A Sun in the 2nd house is a placement the classical texts do not agree on, and that disagreement is the most useful thing to know about it. Bhrigu Sutras, Saravali and the BPHS chapter on the 2nd house treat the Sun as a malefic sitting in the house of wealth and speech, and read strain into it. A later BPHS chapter says, in one sentence, that a Sun in the 2nd which Saturn does not aspect brings riches and fame. Between those readings sit the conditions that decide which one a chart meets: the Sun's sign, the house it rules from your Lagna, who aspects it, who sits with it, and when its periods run.
This page sets out what each text says, with chapter and sloka, where they part ways, and how this app's engine turns the placement into the lines you see in your own chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone. For the Sun as a graha, start with the Sun in Vedic astrology; for the house itself, the 2nd house, Dhana Bhava.
The 2nd house, as the texts define it
BPHS Ch. 11 Sloka 3 gives Dhan Bhava wealth, grains (food), family, death, enemies, metals and precious stones. Bhrigu Sutras is broader: money, fortune, gain and loss, resources, jewellery and securities, speech, vision and the right eye, memory, imagination, the tongue, teeth, nose and chin, and family members. It adds that many learned writers count education here too, and calls the 2nd a maraka sthana.
In this app the 2nd house is titled "Wealth & speech", glossed "money, family, voice". Its row in your Kundali is read through the house's lord - which planet rules the sign on the 2nd, where it sits, in what dignity - not through the Sun. So "the Sun is in my 2nd" and "my 2nd house looks well-supported" are separate readings that can point in different directions on the same chart. Keeping them apart is the first step.
The maraka label comes from BPHS Ch. 44 Sloka 2-5: the 3rd and 8th are houses of longevity, the 12th from each of them - the 2nd and the 7th - are Marak Bhavas, and the 2nd is the more powerful. That is one piece of a longevity calculation. This app computes no longevity and no death timing, and the term returns under common misreadings below.
What the Sun brings into the house
BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 11 lists the Sun among the natural malefics, with Saturn, Mars, the waning Moon, Rahu and Ketu, and Ch. 34 Sloka 8-10 repeats it. Ch. 3 Sloka 14-15 gives the Sun and Moon royal status, which explains the motif running through nearly every text on this placement: the king, the government or authority as the channel through which money comes or goes.
For a malefic in this house the general rules point one way. BPHS Ch. 13 Sloka 1-2: a benefic in Dhan Bhava gives wealth, a malefic destroys it. Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 86-87: malefics harm the houses they occupy, except the 6th, 8th and 12th, benefics increase them, and results can be maximum, medium or nil by Yoga Karaka strength, relationships, aspects and exaltation or debilitation. This engine lists the Sun among its malefics and treats only the 6th, 8th and 12th as dusthanas, so the reversal that makes a malefic useful in an evil house never applies to the 2nd.
Not every voice in the corpus accepts the label. The modern commentator in Bhrigu Sutras, writing on the Sun in the 1st house, argues that the source of light and life should not be called a malefic, while granting that it is hot and cruel.
What Bhrigu Sutras says: Sutras 22-32
The Sun chapter gives the 2nd house eleven sutras. Paraphrased in order, conditions intact:
- The native has complaints of the mouth. Like every body association on this page, this is what the text says, not medical advice.
- In the 25th year he incurs the government's displeasure and loses wealth - but not if the Sun is in Aries, its exaltation, or Leo, its own sign.
- Joined by a malefic: trouble with the eyes, little knowledge of the shastras, poor health.
- Aspected by benefics: protected from those effects, and wealthy.
- With Mercury: the native stammers.
- If the 2nd lord is exalted: brief, clear speech, learning, good eyesight, and a Raja Yoga that brings name, fame and wealth.
The commentary explains each line. The 2nd signifies the mouth, so an afflicted Sun shows there; the 2nd signifies wealth and the Sun signifies government, so the affliction becomes loss through government. On the age he is candid: the 25th year "can be verified only by practical experience." The effect does not arise, he adds, when benefics such as Jupiter and Venus aspect the Sun and the house.
Two of his qualifications narrow the text further. Speech suffers only if Mercury is actually combust, which it often is because it travels close to the Sun; otherwise the stammer line does not apply. And the Raja Yoga needs the exalted 2nd lord in a house other than the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th. He also softens the benefic clause: a benefic aspect does not erase a malefic affliction, but wealth can still come if the benefic influence outweighs it. The book's own contents describe the chapter as covering "dispositions when Sun in spite of being a malefic gives very beneficial results", and for this house those dispositions are named.
The four other texts Bhrigu Sutras quotes
| Text | Its reading of the Sun in the 2nd (as summarised in Bhrigu Sutras) |
|---|---|
| Brihat Jatak | Immensely rich, but deprived of wealth by a king; trouble in the face. |
| Phaldeepika | Without learning, modesty or wealth; a defect in speech. |
| Saravali | Has cattle and servants; disease of the mouth; without fame or comforts; acquires wealth from the king or from thieves by questionable means. |
| Chamatkar Chintamani | Learned; owns cows, horses and elephants; spends on good causes; quarrels with family on account of the spouse; efforts to acquire wealth go in vain. |
Three of the five readings, counting Bhrigu Sutras, route money through the king. Two also find something to praise: Brihat Jatak starts from great riches before the loss, and Chamatkar Chintamani credits learning and generosity while denying that effort turns into wealth. The texts share a vocabulary - speech, face, family, royal displeasure - more than they share a verdict.
