Mercury in the 7th house is one of the placements on which Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras broadly agree; the Bhrigu Sutras' own Note says all its authorities give good effects here. Saravali gives a learned, good-looking and affluent spouse "not of good descent" who promotes quarrels, and calls the native "very great"; the sutras give a wide reputation and respect from the government, a good spouse with benefics, one spouse if the 7th lord is strong, and loss of the spouse if it is weak or afflicted. BPHS lists trade among the 7th house's significations, and trade is also what it judges from Mercury.
The 7th is also the house where BPHS gives Mercury no directional strength at all, the exact opposite of its peak in the Lagna. This page sets out the verses, the 7th-lord rules that apply when Mercury owns the house, Bhadra Yoga, Mercury's aspect on the Lagna, and how this app grades the placement, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mercury in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 7th house, Yuvati Bhava.
Sources, and marriage
Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The 7th house texts were written about a man's wife, count wives and give ages at marriage; this page names those verses without reproducing them. Nothing here is a statement about your marriage or partner.
Trade, partnership and the planet of dealings
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 8: "Wife, travel, trade, loss of sight, death etc. be known from Yuvati Bhava." Five items, one of them marriage. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31 name the house Stri and Kama, Dyuna, Astha, Jaya and Jamitra; the Bhrigu Sutras' modern list (p. 15) adds a partner in business and legal bondage. BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 name business dealings, livelihood and friends as what is judged from Mercury.
So trade is on both lists, and only one verse in BPHS's Ch. 24 table for the house speaks to its trade side: the 8th lord with a malefic in the 7th is "downfall in his business" (Sl. 91). BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 7-8 1/2 do tie Mercury in the 7th to traders, in a list of the kinds of women the native associates with ("females, belonging to traders' community" among them), which this page names and does not apply. No text draws a conclusion about trade itself from Mercury here.
The 7th is an angle (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36), and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 call the 7th and 10th "specially for happiness". It is also a Marak house in BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5, a longevity term this app does not compute. Its fixed significator is Venus (Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34), and Venus never strays more than about three signs from Mercury in this engine's positions, so a 7th-house Mercury often has the 7th's karaka nearby.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 44
The verse in full: the native's wife will be very learned, beautiful in appearance, will not be of good descent, will promote quarrels and be very affluent; the native himself will be very great. No condition is stated. The verse describes the partner more than the native, which is what Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 45 says Jupiter, the Moon, Venus or Mercury in the 7th does: the wife corresponds to that planet. Sl. 47 adds one wife if Mercury and Jupiter join in the 7th. The texts were written about a man's wife; this page reports them as such.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 48-56
The sutras (p. 68): happiness from the mother and comforts of horses (the commentator reads both from the 7th as the 4th from the 4th); religious and broad-minded; a widespread reputation, respected by the government. With benefics, a palanquin and a good wife, though a non-vegetarian diet. A strong 7th lord gives one wife; a weak one, or one in a malefic's house or with Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, loss of the wife; in a female chart the text says loss of the husband and a disease of the skin, which this page names and does not apply. The engine's lines were written from the same chapter: favourable, "a wise, well-regarded partnership - a placement capable of forming real Raja Yoga with the right support"; testing, "real strain in partnership under affliction".
The commentator (p. 68) adds Bhadra for own sign or exaltation and Lagnadhi yoga when Jupiter or Venus join Mercury in the 6th, 7th or 8th without malefics. Other Views (pp. 68-69). Brihat Jatak: knowledge of law and the rules of the country, which the Note finds irrelevant to the 7th. Phaldeepika: wise, well dressed, glorious, married to a wealthy wife. Chamatkar Chintamani: gives happiness to his wife but is not very virile, handsome and wealthy. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

Mercury is one of four planets whose Saravali verse for the 7th reads well, with the Moon, Jupiter and Venus: the four Saravali Ch. 34 lists as giving a spouse that corresponds to them. It is the only one of the four whose verse adds a friction, quarrels, to the spouse it describes. And Mercury's and Jupiter's sutras both turn on the 7th lord's strength, not on their own.
