Planet in house

What the classical texts say about the Sun in the 5th house: the split between learning and progeny, the Lajjit state it creates, the Great Affluence yoga for Aries rising, and how this app grades the placement.

23 min read

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

Every classical verse on the Sun in the 5th house splits it in two. The mind does well: Saravali calls the person scholarly, the Bhrigu Sutras wise and brilliant. Children are the difficulty: Saravali says bereft of sons, the Bhrigu Sutras few children. And the Bhrigu Sutras then attach a condition that changes the second half: no loss of sons if the 5th lord is well placed and strong. That condition is the thread to follow through this page.

What follows sets out those statements with their sources, the second rule the Sun brings into this house (a state BPHS calls Lajjit), the one wealth yoga in BPHS that needs the Sun here, and how this app's engine grades the placement. It is a map of classical rules, not a forecast about anyone's children. For the planet in general see the Sun in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 5th house, Putra Bhava.

Where these readings come from

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Harsh lines about children, a parent or lifespan are reported as the texts' statements, not as forecasts. Verses about parentage in the 5th house chapters are left out. Nothing here says whether you will or will not have children.

Two texts, one split verdict

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 6

The verse (p. 100): the native "will be bereft of happiness, sons and wealth, will live by husbandry, will move in hills and fortresses, be fickle-minded, scholarly, devoid of strength and be short-lived". Most of the clauses are deprivations, the lifespan line among them, and one is a gift, and the gift is intellectual: Saravali calls the Sun in the 5th scholarly in the same breath as it denies sons. The short-lived clause is the text's statement, not a forecast. Saravali's kindest verses for the Sun are for the 3rd, 6th and 10th houses (Sl. 4, 7 and 11), and the 5th is not among them.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 51-58

The sutras (pp. 22-23): the native "will be poor, of bulky body", and in his seventh year his father "will face death, serious illness or misfortune". He will be wise and brilliant but have few children. If the 5th lord is well placed and strong, "there will be no death of sons". The Sun with Rahu or Ketu, or with Mars, is read as loss of children (the text names a curse and an enemy as the causes), but not if that pair is aspected by a benefic, Jupiter or Venus. The native is a devotee of the Sun, and if the Sun is strong the children will be prosperous. The father and children lines are the text's statements, not forecasts.

The Bhrigu Sutras agree with Saravali on both halves, the bright mind and the thin line of children, but they add the escape clauses Saravali does not give. The deciding factor is moved off the Sun and onto the lord of the house it sits in, the Sun's own strength, and benefic aspect. The commentator (p. 23) goes further: he reads the Sun as a functional benefic here for Taurus, Leo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius rising, and for those Ascendants expects the native to be wealthy, learned, respected and very intelligent. That is his view, not a sutra.

This is the same pattern the Bhrigu Sutras follow for the Sun in the 4th, where a hard start turns on the 4th lord, and the same principle their commentary states for every house: a house cannot prosper unless its lord is well placed. For the 5th, the books are unusually direct about it. The occupant sets a tendency; the lord settles it.

The two app lines are the engine's, not a sloka. The favourable one reads "genuine wisdom and prosperous children - capable of forming real Raja Yoga for several ascendants when Sun is a functional benefic here"; the testing one reads "real strain in matters of children and finances under affliction". The favourable line keeps the Bhrigu Sutras' wisdom and drops their "few children"; the testing line keeps the strain and drops the scholarship. Both are summaries, and neither replaces the conditions in the texts.

What the 5th house holds besides children

It would be easy to read the Sun in the 5th as a statement about children alone. BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 lists seven things to read from Putr Bhava: amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty or authority, and fall of position. One of seven is children. Three belong to the mind and two to standing, including its loss. Saravali (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31) names the house Putra and Pratibha and calls the 5th "the only House connected with Dhi", intellect.

Read against that list, the two Sun verses look less lopsided. "Scholarly" and "wise and brilliant" land on learning and knowledge; the Sun, which BPHS ranks royal (Ch. 3 Sl. 14-15), lands in the house of royalty or authority. The deprivations land on sons and wealth. A reader who has or wants no children still has five or six of the house's items to read, and the Sun's verses are on the brighter side for those.

