Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Jupiter in the 9th house: Saravali's minister and its aspect-by-aspect reading, the Bhrigu Sutras' pious protector, BPHS Ch. 20 verses that name Jupiter in the 9th, Jupiter's aspects on the Lagna and the 5th, Jupiter as a lord in the 9th for each rising sign, the yogas it can join, and how this app grades it.

Jupiter in the 9th house is the placement the classical sources spend the most words on. BPHS makes Jupiter the fixed significator of the 9th, so here the karaka sits in its own house. Saravali, which gives the 9th a chapter of its own, gives most of that chapter to this one placement, reading it planet by planet according to which graha aspects it. The Bhrigu Sutras read it as pious, wealthy and protective of many, with a long-lived father, and their commentator calls the own-sign case "a powerful Rajayoga". BPHS Ch. 20, the chapter that judges the 9th, names Jupiter in the 9th in two of its fortune verses.

This page sets out those statements and their conditions, the three houses Jupiter aspects from here, what Jupiter rules from each rising sign and what Parashara says about those lords in the 9th, the yogas it can join, timing, and one engine-computed chart. For the planet in general see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 9th house, Dharma Bhava.

Sources, and the father

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The 9th is the father's house, and the texts speak of his fortune and length of life. This page reports those lines as what the texts say. This app makes no forecast about anyone's parent, and the verses on the father's death are left out.

The karaka in its own house

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 10 assigns Dharma Bhava fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines; Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 add the father. Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 list the Bhava Karakas in house order, and Guru holds four of them: the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th. So a 9th-house reading has three legs: the house, its lord, and Jupiter (BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 32 closes by sending the reader to the lords of the Lagna and the 9th). With Jupiter in the 9th, two of the three legs stand in the same place, and for Aries and Cancer rising, where Jupiter also owns the 9th, all three do.

The house is a Kona and an Apoklima at once (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). Its trine status is what the texts lean on: Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 rank the 9th above the 5th among the trines, and Ch. 41 Sl. 28 calls the trines Lakshmi Sthanas. It is not a Dusthana, so Saravali's general rule against benefics in the 6th, 8th and 12th, which shaped the Jupiter pages for those houses, does not apply here.

Jupiter's significations and the 9th's overlap closely. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 and Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 give the planet knowledge, happiness, learning, children and wealth, and the Bhrigu Sutras' modern list for the house (p. 15) gives faith, wisdom and worship, the preceptor, teaching, philosophy and higher education. Saravali's reading of Jupiter in Sagittarius, the natural 9th sign, is "a preceptor who conducts vows and initiations", which is the same overlap stated as a sign reading.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 58

The verse in full: the native will be attached to divine and paternal duties, be learned, fortunate, be a king's minister, or a leader and be chief. No condition is stated. Two of its words, divine and paternal duties, are the 9th's religion and father; the other three, learned, fortunate and a minister, are Jupiter's wisdom, the 9th's fortune and the standing Saravali Ch. 32 goes on to grade.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 44-45

The sutras (p. 82): religious and charitable deeds, an interest in meditation, pious and wealthy; religious ceremonies in the 35th year; a long-lived father; righteous, respected and honoured; giving protection to many. The commentator (pp. 82-83) adds that in its own sign, as 9th lord in the 9th, Jupiter gives "a powerful Rajayoga", and exalted in Cancer for Scorpio rising, as lord of the 2nd and 5th, "an extremely powerful yoga for prosperity and fame". Other Views (p. 83): Brihat Jatak, devout and philosophical; Phaldeepika, wealthy, with children, famous, eager for religious rites, a minister; Chamatkar Chintamani, a palatial house, the king's favourite, loved by his relations. The Note: all agree Jupiter is very favourable here. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. The engine's two strings were written from the same sutras. The favourable one reads "exceptional fortune, faith and a long-lived father - classically one of Jupiter's best placements, forming real Raja Yoga in its own sign or exaltation". The other reads "reduced fortune under real affliction". The word "real" in the second string is the engine's; it marks that the writer expected the testing line here to be rare in practice.

Saravali Ch. 32: one placement, many aspects

Most of Saravali's chapter on the house of fortune, Sl. 6-24, is about Jupiter in the 9th and how each aspecting planet colours it. The single-aspect readings (Sl. 6-7) are a ladder of kinds of wealth and rank.

