Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Jupiter in the 8th house: the open disagreement between Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, the own-sign and exaltation exception, the commentator's Vipareeta note, Jupiter's aspect on the 2nd it signifies, BPHS Ch. 47 on Jupiter's dasha from the 8th, and how this app grades it.

Jupiter in the 8th house is one of the houses where the sources split, and here the split is about the house's own subject. The Bhrigu Sutras call the native short-lived and drawn to undesirable activity; Saravali calls him long-lived, though insulted, in service and pitiable. The sutras then make an exception for Jupiter in its own sign or exaltation, long-lived, healthy, learned and saintly, and their commentator, noting that Phaldeepika and Saravali say long life, feels an unafflicted Jupiter "should certainly help to enhance the longevity".

This page sets out those readings, the BPHS rules on the 8th that name or bear on Jupiter, what Jupiter owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 8th house, Randhra Bhava.

Sources, and longevity

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The texts' disagreement here is about length of life. This page reports it as a disagreement between texts; this app computes no lifespan, and nothing here is a statement about anyone's life or health.

The great benefic in the house of longevity

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 gives Randhra Bhava longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and things past and to come. Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 make the 3rd and 8th the two houses of longevity. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator calls the 8th "the worst Dusthana" (under Mars, p. 57) and, under the Moon (p. 40), the 12th from the 9th, the house of fortune. The house is also a Panaphara, so a planet here gets half of Kendradi Bal against a quarter in the 6th and 12th (BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5).

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 say benefics prove adverse in the 6th, 8th and 12th, and Saravali Ch. 30 is kind to Jupiter only in the eight houses outside the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Saturn, not Jupiter, the significator of the 8th, and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator quotes Bhavartha Ratnakar that "Saturn in the 8th house gives long life" (p. 105).

The commentator's reason for calling the 8th the worst Dusthana has a particular edge for Jupiter. The 8th is the 12th, the house of loss, counted from the 9th, and BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Jupiter the karaka of the 9th as well as of the 2nd, 5th and 11th. A Jupiter in the 8th therefore sits in the 12th from one of its own houses. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 also read children from the 5th house counted from Jupiter, which from the 8th is the 12th house. The texts draw no conclusion from either count, and this page draws none.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 57

The verse in full: the native will be insulted, long-lived, be a servant, will serve his own people, be pitiable and will have union with dirty women. No condition is stated. It is one of Saravali's four harsh Jupiter verses, with the 3rd, 6th and 12th, yet it gives the house's own subject, long life, in the affirmative.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 38-43

The sutras (p. 81): short-lived and drawn to undesirable activities; sinful with a malefic. If the 8th lord is with a benefic and in the 8th, long-lived; if the 8th lord is weak, short-lived; if it is with a malefic, a line about relations with widows after the 17th year, named here and not repeated. In its own sign or exaltation: long-lived, free from diseases, saintly, learned and versed in the Vedas and Shastras. The life-span words are the text's, not a forecast. The engine's lines were written from the same chapter: favourable, "genuine longevity and spiritual depth when in its own sign or exaltation - a real exception among Jupiter's more difficult placements"; testing, "reduced longevity and integrity strain otherwise". The engine's provenance note records that a line in the sutras for this house about relations outside marriage was dropped.

The commentator's addition

The commentator (pp. 81-82) says only own sign or exaltation makes Jupiter good here. He expected Jupiter, a benefic and Dhana-Karaka, to give wealth by aspecting the 2nd, notes that "the author of the above Sutras does not seem to think so", and holds it should happen when the 2nd falls in Sagittarius or Pisces. He adds that Jupiter in the 8th "as a lord of auspicious houses" damages them. Under Jupiter in the 12th (p. 86) he quotes Uttara Kalamrita that a lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th in another of those houses forms a Vipareeta Raja yoga, which this engine detects separately. Both rules apply to Jupiter here, by lordship.

Other Views (p. 82). Brihat Jatak: base. Phaldeepika: poor, earning by serving others, long-lived but sinful. Chamatkar Chintamani: not living long in his paternal house, in poor health, with a line on the afterlife the page does not repeat. The Note: "While Bhrigu Sutras is of the view that Jupiter in the 8th will make the native short-lived, Phaldeepika and Saravali are of the opposite view." Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

Condensed from the Bhrigu Sutras' 8th-house sutras (pp. 26, 40, 56, 69, 81, 94, 105); ages and ailments omitted.

