Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Mercury in the 9th house: Saravali's affluent scholar, the Bhrigu Sutras' long-lived father, BPHS Ch. 47 naming Dharm for a full Mercury dasha, Ch. 20 Sl. 28 on deep exaltation, Mercury as a lord in the 9th for each rising sign, the Raja Yogas it can join, and how this app grades it.

Mercury in the 9th house is one of the few placements where every source in this app's corpus reads the same way. Saravali calls the native very affluent, scholarly, eloquent, highly skilful and virtuous. The Bhrigu Sutras call him learned in the Vedas and Shastras, fond of music, patient, religious-minded, wealthy and fortunate, with many children and a long-lived father. The sutras' commentator calls the placement "very beneficial", and the book's Note says all its authorities agree. And BPHS, in the chapter on the dasha of each planet, names Dharm twice for Mercury: once among the houses that make its period good, and again among the conditions under which those results come "in full".

Agreement is not the same as a promise, and this page is mostly about the conditions the texts attach and the ones this app checks. It covers the verses, the house the planet is sitting in, what Mercury owns from each rising sign and what Parashara says about that lord in the 9th, the Raja Yogas Mercury can join here, timing, and one engine-computed chart. For the planet in general see Mercury in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 9th house, Dharma Bhava.

Sources, and the father

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The 9th is the father's house, and the texts speak of his fortune and length of life. This page reports those lines as what the texts say. This app makes no forecast about anyone's parent, and the verses on the father's death are left out.

The house: a trine that is also cadent

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 10 assigns Dharma Bhava fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines. Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 adds the father, judged from the 9th and from the 9th counted from the Sun. Saravali Ch. 32 calls it Bhagyasthana, the house of fortune, and begins by telling the reader to analyse it first, "leaving aside all the other Houses". The modern significations list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras (p. 15) widens the list to faith, philosophy, the preceptor, teaching, higher education and long journeys.

Several of those items are already Mercury's. Learning, teaching, the Shastras and the written word are among Mercury's significations in BPHS Ch. 3 and Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13. The 9th is the one house that is both a Kona (trine) and an Apoklima (cadent), by BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36. The trine status is the one that matters for reading a planet in it: Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 call the angles and trines auspicious houses, "the association with which turns even evil into auspiciousness", and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 rank the 9th above the 5th within the trines.

For a planet in it, the classification matters for one more reason. The 9th is not a Dusthana, so the general rule Saravali gives in Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87, that benefics prove adverse in the 6th, 8th and 12th, does not touch it. On the 8th and 12th house pages for Mercury the specific verses and the general rule pulled against each other. Here they point the same way, and the only questions left are dignity, company, aspect and what Mercury rules.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 46

The verse in full: the native will be very affluent, scholarly, of good conduct and habits, eloquent in speech, skilful of a great order and virtuous. No condition is stated. Every word in it except "affluent" is about the person rather than his circumstances, and the words chosen, scholarship and eloquence, are Mercury's own. The 9th supplies the virtue and the fortune; Mercury supplies the learning and the speech.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 64-66

The sutras (p. 70): many children; learned in the Vedas and Shastras, fond of music, very patient, religious-minded, full of glory, wealthy and fortunate; a long-lived father; well cultured, with an interest in meditation. The commentator calls the placement "very beneficial", lists the Lagnas for which it makes a Dhana yoga, and says that in its own sign it forms "a very powerful Raja yoga". The engine's two strings were written from the same sutras. The favourable one reads "deep learning, fortune and a long-lived father - classically one of Mercury's best placements, forming real Raja Yoga in its own sign". The other reads "reduced fortune under affliction".

Other Views (pp. 70-71). Brihat Jatak: children, wealth and happiness. Phaldeepika: very learned, religious-minded, wealthy, of good conduct. Chamatkar Chintamani: religious-minded and very wise, performing rites, bathing in the Ganges, bringing good repute to the family and destroying those who do sinful deeds. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

Saravali's two general rules for the 9th are the conditions the specific verse leaves out. Sl. 25 needs a strong benefic. Sl. 26 strips strength, wealth and fame from a debilitated, combust or malefic occupant that has no benefic aspect. Mercury meets both edges of that rule more often than most planets: it is combust often, it turns malefic in malefic company by BPHS's own definition, and it is debilitated in Pisces, which is the 9th sign for Cancer rising. The specific verse describes Mercury in the 9th; the general rules decide how much of it a given chart can claim.