Saravali in its own translation, and a disagreement about direction
The corpus also holds Saravali itself. Ch. 30 Sloka 3 there reads: servants and quadrupeds, facial diseases, deprived of happiness and wealth, and losing money through royal displeasure or through thieves. Bhrigu Sutras' summary of the same sloka has the native acquiring wealth from the king or from thieves.
The two English renderings send the money in opposite directions, and nothing in an English corpus can settle which is closer to Kalyana Varma's Sanskrit. This page reports both and leans on neither.
BPHS: two chapters, two answers
BPHS addresses this placement twice. Implicitly, through Ch. 13 Sloka 1-2: a malefic in Dhan Bhava destroys wealth, and the Sun is a malefic. Explicitly, in Ch. 42, "Combinations for Penury", Sloka 16-18, which gives three poverty yogas with their cancellations. Mars and Saturn together in Dhan destroy wealth, unless Mercury aspects them, when there is great wealth. The Sun in Dhan aspected by Saturn causes penury; the Sun in Dhan not aspected by Saturn brings riches and fame. The same poverty applies to Saturn in Dhan aspected by the Sun.
Ch. 42 is the only place BPHS names this placement outright, and it makes Saturn the switch. A Sun in the 2nd with no Saturn aspect is, by the letter of that sloka, a wealth-and-fame placement - the opposite of the default Ch. 13 implies.
This app implements the sloka literally. Whenever your Sun is in the 2nd, its dosha check adds a row called "Dhan Bhava Caution (Sun)". If Saturn aspects the 2nd, the row is present, graded Mild, and reads "classically read as a period calling for financial caution rather than a fixed loss." If not, it is absent and reads "classically read as a genuinely favourable placement for wealth and reputation." The word penury is not used. The Mangal Dosha calculator runs the whole dosha check, so its table shows this row beside Mangal and Kaal Sarp.
Saturn aspects the 2nd in this engine from the 12th (its 3rd-house aspect), the 8th (the 7th aspect every planet casts) and the 5th (its 10th-house aspect). Saturn sitting in the 2nd beside the Sun is a conjunction, not an aspect; neither the sloka nor the engine covers it.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: an afflicted Sun here shows in speech, the mouth and face, and the eyes (Bhrigu Sutras, Brihat Jatak, Phaldeepika, Saravali).
- Agreed: the channel is authority. Bhrigu Sutras, Brihat Jatak and Saravali, in both renderings, put the king or government between the native and his money.
- Agreed: benefic influence changes the outcome. Bhrigu Sutras' benefic aspect, Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 86-87, and BPHS Ch. 11 Sloka 14-16, which predicts prosperity for a house joined or aspected by a benefic.
- Disputed: the default. BPHS Ch. 13, Saravali Ch. 30 and Phaldeepika lean to loss; BPHS Ch. 42 gives riches and fame unless Saturn aspects; Brihat Jatak gives great wealth, then its loss.
- Disputed: the rescue. For Bhrigu Sutras it is an Aries or Leo Sun and benefic aspect; for BPHS Ch. 42 only the absence of Saturn's aspect. A Leo Sun aspected by Saturn is spared by one rule and condemned by the other.
- Only Bhrigu Sutras gives an age, and its own commentator says the age can be checked only by experience.
How the Sun's sign changes the reading
Bhrigu Sutras makes the sign decisive in one place: no 25th-year loss in Aries or Leo. BPHS Ch. 7 Sloka 9-12 states the principle in its twenty-point Vimshopak strength: full strength in exaltation or own sign, none in the 7th sign from exaltation, which for the Sun is Libra. The Vimshopaka Bala calculator scores the Sun on that scale across sixteen divisional charts.
This app's dignity function makes the Sun Exalted in Aries, Moolatrikona in Leo from 0 to 20 degrees, own sign in the rest of Leo, and Debilitated in Libra. Every other sign is judged by the Sun's fivefold relationship with its lord: natural friendship (friends Moon, Mars, Jupiter; enemies Saturn, Venus; Mercury neutral) combined with the temporary relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 56, read from where the Sun and that lord actually sit in your chart: a lord 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from the Sun is a temporary friend, anywhere else a temporary enemy. So for nine of the twelve signs the label depends on a second planet. Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun and Venus about 48, which narrows their cases.
