Ketu in the 5th house from the books themselves: the shared Bhrigu sutra, the separate Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines, BPHS's Lajjit state, the Karakamsa line often confused with this placement, the Dasha and Antardasha conditions for a Ketu in a trine, and how this app reads it.

A Ketu in the 5th house sits in a trine, one of the two houses BPHS treats as the most fortunate in a chart, and in the house of children, learning and judgement. That double character runs through the sources. The rules that favour nodes in trines apply here, while the house lines written for Ketu are mixed to poor, and BPHS has a separate rule, the Lajjit or "ashamed" state, that is triggered by a node in this house. The best-known line linking Ketu with learning is not about this house at all.

This page describes rules, not a person. See also Ketu in Vedic astrology, the 5th house, Putra Bhava, Rahu in the 5th house and Rahu in the 11th house; the Birth Chart calculator shows your Ketu's house.

A note on sources

Every classical line here was read in the corpus texts this app is written from: the English Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani, Uttara Kalamrita and Sanketnidhi are not in that corpus; their lines are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Ketu is the thinner node in these books: the Bhrigu Sutras give both nodes one shared set of sutras, Saravali has no node-in-house verse, and the only house lines written for Ketu alone are the two the Bhrigu Sutras quote.

The 5th house in brief

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 has the learned deduce from Putr Bhava "amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty (or authority), fall of position etc." Only one of the seven items is children; three concern the mind and two concern standing, including its loss. This page keeps the family statements and the intelligence statements apart.

BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 call the kendras and the konas, naming Putr and Dharm, auspicious houses, "the association with which turns even evil into auspiciousness", and group the 5th with the 2nd, 8th and 11th as a panaphara. Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 116-117) gives the same groupings. The 5th is neither a dusthana (6, 8, 12) nor an upachaya (3, 6, 10, 11), and most node rules in the books are written for one of those two groups. Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Jupiter the karaka of the 5th, and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 118) adds that Ketu is the karaka for paternal relations, Rahu for maternal ones.

The BPHS house chapter itself names Ketu twice. Ch. 16 Sl. 5: if the 5th lord is in fall in the 6th, 8th or 12th while Mercury and Ketu are in the 5th, the text gives one child. Sl. 7: with the 9th lord in the Lagna, the 5th lord in fall and Ketu in the 5th with Mercury, progeny comes "after a great deal of ordeal". Sl. 8 then gives the broader rule: the 5th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, in an enemy's sign, in fall, or in the 5th itself means issue "with difficulty". Those are combinations with several conditions, and the fallen 5th lord carries most of the weight; they are not a reading of Ketu in the 5th on its own.

The Bhrigu sutra, shared with Rahu

The Bhrigu Sutras give the nodes one chapter, Ch. 8, "Effects of Rahu and Ketu in the Twelve Houses". The translator's note at its head says the author gives the same effects for both nodes, presumably because they are always 7th from each other, while "the other authorities" give separate effects. The sutra for the 5th is said of "Rahu or Ketu". It is the same text as on the Rahu page, and it is not Ketu's own reading.

Sutras 11-13 (p. 111), in summary: no children or loss of children, attributed to the wrath of the Serpent God; children after a ritual the sutra names; windy diseases; sinful deeds; the "wrath of the king"; living in undesirable places. This app prescribes no rituals, so the ritual is named only as part of what the sutra says, and the children clause is reported, not applied. The sutra states no condition under which it holds.

The book's own planet chapters supply the conditions the node sutra lacks. In the Sun's 5th-house sutras (51-58, p. 22), the Sun with Rahu or Ketu brings the same Serpent-God line on children, but not if the combination is aspected by a benefic, Jupiter or Venus; the commentary that follows (p. 23) adds that the adverse result may not occur if the 5th lord and Jupiter, "significator of children", are well placed. In Jupiter's 5th-house sutras (24-31, p. 78), Jupiter with Rahu or Ketu carries the same line, which "will not happen if Jupiter is aspected by a benefic". So the one book that gives the harsh line also gives, in two other places, the benefic aspect that lifts it.

The separate lines for Ketu: Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani

Under "Other Views" for the 5th, the Bhrigu Sutras print two older authorities, each with one line for Rahu and a different one for Ketu. These are Ketu's own.

Read in the corpus: bhrigu-sutras.txt lines 4403-4416; saravali.txt Ch. 30, lines 4608-5013; bphs.txt lines 4447-4472.