Condensed from Saravali Ch. 30 (saravali.txt 4639-4971) and the Bhrigu Sutras' 9th-house sutras (pp. 27, 41, 57, 70, 82, 94, 105). Statements about the father are the texts', not forecasts.

The pattern is sharp. The three natural benefics, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, and the Moon, all read well in both sources. The Sun, Mars and Saturn read poorly, and the father suffers under two of them. Mercury's line and the Moon's ("highly learned") are the two built around learning as much as piety: Jupiter is pious, Venus religious minded; Mercury is learned in the Shastras, fond of music and religious-minded too. Of the planets whose sutra gives a long-lived father outright, Mercury and Jupiter are the two that need no stated dignity for it.

The dasha verse that names the 9th twice

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65 (see also the Mercury Mahadasha page) give the well-placed Mercury's period: wealth and reputation, improvement in knowledge, the benevolence of the government, auspicious functions, happiness from spouse and children, good health and profit in business. The condition is Mercury in exaltation, its own sign or a friendly sign, or in Labh (the 11th), Putr (the 5th) or Dharm (the 9th). So for this verse the 9th is enough by itself; dignity is an alternative, not a requirement.

The passage then names an upgrade. If Mercury receives a benefic's aspect, or is in Dharm, or is the lord of the 10th, the results are experienced in full, "with felicity all round". The 9th is the only house named in both lists. Of the three ways to the upgrade, it is also the only one that depends on placement alone: the benefic aspect depends on where Jupiter and Venus are, and the 10th lordship exists only for Virgo and Sagittarius rising. Read literally, Mercury in the 9th from any rising sign meets the condition for the full results of its dasha.

The same chapter has an afflicted case at Sl. 66-70, with two separate conditions: debilitation, combustion or malefic company on one side, and the 6th, 8th or 12th house on the other. A Mercury in the 9th can never meet the second. It can meet the first, and BPHS does not say how to net a Mercury that is both in Dharm and combust. This page does not net it either.

BPHS Ch. 20: fortune, Mercury and the 9th lord

Mercury is named once in the chapter that judges the 9th. Ch. 20 Sl. 27-28: abundant fortunes "after the 36th year" if Mercury is in deep exaltation while the 9th lord is in the 9th. Mercury's deep exaltation is 15 degrees of Virgo, and Virgo is the 9th sign only for Capricorn rising, where Mercury is itself the 9th lord. For that one Lagna, a Mercury near 15 degrees of Virgo in the 9th meets both halves of the verse with one planet. For every other rising sign, Mercury in deep exaltation is in some other house and the verse is about a different chart.

The rest of the chapter reads fortune through the 9th lord, Jupiter and the Lagna lord together, and closes by saying the effects "may be estimated with the help of the state of the Lords of Lagn and Dharm Bhava". Sl. 1, the simplest rule in it, makes one fortunate "if Dharm's Lord is in Dharm Bhava with strength". That is Mercury in the Libra and Capricorn charts. Sl. 12 and 31 give the poverty cases (begging for food): Sl. 12 needs weak 10th and 3rd lords with the 9th lord in fall or combust, Sl. 31 Saturn with the Moon in the 9th and the Lagna lord in fall.

Saravali Ch. 32: own country or elsewhere

Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 3-4 say that the house the 9th lord occupies and the planet occupying the 9th both have a say. Then the distinction: if the 9th is occupied or aspected by its own lord, fortune is made "in his own country"; if other planets aspect or occupy it, "the dawn of fortune will be elsewhere". By that verse a Mercury in the 9th points fortune at home for Libra and Capricorn rising, where it owns the house, and elsewhere for the other ten Lagnas. With the 9th lord also aspecting or occupying the 9th the verse gives both readings and does not rank them.

Sl. 2 adds the second count: the house of fortune may be read from the Lagna or from the Moon, and whichever is stronger "will come to pass". A Mercury in the 9th from the Lagna is in the 9th from the Moon only when the Moon is in the Lagna. Your Moon sign gives the second count. Sl. 29 reads an exalted planet in the 9th as an excellent person with wealth, raised further by a benefic's aspect, which is Mercury for Capricorn rising again.