Jupiter in the 9thSaravali Ch. 32 Sl. 6-7 and 19
Alone, no aspect"A minister"
Aspected by the Sun"Equal to a king"
Aspected by the MoonSplendourous, enjoying pleasures
Aspected by MarsGold
Aspected by MercuryAffluence
Aspected by VenusQuadrupeds, conveyances and wealth
Aspected by SaturnImmovable property, asses and buffaloes
Aspected by both Mars and SaturnBase, a talebearer, spiteful, living abroad
Sl. 23 limits the list: these readings hold only when no other planets (than those mentioned) aspect. Sl. 8-22 give fifteen two-planet aspects; one of them is shown.

Two things follow from the way the ladder is built. First, the readings are about aspect, not conjunction: a planet sitting with Jupiter in the 9th is not one of the cases. Second, Sl. 23 makes each reading exclusive, so a chart with two aspecting planets falls outside the single-aspect list and into Sl. 8-22, which give a reading for each of fifteen pairs. Most read well (the Sun with Mars, sovereignty and gold; Mars with Mercury, highly learned and virtuous). Mars with Saturn is the harshest, base and spiteful, living abroad; the Moon with Saturn gives a liar, argumentative, living abroad and not virtuous; the Moon with Venus and Mars with Venus mix wealth with lines on conduct this page names and does not repeat. Sl. 23 adds that Jupiter in the 9th aspected by the 9th lord makes one a king.

Which planets can aspect a Jupiter in the 9th in a whole-sign chart? Every planet aspects the 7th from itself, so any planet in the 3rd. Mars adds the 4th and 8th from itself, so Mars in the 6th or 2nd. Saturn adds the 3rd and 10th, so Saturn in the 7th or 12th. The Sun, Mercury and Venus have only the 7th aspect, so the "equal to a king" line needs the Sun in the 3rd, with no other planet aspecting Jupiter. The Moon can aspect only from the 3rd as well.

The birth chart calculator shows every planet's house, which is enough to find which of these aspects your Jupiter receives. Rahu and Ketu are not in Saravali's list, though the engine counts Rahu's aspect in its strength reason.

The chapter's general rules then close the section. Sl. 25 gives a strong benefic in the 9th a kingdom, movable property, wealth, grains, righteousness and increased longevity. Sl. 26 strips strength, wealth and fame from a debilitated or combust occupant without benefic aspect, which for Jupiter means Capricorn, the 9th sign for Taurus rising, or a Jupiter within the engine's 11-degree combustion orb of the Sun. Sl. 29 reads an exalted planet in the 9th as an excellent person with wealth, which for Jupiter is Cancer, the 9th sign for Scorpio rising.

BPHS Ch. 20: the verses that name Jupiter

The chapter that judges the 9th mentions Jupiter more than any other planet. Two of the verses need Jupiter in the 9th itself.

  • Sl. 2: Jupiter in the 9th, the 9th lord in an angle and a strong Lagna lord make one "extremely fortunate".
  • Sl. 27: Jupiter in the 9th and the 9th lord in an angle from the Lagna give abundant fortunes "after the 20th year".
  • Sl. 3: a fortunate father if the 9th lord is strong, Venus is in the 9th, and Jupiter is in an angle. This one puts Jupiter elsewhere.
  • Sl. 5: a long-lived father if, among other conditions, Jupiter is in the 9th counted from the Navamsa Lagna. That is a different chart, which the Navamsa calculator shows.
  • Sl. 6: a father of royal standing if the 9th lord is in an angle and receives Jupiter's aspect.

Sl. 2 and Sl. 27 share a structure that rules out two rising signs. Both need Jupiter in the 9th and the 9th lord in an angle. For Aries and Cancer rising Jupiter is the 9th lord, so with Jupiter in the 9th the lord is in a trine, not an angle, and neither verse can be met. For the other ten Lagnas they need a second planet: Saturn in an angle for Taurus or Gemini rising, Venus for Virgo or Aquarius, Mars for Leo or Pisces, the Moon for Scorpio, the Sun for Sagittarius, Mercury for Libra or Capricorn.

Sl. 6 connects to Jupiter's aspects from the 9th. Jupiter there aspects the 1st, an angle. So a 9th lord in the Lagna with Jupiter in the 9th meets Sl. 6 directly: the 9th lord in an angle, receiving Jupiter's aspect. Ch. 24 Sl. 97 reads the 9th lord in the 1st as fortunate, honoured by the king and the public, virtuous, charming and learned. Sl. 27's age is the text's, and this app uses none of these ages. The Navamsa (D9) calculator gives the chart Sl. 5 asks about.

