Of the twelve houses, the 10th is where the Sun is strongest by direction. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Sun's directional strength from the 4th house, the nadir, so it is zero there and full at the opposite point, the top of the chart. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator states the consequence in one line: the Sun is considered powerful in the 10th house because it gets directional strength there. Saravali's verse for the 10th is one of its kindest to the Sun.
That makes this the most favourable of the Sun's house placements in these texts, and it is easy to stop there. This page goes further: what the verses actually promise, the conditions under which the Bhrigu Sutras turn the same Sun into obstruction, what each rising sign changes, and how the app's engine reads it. For the planet see the Sun in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 10th house, Karma Bhava; for the opposite placement, where the Sun has no directional strength at all, the Sun in the 4th.
Sources, and the language of kings
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The texts speak of kings and royal honour; this page reads that, as the Bhrigu Sutras' translator does when he writes "liked by the king (Government)", as authority, rank and recognition from an employer, institution or government. None of it is a promise about your career.
What the texts give the Sun in the 10th
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 11
The verse (p. 101): the native "will be extremely intelligent, rich, strong and will be endowed with conveyances, relatives and sons, will succeed in his undertakings, be valorous, unconquerable and great". It has no deprivation clause. The other kind Sun verses are for the 3rd and 6th; with the 10th they are three of the four Upachaya houses, the 11th (Sl. 12) being mixed. Saravali's general rule (Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87) says malefics harm the houses they occupy except the 6th, 8th and 12th, which makes the 10th an exception to the rule rather than an example of it: a malefic in an angle, read well.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 88-95
The sutras (p. 29): distinction in education by the 18th year, fame and capability in learning. If three planets aspect the Sun, the native is liked by the government, does pious deeds, is brave and valorous with a good reputation. Then two conditions pointing in opposite directions. Exalted or in Leo: powerful and famous for his qualities and achievements, a builder of reservoirs, temples and shelters. In a malefic's sign, or aspected by or joined with a malefic: "obstructions in his professional career", and evil deeds, undesirable conduct, immorality and sin. The conduct lines are the text's statements, not forecasts; the commentator (p. 29) says he sees "no logic" in the three-planet sutra and leaves it to experience.
Saravali Ch. 33: the 10th from the Moon
Saravali has a separate chapter on the 10th, and its Sl. 2 says the 10th counted from the stronger of the Ascendant and the Moon is the Karmasthana; most of the chapter is written from the Moon. Sl. 8-13 give the Sun in the 10th from the Moon success in undertakings, great wealth and strength, kingship, patronage of others and good health. That is a different placement from a Sun in the 10th house from the Ascendant, though the two coincide when the Moon is in the Ascendant's sign. The Moon sign calculator gives the sign to count from.

What "a malefic's sign" means for the Sun
The Bhrigu Sutras' obstruction clause names a malefic's sign. Among the planets the engine treats as malefic, the Sun, Mars and Saturn own signs: Leo, Aries and Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius. Leo and Aries are the Sun's own sign and exaltation, which the same passage reads as the best case, so the clause in practice bites on Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius. The sutra does not say how Aries and Leo fall under the clause, and this page does not resolve it.
Turned into rising signs: the Sun is in Scorpio in the 10th for Aquarius rising, in Capricorn for Aries rising, and in Aquarius for Taurus rising. For those three the sutras' warning applies by sign. The malefic clause applies to any Sun in the 10th that shares its sign with, or is aspected by, Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu. BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 5 says that with malefics in both the 10th and the 11th the native "will indulge only in bad deeds and will defile his own men"; it is the text's statement, not a forecast.
Directional strength, in numbers the engine uses
The arithmetic of BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7: subtract the 4th house from the Sun's longitude, take the result from 360 if it exceeds 180, and divide by three. At the 10th the distance is 180 degrees and the result is the full 60. This app works in whole houses, falling off evenly to zero at the opposite house, where BPHS measures in degrees; that simplification is the app's own. The Shad Bala calculator shows the figure for your Sun.
The 10th is also a Kendra. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5, the positional strength called Kendradi Bal, gives a full share, half in a Panaphara and a quarter in an Apoklima; the translation names the full-share class "Kon", though the name of the strength and the other two classes point to the Kendras. Read that way, a Sun in the 10th scores at the top of two Shad Bala components at once. Directional strength is a measure of strength, not of meaning: the Moon and Venus have their least directional strength in the 10th, and the Bhrigu Sutras still read both well there (Moon Sutras 54-60, Venus Sutras 59-61), each with a malefic clause.
