The Moon in the 10th house is a placement on which strength and meaning point in opposite directions. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Moon's directional strength from the 10th, so it has none there at all. Yet the verses read it as excellent: Saravali gives a native free of grief, successful and affluent, and the Bhrigu Sutras give high attainment, pious deeds and fame. It is the clearest case that directional strength is a measure of strength, not of meaning.
This page sets out the verses, the condition the Bhrigu Sutras attach (a malefic's company), the two BPHS fame verses that name the Moon in the 10th, and what the rising sign changes. It is the mirror of the Moon in the 4th, where the Moon is strongest by direction. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 10th house, Karma Bhava.
Sources, and the language of kings
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The texts speak of royal favour; this page reads that as authority, rank and recognition from an employer, institution or government. None of it is a promise about your career.
The house of action and honour
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11: authority, place, profession or livelihood, honour, the father, living in foreign lands and debts. Saravali names the house Karma and Mana, honour. BPHS Ch. 21, the house's chapter, names no professions; it judges whether work prospers, is obstructed or stops, and whether fame follows. It is a Kendra and an Upachaya, and BPHS ranks it the most significant of the angles (Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7); Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 add that planets in mutual angles in good dignity become Yoga Karakas, "in Karm Bhava ... significantly so".
Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 adds a rule BPHS does not state there: the Karmasthana is the 10th counted from the stronger of the Ascendant and the Moon, and most of that chapter is written from the Moon. With the Moon in your 10th house, the 10th from the Moon is your 7th house, so Saravali's second count of the house of work lands on the house of partnership.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 23
The verse (p. 102): the native "will not suffer grief, be dutiful, successful in his undertakings, affluent, pure, very strong, valorous and charitable". Every clause is favourable, and the verse has no weak-Moon reversal of the kind Saravali gives the Moon in the 1st or 7th.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 54-60
The sutras (p. 42): the native "will achieve high academic attainments", will be brilliant, pious, famous and kind-hearted; a powerfully disposed 10th lord makes him highly virtuous. If the Moon is joined with or aspected by a malefic, the text gives an illicit relation with a widow in the 27th year and public bitterness over it, sinful deeds, and "obstacles in all spheres of his life". These are the text's statements, not forecasts. The commentator (pp. 42-43) ties the academic line to the Moon's aspect on the 4th, and calls the Moon in its own sign Cancer (Libra rising) the 10th lord in the 10th, "a powerful Rajayoga". Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 81 adds a single line: "The Sun in the 10th indicates income through father, the Moon mother".
A modern note on the full Moon here
Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 25) notes that a "Full Moon in the 10th house has been praised by Saravali and other texts", and gives its own view that a full Moon owning a good house in the meridian, well aspected by a good Venus or Jupiter, will "achieve better results and name than a good Sun in the 10th". It is a modern author's observation, reported as his.

No directional strength, and why it does not decide
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Moon and Venus from the 10th house: subtract the 10th from the planet's longitude, take the result from 360 if over 180, and divide by three. At the 10th the result is zero. This app's Shad Bala gives the Moon none of its 4 directional points in the 10th and all of them in the 4th. The Shad Bala calculator shows the figure.
The Moon and Venus have their least directional strength in the 10th, and yet the Bhrigu Sutras read both there well (Moon Sutras 54-60, Venus Sutras 59-61), each with a malefic clause. A planet can be well placed by signification and weakly placed by direction at once. Directional strength is one of six Shad Bala components, and the 10th, as an angle, gives the Moon full Kendradi Bal at the same time. Phase, dignity and company are separate again.
Phase, and a malefic's company
The modern note on the full Moon points to phase. The texts measure it by the Moon's distance ahead of the Sun, medium to 120 degrees, exceedingly strong from 120 to 240, very little from 240 to 360 (a translator's note to BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 and Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17). A full Moon in the 10th puts the Sun opposite, in the 4th house.
