Jupiter in the 7th house is one of the placements on which Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras agree; the sutras' closing Note says all its authorities give "very good results". Saravali gives a charming native with a beautiful spouse, greater than his father, eloquent, a poet, learned and famous; the sutras give one who is highly educated though worried, with financial gains and a learned, chaste, devoted spouse, and turn to relations outside marriage if the 7th lord is weak or joined or aspected by Rahu, Ketu, Saturn or Mars.

From the 7th Jupiter aspects the Lagna, and it is the one house where BPHS gives Jupiter no directional strength. This page sets out the verses, the yogas and the Kendra blemish that meet in this house for Gemini and Virgo rising, what Jupiter owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 7th house, Yuvati Bhava.

Sources, and marriage

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The 7th house texts were written about a man's wife, count wives and give ages at marriage; this page names those verses without reproducing them. Nothing here is a statement about your marriage or partner.

The great benefic in the house of the spouse

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 8 gives Yuvati Bhava wife, travel, trade, loss of sight and death; Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31 name it Stri and Kama; BPHS Ch. 29 calls its Arudha the Dar Pad. It is an angle, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 call the 7th and 10th "specially for happiness". Its fixed significator is Venus (Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34).

There is one further tie between Jupiter and this house. The modern introduction to the Bhrigu Sutras (p. 5) records "another school of thought that Jupiter represents the husband in a female's chart", where its own text gives the Sun. On that school's reading a Jupiter in the 7th is the significator of the husband in the house of the spouse. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 give the 7th's fixed significator as Venus, and Sl. 18-21 give Venus the husband too; this page reports the other school as a recorded view, not a rule.

Being an angle brings the angle rules. BPHS Ch. 10 Sl. 2 says Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in an angle destroys the evils of the preceding chapter; Ch. 12 Sl. 5-7 give long life, wealth, intelligence and the king's liking for Jupiter in an angle or trine; Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 18 says Jupiter in an angle makes the middle of life happy.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 56

The verse in full: the native will be charming, will acquire a beautiful wife, be greater than his father, be an eloquent speaker, a poet, a superior person and be learned and famous. No condition is stated. "Greater than his father" is unusual in a 7th-house verse, since BPHS reads the father from the 9th and 10th; Brihat Jatak and Phaldeepika, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them, say the same, and none of them explains it.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 35-37

The sutras (p. 80): highly educated and also worried; much financial gain; a learned, chaste wife devoted to her husband. If the 7th lord is weak, or joined or aspected by Rahu, Ketu, Saturn or Mars, relations outside marriage, which this page names and does not elaborate. With benefics, or in its own sign or exaltation, one wife only, wealth through her, happiness and great respect in the 34th year. The commentator (p. 80) applies the adverse case to Jupiter itself joined or aspected by those malefics, and names Hamsa for own sign or exaltation. Other Views (p. 81): Brihat Jatak, excelling his father; Phaldeepika, a good wife, children, more generous than his father; Chamatkar Chintamani, highly intelligent, powerful and handsome. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. The engine's lines were written from the same chapter: favourable, "an educated, devoted partnership and real financial gains through marriage"; testing, "real strain in fidelity or partnership under affliction".

The condition again looks first to the 7th lord, as Jupiter's sutras do for the 5th and 10th, though the commentator extends it to Jupiter. It names four malefics, not the Sun. For Gemini and Virgo rising the 7th lord is Jupiter itself, so the condition reads Jupiter's own strength and company; for every other Lagna it sends the reader to another planet.

Condensed from Saravali Ch. 30 (saravali.txt 4634-4963) and the Bhrigu Sutras' 7th-house sutras (pp. 25, 39, 55, 68, 80, 93, 104).

Jupiter's reading is the most thoroughly learned in the column: eloquent, a poet, learned in Saravali; highly educated, with a learned spouse, in the sutras. And Jupiter is one of the four planets Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 45 lists as giving a spouse who "corresponds to those planets and signs", with the further instruction that the 7th be judged from the Ascendant and the Moon, the stronger mattering more.

Gemini and Virgo rising: Hamsa and the Kendra blemish

Jupiter owns the 7th for Gemini rising (Sagittarius, with the 10th) and Virgo rising (Pisces, with the 4th), and in the 7th it is in its own sign. Several rules then meet in one planet. BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 1: the 7th lord in its own sign or exaltation gives "full happiness through his wife (and marriage)". Ch. 24 Sl. 79: the 7th lord in the 7th gives happiness through the spouse. The sutras' 7th-lord condition reads Jupiter itself. And BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 form Hamsa for Jupiter in its own sign in an angle, which the Bhrigu Sutras commentator names for this house (p. 81).

