What the classical texts say about the Sun in the 3rd house; how your rising sign changes which house the Sun rules and how it is judged; and how this app's engine decides whether your Sun in the 3rd reads as favourable.

The Sun in the 3rd house is one of the placements the classical texts treat most kindly for the person and least kindly for the person's siblings. The reason is structural, not mysterious. The Sun is a natural malefic, the 3rd is one of the growing houses where malefics are said to do well, and the same house also carries younger brothers and sisters, which a malefic is said to harm. Both readings sit in the same sources, sometimes in the same verse.

This page sets out those statements with their chapter and sloka, the conditions the texts themselves attach, and how this app's engine turns the placement into the line you see in your own chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast. For the Sun as a graha, start with the Sun in Vedic astrology; for the house itself, the 3rd house, Sahaja Bhava. This page does not repeat those two in full; it works out what happens when they meet.

A note on sources

Every classical statement on this page was checked against the English translations of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Where a verse contains a harsh line about siblings, a parent or the body, it is reported as the text's statement, not as a forecast. Nothing about siblings' lives or numbers is computed by this app, and nothing here is a statement about your family.

The house: what Sahaja Bhava stands for

BPHS Ch. 11 Sloka 4 lists the subjects of the 3rd house: valour, servants or attendants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction, journeys, and the death of a parent. Ch. 32 narrows the family meaning to younger brothers and sisters, and names Mars as the house's fixed significator (Sl. 31-34). The Bhrigu Sutras edition behind this app adds a longer, later list (Part I Ch. II, p. 14): memory, courage, firmness, younger brothers or sisters, neighbours, short travel, writing, contracts, and the hands and arms. This page treats the BPHS list as the core and the longer list as later practice.

Two classifications matter more than any single signification when a planet sits in the 3rd. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 make the 3rd an Upachaya, one of the four growing houses with the 6th, 10th and 11th. The same passages make it an Apoklima, a cadent house. And Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says a planet that owns the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, with the 3rd the mildest of the three. The first two are statements about occupying the house. The third is about ruling it. A Sun in your 3rd is always an occupant; it rules the 3rd only if you have Gemini rising.

What the Sun brings into the house

BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 11 counts the Sun among the natural malefics, with Saturn, Mars, the waning Moon, Rahu and Ketu. This app uses the same split: its malefic list is the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Not every voice in the sources accepts the label. The modern commentator in the Bhrigu Sutras, writing under the Sun in the 1st house, argues that a planet that is the source of light and life to the universe should not be termed a malefic, while granting that it is a hot and cruel planet (Comments, pp. 16-17). The Sun in the 2nd house page reports that objection in full.

What the label does in practice is decide where the Sun is welcome. Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 86-87 (pp. 105-106) states the general rule: malefics harm the houses they occupy, except the 6th, 8th and 12th, where they are auspicious, and the result can be maximum, medium or nil according to strength, relationships, aspects and dignity. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary on this very placement (p. 20) states the companion principle for the growing houses: "malefics in upchaya houses ... give beneficial results". The 3rd is the one house where both principles meet a malefic at once, which is why the Sun's own Saravali verses are kind to it here.

What the texts say about the Sun in the 3rd

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 4

Saravali gives one verse for each planet in each house. For the Sun in the 3rd (p. 100) it reads: the native "will be valorous, strong, will lose co-born, be dear to people, good-looking, very learned and will conquer his enemies". It is one of the Sun-in-house verses Saravali is kindest to, alongside the 6th (Sl. 7) and 10th (Sl. 11), two of the other Upachayas. The 11th (Sl. 12) is mixed: interested in gathering money, strong and successful, but also hating others, devoid of servants, himself a servant and devoid of affection. So Saravali's own pattern for the Sun follows the growing-house rule closely, though not exactly.

The verse also shows the two subjects of the house moving in opposite directions. Courage, strength and victory over opponents go to the person. The co-born are the cost. Saravali does something similar for all three natural malefics in the 3rd: the Sun, Mars (Sl. 28, "courageous, unconquerable, bereft of co-born") and Saturn (Sl. 76, "courageous") all receive courage there, and two of the three lose siblings in the same breath.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 33-42

The Bhrigu Sutras give the Sun in the 3rd ten sutras (pp. 19-20), and they are harsher on siblings than any other source. The native will be "brotherless (no younger brothers)" and his elder brothers "will not survive"; there will be bodily troubles in the 4th, 5th, 8th and 12th years. With a malefic, the native does cruel deeds and "will have two mothers"; he is valorous, a brave fighter with a good reputation who enjoys his wealth. With a benefic, the brothers become prosperous, and if the lord of the 3rd is strong, "the brother will be long lived". If the Sun is both associated with and aspected by a malefic, the text says the family will be destroyed; if it is aspected by a benefic with no malefic influence, the family grows and the native is wealthy and happy. These are the text's statements, reported here, not forecasts.

