BPHS reads the father in two places: the 9th house, and the 9th counted from the Sun (Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43). A Sun in the 9th house puts the father's significator into the father's house. One might expect the classical verses to be warm about it. They are divided. Saravali gives wealth, children, friends and devotion, but a cool relationship with father and spouse. The Bhrigu Sutras give religion but "not much fortunate", and enmity with the father, unless the Sun is exalted or in its own sign, when the placement becomes very favourable and the father long-lived.
This page sets those statements out, adds the rules Saravali gives for any malefic in the house of fortune, shows which rising signs turn the Sun into a 9th-house asset, and explains how this app's engine grades it. For the planet see the Sun in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 9th house, Dharma Bhava.
Sources, and the father
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Three other books are mentioned only as the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator quotes them. Lines about a father's lifespan are reported as the texts' statements, not forecasts. BPHS gives ages for a father's death in Ch. 20 Sl. 13-25; they are not reproduced. Nothing here is a statement about your father.
Three readings of one placement
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 10
The verse (p. 101): the native "will be endowed with wealth, children and friends, will be very interested in worshipping Gods and Brahmins, will not be well-disposed towards his father and wife and be not calm". This is milder than Saravali's Sun verses for the 4th, 5th or 7th. Most of its clauses are gifts, and the costs are relational and temperamental, not material.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 83-87
The sutras (pp. 27-28): a devotee of the Sun and other gods, religious-minded "but not much fortunate", and inimical to the father. If the Sun is exalted or in its own sign, "the results will be very favourable": wife and children, a long-lived father, great wealth, religious rites and meditation, devotion to preceptor and God. If the Sun is debilitated, in an enemy's or malefic's sign, or aspected by a malefic, the text gives "loss of father", which the translator glosses as harm to the father's longevity; if a benefic aspects or joins the Sun, the father is long-lived. These are the text's statements, not forecasts.
Where Saravali gives wealth, the Bhrigu Sutras withhold fortune, which is the 9th's own subject. Both texts agree on religion and on friction with the father. The sutras add the conditions that reverse the reading, and they are the only one of the three to make the father's side turn on dignity and aspect.
Two other voices, as the commentator quotes them
The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (p. 28) quotes Brihat Jataka as giving the Sun in the 9th children, wealth and happiness; Phaldeepika as an unhappy, short-lived father but happiness from children; and Chamatkar Chintamani as harsh (an evil person, mentally worried, performing rites unwillingly, troubled by his own brothers). He says he would "prefer to give more weight" to the sutras because they separate a strong Sun from a weak one. That is the useful lesson of the disagreement: the books that give a single verdict disagree with each other, and the book that conditions its verdict on dignity explains the disagreement.
| Source | Fortune and wealth | The father | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 10 | Wealth, children, friends; devoted to worship; not calm | Not well disposed to father (and wife) | None in the verse |
| Bhrigu Sutras 83-87 | Religious; "not much fortunate" | Inimical to the father; harm to him with a malefic link, long life with a benefic | Very favourable, with a long-lived father, if exalted or in own sign |
| Brihat Jataka (as quoted) | Children, wealth, happiness | (not given in the quotation) | (not given) |
| This app, phSun9F | Genuine fortune; Raja Yoga possible in own sign or exaltation | A long-lived father | Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly dignity |
| This app, phSun9U | Reduced fortune | A strained relationship with father | Any other dignity |
The app's favourable line reads: "genuine fortune and a long-lived father - capable of forming powerful real Raja Yoga in own sign or exaltation, one of the Sun's best placements". The own-sign/exaltation condition and the long-lived father both come from the Bhrigu Sutras' exception; the Raja Yoga clause matches their commentator, who calls the own-sign case a powerful Raja Yoga. The engine, though, prints the line for a friendly sign too, which the sutras' exception does not cover.
What the 9th house carries
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 10 lists the house's indications as fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines. Fortune, religion and pilgrimage are the core every later description keeps. Saravali gives the house a chapter of its own (Ch. 32) and calls it Bhagyasthana, opening with the instruction to analyse the house of fortune before any other, because without fortune the other good results do not arrive. The Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list (Part I Ch. II, p. 15) gives the long modern list: faith, philosophy, places of worship, charity, the father, the preceptor, teaching, grandchildren, long journeys and higher education.
The two Sun verses both give the native religion: Saravali "devoted to worship", the Bhrigu Sutras "religious". That lands on the house's own subject. BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 23-27 show how seriously the texts take the religious side of the 9th: they grade the 9th lord by how many of its divisional charts fall in good dignity, and the grades run from visiting holy places up to being "a synonym of Dharma". This app does not compute those grades.