Against them stands BPHS Ch. 34. Sl. 25-26 and 31-32 call Jupiter malefic for both Lagnas, which make it the owner of two angles and no trine; Sl. 8-10 rank its angular blemish second only to Venus's; and this app lists Kendradhipathya Dosha for Gemini and Virgo Lagnas, graded mild, with the note that the benefic nature is muted, not reversed. For Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces the 7th lord is a natural benefic owning two angles, the case Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 single out. A Gemini- or Virgo-rising Jupiter in the 7th therefore shows Hamsa, the favourable row and the dosha together.

BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 4-5 read a strong 7th lord joined or aspected by a benefic as wealthy, honourable, happy and fortunate. Sl. 14-15 give a spouse endowed with virtues when the 7th lord is exalted and the 7th holds a strong Lagna lord and a benefic; Jupiter is not exalted in the 7th for these Lagnas. The yogas calculator lists Hamsa when present.

Capricorn rising gives the third Hamsa case: Jupiter exalted in Cancer in the 7th, as lord of the 3rd and 12th. Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 call Jupiter malefic for Capricorn; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator, in this very house (pp. 80-81), quotes Uttara Kalamrita that Jupiter owning the 3rd and 12th "will be productive of good".

No directional strength, and the aspect on the Lagna

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7-7 1/2 measure Jupiter's directional strength from the 7th, full at the Lagna and nil at the 7th. This engine gives Jupiter 0 of 4 here, the one house where that component is empty. The Shad Bala calculator shows the other five parts.

From the 7th, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 7) returns [1, 11, 3]: the Lagna by the 7th aspect, the 11th by the special 5th-place aspect and the 3rd by the special 9th-place aspect. Every planet aspects the 7th from itself (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5), and Ch. 12 Sl. 3-4 make the body comfortable when the Lagna is joined or aspected by a benefic. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 31) adds that Jupiter or Mercury with directional strength and a benefic's aspect can "nullify a hundred defects"; from the 7th Jupiter gives the aspect to the Lagna but has none of the directional strength itself.

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 19 adds Jupiter's aspect in full where other benefics add a quarter. The 11th is the house of gains, which sits beside the sutras' "financial gains"; the texts connect the two no further.

What Jupiter owns, from each rising sign

Jupiter is in your 7th when it occupies the sign opposite your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. In Ch. 24, for lords in the 7th, the 5th, 9th and 10th lords read as unmixed happiness, the 6th, 8th and 12th lords disturb the marriage.

Sagittarius and Pisces rising carry the Lagna lord into the 7th, and BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 7 reads a benefic Lagna lord there as wandering and dejection, or kingship if the planet is strong; Jupiter is a benefic in every company, so the sloka's strength clause decides. For both, Jupiter in the 7th is in Mercury's sign, an enemy's sign by nature. Cancer rising puts Jupiter in its fall as the 9th lord, the row Sl. 103 otherwise reads as fortune after marriage, and Aries rising carries the same 9th-lord sloka in Libra, Venus's sign.

Two Ch. 18 slokas that need more than Jupiter

BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 16 says the wife "will incur evils" when the 7th house or its lord is joined by a malefic, especially if house or lord lacks strength. A Jupiter in the 7th is not that malefic, but it does not cancel one sitting beside it either. Sl. 17 keeps the severe reading for a 7th lord "devoid of strength" and in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or a 7th lord in fall. For Gemini and Virgo rising the 7th lord is Jupiter in its own sign in the 7th, so neither branch of Sl. 17 can apply to it.

BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 set a limit on what an angle confers: planets in mutual angles in their own, exalted or friendly signs become Yoga Karakas, and planets merely sitting in the 1st, 4th or 7th without such dignity "do not become such Yog Karakas". Five Lagnas put a 7th-house Jupiter in an enemy's sign or its fall by nature; for them, the angle alone does not lift it. Jupiter's two natural enemies are Mercury and Venus, and Venus is the 7th's own karaka: for Aries and Scorpio rising, Jupiter in the 7th sits in a sign of the karaka of the very house.