The house, its classes and the Sun's aspect
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 lists seven things for Karm Bhava: authority, place, profession or livelihood, honour, the father, living in foreign lands and debts. Saravali names the house Karma and Mana, honour. BPHS Ch. 21, the house's own chapter, names no professions; it judges whether work prospers, is obstructed or stops, and whether fame follows. The Sun is a natural karaka of the father (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 18-21, with Venus, the stronger of the two), and BPHS reads the father from the 9th and the 10th both.
The 10th is a Kendra and an Upachaya (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 ranks it the most significant of the angles and calls the 7th and 10th "specially for happiness"; Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 says planets in mutual angles in good dignity become Yoga Karakas, and "in Karm Bhava a Grah will be significantly so"; Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 lists a house lord placed in the 10th as a strength for its own house.
From the 10th the Sun aspects the 4th; aspectedHouses('sun', 10) returns [4]. None of the three texts gives a verse for that aspect; the Bhrigu Sutras only quote Chamatkar Chintamani (p. 30) as giving pain to the mother, "as Sun as a malefic aspects the fourth house", in the translator's gloss. The engine counts it as a malefic aspect in Shad Bala for any planet in your 4th. For the house, see the 4th house.
The father in the 10th
BPHS is not consistent about which house shows the father. Ch. 11 puts the father in the 10th and Ch. 21 Sl. 2 opens with "paternal happiness" from the 10th lord; Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 say "the 9th from Sūrya denotes father", and the 9th house chapter is largely about the father too, so Parashara consults both. With the Sun in the 10th, the father's karaka sits in one of his two houses, and the 9th from the Sun falls on your 6th house. The Sun verses of Ch. 30 and the Bhrigu Sutras say nothing about the father here, but Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 81 does: "The Sun in the 10th indicates income through father". The app's house cards keep the 10th for career, following the common modern split.
How BPHS Ch. 21 reads the house
BPHS Ch. 21 has twenty-two slokas, and almost none of them is about an occupant. The method is the point. Sl. 2: a strong 10th lord, exalted or in its own sign or Navamsa, gives "extreme paternal happiness", fame and good deeds. Sl. 3: a 10th lord "devoid of strength" gives obstructions in work. Sl. 4: the 10th lord with a benefic or in a good house gives steady gain "through royal patronage and in business". The chapter ends by saying its account is brief and that other effects should be worked out from "the relationship of the Lords of Lagn and of Karm Bhava".
So for a Sun in the 10th, BPHS's own method sends the reader to two other planets: the lord of the Sun's sign (the 10th lord) and the Lagna lord. The Sun in the house is one more input. Ch. 21 does mention the Sun once, in Sl. 11: Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars together in the 11th give "cessation of his duties". That is a four-planet combination in the house after this one, not a statement about the Sun in the 10th.
Ch. 34 adds a lordship rule that explains why BPHS pairs the Sun with another planet for Scorpio rising. Sl. 2-7: malefics owning Kendras "will not remain inauspicious". Sl. 14 narrows it: a malefic owning a Kendra becomes auspicious "only when it simultaneously Lords over a Kon and not by merely owning a Kendr". The Sun owns one sign. For Scorpio rising that sign is the 10th, an angle with no trine attached, so on its own the Sun's lordship there is neutralised rather than made auspicious; the yoga Ch. 34 names for Scorpio rising needs the Moon, the 9th lord, beside it. Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 3-6 add that results depend on the nature of the sign in the 10th, which is one more reason the rising sign matters.