The earlier version of this page, written without the books, reduced the Phaladeepika line to "unwise" and the Chamatkar Chintamani line to "courageous yet dependent". Both dropped their harder halves: Phaladeepika also gives loss of children, an evil nature and a spirit affliction, and Chamatkar Chintamani gives stomach ailments and few children. They are restored here, reported as what the texts say and not applied to anyone.

Read side by side, the three Ketu-relevant lines agree more than the Rahu ones do. All three touch children, and none gives a son outright, where Chamatkar Chintamani does for Rahu. The other subjects are spread across the house: judgement ("unwise"), standing ("wrath of the king", "dependent on others") and the body ("windy diseases", "stomach ailments"). BPHS Ch. 17 Sl. 3-5, in a list of body parts for a relative whose karaka or lord falls in the 6th or 8th, assign Rahu and Ketu the abdomen, and BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 30 calls Rahu windy and says "Ketu is akin to Rahu". These are classical associations, not medical advice.

What the books do not say

Saravali's Ch. 30, "Effects of Planets in Bhavas", has no line on Rahu or Ketu in any house; a search of the chapter finds neither name. The Bhrigu Sutras say so at the head of their node chapter: "Brihat Jatak and Saravali have not dealt with the effects of Rahu and Ketu in the various houses." BPHS has no node-in-house chapter. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara has none either; it describes Ketu by sign and nature only. This page does not fill that gap.

The Lajjit state: a rule about Ketu's company

BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 define the state by this house: placed in Putr Bhava, "if a Grah is associated with Rahu, or Ketu, or with Sūrya, Śani, or Mangal, it is in Lajjit Avastha". Sl. 19-23 give the house result for a Lajjit graha in the 5th, destruction of progeny or one surviving child, and Sl. 24-29 the general result: aversion to God, loss of intelligence, loss of child, interest in evil speech and listlessness in good things. The same slokas weigh everything by strength: weak grahas reduce good effects, strong ones give greater effects.

The rule is about the other planets in the 5th, not about Ketu. A Ketu here puts any companion into that state; Ketu alone puts nothing there. Advanced Predictive Astrology (pp. 123-125, aphorism no. 13) gives the modern counterpart: a planet in close company of Rahu or Ketu will not give good results in its Dasha. This app computes no avasthas.

The Karakamsa line, and a modern case

The line people usually mean when they connect Ketu with mathematics and astrology is BPHS Ch. 33 Sl. 87-92 1/2, on grahas in the 5th from the Karakamsa, the Navamsa sign of the Atma Karaka: "Ketu will make one a mathematician and skilful in Jyotish", and if Jupiter is related to that Ketu the learning comes by inheritance. That is a Jaimini count from a different starting point, as the Karakamsa calculator shows; it is not Ketu in the 5th from the Lagna, and a chart can have one without the other.

Advanced Predictive Astrology has one passage that names Ketu in the 5th from the Lagna, in a chapter on the Mars-Ketu combination in each house (pp. 32-33). It calls the 5th the house of "intelligence, romance, children and creative ability" and cites two charts: one with Mars and Ketu together in the 5th, and the Bengali poet the book names as Sukanta Battacharjee, with Ketu in the 5th, who "became an eminent poet". The same chapter attaches early death or chronic illness to several of its examples, including that one, which this page does not repeat as a reading. Two famous charts are anecdotes, not a rule.

The same book's list of Dasha aphorisms has a line on the Dasha of "Ketu occupying Sth house". The scan prints "Sth" for both the 5th and the 8th, and nothing in the sentence settles which is meant, so this page does not use it.

What Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara adds, and where it disagrees

Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (1994) gives Ketu a short description (pp. 83-84): it stands for hardships and isolation, and if well placed it gives a spiritual and meditative influence and inclines the native toward renunciation and emancipation. That is the closest the corpus comes to the modern "detachment" reading of Ketu, and it is said of Ketu in general, not of the 5th.

The same pages disagree with BPHS on two points that matter for a 5th-house Ketu. They make Aries Ketu's own sign (BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 give Scorpio, and "some sages" Pisces), exalt Ketu in Scorpio and Sagittarius, and debilitate it in Taurus and Gemini. And they give the nodes aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th from themselves. On that scheme a Ketu in the 5th would also aspect the 7th and the 2nd houses. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and this app follows BPHS, so its Ketu aspects the 11th alone.