Aspects from the 9th: the Lagna, the 3rd and the 5th

BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give Jupiter full special aspects on the 5th and 9th from itself besides the 7th that every graha has. From the 9th, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 9) returns [3, 1, 5]: the 7th from the 9th is the 3rd, the 5th from it is the Lagna, and the 9th from it is the 5th. So a Jupiter in the 9th aspects all three trines when its own house is counted: it sits in one and aspects the other two.

That is the geometry behind Ch. 31 Sl. 18, in a different system: unobstructed Argala on the Lagna, the 5th and the 9th makes one "a king and fortunate". It is also why a 9th-house Jupiter touches the self, children and fortune at once. The 1st house and 5th house pages cover what each of those houses signifies; the 3rd, of siblings and effort, receives the 7th aspect.

The Lagna aspect matters for one yoga in particular. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4 define Gaja Kesari with Jupiter in an angle from the Lagna or the Moon; Jupiter in the 9th is not in an angle from the Lagna, so by BPHS it qualifies only through the Moon, which must then be in the 3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th. The engine applies the same rule, and then also needs Venus, Mercury or the Moon joining Jupiter or in the 3rd to aspect it.

What Jupiter owns: the twelve rising signs

Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, so two of BPHS Ch. 24's verses for a lord placed in the 9th apply to each Jupiter in the 9th. The table puts them beside the engine's natural dignity.

Natural dignity is dignityOf() with no chart; lordship from the standard sign rulers; Ch. 24 condensed from bphs.txt (Sl. 21 sick in childhood; Sl. 33 lacking paternal bliss; Sl. 93 a heterodox with a wicked wife; Sl. 141 inimical even to friends, not shown).

The four Lagnas BPHS Ch. 34 calls Jupiter auspicious for, Aries, Cancer, Leo and Scorpio, are the four where it owns a trine, and three of them put Jupiter in strong dignity in the 9th: own sign for Aries and Cancer, exaltation for Scorpio. Pisces rising, where Ch. 34 says Jupiter "confers a Yoga, with Mars", carries the Lagna and 10th lords into the 9th. Sagittarius rising, where Ch. 34 calls it neutral, carries the Lagna lord. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

The hard rows are Taurus and Capricorn. For Taurus rising Jupiter is debilitated in the 9th and carries the 8th lordship, so Sl. 93 applies and Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26 applies unless a benefic aspects it; Sl. 129, for its 11th lordship, reads the other way. For Capricorn rising Jupiter is in an enemy sign and carries the 12th and 3rd, the two Ch. 24 verses that give the 9th the least. The Bhrigu Sutras commentator, under Jupiter in the 7th (p. 81), quotes Uttara Kalamrita that Jupiter owning the 3rd and 12th "will be productive of good", against Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40's malefic verdict for Capricorn.

Ch. 34 Sl. 15 adds that a trine lord that also owns an evil house does not make a Raja Yoga by mere association. That qualifies Jupiter as 9th lord for both of its 9th-lord Lagnas: with the 12th for Aries, with the 6th for Cancer. Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22 make it auspicious for Aries, but "if Guru is at the disposal of a malefic, he will surely give inauspicious results".

Dignity in a chart, and by sign

The table's dignity column is the natural relation only. The engine calls dignityOf with the chart, so the temporary relation can change it. Run for every Lagna: own sign (Aries, Cancer), exalted (Scorpio) and debilitated (Taurus) never change. Gemini's natural neutral becomes Friendly sign when Saturn, the lord of Aquarius, is in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th house, and Enemy sign otherwise. The friendly signs (Leo, Sagittarius, Pisces rising) drop to Neutral with their dispositor in the 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th; the enemy signs (Virgo, Libra, Capricorn, Aquarius) rise to Neutral with it in the others.

Saravali Ch. 27, Jupiter by sign, reads without reference to house. The 9th signs that read best are Sagittarius (Aries rising), a preceptor, charitable, a minister, fond of solitude and shrines; Pisces (Cancer rising), knows the meaning of the Vedas, a headman in the king's service; Cancer (Scorpio rising), a scholar, charitable, famous, truthful. The hardest are Capricorn (Taurus rising), grief and want, life in other countries, and Aquarius (Gemini rising), a tale-bearer, miserly, losing wealth through his own words. Saravali Ch. 27 is generous to Jupiter in Taurus, Gemini, Virgo and Libra, the signs of its natural enemies, which are the 9th for Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius rising.

