Planet in house

What the classical texts say about the Moon in the 2nd house: Saravali's full-Moon clause, the Bhrigu Sutras on wealth and education, BPHS Ch. 13 on a benefic in Dhana, the three rising signs a commentator warns about, and how this app grades the placement.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

BPHS opens its chapter on the 2nd house with two tests. Where is the house lord? And what kind of planet sits in the house? "A benefic in Dhan will give wealth, while a malefic instead will destroy wealth" (Ch. 13 Sl. 2). The Moon is a natural benefic in BPHS, and a waning Moon a malefic. So the first thing a Moon in the 2nd raises is a question the texts answer by phase, before any verse about the Moon itself is read.

The Moon verses are among the kindest for this house. Saravali gives great happiness, friends and wealth, and adds a clause for a full Moon. The Bhrigu Sutras give wealth and contentment, with education turning on the Moon's company. And the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator names three rising signs for which a 2nd-house Moon will not give good results. This page sets those out with the app's reading. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 2nd house, Dhana Bhava.

Sources, and money

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The texts state outcomes as certainties because that is their idiom; this page reports conditions and readings, not a statement about your finances. Nothing here is financial advice.

What the 2nd house holds

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3 lists the house in one line: wealth, grains and food, family, death, enemies, metals and precious stones. Saravali (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31) names it Artha and Dhana, wealth and means, and Kutumba, the household, so the family reading is in the name itself. The Bhrigu Sutras' list of the house's significations (p. 14) adds speech, vision and the right eye, memory, imagination, the face, and family members, and reports education as the opinion of "many a learned". BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 12-13 tie the house to the eyes and to truthfulness of speech.

The 2nd is a Panaphara, a succedent house, not an angle, a trine or a Dusthana (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36): a neutral, supporting house that BPHS judges mostly through its lord rather than its own status. Saravali (Ch. 3 Sl. 32) attaches a timing remark to the class: planets in Panapharas are "felt in the middle age". It is a single line, and this app does not apply it. The Moon itself, in BPHS, is the mind (Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13) and one of the royal pair (Sl. 14-15); in the 2nd it sits in the house of what is kept, eaten and spoken.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 15

The verse (p. 101): the native "will enjoy incomparable happiness and friends and be wealthy. If the said Moon be Full, the native will be very affluent and will speak less." The verse is unconditionally favourable in its first half and attaches a stronger version to one phase. "Of few words" is worth noting in a house that BPHS ties to speech (Ch. 13 Sl. 13): it is a description of manner, not a deprivation.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 9-14

The sutras (p. 34): the native "will be handsome in appearance, full of glory, wealthy and easily satisfied"; in his 18th year the king appoints him commander-in-chief, which the commentator reads as a distinguished professional achievement by official favour and calls "difficult to swallow" as written. With a malefic, uneducated; with benefics, highly educated and wealthy; with only a full Moon in the 2nd, very wealthy and highly educated. The book's list of the 2nd's significations gives education only as the opinion of "many a learned"; this Moon passage is where that opinion is applied. The condition is company: who shares the 2nd with the Moon, or influences it.

The commentator's lordship warning

The commentator adds a warning in his note after Sutras 9-14 (p. 35): "Moon in the second house will not give good results if she is lord of 6th, 8th and 12th", and he assumes throughout that the 2nd lord is well placed. The Moon rules only Cancer, so this happens for exactly three Ascendants: Aquarius rising (Cancer is the 6th), Sagittarius rising (the 8th) and Leo rising (the 12th). For Sagittarius rising BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the Moon's 8th lordship is not evil, so the two sources part company on one of the three.

The phase question, made concrete

Saravali's full-Moon clause and BPHS's benefic test both point to the Moon's phase. A note by the BPHS translator after Ch. 3 Sl. 11, attributed to the Yavanas and to his translation of Saravali, grades the Moon by its distance ahead of the Sun: medium strength to 120 degrees, very auspicious from 120 to 240, without strength from 240 back to 0. Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17 says the same in lunar days. The full Moon falls at 180 degrees, in the middle of the strongest band.

So "a full Moon in the 2nd" is not a separate rule from the strength bands; it is their peak. A Moon in the last third of the cycle, the "very little" band, is the case BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts as a malefic, and by Ch. 13 Sl. 2 a malefic in the 2nd is read against wealth. The translator's note adds one escape: a waning Moon joined or aspected by a benefic turns benefic. The Moon phase calculator gives the elongation for your birth moment.