The 5th is also a trine. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 makes it a Panaphara and a Kon, and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 calls the angles and trines auspicious houses whose association turns even evil into good. The Sun, a natural malefic by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11, is not in a house where malefics are welcome: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 says malefics harm the houses they occupy except the 6th, 8th and 12th. So the Sun in the 5th starts as a malefic in a good house, which is what both verses describe.

The Lajjit state: what the Sun does to planets beside it

BPHS has a rule about the 5th house that sits in a chapter about something else. Ch. 45, on the states (Avasthas) of planets, defines the Lajjit or "ashamed" state by this house: a planet placed in Putr Bhava and associated with Rahu or Ketu, or with the Sun, Saturn or Mars, is in Lajjit Avastha (Sl. 11-18). Sl. 19-23 add that a planet in Lajjit in the 5th means "destruction of progeny, or there will be only one surviving child", and Sl. 24-29 list loss of intelligence and loss of child among Lajjit's effects. These are the text's statements, not forecasts.

Read literally, this means the Sun in the 5th puts any other planet sharing the 5th into the Lajjit state. A Moon, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus beside the Sun there is a benefic in the 5th, which the house chapters count in its favour, and at the same time a Lajjit planet, which Ch. 45 counts against it. Ch. 45 Sl. 19-23 asks only that effects be estimated after weighing strength; it does not say how to weigh the two, and this page does not invent a rule for it. It is enough to know that a crowded 5th with the Sun in it is read two ways by the same book.

This app does not compute Avasthas for its planet-in-house reading. If your 5th holds the Sun and another planet, the Lajjit state is something to check by hand: list the planets in your 5th from the birth chart and note which of the named grahas they share it with.

The test Saravali gives for the house

Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 (p. 127) gives the simplest rule in any of the texts. If the 5th holds a benefic, or is aspected by a benefic, or is a benefic's sign, the native "will surely beget children"; otherwise not. The 5th may be counted from the Moon or from the Ascendant, the stronger prevailing. Sl. 37 gives the reverse: a malefic's sign in the 5th, occupied by strong malefics with no benefic's aspect.

The Sun is a malefic, so it does not meet the first clause on its own. But the other two clauses look at the sign and the aspects, not the occupant, and the sign the Sun occupies in your 5th is decided by your rising sign. Seven of the twelve possible signs are a benefic's: Taurus and Libra (Venus), Gemini and Virgo (Mercury), Cancer (the Moon), Sagittarius and Pisces (Jupiter). The signs that put a malefic's sign in the 5th are Aries and Scorpio (Mars), Leo (the Sun itself), and Capricorn and Aquarius (Saturn).

So by Saravali's own test a Sun in the 5th does not settle the question even within Saravali: a Sun in Pisces in the 5th satisfies the benefic-sign clause, and a Sun in Aquarius there leans toward Sl. 37 unless a benefic aspects it. The same test can be run from the Moon, and the Moon sign calculator gives the sign to count from.

Your rising sign: sign, dignity and lordship

Houses in this app are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Sun is in your 5th when it occupies the fifth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds it. Three things follow from the rising sign: the sign the Sun is in, the Sun's dignity there, and the house the Sun rules (wherever Leo falls). BPHS Ch. 24 gives one sloka for each house lord placed in the 5th, and the Sun is always the lord of one house, so one of those slokas always applies.

Sign and lordship are arithmetic from SIGN_LORDS; dignity is dignityOf() with no chart (natural relation only); Ch. 24 rows checked against BPHS (bphs.txt 1766-2071). Harsh clauses are the text's statements, not forecasts.

Nine of the twelve rows are good or mixed-good, and the pattern runs through the whole of Sl. 49-60 too: trine and angle lords in the 5th bring learning, sons and wealth, the 8th and 12th lords take them away, and the 6th lord brings friction. The Sun's own verses say "few children" whoever is rising; Ch. 24 says what the lordship the Sun carries adds or subtracts. They are separate layers of one reading.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 gives each planet a role for each Ascendant. Set beside this table they agree in most places. For Aries, Taurus, Leo and Sagittarius rising the Sun is called auspicious; for Scorpio rising it is the Yoga Karaka with the Moon; for Gemini, Libra and Pisces rising it is called malefic; for Cancer and Aquarius rising, a killer (Maraka); for Virgo rising it depends on association; for Capricorn rising it is neutral, and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 adds that 8th lordship is not evil for the Sun and Moon.

