Rahu Mahadasha is the eighteen-year stretch of the Vimshottari cycle that belongs to Rahu, the north lunar node. It is the third-longest of the nine periods, after Venus (20) and Saturn (19), and it carries a reputation that runs well ahead of what the primary text says. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) gives Rahu's period two full descriptions, one favourable and one unfavourable, and makes the choice between them depend on where Rahu sits in the chart. This page sets out those conditions with chapter and sloka, the arithmetic of the period, the nine sub-periods, and the exact way this app computes and words its own reading.
How to use this page
Dates first, meaning second. Get your own dates from the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, then come back and test the conditions below against your chart. If the idea of a Mahadasha is new, start with what a Mahadasha is. Nothing here is a guarantee or a forecast.
Eighteen years of 120: the arithmetic
BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 12-14 gives the Vimshottari order counted from the nakshatra Krittika: Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus. Sl. 15 gives the lengths in the same order: 6, 10, 7, 18, 16, 19, 17, 7 and 20 years, which total 120. Rahu is the fourth lord in that list, between Mars and Jupiter, and its eighteen years are 15 percent of the cycle. This app's engine stores the same ring in astrologyEngine.js, written from Ketu, and takes a year as 365.2425 days, so a full Rahu Mahadasha is about 6,574 days.
Which lord starts your cycle depends on the Moon's nakshatra at birth. The engine divides the zodiac into 27 nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes each, takes the index of the Moon's nakshatra and reads its remainder after division by nine. The remainder that points to Rahu belongs to three nakshatras: Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha. This matches the BPHS count: Rahu is fourth from Krittika, and the fourth nakshatra from Krittika is Ardra. If your Moon is in one of these three, you were born in Rahu Mahadasha. The nakshatra calculator tells you which nakshatra your Moon is in, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains the difference between the two.
A person born in Rahu's period does not get all eighteen years. Ch. 46 Sl. 16 gives the rule: multiply the Dasha length by the portion of the nakshatra the Moon has already crossed, divide by the whole nakshatra, and that is the expired part; the rest is the balance at birth. The engine does exactly this: it measures the Moon's fractional progress through its nakshatra and multiplies the first period by one minus that fraction. A Moon one third of the way through Swati leaves twelve years of Rahu; a Moon at the very end of Swati leaves almost none.
When the Rahu Mahadasha arrives
For everyone else, Rahu follows Mars. The age at which it begins depends on the starting lord and on how much of that first period was already spent at birth. The table gives the range for each starting lord, derived from the Sl. 15 lengths: the later age applies when the Moon was at the very start of its nakshatra, the earlier age when it was at the very end.
| Mahadasha at birth | Periods before Rahu | Rahu begins at about age | Rahu ends at about age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rahu | none (balance of Rahu only) | birth | 0 to 18 |
| Mars | Mars | 0 to 7 | 18 to 25 |
| Moon | Moon, Mars | 7 to 17 | 25 to 35 |
| Sun | Sun, Moon, Mars | 17 to 23 | 35 to 41 |
| Venus | Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars | 23 to 43 | 41 to 61 |
| Ketu | Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars | 43 to 50 | 61 to 68 |
| Mercury | Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars | 50 to 67 | 68 to 85 |
| Saturn | Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars | 67 to 86 | 85 to 104 |
| Jupiter | all eight other lords | 86 to 102 | 104 to 120 |
Rahu Mahadasha is therefore not a fixed life stage: for a Mars-born or Moon-born person it covers childhood and schooling, for a Sun-born or Venus-born person the working years, and for a Ketu-born or Mercury-born person it comes late. Anyone born in Jupiter's or Saturn's period will rarely reach it at all.
What BPHS says: Chapter 47
Ch. 47 opens with a distinction worth keeping in view for the rest of this page. Sl. 2 says the effects of a Dasha are of two kinds, general and distinctive: the general come from the natural characteristics of the graha, the distinctive from its placement. Sl. 3-4 add that the effects are 'in accordance with their strength'. Sl. 5-6 then give the basic test: favourable if at the commencement of the Dasha the lord is in the Lagna, in exaltation, in its own sign or a friendly sign; unfavourable if it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, in debilitation or in an inimical sign.