This app counts the Moon a benefic whatever its phase, so none of its tests switch on this. Its planet-in-house line turns on dignity, not on phase; the phase appears only in the muhurat scorer and the daily reading.

BPHS Ch. 13, applied to a Moon in Dhana

Ch. 13, the 2nd-house chapter, is thirteen slokas of testable conditions. Several touch a Moon in the 2nd.

  • Sl. 1-2: the 2nd lord in the 2nd, an angle or a trine promotes wealth; in the 6th, 8th or 12th, decline. And the occupant test: a benefic gives wealth. With the Moon in the 2nd, the 2nd lord is the lord of the Moon's sign.
  • Sl. 10: the 2nd lord in its own sign or exalted looks after its people, helps others and becomes famous. For Gemini rising the Moon is the 2nd lord in Cancer, its own sign, in the 2nd.
  • Sl. 12-13: a strong 2nd lord gives beautiful eyes; the 2nd and its lord both joined by malefics give untruthful speech. The eye statement is a classical association, not a diagnosis.
  • Sl. 6-8: the poverty combinations need the 2nd lord and the 11th lord both badly placed and a malefic in the 2nd. A waxing Moon in the 2nd is a benefic occupant, which removes one of the three conditions.

The 2nd and 11th are a pair in BPHS. Ch. 22 Sl. 6, from the 11th-house chapter, names the Moon in the 2nd directly: Jupiter in the 11th, the Moon in the 2nd and Venus in the 9th gives "6000 Nishkas", one of the gain combinations. It is a three-planet pattern; all three must hold. The 11th house page sets out the rest of that chapter.

BPHS Ch. 44 makes the 2nd the stronger of the two Marak Bhavas, and names malefics placed there among the Marakas. A waning Moon, counted a malefic, would fall under that wording; a waxing one would not. This app does not compute lifespan or apply the Marak rule; the label is reported only because the texts use it.

Rising signs: dignity and lordship

Houses here are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Moon is in your 2nd when it occupies the sign after your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules Cancer only, so it rules one house in every chart. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 2nd; the table keeps their clauses about spouses, as the text's statements.

Dignity is dignityOf() with no chart (natural relation only); lordship from SIGN_LORDS; Ch. 24 rows checked against BPHS (bphs.txt 1759-2066).

Read down, the column shows the angles, trines and the 11th feeding resources, the 8th lord draining them, and the 3rd lord lacking effort. Set against the commentator's warning, the three rows he names behave differently in BPHS. Sl. 86 (Sagittarius, 8th lord) is the hardest row in the table, even though Ch. 34 excuses the Moon's 8th lordship. Sl. 134 (Leo, 12th lord) is mixed: spending, yet sweet speech and virtue. Sl. 62 (Aquarius, 6th lord) is not a loss at all in BPHS; it gives speech and a life abroad.

Two rows where everything agrees

  • Gemini rising: the Moon is the 2nd lord in its own sign in the 2nd. Ch. 13 Sl. 1 (the lord in its own house promotes wealth), Sl. 10 (the lord in its own sign looks after its people), Ch. 24 Sl. 14 (wealthy and proud, with two or more wives and no progeny) and the app's favourable line all apply. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 call the Moon the prime killer for this Ascendant "depending on association": the same lordship that rules wealth rules the stronger Maraka house.
  • Aries rising: the Moon is exalted in Taurus and rules the 4th, an angle. Ch. 24 Sl. 38 gives pleasures, wealth and family life. Ch. 34 does not name the Moon for Aries rising.

Libra rising is the reverse case: the Moon is debilitated in Scorpio, yet as 10th lord in the 2nd Sl. 110 is among the warmest rows, and Ch. 34 says the Moon causes Raj Yoga with Mercury for Libra rising. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale every result by strength.

Where the 2nd lord goes decides more

With the Moon in your 2nd, the 2nd lord is the lord of the Moon's sign, and BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 13-24 read that lord through the twelve houses. That is the second table to read for this placement.

2nd lord inBPHS Ch. 24Reading
1stSl. 13Sons and wealth; inimical to the family, lustful, hard-hearted; does others' jobs
2ndSl. 14Wealthy and proud; two or more wives; bereft of progeny
3rdSl. 15Valorous, wise, virtuous, lustful and miserly with a benefic; a heterodox with a malefic
4thSl. 16All kinds of wealth; exalted and with Jupiter, "equal to a king"
5thSl. 17Wealthy; the children intent on earning
6thSl. 18Gain through enemies with a benefic; loss through them, and mutilation of the shanks, with a malefic
7thSl. 19Addicted to others' wives; a doctor; with a malefic, a wife of questionable character
8thSl. 20Abundant land and wealth; limited marital felicity; no happiness from the elder brother
9thSl. 21Wealthy, diligent, skilful; unwell early, happier later
10thSl. 22Libidinous, honourable and learned; many wives and much wealth; bereft of filial happiness
11thSl. 23All kinds of wealth; diligent, honourable, famous
12thSl. 24Adventurous, short of wealth, an eye on others' wealth; the eldest child will not keep him happy
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 13-24 (bphs.txt 1782-1806), every clause kept; harsh clauses are the text's statements, not forecasts.