The 7th lord: Sagittarius and Pisces rising
Mercury owns the 7th for Sagittarius rising (Gemini, with the 10th) and Pisces rising (Virgo, with the 4th), and in the 7th it is in its own sign or exalted. BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 1 opens the house's chapter with exactly this case: the 7th lord in its own sign or exaltation gives "full happiness through his wife (and marriage)". Ch. 24 Sl. 79 reads the 7th lord in the 7th as happiness through the spouse, courageous, skilful and intelligent (with windy diseases), the plainly good row for marriage. And the sutras' "one spouse if the 7th lord is strong" is met by Mercury itself. Ch. 18 Sl. 6 pulls the other way for Pisces rising: a 7th lord in exaltation gives "many wives", the same verse that names a 7th lord in a sign of Saturn or Venus.
Both Lagnas make Mercury the lord of two angles and no trine, the case BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 single out: benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects. Sl. 8-10 make Mercury the second-least affected of the benefics, and this engine's Kendradhipati Dosha leaves Mercury out. Ch. 34 Sl. 37-38 still credit Mercury with a Yoga with the Sun for Sagittarius, and Sl. 43-44 call it malefic and a killer for Pisces; "killer" belongs to the Marak doctrine, which the app does not apply.
Both also form Bhadra Yoga, Mercury in its own or exaltation sign in an angle (BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2; the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names it for this house, p. 68). The yogas calculator lists it. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 add a limit: planets merely sitting in the 1st, 4th or 7th without own, exalted or friendly dignity "do not become such Yog Karakas".
Two more Ch. 18 slokas bear on these Lagnas. Sl. 4-5: a strong 7th lord joined or aspected by a benefic makes the native wealthy, honourable, happy and fortunate, a result about the whole life, not only marriage. Sl. 14-15: a spouse endowed with virtues when the 7th lord is exalted and the 7th house holds a strong Lagna lord and a benefic. For Pisces rising Mercury is the exalted 7th lord, and the Lagna lord is Jupiter, so Jupiter in Virgo beside Mercury, in an enemy's sign by nature, would supply the Lagna-lord clause.
The app's favourable line says the placement is "capable of forming real Raja Yoga with the right support", and the support is a trine lord. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 give a yoga for an angle lord and a trine lord joined, exchanged or in full mutual aspect, and the engine tests that link. For Sagittarius rising the 9th lord is the Sun, and Ch. 34 names Mercury's Yoga with the Sun for this Lagna; the Sun beside Mercury in Gemini completes it, though it also makes Mercury likely combust. For Pisces rising the trine lords are the Moon (5th) and Mars (9th).
Company also decides the Marak question. BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 3 names as Marakas the lords of the 2nd and 7th, malefics in those houses, and malefics joined to those lords. A Mercury in the 7th is a benefic occupant unless malefic company turns it, and the 7th lord only for Sagittarius and Pisces rising. This app computes no longevity, and every chart passes through several such periods.
What Mercury owns, from each rising sign
Mercury is in your 7th when it occupies the sign opposite your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. In Ch. 24, for lords in the 7th, the 5th, 9th and 10th lords read as unmixed happiness, the 6th, 8th and 12th lords disturb the marriage.