Rahu's signs, as the text gives them (Sl. 34-39)
Before describing Rahu's Dasha, Parashara stops to give the nodes a dignity scheme, because a test built on exaltation and own sign needs one. The translation gives: Rahu exalted in Taurus, Ketu exalted in Scorpio; their Multrikonas in Gemini and Sagittarius; their own signs Aquarius and Scorpio. It then records a second opinion: 'some sages' hold that Virgo is Rahu's own sign and Pisces is Ketu's. So the primary source itself reports a disagreement about Rahu's own sign.
A gap in the passage
The sloka announces that it will give the exaltation and debilitation signs of the nodes, but the translation in this corpus names only the exaltation, Multrikon and own signs. It does not state a debilitation sign for Rahu. This page does not fill that in. Where Sl. 40-43 below speak of Rahu 'in his debilitation Rasi', the text relies on a sign it has not named in this passage.
The favourable description (Sl. 34-39)
If Rahu is in its exaltation sign 'etc.' (that is, the dignities just listed), the text says the Dasha brings great happiness from acquisition of wealth and agricultural produce, conveyances obtained with the help of friends and government, construction of a new house, birth of children, religious inclination, 'recognition from Government of foreign countries', and gains of wealth and clothing.
A second favourable condition follows in the same slokas. If Rahu is associated with or aspected by benefics, is in a benefic sign, and is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 11th or 3rd house, the Dasha gives 'all kinds of comforts by the beneficence of the Government', acquisition of wealth through a foreign government or sovereign, and felicity at home. Note that this condition has three parts joined by 'and': benefic influence, a benefic sign, and one of six named houses.
The unfavourable description (Sl. 40-43)
If Rahu is in the 8th or 12th house, the text says there will be 'all kinds of troubles and distress' during its Dasha. If Rahu is associated with a malefic or with a Marak graha, or is in its debilitation sign, the list is: loss of position, destruction of the residential house, mental agony, trouble to wife and children, and 'misfortune of getting bad food'. The page reports this as the text's wording for one set of placements, not as a description of every Rahu period.
Three phases, and why Rahu runs backwards
Sl. 40-43 end with a sequence: loss of wealth at the commencement of the Dasha, 'some relief and gain of wealth in his own country' in between, and 'distress and anxieties during the last portion'. So even the unfavourable Rahu Dasha is not described as eighteen uniform years; the text puts a better stretch in the middle.
Sl. 3-4 give a separate timing rule that applies to every graha. A graha in the first Dreshkan (the first ten degrees of its sign) gives its effects at the commencement of the Dasha, one in the second Dreshkan in the middle, and one in the third at the end. A retrograde graha reverses this. The sloka then says of the nodes specifically that Rahu and Ketu, 'who are always retrograde', will always give their effects in the reverse order. For Rahu, then: in the first ten degrees of its sign, the effects are read as concentrating at the end of the eighteen years; in the last ten degrees, at the beginning; the middle Dreshkan stays in the middle.
The house Rahu occupies: where the sources agree and where they do not
Because Rahu rules no sign in the usual scheme, its house matters more than for any other Dasha lord. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 states the principle: Rahu and Ketu give 'predominantly the effects' of the Bhava lord they are joined with, or of the Bhava they occupy. Each of Rahu's twelve placements has its own page: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. What follows is only what the Dasha chapters say about house.