| Sun's sign | Lagna when this sign is the 2nd | Dignity in this engine | Planet-row verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Pisces | Exalted | Favourable |
| Taurus | Aries | Enemy sign with Venus in Taurus too; otherwise neutral | More testing |
| Gemini | Taurus | Enemy sign with Mercury in Gemini too; friendly with Mercury in Taurus or Cancer | Testing or favourable |
| Cancer | Gemini | Friendly with the Moon 2nd-4th or 10th-12th from the Sun; otherwise neutral | Favourable or testing |
| Leo | Cancer | Moolatrikona to 20 deg, then own sign | Favourable |
| Virgo | Leo | Enemy sign with Mercury in Virgo too; friendly with Mercury in Leo or Libra | Testing or favourable |
| Libra | Virgo | Debilitated | More testing |
| Scorpio | Libra | Friendly with Mars 2nd-4th or 10th-12th from the Sun; otherwise neutral | Favourable or testing |
| Sagittarius | Scorpio | Friendly with Jupiter 2nd-4th or 10th-12th from the Sun; otherwise neutral | Favourable or testing |
| Capricorn | Sagittarius | Neutral with Saturn 2nd-4th or 10th-12th from the Sun; otherwise enemy | More testing |
| Aquarius | Capricorn | Neutral with Saturn 2nd-4th or 10th-12th from the Sun; otherwise enemy | More testing |
| Pisces | Aquarius | Friendly with Jupiter 2nd-4th or 10th-12th from the Sun; otherwise neutral | Favourable or testing |
The verdict column is the function behind the planet rows on your Kundali page. It calls a placement favourable when the planet is exalted, Moolatrikona, own sign or friendly, and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 2nd never is, so a 2nd-house Sun's verdict depends on its sign and its sign lord: two signs always favourable, four always more testing (a neutral sign is not enough), and six that turn on where the lord sits. The favourable sentence ends "tending toward clear speech and real wealth - capable of forming genuine Raja Yoga when Sun rules a good house here"; the testing one, "tending toward real financial and speech difficulties under affliction". Both paraphrase the Bhrigu Sutras chapter with the disease lines and the age left out, and neither looks at aspects, conjunctions or lordship. Those live in other rows, which is why one chart can show a favourable planet row and a present caution together.
Your Lagna decides what the Sun rules
With whole-sign houses, a Sun in the 2nd means the Lagna is the sign just behind the Sun's. The Sun rules only Leo, so the Lagna fixes the house it lords over. BPHS Ch. 24 gives each house lord's effects in each house, so the sloka that applies is "lord of that house in Dhan Bhava"; Ch. 34 gives the Sun's functional role for each rising sign. Confirm your Lagna with the Lagna calculator.
| Lagna | Sun in (dignity) | Sun rules (BPHS Ch. 24 sloka) | Sun's role (BPHS Ch. 34) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Taurus (enemy or neutral) | 5th (Sl. 50) | Auspicious (Sl. 19-22) |
| Taurus | Gemini (enemy or friendly) | 4th (Sl. 38) | Auspicious (Sl. 23-24) |
| Gemini | Cancer (friendly or neutral) | 3rd (Sl. 26) | Malefic (Sl. 25-26) |
| Cancer | Leo (own) | 2nd (Sl. 14) | Killer, by association (Sl. 27-28) |
| Leo | Virgo (enemy or friendly) | 1st (Sl. 2) | Auspicious (Sl. 29-30) |
| Virgo | Libra (debilitated) | 12th (Sl. 134) | Depends on association (Sl. 31-32) |
| Libra | Scorpio (friendly or neutral) | 11th (Sl. 122) | Malefic (Sl. 33-34) |
| Scorpio | Sagittarius (friendly or neutral) | 10th (Sl. 110) | Yoga Karaka (Sl. 35-36) |
| Sagittarius | Capricorn (enemy or neutral) | 9th (Sl. 98) | Auspicious; can confer a Yoga (Sl. 37-38) |
| Capricorn | Aquarius (enemy or neutral) | 8th (Sl. 86) | Neutral (Sl. 39-40) |
| Aquarius | Pisces (friendly or neutral) | 7th (Sl. 74) | Killer (Sl. 41-42) |
| Pisces | Aries (exalted) | 6th (Sl. 62) | Malefic (Sl. 43-44) |
Each Lagna in turn below: the Ch. 24 reading in paraphrase, the Ch. 34 role, and, where it touches speech, wealth, food or family, Saravali Ch. 22's line for the Sun in that sign. Saravali writes those sign lines without reference to any house; they appear here only because the 2nd is where speech and money are read. Ch. 24's clauses about wives (re-checked 2026-10-09 against bphs.txt 1759-2066) are kept, as the text's statements and not forecasts; Saravali's sign lines are used only where they touch the 2nd house's subjects.
Aries Lagna: Sun in Taurus, lord of the 5th
Ch. 24 Sloka 50: the 5th lord in Dhan gives children and wealth, makes the native head of a household, honourable and famous. Ch. 34 Sloka 2-7 calls the 5th and 9th houses specially for wealth, and Sloka 19-22 names the Sun auspicious for Aries. Against that, the engine reads an enemy sign if Venus shares Taurus and neutral otherwise - more testing either way. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 10-11 gives the Sun in Taurus troubles of the face and eyes alongside eatables, robes and a knowledge of music.