Gaja Kesari and the Moon

The engine's Gaja Kesari follows BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4. A 7th-house Jupiter is already in an angle from the Lagna, so it forms whenever Venus, Mercury or the Moon joins Jupiter or stands in the Lagna to aspect it, and Jupiter is free of fall, combustion and an enemy sign. With the Moon in the Lagna, Jupiter is 7th from it, the Moon's full aspect on Jupiter, which Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 25-66 read well in every sign group, with one blemish in Leo. With the Moon in the 4th, Jupiter is 4th from it; Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 8-13 read Jupiter in the 10th from the Moon well, which here means the Moon in the 10th house. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 79) says the rapport is lost with Jupiter 6th or 8th from the Moon, here the Moon in the 2nd or the 12th house.

The Navamsa, the Dar Pad and Argala

BPHS uses further charts for this house. Ch. 29 Sl. 30-37 read the Dar Pad, the 7th's Arudha, against the Lagna Pada: in mutual angles or trines, amity between the couple. Ch. 30 Sl. 1-6 give "full happiness from progeny and spouse" when the Upa Pad is joined or aspected by a benefic, and Jupiter's three aspects from the 7th may fall on it. The Bhava Padas calculator shows both. Ch. 31 gives an unobstructed benefic Argala on the 7th "abundant wealth and marital happiness", and by Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9 a planet in the 11th from a house causes Argala on it, so a Jupiter in the 7th causes Argala on the 9th; the Argala calculator works these out.

Sign and company

Saravali Ch. 27, Jupiter by sign: Sagittarius (Gemini rising) a preceptor, charitable, a minister; Pisces (Virgo rising) honoured by friends, calm in action; Cancer (Capricorn rising) a scholar, charitable, with long-lived sons; Taurus (Scorpio rising) attached to his wife, wealthy; Libra (Aries rising) a scholar with many sons and foreign assignments; Leo (Aquarius rising) lasting in friendship; Capricorn (Cancer rising) grief and life in other countries. Taurus's "attached to his wife" is the one sign reading that speaks to the 7th house's own subject; the sign readings make no reference to house.

Company decides the sutras' adverse case, and Saravali Ch. 15 reads each pair: with Mars, intelligent and expert in speech; with Saturn, heroic, wealthy, head of an association; with the Sun, a king's minister; with the Moon, firm in friendship; with Mercury, a scholar; with Venus, the 7th's karaka, lives by learning and argument. Mars and Saturn beside Jupiter are, by the sutras, malefics with the 7th lord whenever Jupiter is that lord; Saravali's kind readings of the pairs sit beside that without comment.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Jupiter's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 7th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides: Jupiter in the 7th in a friendly sign shows the favourable line, in an enemy's sign the testing one.

  • Always favourable: Gemini (Moolatrikona or own), Virgo (own) and Capricorn (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Cancer (debilitated), and Aries, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces, Venus's and Mercury's signs, Neutral at best.
  • Favourable only with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Taurus, Libra and Aquarius (otherwise Neutral) and Leo (otherwise Enemy sign).

So the three always-favourable Lagnas are three for which Ch. 34 calls Jupiter malefic, and two of them carry the app's own Kendradhipathya Dosha. For dual-sign Lagnas the engine's strength reason text also calls the 7th a "badhaka house (sensitive to affliction)"; no page on this site explains that label, and this page reports it without interpretation. Jupiter's own Ashtakavarga (BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 53-55) marks the 7th place from a contributor good for five of eight, the Lagna among them.

Timing

Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 give acquisition of a kingdom, recognition, conveyances, devotion and happiness in respect of wife and children for a Jupiter exalted, in its own sign or Moolatrikona, in the 5th, 9th or 10th, or in its own or exalted Navamsa. The 7th is not on that house list, so for this placement Jupiter's sign decides; "happiness through spouse" is among the results named.

Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 list the periods of planets placed in the 2nd or 7th, or associated with their lords, among the unfavourable ones, and Sl. 5-8 give the 7th lord's period "distress to wife and the possibility of the death of the native". For Gemini and Virgo rising this app words the 7th-lord theme as "strain in partnership and marriage - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha", beside the 10th or 4th theme, and grades the period by dignity. BPHS does not name the 7th lord's period as the time of marriage.

