Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Jupiter in the 2nd house: Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, BPHS Ch. 13's verse that names Jupiter in the 2nd, the karako bhava nashaya debate, Kalanidhi Yoga, Jupiter as a lord placed in the 2nd for every rising sign, and how this app grades it.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

Jupiter in the 2nd house puts the planet BPHS makes significator of the 2nd into the 2nd. The readings are favourable by default: Saravali gives a rich, eloquent, fortunate and charitable native who enjoys good food; the Bhrigu Sutras give one who is rich and intelligent, stronger still in Jupiter's own sign or exaltation, and reverse it with a malefic; BPHS Ch. 13 names Jupiter in the 2nd among its wealth combinations, and says a benefic in Dhan Bhava gives wealth.

The qualification is a maxim rather than a verse: that a significator harms the house it signifies. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator raises it for this placement, as his guess at why Chamatkar Chintamani denies wealth here, and sides with the sutras instead. This page sets out the verses, the maxim, what Jupiter owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 2nd house, Dhana Bhava.

Sources and money

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. Statements about wealth are classical readings, not financial advice. The 2nd is also a Marak house in BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5; this app computes no longevity.

The significator of wealth in the house of wealth

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3 gives Dhan Bhava wealth, grains and food, family, death, enemies, metals and precious stones. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31 name it Artha, Dhana and Kutumba: means, wealth and household. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Jupiter the significator of four houses, the 2nd (family and finance), 5th, 9th and 11th, and Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II calls it "the natural benefic and Dhanakaraka" (p. 49). BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 judge nourishment of the body, learning, children, wealth and property from Jupiter.

Food and nourishment, wealth, family: three of the 2nd house's significations are also on Jupiter's list. The 2nd is a Panaphara, neither angle, trine nor dusthana (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36), and Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 32 say planets in Panapharas are felt in the middle of life.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 51

The verse in full: the native will be rich, will enjoy good food, be an eloquent speaker, be fortunate, be charitable and will have a beautiful body and face. No condition is stated. Three of its clauses fit the house exactly: wealth, food and speech.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 7-12

The sutras (p. 75): rich and intelligent; "what he foretells will come true"; financial and agricultural gains in the 16th year; very powerful. In its own sign or exaltation, very prosperous and wealthy. Associated with a malefic: obstacles in education, a thief and liar with vulgar speech. Debilitated and with a malefic: a drunkard and immoral, a destroyer of his family, with relations outside marriage and no children. These are the text's statements, reported and not applied. The engine's lines were written from the same chapter: favourable, "real wealth and prosperity - a genuine wealth combination in several charts"; testing, "obstacles in education and integrity under real affliction". Its provenance note records that the line about relations outside marriage was dropped.

Other Views (pp. 75-76). Brihat Jatak: eloquent and sweet-tongued. Phaldeepika: intelligent, handsome, eloquent, with good food. Chamatkar Chintamani: fond of poetry and versed in administration, but short of food, talkative, earning with difficulty and unable to accumulate wealth. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

BPHS Ch. 13 Sloka 2-3

"A benefic in Dhan will give wealth" (Sl. 1-2). And Sl. 3: "One will be wealthy, if Guru is in Dhan, as the Lord of Dhan, or is with Mangal." Jupiter is 2nd lord only for Scorpio and Aquarius rising, so the first half applies to those two Lagnas; the second half, Jupiter with Mars, applies to any.

Jupiter in the 2nd: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 51 (saravali.txt 4830), Bhrigu Sutras p. 75, BPHS Ch. 13 (bphs.txt 1067-1074), and the engine's wording.

Two of the house's other slokas take Jupiter's presence as an ingredient. Ch. 13 Sl. 11 gives effortless wealth in the family when the 2nd lord is with a benefic and in a high divisional dignity such as Paravatamsa, a grade of the Dasha Varga scheme. For any Lagna where the 2nd lord sits in its own house, a Jupiter beside it supplies the benefic; the divisional half needs the vargas, and this app does not test it. And Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16, the general rule BPHS sets before Ch. 13, say a house prospers when joined or aspected by a benefic: a Jupiter in the 2nd joins the 2nd and aspects the 6th, 8th and 10th, so four houses meet that test from one planet.

Education sits on both sides of the reading. The Bhrigu Sutras' list for the 2nd reports education as an opinion of "many a learned"; the sutras give Jupiter here intelligence and, with a malefic, "obstacles in educational pursuits", which the commentator ties to the 2nd as a house of education (p. 75); the engine's testing line names "obstacles in education and integrity" under affliction. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 51 does not mention learning at all for Jupiter in the 2nd.