Rahu in the 11th: the other half of this placement

Ketu and Rahu stand at the same degree of opposite signs, so in this app's whole-sign houses a Ketu in the 5th always has Rahu in the 11th. Ketu's single aspect falls on the 11th, on Rahu, and Rahu's returns to the 5th. The axis joins the trine of children and learning to the house of gains, where the sources quoted here are kindest to the nodes: BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 add in brackets that "Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in Sahaj, Ari and Labh", and Saravali Ch. 12 Sl. 3-5 make Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th, aspected by benefics, a canceller of evils. Because the Bhrigu Sutras use one set of sutras for both nodes, the sutra for Rahu in the 11th is the same text as for Ketu in the 11th; Rahu in the 11th house takes that side, and Ketu in the 11th house the reverse axis.

Counted the other way, a Ketu in the 5th is aspected by any planet sitting with Rahu in the 11th, by Mars from the 10th or 2nd house, by Jupiter from the 9th or 1st, and by Saturn from the 3rd or 8th, in whole-sign terms. The engine also lists Rahu as aspecting Ketu in every chart.

Whose agent is it? Ketu and the lord of the 5th

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give predominantly the effects of the house lord they join or of the house they occupy. The commentary closing the Bhrigu Sutras' node chapter (pp. 114-115) sets the order a "strong school of thought" uses: a node acts for the planet it is conjoined with; failing that, for a planet aspecting it; only when it is neither joined nor aspected does it stand for the lord of the house it occupies. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 142, rule 10) gives the same rule in short. In whole-sign houses the lord of Ketu's sign is the lord of the 5th itself, the lord of a trine.

One question the commentary leaves open is whether Rahu, which in this app always aspects Ketu, counts as "a planet who aspects" it. The text does not say. This page reads the rule as skipping the partner node, which leaves the sign lord in charge of an unaspected Ketu, and flags it as a reading. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give progress in education and happiness from children in the Dasha of the 5th lord; that line belongs to the lord's own period, not to Ketu's.

The same commentary gives three points from Uttara Kalamrita. Point (3): the nodes "become auspicious when they occupy a Trikona or Kendra position or when they are associated with the lord of that particular kendra or kona house in which they are posited", and also when joined with the lord of any kendra or kona. For the 5th that means a Ketu here qualifies by position alone, and more strongly if the 5th lord sits with it in its own sign. Point (1) adds that the nodes, "if endowed with strength", act like the planet that owns their house or joins them; point (2) concerns the 9th and 10th. The passage ends by withdrawing the auspiciousness if the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th, which depends on the rising sign. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17, the node Yoga Karaka rule, needs a kendra and does not reach the 5th.

Ketu's Mahadasha from the 5th

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 71-77 open Ketu's Dasha by calling him "a headless trunk (Kabandha)" and sort the period by house. The 5th is in the first group: Ketu in a kendra, a trikona or the 11th, in a benefic sign, exalted or in its own sign, gives cordial relations with the king, desired headship of a country or village, conveyances, happiness from children, gain from foreign countries, happiness from wife and cattle. Read strictly, the house and the sign conditions sit in one list joined by "or". The same passage splits the seven years into thirds: Raj Yoga at the start, fearfulness in the middle, ailments and distant journeys at the end. Ketu Mahadasha sets out the period sub-period by sub-period, and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

The adverse clause of the same passage is Ketu in the 2nd, 8th or 12th, "or receives a Drishti from a malefic". In this app every Ketu receives Rahu's aspect, and Rahu is a malefic (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11). Taken literally, the clause would catch every Ketu in every house, which cannot be what the text means; BPHS Ch. 26 gives the nodes no aspects of their own. The sensible reading is that the clause looks for a malefic graha aspecting Ketu, such as Saturn from the 3rd or Mars from the 10th, and that is how this page reads it.

Ch. 48 adds two general rules. Sl. 5-8: a graha in an auspicious house, "like Trikon etc.", at the commencement of its Dasha gives favourable results, and the placement at birth and at the start of the Dasha should both be weighed. Sl. 18-20 make Dashas of grahas in the 3rd, 6th and 11th unfavourable, except that Rahu and Ketu give favourable results there; the 5th is outside that exception but inside the "Trikon" of Sl. 5-8. Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 list the 1st, 7th, 8th and 12th as the node Maraka houses; the 5th is not among them, and this app computes no life-span.

Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time a Dasha by the lord's decanate and reverse the order for the nodes, "who are always retrograde": a Ketu in the last ten degrees of its sign delivers early in its period, one in the first ten late. The general test of Sl. 5-6 (Lagna, exaltation, own or friendly sign favourable; 6th, 8th, 12th, debility or enemy sign unfavourable) is silent on the 5th, so it does not contradict Sl. 71-77.

