What the classical texts say about the Moon in the 9th house: Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras on learning, fortune and the father, the full-Moon clause, Saravali's rules for the house of fortune, the Raj Yogas the Moon can join, and how this app grades it.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

This app's favourable line for the Moon in the 9th calls it "classically one of the Moon's best placements", and the verses it was written from bear that out. Saravali gives devotion to divine and paternal duties, happiness, wealth, intelligence and children. The Bhrigu Sutras give high learning and charity, and, with a full Moon, great fortune and a long-lived father, though they also name a malefic condition under which both parents are lost early.

The conditions sit underneath. The full-Moon clause is a phase condition; Saravali's chapter on the 9th has rules for weak and afflicted planets in the house of fortune; BPHS has a poverty verse that names the Moon in the 9th; and lordship changes the reading by rising sign. This page sets them out with the app's reading. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 9th house, Dharma Bhava.

Sources, and the father

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The texts speak of a parent's long life or early loss; those are conditional classical readings, reported as such, and BPHS Ch. 20's verses on the timing of a father's death are not reproduced. Nothing here is a statement about your father.

The house of fortune

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 10 lists fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines. Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 add the father: "Dharm Bhava and the 9th from Surya deal with one's father", though Ch. 11 Sl. 11 also puts the father in the 10th. Saravali gives the house its own chapter (Ch. 32), calls it Bhagyasthana and says it should be analysed before any other. The Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list (p. 15) adds faith, philosophy, the preceptor, higher education and long journeys. Jupiter is the fixed significator (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34).

The 9th is a trine and the one house that is also cadent (Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7: "The Lord of a Kon will give auspicious results", and the 5th and 9th are "specially for wealth", with the 9th the stronger of the two. Ch. 41 Sl. 28 calls the trines Lakshmi Sthanas and the angles Vishnu Sthanas, and treats a link between their lords as a Raj Yog.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 22

The verse (p. 101): the native "will be devoted to divine and paternal assignments, will be endowed with happiness, wealth, intelligence and sons and will attract the fair sex". Every clause is favourable. The verse lands on the house's religion and its father, and on fortune in the plain sense.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 47-53

The sutras (p. 41): the native "will be highly learned and charitable", will build ponds, tanks and shelters for cows for others, and will be fortunate in children, who will prosper. If the Moon is full, he will be very fortunate and "his father will be long-lived". If the Moon is joined with a malefic or in a malefic's sign, he will be unfortunate "and will suffer loss of his parents early in his life". These are the text's statements, not forecasts.

The full-Moon condition raises the reading; the malefic condition reverses it. The commentator (pp. 41-42) adds two lordship cases: in its own sign the Moon is the 9th lord in the 9th, "a powerful Rajayoga", and exalted in Taurus (Virgo rising) it is the exalted 11th lord in the 9th, "highly beneficial to the native in every respect".

Saravali's 9th-house verses (Ch. 30 Sl. 10, 22, 34, 46, 58, 70, 82) read the Moon with Mercury, Jupiter and Venus well, against Mars and Saturn. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator applies one method throughout this house: ask what a planet owns before reading what it occupies.

Saravali Ch. 32 adds verses for the Moon with company in the 9th (Sl. 36-40, p. 115): with Mars, loss of the mother early, a deformed body with ulcers, and wealth; with Mercury, learning, scholarship, a physical deformity, eminence and fame; with Jupiter, distinction, fortune, riches, happiness and courage; with Venus, diseases, an unchaste wife, a step-mother, and service to a significant person; with Saturn, a native devoid of moral merit and sinful, with a "fallen mother". Sl. 30 gives the Sun and Moon together a short life, eye diseases, riches, fortune and quarrels, and Sl. 28 a full Moon in the 9th with strong Mars, Saturn and Mercury a birth to a king. These are the text's statements, not forecasts.

The full-Moon clause, in degrees

The Bhrigu Sutras attach the best version of the reading to a full Moon. The texts grade the Moon by its distance ahead of the Sun: medium to 120 degrees, very auspicious from 120 to 240, without strength from 240 to 360 (a translator's note to BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11, attributed to the Yavanas, and Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17 in lunar days). The full Moon at 180 degrees is the centre of the strongest band.

A full Moon in the 9th has a geometric consequence: the Sun is opposite it, in the 3rd house. So the full-Moon case of the sutras is a chart with the Sun in the 3rd and the Moon in the 9th, the father's significator in the house of siblings and courage, and the Moon in the father's house. The 9th from that Sun, which BPHS also reads for the father, is the 11th house. The Moon phase calculator gives your birth elongation; this app counts the Moon a benefic whatever its phase.

Saravali's rules for the house of fortune

Saravali Ch. 32's opening and later verses are written for any planet in the 9th. Several apply to the Moon directly.

