The 5th house is called Putra Bhava, the house of children. That name is accurate and also too narrow. In Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) the same house carries learning, knowledge, sacred spells and authority, and it is one of the two trines that the text treats as the most fortunate places in a chart. This page sets out what the classical texts say about it, chapter by chapter, and how this app computes it. To follow along with your own chart, open the birth chart calculator and find the fifth sign counted from your Ascendant.
Most of what the old texts wrote about the 5th concerns sons, because lineage was the question their readers brought. Most of what a modern reader wants from it concerns the mind: study, judgement, creative work. Both are in the sources. They are kept apart here so that you can see which statements are about family and which are about intelligence, and which the app actually uses.
How to read this page
Classical verses are flat statements about family size, the survival of children and character. They are reported here as what a text says, not as a forecast for you. Many verses in the 5th-house chapters concern childlessness or the loss of children. They come from an era with very different mortality and medicine, each is conditional on several factors at once in the text itself, and this app does not compute any of them. Nothing here is medical or fertility advice.
What Putra Bhava signifies
BPHS gives the list in one line. Ch. 11 Sl. 6 says the learned should deduce from Putr Bhava "amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty (or authority), fall of position". Seven items, of which only one is children. Three are about the mind (spells, learning, knowledge), and two are about standing, including its loss.
Saravali names the house twice over. Its chapter on the signs and houses (Ch. 3) calls the fifth "Putra and Pratibha", and adds that the 5th is the house connected with Dhi, the Sanskrit word for intellect. BPHS Ch. 29 uses a third name when it lists the Arudhas: the pada of this house is "Mantra (Putr)". So across two texts the house has four labels: Putra (child), Pratibha, Dhi and Mantra.
| Source | What it assigns to the 5th house |
|---|---|
| BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 | Amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty or authority, fall of position |
| BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 | Progeny; its fixed significator (Bhava Karaka) is Jupiter |
| BPHS Ch. 31 | An unobstructed Argala on the 5th: "sons, grand sons and intelligence" |
| BPHS Ch. 29 | Its Arudha is named Mantra Pada (also Putr Pada) |
| Saravali Ch. 3 | Named Putra and Pratibha; connected with Dhi |
| Bhrigu Sutras, Part II commentary | Children, pleasure, arts, romance, speculation, mantra, higher learning, intelligence |
How the texts classify the 5th house
BPHS sorts the twelve houses into classes in Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36, and the 5th falls into two of them.
- Kon (trine). "Putr and Dharm Bhava are known by the name Kon." The 5th and the 9th are the trines of the Ascendant. Saravali Ch. 3 says the same: "the 5th and 9th are Trines."
- Panaphara (succedent). Dhan, Putr, Randhr and Labh, that is the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th, are the houses that follow the four angles.
- It is not a Dusthana. The evil houses are Ari, Randhr and Vyaya (6th, 8th, 12th). It is not an Upachaya either; those are the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th.
The trine status is the one that matters. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 says that Kendras and Konas "are auspicious Bhavas, the association with which turns even evil into auspiciousness." Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 then makes it a rule about lordship: "The Lord of a Kon will give auspicious results", and adds that "Putr and Dharm Bhava are specially for wealth". That is the opposite of what the same passage says about the lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th, which it calls givers of evil effects. The planet that rules your 5th is, by Parashara's rule, a helpful planet for your chart whatever its general reputation.
BPHS Ch. 32 also gives each house a fixed significator: for the 5th it is Jupiter, who also holds the 2nd, 9th and 11th. This is why almost every 5th-house rule in Ch. 16 checks Jupiter as well as the house lord.
BPHS Chapter 16: the judgement of Putra Bhava
Chapter 16 has 32 slokas and almost all of them are about children. Read in order, they form a method more than a list: first the house lord's position, then its dignity, then the planets in the house, then Jupiter. The useful thing to take from the chapter is that method.