| Rahu's house | What BPHS says about its Dasha | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Named in the favourable list (with benefic influence and a benefic sign); also named among Maraka placements | Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39; Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 |
| 3rd | Favourable list; named as good for Rahu's own sub-period; Rahu and Ketu 'give favourable results' here | Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39; Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4; Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 |
| 4th | Favourable list, on the three-part condition | Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 |
| 6th | Favourable by two passages; 'difficulties in his Dasha periods' by a third unless a benefic joins or aspects | Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20; Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4; Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 |
| 7th | Favourable list; also a Maraka placement, with 'distress and diseases' in Rahu's own sub-period | Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39; Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24; Ch. 55 Sl. 7 |
| 8th | 'All kinds of troubles and distress'; difficulties unless a benefic joins or aspects | Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43; Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 |
| 10th | Favourable list; named as good for Rahu's own sub-period | Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39; Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4 |
| 11th | Favourable list; good for Rahu's own sub-period; Rahu and Ketu favourable here | Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39; Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4; Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 |
| 12th | 'All kinds of troubles and distress'; difficulties unless a benefic joins or aspects | Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43; Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 |
| 2nd | 'Distress and diseases' in Rahu's own sub-period | Ch. 55 Sl. 7 |
| 5th, 9th | Not named in the Rahu Dasha passages | - |
Three points in that table deserve a plain statement. The 6th house is contested inside one book: Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 says the Dashas of grahas placed in the 3rd, 6th and 11th are unfavourable and then adds, in parentheses, that Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in those three houses; Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4 names the 6th among the good houses for Rahu's own sub-period; yet Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 lists the 6th with the 8th and 12th as giving difficulties. The same Ch. 44 passage supplies the release: Rahu 'will not, however, do so' if it is joined or aspected by a benefic.
The 1st and 7th are also double-listed, as good houses in Ch. 47 and as Maraka placements in Ch. 44. Maraka is the text's category for longevity reckoning; this app does not calculate or state lifespan, and this page mentions the category only so the table is complete. And the unfavourable Dasha passage itself (Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43) names only the 8th and 12th, not the 6th.
The planet Rahu sits with
The other half of Ch. 34 Sl. 16 is association. Rahu joined with a house lord takes on that lord's effects, and Sl. 17 adds that Rahu or Ketu in a Kendra, joined with or aspected by the lord of a trine or a Kendra, 'will become Yog Karak'. Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4 uses the same idea, naming Rahu joined with a Yog Karak graha as a favourable condition. Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 gives the reverse: association with a malefic or a Marak graha is on the unfavourable side. So the practical question for a Rahu Mahadasha is less 'what is Rahu like' than 'whose house is Rahu in, and who is with it'. What a yoga in your chart means covers the Yoga Karaka idea.
The nine antardashas of the Rahu Mahadasha
Each Mahadasha divides into nine antardashas, starting with the Mahadasha lord's own and continuing in the cycle order. The engine's subdivideVimshottari() splits the parent span among the nine lords in proportion to their Vimshottari years, so each sub-lord gets 18 times its own years divided by 120. The same function produces the third level, and antardasha and pratyantar explains the levels in detail.
| Order | Antardasha | Share of 18 years | Traditional reckoning | BPHS Ch. 55 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rahu | 2.70 years | 2y 8m 12d | Sl. 1-7 |
| 2 | Jupiter | 2.40 years | 2y 4m 24d | Sl. 8-20 |
| 3 | Saturn | 2.85 years | 2y 10m 6d | Sl. 21-29 |
| 4 | Mercury | 2.55 years | 2y 6m 18d | Sl. 30-39 |
| 5 | Ketu | 1.05 years | 1y 0m 18d | Sl. 40-45 |
| 6 | Venus | 3.00 years | 3y 0m 0d | Sl. 46-59 |
| 7 | Sun | 0.90 years | 0y 10m 24d | Sl. 60-67 |
| 8 | Moon | 1.50 years | 1y 6m 0d | Sl. 68-75 |
| 9 | Mars | 1.05 years | 1y 0m 18d | Sl. 76-83 |
If you were born in Rahu Mahadasha, the engine shortens the Mahadasha to its balance and then divides that shorter span among all nine sub-lords in the same proportions. Its antardasha dates for a birth-time Rahu period are therefore compressed versions of the table, not the table with the early rows removed. This is how the code behaves; it is stated here so that the calculator's output does not surprise you.