  • Sl. 2: the house of fortune is the 9th from the Ascendant or from the Moon, the stronger prevailing. With the Moon in the 9th, the 9th from the Moon is your 5th house, so Saravali's second count lands on the other trine.
  • Sl. 3: the house occupied by the 9th lord and the planet occupying the 9th both have a say.
  • Sl. 4: a 9th occupied or aspected by its own lord makes fortune "in his own country"; occupied or aspected by other planets, "the dawn of fortune will be elsewhere". The Moon is the 9th's own lord only for Scorpio rising.
  • Sl. 25: a strong benefic in the 9th gives standing, wealth, righteousness and increased longevity.
  • Sl. 26: a debilitated or combust planet, or a malefic, in the 9th without a benefic aspect leaves the person "devoid of (moral) strength, wealth and fame and be dirty". A Moon debilitated in Scorpio (Pisces rising), or combust near the new Moon, is that case; so, in BPHS's classification, is a waning Moon.
  • Sl. 29: a planet exalted in the 9th gives "an excellent person ... with plentifulness of wealth and gold", raised by a benefic's aspect. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, the 9th for Virgo rising.

Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 6-24 are about Jupiter in the 9th aspected by one, two or all planets, and Sl. 23 limits them to cases with no other aspect. They concern Jupiter, not the Moon, and this page does not apply them, though the Moon aspecting such a Jupiter is named there (Sl. 6-7: "splendourous").

Two BPHS verses that name the Moon here

BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 31 gives one of two combinations for want in the 9th-house chapter: with Saturn in the 9th along with the Moon while the Lagna lord is in fall, "the native will acquire food by begging". Like every verse in that chapter it joins conditions: the Moon and Saturn together in the 9th, and a debilitated Lagna lord. Both of the chapter's want verses (Sl. 30, 31) need three failures at once.

BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 7, in the 11th-house chapter, names the Moon in the same house from a different angle: Jupiter, Mercury and the Moon in the 11th counted from the 11th, which is the 9th house, give "wealth, grains, fortunes, diamonds, ornaments". A Moon in the 9th is one of the three; Jupiter and Mercury must join it. The 11th house page sets out the rest of that chapter.

Ch. 20's other verses are written around the 9th lord, Jupiter and the Lagna lord, and its closing instruction is that the effects are estimated from "the Lords of Lagn and Dharm Bhava". The father verses (Sl. 3-9) turn on the 9th lord, Venus, Jupiter and the Sun.

Rising signs: dignity and lordship

Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Moon is in your 9th when it occupies the ninth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules Cancer only, so it rules one house in every chart, and BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 9th.

What the commentator and Ch. 34 add

  • Scorpio rising: the Moon is the 9th lord in its own sign in the 9th. BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 1 calls one fortunate "if Dharm's Lord is in Dharm Bhava with strength"; Ch. 24 Sl. 105 gives abundant fortunes; Ch. 34 names the Moon a Yoga Karaka for Scorpio rising, with the Sun; and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (p. 42) calls the Moon in its own sign in the 9th "a powerful Rajayoga".
  • Virgo rising: the Moon is exalted in Taurus as 11th lord. Ch. 34 calls the Moon a malefic for Virgo rising, yet the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (p. 42) calls an exalted Moon in the 9th as 11th lord "highly beneficial". Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 29 reads any exalted planet in the 9th well.
  • Pisces rising: the Moon is debilitated in Scorpio but rules the 5th, and Sl. 57 is among the warmest rows. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26 reads a debilitated planet in the 9th without a benefic aspect as loss. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale every row by strength.

Libra rising is the other Ch. 34 pairing: the Moon, the 10th lord, sits in the 9th, Gemini, and Ch. 34 says the Moon and Mercury, the 9th lord, cause Raj Yoga. Mercury joining the Moon in Gemini is the 9th and 10th lords together in a trine.

The 9th lord, through the houses

With the Moon in your 9th, the 9th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 97-108 read that lord through the twelve houses, and nine of the twelve are plainly good, unusually for Ch. 24.

9th lord inBPHS Ch. 24What the verse says
1stSl. 97Fortunate, honoured by the king and the public, virtuous, learned
2ndSl. 98A scholar, dear to all, wealthy, sensuous, happy through wife and sons
3rdSl. 99Happiness from siblings, wealthy, virtuous
4thSl. 100Houses, conveyances, happiness, wealth, devoted to the mother
5thSl. 101Children and prosperity, devoted to elders, charitable, learned
6thSl. 102Meagre prosperity, no happiness from maternal relatives, troubled by enemies
7thSl. 103Happiness after marriage, virtuous and famous
8thSl. 104Not prosperous; no happiness from the elder brother
9thSl. 105Abundant fortunes, virtues and beauty; much happiness from co-born
10thSl. 106A king or equal to one, a minister or army chief
11thSl. 107Financial gains "day by day", devoted to elders
12thSl. 108Loss of fortunes, spending on auspicious acts, poor by entertaining guests
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 97-108 (bphs.txt 1951-1972).