The conditions are the important part. The commentator explains the "two mothers" through the 3rd being the 12th from the 4th, and the threat to the family through the 3rd being the 2nd from the 2nd; both readings are his, not the sutra's. The same text returns to the 3rd lord under other planets too: under Mercury (Sutras 25-31, p. 64) a strong 3rd lord makes the brothers long-lived and a weak one makes them suffer; under Venus (Sutras 20-22, p. 89) a 3rd lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or with malefics, means loss of brothers. The occupant of the house is never the whole answer.

This app wrote its own one-line reading of the placement from that chapter. The favourable line reads "real courage and initiative - the Sun does well as a natural malefic in this upachaya house when supported". The testing line reads "strain with siblings and family growth under real affliction". The source's harder sibling language was softened to strain on the way in, and the code comments record why: the app makes no claim about anyone's survival.

BPHS Ch. 14: Sloka 14 and the sloka after it

BPHS gives the 3rd house its own chapter. Sloka 14 is the verse most often quoted about this placement: "Sūrya in Sahaj Bhava will destroy the preborn"; Saturn there destroys the afterborn, and Mars both. Sloka 15 follows at once: the effects related to brothers and sisters are to be announced only after estimating the strength and weakness of such combinations. The chapter ends on that instruction.

Two things follow. First, the BPHS verse names elder siblings for the Sun, while Ch. 32 makes the 3rd the house of the younger ones. In Ch. 14 elder siblings appear only in the counting verses (Sl. 7-11) and in Sloka 14. Second, quoting Sloka 14 without Sloka 15 turns a conditional rule into a flat one, which the text itself does not do.

BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1-6: the conditions that decide

The opening slokas of the same chapter supply the conditions Sloka 15 asks for. A benefic joining or aspecting the 3rd gives co-born and courage (Sl. 1). The 3rd lord with Mars in or aspecting the 3rd gives good results from the house (Sl. 2); the same two with a malefic, or in a malefic's sign, bring "destruction at once of co-born" in the text's words (Sl. 3). The 3rd lord with Mars in the 8th is the other difficult case, and happiness in sibling matters comes when Mars or the 3rd lord is in an angle, a trine, exaltation or friendly divisions (both in Sl. 5-6).

Put those beside the Bhrigu Sutras and the agreement is close. Both make sibling outcomes turn on the 3rd lord, both treat a benefic's company as protective, and neither treats the Sun's presence alone as the verdict. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 21-24 (pp. 126-127) adds a sign-based version: when the 3rd is owned by a malefic and occupied by a malefic, "the co-born are destroyed", and a benefic's sign holding benefics brings happiness from them. A Sun in the 3rd is a malefic occupant, so under Saravali the sign it sits in is part of the reading.

Your rising sign changes the reading

This app counts houses by whole signs from the Ascendant, so the 3rd house is the third sign from your rising sign. Two things then follow from arithmetic alone. The Sun's sign is fixed by the Ascendant, and so is the one house the Sun rules, because the Sun owns a single sign, Leo. If you do not know your rising sign, the Lagna calculator finds it from your birth time and place; without a birth time no house placement can be read at all.

BPHS Ch. 24 gives one sloka for the lord of each house placed in the 3rd. Since the Sun in your 3rd is always the lord of whichever house Leo occupies, one of those slokas always applies. The table pairs them up. The Sun's dignity in each sign is the engine's natural reading; the next section shows how your own chart can move it.

Sign and lordship are arithmetic from SIGN_LORDS; dignity is dignityOf() with no chart; Ch. 24 rows checked against BPHS (bphs.txt 1762-2069).

Read down the last column and the Ch. 24 pattern is the familiar one. When the Sun is lord of a strong house, the 1st, 4th, 9th, 10th or 11th, its presence in the 3rd is read as valour and happiness from siblings. When it is lord of a dusthana, the 6th, 8th or 12th, the same placement removes courage or sibling happiness. The Sun's own nature as a malefic in a growing house does not change from row to row; what changes is the lordship it carries in.

