Planet in house

What the classical texts say about the Moon in the 3rd house: Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras on siblings and means, BPHS Ch. 14 on a benefic in Sahaja and on the Moon's gender, the dasha verse that names the Moon in the 3rd, rising-sign lordship, and how this app grades it.

The 3rd house is where the classical texts reward the hard planets. It is an Upachaya, a house of growth, and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentary calls it an accepted principle that natural malefics do well there. The Moon is not a malefic, unless it is waning. So the Moon in the 3rd sits in a house built for a different kind of planet, and the verses on it read accordingly: warm on siblings and temperament, cooler on money.

Saravali gives the native a protective attitude to co-born, a cheerful temper, valour and learning. The Bhrigu Sutras give siblings and intelligence, but weak finances and misfortune. BPHS has a sibling verse that names a lone Moon in the 3rd, and a dasha verse that does the same. This page sets them out with the rising-sign layer and the app's reading. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 3rd house, Sahaja Bhava.

Sources, and siblings

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Verses about the number, sex and survival of siblings come from an era of very different families; they are described as a record and not applied, and this app computes no sibling count.

What the 3rd house holds

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4 lists valour, servants or attendants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction (Upadesh), journeys and the death of a parent. Ch. 32 narrows the family meaning to younger brothers and sisters and names Mars as the house's fixed significator (Sl. 31-34). The Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list (p. 14) extends it with memory, short travel, communications, writing and contracts; this page treats that longer list as later practice and Parashara's list as the core.

The texts speak about the 3rd in two voices. As a place it is an Upachaya (with the 6th, 10th and 11th) and an Apoklima, where hard planets do well. As a lordship it is on BPHS Ch. 34's short list of troublesome houses: a planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, the 3rd being the mildest of the three. BPHS Ch. 44 also makes the 3rd one of the two houses of longevity, with the 8th. Occupation and ownership are different statements, and both matter for the Moon.

The two Moon verses

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 16

The verse (p. 101): the native "will protect his co-born, be always delighted, valorous and will be endowed with learning, robes and food". Every clause is favourable. Saravali's 3rd-house verses have a pattern: the natural malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn: Sl. 4, 28, 76) all receive courage and two of them lose siblings in the same breath. The Moon receives courage and protects its siblings instead.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 15-18

The sutras (p. 35): an average number of sisters and a good number of brothers; rheumatic troubles; negligible agricultural output; misfortune; in the 24th year a government penalty and loss of wealth; loss of cattle; a backbiter, but intelligent. The body and age lines are the text's statements, not forecasts or medical advice. The commentator (p. 35) reads the money clauses as one theme, being unfortunate, says things improve if the Moon is in Taurus or Cancer, and adds that siblings "are not damaged" by the Moon here.

The money clauses are the costs in either verse, and they have an echo in the app's testing string, which speaks of financial setbacks "despite real underlying intelligence". Elsewhere in this house the Bhrigu Sutras return to one condition: under Mercury (Sutras 25-31) a strong 3rd lord makes the brothers long-lived and a weak one makes them suffer; under Venus (Sutras 20-22) a 3rd lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or with malefics, means loss of brothers. The occupant is never the whole answer.

BPHS Ch. 14: a benefic in Sahaja, and the Moon's gender

Ch. 14, the 3rd-house chapter, is fifteen slokas, almost all about siblings. Its base rule (Sl. 1) is that a 3rd house joined or aspected by a benefic gives co-born and courage. A waxing Moon in the 3rd is that benefic, so the placement meets Sl. 1 by itself. A waning Moon is counted a malefic (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11), and then Sl. 3 becomes relevant: the 3rd lord and Mars with a malefic, or in a malefic's sign, bring "destruction at once of co-born" in the text's words.

Sl. 4 reads the sex of younger siblings from the gender of planets and signs: female planets in the 3rd or a female 3rd lord indicate sisters, male ones brothers, a mix both, and the verse ends by requiring strength to be assessed first. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 19 makes the Moon female. Sl. 12-13 name the Moon directly: a lone Moon in the 3rd aspected by male planets gives younger brothers, and the aspect of Venus gives younger sisters. The same slokas include a combination of the 12th lord, Mars and Jupiter with the Moon in the 3rd that gives a single co-born, and the translation notes that some manuscripts read the 11th lord instead.

This page treats all of Ch. 14's counting and gender verses the same way: they describe large families of another era, the manuscripts vary, and the chapter itself ends by requiring strength to be estimated before anything is announced (Sl. 15). This app does not turn them into a count or a prediction, and this page reports them as the record of what the text contains.

