A chart is read from three reference points: the Lagna, the Moon and the Sun. BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 11 tells the reader to judge the effects of the Lagna from the Moon as well, which is why so much of a Vedic reading is done twice. A Moon in the 1st house collapses the first two into one sign. The rising sign is your Moon sign, the houses from the Lagna are the houses from the Moon, and every Moon-based reading lands on the same houses as the Lagna-based one.
That structural fact matters as much as any verse about the placement. The verses themselves split by sign: Saravali reads the rising Moon well in Cancer, Taurus or Aries and harshly elsewhere, and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator says the harsh readings are meant for a weak or waning Moon. This page sets out both, the rising-sign layer, and how this app's engine reads the placement. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 1st house, Tanu Bhava.
Where these readings come from
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Saravali's and the Bhrigu Sutras' 1st-house verses are mostly about the body and temperament; those phrases are what a text says, not medical advice or forecasts.
Saravali splits the verdict by sign
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 14 (p. 101): in Cancer, Taurus or Aries the native "will be liberal, beautiful, rich and enjoying pleasures greatly"; in the other signs he "will be intensely passionate, base, deaf, distressed, dumb and will decline (in prosperity)". These are the text's statements, not forecasts. The verse is a clear example of a principle BPHS states in Ch. 12: an occupant is judged by its condition. The Moon sloka gives opposite readings for three signs and for the other nine.
Two of Saravali's three good signs are the Moon's own dignities: Taurus is its exaltation and Cancer its own sign. Aries is not a dignity of the Moon at all; its lord Mars is neutral to the Moon. Scorpio, its debilitation, is among the nine harsh signs. Since the Moon is in the 1st only when it occupies the rising sign, Saravali's split is a split by Ascendant: Aries, Taurus and Cancer rising on one side, the other nine on the other.
The Bhrigu Sutras and their commentator on the same split
Sutras 1-8 (p. 32): the native "will be very handsome looking but unsteady mentally", will have bodily troubles, will be happy at watery places and will travel much in his 15th year. In Aries, Taurus or Cancer he will be versed in the shastras, wealthy, happy and soft-spoken, of soft skin and strong build, "but he will not be intelligent". Aspected by benefics, the Moon makes him powerful, wise, intelligent, healthy, a clever talker and wealthy. If the Lagna lord is weak he suffers ill health; if the Lagna lord has a benefic aspect, his health is good.
The commentary (pp. 32-33) adds three points. First, the sutras, Saravali and Chamatkar Chintamani all single out Aries, Taurus and Cancer as the good signs, though the commentator doubts Taurus, quoting Bhavartha Ratnakar, and wants a waxing or full Moon for full results. Second, he notes that Brihat Jataka's harsh reading of the rising Moon (mute, insane, deaf, servile) applies to a weak or waning Moon. Third, he expects a Moon in Scorpio, Libra or Pisces in the 1st to do well because it would then rule the 9th, 10th or 5th house.
The third point is a lordship argument and it overrides the sign argument in one case. Scorpio is the Moon's debilitation and one of Saravali's harsh signs, yet for Scorpio rising the Moon rules the 9th, the house of fortune, and BPHS Ch. 34 calls it auspicious and a Yoga Karaka for that Ascendant. The three sources do not settle which consideration wins, and this page does not either.
| Source | Reading | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 14 | Liberal, attractive, well-off | Only in Cancer, Taurus or Aries; harsh in the other nine signs |
| Bhrigu Sutras 1-8 | Handsome, mentally unsteady, fond of watery places; in Aries, Taurus or Cancer learned, wealthy, soft-spoken, not intelligent | Benefic aspect: wise and wealthy; weak Lagna lord: ill health |
| Bhrigu commentary | Aries, Taurus and Cancer the good signs | Harsh readings (Brihat Jataka) apply to a weak or waning Moon |
| Bhrigu commentary on lordship | Scorpio, Libra or Pisces rising do well | Because the Moon then rules the 9th, 10th or 5th |
| This app, phMoon1F | A well-liked, articulate presence, drawn to travel and water, that grows wise and wealthy with the right support | Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly dignity |
| This app, phMoon1U | A restless, changeable mind and health that needs real attention | Any other dignity |
Benefic or malefic: the phase decides
BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 4 says a benefic in the Lagna gives a pleasing appearance and a malefic takes it away, and that the body is comfortable when the Lagna is aspected by or joined with a benefic. Whether the rising Moon is the benefic of that verse depends on its phase. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 lists the decreasing Moon among the malefics, and Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 9 counts the waning Moon a malefic.