The two natural benefics in the column are read in opposite ways. Mercury's default is good and its exception bad; Jupiter's default is bad and its exception good. Jupiter's exception is its own dignity, as the Sun's, Moon's and Saturn's are; Mars's and Venus's are a benefic's company. Jupiter, a benefic in every company, is also the companion that supplies the exception for Mars and Venus when it sits beside them in the 8th.

The exception: Taurus, Leo and Sagittarius rising

Jupiter's own signs are Sagittarius and Pisces and its exaltation is Cancer. In the 8th those fall for Taurus rising (Sagittarius), Leo rising (Pisces) and Sagittarius rising (Cancer). These are the three Lagnas where the sutras' exception, long-lived, healthy, learned and saintly, applies, and where the engine's unused favourable line was written for.

For Taurus and Leo Jupiter is also the 8th lord, in its own sign in its own house. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 92 reads the 8th lord in the 8th as long-lived (medium if weak), the sutras' "8th lord with a benefic in the 8th" case too, and the engine names Sarala Yoga. BPHS Ch. 34 then separates them by Jupiter's other house: the 8th lord that also owns the 11th "will prove specifically harmful" (Taurus), and one that owns a Kona "will bestow auspicious effects" (Leo, where Jupiter also owns the 5th). So Leo rising is the row where dignity, the sutras' exception, BPHS's 8th-lord sloka and Ch. 34's trine clause all point the same way.

For Sagittarius rising Jupiter is the Lagna lord, exalted in the 8th. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 8 reads the Lagna lord in the 8th as "an accomplished scholar", but sickly, thievish, quick to anger and a gambler; even the placement Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 treat as weakest for the body is given a real gift. The sutras' "learned" in the exception and the sloka's "accomplished scholar" coincide. BPHS Ch. 19 Sl. 14-15 list among long-life combinations the Lagna lord exalted with the Moon in the 11th and Jupiter in the 8th; it is reported here as text, and the app computes no lifespan.

BPHS Ch. 42 lists penury combinations that start from the Lagna lord: in the 8th while the Lagna or the Moon is with Ketu (Sl. 4), or joined to a Trika lord with no benefic aspect (Sl. 6). For Sagittarius and Pisces rising the Lagna lord in the 8th is Jupiter. Each sloka needs a second condition; they are multi-factor rules; a Jupiter in the 8th supplies one part only.

The Vipareeta yogas: six rising signs

This app's yogas calculator names Harsha, Sarala or Vimala when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in one of those houses, reading each as a difficult house turning into an unexpected source of gain after struggle. Jupiter rules two signs, so a Jupiter in the 8th forms one for six rising signs.

The sourcing: the engine's Vipareeta reference is a modern case book without a numbered definition; BPHS gives the 12th lord in the 8th gains (Sl. 140, the best sloka of its set) and the 8th lord in the 8th long life (Sl. 92), but reads the 8th lord in the 12th as short life (Sl. 96). For this house the Vimala and Sarala cases have BPHS behind them; the Harsha cases, 6th lord in the 8th, BPHS reads as sickly and inimical (Sl. 68).

The commentator's rule about good houses lands on three of the six: Jupiter carries the 9th into the 8th for Aries and Cancer and the 5th for Leo, and Ch. 24 Sl. 104 reads the 9th lord in the 8th as not prosperous, Sl. 56 the 5th lord there as little happiness from children. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make a Trika lord's dasha favourable when associated with a trine lord, and for these Lagnas Jupiter is both.

The aspect on the 2nd, the house Jupiter signifies

From the 8th, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 8) returns [2, 12, 4]: the 2nd by the 7th aspect, the 12th by the special 5th-place aspect, and the 4th by the special 9th-place aspect. The commentator's note on this very aspect (p. 82) is given above: he expected it to bring wealth, and the sutras do not say so. The aspect falls on a house Jupiter signifies: BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Jupiter the karaka of the 2nd. The 2nd house page covers Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16's rule that a house prospers when aspected by a benefic, and BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 19 adds Jupiter's aspect in full.

BPHS states no specific result for Jupiter's aspect from the 8th onto the 2nd, 12th or 4th, and this page states none. Argala adds one structural point: by BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9 a planet in the 11th from a house causes Argala on it, and the 8th is the 11th from the 10th, so a Jupiter in the 8th causes Argala on the 10th. Ch. 31 reads Argala on the 8th itself as "difficulties". The Argala calculator works these out.