Ch. 55 treats each sub-period in the same pattern: a favourable list under stated conditions, an unfavourable list under the opposite conditions, a test based on where the sub-lord sits counted from Rahu ('the Lord of the Dasha'), and a closing caution with a remedial measure. This page reports the first three. It does not reproduce the remedies, because this app does not prescribe them, or the closing lines about the sub-lord owning the 2nd or 7th house, which belong to the longevity material this app leaves out.
Rahu-Rahu (Sl. 1-7)
The opening sub-period is favourable, the text says, if Rahu is in Cancer, Scorpio, Virgo or Sagittarius and is in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house, or is joined with a Yog Karak graha in its exaltation sign: enthusiasm, cordial relations with authority, happiness from spouse and children, increase in property. It is unfavourable if Rahu is in the 8th or 12th or associated with malefics: danger from thieves, antagonism with officials, distress to family. Note that the four signs named here are not the dignity signs of Ch. 47; Virgo is the 'some sages' own sign, and Scorpio appears here as a good sign for Rahu.
Rahu-Jupiter (Sl. 8-20)
This is the longest favourable list in the chapter. If Jupiter is exalted, in its own sign, in its own or exalted Navamsa, or in a Kendra or trine from the Lagna, the text gives gain of position, patience, destruction of foes, wealth that grows 'like the growth of Candr of the bright half of the month', success in desired ventures, return to one's homeland, and visits to holy places. If Jupiter is debilitated, combust, in an enemy sign, in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or with malefics: loss of wealth, obstacles in work, defamation. Counted from Rahu, Jupiter in a Kendra, trine, the 11th, 2nd or 3rd and strong gives gains of land and inclination to charitable work; in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Rahu, loss of wealth and bodily distress. The next Mahadasha belongs to this sub-lord: see Jupiter Mahadasha.
Rahu-Saturn (Sl. 21-29)
The favourable list here is itself mixed. With Saturn in a Kendra, a trine, exaltation, own sign, Multrikon, the 3rd or the 11th, the text gives favour for devoted service, auspicious functions such as marriage at home, construction of a garden or reservoir, and gains of wealth and cattle, but in the same breath 'reduction in income, due to lethargy' and a loss on a westward journey. With Saturn debilitated, in an enemy sign, or in the 8th or 12th: danger from subordinates, authority and opponents, and disputes with co-owners, 'but sudden gain of ornaments'. Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Rahu brings defamation, quarrels, foreign journeys and sorrows. Saturn Mahadasha covers that graha as a period lord in its own right.
Rahu-Mercury (Sl. 30-39)
If Mercury is exalted, in a Kendra or in the 5th, and strong, the text uses the words 'Raj Yog': well-being in the family, profit in business, conveyances, marriage and other auspicious functions. Mercury in a Kendra, the 11th, 3rd, 9th or 10th from Rahu gives sound health, fulfilment of a wished-for aim, religious inclination and 'sympathetic attitude towards others'. Mercury in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or aspected by Saturn, gives loss of fortune, 'speaking lies, unwise actions', quarrels and fear from thieves and government. See Mercury Mahadasha.
Rahu-Ketu (Sl. 40-45)
This is the only sub-period whose opening statement is unconditional: journeys to foreign countries, danger from authority, rheumatic fever and loss of cattle (a classical health association, reported as the text's wording and not as medical advice). Conditions then modify it. Ketu associated with or aspected by benefics gives enjoyment, gain of wealth and recognition; Ketu related to the Lagna lord gives fulfilment of aims and, if actually joined with that lord, 'definitely' gain of wealth; Ketu in a Kendra or trine gives increase. Ketu without strength in the 8th or 12th gives distress, separation from parents and mental agony. Because Ketu is always opposite Rahu, it is always in the 7th from the Dasha lord. Ketu Mahadasha and Ketu in Vedic astrology take the south node further.