What Mercury owns: the twelve rising signs

A planet in a house brings the houses it rules with it. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for the lord of every house placed in the 9th, and Mercury rules two signs, so two of those verses apply to each Mercury in the 9th. The table puts them beside the engine's natural dignity and Ch. 34's verdict on Mercury for that Lagna.

Three Lagnas stand out. For Gemini and Virgo rising Mercury is the Lagna lord, and Sl. 9 reads the Lagna lord in the 9th as fortunate, dear to people, a devotee of Vishnu, skilful and eloquent, with spouse, children and wealth. The word "eloquent" in that sloka is Mercury's own signification, so the lordship and the planet say the same thing. For Taurus rising Mercury carries the 5th lord into the 9th, and Sl. 57 reads that as a prince or equal to one and "an author of treatises", the most Mercurial line in the whole set. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

The harder rows come where Mercury rules the 8th or 12th. Sl. 93, the 8th lord in the 9th, is one of the harshest in the chapter, and it applies to Scorpio and Aquarius rising. Sl. 141, the 12th lord in the 9th, applies to Cancer and Libra rising. For Libra it is set against Sl. 105, Mercury as the 9th lord in its own house, and for Aquarius against Sl. 57. BPHS gives each sloka on its own; Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 say contrary results from two lordships nullify each other or come to pass in varied form. It does not say which wins when one planet carries both lordships, and the page does not choose for it.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 add the verdict on Mercury itself for each Lagna. It is auspicious for Libra and Capricorn, the two Lagnas where it owns the 9th; auspicious and forming a Yoga with Venus for Virgo; able to confer a Yoga with the Sun for Sagittarius; giving "meddling effects" for Aquarius; "somewhat inauspicious" for Taurus; and malefic for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio and Pisces. Ch. 34 Sl. 15 adds: a trine lord that also owns an evil house does not make a Raja Yoga by mere association. That is the qualification on Mercury as 9th lord for Libra (with the 12th) and Capricorn (with the 6th).

Dignity in a chart

The table's dignity column is the natural relation only. The engine's dignityOf is called with the chart, so it also applies the temporary relation, which depends on how far Mercury is from the lord of its sign. Run for every Lagna, the result for Mercury in the 9th is this. Exalted (Capricorn rising), own sign (Libra) and debilitated (Cancer) never change. Where the natural relation is neutral (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Pisces), the label becomes Friendly sign when the sign's lord is in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th house and Enemy sign when it is in the 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th.

Saravali Ch. 26, Mercury by sign, adds a separate layer that ignores house. The signs that fall in the 9th include several of its best Mercury readings: Sagittarius (Aries rising), famous, liberal, learned in Veda and Shastra, a minister or family priest, a teacher; Virgo (Capricorn rising), virtuous, eloquent, skilled in writing and the fine arts; Gemini (Libra rising), an able speaker and poet; Taurus (Virgo rising), skilful, knows the Vedas and Shastras. Its hardest are Pisces (Cancer rising), without learning in Shastra, and Scorpio (Pisces rising), troubles, grief and debts. The Sagittarius reading is worth noticing: Saravali gives Mercury in the sign of Dharma a priest's and teacher's line, while the engine labels it only Neutral.

Raja Yogas Mercury can join from the 9th

The engine flags Raja Yoga when the 5th and 9th lords occupy one house, and Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga when the 9th and 10th lords occupy one house that is an angle or trine. The 9th is a trine, so any 9th-10th meeting in it counts. Both read lordship, not nature, and the yogas calculator lists them. For Mercury in the 9th the cases are few and specific.

Three of the rows are exactly the pairings BPHS Ch. 34 names when it singles Mercury out. For Libra it names the Moon, for Virgo Venus, for Sagittarius the Sun. In each case the partner it names, meeting Mercury in the 9th, is what the engine's Dharma-Karmadhipati test needs. The Sagittarius row is the one that fits Mercury's astronomy best: Mercury and the Sun share a sign on about half of all days, so Mercury in Leo with the Sun is the most common of the seven. It is also the row most likely to have Mercury combust, which Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26 reads against.