Rows where dignity and lordship pull apart

  • Aries rising: the Sun rules and occupies the 5th, in its own sign. Sl. 53 makes the outcome for children depend on whether the Sun is related to a benefic or a malefic. Ch. 16 itself disagrees about a 5th lord at home: Sl. 8 lists the 5th lord "in Putr itself" among the cases of issues "with difficulty", while Sl. 16 lists it in the 5th among the cases where children are obtained. Sl. 53's benefic-or-malefic test is one way to read between them.
  • Gemini rising: the Sun is debilitated in Libra, the weakest dignity, yet the Ch. 24 line for a 3rd lord in the 5th gives sons and virtue. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 says a planet gives full, half or a quarter of its results by strength; a debilitated Sun is at the low end.
  • Capricorn rising: an 8th lord in the 5th gives a limited number of children and a long, wealthy life in Sl. 89, and the Sun is in an enemy sign in Taurus. Ch. 34 softens the 8th lordship for the Sun specifically.
  • Sagittarius rising: the Sun is exalted in Aries and rules the 9th, a trine lord in a trine. Sl. 101 is among the warmest lines in the table.

The 5th lord, Jupiter and the escape clause

Since the Bhrigu Sutras turn the whole reading on the 5th lord, the method BPHS Ch. 16 gives for that lord is the next thing to read. It comes down to three checks: the lord's house (good or Dusthana), its condition (combust, weak, with malefics), and its link to the Ascendant lord. Sl. 1-3: the lords of the Ascendant and the 5th in their own signs, angles or trines promise "thorough happiness" through children; the 5th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is read as no offspring; a combust or weak 5th lord with malefics as no children, or children who "quit the world soon". Sl. 8 softens the dusthana case: a 5th lord there, in an inimical sign, fallen, or in the 5th itself gives issues "with difficulty". These are the text's statements, not forecasts.

With the Sun in your 5th, the 5th lord is the lord of the Sun's sign: Mars for a Sun in Aries or Scorpio, Venus for Taurus or Libra, Mercury for Gemini or Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, Jupiter for Sagittarius or Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn or Aquarius, and the Sun itself for Leo. That planet is also the one whose position decides the Sun's dignity in this engine, so a single planet answers both the Bhrigu Sutras' question and the engine's.

One combustion detail follows. Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 counts a combust 5th lord against the house. When that lord shares the Sun's sign in the 5th it is, by definition, close to the Sun and may well be combust; this app flags combustion on each planet using orbs that differ by planet (the Sun page lists them). A 5th lord sitting in its own sign with the Sun is in its own house, which Ch. 16 counts as good, and possibly combust, which it counts as bad.

Jupiter is the fixed significator of the 5th (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34), and Ch. 16 Sl. 16 lists Jupiter joined to or aspecting the 5th lord among the conditions under which children are obtained, alongside an exalted 5th lord or one in the 2nd, 5th or 9th. Sl. 12 adds many children when a strong 5th lord and the 5th receive the aspect of strong Mercury, Jupiter and Venus. The Jupiter in the 5th house page covers the significator in this house, and the Jupiter reference covers its aspects.

Ch. 24 Sl. 49-60 then reads the 5th lord in each house. Sl. 58 (5th lord in the 10th) is the one the chapter calls a Raj Yog outright, and Sl. 54, 56 and 60 (in the 6th, 8th and 12th) are the hard ones: sons equal to enemies, or their loss, or an adopted or purchased son; not much happiness from children; and none from one's own sons.

Great Affluence: the one yoga that needs this Sun

BPHS Ch. 41 opens with seven wealth combinations (Sl. 2-8), and every one is built on the 5th house: a planet in its own sign, that sign being the 5th, with named planets in the 11th. Sl. 4 is the Sun's: the Sun in Leo in the 5th, with Saturn, the Moon and Jupiter in the 11th. Only Aries rising puts Leo in the 5th, so this combination exists for one Ascendant only, and it needs three other planets in one sign at once. These are rare by construction, and this app's yoga engine checks all seven as written.