Yogas Jupiter can join from the 9th

The engine flags Raja Yoga when the 5th and 9th lords occupy one house, and Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga when the 9th and 10th lords occupy one house that is an angle or trine. The yogas calculator lists both. For Jupiter in the 9th the cases are these.

AscendantJupiter isThe partner it needs in the 9thYoga the engine names

Gemini10th lordSaturn (9th lord) in AquariusDharma-Karmadhipati
Pisces10th lordMars (9th lord) in ScorpioDharma-Karmadhipati
Lordship from the standard sign rulers. Yoga names as in the engine's detectYogas.

Several rows double up with other rules. Pisces rising is Ch. 34's "confers a Yoga, with Mars", and here both are in Scorpio, Mars's own sign. Scorpio rising puts an exalted Jupiter with the Moon in its own sign, which is also the engine's Gaj Kesari, since the Moon both stands in the 1st from Jupiter and joins it. Cancer rising is the one Lagna where a single partner gives both yogas, because Mars rules the 5th and 10th for Cancer. In the Gemini and Pisces rows the partner, Saturn or Mars, is in its own sign too.

BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 39 names one combination that fits this placement by name: Jupiter in its own sign in the 9th with Venus or the 5th lord, giving royal status. Jupiter is in its own sign in the 9th only for Aries and Cancer rising, so the verse means the Sun or Venus with Jupiter in Sagittarius for Aries, and Mars or Venus with Jupiter in Pisces for Cancer. Venus in Pisces is also exalted. The app does not test the Ch. 39 list.

Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that planets joined with the 9th or 5th lord "are capable of bestowing wealth" in their dasha periods. The engine's Gaja Kesari follows BPHS, which asks besides the angle that Jupiter be joined or aspected by a benefic and not debilitated, combust or in an enemy's sign. How to weigh any of these is in what a yoga in your chart means.

Company in the 9th

Saravali Ch. 15's Jupiter pairs read each companion: with the Sun, virtuous, a king's minister, a preceptor; with the Moon, firm in friendship, wealthy, virtuous; with Mars, intelligent, expert in speech and in the Vedas; with Mercury, a scholar, wise and happy; with Venus, lives by learning and argument, follows a virtuous path; with Saturn, heroic, wealthy, head of a town or an assembly. Set in the 9th these are conjunctions, which Saravali Ch. 32's aspect ladder does not cover.

The Sun pair needs a note. Within 11 degrees the engine marks Jupiter combust, and Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26 then reads the occupant without strength, wealth and fame unless a benefic aspects it. And the Sun in the 9th is the Bhrigu Sutras' "not much fortunate" placement for the father. The same pair that Ch. 15 reads as a preceptor is therefore read three ways, and the page does not net them. Mercury in the 9th has its own page: Mercury in the 9th house.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading's planet row is favourable when Jupiter is exalted, in its Moolatrikona, in its own sign or in a friendly sign, and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 9th is never a Dusthana, so dignity decides it. For Aries, Cancer and Scorpio rising the row is always favourable; for Taurus rising always "reduced fortune under real affliction"; for the rest it turns on the temporary relation. The Moolatrikona label applies for Aries rising when Jupiter is in the first 10 degrees of Sagittarius.

Four of the twelve Lagnas, Virgo, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius, put Jupiter in a natural enemy's sign in the 9th, and those charts get the testing line unless the temporary relation lifts it to Neutral, which still reads testing. So the row is testing for those four Lagnas in every chart, though Saravali Ch. 27 reads Jupiter in Taurus, Gemini, Virgo and Libra generously and Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 58 states no condition. The grade follows the engine's rule and is consistent with it.

dashaQuality() rates the Jupiter dasha good when Jupiter is exalted, in Moolatrikona or in its own sign, challenging when it is debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a Dusthana, and neutral otherwise. In this engine directional strength is full in the 1st, where BPHS puts Jupiter's, and from the 9th Jupiter scores 1.33 of 4. BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 53-55 count the 9th place from a contributor as good for Jupiter from five of eight: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and the Lagna. The Shad Bala calculator and Ashtakavarga calculator show both for your chart.

