The 2nd house is where a chart keeps what a person has. Its Sanskrit name, Dhana Bhava, means the house of wealth, and that is the heading most readers arrive with. But the classical lists put more than money here: food, family, the face, the eyes and the way a person speaks all belong to the same house. It is the sign that rises immediately after your Lagna, and it is read as what gathers around the self once the self has arrived.
This page sets out what the texts actually say about the 2nd house, sloka by sloka, and how this app computes it. The main source is Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), which gives the house a chapter of its own (Ch. 13) and twelve slokas on its lord (Ch. 24). Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras are used for the planets placed in it. Where the texts disagree, the disagreement is shown. Where they say nothing, so does this page. To follow along, open your chart in the birth chart calculator; you need a birth time, because houses do not exist without an Ascendant.
What the 2nd house signifies
BPHS lists the house in one sloka. Ch. 11 Sl. 3: 'Wealth, grains (food etc.), family, death, enemies, metals, precious stones etc. are to be understood through Dhan Bhava.' Three things in that list are easy to accept: stored wealth, what you eat, and the people you live among. Metals and precious stones are the classical form of savings. 'Death' and 'enemies' are less obvious, and BPHS explains the first of them elsewhere (see the section on the Marak label below).
Saravali gives the house three names. In its list of synonyms for the twelve bhavas (Sl. 26-27 of the Rasi chapter) the second is 'Artha and Dhana', both words for wealth and material means, and a few slokas later it adds 'Kutumba is the 2nd', the word for the household or family unit. So the family reading is not a modern softening; it is in the name.
The Bhrigu Sutras give the longest list. Their summary of the Second House covers money matters, gain or loss, 'one's power and resources', jewellery, precious stones, bonds and securities, and then speech, vision, the right eye, memory, imagination, the tongue, nose, teeth and chin, and family members. The same passage adds that 'many a learned are of the opinion that education is also a signification of this house', which is worded as an opinion and should be read as one. It also calls the house a maraka sthana.
| Source | What it places in the 2nd house |
|---|---|
| BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3 | Wealth, grains and food, family, death, enemies, metals, precious stones |
| BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 12-13 | The eyes; truthfulness of speech |
| Saravali, bhava synonyms | Artha, Dhana, Kutumba (means, wealth, household) |
| Bhrigu Sutras, Second House | Money, possessions, jewellery, securities, speech, vision, right eye, memory, face parts, family; education as a reported opinion |
| This app's house card | Title 'Wealth & speech'; short line 'money, family, voice' |
Where the house sits in the structure of a chart
BPHS sorts the twelve houses into groups in Ch. 7 (Sl. 33-36). The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th are Kendras, the angles. The houses that follow each angle, the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th, are Panapharas, the succedent houses. The 2nd is not a Kendra, not a trine (those are the 5th and 9th) and not a Dusthana (the 6th, 8th and 12th). It is a neutral, supporting house, and that is why BPHS judges it mostly through its lord rather than through its own status.
Saravali attaches a timing idea to the grouping (Rasi chapter, Sl. 32): planets in angles give their effects in early life, planets in Panapharas 'are felt in the middle age', and planets in the cadent houses at the end of life. It is a single line and Saravali does not develop it into a method, so treat it as a classical observation about emphasis, not a date.
The same chapter of BPHS (Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8) assigns each topic of life to a divisional chart: 'the physique from Lagn, wealth from Hora'. The Hora is the D2, in which every sign is cut into two halves. This means the classical method does not rest the wealth question on one house alone; the 2nd house in the birth chart and the Hora (D2) chart are meant to be read together.
The Marak label
BPHS Ch. 44 (Sl. 2-5) explains why 'death' is in the list. The 3rd and 8th are the two houses of longevity; the houses twelfth from each of them, the 2nd and the 7th, are therefore called Marak Bhavas, and the chapter calls the 2nd the stronger of the two. Their lords, and malefics placed in them, are named Marakas. This is a technical term from the chapter on longevity. This app does not compute lifespan or death timing from any chart, and no part of its output uses the Marak rule for that purpose. The label is reported here because the texts use it and you will meet it elsewhere.