| Ascendant | Mercury's sign | Natural dignity | Mercury rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 7th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Libra | Friendly | 3rd, 6th | Sl. 31: serving the king; happy at the end of life. Sl. 67: deprived of happiness through wedlock, yet famous |
| Taurus | Scorpio | Neutral | 2nd, 5th | Sl. 19: a doctor (other clauses omitted). Sl. 55: honourable, very religious, happy through children |
| Gemini | Sagittarius | Neutral | 1st, 4th | Sl. 7: if a benefic, wandering, or kingship if strong. Sl. 43: high education, gives up patrimony |
| Cancer | Capricorn | Neutral | 3rd, 12th | Sl. 31 as above. Sl. 139: expenditure on account of the spouse |
| Leo | Aquarius | Neutral | 2nd, 11th | Sl. 19 as above. Sl. 127: gains through the spouse's relatives |
| Virgo | Pisces | Debilitated | 1st, 10th | Sl. 7 as above. Sl. 115: happiness through the spouse, eloquent, truthful |
| Libra | Aries | Neutral | 9th, 12th | Sl. 103: happiness after marriage, famous. Sl. 139 as above |
| Scorpio | Taurus | Friendly | 8th, 11th | Sl. 91: with a malefic, "downfall in his business". Sl. 127 as above |
| Sagittarius | Gemini | Own | 7th, 10th | Sl. 79: happiness through the spouse, skilful. Sl. 115 as above |
| Capricorn | Cancer | Enemy | 6th, 9th | Sl. 67 as above. Sl. 103 as above |
| Aquarius | Leo | Friendly | 5th, 8th | Sl. 55 as above. Sl. 91 as above |
| Pisces | Virgo | Exalted | 4th, 7th | Sl. 43 as above. Sl. 79 as above |
Gemini and Virgo rising carry the Lagna lord into the 7th, and BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 7 makes that row turn on the planet's nature and strength: a benefic Lagna lord in the 7th gives wandering and dejection, or kingship if strong. Mercury's benefic nature itself depends on company, so the sloka's first branch applies only to a Mercury acting as a benefic. For Virgo, Mercury is debilitated in Pisces, the weakest case. Sagittarius and Virgo rising carry the 10th lord, which Sl. 115 reads as happiness through the spouse, eloquence and truthfulness, close to Mercury's own speech.
Directional strength nil, and the aspect on the Lagna
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7-7 1/2 compute Mercury's directional strength from the arc to the 7th house, so it peaks in the 1st and vanishes in the 7th. This engine gives Mercury 0 of 4 directional points here, the one house where that component is empty. The Shad Bala calculator shows the other five parts, which can still carry a dignified Mercury to Strong, as in the worked chart.
From the 7th, aspectedHouses('mercury', 7) returns [1]: the 7th aspect falls on the Lagna. BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3-4: bodily health suffers when the Lagna has a malefic's influence and no benefic's, and the body is comfortable when the Lagna is joined or aspected by a benefic. A benefic Mercury in the 7th is that aspect. So the house where Mercury is weakest by direction is the one from which it aspects the house where it is strongest.
The Sun at sunset
Mercury is never more than one sign from the Sun, and the Sun's house follows the clock, the 7th around sunset. A Mercury in the 7th belongs to a birth with the Sun in the 6th, 7th or 8th, around sunset. With the Sun in the 6th, Mercury is in the 2nd from it and forms Vesi; with the Sun in the 8th, Vasi. With the Sun in the 7th too, the Sun's own Saravali verse for the house is harsh (poor, insulted, not well disposed to the spouse), the engine counts the Sun among its malefics, Mercury is often combust, and by BPHS's rule a Mercury with a malefic takes its nature.
BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 16: the wife "will incur evils" when the 7th house or its lord is joined by a malefic, especially if house or lord lacks strength. The Sun in the 7th is such a malefic. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 4 reads Mercury with the Sun as in service, sweet in speech, with fame, money and learning, and unsteady wealth.
Partnership, the Navamsa and the Dar Pad
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assign the spouse to the Navamsa, and Ch. 18 uses it repeatedly. The Navamsa calculator computes it. Ch. 29 Sl. 30-37 read the 7th's Arudha, the Dar Pad, against the Lagna Pada: in mutual angles or trines, amity between the couple. The Bhava Padas calculator shows it. Ch. 31 gives an unobstructed benefic Argala on the 7th "abundant wealth and marital happiness".
Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 45-46 add that the 7th can be judged from the Moon as well as the Ascendant, "the stronger of them having more significance". Chart matching is a separate method: the Kundli matching calculator compares two people, and a 7th-house Mercury describes one person's chart.
Saravali Ch. 26, Mercury by sign, adds the sign layer: Virgo (Pisces rising) virtuous, eloquent, skilled in writing; Gemini (Sagittarius rising) sweet in speech, an able speaker; Libra (Aries rising) business in many directions; Taurus (Scorpio rising) honestly earned wealth, a chaste wife; Leo (Aquarius rising) unfortunate in respect of wife, against his own race but favourable to others; Pisces (Virgo rising) lives abroad, without shastra learning. Libra's "business in many directions" sits beside the 7th house's trade; the sign readings make no reference to house.
