Mercury in the 8th house is a placement where the sources agree against their own general rule. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 say benefics do badly in the 6th, 8th and 12th; yet Saravali's own verse for Mercury in the 8th gives a famous, strong, long-lived native who supports his family, equal to a king or a justice, and the Bhrigu Sutras give a good span of life, much land and wide fame. The sutras' commentator writes that "the above Sutras speak very well of Mercury in 8th house".

From the 8th Mercury also aspects the 2nd, which is the one position from which BPHS lets Mercury reverse Mars and Saturn in the house of wealth. This page sets out those statements, the yogas that involve a benefic in the 8th, what Mercury owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mercury in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 8th house, Randhra Bhava.

Sources, and longevity

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The 8th is the house of longevity, and the texts speak of long and short life and give ages. This page reports those readings as what the texts say; this app computes no lifespan, and nothing here is a statement about anyone's life or health.

The worst Dusthana, and the benefic that does well in it

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 gives Randhra Bhava longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and things past and to come. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31 name it Vinasa and Dehavivara. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator calls it "the worst Dusthana" (under Mars, p. 57) and, under the Moon (p. 40), counts it the 12th from the 9th; BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 make the same count for the 8th lord. Yet BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 name the 3rd and 8th as the two houses of longevity; the 8th is the house of life's length.

The house is a Dusthana, a Panaphara and a Chaturasra at once (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). The Panaphara label gives a planet here half of Kendradi Bal, against a quarter in the 6th and 12th (Ch. 27 Sl. 5), so of the three Dusthanas the 8th is the positionally strongest. Two planets break the 8th's pattern in the Bhrigu Sutras: Saturn, its karaka (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34), given a 75-year span, and Mercury, of which the sutras "speak very well".

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 45

The verse in full: the native will win famous names (titles), be strong, long-lived, will support his family and be equal to a king, or will become a justice. No condition is stated. Set it beside Saravali's own general rule in Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 (printed "86-81"), that benefics strengthen the houses they occupy but prove adverse in the 6th, 8th and 12th, with results running from full to nil by strength, aspect and dignity. The specific verse and the general rule disagree for Mercury in the 8th.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 57-63

The sutras (p. 69): a good span of life and a large area of land; seven children; respect and honour in many ways and widespread fame in the 25th year. A strong 8th lord, or an 8th lord exalted in Virgo and with a benefic, assures the full span; an 8th lord debilitated in Pisces and with malefics, a short life. The commentator doubts the seven children (the 8th has nothing to do with children) and adds that Mercury aspects the 2nd from here, so the native "should be wealthy also". The engine's lines were written from the same chapter: favourable, "longevity, land and a wide reputation - a surprisingly strong placement for Mercury"; testing, "reduced vitality under real affliction".

Other Views (p. 69). Brihat Jatak: widely known for his qualities. Phaldeepika: authority to award punishment (a judge or magistrate), wide reputation, long life, a supporter of his family. Chamatkar Chintamani: a hundred years of life, reputation abroad, wealth by royal favour or business, the company of women. The Note (p. 70) records full agreement that Mercury is very favourable here, with the 8th lord's condition to be kept in view. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them; the lifespan figures are the texts', not this app's.

Condensed from the Bhrigu Sutras' 8th-house sutras (pp. 26, 40, 56, 69, 81, 94, 105); ages and named ailments omitted.

Mercury's is the only reading in the column whose default is good and whose exception is bad. Every other planet's sutra starts from a difficulty and names its own dignity or a benefic companion as the way out; Mercury's starts from long life, land and fame and names a weak, afflicted 8th lord as the way in. Jupiter, the other natural benefic in the column, is read the opposite way: short-lived unless dignified.

The aspect on the 2nd: BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 16-18

From the 8th, aspectedHouses('mercury', 8) returns [2]: the 7th aspect on the 2nd, the house of wealth. The commentator uses that aspect for Mercury directly (p. 69): the sutras do not mention wealth, but Mercury aspects the Dhana Bhava from the 8th "and therefore the native should be wealthy also". The Note (p. 70) adds that a 2nd lord in the 8th "will not prove harmful because then he will be aspecting his own house".

BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 16-18 read Mars and Saturn together in the 2nd as wealth destroyed, and then reverse it: "Should Budh give a Drishti to Mangal and Sani in Dhan Bhava, there will be great wealth." Mercury's only full aspect is the 7th, so in a whole-sign chart that means Mercury in the 8th. The engine implements both halves: its "Dhan Bhava Caution (Mars-Saturn)" is graded mild, and is reported as reversed when Mercury sits in the 8th. The yogas and doshas calculator shows which applies. The 2nd house page covers the rule from the other side.

So a named poverty combination is undone by a planet sitting in the house the commentator calls the worst Dusthana. That fits the sutras' default reading of Mercury here: much land, a long span, wide fame. It also depends on Mercury acting as a benefic in the sense of the sloka; the sloka gives no condition on Mercury's own company.

Argala gives the 8th-house Mercury one more structural role. BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9: a planet in the 11th from a house causes Argala on it. The 8th is the 11th from the 10th, so a Mercury in the 8th causes Argala on the 10th, the house BPHS Ch. 32 makes Mercury the significator of. Ch. 31 also reads the 8th itself: an unobstructed Argala bearing on it denotes "difficulties". The Argala calculator works these out.

Yogas that want a benefic in the 8th

  • Lagn Adhi Yog (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 37): benefics in the 7th and 8th from the Lagna, free of conjunction with or aspect from malefics, make "a great person, learned in Shastras and happy". It is a favourable yoga that requires benefics in the 8th. A Mercury in the 8th counts as a benefic for it only without malefic company, by BPHS's own rule on Mercury.
  • Parvat Yog (Ch. 36 Sl. 7-8): benefics in Kendras with the 7th and 8th vacant or holding only benefics. A benefic Mercury in the 8th keeps that condition; a Mercury turned malefic by company does not.
  • The engine's Adhi check counts from the Moon: Mercury, Venus or Jupiter in the 6th, 7th or 8th from the Moon, free of malefic conjunction and aspect. That is a different count from BPHS's Lagna version.

Benefic-only yogas often lose Mercury to the Sun, which shares its sign on about half of all days. With Mercury in the 8th the Sun is in the 7th, 8th or 9th, so the Sun is in the 8th with Mercury in a large share of these charts, and Lagn Adhi Yog then fails on its malefic-company clause.

The Vipareeta yogas: six rising signs

This app names Harsha, Sarala or Vimala Yoga when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in one of those houses. Mercury rules two signs, so a Mercury in the 8th forms one for six rising signs.

AscendantMercury inMercury rulesYoga the engine namesBPHS Ch. 24 for those lords in the 8th

Two of these have BPHS behind them in a way the others do not. Ch. 24 Sl. 140, the 12th lord in the 8th, is the best sloka of its set, "will always gain", and the nearest thing in BPHS to the later idea that Trika lords in Trika houses turn out well. For Cancer and Libra rising Mercury is that 12th lord, and the sloka adds that the native speaks affably, Mercury's own signification of speech. And Sl. 92 reads the 8th lord in the 8th as long-lived (medium if weak), the Sarala case for Scorpio and Aquarius. The 8th lord in the 12th is read differently (Sl. 96, a short life), so Sarala as a single rule and Parashara's slokas diverge.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 read the 8th lord by its other house: specifically harmful if it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, auspicious if it also owns a Kona. Mercury is the 8th and 11th lord for Scorpio rising, the harmful pairing, and the 8th and 5th lord for Aquarius rising, the trine that offsets it.

The other six rising signs

Gemini and Virgo rising carry the Lagna lord into the 8th, which Sl. 8 reads as "an accomplished scholar" (and also sickly, thievish, angry and a gambler), so even the placement Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 treat as weakest for the body is given a real gift; scholarship is close to Mercury's own nature. Taurus and Leo rising carry the 2nd lord, which Sl. 20 reads as abundant land and wealth, fitting the house's "wealth of the dead". The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

The commentator states a general rule in the Mercury Note itself (p. 70), and again under Venus (p. 94): a Mercury in the 8th "as lord of an auspicious house" will adversely affect the significations of that house, except as 2nd lord, which aspects its own house from here. Mercury owns a good house for most Lagnas: the 5th for Taurus and Aquarius, the 9th for Libra and Capricorn, the Lagna for Gemini and Virgo, the 10th for Virgo and Sagittarius. So the commentator reads the occupant well and its lordships poorly, and says so in the same note.