Which planet rules your 2nd house
Almost everything BPHS says about the 2nd house depends on its lord, so find that first. This app uses whole-sign houses: the rising sign is the whole 1st house and the next sign is the whole 2nd house. The lord of the 2nd is simply the planet that owns that next sign. Rahu and Ketu own no signs in this app's tables, so they are never a house lord. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign; the table does the rest.
| Rising sign (Lagna) | 2nd house sign | 2nd lord |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Taurus | Venus |
| Taurus | Gemini | Mercury |
| Gemini | Cancer | Moon |
| Cancer | Leo | Sun |
| Leo | Virgo | Mercury |
| Virgo | Libra | Venus |
| Libra | Scorpio | Mars |
| Scorpio | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| Sagittarius | Capricorn | Saturn |
| Capricorn | Aquarius | Saturn |
| Aquarius | Pisces | Jupiter |
| Pisces | Aries | Mars |
Two things follow from the table. For Sagittarius and Capricorn risings Saturn is the 2nd lord, and for Capricorn it is also the Lagna lord, so one planet carries both the self and the resources. And every planet except the Sun and Moon owns two signs, so your 2nd lord nearly always rules a second house as well. BPHS's slokas describe the 2nd lordship alone; the other lordship is a separate reading you have to add.
How BPHS judges the 2nd house (Ch. 13)
Ch. 13, 'Effects of Dhan Bhava', is thirteen slokas long. It is worth going through in order, because each sloka is a testable condition on a chart, not a mood.
The core rule (Sl. 1-2)
'If the Lord of Dhan is in Dhan, or is in an angle, or in trine, he will promote one's wealth. Should he be in Ari/8th/12th, financial conditions will decline. A benefic in Dhan will give wealth, while a malefic instead will destroy wealth.' That is two separate tests: where the lord sits (2nd, 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 5th or 9th is supportive; 6th, 8th or 12th is not), and what kind of planet occupies the house itself. The sloka says nothing about the 3rd and 11th here; the 11th is handled next.
Combinations for wealth (Sl. 3-5)
- Sl. 3: Jupiter in the 2nd as the lord of the 2nd, or with Mars. Jupiter is 2nd lord only for Scorpio and Aquarius risings, so the first half of this sloka applies to those two Lagnas.
- Sl. 4: the 2nd lord in the 11th while the 11th lord is in the 2nd, an exchange between the house of holdings and the house of gains. 'Alternately these two Lords may join in an angle, or in a trine.'
- Sl. 5: the 2nd lord in an angle while the 11th lord is in a trine from it, or is aspected by or joined with Jupiter and Venus.
Combinations for want (Sl. 6-8)
Sl. 6-7 describe the mirror image: the 2nd lord in an evil house, the 11th lord also so placed, and a malefic in the 2nd. The text says such a person 'will be penniless', and that when both lords are combust or with malefics there is 'penury right from birth'. Note how many conditions have to hold at once: both lords and the house itself. Sl. 8 is narrower still. Both lords in the 6th, 8th or 12th, with Mars in the 11th and Rahu in the 2nd, is read as loss of wealth 'on account of royal punishments', which in present terms is loss through the state: fines, penalties, legal orders.
How to read the harsh slokas
BPHS states outcomes as certainties because that is the idiom of the text. This page reports the condition and the classical reading. It does not tell you that you will be poor, and the app's own wording for these patterns is 'a period calling for financial caution rather than a fixed loss'.
Spending, reputation and ease (Sl. 9-11)
- Sl. 9: Jupiter in the 11th, Venus in the 2nd, a benefic in the 12th and the 2nd lord with a benefic. The reading is not loss but 'expenses on religious, or charitable grounds'. Money goes out, to good use.