Karako bhava nashaya: the maxim the sutras do not apply

The commentator's Note (p. 76) reports Chamatkar Chintamani's view that the native with Jupiter in the 2nd "can never be wealthy", and adds: "Perhaps the author has 'Karko Bhava Nashaya' theory in view." He then sides with Phaldeepika, Saravali and the sutras, which he finds "very logical" and correct in practice. He makes the same move for Phaldeepika's want of children with Jupiter in the 5th (p. 79), and for Mars in the 3rd he names the maxim and holds to the sutras "inspite of" it (p. 49).

For Jupiter in the 2nd, then, the texts as reported line up three to one. Saravali, the sutras and BPHS Ch. 13 all read the placement well and name no karaka exception; the maxim is the commentator's guess at another author's reason, and he does not endorse it. The app's planet row does not apply it either. This page records it because readers meet it elsewhere, not because the sources here lean on it.

Condensed from Saravali Ch. 30 (saravali.txt 4615-4940) and the Bhrigu Sutras' 2nd-house sutras (pp. 18, 34, 47, 63, 75, 88, 100).

Jupiter's is the only verse in the column with charity in it, and with the Sun's (Aries or Leo) and Mars's (its own signs or exaltation) one of the sutras that name the planet's own dignity as the upgrade. Mars and Jupiter are a pair here in two senses: Saravali reads Mars in the 2nd as poor, and BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 3 names Jupiter with Mars in the 2nd as a wealth combination. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 14 reads Jupiter with Mars as an artisan, a Vedic expert, intelligent, expert in speech, wise and fond of weapons.

Scorpio and Aquarius rising: Jupiter owns the 2nd

For these two Lagnas Jupiter is the 2nd lord in its own sign in the 2nd, Sagittarius for Scorpio and Pisces for Aquarius. Every 2nd-lord rule of BPHS Ch. 13 then applies to one planet: Ch. 13 Sl. 1 (the lord in its own house promotes wealth), Sl. 3 (Jupiter in the 2nd as its lord), Sl. 10 (the lord in its own sign: one who looks after his people, helps others and becomes famous), Sl. 12 (a strong 2nd lord gives beautiful eyes, a classical association and not medical advice) and Ch. 24 Sl. 14 (the 2nd lord in the 2nd: wealthy and proud).

The two Lagnas then differ by Jupiter's other house. For Scorpio it is the 5th, a trine: Ch. 24 Sl. 50 gives the 5th lord in the 2nd children and wealth, head of the household, and BPHS Ch. 34 calls Jupiter auspicious. For Aquarius it is the 11th: Ch. 24 Sl. 122 gives the 11th lord in the 2nd all kinds of wealth and accomplishment, and one planet holds both houses of Ch. 13 Sl. 4's 2nd-and-11th pairing. Ch. 34 Sl. 41-42 call Jupiter malefic and a killer for Aquarius, as owner of the 11th and 2nd. Sagittarius in the 2nd also carries a Moolatrikona question: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 and this engine give the first 10 degrees (one third), the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction only 5 (p. 10).

What Jupiter owns, from each rising sign

Jupiter is in your 2nd when it occupies the sign after your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. In Ch. 24, for lords placed in the 2nd, angles, trines and the 11th read well, the 8th lord worst, the 3rd lord as lacking effort.

Gemini rising is the strongest row by dignity and the most qualified by lordship. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, and owns the 7th and 10th, two angles and no trine: BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 call it malefic, and this app lists Kendradhipathya Dosha for Gemini, graded mild, with the benefic nature muted, not reversed. Ch. 24 Sl. 16 adds a note for the reverse direction: the 2nd lord in the 4th, exalted and with Jupiter, is "equal to a king", which is a different placement but shows the sloka set using Jupiter as a booster.

Sagittarius rising is the reverse: Jupiter is the Lagna lord in the 2nd, Ch. 24 Sl. 2 reads that warmly (gainful, scholarly, happy, religious, honourable), and it sits in Capricorn, its fall, where Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 19-20 give grief, want and service to others and Ch. 45 Sl. 15-18 dirtiness, dishonour and utter poverty. Leo rising carries the 8th lord into the 2nd, the row Ch. 24 reads worst, in an enemy's sign.

Kalanidhi, and the yogas beside the Moon and Sun

BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 31-32 define Kalanidhi Yog: Jupiter in the 2nd or 5th, aspected by Mercury and Venus, read as virtuous, honoured by kings, free of diseases, happy, wealthy and learned. Mercury and Venus have only the 7th aspect, so both would have to be in the 8th, and Mercury is never more than a sign from the Sun. detectYogas has no Kalanidhi rule, so its absence from the yogas list says nothing.

