a kendra, a trikona or the 11th, in a benefic sign, exalted or in its own sign: cordial relations with the king, desired headship of a country or village, conveyances, happiness from children, gain from foreign countries, happiness from the wife, cattle.
  2. Ketu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th (Sahaj, Ari or Labh): acquisition of a kingdom, good relations with friends, and elephants. The 3rd is named here directly, with no further condition.
  3. Ketu in the 2nd, 8th or 12th, or aspected by a malefic: confinement, loss of kin and home, anxieties, illness.

The same passage gives the course of the period: Raj Yoga at the start, possibilities of fearfulness in the middle, and ailments and distant journeys in the last part. The third group has a clause that matters for the 3rd: "or receives a Drishti from a malefic". A Ketu in the 3rd always receives Rahu's 7th aspect from the 9th, and Rahu is a malefic. The text does not say whether the other node counts for this clause, and this page does not settle it. A Mars or Saturn aspect on the 3rd would plainly bring it in.

Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time a Dasha's results by the lord's decanate and reverse the order for retrograde grahas: "The Dasha effects of Rahu and Ketu, who are always retrograde, will always be realized in the reverse order." A Ketu in the last ten degrees of its sign delivers early in its seven years, one in the first ten late. Ketu Mahadasha sets out the period sub-period by sub-period, and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

For the Mahadasha, then, the 3rd is the house where the BPHS rules quoted here point the same way: Sl. 72-77 give a kingdom and friends, the Ch. 48 bracket gives favourable results, and the general test of Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, which flags the 6th, 8th and 12th, raises no objection. Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24, which list the houses where the nodes become Marakas (the 1st, 7th, 8th and 12th), do not include the 3rd; this app does not compute life-span, and the list is mentioned only to show that the 3rd is absent from it.

Ketu's sub-periods when Ketu is in the 3rd

The Antar Dasha chapters (Ch. 52-60) give a rule for Ketu's sub-period in every Mahadasha. Some count from the Lagna and name the 3rd; one counts the 3rd from the Mahadasha lord; several never name the 3rd at all. The table separates those cases. The texts also prescribe remedial measures for the adverse cases, which this app does not prescribe.

Mahadasha (BPHS chapter, slokas)Does the rule reach a 3rd-house Ketu? What it says
Sun (Ch. 52 Sl. 58-64)Yes, by name (Sahaj)Happiness from wife and children, satisfaction, more friends, gain of clothes and renown, if Ketu is in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th
Moon (Ch. 53 Sl. 47-49)Yes, with strengthWealth, enjoyment, family happiness and religious inclination if Ketu is in a kendra, trikona or the 3rd and strong; some loss of wealth at the start, then well
Mars (Ch. 54 Sl. 48-51)Yes, by name (Sahaj)The king's beneficence, wealth, small land gains at first and larger later, a son, authority from government, if Ketu is in a kendra, trikona, the 3rd or 11th, or with benefics
Rahu (Ch. 55 Sl. 40-45)NoForeign journeys and some trouble by default; gains with a benefic's association or aspect, or a relation to the Lagna lord; the 3rd is not named
Jupiter (Ch. 56 Sl. 32-34)NoModerate gains with a benefic's association or aspect; adverse 6th, 8th or 12th from Jupiter or with malefics
Saturn (Ch. 57 Sl. 16-23)Only from the Dasha lordEvil effects "even if" Ketu is well placed; but strength, courage and audience with the king if Ketu is in a kendra, trikona, the 3rd or 11th counted from Saturn
Mercury (Ch. 58 Sl. 6-11)NoGood with benefics in a kendra or trikona, with the Lagna lord or a Yoga Karaka, or in a kendra or the 11th from Mercury
Ketu (Ch. 59 Sl. 1-6)NoFamily happiness and recognition, "but mental agony", in a kendra or trikona or related to the 9th, 10th or 4th lord; the 2nd and 7th bring illness
Venus (Ch. 60 Sl. 67-72)UnclearGood if Ketu is exalted, in its own sign, related to a Yoga Karaka or has positional strength, with the translator's bracket: "It is not laid down anywhere, in which Bhava Ketu does get positional strength"
BPHS Ch. 52-60, bphs.txt lines 6158-7760. The adverse cases (8th or 12th from the Mahadasha lord, Ketu in or related to the 2nd or 7th, Ketu with malefics) apply to a 3rd-house Ketu only when their own condition is met.

Three chapters name the 3rd from the Lagna, all favourably; the Moon chapter adds that Ketu must have strength. Saturn's chapter counts the 3rd from Saturn, not from the Lagna, so a 3rd-house Ketu meets it only when Saturn is in the Lagna. Four chapters never mention the 3rd, and in those a 3rd-house Ketu is read by its company and its distance from the Mahadasha lord. The Venus chapter's bracket is a useful piece of honesty from the translator: the text asks for a positional strength it never defines for Ketu.