- Sl. 10: the 2nd lord in its own sign or exalted. The person 'will look after his people, will help others and also will become famous'. This sloka is about what wealth is used for, and it ties the family meaning of the house to the money meaning.
- Sl. 11: the 2nd lord with a benefic and in a high divisional dignity such as Paravatamsa. Then 'there will be effortlessly all kinds of wealth in the native's family'. The translator's note explains that this refers to the Dasha Varga scheme, in which a planet is graded by how many of ten divisional charts place it in good dignity.
Eyes and speech (Sl. 12-13)
Sl. 12: if the 2nd lord is strong 'the native will possess beautiful eyes'; if it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th the text speaks of disease or deformity of the eyes. Sl. 13: if the 2nd house and its lord are both joined by malefics, the person 'will be a talebearer, will speak untruth'. These two slokas are why the house is called the house of the face and of speech. The eye statement is a classical association and not a diagnosis; nothing in a chart replaces an eye examination.
When any house prospers: the general rule
Ch. 13 sits on top of a general rule given in Ch. 11 (Sl. 14-16). A house prospers when it is joined or aspected by a benefic, and when its lord is in a youthful or alert state (the Avasthas), or in the 10th. A house is harmed when it is not aspected by its own lord, or when its lord is with a malefic, with a lord of the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th, defeated in a planetary war, or in an old, dead or sleeping Avastha. Apply that to the 2nd house before applying the special slokas. The 1st house page walks through the same rule for the Lagna.
The 2nd lord in each of the twelve houses
BPHS Ch. 24 gives one sloka for the 2nd lord in every house (Sl. 13-24). They are paraphrased below. Several of these slokas also carry statements about wives, other women, childlessness and bodily injury; those clauses are left out here, deliberately, because this app does not issue verdicts of that kind about a person. What remains is what each sloka says about means, work and character.
| 2nd lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | Reading (paraphrased) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st house | Sl. 13 | Endowed with wealth; at odds with the family; hard-hearted; does work for others |
| 2nd house | Sl. 14 | Wealthy and proud |
| 3rd house | Sl. 15 | Valorous, wise, virtuous and miserly when linked to a benefic; unorthodox when linked to a malefic |
| 4th house | Sl. 16 | Acquires all kinds of wealth; if the lord is exalted and with Jupiter, 'equal to a king' |
| 5th house | Sl. 17 | Wealthy; the children too are intent on earning |
| 6th house | Sl. 18 | With a benefic, gain through opponents; with a malefic, loss through them |
| 7th house | Sl. 19 | The text says the person 'will be a doctor'; the remaining clauses concern the spouse and are omitted |
| 8th house | Sl. 20 | Abundant land and wealth, but limited ease in marriage and with the elder brother |
| 9th house | Sl. 21 | Wealthy, diligent and skilful; unwell in childhood, happier later; visits shrines |
| 10th house | Sl. 22 | Honourable and learned, with much wealth |
| 11th house | Sl. 23 | All kinds of wealth; ever diligent, honourable and famous |
| 12th house | Sl. 24 | Adventurous, short of wealth, with an interest in other people's wealth |
Compare this table with Ch. 13 and you will find the two chapters do not fully agree. Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says the 2nd lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th makes finances decline. Ch. 24 agrees for the 12th, makes the 6th conditional on the company the lord keeps, and for the 8th says the opposite: 'abundant land and wealth'. Both statements are in the same book. The honest way to hold them is that the 8th placement is disputed inside BPHS itself, and that Ch. 24's own qualifier for the 6th (benefic or malefic company) is the kind of detail that decides a real chart.
Notice also where the strongest readings fall: the 4th, 10th and 11th, which is consistent with the Ch. 13 rule about angles, and with the special link between the 2nd and the 10th house of work.