BPHS disagrees with itself here: Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 reads the 2nd lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th as decline, while Ch. 24 makes the 6th conditional on company and gives the 8th "abundant land and wealth". And every poverty sloka in Ch. 13 (Sl. 6-8) needs the 11th lord damaged as well. For the Moon in the 2nd, the practical point is that the lord of the Moon's sign carries the wealth reading, and the Moon's own verses describe the occupant.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Moon's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 2nd is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. Phase, company and the commentator's lordship warning are not part of the test.

The Moon's dignity outside Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 with the sign's lord. Its natural friends are the Sun and Mercury and it has no natural enemies. The temporary half comes from the chart: the lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the Moon is a temporary friend, elsewhere a temporary enemy. In the code read for this page dignityOf() is given the chart, so:

  • Always favourable: Aries rising (Moon exalted in Taurus) and Gemini rising (Moon in Cancer).
  • Never favourable: Libra rising (Moon debilitated in Scorpio).
  • For the other nine: favourable if the sign lord sits 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Moon. Otherwise the Moon is Neutral (Taurus, Cancer and Leo rising, where the lord is Mercury or the Sun) or an Enemy sign (the other six), and the testing line prints.

Note that Leo rising, one of the commentator's three, can still print the favourable line: the Moon in Virgo is Friendly whenever Mercury is in a temporary-friend position. The engine's line and the commentator's warning measure different things. The dasha panel's dashaQuality() is stricter: good only for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign, challenging for debilitated, enemy sign or a dusthana, neutral otherwise. The Moon Mahadasha page sets that out.

Lunar yogas from a Moon in the 2nd

The yogas BPHS Ch. 37 counts from the Moon shift with it. With the Moon in the 2nd, the 2nd from the Moon is your 3rd house and the 12th from the Moon is your Lagna. So Sunapha forms with a planet other than the Sun in your 3rd, Anapha with one in your 1st, and Durudhura with planets in both. Adhi Yoga (benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon) looks at your 7th, 8th and 9th houses; Gaj Kesari, as coded here, at Jupiter in your 2nd, 5th, 8th or 11th, or in an angle of the chart, with a benefic joining or aspecting it. The yogas calculator reports whichever form.

The engine detects Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura only from Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, and Kemadruma only when all three of its strict conditions hold. BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 and Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 30 grade the Moon by its house from the Sun, a kendra giving little and an apoklima much; the app does not score that rule.

Strength, aspect and the wealth division

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Moon's directional strength from the 10th house: zero there, full in the 4th. The 2nd is two houses short of the 4th, and this app's even interpolation gives it about two-thirds of the maximum. As a Panaphara the 2nd gives half of Kendradi Bal. The Shad Bala calculator shows the figures.

From the 2nd the Moon aspects the 8th; aspectedHouses('moon', 2) returns [8]. The engine counts the Moon as a benefic, so its aspect raises the Shad Bala of any planet in your 8th. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for it. See the 8th house.

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 says wealth is read from the Hora, the D2, so the 2nd and the Hora are read together. BPHS Ch. 6 splits every sign into a Sun half and a Moon half, so the Hora is one of the divisions where the Moon has a defined role. The Hora (D2) calculator shows which half each planet is in.

Timing

The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years; inside it each Antardasha lasts as many months as its lord has Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 16-22 describe a good Moon dasha when the Moon is exalted or in its own sign, joined or aspected by benefics and fully powerful, and add "extraordinary gains of wealth and luxuries, if such a Candr is in Dhan Bhava". Sl. 23-26 give the other side, beginning with a waning or debilitated Moon and loss of wealth. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.

For Gemini rising the Moon is also the 2nd lord, and BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 2nd lord's dasha "distress and possibility of death", the Marak idea as a dasha rule; this app keeps the life area and drops the death language: "financial and family matters - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha". The sub-period chapters use the 2nd both ways: a sub-lord placed in Dhan is among the good positions, while a sub-lord ruling Dhan is flagged for bodily distress.