The opening rule (Sl. 1-3)
The chapter opens with the lords of the Ascendant and of the 5th together. If both are in their own signs, or in an angle, or in a trine, the text promises "thorough happiness" through children. If the 5th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, it says there will be no offspring. If the 5th lord is combust, or weak and with malefics, the same. A conjunction of the 5th lord with the Ascendant lord "in a good Bhava" gives children early and happiness through them; the same conjunction in an evil house is called a defect.
Notice what the rule tests. It is never the 5th house alone. It is the 5th lord's house (good or Dusthana), its condition (combust, weak, with malefics) and its link to the Ascendant lord. Those three checks carry the whole chapter.
Difficulty and delay (Sl. 4-9, 11)
Sl. 8 is the general statement: if the 5th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or in an enemy's sign, or in fall, "or in Putr itself", children come "with difficulty". This softens Sl. 1-3 considerably: the same Dusthana placement that the opening verse calls a denial is here called a difficulty. Sl. 5-7 give narrower cases built on a fallen 5th lord with Mercury, Ketu or Saturn in the 5th, where the text speaks of a single child or of children after "a great deal of ordeal". Sl. 9 and Sl. 11 speak of adoption: the 5th owned by Saturn or Mercury and occupied or aspected by Saturn and Mandi, or six planets in the 5th with its lord in the 12th.
Supportive conditions (Sl. 12, 13, 16)
- Sl. 12: many children if the 5th lord is strong and the 5th receives the aspect of strong Mercury, Jupiter and Venus.
- Sl. 16: children are obtained if the 5th lord is exalted, or is in the 2nd, 5th or 9th, or is joined or aspected by Jupiter.
- Sl. 13: daughters, "so say Jyotishis", if the 5th lord is with the Moon or in her decanate. Parashara attributes this one to others.
Sl. 16 and Sl. 8 disagree about one placement. Sl. 16 lists the 5th lord in the 5th among the supportive positions; Sl. 8 lists "in Putr itself" among the difficult ones. Ch. 24 Sl. 53 resolves it with a condition, described below: the result depends on whether the lord there is with a benefic or a malefic.
Ages and numbers (Sl. 18-32)
The rest of the chapter gives ages and counts. Jupiter in the 5th with its lord beside Venus: a child in the 32nd or 33rd year (Sl. 18). The 5th lord in an angle with Jupiter, "the Karak": at 30 or 36 (Sl. 19). Jupiter in the 9th with Venus in the 9th from him beside the Ascendant lord: at 40 (Sl. 20). Sl. 24-32 then give numbers of sons from ten down to one for very specific combinations, and Sl. 21-23 give ages of bereavement. These are single verses for single combinations. Each needs three or four conditions at once, and the text gives no way to combine them. This app does not compute any age or number of children from them, and neither should a reader.
Verses not reproduced
BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 10, 14 and 15, and Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 28-36 and 38, pass verdicts on a person's parentage, legitimacy or the social status of a child's mother. They are part of the historical record and are named here so that the citation is complete. They are not reproduced, and the app has no feature built on them.
Which planet rules your 5th house
This app counts houses whole-sign from the Ascendant: the sign rising is the 1st house, and the fifth sign from it is the 5th. The lord of that sign is your 5th lord. The table is plain sign-lordship arithmetic, the same used by the engine. If you do not know your rising sign, the Lagna calculator finds it; it needs your birth time, and an unknown birth time leaves every house on this page undetermined.
| Ascendant | 5th house sign | 5th lord |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Leo | Sun |
| Taurus | Virgo | Mercury |
| Gemini | Libra | Venus |
| Cancer | Scorpio | Mars |
| Leo | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| Virgo | Capricorn | Saturn |
| Libra | Aquarius | Saturn |
| Scorpio | Pisces | Jupiter |
| Sagittarius | Aries | Mars |
| Capricorn | Taurus | Venus |
| Aquarius | Gemini | Mercury |
| Pisces | Cancer | Moon |
Two things follow from the table and the Ch. 34 rule. Mars for Cancer and Sagittarius, and Saturn for Virgo and Libra, are natural malefics that become trine lords, and the text says the lord of a Kon gives auspicious results. And every planet except the Sun and Moon rules two signs, so your 5th lord also rules another house. Saturn for Virgo rules the 5th and the 6th; for Libra, the 5th and the 4th.
