The 9th house is called Dharma Bhava. The classical texts also call it Bhagya Sthana, the place of fortune, and they treat it as the most helpful house in a chart: Saravali opens its chapter on it by saying that it should be analysed before any other house. It carries four things at once: fortune, the father, religion and teachers. This page sets out what the texts say about it, chapter by chapter, and how this app computes it. To follow along, open the birth chart calculator and find the ninth sign counted from your Ascendant.
How to read this page
The verses were written for a king's court and for male readers, so "fortune" often appears as "will become a king" and the reader's father is discussed more than the reader. This page reports them in the text's words and reads the royal language as a statement about standing and support, not about thrones. A long run of verses in the main 9th-house chapter gives ages at which a father dies; they are named below and not reproduced, and this app computes none of them. Nothing here is a forecast about your family, and nothing here is medical advice.
What Dharma Bhava signifies
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) gives the list in one line. Ch. 11 Sl. 10: "Fortunes, wife's brother, religion, brother's wife, visits to shrines etc. be known from Dharm Bhava." Two of the five items are in-laws, which later practice mostly ignores. The other three, fortune, religion and pilgrimage, are the core of every later description.
The father is missing from that verse, but not from the book. Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 says: "Dharm Bhava and the 9th from Surya deal with one's father." The Arudha of the 9th is named Pitru Pad, the father's Pada, in Ch. 29. And almost all of Ch. 20, the chapter that judges this house, is about the father. BPHS is not fully consistent here: Ch. 11 Sl. 11 lists "father" among the indications of the 10th house as well. The two houses share him in this text, and a careful reading looks at both.
Saravali has a whole chapter (Ch. 32) for this house and calls it Bhagyasthana throughout. The modern commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras gives the widest list: faith, wisdom and worship, fortune, philosophy, places of worship, charity, the father, the preceptor (Guru), teaching, grandchildren, dreams, long journeys and foreign travel, and higher education.

How the texts classify the 9th house
- Kona (trine). BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36: "Putr and Dharm Bhava are known by the name Kon (or trine)." That is the 5th and the 9th. This app's engine also counts the 1st as a trine (its TRIKONA list is 1, 5, 9), following Ch. 34, where the Lagna is "a Kendr, as well as a Kon".
- Apoklima (cadent). The same verse puts the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th in the cadent group. The 9th is the one house that is both cadent and a trine.
- It is not an angle, not a Dusthana (6th, 8th, 12th) and not an Upachaya (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th).
The trine status is what matters. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says plainly: "The Lord of a Kon will give auspicious results." It adds that the 5th and 9th "are specially for wealth", and that within each group the significance rises in order, which puts the 9th above the 5th. Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 goes further: the angles and trines are auspicious houses, "the association with which turns even evil into auspiciousness". Ch. 41 Sl. 28 gives the image that later tradition kept: the angles are Vishnu Sthanas and the trines are Lakshmi Sthanas, and a link between the lord of one and the lord of the other makes a Raj Yog.
The 9th also explains the reputation of the house before it. Ch. 34 says the lord of the 8th house "is not auspicious, as he owns the 12th from Dharm Bhava". The 8th is read as the house of loss counted from the house of fortune. In the same way the 10th is the 2nd from the 9th, which is one reason the texts tie the 10th house so closely to it.
Jupiter is the fixed significator. Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 lists the Bhava Karakas in house order, and Guru holds the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th. A 9th-house reading therefore has three legs: the house, its lord, and Jupiter. For the father the Sun is added, since Ch. 7 asks you to count the 9th from the Sun too.
BPHS Chapter 20: the judgement of Dharma Bhava
Ch. 20 has 32 verses. Read as a whole it has three subjects: the reader's fortune, the father's condition, and the ages at which fortune arrives. Nearly every verse joins two or three conditions with "while" or "as", so none of them is a single-factor rule.
Fortune
- Sl. 1: one is fortunate "if Dharm's Lord is in Dharm Bhava with strength". The simplest rule in the chapter: the 9th lord in its own house, strong.
- Sl. 2: with Jupiter in the 9th, the 9th lord in an angle and a strong Lagna lord, one is "extremely fortunate".
- Sl. 26: abundant fortune if Venus is in deep exaltation with the 9th lord while Saturn is in the 3rd.
- Sl. 29: gains of wealth and conveyances if the Lagna lord is in the 9th, the 9th lord in the Lagna, and Jupiter in the 7th.