The 9th also explains its neighbours. BPHS Ch. 34 calls the 8th lord inauspicious because the 8th is the 12th from the 9th, the loss of fortune; by the same counting the 10th is the 2nd from the 9th, one reason the two are read together so closely. A Sun in the 9th sits one house short of the 10th, the house where its directional strength peaks; the Sun in the 10th house page covers that placement. Ch. 31 Sl. 18 adds that unobstructed Argala on the Lagna, the 5th and the 9th together makes one "a king and fortunate", which the Argala calculator checks.
The father's significator in the father's house
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43: "Dharm Bhava and the 9th from Surya deal with one's father." BPHS is not fully consistent: Ch. 11 Sl. 11 also lists the father under the 10th house. With the Sun in the 9th, the two counts that Ch. 7 asks for separate cleanly. The 9th house holds the Sun itself. The 9th from the Sun is the 5th house from the Ascendant, so whatever occupies your 5th is, by this second count, in the father's house as well.
BPHS Ch. 20, the 9th-house chapter, has two verses that name the Sun in connection with the father. Sl. 8: devotion to the father if the Sun is in deep exaltation with the 9th lord in the 11th. Sl. 9: the same if the Sun is in a trine from the Lagna while the 9th lord is in the 7th, joined or aspected by Jupiter. A Sun in the 9th is in a trine, so it meets the first half of Sl. 9 by position; the 9th lord in the 7th with Jupiter is the half to check. That verse gives devotion where Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras give friction, and it does so on the strength of conditions.
The other father verses in Ch. 20 (Sl. 3-7) turn on the 9th lord's strength, Venus and Jupiter, not on the Sun. The Arudha of the 9th is the Pitru Pad (Ch. 29), which the Bhava Padas calculator shows. None of these is a timetable, and this app computes no father's longevity.
Saravali's rules for a malefic in the house of fortune
Saravali gives the 9th its own chapter (Ch. 32), and its later rules (Sl. 25-29, p. 114) are the most reusable lines in it. Three of them apply directly to a Sun in the 9th, because the Sun is a natural malefic (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11).
- Sl. 26: a debilitated planet, a combust planet or a malefic in the 9th, with no benefic aspect, leaves the person "devoid of (moral) strength, wealth and fame and be dirty". The Sun is a malefic, so this is the default reading unless a benefic aspects it.
- Sl. 27: "If the malefic in the 9th is the owner of that House, then it proves auspicious", and more so with a benefic's aspect. Ownership overrides natural malefic status. The Sun owns the 9th only for Sagittarius rising, where it sits in Leo.
- Sl. 29: a planet exalted in the 9th gives "an excellent person ... with plentifulness of wealth and gold", and with a benefic's aspect a supreme ruler of great fame. The Sun is exalted in Aries, the 9th sign for Leo rising.
Read together, these give the same two exceptions as the Bhrigu Sutras, own sign and exaltation, and add a third route: a benefic's aspect, which Sl. 26 makes the difference between loss and its absence. Saravali's opening verses add method. Sl. 2: the house of fortune is the 9th from the Ascendant or from the Moon, the stronger prevailing. Sl. 3: the house occupied by the 9th lord and the planet in the 9th both have a say. Sl. 4: a 9th occupied by its own lord makes fortune "in his own country"; occupied by other planets, "the dawn of fortune will be elsewhere". For the Sun, the own-country case is again Sagittarius rising.
Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 30-35 (pp. 114-115) then take the Sun in the 9th joined by each planet. With the Moon: a short life, eye diseases, rich and fortunate, fond of quarrels. With Mars: many miseries, quarrelsome, fierce, courageous, dear to the king, skilful. With Mercury: skilful but miserable, many enemies and diseases. With Jupiter: wealth, abundant paternal wealth, long life, courage, a worthy person. With Venus: diseases, with scents, ornaments and fine robes. With Saturn: rich, eye diseases, quarrelsome, short-lived. Jupiter is the only companion the chapter reads wholly well. These are the text's statements, not forecasts or medical advice.