Lordship by rising sign
Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Sun is in your 10th when it occupies the tenth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. This app does not use the astronomical mid-heaven degree as a cusp: the whole tenth sign is the house. The rising sign fixes the Sun's sign, dignity, and the house it rules (wherever Leo falls). BPHS Ch. 24 gives each house lord in the 10th one verse.
| Ascendant | Sun's sign | Natural dignity | Sun rules | BPHS Ch. 24, that lord in the 10th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Capricorn | Enemy (Saturn) | 5th | Sl. 58: a Raj Yog, various pleasures, great fame |
| Taurus | Aquarius | Enemy (Saturn) | 4th | Sl. 46: royal honours, pleasures, mastery over the senses |
| Gemini | Pisces | Friendly (Jupiter) | 3rd | Sl. 34: all kinds of happiness and self-made wealth; interested in nurturing wicked females |
| Cancer | Aries | Exalted | 2nd | Sl. 22: libidinous, honourable and learned, many wives and much wealth, but bereft of filial happiness |
| Leo | Taurus | Enemy (Venus) | 1st | Sl. 10: paternal happiness, royal honour, fame, self-earned wealth |
| Virgo | Gemini | Neutral (Mercury) | 12th | Sl. 142: expenditure through royal persons; moderate paternal happiness |
| Libra | Cancer | Friendly (Moon) | 11th | Sl. 130: honoured by the king, virtuous, intelligent, truthful, self-controlled |
| Scorpio | Leo | Moolatrikona 0-20 deg, then own | 10th | Sl. 118: skilful in all jobs, valorous, truthful, devoted to elders |
| Sagittarius | Virgo | Neutral (Mercury) | 9th | Sl. 106: a king or equal to one, or a minister or army chief |
| Capricorn | Libra | Debilitated | 8th | Sl. 94: devoid of paternal bliss, a talebearer, bereft of livelihood; a benefic aspect stops these maturing |
| Aquarius | Scorpio | Friendly (Mars) | 7th | Sl. 82: a disobedient wife; religious, with wealth and sons |
| Pisces | Sagittarius | Friendly (Jupiter) | 6th | Sl. 70: well known, happy in foreign countries, a gifted speaker; not respectful to the father |
The 10th lifts whatever arrives in it. Ten of twelve rows are good; only the 8th and 12th lords harm the house, and Sl. 94 lets a benefic aspect cancel the 8th lord's harm. The two trine lords give the strongest lines: a Raj Yog for the 5th lord (Aries rising) and kingship for the 9th lord (Sagittarius rising).
Where lordship and dignity disagree
- Aries rising: Sl. 58 is a Raj Yog, but the Sun is in Capricorn, an enemy sign and a malefic's sign, which is exactly the Bhrigu Sutras' obstruction clause. The same placement is the best Ch. 24 row and a warning in the sutras.
- Cancer rising: the Sun is exalted in the 10th, the Bhrigu Sutras' best case, and rules the 2nd. Ch. 34 Sl. 27-28 call the Sun a "killer" for Cancer rising, the 2nd lord's Maraka role; Sl. 22 still reads well.
- Capricorn rising: the Sun is debilitated in Libra and rules the 8th. Ch. 34 calls the Sun neutral for this Ascendant and says its 8th lordship is not evil; Sl. 94 makes the harm conditional on the absence of a benefic aspect.
- Scorpio rising: the Sun is the 10th lord in its own sign in the 10th, Sl. 118, and Ch. 34 makes it a Yoga Karaka with the Moon, the 9th lord.
Ch. 21 combinations the Sun can complete
Several Ch. 21 combinations need a particular house lord in the 10th. Where the Sun is that lord, a Sun in the 10th supplies one part of the combination; the other parts must also hold.
- Sagittarius rising, Sl. 8: the 10th lord exalted and with Jupiter while the 9th lord is in the 10th gives "honour, wealth and valour". The Sun is the 9th lord; the 10th lord is Mercury, exalted in Virgo, which is the 10th sign here, so the verse needs Mercury and Jupiter together in Virgo beside the Sun.
- Libra rising, Sl. 9-10: the 11th lord in the 10th with the 10th lord in the Lagna gives a happy life. The Sun is the 11th lord; the 10th lord is the Moon, which would need to be in Libra.
- Libra rising, Sl. 20: the 11th lord in the 10th with a strong 10th lord aspecting Jupiter, one of three fame combinations.
- Leo rising, Sl. 21: the 10th lord in the 9th, the Lagna lord in the 10th and the Moon in the 5th, another fame combination. The Sun is the Lagna lord; Venus, the 10th lord, would need to be in Aries.
Yogas through the Sun in the 10th
Several named combinations are built on the 10th. Some involve the Sun only through lordship, and two are blocked by it. All can be checked in the yogas calculator.