Every other house lord placed in the 2nd
The same chapter gives the reverse view: what happens when the lord of some other house comes to sit in the 2nd. This tells you which area of life is feeding your resources. Clauses about wives and other women are again omitted.
| Lord of | BPHS Ch. 24 | In the 2nd house (paraphrased) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 2 | Gainful, scholarly, happy, of good qualities, religious and honourable |
| 3rd | Sl. 26 | Little drive or effort, not happy, an eye on others' wealth |
| 4th | Sl. 38 | Enjoys pleasures, all kinds of wealth, family life and honour; adventurous; cunning |
| 5th | Sl. 50 | Children and wealth; head of the household; honourable, attached to the spouse, well known |
| 6th | Sl. 62 | Adventurous, known among their people, lives in other countries, a skilful speaker, absorbed in their own work |
| 7th | Sl. 74 | Gains wealth through the spouse; inclined to put things off |
| 8th | Sl. 86 | Low bodily vigour; a little wealth; lost wealth is not regained |
| 9th | Sl. 98 | A scholar, dear to all, wealthy, happy in family |
| 10th | Sl. 110 | Wealthy, virtuous, honoured by authority, charitable; happiness from the father |
| 11th | Sl. 122 | All kinds of wealth and accomplishment; charitable, religious, always happy |
| 12th | Sl. 134 | Spends on unfortunate things, yet religious, sweet in speech, with virtues and happiness |
The pattern is plain. The lords of the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th, the angles, trines and the house of gains, are read well in the 2nd. The lord of the 8th is read worst, and the lord of the 3rd as lacking effort. The lord of the 6th is interesting: BPHS gives it speech and a life abroad rather than loss. Each sibling house has its own page, for example the 5th, 9th, 8th and 12th houses.
The 2nd and the 11th: holdings and income
BPHS keeps pairing these two houses. The 11th (Labh Bhava) is 'income' and 'prosperity' in Ch. 11 Sl. 12; the 2nd is what is held. Besides Ch. 13 Sl. 4-8, the chapter on the 11th returns to the pair three times. Ch. 22 Sl. 3: the 11th lord in the 2nd while the 2nd lord is in an angle with Jupiter, and 'the gains will be great'. Sl. 6: Jupiter in the 11th with the Moon in the 2nd and Venus in the 9th. Sl. 9: the 2nd and 11th lords exchanging houses, with wealth amassed 'after marriage'.
The practical point is that the texts rarely call a chart wealthy or poor on the 2nd house alone. Every poverty sloka in Ch. 13 requires the 11th lord to be damaged as well. If your 2nd lord is weak but your 11th lord is well placed, the conditions of Sl. 6-8 are simply not met.
Planets in the 2nd house
Saravali Ch. 30 gives one sloka for each of the seven planets in the 2nd; the Bhrigu Sutras give a set of sutras for each, with conditions. They are set side by side below because they do not always agree, and the disagreements are informative.
| Planet | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 3: servants and cattle, but deprived of happiness and wealth; loss through authority or thieves | Sutras 22-32: loss of wealth through government; not so if the Sun is in Aries or Leo; benefic aspect protects and gives wealth |
| Moon | Sl. 15: great happiness, friends and wealth; a full Moon gives affluence and few words | Sutras 9-14: wealthy and easily satisfied; with benefics, highly educated; with a malefic, uneducated |
| Mars | Sl. 27: poor, bad food, bad company, without learning | Sutras 10-15: no education but gains wealth; well educated if Mars is in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn |
| Mercury | Sl. 39: earns by their own wisdom; enjoys food and drink; auspicious speech | Sutras 18-24: talkative, versed in the shastras, contented, wealthy |
| Jupiter | Sl. 51: rich, eloquent, fortunate, charitable | Sutras 7-12: rich and intelligent; stronger still in own sign or exaltation |
| Venus | Sl. 63: abundant food, drink and wealth; good speech | Sutras 14-19: wealthy, with a family, good food, attractive eyes, humble and helpful |
| Saturn | Sl. 75: worldly prosperity, apart from their own people; renders justice; later earns abroad | Sutras 8-9: in want of money; holds no land |
| Rahu or Ketu | Not among the seven slokas cited here | Sutras 5-6: read as poor; a mark on the lips if with a malefic |
Three disagreements stand out. On Mars, Saravali says poor and Bhrigu says 'he will gain wealth'; both agree on a lack of schooling unless Mars is dignified. On Saturn, Saravali allows 'worldly prosperity' and money earned later in other countries, where Bhrigu sees only stringency. On the Sun, both are cautious, but Bhrigu states the exception outright: an exalted or own-sign Sun does not give the loss. Benefics (Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus) are read well by both, which matches BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 2: 'a benefic in Dhan will give wealth'.