Two framing rules bear on when within the period results arrive. Sl. 3-4: a planet in the first ten degrees of its sign gives its dasha results at the start, in the middle ten in the middle, in the last ten at the end; the Moon is never retrograde, so the order is never reversed for it. Saravali Ch. 41 Sl. 9 says the Sun ripens the effects of a dasha and the Moon sustains them, and Sl. 17-18 call the transiting Moon at the start of a period helpful in a friendly or exaltation sign, in an Upachaya, or in the 5th, 9th or 7th from the dasha lord.

BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 51-52 read Venus and the Moon in the 2nd at the start of a period as "acquisition of a kingdom", but that verse belongs to the sign-based dashas and should not be carried into Vimshottari. Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar; Saturn's Sade Sati, counted from the Moon, crosses your 1st, 2nd and 3rd houses with this placement.

Why testing: Mercury, lord of Virgo, is in Aries, the 8th sign from the Moon, a temporary enemy. A natural friend that is a temporary enemy gives Neutral, so the Moon does not reach Friendly. Mercury one sign earlier, in Pisces, would have been the 7th from the Moon and still Neutral; in Taurus, the 9th, still Neutral; in Gemini or Cancer, Friendly.

What the texts add. The Moon is about 183 degrees ahead of the Sun, effectively full and in Saravali's strongest band, so Saravali's full-Moon clause fits. With Leo rising it rules the 12th: Ch. 24 Sl. 134, and the commentator's warning. The 2nd lord, Mercury, is in the 9th, a trine, which Ch. 13 Sl. 1 counts as promoting wealth, and Ch. 24 Sl. 21 reads well; Mercury is also the 11th lord here. Ch. 22 Sl. 6 is not met: Jupiter is in the 11th but Venus is in the 7th, not the 9th. The Moon's aspect falls on the Sun in Pisces, the 8th. No other planet shares the 2nd, so the Bhrigu Sutras' company clause has nothing to work on. The Moon sits at 29.38 degrees, in the last ten degrees of Virgo, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 places its dasha results toward the end of the period. The page lists the factors and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm the Moon is in the sign after your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Find the Moon's phase: near full is Saravali's affluent case; the last third of the cycle is BPHS's malefic Moon.
  3. Check the Moon's company in the 2nd: benefics for education, a malefic against it, in the Bhrigu Sutras.
  4. Find the house the Moon rules. If it is the 6th, 8th or 12th, the commentator's warning applies.
  5. Find the 2nd lord (the lord of the Moon's sign) and the 11th lord, and apply BPHS Ch. 13.
  6. Read the 2nd with the Hora chart, as BPHS Ch. 7 asks.

Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.

What it does not mean

  • "A Moon in the 2nd means wealth." The verses lean that way, but BPHS judges the house by its lord and the 11th lord too, and the commentator withdraws the good results for three rising signs.
  • "Any Moon is a benefic here." BPHS counts the waning Moon a malefic; Saravali's strongest band runs from 120 to 240 degrees.
  • "Few words means poor speech." Saravali pairs "of few words" with affluence.
  • "Maraka means danger." This app applies no Marak rule; the label belongs to a longevity method that weighs many factors.
  • "The 2nd from my Moon in transit is my 2nd house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.

Questions about the Moon in the 2nd

Is the Moon in the 2nd house good for money?
The Moon verses say so: Saravali gives happiness, friends and wealth, affluence with a full Moon; the Bhrigu Sutras give wealth and contentment. BPHS reads the 2nd mainly through its lord and the 11th lord.
Which rising signs does the commentator warn about?
Aquarius, Sagittarius and Leo, where the Moon rules the 6th, 8th or 12th. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the Moon's 8th lordship is not evil, so the sources disagree about Sagittarius.
Does the Moon in the 2nd affect education?
In the Bhrigu Sutras, by company: highly educated with benefics, uneducated with a malefic. The app's favourable line mentions recognition through education or institutions.
What does the Moon aspect from the 2nd?
The 8th house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; none of the three texts gives a separate verse for it.
Why is my Moon in the 2nd marked testing?
Its dignity is not Exalted, Own or Friendly. Outside Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio, that depends on where the lord of the Moon's sign sits relative to the Moon.
Which divisional chart goes with this house?
BPHS Ch. 7 says wealth is read from the Hora (D2), which splits each sign into a Sun half and a Moon half. The 2nd and the Hora are read together.
Is the Moon's dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 adds unusual gains for a strong Moon in the 2nd. This app grades the dasha by dignity and house only.