BPHS Ch. 39 has Raja Yogas that use the 8th for weakness. Sl. 19: debilitated planets in the 3rd, 6th and 8th while the Lagna lord is exalted or in its own house and aspects the Lagna. Sl. 28: a debilitated 6th, 8th or 12th lord aspecting the Lagna. Sl. 29-31: a debilitated planet in the 6th or 8th aspecting the Lagna. A Mercury in the 8th is debilitated only for Leo rising, in Pisces, so that is the one Lagna where it can be one of Sl. 19's planets; from the 8th it aspects the 2nd, never the Lagna, so Sl. 29-31 cannot be met by it. The app does not test these Ch. 39 slokas. Ch. 42 Sl. 4-6 include the Lagna lord in the 8th among penury combinations when other conditions join it; for Gemini and Virgo rising that lord is Mercury.

The Sun in the afternoon, and strength

Mercury is never more than one sign from the Sun, and the Sun's house follows the clock, the 10th around midday and the 7th around sunset. A Mercury in the 8th belongs to a birth with the Sun in the 7th, 8th or 9th: the afternoon into sunset. With the Sun in the 7th, Mercury is 2nd from it and forms Vesi; with the Sun in the 9th, Vasi. With the Sun in the 8th too, the Sun's own Bhrigu reading for the house is difficult, the engine counts it a malefic, and Mercury is often combust.

Directional strength is near its lowest, one house from the 7th where it is nil, so this engine gives Mercury 0.67 of 4. In Mercury's own Ashtakavarga (BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 51-52) the 8th place from a contributor is marked good by six of eight, second only to the 11th. The Shad Bala calculator and Ashtakavarga calculator show both.

Saravali Ch. 26, Mercury by sign, adds the sign layer: Gemini (Scorpio rising) an able speaker and poet, very affluent; Virgo (Aquarius rising) virtuous, eloquent, famous; Libra (Pisces rising) business in many directions; Leo (Capricorn rising) famous and wealthy, weak memory; Pisces (Leo rising) without learning in shastra; Scorpio (Aries rising) troubles, grief and debts. The sign readings make no reference to house.

Company matters for the yogas above and for Mercury's nature, and Saravali Ch. 15's Mercury pairs read each: with Jupiter (Sl. 17), a scholar, wise and happy; with Venus (Sl. 18), abundantly rich, good in speech; with the Moon (Sl. 9), skilled in poems, wealthy; with Mars (Sl. 13), an unlucky wife, little wealth, an architect; with Saturn (Sl. 19), an able poet, in debt, proud and deceiving; with the Sun, in service with unsteady wealth. The three malefic pairs are also the companions that remove Lagn Adhi Yog's condition and turn Mercury malefic by BPHS's rule.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading's planet row is favourable only when dignity is strong and the house is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. So a Mercury in the 8th always prints "reduced vitality under real affliction", even exalted for Aquarius rising. The consequence is plain: the app follows Saravali's general rule here, against Saravali's and the sutras' specific verses, and the favourable line, "longevity, land and a wide reputation", exists in the table but is never surfaced.

Here the app's row reads against both specific sources it was written from. The engine is consistent with its own rule; the rule is the general one. Reading your chart yourself, the sutras' question is the 8th lord's condition: debilitated and with malefics, or not. dashaQuality() rates a dasha lord in a dusthana challenging, after BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6.

Timing

Mercury has 17 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 66-70 give Mercury in Ari, Randhr or Vyaya an adverse dasha: loss of wealth through indulgence, danger of theft, malevolence of the government, loss of land and cattle, with complaints this page does not repeat. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 repeat that the dashas of planets placed in the 8th produce unfavourable effects, and Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 say the placement at the start of the dasha counts as well as at birth.

BPHS Ch. 58 reads several sub-periods in Mercury's dasha by the sub-lord's house counted "from the Lord of the Dasha", that is from Mercury. From a Mercury in the 8th house, planets in the 8th, 11th, 2nd and 5th houses are in angles from it, those in the 12th and 4th in trines, and a planet in the 6th is 11th from it; planets in the 1st, 3rd and 7th houses are 6th, 8th and 12th from it. A sub-lord in the Lagna therefore reads poorly from an 8th-house Mercury by that count.