The table also contains two tensions worth naming. For Leo rising the Sun is the Lagna lord, and Sl. 3 gives the 1st lord in the 3rd lion-like valour, yet the Sun is debilitated in Libra. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 settles how to hold both: a planet gives full, half or a quarter of its effects according to its strength. For Gemini rising the Sun rules the 3rd from its own sign, which is Sl. 27's clean reading, but Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 still counts the 3rd among the troublesome lordships, at its mildest. For Aquarius rising the Sun is exalted, the strongest dignity in the table, and the Ch. 24 line for a 7th lord in the 3rd is about children, not courage. Dignity and lordship are separate readings, and the texts keep them separate.

Gemini rising: the one chart where the Sun is both occupant and owner

With Gemini rising, a Sun in the 3rd sits in Leo, its own sign. Saravali Ch. 34 would read a malefic in its own malefic sign as hard on co-born; BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 27 reads the 3rd lord in the 3rd as happiness through co-born; Ch. 34 calls the 3rd lordship mildly troublesome; and Ch. 14 Sl. 2 treats the 3rd lord in the 3rd with Mars as a good condition. The sources pull in different directions here, and this page does not pretend they agree.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading prints one line for each planet's house. For the Sun in the 3rd the engine picks the favourable sentence when two things hold: the Sun's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign, and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 3rd is never a dusthana, so for this placement the whole verdict rests on dignity.

Dignity is not just the sign. For any sign the Sun neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine works out the fivefold relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 between the Sun and that sign's lord. The natural half is fixed: the Moon, Mars and Jupiter are the Sun's friends, Venus and Saturn its enemies, and Mercury neutral. The temporary half is read from your chart. Sl. 56 makes a planet in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from another its temporary friend, and any other position a temporary enemy. The engine then combines the two. Only Friend or Great Friend becomes "Friendly sign"; a natural friend that is a temporary enemy comes out Neutral.

Worked through for every sign the Sun can occupy in the 3rd, that gives four groups.

  • Always favourable: Leo (Gemini rising), where the Sun is in its own sign or Moolatrikona, and Aries (Aquarius rising), where it is exalted.
  • Favourable only if the sign lord is well placed from the Sun: Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces (Taurus, Virgo, Libra and Capricorn rising). The Moon, Mars or Jupiter must sit in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the Sun. Anywhere else, including in the same sign as the Sun, the dignity drops to Neutral and the testing line is printed.
  • Favourable only if Mercury is in a neighbouring sign: Gemini and Virgo (Aries and Cancer rising). Mercury is a natural neutral, so the temporary half decides. Mercury never strays far from the Sun, so in practice it is either in the same sign (temporary enemy, giving Enemy sign) or in the sign before or after (temporary friend, giving Friendly sign).
  • Never favourable in this engine: Libra (Leo rising), the Sun's debilitation; Capricorn and Aquarius (Scorpio and Sagittarius rising), where Saturn is a natural enemy and the best the temporary half can do is lift it to Neutral; and Taurus (Pisces rising), where Venus is a natural enemy.

This is a narrower test than the texts use. It does not look at aspects, at the 3rd lord, at Mars, or at benefic company, all of which the sources ask for. A "testing" line here means the Sun lacks dignity, not that a classical condition for harm has been met, and a "favourable" line means the Sun has dignity, not that every condition in Ch. 14 is satisfied. The checks the engine skips are listed further down so you can do them by hand.

A related verdict appears in the dasha panel. dashaQuality() reads the Sun as challenging if it is debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a dusthana; good only if it is exalted, Moolatrikona or in its own sign; and neutral otherwise. So a Sun in a friendly sign in the 3rd prints a favourable house line and a neutral dasha quality at the same time. The Sun Mahadasha page explains that middle band.

The Sun's aspect from the 3rd

Every planet aspects the 7th sign from itself in full, and BPHS Ch. 26 gives special full aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. The Sun therefore has one full aspect, and from the 3rd it falls on the 9th house. The engine's aspectedHouses() returns exactly that: the 9th and nothing else.

The 9th is the house of dharma, fortune and the father, and the Sun is the natural significator of the father; BPHS Ch. 32 reads the 9th from the Sun for him. A Sun in the 3rd therefore touches the father's house by aspect while sitting in the siblings' house. Because the Sun is a malefic, this engine counts its aspect against any planet in the 9th when it scores Shad Bala, which the Shad Bala calculator shows. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for the Sun aspecting the 9th from the 3rd. The Bhrigu Sutras commentator (p. 20) only argues that benefic influence on a Sun in the 3rd reaches the 9th by this aspect and favours fortune; that is his reasoning, not a sutra. For what the house holds, see the 9th house.