The Capricorn row is the only Lagna for which one meeting gives both yogas: Venus rules the 5th and 10th there, so Venus with an exalted Mercury in Virgo is a 5th-9th and a 9th-10th link at once. Venus in Virgo is debilitated, which the engine's lordship test does not consider. The Taurus row has the opposite problem: Saturn rules the 9th and 10th for Taurus, and Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 say "Śani will cause Raj Yog" there. The engine also counts a single planet owning both as a Dharma-Karmadhipati pair, which is a separate issue from Mercury.

Beyond the engine, BPHS has combinations that use the house directly. Ch. 36 Sl. 25-26, Khadg Yog: the 2nd and 9th lords exchange signs while the Lagna lord is in an angle or trine. Mercury is the 2nd lord for Taurus and Leo, so a Mercury in the 9th exchanging with the 9th lord in the 2nd fits it for those two Lagnas. Ch. 41 Sl. 16: planets joined with the 9th or 5th lord "are capable of bestowing wealth" in their dasha periods. Ch. 39 Sl. 36-39 includes the 4th or 10th lord joining the 9th lord. Neither Khadg nor the Ch. 39 list is computed by this app.

Aspect, Argala and the Sun

From the 9th, aspectedHouses('mercury', 9) returns [3]: Mercury's only full aspect is the 7th, and the 7th from the 9th is the 3rd, the house of siblings, effort and communication. The 9th and the 3rd look at each other, which is why Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 5 counts a strong planet aspecting the 9th from the 3rd among the marks of great luck. The 3rd house page covers what that house signifies.

By Argala, BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9, a planet in the 2nd, 4th or 11th from a house causes Argala on it. The 9th is the 2nd from the 8th, the 4th from the 6th and the 11th from the 11th, so a Mercury in the 9th intervenes on all three of those houses. Ch. 31 Sl. 18 makes unobstructed Argala on the Lagna, 5th and 9th "a king and fortunate". The Argala calculator works it out for your chart.

Mercury is never more than one sign from the Sun, and the Sun's house follows the clock: the 10th around midday, the 7th around sunset. A Mercury in the 9th therefore belongs to a birth with the Sun in the 8th, 9th or 10th, from about midday into the afternoon. With the Sun in the 10th, Mercury is 12th from it and forms Vasi; with the Sun in the 8th, Mercury is 2nd from it and forms Vesi. With the Sun in the 9th as well, Mercury is often combust, and the 9th then holds the planet the Bhrigu Sutras read as "not much fortunate" and inimical to the father beside the one they read as giving him a long life. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 30-35 have a line for exactly this pair: Mercury and the Sun together in the 9th make one "skillful, miserable", with many enemies and many diseases, reported here as the text's, not as medical advice.

Company: Mercury takes on its neighbour

Mercury's company matters more than most planets' because its nature depends on it: BPHS treats Mercury as a benefic alone and a malefic with malefics (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11). In the 9th that matters twice, once for Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26 and once for Ch. 47's afflicted case. Saravali Ch. 15's Mercury pairs read each companion: with Jupiter (Sl. 17), a scholar, wise and happy; with Venus (Sl. 18), abundantly rich, good in speech; with the Moon (Sl. 9), skilled in poems, wealthy; with Mars (Sl. 13), little wealth, an architect; with Saturn (Sl. 19), an able poet, in debt, proud and deceiving; with the Sun (Sl. 4), in service with unsteady wealth.

Jupiter beside Mercury in the 9th puts the house's fixed significator in it too. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 6-24 read Jupiter in the 9th aspected by Mercury as affluence, but that is aspect, not conjunction, and Sl. 23 limits those readings to cases where no other planet aspects. For Jupiter's own reading here see Jupiter in the 9th house. For the transit side, the engine's Gochar rules class Mercury crossing the 9th from the natal Moon as favourable.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading's planet row is favourable when Mercury is exalted, in its Moolatrikona, in its own sign or in a friendly sign, and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 9th is never a Dusthana, so dignity alone decides it. For Capricorn and Libra rising the row is always favourable; for Cancer rising it is always "reduced fortune under affliction"; for the rest it turns on the temporary relation described above.