- Sl. 30: one is "devoid of fortunes" if Rahu is in the 9th from the 9th, his dispositor in the 8th, and the 9th lord in fall.
- Sl. 12 and 31: two combinations for extreme poverty, both needing three failures at once. In Sl. 12 the 10th and 3rd lords are without strength and the 9th lord is in fall or combust. In Sl. 31 Saturn sits in the 9th with the Moon while the Lagna lord is in fall.
Notice what the good verses share: the 9th lord strong, Jupiter involved, and the Lagna lord strong. The chapter's last verse says the same thing directly. These effects "may be estimated with the help of the state of the Lords of Lagn and Dharm Bhava". Fortune in this chapter is never read from the 9th alone. It needs a person (the Lagna lord) able to receive it.
The father
- Sl. 3: a fortunate father if the 9th lord is strong, Venus is in the 9th, and Jupiter is in an angle from the Lagna.
- Sl. 4: a poor father if the 9th lord is debilitated while Mars occupies the 2nd or 4th from the 9th.
- Sl. 5: a long-lived father if the 9th lord is in deep exaltation, Venus is in an angle, and Jupiter is in the 9th from the Navamsa Lagna.
- Sl. 6: a father of royal standing if the 9th lord is in an angle and receives Jupiter's aspect.
- Sl. 7: a rich and famous father if the 9th lord is in the 10th while the 10th lord receives a benefic's aspect.
- Sl. 8-9: devotion to the father if the Sun is in deep exaltation with the 9th lord in the 11th, or if the Sun is in a trine from the Lagna while the 9th lord is in the 7th, joined or aspected by Jupiter.
- Sl. 11: enmity between father and child if the Lagna lord is in the 9th together with the 6th lord.
Sl. 5 is worth a second look because it reaches into a divisional chart: Jupiter must be in the 9th counted from the Navamsa Lagna. You can see that chart with the Navamsa (D9) calculator. Sl. 13-25 then list thirteen combinations for the father's death, each with ages attached. They are part of the text and we say so, but we do not reproduce them. Each depends on three or four placements at once, the ages are not something a chart can responsibly promise, and this app does not compute them.
Ages named in the chapter
| Verse | Combination | What the text says |
|---|---|---|
| Sl. 10 | 9th lord in the 2nd and 2nd lord in the 9th | Fortune, conveyances and fame "will follow the 32nd year" |
| Sl. 27 | Jupiter in the 9th, 9th lord in an angle from the Lagna | Abundant fortunes "after the 20th year" |
| Sl. 28 | Mercury in deep exaltation, 9th lord in the 9th | Abundant fortunes "after the 36th year" |
Sl. 10 is the same exchange that Ch. 36 Sl. 25-26 calls Khadg Yog when the Lagna lord is also in an angle or trine. The text does not explain how these ages were derived, and this app does not use them.
Saravali Chapter 32: the house of fortune
Kalyana Varma gives the 9th its own chapter, and the first five verses are a method.
- Sl. 1: analyse the house of fortune first, "leaving aside all the other Houses", because without fortune the other good results do not arrive.
- Sl. 2: the Bhagyasthana is the 9th from the Ascendant or from the Moon, and the results of whichever of the two is stronger "will come to pass". So Saravali wants two counts, one from the Lagna and one from your Moon sign.
- Sl. 3: the house occupied by the 9th lord and the planet occupying the 9th both have a say. Their strength or weakness shows the fortune.
- Sl. 4: if the 9th is occupied or aspected by its own lord, fortune is made "in his own country". If other planets aspect or occupy it, "the dawn of fortune will be elsewhere".
- Sl. 5: one is extremely lucky if a strong planet gives its full aspect to the 9th from the 3rd, the 5th or the Ascendant.
Most of the rest of the chapter (Sl. 6-24) is about one placement, Jupiter in the 9th, and how each aspecting planet colours it. Alone, Jupiter there makes "a minister". Aspected by the Sun, "equal to a king". By Mars, gold. By Mercury, affluence. By Venus, conveyances and wealth. By Saturn, immovable property. The two-planet aspects are not all flattering: Jupiter in the 9th aspected by both Mars and Saturn gives a spiteful person living abroad. Sl. 23 limits the whole list: these readings hold "only when no other planets" aspect.
Four general rules close the section, and they are the most reusable lines in the chapter.
- Sl. 25: a strong benefic in the 9th gives standing, wealth, righteousness and increased longevity.
- Sl. 26: a debilitated planet, a combust planet or a malefic in the 9th, with no benefic aspect, leaves the person without strength, wealth and fame.