For Scorpio and Aquarius rising the period is also the 8th lord's, for which BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give "the possibility of death and financial losses" and this app words, with the death wording removed on purpose, as "major transformation and financial caution - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha". Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make an 8th lord's dasha favourable when associated with a trine lord, which for Aquarius rising Mercury is itself. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Mercury Mahadasha page the sub-periods. For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, where the 8th is testing for every planet.

Here Mercury is itself the 8th lord, in its own sign, so the sutras' exception, an 8th lord debilitated and with malefics, cannot apply: the default reading of a good span, land and fame stands. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 92 gives the 8th lord in the 8th a long life, and the engine names Sarala. The Sun is in the 9th, 17.9 degrees away, so Mercury is not combust and is in the 12th sign from the Sun, the Vasi position.

Company splits. Jupiter beside Mercury is a benefic; Mars beside it, the Lagna and 6th lord here and the engine's Harsha planet, is a malefic, and by BPHS's rule Mercury with a malefic takes its nature, which also takes away Lagn Adhi Yog's malefic-free condition. The 2nd house, Sagittarius, holds no planet, so the Ch. 42 reversal has nothing to act on. Ch. 34 calls an 8th lord that also owns the 11th specifically harmful. The planet row reads testing and the dasha grade challenging. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Mercury is in the eighth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator, and note where the Sun is.
  2. Find the 8th lord: is it debilitated and with malefics? That is the only case the sutras read badly.
  3. Check the 2nd house: Mars and Saturn there are reversed by this Mercury's aspect, BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 16-18.
  4. Check Mercury's company for Lagn Adhi Yog: benefics in the 7th and 8th, free of malefics.
  5. If Mercury rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, read the engine's Vipareeta entry beside BPHS's Ch. 24 sloka.
  6. Read the app's testing row knowing it follows Saravali's general rule, not the specific verses.

How to weigh a yoga is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Mercury in the 8th is bad because the 8th is bad." Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras both read it well; only Saravali's general rule says otherwise.
  • "The app's testing line is the classical verdict." It follows the general rule; the specific verses it was written from are favourable.
  • "Mercury in the 8th means a long life." The texts say so as a classical reading; this app computes no lifespan.
  • "Mercury in the 8th protects wealth." Its aspect reverses one specific combination, Mars and Saturn together in the 2nd.
  • "Sarala Yoga is BPHS's rule." BPHS gives the 8th lord in the 8th a long life (Sl. 92) and the 12th lord in the 8th gains (Sl. 140); the general Vipareeta rule is later practice.
  • "Mercury in the 8th means occult interests." BPHS lists things past and to come; no verse ties Mercury here to occult study.

Questions about Mercury in the 8th

Is Mercury bad in the 8th house?
Not in the specific verses: Saravali gives fame, strength and long life; the Bhrigu Sutras give a good span, land and fame, and the commentator speaks of it very well. Saravali's general rule against benefics in the 8th points the other way, and the app follows that rule.
Why does the app show a testing line?
Its planet row needs a house outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The favourable line written for Mercury in the 8th exists but is never selected.
What does Mercury aspect from the 8th?
The 2nd house, by its 7th aspect. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 16-18 use exactly that aspect to reverse Mars and Saturn in the 2nd.
Does Mercury in the 8th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
For six rising signs this app names one: Harsha for Aries and Capricorn, Sarala for Scorpio and Aquarius, Vimala for Cancer and Libra.
What is Lagn Adhi Yoga?
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 37: benefics in the 7th and 8th from the Lagna, free of malefic conjunction and aspect. A Mercury in the 8th can be one of them, without malefic company.
When does the sutras' reading turn bad?
Only if the 8th lord is debilitated (in Pisces, the sutras say) and with malefics, by Sutras 57-63; a strong or exalted 8th lord assures the full span.
Does Mercury in the 8th say anything about lifespan?
The texts speak of a long life for it. This app computes no lifespan and makes no such statement.
Does Mercury in the 8th affect the 10th house?
By Argala, BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9: the 8th is the 11th from the 10th, so a planet there causes Argala on the 10th, the house BPHS makes Mercury the significator of.
Is a Mercury dasha difficult with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 66-70 and Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 read a Mercury in the 8th unfavourably, and the app grades it challenging.