Rahu-Venus (Sl. 46-59)
The longest sub-period, three years. Venus strong in a Kendra, a trine or the 11th: gains of wealth, celebrations for a birth, recognition from government, a high position, 'great enjoyment and comforts'. Venus exalted, in its own sign, or in its own or exalted Navamsa: a new house, happiness from spouse and children, association with friends, 'extraordinary profits in business'. Venus in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated, in an enemy sign, or joined with Saturn, Mars or Rahu: diseases, quarrels, separation from son or father, disputes with co-owners. From Rahu, Venus in a Kendra, trine, 11th or 10th gives a desired object; with malefics in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Rahu the text lists ailments, coarse food and loss through penalties or fines. See Venus Mahadasha.
Rahu-Sun, Rahu-Moon, Rahu-Mars (Sl. 60-83)
- Sun (Sl. 60-67): exalted, in own sign, in the 11th, a Kendra or trine, or in own or exalted Navamsa, the Sun gives cordial relations with authority, increase in wealth and grains, and 'some popularity/respect'; the qualifier 'some' is the text's. Joined with or aspected by the lord of the 1st, 2nd or 10th: good reputation, help from government, foreign journeys, fulfilment of ambitions. Debilitated, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Rahu: fevers, quarrels, antagonism with authority, travels. In a Kendra, trine, 3rd or 11th from Rahu: 'well-being in every way and recognition from kings in foreign countries'. See Sun Mahadasha.
- Moon (Sl. 68-75): exalted, in own sign, in a Kendra, trine or the 11th, or in a friendly sign aspected by benefics, the Moon gives respect, gains of wealth, sound health, happiness from children and increase in house and land. In the 5th, 9th, a Kendra or the 11th from Rahu: all-round success and good reputation. Without strength in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Rahu: disturbances at home and in agricultural work, danger from thieves on journeys, stomach disorders. See Moon Mahadasha.
- Mars (Sl. 76-83): in the 11th, 5th, 9th or a Kendra, aspected by benefics, exalted or in own sign, Mars gives recovery of lost wealth and position, increase in agricultural production, happiness from children. In a Kendra, 5th, 9th, 3rd or 11th from Rahu: journeys, audience with authority, a commanding position, enthusiasm, gain through kinsmen. In the 6th, 8th or 12th from Rahu and aspected by malefics: distress to family and siblings, loss of position, wounds. Mars both precedes Rahu as a Mahadasha and closes it as a sub-period; see Mars Mahadasha.
The pattern underneath
Read the nine sections side by side and the same three tests repeat. One: the sub-lord's own dignity and house from the Lagna (exaltation, own sign, Kendra, trine and 11th on one side; debilitation, enemy sign and the 6th, 8th, 12th on the other). Two: the sub-lord's Navamsa dignity, stated explicitly for Jupiter, Venus and the Sun. Three: the sub-lord's house counted from Rahu, where a Kendra, trine, the 3rd or the 11th is good and the 6th, 8th or 12th is not. The chapter is a set of conditional statements about the sub-lord, not a verdict on Rahu.
A modern casebook view, and how far to trust it
Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II is a modern (2000) compilation of case studies and rules of thumb. Its statements about Rahu's periods are more sweeping than Parashara's and should be read as a modern author's working opinions.
- Item 9 of its dasa rules (p. 123) quotes R. Santhanam that the pairs Saturn-Rahu, Rahu-Saturn, Jupiter-Rahu, Rahu-Mercury, Mercury-Rahu and Rahu-Mars 'introduce severe set backs in professional spheres', and that Rahu-Jupiter and Mars-Rahu do not. The author then disagrees with his own source and calls those two 'equally malefic'. Two modern writers, two lists.
- Item 10 and a later paragraph call Rahu-Mercury 'very detrimental for married life', citing Bhavartha Ratnakara for the idea that with Rahu and Mercury together in the 3rd, Rahu's dasa makes a person 'more impatient and fickle minded'. Compare BPHS Ch. 55 Sl. 30-33, which gives Raj Yog, marriage and family well-being for the same sub-period when Mercury is strong. The two sources disagree, and the older one attaches conditions the newer one drops.