Whose agent is it? Ketu and the lord of the 3rd

Ketu owns no sign in this app's tables. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give the results of the bhava lord they join or the bhava they occupy, and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 142, rule 10) says the nodes, owning no houses, give results by position, association and the rulers of the houses they occupy. The Bhrigu Sutras' closing comments (p. 114-115) set an order, reported as "a strong school of thought": a node acts for the planet it is conjoined with; failing that, for a planet aspecting it; only when it is neither joined nor aspected does it stand for the lord of its sign. In whole-sign houses that last lord is the lord of the 3rd itself, with the difficult Dasha reputation Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give it.

There is a tension the texts leave standing. The Ch. 48 bracket is written for the node's placement, not for the lord it stands in for. A Ketu alone in the 3rd acting for the 3rd lord is covered by both rules, and the texts quoted here do not say how they combine.

The same comments give three points from Uttara Kalamrita. A node "endowed with strength" gives effects like the planet owning the house it occupies or joins. The nodes become auspicious in a trikona or kendra, or with the lord of the kendra or kona they occupy, or with any kendra or kona lord. The 3rd is neither a kendra nor a kona, so only the last route is open: a kendra or trikona lord sitting in the 3rd with Ketu. BPHS Ch. 54 Sl. 50-51 make the same move for the Mars period, where Ketu "assumes the role of a Yog Karak" if it is joined to a Yoga Karaka.

Counted the other way, Ketu in the 3rd is aspected by any planet with Rahu in the 9th, by Mars in the 8th or 12th, by Jupiter in the 7th or 11th, and by Saturn in the 1st or 6th, using the special aspects of BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 that the engine also uses.

The 3rd sign, Lagna by Lagna

The books disagree on Ketu's dignities, and the disagreement decides how a 3rd-house Ketu fares under the sign conditions of Sl. 72-77 (exalted or own sign) and the Venus sub-period. In whole-sign houses the 3rd sign is fixed by the Lagna.

Dignities: BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39; Uttara Kalamrita and Sanketnidhi as quoted in Bhrigu Sutras Part I p. 13; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara pp. 82-83. This app applies none of them.

Virgo rising is the case all three of BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara agree on: Ketu in Scorpio in the 3rd, exalted, and in BPHS also its own sign. That Ketu meets the first group of Sl. 72-77 by sign and the second by house at once. Libra rising, Ketu in Sagittarius, is the next best supported. Pisces rising puts Ketu in Taurus, a debility in two of the schemes, and Aries rising puts it in Gemini, a debility in Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara only.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's different Ketu

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 82-84) differs from BPHS in two ways that touch this house. It makes Ketu lord of Aries rather than Scorpio, and it gives Ketu aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from itself. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, so a BPHS Ketu has only the 7th aspect. From the 3rd, that is one aspect, on the 9th; under the other scheme, Ketu in the 3rd would also aspect the 5th and the 12th. This app follows BPHS.

The book also characterises Ketu as standing for hardships and isolation, and, when well placed, for a spiritual and meditative influence inclining the person toward renunciation. That is a description of the graha, not of the 3rd house; the book gives no per-house reading for the nodes. It sits oddly beside Ketu's 3rd-house lines in Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani, which are worldly: wealth, harvests, enemies beaten.

Rahu in the 9th: the other half of this placement

Ketu and Rahu stand at the same degree of opposite signs, so in this app's whole-sign houses a Ketu in the 3rd always has Rahu in the 9th, and Ketu's single aspect falls on it. The axis joins the house of effort and siblings to the house of fortune, father and dharma. The shared Bhrigu sutra for the 9th (Sutra 24) is largely unfavourable, with childlessness, dependence on others for a living and irreligion among its clauses. Rahu's own 9th-house lines are mixed: Phaladeepika gives bitter speech and no charitable deeds, but leadership of a village or town; Chamatkar Chintamani gives good qualities, pilgrimages and kindness. So the node the texts like sits in the 3rd, opposite a 9th the shared sutra reads harshly. Rahu in the 9th house takes that side, and Ketu in the 9th house the reverse arrangement.

How this app reads Ketu in the 3rd

Your Kundali row for Ketu turns favourable only for a planet exalted, in moolatrikona, own or friendly sign, and outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The engine returns Neutral dignity for Ketu in every sign, so every Ketu in the 3rd gets one sentence: "classically more testing, tending toward real disinterest or distance from siblings under affliction". The favourable string for this house, "quiet, self-reliant courage - Ketu does well as a shadow planet in this upachaya house", is in the code but unreachable. The unreachable string is the one that agrees with the texts' main point; the printed one happens to match their sour clauses about brothers and friends.

The Mahadasha sentence uses the testing wording, "disconnection, unexpected loss and a pull toward isolation", and the three-level grade reads neutral. Only a Ketu in the 1st reaches the favourable sentence, and only the 6th, 8th and 12th turn the grade to challenging. In an earlier 4,000-chart run of the engine, every chart with Ketu in the 3rd got the testing sentence and the neutral grade; that sweep was not repeated for this version. Sl. 72-77, the Ch. 48 bracket and the sub-period rules are not coded.

A transit is a different measurement. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, and with the malefic rule it applies to Ketu, transiting Ketu in the 3rd sign from the Moon reads favourable, described as gains through direct effort. Ketu takes about 566 days to cross a sign, moving backward.