Company is what the sutras turn on, and Saravali Ch. 15's Mercury pairs read each companion: with Venus (Sl. 18), the 7th's own karaka, abundantly rich, a student of the Vedas, good in speech, fond of song; with Jupiter (Sl. 17), a scholar, wise and happy; with the Moon (Sl. 9), skilled in poems, amiable to his wife; with Mars (Sl. 13), an unlucky wife and little wealth, which Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 156) reads as "eloquent but disputative"; with Saturn (Sl. 19), in debt, proud and deceiving. Venus, Jupiter and the Moon are the benefics that give the sutras' good spouse; Mars and Saturn are the malefics of BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 16.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Mercury's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 7th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The dignity function receives the chart, so friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.
- Always favourable: Sagittarius (own) and Pisces (exalted).
- Never favourable: Virgo (debilitated) and Capricorn (Cancer, Neutral at best).
- Favourable with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Aries, Scorpio and Aquarius (otherwise Neutral; for Aquarius rising the lord is the Sun, so a Sun beside Mercury in Leo drops it), and Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Libra (otherwise Enemy sign).
For dual-sign Lagnas the engine's strength reason text calls the 7th a "badhaka house (sensitive to affliction)", as in the worked chart. No page on this site explains the label, so this page reports it and does not interpret it.
Timing
Mercury has 17 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65 read a Mercury exalted or in its own or a friend's sign well; the 7th is not on that passage's house list (the 11th, 5th, 9th), so dignity decides. Ch. 58 Sl. 1-3 give Mercury's own sub-period, when Mercury is well placed, as piety, success in education, name and fame, wealth and happiness from wife, children and parents.
Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 pull the other way for this house in particular: the periods of planets associated with the lords of the 2nd and 7th, or placed in those houses, are listed among the unfavourable ones. A Mercury in the 7th is a planet placed in the 7th. BPHS leaves Ch. 47's dignity test and Ch. 48's house test side by side, and the app grades the period by dignity and the dusthanas only, so a dignified 7th-house Mercury grades good there.
BPHS Ch. 58 reads several sub-periods in Mercury's dasha by the sub-lord's house counted "from the Lord of the Dasha", that is from Mercury. From a Mercury in the 7th house, planets in the 7th, 10th, 1st and 4th houses are in angles from it, planets in the 11th and 3rd in trines, and a planet in the 5th is 11th from it; planets in the 12th, 2nd and 6th houses are 6th, 8th and 12th from it and read poorly by that count.
For Sagittarius and Pisces rising it is also the 7th lord's period. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give that dasha "distress to wife and the possibility of the death of the native"; this app keeps the direction and drops the mention of death, wording it "strain in partnership and marriage - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha", and shows the 10th or 4th theme beside it. BPHS does not name the 7th lord's dasha as the time of marriage. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Mercury Mahadasha page the sub-periods. For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Mercury in the 7th from the Moon is favourable in the engine's benefic rule.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 19:53 IST on 11 September 2013 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Pisces-rising case: Mercury exalted as 4th and 7th lord in the 7th, with Bhadra. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Pisces 25.34 deg |
| Mercury | Virgo 9.76 deg, 7th house, Exalted, not combust; 4th and 7th lord |
| Sun | Leo 24.97 deg, 6th house |
| Jupiter; Mars | Gemini 21.65 deg, 4th; Cancer 15.18 deg, 5th |
| Venus, Saturn, Rahu | Libra, 8th house |
| Moon; Ketu | Scorpio 10.44 deg, 9th; Aries, 2nd |
| House line | Favourable: phMercury7F |
| dashaQuality for Mercury | Good |
| Yogas reported (selection) | Bhadra [Mercury] |
| Shad Bala (engine, of 20) | 13.88, Strong: position 10, aspect 1.5, natural 0.375, motion 1, direction 0, time 1 |
| Strength reason text | Exalted in Virgo, kendra house (7th), badhaka house (sensitive to affliction) |
| Dasha | Saturn to 29 July 2022, then Mercury to 2039 |
Here Mercury is not combust: the Sun is in Leo, 14.6 degrees away, just outside the engine's 14-degree orb, so Mercury keeps its full position score and reaches Strong despite directional strength of zero. The Sun in the 6th puts Mercury in the 2nd sign from it, the Vesi position. As the 7th lord exalted in the 7th, Mercury meets BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 1 and Ch. 24 Sl. 79, and the sutras' strong-7th-lord condition, all from one planet.