Rising signs, dignity and the lordship verses
Houses here are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Sun is in your 9th when it occupies the ninth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The rising sign fixes the Sun's sign, dignity and the house it rules (wherever Leo falls). BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 9th.
| Ascendant | Sun's sign | Natural dignity | Sun rules | BPHS Ch. 24, that lord in the 9th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sagittarius | Friendly (Jupiter) | 5th | Sl. 57: a prince or equal to one, an author of treatises, famous |
| Taurus | Capricorn | Enemy (Saturn) | 4th | Sl. 45: dear to all, devoted to God, virtuous, honourable, every kind of happiness |
| Gemini | Aquarius | Enemy (Saturn) | 3rd | Sl. 33: lacks paternal bliss, makes fortune through the wife, enjoys progenic and other pleasures |
| Cancer | Pisces | Friendly (Jupiter) | 2nd | Sl. 21: wealthy, diligent, skilful, sick in childhood and happy later, visits shrines |
| Leo | Aries | Exalted | 1st | Sl. 9: fortunate, dear to people, a devotee of Vishnu, skilful, eloquent, with wife, sons and wealth |
| Virgo | Taurus | Enemy (Venus) | 12th | Sl. 141: dishonours elders, hostile even to friends, intent on his own ends |
| Libra | Gemini | Neutral (Mercury) | 11th | Sl. 129: fortunate, skilful, truthful, honoured by the king, affluent |
| Scorpio | Cancer | Friendly (Moon) | 10th | Sl. 117: a king if of royal birth, otherwise equal to one; wealth and children |
| Sagittarius | Leo | Moolatrikona 0-20 deg, then own | 9th | Sl. 105: abundant fortunes, virtues and beauty, happiness from siblings |
| Capricorn | Virgo | Neutral (Mercury) | 8th | Sl. 93: betrays his religion, a heterodox, a wicked wife, steals others' wealth |
| Aquarius | Libra | Debilitated | 7th | Sl. 81: many relationships, well disposed to the spouse, many undertakings |
| Pisces | Scorpio | Friendly (Mars) | 6th | Sl. 69: trades in wood and stones, fluctuating professional fortunes |
This is the kindest of the Ch. 24 columns for the Sun so far. Eight of the twelve rows are good, and the hard ones are the 3rd, 8th and 12th lords, plus the 6th lord's fluctuations. Gemini rising stands out: Sl. 33 says a 3rd lord in the 9th "will lack paternal bliss", which agrees with the Sun's own verses on the father.
Where the verses line up
- Sagittarius rising. The Sun is the 9th lord in its own sign in the 9th. The Bhrigu Sutras' own-sign exception applies; Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27 makes a malefic owner of the 9th auspicious; Sl. 4 puts fortune in one's own country; BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 1 calls one fortunate "if Dharm's Lord is in Dharm Bhava with strength"; Ch. 24 Sl. 105 gives abundant fortunes. BPHS Ch. 34 calls the Sun auspicious for this rising sign and able to confer a yoga with Mercury, the 10th lord.
- Leo rising. The Sun is the Lagna lord exalted in the 9th. The exaltation exception applies, Saravali Sl. 29 applies, and Ch. 24 Sl. 9 is warm. BPHS Ch. 20 ties every good fortune verse to a strong Lagna lord, and here the Lagna lord is the exalted planet in the house.
- Aquarius rising is the opposite: the Sun debilitated in Libra, a malefic in the 9th that Saravali Sl. 26 reads as loss without a benefic aspect, with a middling Ch. 24 row.
Raja Yogas through the Sun in the 9th
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 make a yoga from an angle lord and a trine lord linked by exchange, conjunction in an angle or trine, or full mutual aspect. The 9th is the stronger of the two trines (Ch. 34 ranks significance rising by house within each group), and Ch. 41 Sl. 28 calls the trines Lakshmi Sthanas. This app's yogas calculator flags Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga when the 9th and 10th lords share a house that is an angle or trine, Raja Yoga when the 5th and 9th lords share a house, and the general angle-trine yoga when any angle lord and trine lord share a house or aspect each other fully.
The Sun in the 9th is a natural ingredient for three rising signs. For Sagittarius rising it is the 9th lord at home; with Mercury (the 10th lord) beside it, the 9th and 10th lords share a trine, which is both Ch. 34's named Sun-Mercury yoga for that Ascendant and the app's Dharma-Karmadhipati. For Scorpio rising the Sun is the 10th lord in the 9th, and Ch. 34 makes it a Yoga Karaka with the Moon, the 9th lord; the Moon in Cancer beside it would give the same app yoga. For Aries rising the Sun is the 5th lord in the 9th; Jupiter, the 9th lord, joining it in Sagittarius gives the app's 5th-and-9th Raja Yoga and the Ch. 39 Sl. 33-34 pairing of the two trine lords.
Ch. 34 Sl. 15 sets a limit: a trine lord that also owns an evil house does not make a Raj Yog by mere association. The Sun owns one sign only, so that limit never applies to the Sun itself, but it can apply to the partner planet. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh a yoga once found.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Sun's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 9th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. Saravali's benefic-aspect rule, the 9th lord and Jupiter play no part in that line.