- Item 14 (p. 124) repeats, via Santhanam, that Rahu in the 8th or 12th 'is a liability', which agrees with BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43. It adds that Rahu's dasa is 'generally' bad for those born with the Moon in Ashwini, Magha or Mula, the three Ketu-ruled nakshatras, for whom Rahu is the sixth Mahadasha.
- In a case study of a novelist, the author remarks that 'generally Rahu Mahadasa interferes heavily with one's education in infant days', then shows a chart where it did the opposite because Rahu was aspected by the 5th lord from its own sign.
Even the book that makes the broadest claims about Rahu overrides them the moment it looks at an actual chart. The blanket statements cannot be tested against anything; the conditional ones in BPHS can.
How this app reads a Rahu Mahadasha
The dasha reading shown on the Kundali and Timing pages comes from buildDashaLordEffects() in kundaliEngine.js, which codes the Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 test. For Rahu the function behaves differently from the seven classical grahas, and it is better to say so plainly than to let the output imply more than it computes.
- No dignity for Rahu. The engine's dignity table holds the seven classical grahas only. Rahu has no entry, so the dignity step returns 'Neutral' for Rahu in every sign. The Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 scheme (Taurus, Gemini, Aquarius, with Virgo as a variant) is not coded, precisely because the text itself reports two opinions.
- Favourable only in the Lagna. The verdict is favourable when the lord has strong dignity or is in the 1st house, and is not in the 6th, 8th or 12th. With dignity always neutral, the only route to 'favourable' for Rahu is the 1st house. Every other house produces the 'testing' wording.
- Three-tier quality. dashaQuality() returns 'challenging' if Rahu is in the 6th, 8th or 12th and 'neutral' in every other house. It never returns 'good' for Rahu, because that tier requires exaltation, Moolatrikona or own sign.
- No house lordships. The Ch. 48 house-lord themes are listed for the houses a Dasha lord rules. Rahu and Ketu own no sign in the engine's table, so this list is empty for them.
- The wording. A favourable result reads: Rahu is neutral in its sign and house, 'classically read as a favourable placement for this Mahadasha', tending toward 'unconventional gains, ambition realised through foreign or unfamiliar channels, and material advancement'. A testing result says 'classically read as a more testing placement', tending toward 'instability, anxiety and outcomes that don't match the effort put in'. The phrase 'classically read as' marks the claim as the tradition's, not a prediction by this app.
What the engine does not do for Rahu
It does not apply the benefic-association condition of Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39, the Ch. 48 exception that makes the 3rd, 6th and 11th good houses for Rahu, the Yog Karak rule of Ch. 34 Sl. 17, the Ch. 55 sub-period conditions, Navamsa dignity, or the reversed Dreshkan timing. A Rahu in the 10th or 11th with a benefic, which BPHS reads well, will still show the 'testing' sentence, and a Rahu in the 6th will show 'challenging' although two BPHS passages favour it. Treat the app's Rahu verdict as the bare Sl. 5-6 house test and use this page to check the rest by hand. The dates, by contrast, are fully computed for all three levels. Positions are calculated as described on the methodology page; Rahu is the mean node there, and Ketu is placed exactly 180 degrees from it. The texts are listed under sources.
Checking a Rahu Mahadasha in your own chart
- Get the dates. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator returns the full timeline, the period running today and its nine antardashas. It needs the date of birth; a birth time sharpens the Moon's position and therefore every boundary. Note your age at the start and end and compare with the table above.
- Find Rahu's house and sign on the birth chart. Houses need a birth time and place. Sort the house using the table: 8th or 12th on one side; 3rd, 10th, 11th on the other; 6th, 1st and 7th as the contested ones.
- See who is with Rahu and who aspects it. A benefic joined or aspecting meets one part of the Ch. 47 favourable condition and, by Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24, lifts the difficulty of a 6th, 8th or 12th placement. A malefic companion is on the Sl. 40-43 side.