Each placement has a page of its own with the full conditions: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in the 2nd house.
Named combinations that involve the 2nd house
BPHS Ch. 42, 'Combinations for Penury', ends with three rules about the 2nd house that each carry their own reversal (Sl. 16-18). They are the only rules from that chapter this app checks, because they need nothing but house placement and aspect. You can see whether any applies to you in the yogas and doshas calculator.
- Mars and Saturn together in the 2nd. The text reads this as wealth destroyed, and then reverses it: 'Should Budh give a Drishti to Mangal and Śani in Dhan Bhava, there will be great wealth.' Mercury has only the 7th aspect, so in a whole-sign chart that means Mercury in the 8th house. The app names this 'Dhan Bhava Caution (Mars-Saturn)' and marks it mild, or reversed when Mercury's aspect is present.
- The Sun in the 2nd aspected by Saturn is read as want; the Sun in the 2nd without Saturn's aspect as 'riches and fame'. The app reports both outcomes, so a Sun in the 2nd always shows which side of the rule it falls on.
- Saturn in the 2nd aspected by the Sun is given the same reading as the afflicted Sun. The Sun's only aspect is the 7th, so this means the Sun in the 8th house.
The same chapter's Sl. 5 names the 2nd lord directly: the Lagna lord with a malefic in the 6th, 8th or 12th while the 2nd lord is in an enemy's sign or debilitated. On the positive side, BPHS Ch. 36 (Sl. 31-32) defines Kalanidhi Yog: Jupiter in the 2nd or 5th, aspected by Mercury and Venus, read as 'virtuous, honoured by the kings... happy, wealthy and learned'. And Ch. 41, 'Combinations for Wealth', is coded in this app as two Dhan Yoga families; notably neither is built on the 2nd house. They key on a planet in its own sign in the 5th with specific planets in the 11th, or in its own sign in the Lagna. What a yoga flag does and does not mean is covered in what a yoga in your chart means.
How this app computes and reads your 2nd house
- House boundaries. The chart is whole-sign: the 2nd house is the entire sign after your rising sign. Without a birth time there is no Ascendant and therefore no houses at all, which the page on an unknown birth time explains.
- The house card. For each house the Kundali view names the sign, its ruler, the ruler's dignity and the house the ruler sits in. The tone of the card comes from one number, the ruler's dignity score: a score of 1 or more reads as favourable, -1 or less as testing, anything between as neutral. It is a deliberately narrow test of BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 10, not a full judgement of the house. See the Kundali feature.
- Planets in the house. Each planet's house reading is drawn from the Bhrigu Sutras and gated by dignity, so a dignified planet in the 2nd shows the favourable side of its sutras and a poorly placed one the testing side.
- Strength of the lord. BPHS's general rule asks whether the lord is strong. The Shad Bala calculator gives the planet's strength, and the Navamsa (D9) shows whether its dignity holds in the second chart.
- The pada of the house. The Jaimini chapters of BPHS compute an Arudha for every house; the 2nd's is A2. The Bhava Padas calculator lists all twelve. For an even rising sign, A2 is also the pada this app selects as the Upa Pad (BPHS Ch. 30).