Timing

Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 (see also the Jupiter Mahadasha page) give the strong case: Guru in exaltation, its own sign, its Moolatrikona, in the 10th, 5th or 9th house, or in its own or exalted Navamsa. The text lists acquisition of a kingdom, great felicity, recognition by government, conveyances, devotion, happiness from spouse and children, and success in religious observances. As with Mercury, the 9th is enough by itself for this verse; dignity is an alternative.

Sl. 49-51 give the weak case: debilitation, combustion, malefic company, or the 6th or 8th house. A Jupiter in the 9th can meet the first three. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give the 9th lord's dasha "improvement in the educational sphere, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains of wealth", carried in the engine as "growth in education, spirituality and unexpected gains". For Aries and Cancer rising the Jupiter dasha is that 9th lord's period, and the Jupiter Mahadasha page's table pairs it with the 12th-lord line for Aries and the 6th-lord line for Cancer.

Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord favourable when associated with a trine lord. Jupiter is both for Aries and Cancer rising, and for Leo it owns the 5th with the 8th. BPHS Ch. 56 reads several sub-periods by the sub-lord's house counted "from the Lord of the Dasha", that is from Jupiter. From a Jupiter in the 9th house, planets in the 2nd, 4th and 8th houses are 6th, 8th and 12th from it. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates, and the Gochar calculator counts transits from the natal Moon, where Jupiter crossing the 9th is classed favourable.

BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 1 is met in its simplest form: the 9th lord in the 9th, in its own sign. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4 reads the house occupied by its lord as fortune in one's own country, though Mars occupies it too. Mars is the Lagna lord, and Ch. 24 Sl. 9 reads the Lagna lord in the 9th as fortunate, dear to people, skilful and eloquent; Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 14 reads Jupiter with Mars as intelligent and expert in speech. Ch. 24 Sl. 141, for the 12th lordship Jupiter also carries, reads the other way. Rahu in the 3rd aspects the 9th, so Saravali Ch. 32's aspect ladder does not apply cleanly: no graha in its list aspects Jupiter, and Rahu is not in the list.

Ch. 20 Sl. 2 and Sl. 27 cannot be met, since Jupiter is the 9th lord and is not in an angle. The engine does not flag the 5th-9th Raja Yoga because the Sun, the 5th lord, is in the 10th, nor Dharma-Karmadhipati because Saturn, the 10th lord, is in the 10th, though the Kendra-Kona entry picks up the angle and trine lords together. The Moon in the 6th puts Jupiter 4th from it, but no benefic joins Jupiter or aspects it from the 3rd, and Mars beside it is a malefic, so the engine's Gaj Kesari does not form. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Jupiter is in the ninth sign from your Ascendant, and check its distance from the Sun.
  2. Find what Jupiter rules from your Lagna and read the two Ch. 24 slokas in the table above.
  3. List which planets aspect it; Saravali Ch. 32 reads one aspect at a time and only when it is the only one.
  4. Find the 9th lord: in an angle, it opens Ch. 20 Sl. 2 and 27; in the Lagna, it receives Jupiter's aspect for Sl. 6.
  5. Check the yoga table for your Lagna's partner.
  6. Read the app's planet row knowing it follows dignity, while Ch. 47 names the 9th by itself.

Method and limits are on the methodology page. The neighbouring placements are Jupiter in the 8th and Jupiter in the 10th.

Over-readings

  • "Jupiter in the 9th guarantees fortune." The verses read it well; Saravali's own general rule withdraws it for a debilitated or combust Jupiter without benefic aspect, and Ch. 24 adds the other house it rules.
  • "Jupiter in the 9th means a long-lived father." That is the sutras' line, reported as theirs. This app makes no statement about anyone's parent.
  • "Fortune after 20." Ch. 20 Sl. 27 also needs the 9th lord in an angle, impossible for Aries and Cancer rising; the age is the text's.
  • "Any aspect on it makes a king." Only the Sun's single aspect and the 9th lord's aspect give that line, and Sl. 23 voids the single-aspect list when other planets also aspect.
  • "The karaka in its own house is always strong." The engine grades it testing for four rising signs, and Taurus rising puts it in its fall.

Questions about Jupiter in the 9th

Is Jupiter good in the 9th house?
Every source in the corpus reads it well: Saravali gives a learned, fortunate minister or leader; the Bhrigu Sutras piety, wealth, a long-lived father and the protection of many, and the commentator a Rajayoga in own sign.
What does Jupiter aspect from the 9th?