The three weak rows are the three Dusthanas, and even the 12th is gentle: the money goes on good causes. The strongest is the 10th. BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 23-27 add a second scale for the 9th lord, by how many of its divisional charts fall in good dignity, with results from visiting holy places up to being "a synonym of Dharma"; this app does not compute those grades.

Raj Yogas the Moon can join from the 9th

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 make a yoga from an angle lord and a trine lord linked by exchange, conjunction in an angle or trine, or full mutual aspect. This app's yogas calculator flags Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga when the 9th and 10th lords share an angle or trine, Raja Yoga when the 5th and 9th lords share a house, and the general Kendra-Kona yoga for any angle lord and trine lord in one house or in full mutual aspect.

From the 9th the Moon aspects the 3rd. For Scorpio rising the Sun, the 10th lord, in the 3rd and the Moon, the 9th lord, in the 9th aspect each other fully, which meets Ch. 34's mutual-aspect clause for the Sun-Moon pair that Ch. 34 names for that Ascendant. For Libra rising the pairing is the Moon with Mercury; for Pisces rising the Moon is the 5th lord in the other trine.

BPHS Ch. 36 names two more 9th-house yogas. Khadg Yog (Sl. 25-26): the 2nd and 9th lords exchange signs while the Lagna lord is in an angle or trine. For Gemini rising the Moon is the 2nd lord, and in the 9th it sits in Aquarius, Saturn's sign; Saturn, the 9th lord, in Cancer would complete the exchange. Lakshmi Yog (Sl. 27-28): the 9th lord in an angle that is also its Moolatrikona, own or exaltation sign, with a strong Lagna lord. For Scorpio rising the Moon is the 9th lord, but in the 9th it is in a trine, not an angle, so a Moon in the 9th cannot itself form Lakshmi Yog. The app does not flag either by name.

Ch. 34 Sl. 15 adds a limit: a trine lord that also owns an evil house does not make a Raj Yog by mere association. The Moon owns only Cancer, so that limit never falls on the Moon itself, but it can fall on its partner. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh a yoga once found.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Moon's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 9th is a trine, so dignity alone decides. The full-Moon clause and Saravali's rules are not part of the test.

Outside Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio the Moon's dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58: the Sun and Mercury natural friends, every other lord neutral, and the temporary half from the chart (the lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Moon is a temporary friend). In the code read for this page dignityOf() is given the chart, so:

  • Always favourable: Virgo rising (Moon exalted) and Scorpio rising (Moon in Cancer).
  • Never favourable: Pisces rising (Moon debilitated).
  • For the other nine: favourable when the 9th lord, the lord of the Moon's sign, sits in a temporary-friend position from the Moon; otherwise Neutral (Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn rising) or Enemy sign (the other six).

dashaQuality() is stricter: good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign; challenging for debilitated, enemy sign or a dusthana; neutral otherwise. The Moon Mahadasha page sets that out.

Strength, the aspect on the 3rd, and lunar yogas

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives the Moon no directional strength in the 10th and full strength in the 4th. The 9th is one house from the 10th, about one-sixth of the maximum in this engine's even steps, and as an Apoklima it receives a quarter of Kendradi Bal. A Moon in the 9th is therefore one of the best placements by the verses and one of the weakest by these two measures: strength and meaning are measured separately. The Shad Bala calculator shows the figures.

From the 9th the Moon aspects the 3rd; aspectedHouses('moon', 9) returns [3]. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for it. See the 3rd house. For the lunar yogas, the 2nd and 12th from a Moon in the 9th are your 10th and 8th houses; Adhi Yoga looks at benefics in your 2nd, 3rd and 4th; Gaj Kesari, as coded here, at Jupiter in your 3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th, or in an angle of the chart, with a benefic joining or aspecting it.

Timing

The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 16-22 list a Moon in the 11th, 9th or 5th, and a Moon linked with the lord of the 10th, 9th or 4th, among the conditions for a prosperous Moon dasha. Ch. 48 adds that a planet in a trine at the start of its dasha gives favourable results. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.

For Scorpio rising the Moon is also the 9th lord, and BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give that dasha "improvement in the educational sphere, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains of wealth"; this app words it "growth in education, spirituality and unexpected gains". Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that the 9th and 5th lords, and planets joined with them, give wealth in their dashas. Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon.