That grading is stricter than the sources in one direction. Saravali's and the sutras' verses state no condition, and Ch. 47 names Dharm by itself. A Mercury in the 9th labelled Neutral, for Aries rising in Sagittarius, gets the testing string even though Saravali Ch. 26 gives Mercury in Sagittarius one of its best sign readings. The grade follows the engine's rule and is consistent with it. It is not a verdict from the specific verses.

dashaQuality() rates the Mercury dasha good when Mercury is exalted, in Moolatrikona or in its own sign, challenging when it is debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a Dusthana, and neutral otherwise. It does not test Ch. 47's "in Dharm" clause. Directional strength in this engine is full in the 1st and nil in the 7th, and from the 9th Mercury scores 1.33 of 4. The Shad Bala calculator shows the full breakdown.

Timing

Mercury has 17 Vimshottari years. Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65, above, make the 9th one of the placements for a good Mercury dasha and one of the three ways to its full results. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give the 9th lord's dasha "improvement in the educational sphere, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains of wealth", which the engine carries as "growth in education, spirituality and unexpected gains". For Libra and Capricorn rising the Mercury dasha is that 9th lord's period. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.

Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 say the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord "also becomes favourable" when it is associated with the lord of a trine. Mercury rules a Dusthana and the 9th together for Libra (12th) and Capricorn (6th), and it is its own trine lord in both, which is the most literal reading of the clause. For Scorpio and Aquarius, where it owns the 8th, the trine-lord association needs a partner.

BPHS Ch. 58 reads several sub-periods in Mercury's dasha by the sub-lord's house counted "from the Lord of the Dasha", that is from Mercury. From a Mercury in the 9th house, planets in the 9th, 12th, 3rd and 6th houses are in angles from it; planets in the 1st and 5th are in trines from it; a planet in the 7th is 11th from it. Planets in the 2nd, 4th and 8th houses are 6th, 8th and 12th from it. So a sub-lord in the Lagna reads well from a 9th-house Mercury by that count, which is the reverse of the 8th-house case.

Here BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 1 is met in its simplest form: the 9th lord in the 9th, in its own sign. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4 reads the house occupied by its own lord as fortune in the native's own country, but Jupiter occupies it too, which by the same verse points elsewhere. Ch. 24 Sl. 105 gives abundant fortunes; Sl. 141, for the 12th lordship Mercury also carries, reads the other way. The Sun is in the 8th, 22 degrees behind, so Mercury is not combust and is 2nd from the Sun, the Vesi position.

Jupiter beside Mercury is Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 17's scholar pair, and it is a benefic, so Mercury keeps its benefic nature. Jupiter here rules the 3rd and 6th for Libra rising, which BPHS Ch. 34 calls malefic for this Lagna. The engine does not flag the 5th-9th Raja Yoga because Saturn, the 5th lord, is in the Lagna, and it does not flag Dharma-Karmadhipati because the Moon, the 10th lord, is in the 6th. The Kendra-Kona entry is for Venus and Saturn. The birth falls at the start of Mercury's own dasha, which Ch. 47 would read as the 9th-house case. The page lists these and does not net them.

  5. If you are Libra, Capricorn, Virgo or Sagittarius rising, check the partner in the yoga table.
  6. Read the app's planet row knowing it follows dignity, while Ch. 47 names the 9th by itself.

Over-readings

  • "Mercury in the 9th guarantees fortune." The verses read it well; Saravali's own general rules withdraw it for a combust, debilitated or malefic-joined occupant without benefic aspect.
  • "Mercury in the 9th means a long-lived father." That is the sutras' line, reported as theirs. This app makes no statement about anyone's parent.
  • "Fortune after 36." Ch. 20 Sl. 28 needs Mercury in deep exaltation with the 9th lord in the 9th, which only Capricorn rising can meet with Mercury in the 9th; the age is the text's, not a prediction.
  • "Mercury in the 9th always gives Raja Yoga." The engine flags one only with a specific partner for seven Lagnas; the favourable string's Raja Yoga wording refers to its own sign.
  • "The app's testing line means the classical verdict is bad." It follows dignity; the specific verses state no condition.
  • "Mercury in the 9th means religious devotion." Its sources read it mainly as learning and eloquence, though the sutras, Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani also call it religious-minded.