The Bhrigu Sutras' condition is about company rather than phase: a malefic with the Moon in the 10th, or aspecting it. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts a waning Moon as a malefic itself, but the sutra is about other planets. The malefics that can aspect the 10th are any malefic in the 4th by the 7th aspect, Mars from the 7th or 3rd, Saturn from the 8th or 1st, and Jupiter is a benefic. The Moon phase calculator gives the phase; this app's line uses neither phase nor company.
BPHS Ch. 21: two fame verses that name the Moon
Ch. 21 has twenty-two slokas. Two name the Moon in a position a Moon in the 10th can fill.
- Sl. 19, the first of three fame combinations: the Moon in the 10th, with the 10th lord in a trine from the 10th and the Lagna lord in an angle. The 10th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign; a trine from the 10th is the 2nd, 6th or 10th house counted from the Lagna. The Lagna lord must be in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th.
- Sl. 15, good deeds: the 10th lord in the Lagna with the Lagna lord while the Moon is in an angle or trine. A Moon in the 10th meets the last clause by position; the two lords together in the 1st are the rest.
The chapter's own method, stated in its last sloka, is that other effects should be worked out from "the relationship of the Lords of Lagn and of Karm Bhava". Sl. 2: a strong 10th lord, exalted or in its own sign or Navamsa, gives "extreme paternal happiness", fame and good deeds. Sl. 3: a 10th lord "devoid of strength" gives obstructions in work. Sl. 4: the 10th lord with a benefic or in a good house gives steady gain "through royal patronage and in business". With the Moon in the 10th, those verses are about the lord of the Moon's sign, which is also the Bhrigu Sutras' "strong 10th lord".
Amal Yog, and an engine detail
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 5-6: "If there be exclusively a benefic in the 10th from Lagn, or Candr", the result is fame "lasting till Candr and stars exist", honour, charity and virtue. A Moon in the 10th from the Lagna, counted as a benefic and alone in the house, would seem to fit the BPHS wording.
This app's Amala check takes its rule from Chatterjee rather than from BPHS, and its candidate list is the benefics other than the Moon (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury), free of malefic conjunction or aspect. So the engine never reports Amala for a Moon in the 10th; it reports it for one of the other three in the 10th from the Lagna or from the Moon. The engine's rule is stricter than BPHS's wording in requiring freedom from malefic influence. The yogas calculator shows what your chart forms.
Rising signs: dignity and lordship
Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Moon is in your 10th when it occupies the tenth sign from your rising sign; the app does not use the mid-heaven degree as a cusp. The Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules Cancer only, and BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 10th.
| Ascendant | Moon's sign | Natural dignity | Moon rules | BPHS Ch. 24, that lord in the 10th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Capricorn | Neutral (Saturn) | 4th | Sl. 46: royal honours, an alchemist, pleasures, mastery over the five senses |
| Taurus | Aquarius | Neutral (Saturn) | 3rd | Sl. 34: all kinds of happiness and self-made wealth; interested in nurturing wicked females |
| Gemini | Pisces | Neutral (Jupiter) | 2nd | Sl. 22: libidinous, honourable, learned; many wives, much wealth; bereft of filial happiness |
| Cancer | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 1st | Sl. 10: paternal happiness, royal honour, fame, self-earned wealth |
| Leo | Taurus | Exalted | 12th | Sl. 142: expenditure through royal persons; moderate paternal happiness |
| Virgo | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 11th | Sl. 130: honoured by the king, virtuous, intelligent, truthful |
| Libra | Cancer | Own | 10th | Sl. 118: skilful in all jobs, valorous, truthful, devoted to elders |
| Scorpio | Leo | Friendly (Sun) | 9th | Sl. 106: a king or equal to one, or a minister or army chief |
| Sagittarius | Virgo | Friendly (Mercury) | 8th | Sl. 94: devoid of paternal bliss, a talebearer, bereft of livelihood; a benefic aspect stops it maturing |
| Capricorn | Libra | Neutral (Venus) | 7th | Sl. 82: a disobedient wife; religious, with wealth and sons |
| Aquarius | Scorpio | Debilitated | 6th | Sl. 70: well known, happy in foreign countries, a gifted speaker |
| Pisces | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 5th | Sl. 58: a Raj Yog, various pleasures, great fame |
The 10th lifts whatever arrives in it: ten of twelve rows are good, the 8th lord's harm is cancelled by a benefic aspect, and only the 12th lord harms the house outright. The two trine lords give the strongest lines: a Raj Yog for the 5th lord (Pisces rising) and kingship for the 9th lord (Scorpio rising).