- Sl. 27: "If the malefic in the 9th is the owner of that House, then it proves auspicious", and more so with a benefic's aspect. Ownership overrides natural malefic status.
- Sl. 29: a planet exalted in the 9th gives an excellent person with wealth, raised further by a benefic's aspect.
Which planet rules your 9th house
This app uses whole-sign houses counted from the Ascendant, so your 9th house is one whole sign and its lord is that sign's ruler. The table is arithmetic from the standard sign lordships. Find your rising sign with the Lagna calculator. The last column is what BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-42 says about that planet for that rising sign.
| Ascendant | 9th sign | 9th lord | BPHS Ch. 34 on that planet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sagittarius | Jupiter | Auspicious (also rules the 12th) |
| Taurus | Capricorn | Saturn | Auspicious; "Sani will cause Raj Yog" (also rules the 10th) |
| Gemini | Aquarius | Saturn | Not listed as auspicious (also rules the 8th) |
| Cancer | Pisces | Jupiter | Auspicious (also rules the 6th) |
| Leo | Aries | Mars | Auspicious (also rules the 4th) |
| Virgo | Taurus | Venus | Auspicious, and "a killer as well" (also rules the 2nd) |
| Libra | Gemini | Mercury | Auspicious (also rules the 12th) |
| Scorpio | Cancer | Moon | Auspicious; named a Yog Karak with the Sun |
| Sagittarius | Leo | Sun | Auspicious; can confer a Yog with Mercury |
| Capricorn | Virgo | Mercury | Auspicious (also rules the 6th) |
| Aquarius | Libra | Venus | Auspicious; "the only Grah, that causes Raj Yog" (also rules the 4th) |
| Pisces | Scorpio | Mars | Auspicious; can cause a Yog with Jupiter (also rules the 2nd) |
For eleven of the twelve rising signs the 9th lord is on Parashara's auspicious list, whatever its natural character. Mars, Saturn and the Sun are natural malefics by Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, and each is called auspicious where it rules the 9th. Gemini is the exception: the verse names Venus as "the only auspicious Grah", and Saturn there also owns the 8th. Ch. 34 Sl. 15 gives the general principle. A trine lord that also owns an evil house does not make a Raj Yog by mere association. So the second house your 9th lord rules always matters. This app shows the same Ch. 34 lists for your own Ascendant in the Kundali reading.
The 9th lord in each of the twelve houses
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 97-108 gives a verse for the 9th lord in every house. Nine of the twelve are plainly good, which is unusual: for most house lords the chapter is far more mixed.
| 9th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | What the verse says |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 97 | Fortunate, honoured by the king and the public, virtuous, charming, learned |
| 2nd | Sl. 98 | A scholar, dear to all, wealthy, happy through spouse and children |
| 3rd | Sl. 99 | Happiness from siblings, wealthy, virtuous, charming |
| 4th | Sl. 100 | Houses, conveyances and happiness, all kinds of wealth, devoted to the mother |
| 5th | Sl. 101 | Children and prosperity, devoted to elders, bold, charitable, learned |
| 6th | Sl. 102 | Meagre prosperity, no happiness from maternal relatives, troubled by enemies |
| 7th | Sl. 103 | Happiness after marriage, virtuous and famous |
| 8th | Sl. 104 | Not prosperous, no happiness from the elder brother |
| 9th | Sl. 105 | Abundant fortunes, virtues and beauty, much happiness from siblings |
| 10th | Sl. 106 | A king or equal to one, a minister or army chief, virtuous, dear to all |
| 11th | Sl. 107 | Financial gains "day by day", devoted to elders, meritorious in acts |
| 12th | Sl. 108 | Loss of fortunes, spending on auspicious acts, poor "on account of entertaining guests" |
The three weak placements are the three Dusthanas, and the pattern is exact: the house of fortune's lord loses most in the 6th, 8th and 12th. Even there the 12th is gentle. The money goes on good causes and hospitality. Ch. 42 Sl. 7, in the chapter on penury, uses the same idea in a harder form: the 5th and 9th lords in the 6th and 12th, aspected by Maraka planets. The strongest placement is the 10th, where the lord of dharma sits in the house of action. For the mirror image, the lord of each other house placed in the 9th, see the next section and the pages on the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 7th houses.
Ch. 41 Sl. 23-27 adds a second scale for the 9th lord, based on how many of its divisional charts fall in good dignity. The results are all religious: visiting holy places at the lowest grade, then performing sacrificial rites, then truthfulness and mastery of the senses, then asceticism, and at the highest grade "a synonym of Dharma". This is the clearest evidence in BPHS that the 9th lord carries religion as well as money. This app does not compute those named grades for the 9th lord.