Taurus Lagna: Sun in Gemini, lord of the 4th
Ch. 24 Sloka 38: pleasures, wealth of every kind, family life and honour, with a cunning disposition. Ch. 34 Sloka 23-24: the Sun is auspicious for Taurus. The engine reads an enemy sign only if Mercury is in Gemini too; with Mercury in Taurus or Cancer it reads friendly. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 18-19 is generous to the Sun in Gemini: sweet in speech, exceedingly affluent, liberal and skilful.
Gemini Lagna: Sun in Cancer, lord of the 3rd
Lordship and dignity point opposite ways. Ch. 24 Sloka 26 is the bleakest of the twelve: low in courage and effort, unhappy, with an eye on others' wives and others' wealth. Ch. 34 Sloka 2-7 says a graha owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, and Sloka 25-26 names the Sun a malefic for Gemini. Yet when the Moon sits 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from the Sun, Cancer reads friendly and the planet row favourable; elsewhere it is neutral. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 26-27 calls the Sun in Cancer eloquent and honourable.
Cancer Lagna: Sun in Leo, lord of the 2nd
The only Lagna where the Sun is in its own house. Ch. 24 Sloka 14: wealthy and proud, with two or more wives, and bereft of progeny. Ch. 13 Sloka 1-2 says a 2nd lord in the 2nd promotes wealth, and Sloka 10 that a 2nd lord in its own sign looks after his people, helps others and becomes famous. Bhrigu Sutras exempts a Leo Sun from the 25th-year loss. Ch. 34 Sloka 27-28 lists the Sun among the killers for Cancer, acting by association - the maraka role discussed below. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 34-35: talkative, plentiful in wealth, famous.
Leo Lagna: Sun in Virgo, lord of the 1st
Ch. 24 Sloka 2: the Lagna lord in Dhan is gainful, scholarly, happy, endowed with good qualities, religious and honourable, with many wives. Ch. 34 Sloka 29-30: auspicious for Leo. Virgo is friendly when Mercury sits in Leo or Libra, but an enemy sign when Mercury shares Virgo, as in Chart A below. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 42-43: a scholar and expert writer who speaks softly and kindly. This is also the Lagna where the 2nd lord, Mercury, can be exalted (below 15 degrees) in the very sign the Sun occupies - see the Raja Yoga section.
Virgo Lagna: Sun in Libra, lord of the 12th
The debilitated case. Ch. 24 Sloka 134: spends on inauspicious things, yet religious, sweet-spoken and happy. Ch. 34 Sloka 31-32: the Sun's role for Virgo depends on its association. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 44-45 gives the Sun in Libra heavy expenditure, a living from gold and metals, and royal contempt, echoing the government motif. The planet row reads more testing, and BPHS Ch. 47 and Ch. 52 also read the Sun's own periods as adverse here.
Libra Lagna: Sun in Scorpio, lord of the 11th
Ch. 24 Sloka 122: every kind of wealth and accomplishment, charity and lasting happiness. Ch. 34 Sloka 33-34 names the Sun a malefic for Libra, in line with its rule on 11th lords, so the house reading and the lordship nature disagree. If Mars, the 2nd lord, sits in Leo at the same time, the 2nd and 11th lords have exchanged signs, which BPHS Ch. 13 Sloka 4 names a wealth combination. This app's Parivarthana check flags the exchange but keeps its "strongly favourable" wording for exchanges between angle and trine lords, which this is not. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 46-47, on money, calls the Sun in Scorpio a miser.
Scorpio Lagna: Sun in Sagittarius, lord of the 10th
Ch. 24 Sloka 110: wealthy, virtuous, honoured by the king, charitable, happy through the father. Ch. 34 Sloka 35-36 names the Sun and Moon Yoga Karakas for Scorpio, and Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, pp. 29-30) observes that a Yoga Karaka in the 2nd yields excellent results. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 48-49: wealthy, dear to the king, learned, helpful to relatives. The Yoga Karaka panel on your Kundali lists the Sun, with its sign and house, for this Lagna.
Sagittarius Lagna: Sun in Capricorn, lord of the 9th
Ch. 24 Sloka 98: a scholar, dear to all, wealthy, sensuous, with happiness from wife and sons. Ch. 34 counts the 9th as specially for wealth (Sloka 2-7) and calls the Sun auspicious for Sagittarius and, with Mercury, able to confer a Yoga (Sloka 37-38); the engine lists both as Yoga Karakas. Against all that, Capricorn is an enemy sign unless Saturn is 2nd-4th or 10th-12th from the Sun, and even then only neutral, so the planet row reads more testing. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 56-57 gives the Sun in Capricorn greed and losses through conflict with relatives. Worked Chart B below is this Lagna.
Capricorn Lagna: Sun in Aquarius, lord of the 8th
Ch. 24 Sloka 86: little bodily vigour, little wealth, lost wealth not regained. Ch. 34 softens the lordship twice: Sloka 2-7 says 8th lordship is not evil for the Sun and Moon, and Sloka 39-40 calls the Sun neutral for Capricorn. The engine reads an enemy sign, or neutral with Saturn 2nd-4th or 10th-12th from the Sun. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 64-65: little wealth, miserliness.