BPHS Ch. 56 reads several sub-periods in Jupiter's dasha by the sub-lord's house counted "from the Lord of the Dasha", that is from Jupiter. From a 7th-house Jupiter, planets in the 7th, 10th, 1st and 4th houses are in angles from it and those in the 11th and 3rd in trines; planets in the 12th, 2nd and 6th houses are 6th, 8th and 12th from it. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period. For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Jupiter in the 7th from the Moon is favourable in its rule.

Jupiter at 29.40 degrees of Sagittarius is past the Moolatrikona band, so the label is Own sign. The 7th-lord rules apply (Ch. 18 Sl. 1, Ch. 24 Sl. 79), Hamsa forms, and the Moon beside Jupiter, with Mercury aspecting it from the Lagna, gives the engine's Gaja Kesari; the engine does not hold Mercury's combustion against it as a benefic. The Kendra-Kona entry pairs Jupiter, a Kendra lord, with Mercury, the Lagna lord, in mutual aspect across the 1st and 7th. Mercury itself forms Bhadra in the Lagna.

The sutras' adverse condition looks to the 7th lord, Jupiter, and its company: Ketu shares Sagittarius, one of the four planets the sutras name. The Sun and Rahu aspect Jupiter from the Lagna, both malefics in the engine. Ch. 34 calls Jupiter malefic for Gemini, and the app lists the mild Kendradhipathya Dosha. Directional strength is zero, and the reason text adds the badhaka label. Jupiter is retrograde, which earns its motion point and reverses its dasha timing by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Jupiter is in the sign opposite your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Find the 7th lord: is it weak, or with Rahu, Ketu, Saturn or Mars? That is the sutras' adverse case.
  3. Read both Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Jupiter rules.
  4. For Gemini and Virgo rising, read Ch. 18 Sl. 1 and the Kendradhipathya entry together; look for Hamsa.
  5. Check the Moon's house for Gaja Kesari, and judge the 7th from the Moon too, as Saravali Ch. 34 asks.
  6. Look at the Navamsa, the chart BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to the spouse.

How to weigh a yoga is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Jupiter in the 7th guarantees a good marriage." The sutras turn it adverse when the 7th lord is weak or with Rahu, Ketu, Saturn or Mars.
  • "Jupiter in the 7th means the spouse is older or a teacher." The verses say learned and devoted; no age is given.
  • "Hamsa in the 7th cancels the Kendra blemish." For Gemini and Virgo rising the app lists both.
  • "Jupiter in the 7th is strong." Its directional strength is nil here; its total depends on dignity.
  • "Jupiter is the husband's significator." That is one school, recorded in the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction; BPHS gives Venus for the 7th and for the husband.
  • "The 7th lord's dasha brings marriage." BPHS does not say so.
  • "Any planet in an angle becomes a Yoga Karaka." BPHS Ch. 32 withholds that from planets in the 1st, 4th or 7th without own, exalted or friendly dignity.

Questions about Jupiter in the 7th

Is Jupiter good in the 7th house?
Both texts read it well: a beautiful spouse, eloquence, learning and fame (Saravali); high education, financial gains and a learned, devoted spouse (Bhrigu Sutras), turned adverse if the 7th lord is weak or with Rahu, Ketu, Saturn or Mars.
Which rising signs get Hamsa Yoga from Jupiter in the 7th?
Gemini (Sagittarius), Virgo (Pisces) and Capricorn (exalted in Cancer).
What does Jupiter aspect from the 7th?
The Lagna by its 7th aspect, the 11th by its 5th-place aspect and the 3rd by its 9th-place aspect.
Why is my Jupiter in the 7th marked testing?
Its dignity label is not Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly. Cancer rising (fall) and Aries, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces rising (enemy signs) never get the favourable line.
Is Jupiter in the 7th a problem for Gemini or Virgo rising?
BPHS Ch. 34 calls Jupiter malefic for both as owner of two angles, and the app lists a mild Kendradhipathya Dosha. The same placement forms Hamsa and meets BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 1.
Why is Jupiter's directional strength zero here?
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures it from the 7th: full at the Lagna, nil in the 7th. The engine gives 0 of 4.
Does Jupiter in the 7th describe the spouse?
Saravali and the sutras describe a learned, devoted spouse, and Saravali Ch. 34 says a benefic in the 7th shapes the spouse. This app makes no statement about anyone's partner.
Is a Jupiter dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 read a dignified Jupiter well, with happiness in respect of wife and children among the results; Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 list planets in the 7th as unfavourable. The app grades the period by dignity.