Other house lords placed in the 9th
| Lord of | BPHS Ch. 24 | Placed in the 9th |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 9 | Fortunate, dear to people, a devotee of Vishnu, skilful, eloquent, with spouse, children and wealth |
| 2nd | Sl. 21 | Wealthy, diligent, skilful, sick in childhood and happy later, visits shrines |
| 3rd | Sl. 33 | Lacks happiness from the father, makes fortune through the spouse |
| 4th | Sl. 45 | Dear to all, devoted to God, virtuous, honourable, every kind of happiness |
| 5th | Sl. 57 | A prince or equal to one, an author of treatises, famous |
| 6th | Sl. 69 | Trades in wood and stones, fluctuating professional fortunes |
| 7th | Sl. 81 | Many relationships, well disposed to the spouse, many undertakings |
| 8th | Sl. 93 | Betrays his religion, heterodox, takes others' wealth |
| 10th | Sl. 117 | Becomes a king if of royal birth, otherwise equal to one; wealth and happiness from children |
| 11th | Sl. 129 | Fortunate, skilful, truthful, honoured by the king, affluent |
| 12th | Sl. 141 | Dishonours elders, hostile even to friends, intent on his own ends |
Planets in the 9th house
Three sources give a reading for each planet here: Saravali Ch. 30, the Bhrigu Sutras, and this app's own strings, which were written from a full read of the Bhrigu Sutras. They do not always agree, and the table keeps them apart.
| Planet | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 10: wealth, children and friends, devoted to worship, but not well disposed to father and spouse | Sutras 83-87: religious but "not much fortunate" and inimical to the father; very favourable if exalted or in own sign |
| Moon | Sl. 22: devoted to divine and paternal duties, happiness, wealth, intelligence, children | Sutras 47-53: highly learned and charitable; if full, very fortunate with a long-lived father |
| Mars | Sl. 34: unskilful, harsh, not virtuous, yet honoured by the king | Sutras 72-74: early loss of the father and little prosperity |
| Mercury | Sl. 46: very affluent, scholarly, of good conduct, eloquent, virtuous | Sutras 64-66: learned in the Shastras, fond of music, patient, wealthy and fortunate, long-lived father |
| Jupiter | Sl. 58: attached to divine and paternal duties, learned, fortunate, a minister or leader | Sutras 44-45: religious and charitable deeds, pious and wealthy, long-lived father, protects many |
| Venus | Sl. 70: wealth, charity, spouse and friendship; honours gods, guests and elders | Sutras 49-58: religious minded, every comfort, children, long-lived father; reversed if with a malefic or debilitated |
| Saturn | Sl. 82: devoid of religious merit, little wealth, no happiness from siblings and children | Sutras 41-43: "sinful", yet repairs religious buildings; a long-lived father if in own sign or exalted |
| Rahu or Ketu | Not covered in Ch. 30 | Sutra 24: childless, dependent on others, irreligious |
Three disagreements are worth noticing. On the Sun, the Bhrigu Sutras commentator quotes Brihat Jataka as giving children, wealth and happiness and Chamatkar Chintamani as harsh, and prefers the sutras because they separate a strong Sun from a weak one. On Mars, the commentator lists five rising signs (Aries or Scorpio, Sagittarius, Cancer, Leo and Pisces) for which Mars in the 9th rules good houses and should not be read as unfortunate, and notes that Chamatkar Chintamani gives Mars beneficial results here. On the nodes, the "Other Views" printed with Sutra 24 quote Phaldeepika as harsh and Chamatkar Chintamani as calling Rahu here "full of good qualities". The sources are not unanimous, and we do not pretend they are.
This app does not take the plain sutra as final either. Its engine, buildPlanetHouseEffects in kundaliEngine.js, picks between two strings for each planet in each house. A planet gets the favourable string only if it is exalted, in its Moolatrikona, in its own sign or in a friendly sign, and not in a Dusthana. Since the 9th is never a Dusthana, dignity alone decides it here. For Saturn the favourable string reads "hard-won fortune and a long-lived father", and the other reads "a strained relationship with father or reduced fortune under affliction". Each planet has its own page: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in the 9th.