- Money and work together. The Career and Money view combines the chart with the running dasha and transits rather than reading the 2nd house in isolation.
What the app does not do with this house
It does not test Ch. 13 Sl. 11's Paravatamsa condition inside its yoga check, it does not apply the Marak rule of Ch. 44, and it does not turn any 2nd-house pattern into a statement about your net worth. Positions are computed from the app's own astronomical routines with the Lahiri ayanamsa, as the methodology page describes.
Timing: when the 2nd house becomes active
A house is always in the chart; it comes forward when its lord runs a period. BPHS Ch. 48 (Sl. 2-4) lists the result of each house lord's dasha in one line each. For the 2nd lord the line is harsh: 'distress and possibility of death in the Dasha of the Lord of Dhan'. That is the Marak idea again. This app keeps the life area and drops the death language: when your running Mahadasha lord rules the 2nd, the dasha card reads 'financial and family matters - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha'. Find your current period with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, and see what a Mahadasha is for how the periods are built.
The sub-period chapters (Ch. 52 onward) use the 2nd house in two opposite ways, and both recur many times. A sub-period lord placed 'in a Kendr, Trikon, in Dhan, or Labh' is listed among the good positions, the ones that bring the favourable results of the period. But a sub-period lord who is 'the Lord of Dhan, or Yuvati' is repeatedly flagged for bodily distress. So occupying the 2nd is treated as supportive, while ruling it carries the Marak caution. The texts follow these lines with remedial measures; this app does not prescribe remedies and they are not repeated here. Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantardasha.
Ch. 50, on the sign-based dashas, adds two details. Sl. 43-45: a planet whose period is otherwise favourable, if placed in a Marak house, gives 'displeasure of government and loss of wealth'. Sl. 51-52: the house Rahu occupies is harmed at the start of a period, and 'if such a Bhava is Dhan, there will be loss of wealth'; in the same passage Venus and the Moon in the 2nd at the start of a period are read as a great gain. These belong to the Rasi dasha systems, not to Vimshottari, and should not be carried across.
Transits are a different frame. This app counts transit houses from the natal Moon, not from the Lagna, so 'Saturn in the 2nd' in the Gochar calculator means the 2nd sign from your Moon. That is also the closing phase of Sade Sati, which is defined by Saturn's transit relative to the natal Moon. It is a related idea, but it is not a statement about your natal 2nd house. The Timing feature shows the dasha and transit layers side by side.
Common misreadings
- 'An empty 2nd house means no money.' No text says so. Most houses in any chart are empty; BPHS Ch. 13 opens with the lord, and nearly every one of its thirteen slokas names the lord.
- 'A malefic in the 2nd destroys wealth.' Ch. 13 Sl. 2 does say that, as a general line. But the poverty slokas that follow need the 2nd and 11th lords damaged too, Saravali gives Saturn 'worldly prosperity' here, and Ch. 42 reverses Mars with Saturn outright when Mercury aspects.
- 'The 2nd house is income.' Income is the 11th in BPHS Ch. 11. The 2nd is what is held, eaten and shared with the household. A chart can show strong earning and weak keeping, or the reverse.
- 'The 2nd lord in the 8th is ruin.' Ch. 13 says finances decline; Ch. 24 Sl. 20 says abundant land and wealth. The source disagrees with itself, so nobody can state this one flatly.
- 'Maraka means the 2nd lord's period is dangerous.' The Marak rule belongs to a longevity method that weighs many factors over a whole life. Lifting one line out of it is a misuse, and this app does not apply it.
- 'The 2nd house is only about money.' Speech, truthfulness, the eyes, food and family are in the primary lists. Sl. 10 of Ch. 13 reads a strong 2nd lord as someone who looks after their people.
- 'My 2nd house in the transit report is my 2nd house.' Transit houses here are counted from the Moon. Check which frame a statement uses before comparing two readings.
Check it in your own chart
- Open the birth chart calculator with your date, exact time and place. Note the rising sign and the sign after it: that sign is your 2nd house.