Outside Aries, Leo and Libra the dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58: the natural half fixed (Moon, Mars, Jupiter friends; Venus, Saturn enemies; Mercury neutral), the temporary half from your chart (the sign lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Sun is a temporary friend). Only Friend or Great Friend counts as Friendly.
- Always favourable: Leo rising (Sun exalted) and Sagittarius rising (Sun in Leo).
- Favourable if the sign lord sits in a temporary-friend position: Aries, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rising (Sun in Sagittarius, Pisces, Cancer or Scorpio).
- Favourable only if Mercury is in a neighbouring position: Libra and Capricorn rising (Sun in Gemini or Virgo).
- Never favourable: Aquarius rising (debilitated), Taurus and Gemini rising (Saturn's signs), Virgo rising (Venus's Taurus).
The dasha panel is stricter: dashaQuality() calls the Sun good only if exalted, Moolatrikona or in its own sign, challenging if debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a dusthana, neutral otherwise. For a Sun in the 9th, that "good" grade coincides exactly with the Bhrigu Sutras' "very favourable" exception. The Sun Mahadasha page sets both tests out.
Strength in the 9th, and the aspect on the 3rd
The 9th is the one house that is both a trine and cadent (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). As an Apoklima it gives a planet a quarter of Kendradi Bal (Ch. 27 Sl. 5). Directional strength, by the arithmetic of Ch. 27 Sl. 7 set out on the Sun in the 4th house page, is measured for the Sun from the 4th house, and the 9th is five signs past that zero point, close to the peak at the 10th. The Shad Bala calculator gives both with real degrees.
From the 9th the Sun's only aspect falls on the 3rd house; aspectedHouses('sun', 9) returns [3]. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 5 reads strong planets aspecting the 9th from the 3rd, 5th or Ascendant as great luck, which is the reverse direction. None of the three texts gives a verse for the Sun aspecting the 3rd from the 9th, so this page states none; the engine counts it as a malefic aspect in Shad Bala. For the house it falls on, see the 3rd house; for the Sun there, the Sun in the 3rd.
Jupiter, the 9th lord and the Lagna lord
BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 makes Jupiter the fixed significator of the 9th, so the reading has three legs: the house, its lord and Jupiter, with the Sun added for the father. Ch. 20 ends by saying its effects "may be estimated with the help of the state of the Lords of Lagn and Dharm Bhava". With the Sun in the 9th, the 9th lord is the lord of the Sun's sign, so the planet that decides the Sun's dignity is also the one Ch. 20 asks about.
Ch. 24 Sl. 97-108 read the 9th lord through the houses: nine good rows, with the 6th, 8th and 12th the weak ones. The strongest is the 10th, "a king, or equal to him, or ... a minister, or an Army chief" (Sl. 106). Sl. 108, the 12th, adds poverty "on account of entertaining guests". See Jupiter in the 9th house for the karaka in this house. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 6-7, on Jupiter in the 9th aspected by each planet, gives the case of the Sun aspecting it as "equal to a king"; that verse is about the Sun in the 3rd, not the 9th. Sl. 30-35 above cover the Sun and Jupiter together in the 9th.
Timing
The Sun's Mahadasha lasts six years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15) and recurs as an Antardasha in every other period; the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates. Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11 list the Sun associated with the lord of Dharm among the conditions of a strong Sun dasha. A Sun in the 9th sits in the 9th lord's sign; it is associated with that lord in the verse's sense if the lord shares the sign, or if the Sun is the lord (Sagittarius rising).
For Sagittarius rising, the Sun's dasha is also the 9th lord's, and BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give that "improvement in the educational sphere, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains of wealth"; this app words it "growth in education, spirituality and unexpected gains". Ch. 48 adds that a planet in a trine at the start of its dasha gives favourable results, and Ch. 41 Sl. 16 that planets joined with the 9th or 5th lord give wealth in their periods. BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 10, 27 and 28 give ages for fortune under specific combinations; none involves the Sun, and this app uses none.
Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon; for a natural malefic the 9th from the Moon is "a classically unremarkable transit position", and the Sun stays there about a month. That is unrelated to a natal Sun in the 9th house.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 13:00 IST on 10 April 1990 in New Delhi, an illustration of the rules and not a reading of any person. Two hours later the same Sun is in the 8th of a Leo Ascendant, worked on the Sun in the 8th page.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Cancer |
| Sun | Pisces 26.46 deg, 9th house, Friendly sign |
| 9th lord (Jupiter) | Gemini 10.19 deg, 12th house |
| Moon | Virgo 28.37 deg, 3rd house |
| Mercury | Aries 15.41 deg, 10th house |
| Venus | Aquarius 10.36 deg, 8th house |
| Mars, Saturn, Rahu | Capricorn, 7th house |
| House line | Favourable: phSun9F |
| dashaQuality for the Sun | Neutral |
Why favourable: Jupiter, lord of Pisces, is in Gemini, the 4th sign from the Sun, a temporary friend and a natural friend, so Great Friend. Why the dasha grade is only neutral: a friendly sign is not exalted, Moolatrikona or own, which is also why the Bhrigu Sutras' "very favourable" exception is not met.