"Waning" is not as simple as it sounds. A note by the BPHS translator after Ch. 3 Sl. 11, attributed to the Yavanas and to his own translation of Saravali, measures the Moon's strength by how far it is ahead of the Sun: medium up to 120 degrees, very auspicious from 120 to 240, without strength from 240 back to 0. Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17 states the same in lunar days. So the first five days of the dark fortnight are waning by paksha and strongest by elongation, and the translator's note adds that a waning Moon joined or aspected by a benefic turns benefic.
This is the condition the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator points to when he assigns Brihat Jataka's harsh verdict to a weak or waning Moon. For a Moon in the 1st, it is the most important single check after the sign. The Moon phase calculator reports the Moon's distance ahead of the Sun, its tithi, paksha and illumination for your birth moment.
This app does not switch the Moon to malefic by phase. Its BENEFICS list contains the Moon whatever the phase, so its yoga tests and the aspect part of its Shad Bala always count the Moon as a benefic. The phase is used elsewhere, in the muhurat scorer and the daily reading. A rising Moon near the new Moon is also likely to be combust: the engine flags the Moon combust within 12 degrees of the Sun and sets its Shad Bala position score to zero.
What BPHS Ch. 12 asks of a rising Moon
The 1st house chapter, BPHS Ch. 12, has fifteen slokas. Three of them name the Moon directly or apply to it.
- Sl. 3: bodily health suffers if the Lagna or the Moon is aspected by or joined with a malefic while having no benefic aspect. With the Moon in the Lagna, the two halves of that sentence fall on one sign: a malefic in the 1st joins both at once, and a single benefic aspect on the 1st offsets it for both.
- Sl. 6-7: if Mercury, Jupiter or Venus is in the Lagna with the Moon, or in the 4th, 7th or 10th from the Lagna, the text speaks of royal fortunes, which this page reads as support and standing, not kingship. A Moon in the 1st makes the first clause available: a benefic sharing the rising sign with it.
- Sl. 11: the effects that apply to the Lagna should be judged from the Moon as well. With the Moon in the 1st, that second reading is the first one again.
Ch. 12 opens with the Lagna lord, not with occupants (Sl. 1-2): in an angle or trine, bodily comfort; in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or debilitated, combust or in an enemy's sign, the reverse. With the Moon in the 1st, the Lagna lord is the lord of the Moon's sign. So the planet BPHS opens its chapter with is also the planet that decides the Moon's dignity in this engine, as explained below.
One sign doing two jobs
Because the Moon's sign is the Lagna, everything this app and the texts count from the Moon is counted from the Lagna too. That has consequences across the chart.
- Lunar yogas. Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura (BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 7-10) look at the 2nd and 12th from the Moon, which are now your 2nd and 12th houses. Adhi Yoga looks at benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon, now your 6th, 7th and 8th. Gaj Kesari, as coded here, is Jupiter in an angle from the Lagna or the Moon - the same four houses now - joined or aspected by a benefic and not debilitated, combust or in an enemy sign. The yogas calculator reports all of them.
- Transits. The Gochar rules count from the natal Moon, so with the Moon in the 1st, "the 8th from your Moon" and "your 8th house" are the same sign. Sade Sati, Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon, is Saturn crossing your 12th, 1st and 2nd houses.
- The Sudarshana Chakra. BPHS Ch. 74 reads every house from the Lagna, the Moon and the Sun, but Sl. 19-20 limit it: if two of the three share a sign, the chart is judged from the ordinary birth chart alone. A Moon in the 1st is that case. This app does not compute a Sudarshana Chakra.
- The three pivots. Advanced Predictive Astrology calls the Ascendant, Moon and Sun the three pivots of a chart, body, mind and soul (Vol. II pp. 70-71). With the Moon rising, two of the three occupy one sign.
For readers without a birth time this cuts the other way: the Moon sign calculator works from the date alone, and Parashara treats the Moon as a second Lagna. Someone born with the Moon rising loses less than most when the time is uncertain, because the Moon-based reading already equals the Lagna-based one; what they cannot confirm without the time is that the Moon was rising at all.