Ketu's sub-periods: where a trine is named

The Antar Dasha chapters (BPHS Ch. 52-60) give a condition list for Ketu's sub-period inside each Mahadasha. Some count from the Lagna, others from the Mahadasha lord, and the table keeps the two apart.

Mahadasha (BPHS)Ketu sub-period condition that can reach the 5thResult as the text gives it
Sun, Ch. 52 Sl. 58-64Good list is the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th; the 5th is not namedDefault result is difficult: body pains, loss of wealth, quarrels
Moon, Ch. 53 Sl. 47-49 1/2Ketu in a kendra, trikona or the 3rd with strength; or a kendra, 9th, 5th or 11th from the Dasha lord with strengthGain of wealth, happiness to wife and children; some loss at the start, then well
Mars, Ch. 54 Sl. 48-49 1/2Ketu in a kendra, trikona, 3rd or 11th, or with beneficsBeneficence of the king, birth of a son, authority, land gained slowly
Rahu, Ch. 55 Sl. 40-42 1/2Ketu in a kendra or trikonaIncrease in cattle; with benefics, recognition and gain
Jupiter, Ch. 56 Sl. 35-36 1/2Ketu in the 5th, 9th, 4th or 10th from the Dasha lordBeneficence of the king, success, profits in business
Saturn, Ch. 57 Sl. 16-19 1/2Evil "even if" Ketu is in a kendra or trikona from the Lagna; good in a kendra, trikona, 3rd or 11th from the Dasha lordLoss of position at the default; strength, courage and audience with rulers in the good case

Venus, Ch. 60 Sl. 67-68Ketu exalted, own, with a Yoga Karaka, or with positional strengthGains from the start; the translator notes no text says where Ketu gets positional strength
Read in bphs.txt lines 6153-6166, 6312-6321, 6489-6493, 6674-6681, 6899-6906, 7042-7053, 7216-7222, 7388-7392, 7745-7749. Remedial measures several of these chapters add are not repeated; this app does not prescribe them.

The pattern is plain. Five chapters put a Ketu in a trine from the Lagna on the good side (Moon, Mars, Rahu, Mercury and Ketu's own), one explicitly against it (Saturn, whose default for Ketu is evil "even if" well placed), and three count only from the Dasha lord or name other houses. The Mercury chapter is the only one that ties the good result to education, the 5th's own subject, and the Mars chapter gives the birth of a son. Every chapter keeps its warning houses: the 8th and 12th from the Dasha lord, and the 2nd and 7th, the houses of "physical distress" in almost all of them.

How this app reads Ketu in the 5th

Your Kundali row for Ketu turns favourable only for a planet exalted, in moolatrikona, own or friendly sign, and outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The engine returns Neutral dignity for Ketu in every sign, so every Ketu in the 5th gets one sentence: "classically more testing, tending toward real detachment from children or creative focus under affliction". The favourable string for this house, "intuitive, even mystical insight and creative depth - genuinely auspicious in this Trikona per classical rules", is in the code but unreachable. Read the row as the house's theme under affliction, not a finding about your Ketu: it does not look at Ketu's company, which every source above treats as decisive.

The Mahadasha sentence uses the testing wording, "disconnection, unexpected loss and a pull toward isolation", and the three-level grade reads neutral. In the code only a Ketu in the 1st reaches the favourable sentence, and only the 6th, 8th and 12th turn the grade to challenging, so every Ketu in the 5th gets testing and neutral. That is stricter than BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 71-77, which put the 5th in Ketu's good group. The app also does not compute avasthas, the sub-period conditions above, or the agent rule.

A transit is a different measurement. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, not the Lagna. Its rule for malefics, which it applies to Ketu, gives the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon as favourable and the 1st, 8th and 12th (and, for every planet, the 4th) as testing. The 5th from the Moon gets no rule and reads neutral. The mean node takes about eighteen months to cross a sign, moving backward.

A worked chart

An illustrative birth, not a real person: 7 August 1988, 22:30 IST, New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E), computed in this app's engine on 9 October 2026, which gave the same figures as the earlier run. Aries rises at 2.41 degrees. Ketu is at 21.84 degrees of Leo, in Purva Phalguni pada 3, in the 5th house; Rahu is in Aquarius in the 11th. The Sun, lord of Leo and so of the 5th, is in Cancer in the 4th, in a friendly sign, with a combust Mercury. The Moon, exalted, and Jupiter are in Taurus in the 2nd, Venus in Gemini in the 3rd, Mars in Pisces in the 12th and Saturn, retrograde, in Sagittarius in the 9th.