The 5th lord in each of the twelve houses
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 49-60 gives one verse for the 5th lord in each house. The table paraphrases each. The verses are character sketches in the idiom of a royal court; read "king" and "minister" as rank and responsibility.
| 5th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | What the verse says |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 49 | Scholarly, happy through children; also miserly and crooked |
| 2nd | Sl. 50 | Many sons and wealth, head of a family, honourable, attached to spouse, famous |
| 3rd | Sl. 51 | Attached to co-born, a tale bearer and a miser, absorbed in his own work |
| 4th | Sl. 52 | Happy, with maternal happiness, wealth and intelligence; a king, minister or preceptor |
| 5th | Sl. 53 | Progeny if related to a benefic, none if related to a malefic; in either case virtuous and dear to friends |
| 6th | Sl. 54 | Sons who behave like enemies, or loss of them, or an adopted son |
| 7th | Sl. 55 | Honourable, very religious, happy through children, helpful to others |
| 8th | Sl. 56 | Not much happiness from children, given to anger, short of happiness; the verse also names cough and lung trouble |
| 9th | Sl. 57 | A prince or equal to one, an author of treatises, famous, shining in his family |
| 10th | Sl. 58 | Enjoys a Raj Yog and various pleasures, very famous |
| 11th | Sl. 59 | Learned, dear to people, an author, very skilful, with many sons and wealth |
| 12th | Sl. 60 | Without happiness from his own sons; an adopted son |
The pattern is consistent with Ch. 16. The three Dusthana placements (6th, 8th, 12th) are the three that reduce happiness through children. The trine and angle placements read well, and the 9th, 10th and 11th are where the verses turn to authorship, fame and Raj Yog; the 5th lord in the 10th house is the only one the chapter calls a Raj Yog outright. Sl. 53 is the verse that settles the earlier disagreement: the 5th lord at home gives progeny when a benefic is involved and denies it when a malefic is, but the person is "virtuous and dear to friends" either way.
The chapter's general rule applies to every row: the results are given in full, half or a quarter according to the planet's strength, and a planet that rules two houses gives the results of both. A single row is never the reading.
Other house lords placed in the 5th
The same chapter gives the reverse view: what happens to each other house when its lord sits in the 5th.
| Lord of the | BPHS Ch. 24 | Placed in the 5th |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 5 | Mediocre happiness from children; honourable, quick to anger, dear to the king |
| 2nd | Sl. 17 | Wealthy; the person and the children are intent on earning |
| 3rd | Sl. 29 | Has sons and is virtuous; a formidable spouse if a malefic joins or aspects |
| 4th | Sl. 41 | Happy and liked by all, virtuous, honourable, with self-earned wealth |
| 6th | Sl. 65 | Fluctuating finances, friction with sons and friends; yet happy and kind |
| 7th | Sl. 77 | Honourable, endowed with all virtues, always delighted, wealthy |
| 8th | Sl. 89 | Dull-witted, a limited number of children; long-lived and wealthy |
| 9th | Sl. 101 | Sons and prosperity, devoted to elders, bold, charitable and learned |
| 10th | Sl. 113 | All kinds of learning, always delighted, wealthy, with sons |
| 11th | Sl. 125 | Happy, educated, virtuous and religious |
| 12th | Sl. 137 | Short of sons and of learning; spends and travels to shrines hoping for a son |
Learning appears here as often as children. The 10th lord in the 5th gives "all kinds of learning", the 11th lord makes one educated, the 9th lord learned, and the two lords that harm the house, the 8th and the 12th, are said to take away wit and learning respectively. If you want the intellectual side of the 5th house from BPHS, this set of verses is where it is stated most directly. For the 9th lord, see the page on the 9th house.