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 add the Moon's role for each Ascendant. For the rising signs that put the Moon in the 10th: auspicious for Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rising; a Raj Yoga with Mercury for Libra rising; a malefic for Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising; a Maraka for Gemini rising (the chief one) and Leo rising (by association); not named for Aries and Sagittarius rising, the latter with the Moon's 8th lordship excused. Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 rank the Moon least affected of the four benefics by owning an angle, which matters for Aries (4th), Libra (10th), Capricorn (7th) and Cancer (1st) rising.
The father is a 10th-house matter too. BPHS Ch. 11 puts the father in the 10th and Ch. 21 Sl. 2 opens with "paternal happiness" from the 10th lord, while Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 read the father from the 9th from the Sun, so Parashara consults both. The Moon verses for the 10th do not mention the father; Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 81 ties the Moon in the 10th to income through the mother.
Libra rising, and Chaturashiti-sama
For Libra rising the Moon is the 10th lord in its own sign in the 10th. Ch. 24 Sl. 118 applies; Ch. 34 says the Moon and Mercury cause Raj Yoga for Libra rising; and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (p. 43) calls the Moon in Cancer in the 10th "a powerful Rajayoga" for this Ascendant. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 21 gives a Raj Yog for a 10th lord in its own house aspecting the Lagna; from the 10th the Moon aspects the 4th, not the Lagna, so that verse cannot be met. BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 35-36 make Chaturashiti-sama Dasha appropriate when the 10th lord is in the 10th, and the alternate dashas calculator reports that condition.
Leo rising is the opposite pairing: an exalted Moon in Taurus as 12th lord, the one Ch. 24 row in which a lord harms the 10th. Aquarius rising gives a debilitated Moon as 6th lord, which Sl. 70 reads as reputation and success abroad.
Ch. 21 combinations the Moon can complete as a lord
Several Ch. 21 verses need a particular lord in the 10th. Where the Moon is that lord, a Moon in the 10th supplies one part; the rest must hold too.
- Scorpio rising, Sl. 8: the 9th lord in the 10th while the 10th lord is exalted and with Jupiter gives "honour, wealth and valour". The Moon is the 9th lord, in Leo; the Sun, the 10th lord, would need to be exalted in Aries with Jupiter.
- Virgo rising, Sl. 9-10: the 11th lord in the 10th with the 10th lord in the Lagna gives a happy life. The Moon is the 11th lord, in Gemini; Mercury, the 10th lord, would need to be in Virgo. Sl. 20 adds a fame combination for the 11th lord in the 10th with a strong 10th lord aspecting Jupiter.
- Cancer rising, BPHS Ch. 40 Sl. 13 and Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17: an exchange between the 10th lord and the Lagna lord. The Moon is the Lagna lord, in Aries in the 10th; Mars, the 10th lord, in Cancer would complete the exchange, which Ch. 48 says brings "acquisition of a kingdom" in the dashas of both.
The chapter's verses on work stopping (Sl. 11, 16, 18) and on bad deeds (Sl. 5-7, 17) do not name the Moon.