Yogas that want a benefic in the 8th

  • Lagn Adhi Yog (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 37): benefics in the 7th and 8th from the Lagna, free of conjunction with or aspect from malefics, make a great person, learned in the shastras and happy. A Jupiter in the 8th is such a benefic in every company, and the malefic-free condition decides.
  • Parvat Yog (Ch. 36 Sl. 7-8): benefics in Kendras with the 7th and 8th vacant or holding only benefics. A Jupiter in the 8th keeps that condition.
  • Ch. 39 Sl. 19 and 29-31: Raja Yogas from debilitated planets in the 3rd, 6th or 8th, the later slokas asking that the planet aspect the Lagna. Jupiter is debilitated in the 8th only for Gemini rising, in Capricorn, and from the 8th it aspects the 2nd, 12th and 4th, never the Lagna. The app does not test these slokas.

Scorpio and Aquarius rising carry the 2nd lord into the 8th, which Sl. 20 reads as abundant land and wealth, the house's "wealth of the dead". Gemini rising is the weakest row by dignity, Jupiter in its fall as lord of two angles. Pisces rising carries the Lagna and 10th lords into the 8th in Venus's sign. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Sign, company and the Moon

Saravali Ch. 27, Jupiter by sign: Sagittarius (Taurus rising) a preceptor, fond of solitude and shrines; Pisces (Leo rising) knows the Vedas, calm in action; Cancer (Sagittarius rising) a scholar, with long-lived sons; Scorpio (Aries rising) a commentator, a builder of temples, with many difficulties; Leo (Capricorn rising) at home in hills, forts and temples; Capricorn (Gemini rising) grief and want. Several sign readings name the religious or learned side the sutras' exception names ("learned and saintly"); they make no reference to house.

Company, by Saravali Ch. 15: with Saturn (Sl. 21), the 8th's karaka, heroic and wealthy, head of an association; with Mars, intelligent and expert in speech; with the Moon, firm in friendship; with Mercury, a scholar; with Venus, lives by learning and argument; with the Sun, a king's minister. The engine's Gaja Kesari follows BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4, so an 8th-house Jupiter, not in an angle from the Lagna, needs the Moon in the 8th, 11th, 2nd or 5th house and a benefic joining it or aspecting it from the 2nd; Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 79) withdraws the rapport with Jupiter 6th or 8th from the Moon, here the Moon in the 3rd or the 1st.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading's planet row is favourable only when dignity is strong and the house is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. A Jupiter in the 8th therefore always prints "reduced longevity and integrity strain otherwise", including the three exception Lagnas the favourable line was written for; the favourable line is never printed here, and the same limit holds for every planet in the 8th.

dashaQuality() rates a dasha lord in a dusthana challenging. The Shad Bala does not read the house verdict: position follows dignity, directional strength is 0.67 of 4, one house from the 7th where it is nil, and the Panaphara label is not part of the engine's score. Jupiter's own Ashtakavarga (BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 53-55) marks the 8th place from a contributor good for only three of eight, the Sun, Mars and Jupiter; the Lagna is not among them. The Shad Bala calculator and Ashtakavarga calculator show both.

Timing

Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 49-51 give the reverse of Jupiter's good dasha for a Jupiter debilitated, combust, joined by malefics, or in the 6th or 8th; the 8th is named outright. The same slokas add that the trouble belongs to the start of the period and the later part brings gains and recognition, and the app's testing theme for Jupiter follows them. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 repeat that the dashas of planets placed in the 8th are unfavourable, and Sl. 5-8 say the placement at the start of the dasha counts as well as at birth.

Ch. 42 Sl. 13 adds a company rule for timing: a planet associated with a Trika lord, and lacking any aspect from a Kona lord, harms finances in its dasha. A Jupiter in the 8th sits in a Trika house and is often the Trika lord itself; for Aries, Cancer and Leo rising it is a Kona lord too. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time results within the period by decanate, reversed when the planet was retrograde at birth, which happens for Jupiter on about 30 per cent of days in this engine's positions; combustion within 11 degrees, on about 7 per cent, removes the position score in the engine.

For Taurus and Leo rising it is also the 8th lord's period, which this app words, with the death wording removed on purpose, as "major transformation and financial caution - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha". BPHS Ch. 56 reads several sub-periods by the sub-lord's house counted "from the Lord of the Dasha", that is from Jupiter: from an 8th-house Jupiter, planets in the 8th, 11th, 2nd and 5th houses are in angles from it and those in the 12th and 4th in trines; planets in the 1st, 3rd and 7th houses are 6th, 8th and 12th from it. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period. For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, where the 8th is testing for every planet.

