Planet in house

At the 9th house the sources quoted for Rahu split: the Bhrigu Sutras and Phaladeepika are harsh, Chamatkar Chintamani is warm, and BPHS has Rahu in a trine performing religious sacrifices. Here is each line read from the books, the Dasha and sub-period rules that name a trine, the BPHS combination easy to misread, and how the app reads it.

The 9th is a trikona and the house of fortune, dharma and the father. It is also where the authorities quoted for Rahu disagree most openly: two read the placement harshly, one reads it warmly, and BPHS, in a chapter about a different house, has Rahu in a trine performing religious sacrifices. Rahu, the Moon's ascending node, owns no sign and has no dignity in this app, so it is read through the house and its company. This page sets out each line as it stands in the books, the Dasha rules that do and do not reach the 9th, one BPHS combination that is easy to misread, and what the app prints. For the node, see Rahu in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 9th house (Dharma Bhava).

Where these citations come from

Every classical line on this page was read in the source texts: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) in its English translation, the Bhrigu Sutras with its "Other Views" and commentary, Saravali, and two modern books, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (2000) and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (1994). Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani, Uttara Kalamrita and Jataka Chintamani are not available to us directly; their lines are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology quote them. Verdicts on a person's religious character are reported only as what a text says.

The house Rahu occupies here

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 10 reads: "Fortunes, wife's brother, religion, brother's wife, visits to shrines etc. be known from Dharm Bhava." The father is absent from that verse but not from the book: Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 say the 9th and the 9th from the Sun deal with the father, Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 repeat that the 9th from the Sun denotes him, and most of Ch. 20, the 9th-house chapter, is about him. Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 list the fixed significator of each house and give Jupiter for the 9th; Sl. 35-37 call the Kendras and the Konas (the 5th and 9th) auspicious houses, "the association with which turns even evil into auspiciousness". That sentence is general, but it is the ground the node-specific rules below are built on.

Ch. 34 Sl. 16 gives the base rule: Rahu and Ketu give predominantly the effects of the house lord they join, or of the house they occupy. Sl. 17 makes a node a Yoga Karaka when it is in a Kendra and joined or aspected by a Kendra or Kona lord. The 9th is a Kona, not a Kendra, so Sl. 17 does not apply here; the 9th has its own route, through Uttara Kalamrita, set out further down.

Saravali on the 9th, and its silence on the nodes

Saravali gives the 9th a chapter of its own (Ch. 32, "Ninth House and Effects Thereof"). It opens by saying this house should be analysed before any other, since no benefic result comes without fortune, and it counts the 9th from whichever is stronger, the Lagna or the Moon. Sl. 3 says the house occupied by the 9th lord and the planet occupying the 9th "will have a say on ones fortune". Sl. 4 adds that if the 9th is occupied or aspected by its own lord, fortune is made in one's own country; if others join or aspect it, "the dawn of fortune will be elsewhere". These are general rules for any occupant. Saravali never names Rahu or Ketu in that chapter, and Ch. 30, its chapter on planets in houses, has no verse for either node at all. The Bhrigu Sutras say the same of it in their first-house "Other Views": Saravali and Brihat Jataka "have not dealt with" the nodes in the houses. Reading Sl. 4 as a Rahu rule would be filling a gap the book leaves open, so this page notes the sentence and goes no further.

What the classical sources say

The Bhrigu Sutras devote Part II Ch. 8 to both nodes. The translator's head-note says the author "has given the same effects of both Rahu and Ketu" in every house, presumably because they always stand seventh to each other, while "the other authorities" give separate effects. So the sutra below is shared with Ketu in the 9th word for word, and only the "Other Views" printed under it are written for Rahu alone.

Read directly in bhrigu-sutras.txt (Part II Ch. 8), bphs.txt (Ch. 21) and saravali.txt. Short phrases quoted; the rest paraphrased.

An earlier version of this page shortened Phaladeepika to "harsh in speech, but a leader". The book's line has three parts, not two: bitter speech, no charitable deeds, and leadership of a village or town. The middle clause matters for the 9th, since charity and pious works are part of what the house is read for; it is restored here. The children clause of the sutra is shared by both nodes and is a flat statement with no condition attached; the app makes no prediction about anyone's children.

For contrast, the same page of the Bhrigu Sutras prints separate lines for Ketu in the 9th. Phaladeepika makes Ketu sinfully disposed, fatherless, unfortunate and poor; Chamatkar Chintamani makes Ketu anxious for children and earning with the help of people outside the native's own faith. The split between the two nodes is real in the "Other Views": Chamatkar Chintamani's warm reading belongs to Rahu, not to Ketu.

