Planet in house

Rahu in the 11th house of gains, checked line by line against the Bhrigu Sutras, Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani as quoted there, Saravali, BPHS's Dasha and Antardasha chapters and a modern casebook. What each says, the caveats they add, and why this app's favourable line never appears.

If any placement of Rahu has the classical sources on its side, it is the 11th. The Bhrigu Sutras, the two authorities it quotes, Saravali, a long run of BPHS Dasha chapters and a modern casebook all read it well, and the one passage in BPHS that names Rahu in the 11th unfavourably needs three other malefics in the same house. The readings are not free of caveats, though: one authority adds few children and ear trouble, and the opposite house, where Ketu always sits, has some of the harshest node lines in the books. This app's own favourable line for the house calls it one of Rahu's most auspicious placements, and yet the app never prints that line. This page sets out each source as it stands in the text, its conditions, and the reason. For the node in general, see Rahu in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 11th house (Labha Bhava).

Where these citations come from

Every classical line on this page was checked against the corpus text it is cited to: the Bhrigu Sutras (Part II Ch. 8, pp. 109-115), Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) by chapter and sloka, Saravali, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Uttara Kalamrita are not in the corpus; their lines are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. An earlier version of this page worked from paraphrases, and several of them were incomplete; the corrections are noted where they matter.

The house Rahu occupies here

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 12 gives the 11th: "All articles, son's wife, income, prosperity, quadrupeds etc." Later writers add friends and elder siblings; the house page notes that "the house of friends" is modern commentary. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara groups the 11th with the 3rd, 6th and 10th as an upachaya, a house of growth, and with the 2nd, 5th and 8th as a panapara. Unlike the 6th it is not also a trika house, so it carries no second label pulling against Rahu. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 lists Rahu among the malefics, and Sl. 30 describes it as smoky, windy in temperament and "intelligent".

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 sets the general rule for the nodes: they give predominantly the effects of the bhava lord they join, or of the bhava they occupy. The Yoga Karaka rule of Sl. 17 needs a node in a kendra and so does not apply to the 11th; the 11th works for Rahu by the upachaya route instead. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara states the same principle in its own words (p. 142, rule 10): because the nodes own no houses, they give results by position, association and the lord of the house they occupy.

The Bhrigu Sutras block for the 11th, in full

The Bhrigu Sutras give the nodes one chapter, Part II Ch. 8, and the translator opens it with a note that shapes everything below. The author gives the same effects for Rahu and for Ketu in each house, presumably because the two are always seventh from each other; "the other authorities" give separate effects. So the sutra for the 11th is shared, word for word, with Ketu in the 11th, and only the "Other Views" printed under it separate the two nodes. The same chapter notes, under the 1st house, that Brihat Jataka and Saravali do not deal with the nodes in the houses at all.

SourceRahu in the 11th, as printedShared with Ketu?

Phaladeepika, as quoted there (p. 114)Wealthy and long lived, but few children; ear troublesNo, Rahu only

Bhrigu Sutras Part II Ch. 8, corpus lines 4500-4509. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

All three voices agree on wealth, and that agreement is real. On children they do not agree. The shared sutra says the native is blessed with children and Chamatkar Chintamani speaks of happiness from them, while Phaladeepika gives few children. The earlier version of this page reported Phaladeepika as "wealthy" and stopped there; the full line also gives long life, few children and trouble with the ears. This app does not compute lifespan, and the ear line is a classical association, not medical advice. The sources do not say why children appear in an 11th-house reading at all; one possible thread is BPHS's own list for the house, which includes the son's wife, but no text draws that line and this page does not insist on it.

Chamatkar Chintamani uses the same idiom of non-Hindus in two neighbouring lines as well, Ketu in the 9th and Rahu in the 10th, and BPHS has a parallel idea in its own Dasha chapter: Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 speak of recognition from the government of foreign countries and wealth through a foreign government or sovereign in a well-placed Rahu period. Read as the texts give it, the theme is gain through people outside one's own circle. This page reports it as the text's idiom and does not apply it to any group of people.