- Find the 2nd lord from the table above and note its house. In the 2nd, an angle or a trine meets Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2; in the 6th, 8th or 12th does not. Then read its row in the Ch. 24 table.
- Note the lord's dignity. Own sign or exaltation is Ch. 13 Sl. 10. Debilitated or in an enemy's sign is half of Ch. 42 Sl. 5; the other half concerns the Lagna lord.
- List any planets in the 2nd. Benefic or malefic is the second half of Sl. 1-2. Read each one's row in the Saravali and Bhrigu table, and its own page for the conditions.
- Do the same three steps for the 11th house and its lord. The wealth and want slokas need both.
- Look at which planets aspect the 2nd. Jupiter's and Venus's aspects are named in Sl. 5; Saturn's on a Sun there, and Mercury's on Mars with Saturn, change the Ch. 42 rules. The yogas calculator runs those checks for you.
- Check whether the 2nd lord is running a period now, in the dasha calculator. If you want the pieces weighed together in plain language, ask in the AI Life Chat, which grounds its answer in the same computed chart.
Questions people ask
- What does the 2nd house represent in Vedic astrology?
- BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3 lists wealth, grains and food, family, death, enemies, metals and precious stones. Ch. 13 adds the eyes and truthful speech. Saravali names the house Artha, Dhana and Kutumba: means, wealth and household. The Bhrigu Sutras extend the list to the face, the right eye, memory and, as a reported opinion, education.
- How do I find the lord of my 2nd house?
- Find your rising sign with the Lagna calculator. The next sign in zodiac order is your 2nd house, and the planet that owns that sign is the 2nd lord. A Leo rising has Virgo as the 2nd house and Mercury as its lord. You need a birth time for this; the Moon sign alone will not give it.
- Is an empty 2nd house bad for money?
- The texts do not say so. BPHS judges the house first by where its lord sits and how strong it is, then by any occupant, then by the 11th house and its lord. An empty 2nd house with a well-placed lord meets the opening rule of Ch. 13 without any planet being in the house.
- Which house is better for the 2nd lord?
- By Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2: the 2nd itself, the angles (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and the trines (5th, 9th). By Ch. 24 the most generous readings are for the 4th, 10th and 11th. The 12th is read as short of wealth in both chapters. The 8th is disputed: declining finances in Ch. 13, abundant land and wealth in Ch. 24.
- Why is the 2nd house called a maraka house?
- BPHS Ch. 44 counts the 3rd and 8th as houses of longevity and calls the house twelfth from each, the 2nd and the 7th, Marak Bhavas. It is a term from the classical longevity method. This app does not compute lifespan and does not use the rule; in its dasha reading the 2nd lord's period is described as financial and family matters needing extra care.
- Does Saturn in the 2nd house mean poverty?
- The sources split. The Bhrigu Sutras read Saturn here as financial stringency. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 75 gives worldly prosperity and money earned later in other countries. BPHS Ch. 42 only adds a caution when the Sun aspects that Saturn. The full conditions are on the Saturn in the 2nd house page.
- What is the difference between the 2nd house and the 11th house?
- In BPHS Ch. 11 the 11th is income and prosperity, what comes in; the 2nd is wealth, food and family, what is held. The wealth slokas in Ch. 13 and Ch. 22 nearly all link the two lords, and the poverty slokas need both to be damaged.
- Which divisional chart shows wealth?
- BPHS Ch. 7 says wealth is read from the Hora, the D2. You can compute yours with the Hora (D2) calculator. It supplements the 2nd house of the birth chart; it does not replace it.
- When does the 2nd house give its results?
- Chiefly in the Mahadasha and Antardasha of its lord and of planets placed in it. BPHS's sub-period chapters list a period lord sitting in the 2nd among the favourable positions. Saravali adds one line of its own: planets in the succedent houses, of which the 2nd is one, are felt in middle age.