Sl. 5-6 give the most usable rule in the chapter: happiness in sibling matters when Mars or the 3rd lord is in an angle, a trine, exaltation or friendly divisions; "destruction of co-born" when the 3rd lord and Mars are together in the 8th. With the Moon in your 3rd, the 3rd lord is the lord of the Moon's sign, so the planet Sl. 5-6 ask about is also the one that decides the Moon's dignity in this engine.

Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 21-24 add a sign-first rule: a 3rd that is a benefic's sign and holds benefics gives happiness from co-born; a malefic's sign holding a malefic, the reverse. The Moon in the 3rd in a benefic's sign (Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius or Pisces) fits the first half. The Drekkana (D3) calculator builds the division BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to "happiness through co-born".

Phase decides which verse applies

Because Ch. 14 turns on benefic or malefic, the Moon's phase decides which of its verses is in play. The texts measure it by the Moon's distance ahead of the Sun, in three bands (a note by the BPHS translator after Ch. 3 Sl. 11, attributed to the Yavanas, and Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17 in lunar days).

Moon ahead of the SunTithisStrength (Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17)
0 to 120 degShukla 1-10Medium
120 to 240 degShukla 11 to Krishna 5Exceedingly strong
240 to 360 degKrishna 6 to AmavasyaVery little
From Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17 and the BPHS translator's note. The note adds that a waning Moon joined or aspected by a benefic turns benefic.

A Moon in the 3rd from the middle band is the full benefic Ch. 14 Sl. 1 asks for. One in the last band is the case BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts as a malefic, and the Upachaya principle, which favours malefics in this house, then applies to it in a different way. None of the three texts says how a weak Moon in the 3rd is read under the Upachaya rule, so this page does not say either.

Mars, the Moon and two significations

Mars is the fixed significator of the 3rd (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34), so the house is read through three things: the house, its lord and Mars. Mars also shares a role with the Moon elsewhere in BPHS. Ch. 32 Sl. 18-21: the stronger of the Moon and Mars indicates the mother. A Moon in the 3rd is therefore one of the mother's two candidate significators sitting in the house whose karaka is the other. None of the three texts draws a conclusion from that, and this page does not. See Mars in the 3rd house for the karaka in its own house.

The 3rd also has a moveable significator. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 13-17 rank the planets by degree to produce the Chara Karakas, and the third is the Bhratru Karaka, which this app's Char Karakas calculator labels "Siblings & courage". If your Moon happens to be the Bhratru Karaka as well, it is both occupant and significator of the house; that depends on degrees, not on the house.

Rising signs: dignity and lordship

Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Moon is in your 3rd when it occupies the third sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules Cancer, so it rules one house in every chart. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 3rd; valour and siblings run through most of them.

Dignity is dignityOf() with no chart (natural relation only); lordship from SIGN_LORDS; Ch. 24 rows checked against BPHS (bphs.txt 1762-2069); harsh clauses are the text's statements, not forecasts.

The column follows the house classes: the lords of the 1st, 4th, 9th and 10th bring valour and good sibling relations into the 3rd; the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th take courage or sibling happiness away. For the Moon, that puts Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius rising on the hard side by lordship.

Three rows worth a second look

  • Taurus rising: the Moon is the 3rd lord in its own sign in the 3rd. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 2 counts the 3rd lord in the 3rd (with Mars) as a good condition, and Ch. 24 Sl. 27 is the cleanest sibling row in the chapter. Against that, Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the 3rd lord gives evil effects, and Sl. 23-24 list the Moon among the malefics for Taurus rising.
  • Virgo rising: the Moon is debilitated in Scorpio, a malefic's sign, which is Ch. 14 Sl. 3's condition, yet as 11th lord in the 3rd Sl. 123 reads well. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 give a planet full, half or a quarter of its results by strength.
  • Pisces rising: the Moon is exalted in Taurus and rules the 5th, a trine; Ch. 34 calls it auspicious for this Ascendant. Sl. 51 is mixed.

The lord of the Moon's sign, through the houses

Because the 3rd lord is the lord of the Moon's sign, the Ch. 24 verses for the 3rd lord (Sl. 25-36) are the second table to read for this placement.