The sutra on the other side of the axis

Because the Bhrigu Sutras give one reading for either node in a house, and because Rahu in the 11th always means Ketu in the 5th, one chart is described by two sutras at once. Sutras 29-30 give children and wealth for the 11th. Sutras 11-13, for a node in the 5th, read children very differently: no children or loss of children, with a ritual the text prescribes, windy diseases and trouble from the ruler. The two sutras describe the same pair of positions and pull opposite ways on the same subject. The text does not reconcile them. What it shows is that the children theme in the 11th-house reading is not a settled verdict even inside the book. The 5th-house side is set out on Ketu in the 5th house, and the reverse arrangement on Rahu in the 5th house. This app prescribes none of the rituals these sutras mention.

What the wider classical sources say

SourceWhat it says that touches Rahu in the 11th
Saravali Ch. 12 Sl. 3-5In the chapter on evils cancelled at birth: Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from the Ascendant, aspected by benefics, destroys all evils
Saravali Ch. 30No line for Rahu or Ketu in any house
BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20Dashas of grahas in the 3rd, 6th and 11th are unfavourable, then in brackets: "Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in Sahaj, Ari and Labh"
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39Rahu with or aspected by benefics, in a benefic sign, and in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 11th or 3rd: comforts by government favour, wealth through a foreign government, felicity at home
BPHS Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4Rahu's own sub-period good if Rahu is in Cancer, Scorpio, Virgo or Sagittarius and in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th
BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 11Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars together in the 11th: "cessation of his duties"
Chatterjee Vol. II p. 121, aphorism 8Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from Lagna or Moon: in its Dasha or Bhukti the native will acquire and enjoy all material wealth; more so with the aspect of a benefic or a kendra lord
Checked against saravali.txt lines 2080-2085 and 4608-5013, bphs.txt lines 1669, 5442-5454, 5573-5580 and 6583-6586, and advanced-predictive-astrology.txt lines 7729-7732.

Three of these needed correcting from the earlier version. Saravali's line sits in Ch. 12, the chapter on evils cancelled at birth; the line is that "all evils are destroyed", in a list of conditions that protect a newborn, not a general verdict on wealth. BPHS Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4 do not name the 11th alone: they need one of four signs as well as one of four houses, so only four rising signs can meet them from the 11th. And BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 attach three conditions together, benefic company, a benefic sign and the house, not the house with benefic association alone.

Saravali Ch. 30, Kalyana Varma's chapter on the planets in the twelve houses, has no line for Rahu or Ketu at all. That is the source's silence, and this page does not fill it. Saravali's only Rahu-in-the-11th statement is the Ch. 12 cancellation line, and the only other node-in-house line in that chapter, Sl. 10-11, concerns Rahu in the Ascendant in Aries, Taurus or Cancer.

The conditions are lighter here than anywhere else Rahu goes. Saravali and Chatterjee bring in a benefic aspect, Chatterjee also a kendra lord's, BPHS Ch. 47 benefic company and a benefic sign, Ch. 55 a sign; the shared sutra, Chamatkar Chintamani and the Ch. 48 exception state their result without a condition. Compare the 6th, where BPHS Ch. 44 adds a reservation, and the 3rd, where Phaladeepika adds friction with brothers. For the 11th, Phaladeepika's few children and the 5th-house sutra on the axis are the only lines that pull the other way, and neither is about wealth.

One BPHS combination to watch

BPHS Ch. 21, the 10th-house chapter, judges work and its return together, and its Sl. 11 reads: should Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars be in Labha Bhava, the native "will incur cessation of his duties". That needs four malefics in one house, which is rare, and it is the one passage in BPHS that names Rahu in the 11th unfavourably. It is a statement about a four-graha cluster, not about Rahu in the 11th alone. It fits the agent logic below: Rahu speaks for its companions, and here every companion is a malefic.

What BPHS says about a Rahu period from the 11th

The Dasha chapters are where BPHS speaks most about the 11th for Rahu, and nearly everything there is favourable. Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 give Rahu's dignities (exalted in Taurus, moolatrikona in Gemini, own sign Aquarius, with "some sages" giving Virgo) and then the good Dasha already quoted. Sl. 40-43 give the adverse side: Rahu in the 8th or 12th, or associated with a malefic or a Maraka graha, or debilitated, brings loss of position and mental agony, with loss at the start of the period, some relief and gain in one's own country in the middle, and anxiety at the end. The 11th is not among the adverse houses, but the malefic-company clause applies in any house.

Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 is the plainest support. The general rule there makes the Dashas of grahas in the 3rd, 6th and 11th unfavourable, and of grahas joined with the lords of those houses. The translator's bracket then exempts the nodes by name: "Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in Sahaj, Ari and Labh." The same chapter, Sl. 5-8, gives the Dasha of the 11th lord "obstacles in gains of wealth and the possibility of diseases". That rule matters for a lone Rahu, which by the agent rule may speak for that very lord; the texts do not say whether the node's exemption carries over to the lord it stands for.

Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time a Dasha by the decanate of its lord and reverse the order for the nodes: "The Dasha effects of Rahu and Ketu, who are always retrograde, will always be realized in the reverse order." A Rahu in the first ten degrees of its sign therefore delivers at the end of its eighteen years, one in the last ten at the start, and one in the middle third in the middle. Ch. 50 Sl. 51-52, in the chapter on the Chara and other rashi Dashas rather than Vimshottari, add that the natural significations of the house Rahu occupies are harmed at the start of the Dasha; for the 11th that would be income and gains. It belongs to a different Dasha system and this app does not apply it.

Rahu's sub-periods with the 11th named

The Antardasha chapters, Ch. 52 to 60, give conditions for Rahu's sub-period inside each Mahadasha. The rows below are only those that name the 11th, or the upachaya group it belongs to, as a good position. Several of these passages also prescribe worship or charity for the bad cases; this app does not prescribe them, and they are left out.

Mahadasha (BPHS chapter, slokas)Condition that covers the 11thWhat the text gives
Sun (Ch. 52 Sl. 23-26)Rahu in an upachaya from Lagna, or with a Yoga KarakaRecognition, good fortune, fame, birth of a son, with some distress to family
Moon (Ch. 53 Sl. 15-16)Rahu in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th, or aspected by beneficsSuccess in ventures, gains from the ruler "in the South-West direction"
Mars (Ch. 54 Sl. 9-10)Rahu in the 11th, 5th, 9th or a kendra, with beneficsRecognition from government, house and land, a son, profits in business
Rahu (Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4)Rahu in Cancer, Scorpio, Virgo or Sagittarius and in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11thA kingdom, cordial relations with the ruler, happiness from family, more property
Saturn (Ch. 57 Sl. 65-67)Rahu in a kendra or the 11th from Lagna or from SaturnGains at the start; cordiality with the ruler and friends in the middle
Mercury (Ch. 58 Sl. 51)Rahu in the 3rd, 8th, 10th or 11thA meeting with the ruler; with a benefic, a visit to a new ruler
Ketu (Ch. 59 Sl. 45-47)Rahu in a kendra, trikona, the 11th, 3rd or 2nd, or in exaltation, own or friend's signWealth, grains and land, after some trouble at the start
Venus (Ch. 60 Sl. 36-39)Rahu in a kendra, trikona or the 11th; and separately the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11thGains, friends, successful journeys; victory over enemies, good for about five months, fevers near the end
bphs.txt lines 6060-6068, 6226-6228, 6399-6403, 6583-6586, 7158-7162, 7331-7332, 7505-7508 and 7667-7675. The Jupiter Mahadasha passage (Ch. 56 Sl. 72-75) names kendras and trikonas but not the 11th.

Two patterns run through all of these. First, the adverse conditions are counted mostly from the Mahadasha lord, not from the Lagna: Rahu in the 8th or 12th from the lord of the Dasha, or with a malefic, spoils the sub-period in almost every chapter. A Rahu in the 11th from Lagna can still be 8th or 12th from a given Mahadasha lord, and then that chapter's adverse line applies to that one sub-period. Second, the 2nd and 7th are the "physical distress" houses for Rahu in nearly every chapter, and the 11th is never among them. Ch. 53 Sl. 19-21 also count the 11th from the Dasha lord, alongside kendras, trikonas and the 3rd, as a position for pilgrimage and charitable inclination; that is a second count, distinct from the Lagna one.

Rahu speaks for others: a good house with a difficult lord

The commentary that closes the Bhrigu Sutras chapter (pp. 114-115) reports "a strong school of thought" that the nodes own no signs and act as agents: first for the planet they are conjoined with; if none, for the planet that aspects them; only when neither, for the lord of the sign they occupy. In whole-sign houses the lord of an 11th-house Rahu's sign is the 11th lord, and BPHS treats that lord very differently from the house. A planet sitting in the 11th is welcomed almost everywhere in the text, but Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say any graha owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, and "in each group the significance will be in the ascending order", which puts the 11th lord last and worst of the three.