Planets in the 5th house
Saravali Ch. 30 gives one verse per planet in each house, and the Bhrigu Sutras give a longer passage for each with conditions attached. The two do not always agree, and the Bhrigu Sutras are the more conditional of the two.
| Planet in the 5th | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 6: short of happiness, sons and wealth; fickle-minded but scholarly | Sutras 51-58: wise and brilliant, few children; no loss of sons if the 5th lord is well placed and strong |
| Moon | Sl. 18: timid, earns learning, many sons and friends, a scholar | Sutras 25-32: devoted in worship, of sattvik nature, a hard worker |
| Mars | Sl. 30: without happiness, wealth and sons; fickle, a talebearer | Sutras 34-45: few or no children, but in his own or exaltation sign a good number of children and high office |
| Mercury | Sl. 42: expert in mantras, many sons, learning, happiness | (not used here) |
| Jupiter | Sl. 54: abundant happiness, many sons and friends, learned, courageous, wealthy | Sutras 24-31: highly intelligent, a good conversationalist, prosperous children; loss if the 5th lord is in a malefic's or enemy's sign or debilitated |
| Venus | Sl. 66: happiness, sons and friends, very affluent, a minister or a justice | Sutras 29-33: full of wisdom, a minister, respected by government |
| Saturn | Sl. 78: short of happiness, sons, friends and intelligence; agitated | Sutras 22-26: childless and poor; daughters if in his own sign |
| Rahu or Ketu | (no verse in this chapter) | Sutras 11-13: no children or loss of children |
The benefics (Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus) read well in both texts, and the Sun, Mars and Saturn read badly for children while often keeping the intelligence: Saravali calls the Sun in the 5th "scholarly" in the same breath as it denies him sons. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary is explicit that the harsh verdict is not final. Its note on Mars says that the authorities agree Mars damages the significations of the 5th, "but Mars in the fifth is not always bad", pointing to Sutras 39-40 on Mars in his own sign. Each planet has its own page: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in the 5th.
How this app decides favourable or testing
The app's planet-in-house reading is built on the Bhrigu Sutras' structure, where nearly every passage has a good version and a strained version depending on the planet's condition. The engine applies one test to every planet: the placement is read as favourable when the planet is exalted, in its Moolatrikona, in its own sign or in a friendly sign, and is not in the 6th, 8th or 12th. Since the 5th is not a Dusthana, a planet in your 5th is judged on dignity alone. Jupiter in the 5th in a friendly sign shows the favourable line (intelligence and prosperity through children); Saturn in the 5th in an enemy's sign shows the testing line (delay or heaviness around children and creative expression). The app does not add aspects or conjunctions to this particular verdict, so treat it as a first reading.
Saravali Chapter 34 and the Lajjit Avastha
Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 gives the simplest rule in any of the texts: if the 5th house holds a benefic, or is aspected by a benefic, or is a benefic's sign, the native "will surely beget children"; otherwise not. It adds that the 5th should be counted from the Moon or from the Ascendant, "the stronger prevailing". Sl. 27 says a malefic's Navamsa on the 5th with a malefic's aspect gives progeny "with difficulty", and Sl. 37 gives the reverse of Sl. 25: a malefic's sign in the 5th, occupied by strong malefics with no benefic's aspect.
BPHS has a rule about planets in the 5th that appears nowhere near Ch. 16. In Ch. 45, on the states (Avasthas) of planets, the Lajjit or "ashamed" state is defined by this house: a planet placed in Putr Bhava and associated with Rahu or Ketu, or with the Sun, Saturn or Mars, is in Lajjit Avastha. The chapter goes on to say a planet in that state in the 5th harms the significations of progeny.