The geometry is worth noticing. The Sun in the 5th aspects the 11th, so in Sl. 4 the Sun looks directly at the three planets it needs. Ch. 41 Sl. 16-17 states the broader rule behind the chapter: the 9th and 5th lords are capable of bestowing wealth during their dashas, and everything must be judged after weighing the strength of the planets involved. The yogas calculator reports which named combinations your chart forms, and what a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh one once it is found.

The app's own favourable line says the Sun here is "capable of forming real Raja Yoga for several ascendants". The texts support a narrower statement. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 3-5 judges Raj Yogas from the Ascendant lord with the 5th lord (and, from the Karakamsa, the Atma and Putra Karakas), and Sl. 33-34 from the 5th and 9th lords in mutual aspect, conjunction or opposition. The Sun is the 5th lord only for Aries rising, the Ascendant lord only for Leo rising and the 9th lord only for Sagittarius rising, so those are the rising signs where the Sun can be one of the two lords those verses ask for. For Scorpio rising, Ch. 34 makes the Sun a Yoga Karaka with the Moon. Whether a yoga forms depends on the other lord, not on the Sun alone.

How this app grades a Sun in the 5th

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line for any planet whose dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and whose house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 5th is not a dusthana, so for the Sun here the verdict turns on dignity alone. The 5th lord, Jupiter, the Lajjit state and Saravali's benefic test play no part in that one line.

Outside Aries, Leo and Libra, the Sun's dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 with the sign's lord. The natural half is fixed: the Moon, Mars and Jupiter are friends, Venus and Saturn enemies, Mercury neutral. The temporary half comes from your chart: the lord is a temporary friend if it sits 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Sun, counting the Sun's sign as the first, and a temporary enemy otherwise. Only Friend or Great Friend counts as a Friendly sign. For a Sun in the 5th that gives four groups of rising signs.

  • Always favourable: Aries rising (Sun in Leo, own sign) and Sagittarius rising (Sun exalted in Aries).
  • Favourable only if the sign lord sits in a temporary-friend position from the Sun: Cancer, Leo, Scorpio and Pisces rising, where the Sun is in Scorpio, Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer. The lord in the Sun's own sign, or 5 to 9 signs from it, drops the result to Neutral and the testing line prints.
  • Favourable only if Mercury sits in a neighbouring position from the Sun: Taurus and Aquarius rising (Sun in Virgo or Gemini). Mercury in the Sun's own sign makes it an Enemy sign.
  • Never favourable here: Gemini rising (Sun debilitated in Libra), Virgo and Libra rising (Saturn's signs, Neutral at best), and Capricorn rising (Venus's Taurus, Neutral at best).

Mercury's condition is worth a sentence. Mercury is never far from the Sun in the sky, so it very often sits in the Sun's own sign or the sign next to it. In the Taurus and Aquarius rows that is the difference between Enemy and Friendly, decided by which side of a sign boundary Mercury happens to be.

The dasha panel applies a stricter test. dashaQuality() calls the Sun good only if exalted, Moolatrikona or in its own sign, challenging if debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a dusthana, and neutral otherwise. A Sun in a friendly sign in the 5th therefore shows a favourable house line beside a neutral dasha quality; the Sun Mahadasha page sets out both tests side by side.

Strength in the 5th

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7, as set out on the Sun in the 4th house page, measures the Sun's directional strength from the 4th house: zero at the nadir, full at the 10th. The 5th is one house past the zero point, so a Sun in the 5th has little directional strength, a little more than in the 4th. Directional strength is one of six Shad Bala components and does not decide a reading; the Shad Bala calculator shows all six.

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 gives the share of good effects by dignity: full in exaltation, three quarters in Moolatrikona, half in its own sign, a quarter in a friend's sign, an eighth in a neutral sign and nothing in an enemy sign or in debilitation. That scale is the one to hold the Ch. 24 rows against. The Sagittarius row, an exalted Sun ruling the 9th, gets the whole of Sl. 101; the Gemini row, a debilitated Sun ruling the 3rd, gets nothing of Sl. 29 on this scale.