Where the authorities disagree

The lines cannot all be true of one person in the same way. The Bhrigu Sutras read dependence and irreligion. Phaladeepika mixes bitter speech and an absence of charity with local leadership. Chamatkar Chintamani reads good qualities, pilgrimage and kindness, the opposite of the Sutras on religion. BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 3, sitting in the 10th-house chapter rather than the 9th, has Rahu in any angle or trine performing a Vedic sacrifice, which is the opposite of irreligion and the strongest single line in Rahu's favour at this house. None of them names a condition under which its reading holds and the others do not.

There is a pattern even in the disagreement. Each authority is speaking about the house's own subject, religion, charity and fortune, and reading Rahu as disturbing it or as expressing it unusually. Pilgrimage in Chamatkar Chintamani is travel tied to religion; irreligion in the Sutras is distance from it; the sacrifice in BPHS is religion performed as an act. The app's own favourable line for the 9th takes a further route, fortune through foreign or unconventional connections, which echoes the foreign thread in the BPHS Rahu Dasha passages and in the modern travel rules below rather than any of the house lines.

A BPHS combination that is not about Rahu in the 9th

BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 30 reads a person "devoid of fortunes" if Rahu is "in the 9th from Dharm Bhava", its dispositor is in the 8th, and the 9th lord is in its fall. The 9th from the 9th is the 5th house, not the 9th. The sloka is about Rahu in the 5th, and even there it needs all three conditions together. Quoting it for a Rahu in the 9th is a misreading worth avoiding. The 5th-house case is on Rahu in the 5th house, where the three conditions can be checked against a real chart.

Ch. 20 does contain one condition that does place Rahu in the 9th. Sl. 13-25 are a block of combinations about the father's life, each fixing an age, and one of them pairs the Sun in the 7th from the 9th (the 3rd house) with Rahu in the 7th from the 3rd (the 9th). It is a two-part condition, Sun and Rahu together, and the block as a whole sits in the same chapter as the lines on a fortunate father. This page names it because leaving it out would misstate the book, but does not reproduce the ages; this app computes no such thing and makes no prediction about any parent.

What BPHS Ch. 20 weighs instead

The 9th-house chapter does not judge fortune by an occupant on its own. Nearly every verse joins two or three conditions, and the factors it keeps returning to are the 9th lord, the Lagna lord and Jupiter, the 9th's fixed significator. Sl. 32 closes the chapter by saying these effects "may be estimated with the help of the state of the Lords of Lagn and Dharm Bhava".

  • Sl. 1: fortunate if the 9th lord is in the 9th with strength.
  • Sl. 2: extremely fortunate with Jupiter in the 9th, the 9th lord in an angle and a strong Lagna lord.
  • Sl. 29: gains of wealth and conveyances if the Lagna lord and the 9th lord exchange the 1st and 9th, with Jupiter in the 7th.
  • Sl. 12 and 31: two poverty combinations, one built on a weak 10th and 3rd lord with the 9th lord in fall or combust, the other on Saturn and the Moon in the 9th with the Lagna lord in fall.

Rahu in the 9th does not block any of these. A chart with Rahu in the 9th and the 9th lord there too meets Sl. 1 if that lord is strong, and Uttara Kalamrita's kona-lord rule below at the same time. A chart with Jupiter joining Rahu meets half of Sl. 2, though Jupiter is then also the graha Rahu speaks for. The chapter's three legs, house, lord and Jupiter, stay the frame; Rahu is one factor inside it.

Rahu speaks for others: the agent rule at the 9th

The commentary closing the Bhrigu Sutras chapter (pp. 114-115) records "a strong school of thought" that the nodes own no signs and "act as agents": first for a planet they are conjoined with, then for a planet that aspects them, and only when neither exists for the lord of the house they occupy. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara states the same idea as a rule of interpretation (p. 142, rule 10): the nodes, not owning houses, give results by position, association and the rulers of the houses they occupy. At the 9th the last fallback is the 9th lord itself, the lord of fortune.

  • A graha joined with Rahu in the 9th is its first voice. A benefic there eases every reading on this page.
  • Ketu is always in the 3rd. Whether Ketu's glance on Rahu counts as an "aspect" for the agent rule depends on the aspect scheme; BPHS Ch. 26 names no node aspects, this app gives each node a 7th aspect.
  • With no company and no aspect, Rahu reads through the 9th lord: a 9th lord in a Kendra or Kona is the better backdrop for Ch. 34 Sl. 16, one in the 6th, 8th or 12th the weaker.
  • Because the 9th and the Sun both bear on the father, the Sun's position is worth noting alongside Rahu's when the father is the question. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 118) adds that Ketu, not Rahu, is the karaka for paternal relations; Rahu it gives the maternal side.