The 5th house in wealth and Raj Yogas
Outside its own chapter, BPHS uses the 5th house mostly for rank and money. This is the "royalty or authority" of Ch. 11 Sl. 6 put to work.
Raj Yogas (Ch. 39 and Ch. 34)
- Ch. 39 Sl. 3-5 says Raj Yogas are judged from two pairs: the Atma Karaka with the Putra Karaka, and the Ascendant lord with the 5th lord. The effect is full, half or a quarter by their strength.
- Sl. 6-7, Maha Raj Yog: the Ascendant lord and 5th lord exchange signs; or the Atma and Putra Karakas are in the Ascendant or the 5th, or exalted, or in own sign or own Navamsa, with a benefic's aspect.
- Sl. 33-34: "Dharm's Lord is akin to a minister and more especially Putr's Lord." If the 5th and 9th lords aspect each other, are together in any house, or are opposite each other, the text speaks of a kingdom.
- Sl. 37-38: the 4th or 10th lord joining the 5th or 9th lord; the 5th lord in the 1st, 4th or 10th with the 9th lord or the Ascendant lord.
- Ch. 34 states the general form: a lord of an angle and a lord of a trine exchanging signs, joined in an angle or trine, or in full mutual aspect, "cause a Yog".
- Ch. 36 Sl. 31-32, Kalanidhi Yog: Jupiter in the 2nd or 5th aspected by Mercury and Venus; the native is virtuous, honoured, healthy, wealthy and learned.
The app's yoga calculator checks one clean version of the 5th-9th rule: it finds the lords of your 5th and 9th houses and reports a Raja Yoga when the two sit in the same house. It also checks the angle-and-trine lord relationships, where the trine lords are the lords of the 1st, 5th and 9th. It does not attempt the full Ch. 39 list, which runs to dozens of overlapping rules. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh a yoga once it is found.
Great Affluence (Ch. 41 Sl. 2-8)
Chapter 41 opens with seven wealth combinations, and every one of them is built on the 5th house: a planet in its own sign, that sign being the 5th, with named planets in the 11th. The engine checks all seven exactly as written.
| BPHS Ch. 41 | In the 5th, in its own sign | Required in the 11th | Ascendants where it can occur |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sl. 2 | Venus | Mars | Gemini, Capricorn |
| Sl. 3 | Mercury | Moon, Mars and Jupiter | Taurus, Aquarius |
| Sl. 4 | Sun (in Leo) | Saturn, Moon and Jupiter | Aries |
| Sl. 5 | Saturn | Sun and Moon | Virgo, Libra |
| Sl. 6 | Jupiter | Mercury | Leo, Scorpio |
| Sl. 7 | Mars | Venus | Cancer, Sagittarius |
| Sl. 8 | Moon (in Cancer) | Saturn | Pisces |
These are rare by construction: the 5th lord must be at home and specific other planets must all be in one house. Sl. 16 is the broader statement and applies to everyone: "Dharm's Lord and Putr's Lord are capable of bestowing wealth", as are planets joined with them, and they do so "during their Dasha periods". Sl. 17 immediately qualifies it: all of this must be judged after weighing the strength and weakness of the planets involved. The opposite case is in Ch. 42 Sl. 7, where the 5th and 9th lords in the 6th and 12th, aspected by Maraka planets, are read as penury.
The 5th house beyond the birth chart
- Saptamsa (D7). BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns "sons and grandsons" to the seventh division. It is the divisional chart for the 5th house's first subject, and the Saptamsa calculator computes it. A division of 30 degrees into seven parts changes sign every few minutes of birth time, so it needs an accurate time.
- Navamsa (D9). BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 3 and Ch. 39 Sl. 6-7 both test whether the 5th lord or the Putra Karaka is in its own Navamsa. See the Navamsa as the second chart.