Aquarius Lagna: Sun in Pisces, lord of the 7th
Ch. 24 Sloka 74: many wives, wealth through the wife, inclined to procrastinate. Ch. 34 Sloka 41-42 lists the Sun among the killers for Aquarius, since it rules the 7th, the other Marak Bhava. Pisces is friendly with Jupiter 2nd-4th or 10th-12th from the Sun, otherwise neutral. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 66-67: a tendency to amass, wealth including from trade by sea or river, and eloquent speech, though the same line doubts the speaker's truthfulness. If Jupiter, the 2nd lord, joins the Sun in Pisces, BPHS Ch. 13 Sloka 3 adds a wealth indication, though the engine then reads Pisces neutral, since a lord in the Sun's own sign is a temporary enemy.
Pisces Lagna: Sun in Aries, lord of the 6th
The exalted case. Ch. 24 Sloka 62 is kind to a 6th lord in the 2nd: adventurous, famous among his people, living in other lands, a skilful speaker. Ch. 34 Sloka 43-44 names the Sun a malefic for Pisces. Bhrigu Sutras exempts an Aries Sun from the 25th-year loss, and the planet row reads favourable. Saravali Ch. 22 Sloka 2-3: comments on the meaning of the shastras, famous in the arts, attached to duty.
The Raja Yoga condition, read correctly
The Raja Yoga in Bhrigu Sutras' 2nd-house sutras is not about the Sun. It needs the lord of the 2nd exalted, and the commentator adds: outside the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th. The app's one-line reading compresses this to "when Sun rules a good house here", so it is worth working out what the rule asks of a chart whose Sun is in the 2nd. The Sun is the 2nd lord only for a Cancer Lagna, and then it sits in Leo, its own sign, not its exaltation. For every other Lagna the condition falls on another planet.
| Lagna | 2nd lord exalted in | Lands in house | With the Sun in the 2nd |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus in Pisces | 12th | Possible, but excluded by the commentator |
| Taurus | Mercury in Virgo | 5th | Impossible: Mercury cannot be that far from the Sun |
| Gemini | Moon in Taurus | 12th | Possible, but excluded by the commentator |
| Cancer | The Sun itself | - | Does not arise: the Sun is in Leo |
| Leo | Mercury in Virgo | 2nd | Possible: Mercury beside the Sun |
| Virgo | Venus in Pisces | 7th | Impossible: Venus cannot be that far from the Sun |
| Libra | Mars in Capricorn | 4th | Possible |
| Scorpio | Jupiter in Cancer | 9th | Possible |
| Sagittarius | Saturn in Libra | 11th | Possible |
| Capricorn | Saturn in Libra | 10th | Possible |
| Aquarius | Jupiter in Cancer | 6th | Possible, but excluded by the commentator |
| Pisces | Mars in Capricorn | 11th | Possible |
The two impossible rows are astronomy, not interpretation. Mercury and Venus never stray far from the Sun: run through this app's own astronomy every two days from 1950 to 2049, Mercury was never more than 27.79 degrees away and Venus never more than 47.21. A Mercury in Virgo with the Sun in Gemini needs at least 60 degrees; a Venus in Pisces with the Sun in Libra needs at least 120.
This app does not run Bhrigu Sutras' rule as a named yoga, but you can read it off your Kundali: the 2nd-house row names the 2nd lord, its sign and its house, and an exalted lord shows there as exalted. BPHS reaches a similar place by another road: Ch. 13 Sloka 10 says a 2nd lord in its own sign or exaltation looks after his people, helps others and becomes famous.
Aspects and company: who can reach a 2nd-house Sun
In this engine every graha aspects the 7th house from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th. Counted back from the 2nd: any planet in the 8th aspects a 2nd-house Sun; Mars also from the 11th and 7th, Jupiter from the 10th and 6th, Saturn from the 12th and 5th.
Mercury and Venus can never do it by aspect. The 8th house is at least 150 degrees from a 2nd-house Sun, far beyond either planet's reach, so their influence on this placement is a conjunction in the same sign or nothing. Bhrigu Sutras' commentator names Jupiter and Venus as the protecting benefics; Venus can only help from inside the 2nd itself.
Saturn
Saturn is BPHS Ch. 42's switch, flagged by the engine as above. Saravali Ch. 22 reads Saturn's aspect on the Sun as unfavourable in most signs, with one exception: on a Sun in Capricorn or Aquarius, the native destroys his enemies and prospers through royal honours (Sloka 58-63). Those are the Sun-in-2nd placements for Sagittarius and Capricorn Lagnas, where the two texts therefore disagree. And Ch. 42's Mars-and-Saturn rule is reversed only by Mercury's aspect, which a Mercury tied to a 2nd-house Sun can never cast.
Jupiter
The clearest benefic aspect available here. Saravali Ch. 22 reads Jupiter's aspect on the Sun favourably in every group of signs - plenty of money in Mars's signs (Sloka 4-9), a king's minister in Venus's (Sloka 12-17), learning in Mercury's (Sloka 20-25), elephants, horses and wealth in Jupiter's own (Sloka 50-55), wide fame in Saturn's (Sloka 58-63). That is the benefic aspect Bhrigu Sutras means.