- Kendra-Kona yoga (BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12) and its strongest form, Dharma-Karmadhipati. Ch. 34 pairs the Sun and the Moon for Scorpio rising (10th and 9th lords) and the Sun and Mercury for Sagittarius rising (9th and 10th). A Sun in the 10th joined by the Moon (Scorpio rising) or by Mercury (Sagittarius rising) is that pair together in an angle; this app flags Dharma-Karmadhipati when the 9th and 10th lords share an angle or trine.
- Raj Yog from the 10th lord alone (Ch. 39 Sl. 21): the 10th lord in its own house or exaltation, aspecting the Lagna. For Scorpio rising the Sun is the 10th lord at home, but from the 10th it aspects the 4th, not the Lagna, so this verse cannot be met by the Sun.
- Amal Yog (Ch. 36 Sl. 5-6): exclusively a benefic in the 10th from the Lagna or the Moon. The Sun is a malefic, so a Sun in the 10th from the Lagna rules out Amala from the Lagna. This app's stricter version, from Chatterjee, also fails any benefic joined or aspected by a malefic there.
- Pancha Mahapurusha yogas are formed by Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn only; the Sun forms none.
Ch. 46 Sl. 35-36 tie an alternative dasha to the 10th: Chaturashiti-sama Dasha is appropriate where the 10th lord is in the 10th. For Scorpio rising the Sun in Leo meets that condition, and the alternate dashas calculator reports it. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh any of these.
How the app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Sun's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 10th is an angle, so dignity alone decides. The malefic-company clause of the Bhrigu Sutras is not part of the test: a Sun in a friendly sign beside Saturn in the 10th still gets the favourable line.
Outside Aries, Leo and Libra the dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58: the natural half fixed (Moon, Mars, Jupiter friends; Venus, Saturn enemies; Mercury neutral), the temporary half from your chart (the sign lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Sun is a temporary friend). Only Friend or Great Friend counts as Friendly.
- Always favourable: Cancer rising (Sun exalted) and Scorpio rising (Sun in Leo).
- Favourable if the sign lord sits in a temporary-friend position: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius and Pisces rising (Sun in Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio or Sagittarius).
- Favourable only if Mercury is in a neighbouring position: Virgo and Sagittarius rising (Sun in Gemini or Virgo).
- Never favourable: Capricorn rising (debilitated), Aries and Taurus rising (Saturn's signs), Leo rising (Venus's Taurus).
The dasha panel is stricter: dashaQuality() calls the Sun good only if exalted, Moolatrikona or in its own sign; challenging if debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a dusthana; neutral otherwise. The "good" grade coincides with the Bhrigu Sutras' best case, exalted or in Leo. The Sun Mahadasha page sets out both tests.
Timing
The Sun's Mahadasha lasts six years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15) and recurs as an Antardasha in every other period; the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11 list the Sun in a Kendra among the conditions of a strong Sun dasha, with wealth, felicity and honours from the government, and add the same honours when the Sun is associated with the 9th or 10th lord. A Sun in the 10th meets the Kendra condition by position. Sl. 12-15 give the weak Sun's period, including association with malefics, the same company the Bhrigu Sutras warn about.
BPHS opens its chapter on house-lord dashas with the 10th lord (Ch. 48 Sl. 1): favourable if placed in a good house in exaltation, adverse if debilitated in a bad one. Sl. 5-8 give the 10th lord's dasha "recognition from and awards by the Government"; this app words it "career recognition and advancement, often with public or institutional backing". For Scorpio rising the Sun's own dasha carries that theme. Sl. 14-17 add that the dashas of the Lagna and 10th lords bring a kingdom when the two have exchanged houses; for Leo rising that would need the Sun in the 10th and Venus, the 10th lord, in the Lagna.
Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon; for a natural malefic the 10th from the Moon is "a classically unremarkable transit position from your Moon". That month is a different thing from Saravali Ch. 33's natal Sun in the 10th from the Moon.