Ch. 22, the 11th-house chapter, judges gains entirely through the 11th lord. Gains come with the lord in the 11th, in a kendra or trikona, or exalted even when combust (Sl. 2); with the lord in the 2nd while the 2nd lord is in a kendra with Jupiter (Sl. 3); or with the lord joined to a benefic in a kendra or trikona (Sl. 5). Sl. 11 gives the reverse: "no gains in spite of numerous efforts" if the lord is in fall, combust, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th with a malefic. The app's testing line for Rahu in the 11th, gains that do not match the effort, uses the same idea; Ch. 22 attaches it to the 11th lord's condition, which the app does not check.

Chatterjee adds a modern test that uses the same lord. Among his aphorisms on good and bad periods (p. 125, aphorism 22), nodes placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositors give very bad results. For a Rahu in the 11th that happens when the 11th lord sits in the 6th house of the chart (the 11th is 6th from it), in the 4th (the 11th is 8th from it) or in the 12th (the 11th is 12th from it). His aphorism 13 (p. 124) adds that a planet in close company with Rahu or Ketu gives poor results in its own Dasha, the closer the worse. Both are one modern author's working rules, labelled as such.

  • The lord of Rahu's sign is the 11th lord, the planet of income. A strong 11th lord, placed as Ch. 22 Sl. 2, 3 or 5 describe, is the better backdrop for Ch. 34 Sl. 16.
  • A benefic joined with Rahu in the 11th meets the most conditions on this page at once: Saravali's, Chatterjee's and the company clause of Ch. 47.
  • A kendra lord aspecting Rahu meets Chatterjee's second condition and, in the Jupiter Mahadasha passage, Ch. 56 Sl. 72-75.
  • Malefic company is the other extreme; the Ch. 21 Sl. 11 cluster is its strongest form, and Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 make any malefic association adverse for the Dasha.
  • Ketu is always in the 5th and always aspects the 11th.

Uttara Kalamrita's rules, applied to the 11th

The same commentary summarises Uttara Kalamrita in three points. The first says the nodes, "if endowed with strength", produce effects like the planet owning the house they occupy or the planet they join; for the 11th that is again the 11th lord. The second and third make the nodes auspicious in a kendra or trikona, with a kendra or trikona lord, or in the 9th and 10th with a trikona lord. None of these names the 11th. So Uttara Kalamrita, as quoted, gives Rahu in the 11th no special standing of its own; what it can add is a conjunction with a kendra or trikona lord, which by its third point makes the node beneficial wherever it is.

Which sign: where the dignity schemes disagree

The sign an 11th-house Rahu occupies depends only on the rising sign, and several of the rules above turn on it. The authorities do not agree on Rahu's signs. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 exalt Rahu in Taurus, give Gemini as moolatrikona and Aquarius as own sign, with Virgo by "some sages". The Bhrigu Sutras (Part I, p. 13) report Uttara Kalamrita with Taurus exalted, Scorpio debilitated and Aquarius owned, and Sanketnidhi with Gemini exalted and Virgo owned. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 82-83) gives Rahu Capricorn as its own sign, exaltation in Taurus and Gemini, and debilitation in Scorpio and Sagittarius.

Whole-sign arithmetic: the 11th sign from each Lagna. Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4 is Rahu's own sub-period; Ch. 57 Sl. 68 and Ch. 58 Sl. 47 are Rahu's sub-periods in the Saturn and Mercury Mahadashas. This app applies none of these dignities.

The table shows how much the schemes cross each other. Capricorn rising puts Rahu in Scorpio: debilitated by Uttara Kalamrita and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, yet one of the four signs BPHS Ch. 55 asks for a good Rahu sub-period. Aquarius rising puts it in Sagittarius, debilitated for Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara and favoured by two BPHS sub-period passages. Pisces rising puts it in Capricorn, an own sign only in Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary ends this debate a different way, by the school that gives the nodes no signs at all, and this app follows that school.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara also gives Rahu aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from itself. This app, following BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5, gives the nodes the 7th aspect only. For an 11th-house Rahu the difference is concrete: under Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara Rahu would also aspect the 1st house, the Lagna itself (3rd from the 11th), and the 8th (10th from the 11th). The book adds that a well-placed Rahu "will bestow power and material success", and on p. 118 names Rahu the karaka for maternal relations. None of that changes what this app computes; it is reported so a reader can see where another standard text would draw the chart differently.