Kemadruma and the day-night rule, with the Moon rising
Kemadruma is where the merging of the two reference points becomes concrete. BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 11-13 form it when, the Sun excepted, no graha is with the Moon, in the 2nd or 12th from it, or in a kendra from the Ascendant; Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 2 words it with "or" between its conditions, including empty kendras from the Moon. For most charts BPHS's kendras from the Ascendant and Saravali's kendras from the Moon are different sets of signs. With the Moon in the 1st they are the same four signs, so on that clause the two texts test the same houses. This app takes the strictest reading: no Sunapha, Anapha or Durudhura, no graha in a kendra from the Moon, and no graha aspecting the Moon's house, all at once.
BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 2-4 give a rule split by time of birth: for a day birth, a Moon in its own or a friendly navamsa that receives Jupiter's aspect brings wealth and happiness; for a night birth, the same with Venus in Jupiter's place. With the Moon in the 1st, Jupiter or Venus aspecting the Moon means Jupiter or Venus aspecting the Lagna, which Ch. 12 Sl. 4 separately counts as bodily comfort. The engine does not test the day-night rule, but every input is on your chart.
One more rule counts from the Sun to the Moon. BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 and Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 30 say a Moon in a kendra from the Sun gives little wealth, learning and skill, one in a panaphara a middling amount, and one in an apoklima an excellent amount (the BPHS translation prints "meddling" for the middle case). With the Moon in the 1st, the count is simply from the Sun's house to the 1st. The app scores neither view.
Rising signs: dignity, lordship and the Ch. 24 verses
The Moon is in the 1st when it occupies the rising sign, so the table runs by Ascendant. The Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules one sign, Cancer, and so one house in every chart; BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 1st, and BPHS Ch. 34 gives the Moon a role for each Ascendant.
| Ascendant (Moon's sign) | Natural dignity | Moon rules | BPHS Ch. 24, that lord in the 1st | BPHS Ch. 34 on the Moon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 4th | Sl. 37: learning, virtues, ornaments, land, conveyances, happiness through the mother | Not named |
| Taurus | Exalted | 3rd | Sl. 25: self-made wealth; devout; valorous; intelligent though without formal learning | A malefic; in the Maraka group |
| Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 2nd | Sl. 13: sons and wealth; inimical to his family, lustful, hard-hearted; does others' jobs | The chief Maraka, by association |
| Cancer | Own | 1st | Sl. 1: physical happiness and prowess; intelligent; fickle-minded; two wives and union with other females | Auspicious |
| Leo | Friendly (Sun) | 12th | Sl. 133: a spendthrift; weak constitution; short of wealth and learning | A Maraka, by association |
| Virgo | Friendly (Mercury) | 11th | Sl. 121: genuine, rich, happy, eloquent, always endowed with gains | A malefic |
| Libra | Neutral (Venus) | 10th | Sl. 109: scholarly, famous, a poet; ill health early, happiness later; growing wealth | Causes Raj Yoga, with Mercury |
| Scorpio | Debilitated | 9th | Sl. 97: fortunate, honoured by authority, virtuous, learned, honoured by the public | Auspicious and a Yoga Karaka |
| Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 8th | Sl. 85: lacking physical felicity; prone to wounds; hostile to gods and Brahmins | Not named; 8th lordship not evil for the Moon |
| Capricorn | Neutral (Saturn) | 7th | Sl. 73: goes to others' wives, wicked, skilful, lacking courage, afflicted by windy diseases | A malefic |
| Aquarius | Neutral (Saturn) | 6th | Sl. 61: sickly, yet famous, inimical to his own men, rich, honourable, adventurous, virtuous | A malefic |
| Pisces | Neutral (Jupiter) | 5th | Sl. 49: scholarly, happiness through children; but miserly, crooked, and steals others' wealth | Auspicious |
Read across, the rows show three separate verdicts on one Moon. Taurus rising has the best dignity and a Ch. 34 role as a malefic and Maraka; the worked example below is exactly this case, and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator quotes Bhavartha Ratnakar that a Moon in a Taurus Ascendant is not particularly good for wealth. Scorpio rising has the worst dignity and the best Ch. 34 role. Cancer rising is the one row where sign, Saravali's verse and lordship all point the same way: the Lagna lord in its own sign in the Lagna, which BPHS Ch. 34 calls specially auspicious because the 1st is both an angle and a trine.
Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 add a lordship note specific to the Moon: benefics owning angles lose some of their benefice, and the Moon is ranked the least affected of the four benefics on that count. For Aries, Libra and Capricorn rising the Moon owns an angle (the 4th, 10th and 7th). For Sagittarius rising, where it owns the 8th, Ch. 34 Sl. 7 says 8th lordship is not evil for the Sun or the Moon.
How this app grades a rising Moon
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Moon's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 1st is an angle, so dignity alone decides. The phase, Saravali's sign split and the Bhrigu Sutras' lordship argument are not part of the test.
Dignity in a sign the Moon does not exalt, own or fall in is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 between the Moon and that sign's lord. The natural half is unusually simple for the Moon: the Sun and Mercury are friends and it has no enemies, so every other lord is neutral. The temporary half is read from the chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the Moon is a temporary friend, anywhere else a temporary enemy.
With the Moon in the 1st, the sign lord is the Lagna lord, and "signs from the Moon" are houses from the Lagna. So the engine's rule reduces to one question about the Lagna lord's house. In the code as read for this page, dignityOf() is given the chart, and the result is:
- Always favourable: Taurus rising (exalted) and Cancer rising (own sign).
- Never favourable: Scorpio rising (debilitated).
- For the other nine Ascendants: favourable if the Lagna lord sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th house. If it sits in the 1st with the Moon or in the 5th to 9th, the Moon drops to Neutral (Gemini, Leo, Virgo rising, where the lord is a natural friend) or to Enemy sign (the other six, where the lord is neutral), and the testing line prints.
An earlier state of the code used the natural relation only for the planet-in-house reading, so a Gemini, Leo or Virgo Moon was always Friendly. The runs for this page used the current code, which applies the temporary half.
The dasha panel is stricter. dashaQuality() calls the Moon good only if exalted, Moolatrikona or in its own sign, challenging if debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a dusthana, neutral otherwise. A rising Moon in Taurus or Cancer grades good; in Scorpio, challenging. The Moon Mahadasha page sets out what that grade feeds.
Strength in the Lagna, and the aspect on the 7th
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Moon's directional strength from the 10th house, so it is full in the 4th and zero in the 10th. The 1st sits between them, and this app gives a Moon there 2 of its 4 directional points, an even interpolation that is the engine's own. As an angle, the 1st gives full Kendradi Bal. The Shad Bala calculator shows all components. The Moon is also strong at night (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 35-38), and the engine gives it full time strength for a night birth.
The Moon has only the 7th-sign aspect; BPHS Ch. 26 gives special full aspects to Mars, Jupiter and Saturn alone. From the 1st it aspects the 7th, and aspectedHouses('moon', 1) returns [7]. The engine counts the Moon as a benefic, so its aspect raises the Shad Bala of any planet in your 7th. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for the rising Moon's aspect on the 7th, so this page states none. See the 7th house and the Moon in the 7th.
Timing
The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years, and inside it each Antardasha lasts as many months as its lord has Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 16-22 describe a good Moon dasha when the Moon is exalted or in its own sign, in a kendra, joined or aspected by benefics and fully strong; Sl. 23-26 give the other side, including a waning or debilitated Moon. Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 make any dasha lord favourable in the Lagna, so a Moon in the 1st meets that test by house. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.
For Cancer rising the Moon's dasha is also the Lagna lord's, and BPHS Ch. 48 opens its list of house-lord dashas with "physical well-being in the Dasha of the Lord of Lagn"; this app shows "physical vitality and personal growth" for that period. Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 add that the planet's position at the start of the dasha is to be considered as well as at birth. Saravali Ch. 41 Sl. 9 says the Moon sustains the effects of a dasha, which is why it asks for the transiting Moon at the start of any period to be examined.
How the sub-periods nest is in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, which for this placement is the same as counting from the Lagna.
A worked chart
This page uses a birth on 3 November 2001 at 19:50 IST in Mumbai, also used on the Moon reference page. Re-run through the engine for this page, it gives a Moon in the 1st. It is an illustration of the rules, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Taurus 16.56 deg |
| Moon | Taurus 15.43 deg (Rohini), 1st house, Exalted |
| Saturn | Taurus 19.72 deg, retrograde, 1st house |
| Lagna lord (Venus) | Virgo 29.93 deg, 5th house, Debilitated |
| Jupiter, Rahu | Gemini, 2nd house |
| Mercury | Virgo 29.96 deg, 5th house |
| Sun | Libra 17.35 deg, 6th house |
| Moon ahead of the Sun | 208.08 deg |
| House line | Favourable: phMoon1F |
| dashaQuality for the Moon | Good |
Why favourable: the Moon is exalted in Taurus, which settles it before any friendship is consulted. Taurus is one of Saravali's three good signs for a rising Moon. The Moon is 208 degrees ahead of the Sun: waning by paksha (Krishna Tritiya) and inside Saravali's strongest band by elongation, so the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator's "weak or waning" condition is met by one definition and not by the other.