A worked chart
The figures are this app's engine output for 10:00 IST on 10 April 1990 in New Delhi, an illustration of the rules and not a reading of any person. Three hours later the same Sun is in the 9th of a Cancer Ascendant, worked on the Sun in the 9th page.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Gemini |
| Sun | Pisces 26.34 deg, 10th house, Friendly sign |
| 10th lord (Jupiter) | Gemini 10.17 deg, 1st house |
| Moon | Virgo 26.87 deg, 4th house |
| Mercury | Aries 15.25 deg, 11th house |
| Venus | Aquarius 10.23 deg, 9th house |
| Mars, Saturn, Rahu | Capricorn, 8th house |
| House line | Favourable: phSun10F |
| dashaQuality for the Sun | Neutral |
| Yogas involving these planets | Ubhayachari (Mercury, Venus around the Sun); Amala (Jupiter) |
Why favourable: Jupiter, lord of Pisces, is in Gemini, the 4th sign from the Sun, a temporary and natural friend. The Sun is in a benefic's sign with no malefic in it, so the Bhrigu Sutras' obstruction clause does not apply; it is not exalted or in Leo, so their best case does not apply either, and the dasha grade is neutral.
What the texts add. With Gemini rising the Sun rules the 3rd: Ch. 24 Sl. 34, all kinds of happiness and self-made wealth. The 10th lord, Jupiter, is in the Lagna: Ch. 24 Sl. 109, scholarly and famous, ill health in boyhood and happy later, wealth growing day by day. Mercury is in the 2nd sign from the Sun and Venus in the 12th, so the engine reports Ubhayachari, which BPHS Ch. 38 Sl. 2-3 and Saravali Ch. 14 Sl. 11 both read as the equal of a king; BPHS Sl. 4 adds that malefics forming it give contrary effects. It forms often, from Mercury and Venus alone. Amala is reported for Jupiter because Gemini is the 10th from the Moon in Virgo. The Sun's aspect falls on that Moon in the 4th. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own Sun in the 10th, step by step
- Confirm the Sun is in the tenth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Is the Sun exalted or in Leo (the Bhrigu Sutras' best case)? In Scorpio, Capricorn or Aquarius (their malefic-sign clause)? Does it share its sign with Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu?
- Find the house the Sun rules and read that row of the Ch. 24 table.
- Find the 10th lord (the lord of the Sun's sign) and compare it with the Lagna lord, as Ch. 21 Sl. 22 instructs.
- Check the Sun's Shad Bala: directional and Kendradi strength will be high; the other components decide the rest.
- For a second, independent look at career, BPHS assigns power and position to the Dashamsa, which the Dashamsa (D10) calculator builds; the career and money feature combines the 10th lord, planets in the 10th, the D10 lord and the Amatya Karaka.
Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books on the sources page.
Where people overstate it
- "The Sun in the 10th guarantees a high position." The Bhrigu Sutras attach career obstructions to a Sun in a malefic's sign, or aspected by or joined with a malefic.
- "It tells you your profession." BPHS Ch. 21 names no professions.
- "Full directional strength makes the Sun strong overall." It is one of six Shad Bala components.
- "A Sun in the 10th forms Amala Yoga." Amala needs a benefic; the Sun is a malefic and blocks it from the Lagna.
- "The 10th from my Moon in transit is my 10th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.
Questions about the Sun in the 10th
- Is the Sun in the 10th house the best house for the Sun?
- By directional strength, yes: BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives it full Dig Bala there. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 11 and the Bhrigu Sutras read it well, with the sutras adding obstruction in a malefic's sign or with a malefic.
- Which rising signs give the strongest Sun in the 10th?
- Cancer rising (Sun exalted in Aries) and Scorpio rising (Sun in its own Leo, as 10th lord). Both meet the Bhrigu Sutras' best case.
- Why does the app show the testing line for my Sun in the 10th?
- Because its dignity is Neutral, Enemy sign or Debilitated. That happens for Capricorn, Aries, Taurus and Leo rising always, and for others depending on where the sign lord sits.
- What does the Sun aspect from the 10th?
- The 4th house. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for it; the engine counts it as a malefic aspect.
- Does the Sun in the 10th form a Raja Yoga?
- Not by itself. Ch. 34 pairs it with the Moon for Scorpio rising and with Mercury for Sagittarius rising; Ch. 24 Sl. 58 calls the 5th lord in the 10th a Raj Yog for Aries rising.
- Is the Sun in the 10th from my Moon the same as in my 10th house?
- No. Saravali Ch. 33 reads the 10th from the Moon separately; the two coincide only when the Moon is in the Ascendant's sign.
- When would it show?
- Classically in the Sun's six-year Mahadasha and its sub-periods, judged by dignity (BPHS Ch. 47); a Sun in a Kendra is one of the strong-dasha conditions.