The 9th house and Raja Yoga
Most of what the tradition calls Raja Yoga runs through this house. The base rule is BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12: an exchange between the lord of an angle and the lord of a trine, their conjunction in an angle or trine, one placed in the other's kind of house, or a full mutual aspect, "cause a Yog". Sl. 13 adds that one planet ruling both an angle and a trine is "specially a Yog Karak". For what such a label can and cannot tell you, read what a yoga in your chart means.
BPHS names several combinations that use the 9th directly.
- Khadg Yog (Ch. 36 Sl. 25-26): the 2nd and 9th lords exchange signs while the Lagna lord is in an angle or trine. Result: wealth, fortune, learning in the Shastras, gratitude and skill.
- Lakshmi Yog (Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28): the 9th lord in an angle that is also its Moolatrikona, own or exaltation sign, with a strong Lagna lord.
- Ch. 39 Sl. 36-39: the 5th, 10th, 4th and Lagna lords together in the 9th; the 4th or 10th lord joining the 5th or 9th lord; the 5th lord in the 1st, 4th or 10th with the 9th lord or Lagna lord; Jupiter in his own sign in the 9th with Venus or the 5th lord.
- Ch. 40 Sl. 5, 10 and 11: the Atma Karaka in the 9th, or the Arudha of the 9th falling on the birth Lagna, brings association with "royal circles".
- Ch. 31 Sl. 18: unobstructed Argala on the Lagna, the 5th and the 9th makes one "a king and fortunate".
- Ch. 41 Sl. 16: the 9th and 5th lords, and planets joined with them, "are capable of bestowing wealth" in their Dasha periods.
This app's yoga calculator detects four of these families, and it is worth knowing exactly how. Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga is flagged when the 9th and 10th lords occupy the same house and that house is an angle or trine. Raja Yoga is flagged when the 5th and 9th lords occupy the same house. Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) is flagged when any angle lord and any trine lord are in one house or in full mutual aspect, reported once per chart. Argala Raj Yoga follows Ch. 31 Sl. 18 and can be checked on the Argala calculator. The app does not flag Khadg or Lakshmi Yog by name, and it does not attempt the full Ch. 39 list, which holds more than thirty competing rules, many needing sub-systems the engine does not build. The Arudha of the 9th (Pitru Pada) is shown by the Bhava Padas calculator, and the Atma Karaka and Pitru Karaka by the Char Karakas calculator.
Timing: when the 9th house becomes active
The main timing statement is BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8, which gives one line for the Dasha of each house lord. For the lord of the 9th: "improvement in the educational sphere, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains of wealth". This app's engine carries that verse as the theme "growth in education, spirituality and unexpected gains" and shows it when your running Mahadasha lord rules your 9th. If you are new to the system, start with what a Mahadasha is and find your current period with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator.
The same chapter qualifies the line at once. A planet in a trine or other good house at the start of its Dasha gives favourable results, and one in the 6th, 8th or 12th "yields only adverse results". The engine's dashaQuality function applies a version of this: a Dasha lord that is debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a Dusthana is marked challenging, one that is exalted, in Moolatrikona or in its own sign is marked good, and anything else neutral. So a 9th lord's Dasha with that lord in the 8th is not read as a fortunate period on the strength of lordship alone.
- Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17: if the 9th lord is in the Lagna and the Lagna lord is in the 9th, "the Dashas of both of them will produce extremely beneficial results".
- The same verses: the Dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord "also becomes favourable" if it is associated with the lord of a trine. The 9th lord can lift a difficult planet's period.
- Ch. 41 Sl. 16: planets joined with the 9th or 5th lord give wealth "during their Dasha periods".
- Ch. 47, on the Dasha of each planet, repeatedly lists the 9th among the placements that make a period favourable, and the later Antardasha chapters repeat the clause "associated with the Lord of Dharm" as a condition for good sub-periods.
Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, this app's Gochar calculator counts houses from the natal Moon, not the Ascendant. In its rules, Jupiter, Mercury or Venus crossing the 9th from your Moon is classed favourable, while Saturn there is classed as an unremarkable position. That is a statement about the 9th sign from the Moon, which is also the count Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 2 allows for the house of fortune. The timing feature puts Dasha and transit side by side.
How to read the 9th house in your own chart
- Confirm the birth time. The 9th house is counted from the Ascendant, and the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours. If your time is uncertain, read what to do when the birth time is unknown first; the 9th counted from the Moon still stands.
- Note the 9th sign and its lord from the table above, and the other house that lord rules.
- Find where the 9th lord sits and read the matching verse of BPHS Ch. 24. Then check its dignity: Ch. 20 keeps asking whether the lord is strong, exalted, debilitated or combust.