What the texts add. With Cancer rising the Sun rules the 2nd, so Ch. 24 Sl. 21 applies: wealthy, diligent, skilful, sick in childhood and happy later. The 9th lord, Jupiter, is in the 12th: Ch. 24 Sl. 108 reads loss of fortunes and spending on auspicious acts. For Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26, the question is a benefic aspect on the Sun, and the Moon in Virgo aspects Pisces. The engine counts the Moon as a benefic; BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts a waning Moon among the malefics, and in this chart the Moon is about 182 degrees ahead of the Sun, just past full. The Sun's own aspect lands on that same Moon in the 3rd. The 9th from the Sun is Scorpio, the 5th house, which is empty. The page lists what the texts name and does not net it.
Checking it in your own chart
- Confirm the Sun is in the ninth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Is the Sun exalted (Aries) or in Leo? That is the Bhrigu Sutras' exception and Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27 and 29.
- Does a benefic aspect the Sun? Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26 turns on it.
- Find the house the Sun rules and read that row of the Ch. 24 table.
- Find the 9th lord (the lord of the Sun's sign) and its house; check the Lagna lord too (Ch. 20).
- For the father, read the 9th from the Sun, which is your 5th house, and Ch. 20 Sl. 9.
- Repeat the count from the Moon, as Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 2 allows; the Moon sign calculator gives the sign.
Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books on the sources page.
Over-readings
- "The Sun in the 9th means a bad relationship with the father." Two verses say so; BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 9 gives devotion when its conditions hold, and the Bhrigu Sutras reverse their reading for an exalted or own-sign Sun.
- "The house of fortune makes any planet lucky." Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26 reads an unaspected malefic there as loss.
- "A malefic in the 9th ruins fortune." Sl. 27 says a malefic that owns the 9th proves auspicious.
- "The app says favourable, so Raja Yoga is formed." The line says capable of forming; the yoga needs a second lord.
- "The father verses give dates." Ch. 20's ages need several placements at once; this app computes none.
Questions about the Sun in the 9th
- Is the Sun in the 9th house good?
- It depends on dignity. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 10 gives wealth, children and devotion with a cool relationship to the father; the Bhrigu Sutras give "not much fortunate" unless the Sun is exalted or in its own sign, when it is very favourable.
- What does it say about my father?
- Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras give friction, the sutras adding harm to the father under malefic influence and a long-lived father with benefic influence or an exalted or own-sign Sun; BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 9 gives devotion under conditions. BPHS reads the father from the 9th and from the 9th from the Sun, which here is your 5th house. Nothing here is a statement about your father.
- Which rising signs give the best Sun in the 9th?
- Sagittarius rising (the Sun as 9th lord in Leo) and Leo rising (the Lagna lord exalted in Aries). Both meet the Bhrigu Sutras' exception and Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27 or 29.
- Can the Sun in the 9th form a Raja Yoga?
- With a partner lord: for Sagittarius rising with Mercury, for Scorpio rising with the Moon, for Aries rising with Jupiter. The app flags these as Dharma-Karmadhipati or Raja Yoga when the lords share a house.
- What does the Sun aspect from the 9th?
- The 3rd house. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for it; the engine counts it as a malefic aspect.
- Why is my dasha quality neutral when the house line is favourable?
- The house line accepts a friendly sign; the dasha grade calls the Sun good only if exalted, Moolatrikona or in its own sign.
- Does the Sun in the 9th mean fortune away from home?
- Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4 says a 9th occupied or aspected by its own lord makes fortune "in his own country", and other planets there put "the dawn of fortune" elsewhere. The Sun is the 9th's own lord only for Sagittarius rising; for the other eleven rising signs it is one of the "other planets".
- Does it make a person religious?
- Both Sun verses say so: Saravali "devoted to worship", the Bhrigu Sutras "religious". BPHS ties religion to the 9th and its lord throughout. These are classical classifications, not a statement about anyone's beliefs.
- Is a Sun transiting the 9th from my Moon the same?
- No. It is a month-long transit counted from the Moon, read as unremarkable for a malefic. The natal placement is counted from the Ascendant.