Nothing joins Ketu, and the engine lists only Rahu as aspecting it: Jupiter in the 2nd aspects the 6th, 8th and 10th, Saturn in the 9th the 11th, 3rd and 6th, Mars in the 12th the 3rd, 6th and 7th. On the reading above, this is the case the agent rule leaves to the sign lord: Ketu stands for the Sun, lord of the 5th, which sits in an angle, the 4th, in a friendly sign. That is the good side of BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 8, which reads a 5th lord in a dusthana, an enemy sign or fall against the house. With no companion in the 5th, the Lajjit rule has nothing to apply to.

Against Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26: Leo is not a benefic's sign and no benefic aspects the 5th from the Lagna, so the Lagna count meets none of the three conditions. Counted from the Moon in Taurus, the 5th is Virgo, Mercury's sign, and Saravali lets the stronger count prevail. Ketu in Leo carries no dignity in any of the schemes in the table above. The engine prints the row as "classically more testing, tending toward real detachment from children or creative focus under affliction" and the Mahadasha as testing, graded neutral.

The Moon in Mrigashira, a Mars nakshatra, puts Ketu's Mahadasha late, from 13 June 2063 to 13 June 2070. Ketu is in the last ten degrees of Leo, so the reversed decanate rule of Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 puts its results at the start of that period, which is also where Sl. 71-77 put the Raj Yoga third. Kaal Sarp: not present.

Checking a Ketu in the 5th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the birth time: Ketu's sign barely depends on it, its house entirely (what a missing birth time costs). Within two degrees of a sign boundary, the mean or true node can decide the sign.
  2. List any planet in the 5th with Ketu; by the agent rule its lordships are what Ketu mostly delivers, and by BPHS Ch. 45 it is in the Lajjit state. If that planet is the Sun or Jupiter, check for a benefic aspect, which the Bhrigu Sutras say lifts the children line.
  3. Failing a companion, list the grahas aspecting Ketu other than Rahu; failing both, read the 5th lord, its house and its sign.
  4. Check the 5th for a benefic sign or aspect, from the Lagna and from the Moon, and where Jupiter is.
  5. Test Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator against the tables above, and the 5th lord's strength in the Shad Bala calculator, which has no row for Ketu itself.
  6. Read the other end of the axis in Rahu in the 11th house, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
Does Ketu in the 5th house affect children?
The shared Bhrigu sutra, Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani all touch children harshly, and BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 5 and 7 name Ketu in narrow combinations with a fallen 5th lord. None of the house lines states a condition, the Bhrigu Sutras' own Sun and Jupiter chapters lift the line under a benefic aspect, and BPHS Ch. 47 lists happiness from children in a Ketu Dasha from a trine. This app makes no prediction about anyone's children.
Is the Bhrigu Sutras line written for Ketu?
No. The Bhrigu Sutras give one set of sutras for Rahu or Ketu in each house. Only the Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines they quote are separate for each node.
Does Ketu in the 5th make a person good at astrology or mathematics?
That line, BPHS Ch. 33 Sl. 87-92 1/2, is about Ketu in the 5th from the Karakamsa, a Jaimini count from the Atma Karaka's Navamsa sign. It is not about Ketu in the 5th from the Lagna.
What is the Lajjit state?
BPHS Ch. 45 calls a planet in the 5th that is associated with Rahu or Ketu, or with the Sun, Saturn or Mars, Lajjit, "ashamed", and says it harms the significations of progeny. It describes Ketu's companions in the 5th, not Ketu itself.
Is a Ketu Dasha good with Ketu in the 5th?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 71-77 put a Ketu in a trine in the good group, and most sub-period chapters favour a trine Ketu. The adverse clauses are about malefic aspect, the 2nd, 8th and 12th, and relations to the Dasha lord. The app itself prints testing for every 5th-house Ketu.
Why does the app call my Ketu in the 5th "classically more testing"?
Because the row's favourable wording needs a strong dignity, and the engine gives Ketu none in any sign. Every Ketu in the 5th gets the same sentence. Who joins and aspects your Ketu, which the texts treat as decisive, is something the row does not look at.
Is my Ketu in the 5th exalted or debilitated?
The texts do not agree. BPHS Ch. 47 exalts Ketu in Scorpio, Uttara Kalamrita (as the Bhrigu Sutras report it) adds a fall in Taurus, Sanketnidhi exalts it in Sagittarius, and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara exalts it in both Scorpio and Sagittarius and debilitates it in Taurus and Gemini. A strong school gives the nodes no sign at all. This app follows the last and assigns Ketu no dignity.