The Sun's aspect on the 11th

The Sun has only the 7th-sign aspect that every planet has; BPHS Ch. 26 gives special aspects to Mars, Jupiter and Saturn alone. From the 5th the Sun aspects the 11th house, and the engine's aspectedHouses() returns exactly that. The 5th and 11th are a pair: the 11th is the house of gains, and BPHS Ch. 41 builds its affluence combinations on planets in the 5th and 11th together, as above.

None of BPHS, Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras gives a separate verse for the Sun aspecting the 11th from the 5th, so this page states none. What the engine does is mechanical: the Sun is a malefic, so its aspect lowers the Shad Bala of any planet in your 11th. For the house it falls on, see the 11th house; for the Sun occupying that house, see the Sun in the 11th house, one of Saravali's kindest Sun placements.

Timing: the Sun's periods and the 5th lord's

A placement is a standing condition; the dashas are when the texts expect it to show. The Sun's Mahadasha lasts six years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15), and it runs an Antardasha inside every other Mahadasha; the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates. Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 make any dasha lord favourable in the Lagna or in its exaltation, own or a "Shant" (friendly) sign, and unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitation or an inimical sign.

The Sun's own section adds a line that belongs on this page. Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11 lists the conditions of a strong Sun dasha, and among them: with the lord of Putr, the 5th, the native is blessed with children. A Sun in the 5th sits in the 5th lord's sign, but is associated with that lord in the sense of the verse only if the lord is in the same sign, or the Sun itself is the lord (Aries rising). Sl. 12-15 give the weak Sun's dasha: anxieties, loss of wealth, punishment from government, defamation, opposition by kinsmen and distress to the father, among others. Children are not in that list.

For Aries rising, the Sun is also the 5th lord, and BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 5th lord's dasha "progress in educational sphere and happiness from the children"; this app words it "progress in education and happiness through children" and shows it when your dasha lord rules your 5th. For other rising signs, the 5th lord's own dasha carries that theme, and the Sun's carries the theme of whichever house it rules.

BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 18-32 give ages and numbers of children for particular combinations. Each needs two to four conditions at once, and the chapter gives no way to combine them; this app computes none of them, and this page does not either. How sub-periods layer onto the six years is in the Antardasha and Pratyantar guide.

The Sun passing through the 5th from your Moon

The Gochar calculator reads transits from the natal Moon. For a natural malefic, the engine marks the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon favourable and the 1st, 8th and 12th testing; the 5th is in neither list and reads as "a classically unremarkable transit position from your Moon". The Sun spends about a month in each sign. This is unrelated to a natal Sun in the 5th house, which is counted from the Ascendant.

These are this app's engine figures for 22:00 IST on 10 April 1990 in New Delhi. The same Sun, a few hours earlier, is worked on the Sun in the 4th and Sun in the 3rd pages; only the Ascendant has moved. This is an illustration of the rules, not a reading of any person.

Why Friendly sign: Jupiter, lord of Pisces and a natural friend of the Sun, is in Gemini, the 4th sign counted from the Sun, a temporary-friend position. Natural friend plus temporary friend is Great Friend, so the favourable line prints. Had Jupiter been in Virgo, opposite the Sun, the result would have been Neutral and the testing line would have printed for the same Sun.

What the texts add, layer by layer. With Scorpio rising the Sun rules Leo, the 10th, so Ch. 24 Sl. 113 applies: all kinds of learning, always delighted, wealthy, with sons. Ch. 34 makes the Sun a Yoga Karaka with the Moon for this Ascendant. The 5th lord, Jupiter, is in the 8th: Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 reads a 5th lord in a Dusthana as a denial and Sl. 8 as difficulty, and Ch. 24 Sl. 56 reads it as not much happiness from children. By the Bhrigu Sutras' escape clause, this is the condition that matters, and it is not met here.

Saravali's test points the other way. Pisces in the 5th is a benefic's sign, which meets one clause of Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 from the Ascendant. Counted from the Moon in Libra, the 5th is Aquarius, and Venus, a benefic, is in it. No other planet shares the 5th with the Sun, so the Lajjit state does not arise. The Sun aspects the 11th, Virgo, which is empty. Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11's children clause needs the Sun with the 5th lord; Jupiter is three signs away. The page cannot net these into a verdict and does not try: they are the factors the texts name, read off one chart.