Jupiter in its own sign meets the sutras' exception; as the 8th lord in the 8th it meets BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 92 and the engine's Sarala; as owner of the 5th, a Kona, it meets Ch. 34's auspicious clause. The commentator's good-house rule cuts the other way for the 5th it carries into the 8th. The engine prints the testing line and grades the dasha challenging, by its dusthana rule.

Saturn, the 8th's own karaka, aspects Jupiter from the 2nd by its 7th aspect, a malefic aspect that removes the aspect score; Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 55-60 read Saturn's aspect on a Jupiter in its own signs as "dirty ... fear-stricken ... devoid of happiness". Jupiter aspects the 2nd back, where Saturn sits, and the 4th and 12th. The Moon in the 10th is 3rd from Jupiter, so no Gaja Kesari, and Lagn Adhi Yog fails on the malefic aspect. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Jupiter is in the eighth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Is Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer (Taurus, Leo, Sagittarius rising)? That is the sutras' exception.
  3. Find what Jupiter rules: a Trika lordship is a Vipareeta case; a trine or the Lagna is the commentator's good-house warning.
  4. Read both Ch. 24 slokas for those lords in the 8th, and Ch. 34's clause on the 8th lord's other house.
  5. Check for malefics joining or aspecting Jupiter, for Lagn Adhi Yog.
  6. Read the app's testing row knowing it applies the dusthana rule to every sign.

How to weigh a yoga is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Jupiter in the 8th shortens life." That is the sutras' default; Saravali says long-lived, the sutras except own sign and exaltation, and this app computes no lifespan.
  • "Jupiter protects the 8th." Saravali's general rule says benefics prove adverse there, and its own verse is harsh apart from longevity.
  • "Own-sign Jupiter in the 8th is favourable in the app." The planet row is always testing in a dusthana.
  • "Sarala Yoga settles it." BPHS supports the 8th lord in the 8th (Sl. 92) but reads the yoga's other cases differently.
  • "Jupiter in the 8th means spiritual depth." That is the engine's favourable line for own sign or exaltation, which it never prints, and the sutras' "saintly" for the same cases.
  • "Jupiter in the 8th means inheritance." The house lists the wealth of the dead; no verse for this placement mentions it.
  • "A Panaphara is a good house, so the 8th is softened." The label only raises positional strength (BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5); it does not change the readings.

Questions about Jupiter in the 8th

Is Jupiter bad in the 8th house?
The texts disagree. The Bhrigu Sutras read it as short-lived unless Jupiter is in its own sign or exalted; Saravali reads it as long-lived but in service and humiliated. The commentator thinks an unafflicted Jupiter should enhance longevity, and elsewhere (p. 86) gives a Vipareeta Raja yoga for a 6th, 8th or 12th lord.
Which rising signs get the sutras' exception?
Taurus (Jupiter in Sagittarius), Leo (Pisces) and Sagittarius (exalted in Cancer).
What does Jupiter aspect from the 8th?
The 2nd by its 7th aspect, the 12th by its 5th-place aspect and the 4th by its 9th-place aspect. The 2nd is one of the houses Jupiter signifies.
Does Jupiter in the 8th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
For six rising signs this app names one: Harsha for Cancer and Libra, Sarala for Taurus and Leo, Vimala for Aries and Capricorn.
Why is the app's line always testing here?
The planet row needs a house outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The favourable line written for the exception exists but is never selected.
Is a Jupiter dasha difficult with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 49-51 name the 8th among the conditions for an adverse Jupiter dasha, with the trouble at the start and gains later; Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 agree. The app grades it challenging.
Does Jupiter in the 8th say anything about lifespan?
The texts disagree about it. This app computes no lifespan and makes no such statement.
Why does the 8th matter to Jupiter's own houses?
The 8th is the 12th from the 9th, one of the four houses BPHS makes Jupiter the significator of, and the commentator reads the 8th as damaging the good houses Jupiter owns (p. 82). From the 8th, Jupiter also aspects the 2nd, another of its houses.
What is Lagn Adhi Yoga?
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 37: benefics in the 7th and 8th from the Lagna, free of malefic conjunction and aspect. A Jupiter in the 8th can be one of them.