This app's engine output for 04:00 IST on 15 January 2006 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Scorpio-rising case. An hour earlier the Ascendant was only 1.42 degrees into Scorpio, so the later time keeps the example off the boundary. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.

computeChart, dignityOf, buildPlanetHouseEffects and detectYogas, New Delhi (28.6139, 77.2090).

This chart is almost exactly the Bhrigu Sutras' full-Moon case: the Moon is 186 degrees ahead of the Sun, and the Sun sits opposite in the 3rd. The Moon is the 9th lord in its own sign in the 9th (Ch. 20 Sl. 1; Ch. 24 Sl. 105). The Sun, the 10th lord, and the Moon, the 9th lord, aspect each other fully, the Ch. 34 Sun-Moon pair for Scorpio rising, and the engine lists both in its Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga.

The complications. Saturn, a malefic, shares the 9th with the Moon. Ch. 20 Sl. 31 needs Saturn and the Moon in the 9th and a Lagna lord in fall; Mars, the Lagna lord, is in its own sign, so the verse is not met. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4 now points both ways: the 9th's own lord occupies it, and another planet occupies it too. Sl. 26 asks whether a benefic aspects the malefic in the 9th; Jupiter in Libra aspects Aquarius, Aries and Gemini, and Mercury and Venus in Sagittarius aspect Gemini, so none does. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 40 reads Saturn joining the Moon in the 9th as a native devoid of moral merit, sinful and with a "fallen mother", a statement of the text, not a description of anyone. The 9th from the Sun, for the father, is Virgo, your 11th, where Ketu sits. The page lists these and does not net them.

Two more counts from the same figures. BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 and Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 30 grade the Moon by its house from the Sun; a full Moon is always the 7th from the Sun, a kendra, which those verses read as little wealth, learning and skill, The texts' full-Moon praise for the 9th and their kendra-from-the-Sun rule therefore pull in opposite directions in exactly this chart. And the Moon at 6.55 degrees is in the first ten degrees of Cancer, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 brings its dasha results at the start of the period; here the engine's Vimshottari sequence begins with Saturn.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm the Moon is in the ninth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Find the phase: near full is the Bhrigu Sutras' best case; a full Moon here puts the Sun in your 3rd.
  3. Check Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26 and 29: is the Moon debilitated, combust, exalted? Does a benefic aspect the 9th?
  4. Is Saturn in the 9th with the Moon? Then check the Lagna lord for Ch. 20 Sl. 31.
  5. Find the 9th lord (the lord of the Moon's sign) and the Lagna lord, as Ch. 20 asks.
  6. Look for the 10th or 5th lord linked to the Moon (or to the 9th lord) for the Raj Yogas.
  7. Repeat the count from the Moon, as Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 2 allows: the 9th from the Moon is your 5th.

Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.

Over-readings

  • "A Moon in the 9th guarantees fortune." The verses are favourable; Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26 and BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 31 name the conditions under which the 9th fails.
  • "It means a long-lived father." The Bhrigu Sutras attach that to a full Moon only, and early loss of the parents to a malefic link; this app computes no parent's longevity.
  • "The 9th is strong, so the Moon is strong." The Moon has little directional strength and a quarter of Kendradi Bal here.
  • "The app says favourable, so a Raj Yoga is formed." The yogas need a partner lord.
  • "The 9th from my Moon in transit is my 9th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.

Questions about the Moon in the 9th

Is the Moon in the 9th house good?
Both Moon verses lean favourable: Saravali gives devotion, happiness, wealth, intelligence and sons; the Bhrigu Sutras give learning and charity, and with a full Moon great fortune and a long-lived father, but misfortune with a malefic link.
Why does a full Moon matter here?
The Bhrigu Sutras attach fortune and the father's long life to it. Saravali Ch. 5 puts the full Moon at the centre of its strongest band.
Which rising signs give the strongest Moon in the 9th?
Scorpio rising (9th lord in its own sign; a Yoga Karaka with the Sun) and Virgo rising (Moon exalted; the commentator calls it highly beneficial as 11th lord).
What does the Moon aspect from the 9th?
The 3rd house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect. For Scorpio rising it can complete a mutual aspect with the Sun, the 10th lord.
What if Saturn is in the 9th with the Moon?
BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 31 reads Saturn and the Moon in the 9th with the Lagna lord in fall as "food by begging"; all three conditions are needed. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 40 also reads the Saturn-Moon pair in the 9th harshly. Both are the texts' statements, not forecasts.
Why is my Moon in the 9th marked testing?
Its dignity is not Exalted, Own or Friendly. Outside Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio, that depends on where the lord of the Moon's sign sits from the Moon.
Is the Moon's dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 lists a Moon in the 9th among the conditions for a prosperous Moon dasha. This app grades the dasha by dignity and house.