Gaja Kesari in this engine follows BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4, so a Jupiter in the 2nd, not an angle from the Lagna, forms it only with the Moon in the 2nd, 5th, 8th or 11th house and a benefic joining Jupiter or in the 8th to aspect it. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 79) says the rapport "gets completely lost" when Jupiter is 6th or 8th from the Moon: here, the Moon in the 9th or the 7th. With the Moon in the 1st, Jupiter is 2nd from it and forms Sunapha, which Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 12-14 read as high learning, fame, a good family and plenty of wealth when Jupiter causes it. With the Sun in the 1st, Jupiter in the 2nd forms Vesi, which Saravali Ch. 14 Sl. 3-5 read as accumulated money, learning and a good heart. BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 3 adds a wealth combination with the 2nd lord in an angle with Jupiter.

Aspects, strength and the Ashtakavarga

From the 2nd, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 2) returns [8, 6, 10]: the 8th by the 7th aspect, the 6th by the special 5th-place aspect, and the 10th by the special 9th-place aspect. Two of the three are dusthanas; BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 19 adds Jupiter's aspect in full. The texts state no specific result for these aspects. See the 8th house and the 10th house.

Directional strength is close to its peak: full in the 1st (BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7), so 3.33 of 4 in the 2nd in this engine. Jupiter's own Ashtakavarga (BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 53-55) marks the 2nd place from a contributor good for every contributor except Saturn, seven of eight; the Lagna is one of them, so a Jupiter in the 2nd house always receives the Lagna's point in its own table. The Ashtakavarga calculator and the Shad Bala calculator show both.

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assign wealth to the Hora (D2), and Ch. 7 Sl. 13-16 place Jupiter among the grahas whose effects are pronounced in the Sun's Hora. So for a Jupiter in the 2nd, its own Hora half is a second check on the wealth reading; the Hora (D2) calculator gives it.

Sign and company

Saravali Ch. 27, Jupiter by sign: Sagittarius (Scorpio rising) lasting wealth, charitable, a minister; Pisces (Aquarius rising) rich, fearless, firm, honoured by friends; Cancer (Gemini rising) rich in grain and wealth, truthful; Leo (Cancer rising) learned, rich; Taurus (Aries rising) wealthy, distinguished in speech; Gemini (Taurus rising) affluent, eloquent; Libra (Virgo rising) very affluent, foremost among traders; Aquarius (Capricorn rising) a list of faults, among them losing wealth through his own words. Almost every row names wealth or speech; the sign readings make no reference to house, and this page does not merge them.

Company, by Saravali Ch. 15: with the Sun (Sl. 5), a king's minister, gains through friends; with the Moon, firm in friendship, wealthy; with Mars, intelligent, expert in speech, the BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 3 wealth case; with Mercury, a scholar; with Venus, lives by learning and argument; with Saturn, heroic, wealthy, head of an association. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 6-8 read malefics in the 2nd as part of the poverty combinations only when both the 2nd and 11th lords are damaged too.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Jupiter's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 2nd is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The dignity function receives the chart, so the friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.

  • Always favourable: Gemini (exalted), Scorpio (Moolatrikona or own) and Aquarius (own).
  • Never favourable: Sagittarius (debilitated), and Aries, Taurus, Leo and Virgo, Venus's and Mercury's signs, Neutral at best.
  • Favourable only with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Cancer, Libra and Pisces (otherwise Neutral) and Capricorn (otherwise Enemy sign).

The engine's house card for the 2nd takes its tone from the 2nd lord's dignity, which for Scorpio and Aquarius rising is Jupiter's own. The career and money engine reports Jupiter's strength separately as the Dhana Karaka condition beside its timing windows. dashaQuality() grades the period good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign, neutral for friendly or neutral, challenging for enemy sign or fall.

Timing

Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 list the 5th, 9th and 10th and Jupiter's strong signs for its favourable dasha; the 2nd is not on that list, so the dignity half decides. BPHS Ch. 54 gives Jupiter's sub-period inside Mars's dasha good results with Jupiter "in Dhan" among other places, and several sub-period chapters list "in Dhan" among good positions, while also flagging lords of the 2nd and 7th.

Inside Jupiter's own dasha, BPHS Ch. 56 reads several sub-periods partly by the sub-lord's house counted "from the Lord of the Dasha", that is from Jupiter: an angle or trine from Jupiter reads well, the 6th, 8th or 12th from it badly. With Jupiter in the 2nd house the count shifts by one. Planets in the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses are in angles from Jupiter, and those in the 6th and 10th in trines; planets in the 7th, 9th and 1st houses are 6th, 8th and 12th from it. So a sub-lord in the Lagna, the 7th or the 9th house reads poorly from a 2nd-house Jupiter by that count, whatever it reads from the Lagna.