Mercury
Mercury shares the Sun's sign on 51.0 per cent of days from 1950 to 2049 in this engine, which marks it combust within 14 degrees of the Sun; on 64.4 per cent of those shared-sign days it was. So roughly a third of 2nd-house Suns with Mercury beside them have a Mercury that is not combust, and for those the stammer line does not apply even by the book's own reasoning. The birth-chart output shows the combust flag per planet.
Venus and the Moon
Venus is in the Sun's sign on 23.7 per cent of days, and inside this app's 10-degree combustion orb on 54.2 per cent of those. A Venus there is the benefic conjunction that Saravali Ch. 30 and BPHS Ch. 11 favour. For the Moon the evidence is modern: Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 147) quotes R. Santhanam that a Sun-Moon combination in the 2nd causes great financial strain.
The wealth division: Hora (D2)
BPHS Ch. 7 Sloka 1-8 gives wealth to the Hora. Ch. 6 Sloka 5-6 defines it: the first half of an odd sign is the Sun's Hora, the second half the Moon's, reversed for even signs. Ch. 7 Sloka 13-16 adds that the Sun gives pronounced effects in the Sun's Hora, which is powerful in an odd sign, and that effects run full, medium and nil at the beginning, middle and end of a Hora. The Hora (D2) calculator returns exactly this split for every graha.
For a 2nd-house Sun: in Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius or Aquarius it is in its own Hora from 0 to 15 degrees; in Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn or Pisces, from 15 to 30. The text treats this as one more layer to weigh, not a verdict.
Checking it in your own chart
All of this needs a chart with a Lagna, which means a birth time and a birthplace that resolves to coordinates. Without them there are no houses; what a missing birth time does explains what can still be read. The Sun Sign calculator gives the Sun's sidereal sign from the date alone, but not its house.
One sanity check costs nothing. A 2nd-house Sun is a birth before dawn: the Lagna must be the sign just behind the Sun, and that sign finishes rising before the Sun's own sign does. Swept minute by minute at New Delhi on the 1st and 15th of every month of 2026, this engine kept the Sun in the 2nd for 85 to 140 minutes, and the window closed anywhere from right at sunrise, when the Sun was in the first degree or two of its sign, to just over two hours before it, when the Sun was in its last degrees. An afternoon birth time with a 2nd-house Sun means the time or the place needs checking.
- Cast the chart with the Birth Chart calculator and confirm the Sun's house is 2. Note its sign and degree, and who shares its sign.
- Find the Sun's dignity in the sign table. Your Kundali's Sun row gives the same verdict sentence.
- Find what the Sun rules in the Lagna table and read the matching BPHS Ch. 24 note.
- Check Saturn: in your 5th, 8th or 12th, BPHS Ch. 42's condition is met. The dosha check shows the Dhan Bhava row either way.
- Check Jupiter: in your 6th, 8th or 10th it aspects the 2nd. Jupiter, Venus or the Moon in the 2nd is a conjunction instead.
- If Mercury shares the Sun's sign, read its combust flag before reading anything into the stammer line.
- Read your Kundali's 2nd-house row for the 2nd lord's sign and house - Bhrigu Sutras' Raja Yoga condition.
- Check the Sun's Hora with the Hora calculator and its strength with the Shad Bala calculator, since Ch. 24 Sloka 145-148 scales every lordship effect by strength.
- Look at timing last, with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the timing section below.
The Yogas calculator lists the named combinations this engine detects. None is keyed to a 2nd-house Sun as such, but an exchange of signs involving the Sun, or a Kendra-Kona tie between the Sun and another lord, will appear there if your chart has one. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh those entries.
Two worked charts
Both are illustrative births, not real people, computed in this app's engine for New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E). They were chosen because they show the rules pulling against each other, which is the normal case.
Chart A: 20 September 1975, 04:15 IST
Leo rises at 7.3 degrees; the Sun is at 2.85 degrees of Virgo in the 2nd, an enemy sign, so the planet row reads classically more testing. Mercury, Virgo's lord, is naturally neutral to the Sun, and sitting in the same sign it is a temporary enemy (BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 56-58), which makes the compound relation enmity. The Sun is the Lagna lord (Ch. 24 Sloka 2) and auspicious for Leo (Ch. 34 Sloka 29-30). Mercury, the 2nd lord, is at 28.51 degrees of Virgo, past the 15-degree exaltation band, so BPHS and the engine's dignity label put it in its own sign and Bhrigu Sutras' Raja Yoga condition is not met by degree. The 2nd-house row reads the same degree: "Mercury rules your 2nd house and sits in Virgo (its own sign, house 2)". Mercury is 26 degrees from the Sun, not combust, so the stammer line does not apply.