The counterweights are lordship and the label. Mercury owns two angles for Pisces, and Ch. 34 calls it malefic and a killer; the engine lists no Kendradhipati Dosha for Mercury. The engine also marks the 7th "badhaka" for this Lagna. Mercury aspects the Lagna, a benefic aspect on Pisces. The Mercury Mahadasha began in July 2022 and runs to 2039, graded good; Mercury at 9.76 degrees is in the first decanate, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the start of the period. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own chart
- Confirm Mercury is in the sign opposite your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator, and note the combust flag and where the Sun is.
- Find the 7th lord and judge its strength: the sutras' one-spouse condition turns on it.
- List Mercury's companions: benefics give the sutras' good spouse; a malefic in the 7th brings BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 16 in.
- Read both Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Mercury rules.
- For Sagittarius and Pisces rising, read Ch. 18 Sl. 1 for the 7th lord and look for Bhadra.
- Look at the Navamsa, as BPHS Ch. 7 asks for the spouse.
How to weigh a yoga is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.
Over-readings
- "Mercury in the 7th means a business partnership." Trade is on BPHS's list for the house; the verses for this placement describe the spouse and the native's reputation, not a partnership.
- "Mercury in the 7th means a younger or clever spouse." Saravali says learned, good-looking, affluent and quarrelsome; no verse mentions age.
- "A favourable app line means a good marriage." The line reads dignity; the sutras read the 7th lord and Mercury's company.
- "Mercury in the 7th is strong." Its directional strength is nil here; its total depends on dignity and combustion.
- "The 7th lord's dasha is when marriage happens." BPHS does not say so.
- "Bhadra in the 7th settles it." For Pisces rising Mercury also owns two angles, and Ch. 34 calls it malefic.
Questions about Mercury in the 7th
- Is Mercury good in the 7th house?
- Both texts read it well: a learned, affluent spouse and a "very great" native (Saravali); wide reputation and a good spouse with benefics (Bhrigu Sutras). Saravali adds quarrels and a spouse "not of good descent"; the sutras tie one spouse to a strong 7th lord and loss of the spouse to a weak or afflicted one.
- Which rising signs get Bhadra Yoga from Mercury in the 7th?
- Sagittarius (Mercury in Gemini) and Pisces (Mercury in Virgo). For both, Mercury is also the 7th lord.
- What does Mercury aspect from the 7th?
- The Lagna, by its 7th aspect. BPHS Ch. 12 counts a benefic aspect on the Lagna as supportive.
- Why is my Mercury in the 7th marked testing?
- Its dignity label is not Exalted, Own or Friendly. Virgo rising (debilitated in Pisces) and Capricorn rising (Cancer) never get the favourable line.
- Why is Mercury's directional strength zero here?
- BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures it from the 7th house: full in the 1st, nil in the 7th. The engine gives 0 of 4.
- Does Mercury in the 7th describe the spouse?
- Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 44 and Ch. 34 Sl. 45-46 read a benefic in the 7th as shaping the spouse. This app makes no statement about anyone's partner.
- What is the "badhaka" label?
- The engine's strength reason text uses it for the 7th with dual-sign Lagnas. No page on this site explains it, so this page reports it without interpretation.
- Does Mercury in the 7th have to do with trade?
- BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 8 lists trade among the 7th's significations, and BPHS Ch. 70 judges business dealings from Mercury. The verses for this placement speak of the spouse and reputation, not trade.
- Is a Mercury dasha good with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65 read a dignified Mercury well. For Sagittarius and Pisces rising it is also the 7th lord's dasha, which the app words as partnership needing extra care.