For Scorpio and Aquarius rising Jupiter's period is also the 2nd lord's, for which BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give "distress and possibility of death"; this app keeps the life area and words it "financial and family matters - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Jupiter in the 2nd from the Moon is favourable in its rule.

Every 2nd-lord sloka above applies: Jupiter is the 2nd lord in its own sign in the 2nd (Ch. 13 Sl. 1, 3, 10; Ch. 24 Sl. 14), and the 11th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 122). The sutras' own-sign upgrade applies. Mars is in Cancer, not with Jupiter, so the other half of Sl. 3 is not involved.

Saturn aspects the 2nd from the 8th by its 7th aspect, a malefic aspect that removes the aspect score. The Moon is in the 12th, so Jupiter is 3rd from it: no Gaja Kesari. With the Sun in the 3rd, Jupiter is in the 12th sign from the Sun, and the engine's yoga list includes Ubhayachari Yoga naming Venus, Jupiter and the Sun. Jupiter at 0.42 degrees has only just entered Pisces in the engine's positions, a reminder that a planet near a sign boundary can change sign, and house, over a few days. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Jupiter is in the sign after your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Read its dignity: own sign or exaltation is the sutras' upgrade.
  3. Find what Jupiter rules and read both Ch. 24 slokas for those lords in the 2nd.
  4. For Scorpio and Aquarius rising, read Ch. 13 Sl. 1, 3 and 10 for the 2nd lord; for any Lagna, check whether Mars joins Jupiter (Sl. 3).
  5. Check the Moon's house for Gaja Kesari or Sunapha, and the Sun's for Vesi.
  6. Read the Hora chart beside the 2nd house, as BPHS Ch. 7 asks.

How a yoga entry should be weighed is in what a yoga in your chart means. Money and work are combined on the career and money page; method and limits on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Jupiter in the 2nd guarantees wealth." The verses favour it; BPHS's poverty slokas in Ch. 13 need both the 2nd and 11th lords damaged, and the reverse readings depend on the same lords.
  • "The karaka in its own house always harms it." That is an opinion the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator reports and does not endorse for Jupiter in the 2nd.
  • "Jupiter in the 2nd gives Kalanidhi Yoga." Only with Mercury and Venus aspecting it, and the app does not compute that yoga.
  • "Exalted Jupiter in the 2nd is best for every Lagna." Exaltation falls to Gemini rising, where Jupiter carries the Kendra blemish.
  • "Jupiter in the 2nd is a Marak." BPHS names lords of the 2nd and malefics in it as Marakas; this app computes no longevity.
  • "The 2nd is income." Income is the 11th in BPHS; the 2nd is what is held, eaten and shared with the household.
  • "Saravali's charity line means money will be given away." The verse lists charitable among four qualities; it is not a forecast of spending.

Questions about Jupiter in the 2nd

Is Jupiter good in the 2nd house?
The verses are favourable: rich, eloquent, fortunate, charitable (Saravali); rich and intelligent, more so in own sign or exaltation (Bhrigu Sutras, which reverse it with a malefic); a benefic in the 2nd gives wealth (BPHS Ch. 13).
Does Jupiter harm the 2nd because it is the karaka?
The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator suggests the maxim karako bhava nashaya may lie behind Chamatkar Chintamani's view that Jupiter in the 2nd denies wealth, and himself follows the sutras. The sutras do not apply it, and neither does this app.
Which rising signs make Jupiter the 2nd lord in its own house?
Scorpio (Jupiter in Sagittarius) and Aquarius (Jupiter in Pisces). BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 3 names exactly that case among its wealth combinations.
What does Jupiter aspect from the 2nd?
The 8th by its 7th aspect, the 6th by its 5th-place aspect and the 10th by its 9th-place aspect.
Why is my Jupiter in the 2nd marked testing?
Its dignity label is not Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly. Sagittarius rising (fall in Capricorn) and Aries, Taurus, Leo and Virgo rising (enemy signs) never get the favourable line.
What is Kalanidhi Yoga?
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 31-32: Jupiter in the 2nd or 5th aspected by Mercury and Venus, read as virtuous, honoured, happy, wealthy and learned. This app does not compute it.
Does Jupiter with Mars in the 2nd matter?
BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 3 names Jupiter in the 2nd with Mars among its wealth combinations, and Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 14 reads the pair as intelligent and expert in speech.
Does Jupiter in the 2nd decide wealth on its own?
Not in BPHS. Every poverty sloka in Ch. 13 (Sl. 6-8) also needs the 11th lord damaged, and income is the 11th (Ch. 11 Sl. 12) while the 2nd is what is held. A strong 2nd with a weak 11th, or the reverse, is read as a mixed case.
Is a Jupiter dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 favour Jupiter's strong signs and the 5th, 9th and 10th; the 2nd is not on that list. The app grades the period by dignity.