Ketu in the 5th and the single aspect

This app gives Rahu the 7th aspect only, following BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5, which reserve special aspects for Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. From the 11th it lands on the 5th, children and learning, where Ketu always is. Both nodes count as malefics in BPHS Ch. 3, so a graha in the 5th or 11th is aspected by both, which lowers its aspect score in the Shad Bala calculator and rules a benefic there out of Adhi and Amala Yoga in the yogas calculator. Counted the other way, an 11th-house Rahu is aspected by anything in the 5th with Ketu, by Mars from the 4th or 8th house of the chart, by Jupiter from the 3rd or 7th, and by Saturn from the 2nd or 9th.

A modern casebook on the 11th

S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (2000) is a modern book, and its rules are one author's distillation, often citing magazine articles. Three of its passages touch Rahu in the 11th. Aphorism 8 on p. 121, quoted in the table above, is the clearest: Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from Lagna or Moon brings material wealth in its Dasha or Bhukti, more so with a benefic or kendra lord aspecting it. On p. 112, discussing one of his example charts (chart 37), he attributes large sums of money to a Rahu Dasha with Rahu "placed in 11th from Janma Lagna", while the same chart's foreign-travel troubles are put down to other factors. One case is an illustration, not evidence for a rule.

For transits (pp. 317-318), he writes that Rahu "produces good results" when it comes to the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th from the Moon, Sun or Ascendant, and that the nodes give bad results while passing over the houses they aspect natally or the signs they occupied at birth. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon only and marks the 11th from the Moon as a good position for natural malefics, Rahu included, described as gains through direct effort. Chatterjee's aphorism 8 also counts the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon for the natal reading, so the Moon count is worth making twice: once for the birth chart, once for transits.

How this app reads Rahu in the 11th

The engine returns Neutral for Rahu's dignity in every sign, and its favourable planet-in-house line needs an exalted, moolatrikona, own or friendly sign. So on the Kundali page Rahu in the 11th gets the testing line: "gains that don't match the effort under real affliction". The favourable line written for the house reads "real, substantial gains and children - Rahu does well as a natural malefic in this upachaya house, one of its most auspicious placements". It agrees with the shared sutra and with Chamatkar Chintamani, it leaves out Phaladeepika's few children, and no chart can reach it.

The Mahadasha line applies BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, which pass a Dasha lord in the Lagna, in exaltation, or in an own or friendly sign. With no dignity for Rahu, that test passes only for a Rahu in the 1st, so in the 11th the line reads testing and the quality label neutral. The Ch. 48 bracket, the strongest single line for this placement, is not coded. The rahu-mahadasha page names this as the plainest gap: a Rahu in the 10th or 11th with a benefic, which BPHS reads well, still shows the testing sentence. Career and Money adds Rahu to its risk-appetite reading at a fixed weight for the 11th, as for the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 12th.

Timing: the Mahadasha and the transit

For Rahu's 18-year Vimshottari period, the 11th stands with the 3rd as the strongest position in the BPHS Dasha chapters. Dates come from the Vimshottari Dasha calculator; the sub-periods are on the Rahu Mahadasha page. Remember the reversal of Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 when reading which part of the period carries the 11th-house results.

A worked chart

We ran the engine for 10 March 1995, 01:50 IST, New Delhi. Sagittarius rises at 2.19 degrees, so Libra is the 11th. Rahu is at 14.39 Libra in Swati pada 3, in the 11th house, with no planet beside it; Ketu is at 14.39 Aries in Bharani, in the 5th. Rahu's dispositor Venus, lord of the 6th and 11th for Sagittarius rising, is at 14.37 Capricorn in the 2nd with Mercury. Mars, retrograde and debilitated at 20.77 Cancer in the 8th, aspects the 11th by its special 4th-house aspect. The Moon is at 29.57 Taurus, exalted, in the 6th; the Sun and an own-sign, combust Saturn are in Aquarius in the 3rd; Jupiter is in Scorpio in the 12th.