- List any planets in the 9th and apply Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 25-29: a strong benefic helps, a debilitated or combust planet or an unaspected malefic hurts, and the house's own lord is good there even if it is a natural malefic.
- Look at Jupiter, the Bhava Karaka, and for the father the Sun and the 9th from the Sun. The Shad Bala calculator gives a measured strength for each.
- Check the Lagna lord. Ch. 20 Sl. 32 says the house is to be judged from "the Lords of Lagn and Dharm Bhava" together.
- See whether the 9th lord is linked with the 10th lord, the 5th lord or any angle lord, which is where the Raja Yogas come from.
- Then check the calendar: is the 9th lord running a Mahadasha or Antardasha, and where is Jupiter from your Moon? The full Kundali reading gathers these in one place, and the AI chat can walk through them with your own placements.
What the app does and does not compute
Planetary positions here are computed with the method described on the methodology page, and the texts used are listed on the sources page. The app computes houses, lords, dignity, the yogas named above, Dashas and Moon-based transits. It does not compute the father's longevity, the ages in Ch. 20, or the divisional-dignity grades of Ch. 41.
Common misreadings
- "A planet in the 9th means luck." Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26 says a debilitated, combust or malefic planet there without a benefic aspect removes strength, wealth and fame. The house being good does not make every occupant good.
- "A malefic in the 9th ruins fortune." Sl. 27 of the same chapter says a malefic that owns the 9th "proves auspicious" there, and BPHS Ch. 34 calls Mars, Saturn and the Sun auspicious for the rising signs where they rule it.
- "The 9th lord is always a benefic influence." For Gemini rising BPHS does not list Saturn as auspicious, and Ch. 34 Sl. 15 denies a Raj Yog to a trine lord that also owns an evil house. Ch. 24 gives poor results for the 9th lord in the 6th, 8th and 12th.
- "The father verses predict dates." Each Ch. 20 verse needs three or more placements at once, and the text itself ends by telling the astrologer to weigh the Lagna and 9th lords "and in other manners as well". They are conditional patterns, not a timetable.
- "Fortune means money falling from the sky." The good verses in Ch. 20 all require a strong Lagna lord, and Ch. 48 words the 9th lord's Dasha as education, religious-mindedness and gains. The texts describe support and merit, which still need a person to act.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the 9th house called the most auspicious house?
- It is a Kona, or trine. BPHS Ch. 34 says the lord of a trine gives auspicious results and that the effect rises in order within the group, placing the 9th above the 5th. Ch. 41 calls the trines Lakshmi Sthanas, and Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 1 says to analyse this house before all others.
- Who is the lord of my 9th house?
- It is the ruler of the ninth sign from your Ascendant: Jupiter for Aries and Cancer rising, Saturn for Taurus and Gemini, Mars for Leo and Pisces, Venus for Virgo and Aquarius, Mercury for Libra and Capricorn, the Moon for Scorpio and the Sun for Sagittarius. The birth chart calculator shows your rising sign.
- What if my 9th house is empty?
- Nothing is wrong. Most houses in any chart are empty, since there are nine grahas and twelve houses. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 3 says both the planet in the 9th and the house occupied by the 9th lord have a say, so with no occupant you read the lord, its dignity and its house, then Jupiter as significator.
- What happens in the Dasha of the 9th lord?
- BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 gives "improvement in the educational sphere, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains of wealth". The same chapter says a Dasha lord placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th gives adverse results, so the lord's own placement and dignity decide how much of that theme shows.
- Is Saturn in the 9th house bad?
- Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 82 is negative: little religious merit and little wealth. The Bhrigu Sutras are mixed, and say the father is long-lived if Saturn is in its own sign or exalted. For Taurus and Gemini rising Saturn owns the 9th, and Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27 says a malefic owning the 9th is auspicious there. This app reads it by dignity.
- What is Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga?
- It is the link between the lords of the 9th (dharma) and 10th (karma), a case of the angle-trine rule in BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12. This app flags it when the two lords occupy the same house and that house is an angle or a trine. For Taurus rising one planet, Saturn, rules both houses, and BPHS says it "will cause Raj Yog".
- Does the 9th house show foreign travel?
- BPHS Ch. 11 gives "visits to shrines", meaning pilgrimage, and lists living in foreign lands under the 10th house. Long journeys and foreign travel for the 9th come from the modern commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4 adds that when planets other than its lord occupy or aspect the 9th, fortune dawns "elsewhere".