- Putra Karaka. Among the movable significators of Ch. 32, the Putra Karaka is one of the planets ranked by degree; the text notes that "some consider Matru Karak and Putr Karak, as identical". The Char Karakas calculator lists yours, labelled "Children & creativity".
- Mantra Pada. The Arudha of the 5th house (Ch. 29) is shown as "Mantra Pada" in the Bhava Padas calculator.
- Argala. Ch. 31 says an unobstructed Argala on the 5th gives "sons, grand sons and intelligence", and Sl. 18 that unobstructed Argala on the 1st, 5th and 9th together makes one fortunate. The Argala calculator works this out house by house.
Timing: when the 5th house becomes active
A house in a birth chart is a standing condition. It becomes an event through a dasha. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 gives a one-line result for the Mahadasha of each house lord, and for the lord of the 5th it is "progress in educational sphere and happiness from the children". It is one of the plainly good lines in that list; the lords of the 2nd, 3rd and 6th on either side of it get distress, unfavourable effects and danger from enemies. What a Mahadasha is covers the mechanics.
The app uses this verse directly. When it explains why your current Mahadasha reads the way it does, it finds which houses the dasha lord rules from your Ascendant and attaches the Ch. 48 theme of each. If the lord rules your 5th, the 5th-house theme appears, alongside the theme of the other house that planet rules. It then grades the period from the lord's own condition: good if the planet is exalted, in Moolatrikona or in its own sign; challenging if it is debilitated, in an enemy's sign, or sitting in the 6th, 8th or 12th; neutral otherwise. That last test is Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 in miniature. Your dates are in the Vimshottari dasha calculator.
Other dasha verses point the same way. Ch. 41 Sl. 16 says the 5th and 9th lords give wealth in their own periods. Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11 says that in the Sun Mahadasha the native is blessed with children if the Sun is with the lord of the 5th. In the sub-period chapters (Ch. 52-58), the 5th is repeatedly listed with the angles and the 9th as a placement from which a sub-lord gives its good results; Antardasha and Pratyantardasha explains those levels. In the sign-based dashas, Ch. 50 Sl. 18-19 says a sign's period is favourable when benefics occupy the 5th and 9th from it and the reverse when malefics do. The Jupiter Mahadasha matters to this house for a different reason: Jupiter is its fixed significator in every chart.
Transits
The app's transit reading counts from your natal Moon, not from the Ascendant, following the classical Gochara method. Under the rule the engine applies, a natural benefic (Jupiter, Mercury or Venus) passing through the 5th sign from your Moon is read as favourable. For Saturn, Mars and the other malefics the engine's source gives no rule for the 5th from the Moon, so the app reports those transits as neutral and does not invent a verdict. The Gochar calculator shows today's positions, and the timing feature sets them beside your dasha.
How to read the 5th house in your own chart
- Find the sign. Open your chart in the birth chart calculator and count five signs from the Ascendant, the Ascendant being one.
- Find the lord from the table above, and note the other house it rules.
- Locate the lord. Angle or trine: the supportive reading of Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3. The 6th, 8th or 12th: the difficult one. Then read its row in the Ch. 24 table.
- Check its condition: exalted, own sign, friendly, enemy's sign, debilitated, combust. The Shad Bala calculator gives a fuller strength figure. Ch. 24 scales every result by strength.
- Note what sits in the 5th and what it sits with. A benefic there, or a benefic's sign, is Saravali's simple test. A planet there beside the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu is the Lajjit state of BPHS Ch. 45.
- Check Jupiter, the fixed significator: his house, sign, and whether he joins or aspects the 5th lord (Ch. 16 Sl. 16).
- See whether the 5th lord meets the Ascendant lord or the 9th lord. That is where the Raj Yogas of Ch. 39 begin.
- Look up when the 5th lord's Mahadasha or Antardasha falls. That is when Ch. 48 says the house speaks.
The Kundali feature does these steps on one screen, and the AI chat can explain how they combine for your chart. How positions are calculated, and what the app does not claim, is set out on the methodology page; the books are listed under sources.