Uttara Kalamrita, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it

The same commentary gives three points from Uttara Kalamrita, and the 9th is named in two of them. Point (2): if one node and the lord of a trikona are in the 9th or 10th, "the yoga will cause prosperity", and even a conjunction of either node with a trikona lord "will prove beneficial". Point (3): the nodes "become auspicious" in a trikona or kendra, or when joined with the lord of the kendra or kona they occupy, or with any kendra or kona lord; but if the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th, the auspiciousness of the yoga is lost. The printed text of these points is garbled in places, and this page uses only the clauses that read plainly.

Point (2) also offers a second form, one node in the 9th and the other in the 10th. That form can never occur: the two nodes are always exactly opposite, so when Rahu is in the 9th, Ketu is in the 3rd. Only the first form, Rahu with a trikona lord in the 9th, is available to a 9th-house Rahu. In whole-sign houses the trikona lords are the lords of the 1st, 5th and 9th signs.

The spoiling clause can be checked by rising sign. The 9th lord also owns the 12th for Aries rising (Jupiter, lord of Sagittarius and Pisces) and Libra rising (Mercury, lord of Gemini and Virgo), and also owns the 8th for Gemini rising (Saturn, lord of Aquarius and Capricorn). For those three Lagnas, on this reading, Rahu's trikona yoga at the 9th is lost. For the other nine it is not touched.

Two modern books disagree with BPHS on signs and aspects

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 give Rahu exaltation in Taurus, Moolatrikona in Gemini and own sign in Aquarius, with "some sages" making Virgo his own. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 82-83) gives Rahu Capricorn as his own sign, exaltation in Taurus and Gemini and debilitation in Scorpio and Sagittarius, and says that "if he is well-placed he will bestow power and material success". For a 9th-house Rahu that changes the reading for an Aries Lagna (Rahu in Sagittarius, debilitated in that book and Ketu's Moolatrikona in BPHS) and for a Taurus Lagna (Rahu in Capricorn, his own sign in that book, nothing in BPHS).

The same book gives Rahu aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th from himself. From the 9th those fall on the 11th, the 3rd and the 6th. Advanced Predictive Astrology, discussing transits (p. 317), uses yet another set, the 5th, 7th, 9th and 12th. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give every graha the 7th aspect and reserve special aspects for Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, without naming the nodes. This app follows BPHS and gives Rahu only the 7th, so in the Shad Bala calculator and the yogas calculator a 9th-house Rahu touches only the 3rd. Anyone using either modern scheme will see Rahu reaching houses the app does not mark.

Ketu in the 3rd and the single aspect

From the 9th Rahu's 7th aspect falls on the 3rd, where Ketu always is. The 3rd-house side is on Ketu in the 3rd house, and the reverse arrangement on Rahu in the 3rd house. The contrast is sharp: the 3rd is one of the houses where BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 say, in a translator's bracket, that the nodes "give favourable results", and Saravali Ch. 12 Sl. 3-5 has Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th, aspected by benefics, cancelling the evils of a birth. Neither rule reaches the 9th, but both apply to the Ketu opposite it.

Both nodes count as malefics in the engine. A graha in the 3rd or 9th is aspected by both, which lowers its aspect score and rules a benefic there out of Adhi and Amala Yoga.

Rahu's Mahadasha from the 9th

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-43 sort Rahu's 18-year period three ways. If Rahu is in exaltation "etc.", the period brings wealth, conveyances, a new house, children, "religious inclinations" and recognition from foreign governments. If he is joined or aspected by benefics, in a benefic sign, and in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 11th or 3rd, it brings comforts by government favour and wealth through a foreign government. If he is in the 8th or 12th, troubles; with a malefic or a Maraka, or debilitated, loss of position and mental agony, with loss at the start, some relief in one's own country in the middle and anxiety at the end.

The 9th is named in none of these house lists: not among the good houses of Sl. 34-39, not among the 8th and 12th of Sl. 40-43. A 9th-house Rahu therefore reaches the Mahadasha text only through its sign and its company. The same holds in the neighbouring rules. Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 list the houses that make a node a Maraka (the 1st, 7th, 8th and 12th), and the 9th is not among them. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 favour the nodes in the 3rd, 6th and 11th; not the 9th. Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 make a Dasha favourable for a lord in the Lagna, exaltation, own or friendly sign, and unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th; a 9th-house Rahu meets neither house clause.

Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time the results by the third of the sign the lord occupies, and add that the effects of Rahu and Ketu, "who are always retrograde, will always be realized in the reverse order". A Rahu in the first ten degrees of its sign delivers late in the period, one in the last ten early. Dates come from the Vimshottari Dasha calculator; the sub-periods are on the Rahu Mahadasha page.

The sub-period rules that name a trine

The Antardasha chapters are where the 9th does appear, because several of them open with "a Kendr, or a Trikon from Lagn". The table lists, for each Mahadasha, what BPHS says of Rahu's sub-period when Rahu is in a trine, and the adverse clauses that can still apply. Where the text counts from the Mahadasha lord rather than the Lagna, the table says so. Several chapters add remedial measures; this app does not prescribe them.

Read in bphs.txt, Ch. 52-60. "8th/12th from" counts from the Mahadasha lord unless the text says Lagna.

Two things stand out. First, the sub-period text for a trine-placed Rahu keeps returning to the 9th house's own subjects, pilgrimage, shrines, holy rivers, sacrifices and long journeys, which sits closer to Chamatkar Chintamani and BPHS Ch. 21 than to the irreligion of the sutra. Second, the Moon chapter warns that a Rahu in a trine gives good results only at the start of its sub-period and trouble later, the reverse of the Sun chapter's bad start and good finish. The text does not reconcile them, and this page does not either.

Modern lines that touch the 9th

Advanced Predictive Astrology calls the 9th the "house of long Voyage". Its foreign-travel chapter (p. 91) puts the Vimshottari period of the 12th lord or of Rahu first among timing factors, and adds that the period of a planet whose 10th house is occupied by Rahu can generate foreign travel. Its Chart 23 (pp. 91-92) has Rahu in the 9th in Libra, with every journey falling in the Rahu-Venus period, Venus being that chart's 12th lord. The same book quotes Jataka Chintamani (p. 88) for Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th taking a person abroad; the 9th is not in that list. These are one modern author's observations from cases, not classical rules.

Its list of Dasha aphorisms (p. 124, no. 22) says that when Rahu and Ketu are in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositors "they give very bad results". For a 9th-house Rahu the dispositor is the 9th lord, so the test is where the 9th lord sits: in the 4th house, Rahu is 6th from it; in the 2nd, 8th from it; in the 10th, 12th from it. On transits (p. 318) it has Rahu good when passing the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th from the Moon, Sun or Lagna; the 9th is not one of them.

How this app reads Rahu in the 9th

The engine returns Neutral for Rahu's dignity in every sign, whatever the books in the table above say. On the Kundali page that means the testing line for the 9th: "a wavering relationship with father or belief under real affliction". The favourable line, "fortune through unconventional or foreign connections - genuinely auspicious in this Trikona, especially when joined with a Trikona lord", needs a strong dignity and cannot be reached. Its last clause is Uttara Kalamrita's point (2) in plain words. The testing line sits nearer the Bhrigu Sutras; the favourable one nearer the foreign thread.

The Mahadasha line applies BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 and passes for Rahu only in the 1st, so in the 9th it reads testing; the quality label reads neutral. As above, Ch. 47 names no 9th-house rule for Rahu's Mahadasha, so the testing label has no house-specific text behind it. It is the default. The sub-period rules in the table are richer than the app's label and are not applied by it.

Transits have a detail specific to the 9th. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and its source gives the malefics no rule for the 9th from the Moon, so the basic verdict for Rahu there is classically unremarkable. But the same source has a table of "intensified" positions, one per graha, and Rahu's is the 9th from the Moon. The engine flags that transit as the house the source marks as most intensified for Rahu, framed in the app's non-fear tone. The natal Rahu in the 9th from the Lagna is a different thing; the flag concerns the transit.

A worked chart

We ran the engine on 9 October 2026 for 10 March 1995, 05:30 IST, New Delhi; every figure matches an earlier run of the same chart. Aquarius rises at 0.93 degrees, so Libra is the 9th. Rahu is at 14.38 Libra in Swati pada 3, in the 9th house; Ketu is at 14.38 Aries in the 3rd. Rahu's dispositor Venus, lord of the 4th and 9th for Aquarius rising, is in Capricorn in the 12th with Mercury. Mars, debilitated in Cancer in the 6th, aspects the 9th by its special 4th-house aspect. The Moon is in Gemini in the 5th, and the Sun and Saturn are in Aquarius on the Lagna. Jupiter is in Scorpio in the 10th.