  • Placement line: Neutral, favourable false, the 11th-house testing sentence.
  • Mahadasha line: testing; quality neutral.
  • Dates: a Mars balance to 29 November 1998, then Rahu's Mahadasha to 28 November 2016.
  • Career and Money: Rahu on the money axis, at the fixed weight. Kaal Sarp: not present.

Checked by hand against the sources. The house meets the shared sutra, both quoted authorities' wealth lines and the Ch. 48 bracket. Counted from the Moon in Taurus, Rahu in Libra is the 6th, so Chatterjee's second count is met as well as his first. Libra is not one of the four signs of Ch. 55 Sl. 1-4, so Rahu's own sub-period does not meet that passage. Libra is Venus's sign, which may count as the benefic sign of Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39, but the benefic company that passage also asks for is absent: Mars and Ketu are the only influences on Rahu, so Saravali's condition is not met either. Mars is a malefic aspecting Rahu, which is the kind of association Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 read as adverse, though far from the four-graha cluster of Ch. 21 Sl. 11.

By the agent rule Rahu, joined by nothing, acts first for Mars, its aspecting planet, which for Sagittarius rising rules the 5th and 12th. Only after that does it stand for its dispositor Venus. Venus is in the 2nd, a house of wealth, neither a kendra nor a trika house; Rahu in Libra is 10th from it, so Chatterjee's aphorism 22 is not triggered. For Sagittarius rising Venus rules both the 6th and the 11th, two of the three lordships Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 count as evil. Ch. 22 Sl. 3, the 11th lord in the 2nd, also wants the 2nd lord in a kendra with Jupiter; the 2nd lord, Saturn, is in the 3rd, so it is not met. Rahu at 14.39 degrees is in the middle third of Libra, so by Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 its results fall in the middle of the period, reversal or not. The Moon at 29.57 degrees is half a degree from Gemini; a small change in time would move it, and with it the Moon count.

Checking Rahu in your own 11th house

  1. Cast the chart in the birth chart calculator with an exact time and confirm Rahu's house.
  2. Note any planet joining Rahu, then any planet aspecting it; by the agent rule these come before the 11th lord.
  3. Note any benefic or kendra lord among them. That is the one condition several sources share.
  4. Note whether the Sun, Saturn and Mars all join Rahu in the 11th; that is the Ch. 21 Sl. 11 cluster.
  5. Find the 11th lord, Rahu's dispositor, and test it against BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 2, 3, 5 and 11.
  6. Look up Rahu's sign in the table above, to see which dignity scheme and which sub-period passages it meets.
  7. Count Rahu from the Moon as well, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
Is Rahu in the 11th house good?
On wealth, every source checked here reads it well, with Saravali, BPHS Ch. 47 and Chatterjee adding a benefic aspect or company as the condition. On children the sources split: the shared Bhrigu sutra and Chamatkar Chintamani are kind, Phaladeepika gives few children.
Why does the app show a testing line?
Its favourable line needs a dignity the engine never assigns to Rahu, so it can never be printed. The Rahu Mahadasha page names the 10th and 11th as the plainest cases of this gap.
What is the Ch. 48 exception?
BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 say the Dashas of grahas in the 3rd, 6th and 11th prove unfavourable, then add in brackets that Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in Sahaj, Ari and Labh.
Is there any unfavourable line for Rahu in the 11th?
In BPHS only Ch. 21 Sl. 11, which needs Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars together in the 11th. Phaladeepika's line, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, adds few children and ear troubles to its wealth.
Does the Bhrigu Sutra for the 11th apply to Ketu too?
Yes. The Bhrigu Sutras give one set of sutras for both nodes in each house; only the Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines printed under them are separate for Rahu and Ketu.
Is Rahu exalted in my 11th house?
It depends on the scheme. Cancer rising puts Rahu in Taurus, exalted for BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara; Leo rising puts it in Gemini, moolatrikona for BPHS and exalted for Sanketnidhi. This app assigns Rahu no dignity at all.
What does Ketu in the 5th add?
It is always opposite and aspects the 11th, and the Bhrigu sutra for a node in the 5th reads children unfavourably. See Ketu in the 5th house.
How does the 11th compare with the 3rd?
They are the two cleanest houses for Rahu in these sources, both in the Ch. 48 bracket and in Saravali's Ch. 12 line. See Rahu in the 3rd house.