The 10th lord, through the houses
With the Moon in your 10th, the 10th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 109-120 read it through the houses; nine of twelve are plainly good, the exceptions being the Dusthanas, and even there the 6th and 12th rows call the person skilful.
| 10th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | What the verse says |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 109 | Scholarly, famous, a poet; ill health early and happy later; growing wealth |
| 2nd | Sl. 110 | Wealthy, virtuous, honoured by the king, charitable |
| 3rd | Sl. 111 | Happiness from siblings and servants; valorous, eloquent, truthful |
| 4th | Sl. 112 | Happy, attentive to the mother, owns conveyances, land and houses |
| 5th | Sl. 113 | All kinds of learning, always delighted, wealthy, with children |
| 6th | Sl. 114 | Bereft of paternal bliss; skilful, yet bereft of wealth and troubled by enemies |
| 7th | Sl. 115 | Happiness through the spouse; intelligent, eloquent, truthful |
| 8th | Sl. 116 | "Devoid of acts", long-lived, intent on blaming others |
| 9th | Sl. 117 | A king if of royal birth, otherwise equal to one |
| 10th | Sl. 118 | Skilful in all jobs, valorous, truthful, devoted to elders |
| 11th | Sl. 119 | Wealth, happiness and children; always delighted |
| 12th | Sl. 120 | Spends through royal abodes, fears opponents, worries despite skill |
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Moon's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 10th is an angle, so dignity alone decides. The favourable line follows the Bhrigu Sutras closely: "real achievement, virtue and public recognition in career".
Outside Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio the Moon's dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58: the Sun and Mercury natural friends, every other lord neutral, and the temporary half from the chart (the lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Moon is a temporary friend). In the code read for this page dignityOf() is given the chart, so:
- Always favourable: Leo rising (Moon exalted) and Libra rising (Moon in Cancer).
- Never favourable: Aquarius rising (Moon debilitated).
- For the other nine: favourable when the 10th lord, the lord of the Moon's sign, sits in a temporary-friend position from the Moon; otherwise Neutral (Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius rising) or Enemy sign (the other six).
dashaQuality() is stricter: good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign; challenging for debilitated, enemy sign or a dusthana; neutral otherwise. The Moon Mahadasha page sets that out.
The aspect on the 4th, and lunar yogas
From the 10th the Moon aspects the 4th; aspectedHouses('moon', 10) returns [4]. That is the house where the Moon is strongest by direction, the mirror of where it sits. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator uses it to explain the academic line, and no text gives it a separate verse. See the 4th house.
For the lunar yogas, the 2nd and 12th from a Moon in the 10th are your 11th and 9th houses; Adhi Yoga looks at benefics in your 3rd, 4th and 5th; Gaj Kesari, as coded here, at Jupiter in any angle of the chart, joined or aspected by a benefic and not debilitated, combust or in an enemy sign. BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 grades the Moon by its house from the Sun; a full Moon in the 10th is the 7th from the Sun, a kendra, which those verses read as little wealth, intelligence and skill, while the modern note on the full Moon in the 10th reads it the other way.
Timing
The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 16-22 count a Moon in a kendra, and a Moon linked with the lord of the 10th, 9th or 4th, among the conditions for a prosperous Moon dasha, with a rise in position among the results. BPHS opens its house-lord dasha chapter with the 10th lord (Ch. 48 Sl. 1): favourable in a good house and exalted, adverse if debilitated in a bad one. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.
For Libra rising the Moon is the 10th lord, and Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give that dasha "recognition from and awards by the Government"; this app's line is "career recognition and advancement, often with public or institutional backing". Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon; with the Moon in the 10th, the 10th from the Moon is your 7th.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 01:00 IST on 23 January 2008 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Libra-rising case. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Libra 12.05 deg |
| Moon | Cancer 11.38 deg (Pushya), 10th house, Own sign; also the 10th lord |
| Sun, Mercury (9th lord) | Capricorn, 4th house |
| Venus (Lagna lord), Jupiter | Sagittarius, 3rd house |
| Mars | Gemini 0.44 deg, retrograde, 9th house |
| Saturn, Ketu | Leo, 11th house |
| Moon ahead of the Sun | 183.20 deg |
| House line | Favourable: phMoon10F |
| dashaQuality for the Moon | Good |
| Alternate dasha check | Chaturashiti-sama applies: "The 10th lord, Moon, sits in the 10th house" |
This is close to the full-Moon case: the Moon is 183 degrees ahead of the Sun, and the Sun is opposite in the 4th. The engine labels the birth Krishna Paksha, so it is "waning" by paksha and in Saravali's strongest band by elongation. The Moon is in its own sign as 10th lord, so the favourable line and a "good" dasha grade follow.