A worked chart

An illustrative birth, not a real person: 28 February 1989, 13:30 IST, New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E), computed in this app's engine. Gemini rises at 14.42 degrees. Ketu is at 11.00 degrees of Leo, in Magha pada 4, its own nakshatra, in the 3rd house; Rahu is at 11.00 Aquarius in the 9th with the Sun and Venus. The Moon is in Scorpio in the 6th, Mars at 29.63 Aries in the 11th, Mercury in Capricorn in the 8th, Jupiter in Taurus in the 12th and Saturn in Sagittarius in the 7th.

Nothing joins Ketu, and no special aspect reaches it, but the Sun and Venus sit with Rahu and so aspect Ketu by the 7th aspect every graha casts. By the agent rule this Ketu acts for them. For Gemini rising the Sun rules Leo, the 3rd itself, and Venus rules the 5th, a trikona, and the 12th. Venus is a 5th lord aspecting Ketu, not joined to it, so the Uttara Kalamrita route (a kona lord in the 3rd with Ketu) is not met, though BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 count a Dasha aspected by a trikona lord as favourable in general. Venus is also a benefic aspecting the 3rd, which meets BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 for the house, and would supply the benefic for the shared sutra's neck-mark clause only if aspect counts as association, which the sutra does not say.

Under Sl. 72-77 this Ketu is in the second group by house. Leo is neither exalted nor own sign in any scheme, so the first group is not met. Rahu's aspect is the only malefic one, so the third group's malefic-aspect clause turns on whether the other node counts. The engine prints the row as testing and the Mahadasha as testing, graded neutral.

The Moon in Anuradha, a Saturn nakshatra, put Ketu's Mahadasha from 3 June 2015 to 2 June 2022. Ketu is in the middle ten degrees of Leo, so the reversed decanate rule gives no early or late emphasis. In that Mahadasha the sub-period table above applies with Ketu counted from each Antar Dasha lord in turn. The Ketu page works a second 3rd-house case, a 1991 chart with Ketu in Gemini acting for a weak Mercury, in its worked charts; the same disagreement between sentence and sloka appears there.

Checking a Ketu in the 3rd in your own chart

  1. Confirm the birth time: Ketu's sign barely depends on it, its house entirely (what a missing birth time costs). Within two degrees of a sign boundary, the mean or true node can decide the sign.
  2. List any planet in the 3rd with Ketu; by the agent rule its lordships are what Ketu mostly delivers. Failing that, list the planets aspecting it; failing both, read the lord of the 3rd.
  3. Note Ketu's sign and check the Lagna table above: an exalted or own-sign Ketu meets both groups of Sl. 72-77.
  4. Check for a malefic aspect other than Rahu's (Mars from the 8th or 12th, Saturn from the 1st or 6th): that brings in the third group.
  5. Test Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator against the tables above, and the lord's strength in the Shad Bala calculator, which has no row for Ketu itself.
  6. Read the other end of the axis in Rahu in the 9th house, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
Is Ketu in the 3rd house good?
In the classical sources checked here, broadly yes, with qualifications. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani read it as wealth, prosperity and enemies beaten, with loss of brothers, controversies and few friends attached; BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 give its period a kingdom and good relations with friends; and Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 exempt the nodes from the 3rd house's difficult Dasha reputation.
What does Ketu in the 3rd say about siblings?
Phaladeepika, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, includes loss of brothers among otherwise favourable results, and Chamatkar Chintamani says there will be no friends. The app's row names distance from siblings too, but it prints that sentence for every 3rd-house Ketu alike.
Is the Bhrigu sutra for Ketu different from Rahu's?
No. The Bhrigu Sutras give one sutra for both nodes in each house: for the 3rd, abundant oil seeds, and a mark on the neck if the node is with a benefic. Only the quoted Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines are separate.
Does Saravali cover Ketu in the 3rd?
No. Its house chapter has no node verses, and its one 3rd-house line for the nodes, in the chapter on evils cancelled at birth, names Rahu only.
Is transiting Ketu in the 3rd from my Moon also good?
In the Gochar calculator, yes: the 3rd from the Moon is one of the four good positions for the natural malefics, Ketu included. That is a transit counted from the Moon, a separate measurement from a natal Ketu in the 3rd from the Lagna.
Why does the app call my Ketu in the 3rd "classically more testing"?
Because the row's favourable wording needs a strong dignity, and the engine gives Ketu none in any sign. Every Ketu in the 3rd gets the same sentence. Who joins and aspects your Ketu, which the texts treat as decisive, is something the row does not look at.
Is my Ketu in the 3rd exalted or debilitated?
The texts do not agree. BPHS Ch. 47 exalts Ketu in Scorpio; Uttara Kalamrita, as the Bhrigu Sutras report it, adds a fall in Taurus; Sanketnidhi exalts it in Sagittarius; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara exalts it in Scorpio and Sagittarius and debilitates it in Taurus and Gemini; and a strong school gives the nodes no sign at all. This app assigns Ketu no dignity. The table above shows which rising signs put Ketu in each of those signs in the 3rd.