Jupiter, retrograde in Pisces in the 8th, aspects the 2nd: the benefic aspect. Saturn in Cancer in the 12th aspects it too, so the Dhan Bhava Caution (Sun) row is present, graded Mild. The chart carries Bhrigu Sutras' protection and BPHS Ch. 42's caution at once. The Sun is in the first half of an even sign, so it sits in the Moon's Hora. Its Mahadasha runs June 2046 to June 2052 here, and with the Sun in the first ten degrees of its sign, BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 3-4 puts its effects at the start. The Career and Money engine scores the Sun Antardasha of October 2029 to October 2030 at 47 out of 100, neutral, and does not list it as an income window: "Sun rules none of your money houses, sits in your 2nd (Panapara), is in an enemy sign and sits on 23 Sarvashtakavarga bindus, below the classical average of 28." The windows it does list belong to Mars, in the 10th in a friendly sign: its Antardasha from June 2032 to August 2033 and its Mahadasha from 2062, both at 76.
Chart B: 20 January 1975, 05:25 IST
Sagittarius rises at 7.43 degrees; the Sun is at 5.79 degrees of Capricorn in the 2nd, an enemy sign, so the planet row reads classically more testing. Saturn, retrograde in Gemini in the 7th, does not aspect the 2nd, so the Dhan Bhava row is absent and reads "a genuinely favourable placement for wealth and reputation." The Sun rules the 9th (Ch. 24 Sloka 98), and for Sagittarius it and Mercury are the Yoga Karakas (Ch. 34 Sloka 37-38); the Yoga Karaka panel lists both, both in house 2. Mercury and Venus, at about 24 degrees of Capricorn, are 18 degrees from the Sun and outside both combustion orbs.
The Sun's Mahadasha ran from November 2003 to November 2009. By BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 5-6 an enemy-sign lord gives unfavourable results, the app's dasha reading for that lord is more testing, and the money engine scores the period neutral at 56 out of 100, below the bar for an income window. So the planet row says testing, the Ch. 42 row says genuinely favourable, and the Yoga Karaka panel puts the Sun among the chart's most useful planets. None is wrong; each is a different rule from a different chapter, and reading the placement means holding all three rather than picking the one you prefer.
Timing: when the placement speaks
A natal placement says what; the dashas say when. The Sun's Vimshottari Mahadasha lasts six years, and its own Antardasha within it 6 x 6/120 of a year, about three and a half months. How Mahadashas are built and how the sub-periods divide them cover the arithmetic; the Sun Mahadasha has its own page.
BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 5-6 gives the general test: a Dasha is favourable when its lord is in the Lagna, exalted, in its own or a friendly sign, and unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th, in debilitation or in an enemy's sign. This app's dasha reading applies exactly that test, so for a 2nd-house Sun it splits like the sign table. It also grades the period: good only for an exalted, Moolatrikona or own-sign Sun (Aries or Leo here), neutral for a friendly sign, challenging for an enemy sign or debilitation.
Ch. 47 Sloka 7-11 lists what a strong Sun's Dasha brings - wealth and honours from the government when the Sun is exalted, in its own sign, in an angle or the 11th, or joined by the 9th or 10th lord - and, directly relevant here, elephants and other wealth if the Sun is joined by the lord of Dhan. Sloka 12-15 gives the reverse for a debilitated Sun, a weak one in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or one joined by malefics: anxiety, loss of wealth, trouble from the government. A benefic aspect brings some relief; a malefic one does not.
Ch. 48 complicates the Dhan-lord line. Its Sloka 18-20 calls unfavourable the Dashas of grahas associated with the Marak lords in Dhan or Yuvati Bhava, so a Sun sitting in the 2nd with the 2nd lord collects a wealth line from Ch. 47 and an unfavourable one from Ch. 48. BPHS's own tie-breaker is strength: Ch. 47 Sloka 3-4 opens by saying Dasha effects follow the graha's strength.
Ch. 52 Sloka 1-3 covers the Sun's Antardasha inside its own Mahadasha: wealth and grain if the Sun is exalted, in its own sign, in the 11th, an angle or a trine; adverse if debilitated or in an inauspicious house or sign; medium elsewhere. The 2nd is not on the good list, so by the letter of the sloka only an Aries or Leo Sun earns the good reading. The same sloka adds a maraka warning, with a ritual remedy, when the Sun rules the 2nd or 7th - Cancer and Aquarius Lagnas. This app carries neither.
Ch. 47 Sloka 3-4 also times effects inside the period by decanate: a graha in the first third of its sign shows its results at the start of the Dasha, the middle third in the middle, the last third at the end, reversed for a retrograde graha. The Sun is never retrograde, so a 2nd-house Sun's degree reads straight off: 0 to 10 early, 10 to 20 mid-period, 20 to 30 late.
In the app, the Sun's planet row in your Kundali carries the line "When Sun's own Dasha or Antardasha is active:" followed by its house reading, and switches to the Ch. 47 dasha reading, badged active now, while a Sun period runs. While the Sun's Mahadasha runs, the dasha panel also names the house the Sun rules and that house's theme. The Career and Money calculator lists income windows only when a period lord rules, occupies or aspects the 2nd, 10th or 11th and also scores supportive or better. A 2nd-house Sun meets the first condition by occupation every time; whether its periods appear depends on the second, as the worked charts show. The Career and Money feature explains the scoring, and the Timing feature how dated windows are shown.