  • Placement line: Neutral, favourable false, the 9th-house testing sentence.
  • Mahadasha line: testing; quality neutral.
  • Dates: a Mars balance to 15 December 1997, then Rahu's Mahadasha to 16 December 2015, then Jupiter's to 16 December 2031, whose last sub-period, Jupiter-Rahu, runs from 22 July 2029.
  • Kaal Sarp: not present.

Checked by hand. Nothing joins Rahu; Mars and Ketu aspect it, so by the agent rule Rahu speaks first for Mars, lord of the 3rd and 10th here. The dispositor Venus is in the 12th, the weaker side of Ch. 34 Sl. 16. Venus is a trikona lord (the 9th), but it is not in the 9th with Rahu, so Uttara Kalamrita's point (2) is not met; nor is the spoiling clause, since Venus owns the 4th and 9th, not the 8th or 12th. Rahu in Libra is 10th from Venus, not 6th, 8th or 12th, so the modern aphorism 22 does not fire. Counting the 9th from the Sun gives Libra again, since the Sun is on the Lagna: Rahu occupies both of BPHS's father houses at once in this chart, but the Sun is not in the 3rd, so the Ch. 20 father condition is not met. On Ch. 20's frame, the 9th lord in the 12th does not meet Sl. 1, and Jupiter is in the 10th rather than the 9th, so Sl. 2 is not met either.

The sub-period table gives a test with two sides. In Jupiter-Rahu, Rahu is in a trine from the Lagna, which Ch. 56 reads well; but Rahu in Libra is 12th from Jupiter in Scorpio, which the same passage reads as adverse. Both clauses are met, and the text gives no rule for weighing one against the other. Rahu at 14.38 degrees is in the middle third of Libra, so the reversed decanate rule of Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 places its Mahadasha results in the middle of the period either way.

Checking Rahu in your own 9th house

  1. Cast the chart in the birth chart calculator with an exact time and confirm Rahu's house.
  2. Note any graha joined with Rahu, then any aspecting it: those are, in order, the planets Rahu speaks for. Note whether one of them is a trikona lord, the condition of Uttara Kalamrita's point (2).
  3. Find the 9th lord, Rahu's dispositor: its house, its company, and whether it also owns the 8th or 12th (Aries, Gemini and Libra rising). Then note where Jupiter is.
  4. Count the 9th from the Sun as well, for the father, and note whether the Sun is in the 3rd.
  5. For each sub-period, look up the row in the table above and check both the trine clause and the adverse clause.
  6. For transits, note when Rahu reaches the 9th sign from your Moon; that is the intensified position.
Is Rahu in the 9th house good or bad?
The authorities disagree. The Bhrigu Sutras and Phaladeepika are harsh; Chamatkar Chintamani is warm; BPHS Ch. 21 has Rahu in a trine performing religious sacrifices. BPHS's Mahadasha passage for Rahu does not name the 9th, but several of its sub-period rules for a trine-placed Rahu are favourable.
Does Rahu in the 9th make a person irreligious?
The shared Bhrigu sutra says so; Chamatkar Chintamani says the opposite, with pilgrimages, and BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 3 speaks of religious sacrifices. The app makes no judgement on anyone's beliefs.
Is the Bhrigu sutra for Rahu in the 9th the same as for Ketu?
Yes. The translator notes that the author gives the same effects for both nodes in every house. Only the Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines printed under it are separate for Rahu and Ketu.
What about the BPHS line "devoid of fortunes"?
BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 30 concerns Rahu in the 9th from the 9th, which is the 5th house, together with two other conditions. It is not about Rahu in the 9th.
When is Rahu in the 9th a yoga?
By Uttara Kalamrita as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, when Rahu is joined by a trikona lord, or by the lord of the 9th itself, provided the 9th lord does not also own the 8th or 12th. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17's Yoga Karaka rule needs a Kendra and does not apply to the 9th.
Does Saravali say anything about Rahu in the 9th?
No. Its planets-in-houses chapter has no verse for either node, and its 9th-house chapter speaks only of occupants and lords in general.
Why does the app show testing?
Its favourable line needs a dignity the engine never gives Rahu, and its Dasha rule passes for Rahu only in the 1st.
What is the intensified transit?
The Gochara source names one position per graha as intensified; for Rahu it is the 9th from the Moon. The app flags it when Rahu transits there. It is a transit flag; a natal Rahu in the 9th is read separately.
What does Ketu in the 3rd add?
It is always opposite and receives Rahu's aspect, in a house where the nodes are read favourably. See Ketu in the 3rd house.