A checklist for your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement in the birth chart calculator. The Sun is in the 5th if it occupies the fifth sign from the Ascendant. The Ascendant changes sign about every two hours, so an uncertain birth time can move the house.
  2. Find the Sun's dignity: exalted in Aries, own in Leo, debilitated in Libra; otherwise count from the Sun to its sign lord.
  3. Find the house the Sun rules and read that row of the Ch. 24 table above.
  4. Find the 5th lord, the lord of the Sun's sign. Is it in an angle, a trine or its own sign, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th? Is it combust, or with malefics? This is the Bhrigu Sutras' condition.
  5. Check Jupiter: does it join or aspect the 5th lord (Ch. 16 Sl. 16)?
  6. List any other planet in your 5th and note the Lajjit state (Ch. 45).
  7. Run Saravali's test from both the Ascendant and the Moon: is the 5th a benefic's sign, or aspected by a benefic?
  8. For a second opinion on children specifically, BPHS Ch. 7 assigns "sons and grandsons" to the Saptamsa; the Saptamsa (D7) calculator computes it.

How the positions are computed, and the limits of the method, are on the methodology page; the books behind each reading are listed on the sources page.

Readings that go further than the texts

  • "The Sun in the 5th means no children." Saravali comes closest, "bereft of happiness, sons and wealth", in a verse with no conditions; the Bhrigu Sutras say few children, and no death of sons if the 5th lord is well placed and strong. Both are classical statements, not forecasts.
  • "The Sun in the 5th makes you brilliant." Both texts give the mind a good word, but BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 137 (Virgo rising) gives the same Sun "bereft of sons and learning". Lordship and dignity qualify it.
  • "Favourable in the app means children are assured." The engine's line rests on the Sun's dignity only.
  • "Any yoga with the Sun in the 5th is a Raja Yoga." The Raj Yoga verses of BPHS Ch. 39 need two lords together; the one wealth yoga built on this Sun (Ch. 41 Sl. 4) needs Aries rising and three planets in the 11th.
  • "A Sun in the 5th makes every planet beside it unlucky." Ch. 45's Lajjit state is a classical classification about progeny, not a general verdict, and this app does not compute it.
  • "The 5th from my Moon in transit is my 5th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.

Questions about the Sun in the 5th

Is the Sun in the 5th house good or bad?
Both, by subject. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 6 and the Bhrigu Sutras both give the mind a good word (scholarly; wise and brilliant) and both thin the line of children. The Bhrigu Sutras add that there is no loss of sons if the 5th lord is well placed and strong, and BPHS Ch. 24 changes the reading by the house the Sun rules.
Does the Sun in the 5th deny children?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 6 says bereft of sons, without conditions; the Bhrigu Sutras say few children, with no death of sons if the 5th lord is well placed and strong. BPHS Ch. 16 judges children mainly by the 5th lord, Jupiter and the Ascendant lord, and this page computes no outcome.
Why does the app call my Sun in the 5th favourable?
Because its dignity is exalted, own, Moolatrikona or friendly, and the 5th is not a dusthana. The engine does not test the 5th lord or Jupiter for this line.
What is the Lajjit state?
BPHS Ch. 45 calls a planet in the 5th "ashamed" (Lajjit) when it is associated with Rahu, Ketu, the Sun, Saturn or Mars, and says such a planet harms the significations of progeny. With the Sun in the 5th, any other planet there qualifies.
Which rising sign gives the strongest Sun in the 5th?
By dignity, Sagittarius rising (Sun exalted in Aries, ruling the 9th) and Aries rising (Sun in its own Leo, ruling the 5th). Aries rising is also the only Ascendant for the Ch. 41 Sl. 4 Great Affluence combination.
What does the Sun aspect from the 5th?
Only the 11th house, by its 7th-sign aspect. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for it; the engine treats it as a malefic aspect in Shad Bala.
When would a Sun in the 5th show its results?
Classically in the Sun's six-year Mahadasha and its Antardashas, judged by the Ch. 47 dignity test. Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11 adds children in the Sun's dasha when it is with the 5th lord.
Is there a divisional chart for this?
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns "sons and grandsons" to the Saptamsa (D7), which this app's calculator computes. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-27 also reads the Navamsas of the 5th for children.