Mars, the 3rd lord and the second opinions

Because Ch. 14 judges the 3rd through its lord and Mars, a reading of the Sun in the 3rd is incomplete without both. Find the planet ruling the sign in your 3rd (with the Sun there, it is the sign's lord from the table above) and see whether it sits in an angle, a trine or exaltation, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th. Then do the same for Mars. The Mars in the 3rd house page is the fullest case of the significator in its own house.

BPHS Ch. 7 reads happiness through co-born from the Drekkana, the third division of each sign, which the Drekkana (D3) calculator computes. The Arudha of the 3rd, which BPHS Ch. 29 calls Vikram or Bhratru Pada, appears in the Bhava Padas calculator, and the Bhratru Karaka among the Chara Karakas. These are second opinions on sibling matters. None of them is driven by the Sun's placement, and the 3rd house page explains each.

One named combination uses a malefic in the 3rd directly. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 17 reads: if the 1st, 2nd and 4th houses are occupied by benefics while a malefic is in the 3rd, "one will become a king, or equal to a king". A Sun in the 3rd meets the malefic half; the benefic half needs three other houses filled. It is named here because it is the strongest classical statement that a hard planet in this house can be an asset.

Timing: when the placement comes forward

The Sun's own periods

The Sun's Vimshottari Mahadasha lasts six years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15), and the Sun also runs an Antardasha inside every other Mahadasha. Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 give the test that applies to every dasha lord: favourable in the Lagna, in exaltation, own or a "Shant" (friendly) sign; unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th, in debilitation or in an inimical sign. That is close to the test the engine applies to the house line. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates of your Sun periods.

BPHS Ch. 48 adds a rule written for exactly this placement. Sl. 18-20 say the dashas of the 3rd, 6th and 11th lords, of grahas placed in those houses, and of grahas joined with them "will prove unfavourable". A Sun in the 3rd is a graha placed there. Yet the sub-period chapters, Ch. 52 to 60, list the 3rd again and again alongside the angles, trines and the 11th as a good placement for an Antardasha lord, almost always with a strength or dignity condition attached. The two statements sit in one book. BPHS does not reconcile them beyond attaching the condition, and neither does this one.

In this app, outside the Sun's own periods the Kundali sheet shows the Sun's house line prefixed "When Sun's own Dasha or Antardasha is active". When the Sun is the running Mahadasha or Antardasha lord, that line is replaced by the dasha reading for the Sun. The theme BPHS Ch. 48 gives the Sun's lordship, as this app words it, depends on your rising sign; for Gemini rising, where the Sun rules the 3rd, it reads "effort-heavy, generally more testing; courage and sibling matters".

The Sun passing through the 3rd from your Moon

A different frame applies to transits. The Gochar calculator counts houses from the natal Moon, not from the Ascendant. Following the source it cites (Kannan p. 117), a natural malefic in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th or 11th from the Moon is read as favourable, "real gains through direct effort", and in the 1st, 4th, 8th or 12th as testing. The Sun takes about thirty days to cross a sign, so it passes through the 3rd from your Moon for roughly a month every year. That transit is not the same thing as a natal Sun in the 3rd house, and the two can point in opposite directions in the same chart.

Why Friendly sign: Pisces belongs to Jupiter, a natural friend of the Sun. Jupiter in Gemini is the 4th sign from the Sun's Pisces, a temporary-friend position, so the fivefold result is Great Friend and the engine prints the favourable line. Had Jupiter been in Pisces with the Sun, or in Virgo opposite it, the temporary half would have been enmity, the result Neutral, and the same Sun in the same house would have printed the testing line.

What the engine does not weigh, the texts would. With Capricorn rising the Sun rules Leo, the 8th house, so Ch. 24 Sl. 87 applies: the 8th lord in the 3rd, without happiness from siblings and lacking helpers. The 3rd lord, Jupiter, sits in the 6th, which is the weak position the Bhrigu Sutras name for sibling matters. Mars, the significator, is in the 1st, an angle, with Saturn, which Ch. 14 Sl. 6 counts in its favour and Sl. 3's malefic company counts against. The Sun's one aspect falls on the 9th, onto the Moon. So the engine's favourable line, which rests on dignity alone, and the classical conditions point in different directions here. That is a normal outcome, and it is the reason to read the conditions rather than the line.

Ninety minutes earlier the same Sun, at nearly the same degree, falls in the 4th house of a Sagittarius Ascendant. The Sun in the 4th house page works through that chart, which shows how much of a house reading comes from the birth time.