What the other layers add. With Taurus rising the Moon rules the 3rd: Ch. 24 Sl. 25, and Ch. 34's malefic and Maraka role. Saturn, a malefic, shares the Lagna and the Moon's sign; nothing aspects Taurus in this chart, so Ch. 12 Sl. 3's condition (a malefic joined with the Lagna or Moon and no benefic aspect) is met on this whole-sign count. Venus, the Lagna lord, is debilitated in the 5th, a trine. Jupiter in the 2nd from the Moon forms Sunapha, which the engine reports. The Moon's aspect falls on Scorpio, the 7th, which is empty. The page lists these and does not net them.
Checking your own rising Moon
- Confirm the Moon is in your rising sign in the birth chart calculator. If the Ascendant degree is close to a sign boundary, confirm the birth time first.
- Note the sign: Taurus, Cancer or Aries are Saravali's good signs; Scorpio is the debilitation.
- Find the Moon's distance ahead of the Sun and place it in Saravali's three bands.
- Find the Lagna lord's house: it decides both BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 and this engine's dignity verdict.
- Check what joins or aspects the 1st: a malefic without a benefic aspect is Ch. 12 Sl. 3; Mercury, Jupiter or Venus with the Moon is Sl. 6-7.
- Read the house the Moon rules from the Ch. 24 table and its Ch. 34 role.
- Remember that every Moon-based yoga and transit now counts from your Lagna as well.
How positions are computed is on the methodology page; the books are listed on the sources page.
Over-readings
- "A rising Moon makes a person emotional." The Bhrigu Sutras do say "unsteady mentally", which their commentator ties to the Moon's waxing and waning; Saravali's line is about liberality, appearance and means, split by sign. Neither is a statement about you.
- "A Krishna Paksha Moon in the 1st is weak." By Saravali Ch. 5, the first five days of the dark fortnight are the Moon's strongest band.
- "An exalted rising Moon is good for everything." Exaltation answers how well the Moon is placed; Ch. 34 makes it a malefic and Maraka for Taurus rising.
- "A Scorpio rising Moon is ruined." It is debilitated, and the same Moon is the 9th lord and a Yoga Karaka by Ch. 34.
- "The app's favourable line means the mind is steady." The line rests on dignity only.
Questions about the Moon in the 1st
- Is the Moon in the 1st house good?
- Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 14 says so in Cancer, Taurus or Aries and reads it harshly in the other nine signs. The Bhrigu Sutras give handsome looks and an unsteady mind, with learning and wealth in those three signs. Their commentator applies the harsh readings to a weak or waning Moon, and expects Scorpio, Libra or Pisces rising to do well by lordship.
- Does the phase of the Moon matter here?
- Yes, in the texts. BPHS and Saravali count a waning Moon as a malefic, and Ch. 12 Sl. 4 reads a benefic and a malefic in the Lagna oppositely. Saravali Ch. 5 measures strength by the Moon's distance ahead of the Sun. This app counts the Moon a benefic always.
- Why does the app show the testing line for my rising Moon?
- Because its dignity is not Exalted, Own or Friendly. Outside Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio, that turns on where your Lagna lord sits: in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th it is Friendly; elsewhere Neutral or Enemy.
- What does a rising Moon aspect?
- The 7th house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; none of the three texts gives a separate verse for it.
- If my Moon is in the 1st, is my Moon sign my rising sign?
- Yes. That is what the placement means, and it is why every Moon-based reading, from lunar yogas to Sade Sati, falls on the same houses as the Lagna-based one.
- Which Ascendant gives the most consistent reading?
- Cancer rising: the Moon is the Lagna lord in its own sign, which Saravali's verse, BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 1 and Ch. 34 all read well.
- When would the placement show most?
- Classically in the Moon's ten-year Mahadasha and its sub-periods. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 count a dasha lord in the Lagna as favourable.