3rd lord inBPHS Ch. 24Sloka
1stSelf-made wealth, a devotional bent, valour, intelligence without formal learning25
2ndCorpulent, lacking valour and effort, not happy, an eye on others' wives and wealth26
3rdHappiness through co-born, wealth and children, a cheerful nature27
4thHappy, wealthy and intelligent, but a wicked spouse28
5thSons and virtue; a formidable wife if a malefic joins or aspects29
6thEnmity with co-born, affluence, strained relations with the maternal uncle, dear to the maternal aunt30
7thService to those in authority; unhappy early, happy at the end31
8thA thief, living by serving others; the verse also names a place of death (the royal gate)32
9thLack of paternal bliss, fortune through the wife, progenic and other pleasures33
10thAll kinds of happiness and self-made wealth; interested in nurturing wicked females34
11thAlways gains in trading, intelligent though not literate, adventurous, serves others35
12thSpends on evil deeds, a wicked father, fortunate through a female36
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 25-36 (bphs.txt 1793-1817), every clause kept; harsh clauses are the text's statements, not forecasts.

The pattern: the 3rd lord at home is the cleanest sibling reading; the 1st, 10th and 11th carry self-made wealth; the 6th gives the sibling friction Ch. 14 warns of; the 8th matches Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6; and the 2nd, the 12th from the 3rd, removes valour. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then scale every row by the lord's strength.

Yogas that want a malefic here

Several BPHS yogas use the 3rd as the place where a hard planet does no harm. Ch. 39 Sl. 17: benefics in the 1st, 2nd and 4th with a malefic in the 3rd. Ch. 39 Sl. 19: debilitated planets in the 3rd, 6th and 8th with a strong Lagna lord aspecting the Lagna. Ch. 43 Sl. 65, a long-life rule: malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th with benefics in the angles. A Moon in the 3rd, counted a benefic by this app, does not fill the malefic slot in the first or third; a debilitated Moon in Scorpio (Virgo rising) is the kind of planet the second asks for. Ch. 31 adds that an unobstructed Argala aspecting the 3rd denotes happiness from co-born, and the Argala calculator shows whether your 3rd receives it.

How the app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Moon's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 3rd is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The app's 3rd-house lines soften the sources' harder language about siblings and make no claim about anyone's survival.

The Moon's dignity outside Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 with the sign's lord: the Sun and Mercury are natural friends, every other lord neutral, and the temporary half comes from the chart (the lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Moon is a temporary friend). In the code read for this page dignityOf() is given the chart, so:

  • Always favourable: Taurus rising (Moon in Cancer) and Pisces rising (Moon exalted in Taurus).
  • Never favourable: Virgo rising (Moon debilitated in Scorpio).
  • For the other nine: favourable when the sign lord is in a temporary-friend position from the Moon; otherwise Neutral (Aries, Gemini, Cancer rising) or Enemy sign (the other six), and the testing line prints.

dashaQuality() is stricter: good only for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign, challenging for debilitated, enemy sign or a dusthana, neutral otherwise. The Moon Mahadasha page sets that out. Neither test looks at phase, though the texts do.

Lunar yogas, strength and the aspect on the 9th

With the Moon in the 3rd, the 2nd from the Moon is your 4th house and the 12th from the Moon your 2nd. So Sunapha forms with a planet other than the Sun in your 4th, Anapha with one in your 2nd, Durudhura with both. Adhi Yoga looks at benefics in your 8th, 9th and 10th; Gaj Kesari, as coded here, at Jupiter in your 3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th, or in an angle of the chart, with a benefic joining or aspecting it. The yogas calculator reports whichever form.

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Moon's directional strength from the 10th: zero there, full in the 4th. The 3rd is one house short of the 4th, so the engine's even interpolation gives it about five-sixths of the maximum. As an Apoklima it receives a quarter of Kendradi Bal. The Shad Bala calculator shows both.

From the 3rd the Moon aspects the 9th; aspectedHouses('moon', 3) returns [9]. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for it. See the 9th house and the Moon in the 9th.

Timing: the one dasha verse that names this placement

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 23-26 say: "If Candr is in Sahaj, there will be happiness off and on" during her period. It is one of the few dasha verses in BPHS that names a planet in this house. The same passage begins with a waning or debilitated Moon bringing loss of wealth, which, for this placement, sits beside the Bhrigu Sutras' weak finances.

Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 give a general rule that pulls the other way: the dashas of planets placed in the 3rd, 6th and 11th "will prove unfavourable", Rahu and Ketu excepted. The sub-period chapters, by contrast, list the 3rd with the angles, trines and the 11th as a good placement for an Antardasha lord. The specific verses nearly always add a strength or dignity condition; BPHS does not reconcile them further.

For Taurus rising the Moon is also the 3rd lord, and BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 3rd lord's dasha "unfavourable effects"; this app words it "effort-heavy, generally more testing period for courage and sibling matters". The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years, and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates; Antardasha and Pratyantar explains the sub-periods.

For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, not from this house. Saturn's Sade Sati, counted from the Moon, crosses your 2nd, 3rd and 4th houses when the Moon is in the 3rd.