Checking a Sun in the 3rd in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement. Run the birth chart calculator with an accurate birth time and place. The Sun is in the 3rd if it occupies the third sign from your Ascendant. Near a sign boundary, a few minutes of birth time can move the Ascendant and the house with it.
  2. Find the Sun's sign and dignity. Exalted in Aries, own sign in Leo, debilitated in Libra. In any other sign, note where that sign's lord sits from the Sun: the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign makes it a temporary friend.
  3. Find the house the Sun rules, the house where Leo falls, and read that lord's row in BPHS Ch. 24 from the table above.
  4. Find the 3rd lord and Mars. Are they in an angle, a trine or exaltation (Ch. 14 Sl. 6), or in the 6th, 8th or 12th? Are they together in the 8th (Sl. 5)?
  5. Look for a benefic. Does Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or the Moon join or aspect the 3rd house (Ch. 14 Sl. 1), or join the Sun (Bhrigu Sutras)?
  6. Weigh strength before believing any single verse, as Ch. 14 Sl. 15 and Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 require. The Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators give two measures.
  7. Look up when the Sun's Mahadasha and Antardashas run, and keep transit readings, which count from the Moon, separate from this natal one.

The methodology page explains how positions are computed and where their limits are, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.

Common misreadings

  • "A Sun in the 3rd means a sibling will be harmed." BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 14 says so in one line and Sl. 15 immediately requires strength to be weighed first. The Bhrigu Sutras add that a benefic, or a strong 3rd lord, protects siblings. No single placement settles it, and this app computes nothing about siblings' lives.
  • "A malefic in the 3rd is bad for me." For the person, the sources say nearly the opposite. Saravali gives valour, strength and victory over opponents, and the 3rd is a growing house where malefics are welcome.
  • "The 3rd house is the Sun's best house." Saravali is equally kind to the Sun in the 6th, 10th and 11th, and the Sun's directional strength peaks in the 10th, not the 3rd.
  • "My Sun is in a friendly sign, so the placement is strong." In this engine a friendly sign is Friendly only if the sign's lord also sits in a temporary-friend position from the Sun. The same sign can read Neutral in another chart.
  • "Favourable in the app means every classical condition is met." The engine tests dignity and house only. The 3rd lord, Mars, aspects and benefic company are left to you.
  • "The 3rd from my Moon in the transit report is my 3rd house." Transits here are counted from the Moon, natal houses from the Ascendant. They are different frames.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sun in the 3rd house good or bad?
For the person, the sources lean favourable: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 4 gives valour, strength, popularity, learning and victory over opponents, and the Bhrigu Sutras a brave fighter with a good name. For siblings the same verses lean the other way. Every source makes the outcome depend on strength, the 3rd lord and benefic company.
Why do malefics do well in the 3rd house?
The 3rd is an Upachaya, one of the four growing houses with the 6th, 10th and 11th (BPHS Ch. 7 and Ch. 32). The Bhrigu Sutras commentary calls it an accepted principle that natural malefics placed in these houses give beneficial results, and Saravali's Sun-in-house verses are kindest to exactly those four houses.
Does the Sun in the 3rd say anything about elder or younger siblings?
BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 14 names elder siblings for the Sun, while Ch. 32 makes the 3rd the house of younger ones. Sl. 15 requires strength to be weighed before announcing anything. This app does not compute sibling outcomes or numbers.
Why does the app call my Sun in the 3rd favourable when the texts mention losing siblings?
The app's line is chosen by the Sun's dignity and whether the house is a dusthana. It speaks to courage and initiative, the side of the reading the texts give the person. It deliberately words the sibling side as strain under affliction and makes no claim about anyone's survival.
Which rising signs give the strongest Sun in the 3rd?
By dignity, Aquarius rising (Sun exalted in Aries) and Gemini rising (Sun in its own Leo). By lordship, BPHS Ch. 24 reads the Sun best in the 3rd when it rules the 1st, 4th, 9th, 10th or 11th. The two measures do not coincide; see the rising-sign table above and the guide to yogas for how combinations are weighed.
What does the Sun aspect from the 3rd house?
Only the 9th house, by its full 7th-sign aspect; the Sun has no special aspects. The 9th is the house of fortune and the father. None of BPHS, Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras gives a separate verse for that aspect.
When will a Sun in the 3rd show its effects?
Classically, in the Sun's own Mahadasha (six years) and its Antardashas. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 calls the dashas of grahas placed in the 3rd unfavourable, while the sub-period chapters list the 3rd as a good position when the lord is strong. This app shows when those periods run; it does not predict events in them.
Is the Sun in the 3rd the same as the Sun transiting my 3rd house?
No. The natal placement is counted from the Ascendant and lasts a lifetime. The transit is counted from the natal Moon in this app and lasts about a month each year. A malefic in the 3rd from the Moon is read as favourable in the Gochar calculator.