Mercury, the 9th lord, is in the 4th, and the Moon and Mercury aspect each other fully across the 4th-10th axis, which meets Ch. 34's mutual-aspect clause for the Moon-Mercury pair Ch. 34 names for Libra rising; the engine lists both in its Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga. Ch. 21 Sl. 19 is not met: the 10th lord is the Moon itself, in the 10th, not in a trine from it, and the Lagna lord, Venus, is in the 3rd. For the Bhrigu Sutras' malefic clause, the Sun, a malefic, aspects the 10th from the 4th. Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon and Mars in the 12th from it form Durudhura. The Moon at 11.38 degrees is in the middle ten degrees of Cancer, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 brings its dasha results in the middle of the period; the engine's Vimshottari sequence here begins with Saturn. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own chart
- Confirm the Moon is in the tenth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Note that its directional strength is zero here, and read the other Shad Bala components.
- Check for a malefic with the Moon or aspecting the 10th: the Bhrigu Sutras' obstruction clause.
- Find the 10th lord (the lord of the Moon's sign) and the Lagna lord; test Ch. 21 Sl. 15 and 19.
- Read the house the Moon rules from the Ch. 24 table.
- For a second look at career, the Dashamsa (D10) calculator builds the division BPHS assigns to power and position.
Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.
Where people go wrong
- "No directional strength means a weak career." The verses read the Moon in the 10th as excellent; directional strength is one component of six.
- "A Moon in the 10th forms Amala Yoga." BPHS's wording could allow it; this app's rule excludes the Moon.
- "It tells you your profession." BPHS Ch. 21 names no professions.
- "A favourable line means no obstacles." The Bhrigu Sutras attach obstacles to a malefic's company, which the app does not test.
- "The 10th from my Moon in transit is my 10th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.
Questions about the Moon in the 10th
- Is the Moon in the 10th house good?
- Both Moon verses are favourable: Saravali gives success, affluence, strength and charity; the Bhrigu Sutras give attainment, pious deeds and fame, with obstacles if a malefic joins or aspects the Moon.
- Why is the Moon weak by direction in the 10th?
- BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures its Dig Bala from the 10th, so it is zero there and full in the 4th. That is a measure of strength, not of meaning.
- Which rising signs give the strongest Moon in the 10th?
- Libra rising (10th lord in its own sign; a Rajayoga in the commentator's note) and Leo rising (Moon exalted, though as 12th lord). Pisces and Scorpio rising make it a trine lord in the 10th.
- Does the Moon in the 10th form Amala Yoga?
- Not in this app, whose Amala rule excludes the Moon. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 5-6 speak of exclusively a benefic in the 10th from the Lagna or the Moon.
- What does the Moon aspect from the 10th?
- The 4th house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; no separate result is stated.
- Is the Moon's dasha good with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 47 counts a Moon in a kendra, linked with the 10th, 9th or 4th lord, among the conditions for a prosperous Moon dasha. This app grades it by dignity and house.
- Does the app look at career separately?
- Yes. The career and money feature combines the 10th lord, planets in the 10th, the lord of the D10 Ascendant and the Amatya Karaka. The Moon in the 10th is one of its inputs.
- What is Chaturashiti-sama Dasha?
- An alternative dasha that BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 35-36 consider appropriate when the 10th lord is in the 10th. For Libra rising, a Moon in the 10th meets that condition, and the alternate dashas calculator reports it.