Why favourable: Jupiter, lord of Pisces, is in Gemini, the 4th sign from the Moon, a temporary friend; with a natural relation of neutral, that gives Friend. But the Moon is 340 degrees ahead of the Sun, in the last band of the cycle, which Saravali Ch. 5 calls very little strength and BPHS counts as a malefic Moon. The engine's favourable line and the texts' phase rule point in opposite directions here, which is exactly the case where reading both matters.

What else the texts add. With Capricorn rising the Moon rules the 7th: Ch. 24 Sl. 75, difficulty in the matter of children, and Ch. 34 lists the Moon as a malefic for Capricorn rising. The 3rd lord, Jupiter, is in the 6th, the weak placement Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 and the Bhrigu Sutras warn about for siblings. Mars, the karaka, is in the 2nd. Mercury in the 2nd from the Moon and Mars and Venus in the 12th from it form Durudhura; Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon, but no benefic joins or aspects it, so Gaj Kesari does not form. The Moon's aspect falls on Virgo, the 9th, which is empty. The page lists these and does not net them.

One more count can be read off this chart. BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 and Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 30 grade the Moon by its house from the Sun: a kendra little wealth, learning and skill, a panaphara middling, an apoklima excellent. Here the Sun is in Aries and the Moon in Pisces, the 12th from the Sun, an apoklima. This app does not score that rule.

Timing, from the same run. The Moon is in Revati, a nakshatra of Mercury, and the engine's Vimshottari timeline begins with Mercury, then Ketu and Venus; the Moon's own ten-year period follows the Sun's, roughly 2035 to 2045 on those dates. The Moon at 20.17 degrees is in the last third of Pisces, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 would place its dasha results toward the end of that period. Ch. 47 Sl. 23-26 would read the period as happiness off and on.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm the Moon is in the third sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Find the phase with the Moon phase calculator: a waxing Moon meets BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 as a benefic; a waning one may not.
  3. Find the 3rd lord (the lord of the Moon's sign) and Mars: in an angle, trine or exaltation, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th?
  4. Read the house the Moon rules from the Ch. 24 table.
  5. Note which planets aspect the Moon in the 3rd, if you want to see what Ch. 14 Sl. 12-13 would say; the app does not apply it.
  6. Check the Drekkana for co-born, as BPHS Ch. 7 asks.

Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.

Readings to avoid

  • "The Moon in the 3rd means sisters." Ch. 14 Sl. 4 reads gender from several planets together and requires strength first; Sl. 12-13 make the result depend on aspects.
  • "Benefics are wasted in the 3rd." Ch. 14 Sl. 1 asks first for a benefic in or aspecting the house, and Saravali's Moon verse is wholly favourable.
  • "The Moon in the 3rd means poverty." The Bhrigu Sutras give weak finances and misfortune, which their own commentator expects to improve in Taurus or Cancer; Saravali gives clothes and food. Ch. 24 adds lordship.
  • "The 3rd house is communication." That is the modern significations list; Parashara's is valour, servants, co-born, instruction and journeys.
  • "The 3rd from my Moon in transit is my 3rd house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.

Questions about the Moon in the 3rd

Is the Moon in the 3rd house good?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 16 reads it wholly well: protective of co-born, cheerful, valorous, learned. The Bhrigu Sutras give siblings and intelligence but weak finances, misfortune and some named troubles. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 counts a benefic in the 3rd in its favour.
What does it say about siblings?
Both Moon verses are favourable on siblings. BPHS Ch. 14 has gender and counting verses that name the Moon, which this app does not apply and this page treats as a record of another era.
Is a waning Moon different here?
In the texts, yes: BPHS counts a waning Moon a malefic, which changes which Ch. 14 verse applies. Saravali Ch. 5 grades strength by the Moon's distance ahead of the Sun. This app counts the Moon a benefic always.
What does the Moon aspect from the 3rd?
The 9th house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; none of the three texts gives a separate verse for it.
What happens in the Moon's dasha?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 23-26 give happiness off and on for a Moon in the 3rd. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 list dashas of planets in the 3rd as unfavourable, while the sub-period chapters list the 3rd as a good place. This app grades the dasha by dignity and house.
Does the Moon in the 3rd make a person courageous?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 16 calls the native valorous, and BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 gives courage when a benefic joins or aspects the 3rd. Courage is the first item in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4's list for the house. These are classical classifications, not a description of anyone's character.
Which rising sign gives the best Moon in the 3rd?
By dignity, Taurus rising (Moon in its own Cancer, ruling the 3rd) and Pisces rising (Moon exalted, ruling the 5th). Ch. 34 is kinder to the second.