Common misreadings
- "The 5th house is only about children." BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 lists seven things and six of them are something else. For a reader who has or wants no children, the house still describes learning, judgement and standing.
- "A malefic in the 5th means no children." The verses that say so require more: Ch. 16 Sl. 17 needs three or four malefics and a fallen 5th lord and no benefic present. The Bhrigu Sutras reverse the verdict for Mars in his own or exaltation sign, and for the Sun when the 5th lord is strong.
- "The 5th lord in a Dusthana denies children." Sl. 1-3 says so; Sl. 8 of the same chapter says "with difficulty"; Sl. 16 lists Jupiter's aspect on the 5th lord as enough for children. The chapter is a set of weights, not a switch.
- "Saturn or Mars as 5th lord spoils the house." Ch. 34 says the lord of a trine gives auspicious results. For Libra, Saturn rules the 4th and 5th, an angle and a trine together.
- "The number of children can be read from the chart." The texts do give counts (Ch. 16 Sl. 24-32; Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 27 from Navamsas elapsed). The two methods are unrelated to each other and neither is implemented here.
- "The 5th is the house of romance, so it shows marriage." Romance appears in the modern commentary to the Bhrigu Sutras, not in Parashara's list. In BPHS marriage is judged from the 7th house; Ch. 32 notes only that a planet in the 5th is also said to become a significator for the wife.
- "A transit through my 5th house." The app's transit verdicts count from the Moon. The 5th from your Moon and the 5th from your Ascendant are usually different signs; the Moon sign calculator gives the first.
Frequently asked questions
- What does the 5th house represent in Vedic astrology?
- BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 assigns it amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty or authority, and fall of position. Saravali calls it Putra and Pratibha and connects it with Dhi, intellect. It is one of the two trines of the Ascendant, which BPHS treats as auspicious houses.
- Which planet is the significator of the 5th house?
- Jupiter. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 lists the fixed significators of the houses in order, and the 5th is Guru. Ch. 16 Sl. 19 calls him "the Karak" when discussing children. There is also a movable significator, the Putra Karaka, which is a different planet in each chart; the Char Karakas calculator finds it.
- How do I find my 5th house lord?
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator, count five signs from it inclusive, and take the ruler of that sign. The table on this page lists all twelve. You need a reliable birth time, because the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours.
- Is the 5th house lord always a good planet for me?
- By lordship, yes: BPHS Ch. 34 says the lord of a trine gives auspicious results, and Ch. 41 Sl. 16 says the 5th lord can bestow wealth in its dasha. How much it delivers depends on its strength and placement. Ch. 16 is clear that a combust, fallen or Dusthana-placed 5th lord gives its results with difficulty.
- What happens in the Mahadasha of the 5th lord?
- BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 gives "progress in educational sphere and happiness from the children". This app shows that theme when your dasha lord rules your 5th, together with the theme of the other house the same planet rules, and grades the period by the planet's dignity and house.
- Does this app predict whether or when I will have children?
- No. The classical verses on the number of children, the age of a first child and the loss of children are single-combination rules that the texts never reconcile, and the app does not compute them. It shows the 5th house, its lord, the planets in it, the Saptamsa chart and the relevant dasha dates. None of that is medical or fertility advice.
- Which divisional chart goes with the 5th house?
- The Saptamsa, the seventh division. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns "sons and grandsons" to it. Use the Saptamsa (D7) calculator with an accurate birth time.
- What is the difference between the 5th and the 9th house?
- Both are trines and BPHS pairs them constantly: both are "specially for wealth" (Ch. 34), and their lords together form a Raj Yog (Ch. 39 Sl. 33-34). Their subjects differ. The 5th holds children, learning and mantra; the 9th is Dharm Bhava, and Ch. 39 calls its lord "akin to a minister", adding "and more especially Putr's Lord".