- Read Rahu's degree. In the first ten degrees of its sign, the reversed Dreshkan rule of Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 puts the weight at the end of the eighteen years; in the last ten degrees, at the beginning.
- Count houses from Rahu to each of the other eight grahas. Mark those in a Kendra, trine, 3rd or 11th from Rahu and those in the 6th, 8th or 12th from it. This single pass sorts the sub-periods the way Ch. 55 does. Ketu will always be in the 7th.
- For Jupiter, Venus and the Sun, check the Navamsa as well, since Ch. 55 names own or exalted Navamsa for each. The Navamsa calculator gives the D9 positions, and Navamsa, the second chart explains how to read them.
- Look at the sky now. The gochar calculator shows where the nine grahas, Rahu included, are transiting counted from your natal Moon. Dasha and transit are separate layers: the dasha says whose period it is, the transit says where that graha is at present.
Two related checks are worth keeping apart from this one. The Kaal Sarp calculator tests whether all seven grahas lie on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis; that is a statement about the natal chart's shape, not about any period, and Kaal Sarp Dosha explained sets out what is and is not known about it. And if you would sooner ask about your own dates in plain language, the AI chat answers from the same computed chart and dasha data.
Common misreadings
- 'Rahu Mahadasha is eighteen bad years.' The primary text gives a favourable Rahu Dasha before the unfavourable one (Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39), and even its unfavourable version has relief and gain in the middle (Sl. 40-43).
- 'Rahu in the 6th is as bad as the 8th or 12th.' Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 and Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4 put the 6th on the favourable side for Rahu; only Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 groups it with the other two, and that passage carries its own benefic exception.
- 'Rahu's debilitation sign is settled.' The passage that gives Rahu's dignities reports two views on its own sign and, in this translation, never names the debilitation sign. This app's engine assigns Rahu no dignity at all for that reason.
Before and after: the neighbours
Rahu's period is entered from Mars Mahadasha (7 years) and left for Jupiter Mahadasha (16 years). A change of Mahadasha is a change of which graha's placement is being read; the texts used here do not describe it as a crisis in itself.
Questions people ask
- How long is Rahu Mahadasha?
- Eighteen years in the Vimshottari system, by BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15. If you were born during it, you get only the balance left at birth, which depends on how far the Moon had moved through Ardra, Swati or Shatabhisha (Ch. 46 Sl. 16).
- Which birth nakshatras begin life in Rahu Mahadasha?
- Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha. For every other birth nakshatra Rahu's period follows Mars's, at an age set by the starting lord.
- Is Rahu Mahadasha good or bad?
- The text does not answer that in general. Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 describes a favourable Rahu Dasha when Rahu is in the signs it names, or is with benefics in a benefic sign in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 10th or 11th house. Sl. 40-43 describes an unfavourable one when Rahu is in the 8th or 12th, with a malefic, or debilitated. Your chart decides which description applies.
- Where is Rahu exalted?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 gives Taurus as Rahu's exaltation sign, Gemini as its Multrikon and Aquarius as its own sign, and records that some sages take Virgo as its own sign instead. This app's engine does not score Rahu's dignity, because the source itself reports more than one opinion.
- Why does this app call my Rahu period 'testing' even though Rahu is in my 10th or 11th house?
- Because the engine applies only the basic Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 test and gives Rahu no dignity. For Rahu that makes the 1st house the only 'favourable' placement. The fuller BPHS conditions that favour the 3rd, 10th and 11th houses and benefic association are set out on this page for you to check by hand; they are not in the app's sentence.
- Does this page suggest remedies for a difficult Rahu Mahadasha?
- No. BPHS Ch. 55 closes each sub-period with a remedial measure, and this page deliberately leaves them out. This app does not prescribe remedies, gemstones, mantras or donations. It gives the dates and the sourced conditions so you can see what is being claimed and on what basis.