Bhrigu Sutras' 25th year is the only age any of these texts gives, and this app does not use it. For a yearly view it offers the Varshaphal instead: a chart cast for the moment each year when the Sun returns to its exact natal longitude. In every annual chart the Sun is back in its natal sign; which house it falls in that year depends on the annual Lagna.
Common misreadings
- "Sun in the 2nd means money trouble." One reading among several: BPHS Ch. 42 gives riches and fame unless Saturn aspects, Bhrigu Sutras exempts Aries and Leo, and Chamatkar Chintamani credits learning and generosity.
- "I will lose money to the government at 25." The age appears only in Bhrigu Sutras, is waived for an Aries or Leo Sun and under benefic aspect, and its own commentator calls it verifiable only by experience.
- "Maraka means death." In BPHS Ch. 44 the word belongs to a longevity calculation that first sorts a life into short, medium or long spans, and the same chapter says longevity cannot be judged before the age of 20. Lifted out of that calculation it predicts nothing, and this app does not use it.
- "The app says favourable, so my 2nd house is strong." The planet row judges the Sun by its sign; the 2nd-house row judges the house by its lord; Saturn's aspect is a third row. Each answers a different question.
- "My Sun sign tells me this." A Sun sign comes from the date; the Sun's house needs the birth time and place. Two people born on the same day share the first and usually not the second.
Related placements and pages
The Sun in the neighbouring houses reads very differently: the 1st, where the same texts discuss vitality and the eyes, and the 3rd, an upachaya house where a malefic Sun is classically more at home. The set continues with the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th.
Other grahas in the same house: the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. The three signs that decide most of this page are Aries, Leo and Libra. Every book cited here is listed on the Sources page, and how the chart is computed is on the Methodology page.
- Is the Sun in the 2nd house good or bad?
- Neither across the texts. BPHS Ch. 13 and Saravali Ch. 30 treat a malefic in the 2nd as a strain on wealth; BPHS Ch. 42 says the Sun there brings riches and fame unless Saturn aspects it; Bhrigu Sutras reads strain but lifts it for an Aries or Leo Sun, under benefic aspect, or with an exalted 2nd lord. Which conditions your chart meets decides the reading.
- What changes if Saturn aspects my 2nd-house Sun?
- BPHS Ch. 42 Sloka 16-18 reads it as penury, and its absence as riches and fame. This app shows the aspected case as a Dhan Bhava Caution (Sun), graded Mild and worded as a call for financial caution rather than a fixed loss. Saturn aspects the 2nd from your 5th, 8th or 12th; the dosha check shows the row.
- Is a Sun in Aries or Leo in the 2nd different?
- Yes, in every system here. Bhrigu Sutras exempts both from the 25th-year loss; this engine reads Aries as exalted and Leo as own sign or Moolatrikona; BPHS Ch. 52 gives the Sun's own sub-period a good reading in both. Aries means a Pisces Lagna, Leo a Cancer Lagna.
- What do the texts say about speech?
- Bhrigu Sutras gives a stammer when the Sun is with Mercury, which its commentator limits to a combust Mercury, and brief, clear speech when the 2nd lord is exalted. Phaldeepika gives a defect in speech. By sign, Saravali Ch. 22 calls the Sun sweet-spoken in Gemini and soft and kind in speech in Virgo.
- What do they say about family?
- BPHS Ch. 11 Sloka 3 puts family in this house. Chamatkar Chintamani, as quoted in Bhrigu Sutras, has the native quarrelling with family on account of the spouse; BPHS Ch. 24 gives a 4th lord in the 2nd family life and a 5th lord in the 2nd the headship of a household. Which applies depends on the Lagna.
- Can I tell if my Sun is in the 2nd without a birth time?
- No. The house needs the Lagna, and the Lagna needs time and place. What you can check is plausibility: a 2nd-house Sun is a pre-dawn birth, its window ending at or before sunrise. The Birth Chart calculator answers it once it has both.
- Is the Sun in the 2nd a Raja Yoga?
- Not by itself. The Raja Yoga in Bhrigu Sutras' 2nd-house sutras needs the 2nd lord exalted, outside the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th by the commentator's reading. With the Sun in the 2nd that is possible for Leo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Pisces Lagnas, and impossible for Taurus and Virgo.
- When would this placement show most clearly?
- In the Sun's six-year Mahadasha and its sub-periods within other Mahadashas, read by BPHS Ch. 47's strength test. Within the Mahadasha, Ch. 47 Sloka 3-4 times the Sun's results by its degree: first ten degrees early, middle ten in the middle, last ten late.
- Why does the app show "favourable" in one place and "caution" in another?
- Because it runs separate rules from separate chapters: the planet row is the Bhrigu Sutras structure judged by the Sun's sign, the Dhan Bhava row is BPHS Ch. 42 judged by Saturn's aspect, and the 2nd-house row is judged by the 2nd lord. They sit side by side because the texts disagree.
- Does the app suggest remedies for this placement?
- No. Some source chapters, BPHS Ch. 52 among them, prescribe rituals; this app carries no remedies, gemstones or rituals for any placement.
