What the classical texts say about Ketu in the 9th house, read from the books: the shared Bhrigu sutra, Phaldeepika's and Chamatkar Chintamani's Ketu lines, BPHS's Dasha and sub-period rules for a trine-placed Ketu, the modern rule that Jupiter's aspect removes a 9th-house Ketu's blemishes, and a worked chart whose Ketu Mahadasha is running now.

The 9th house is Dharma Bhava, the house of fortune, the father, religion and teachers, and the second of the two trines. Here the sources split along a familiar line. The shared Bhrigu sutra and Phaldeepika read a node in the 9th harshly; Chamatkar Chintamani gives Ketu a specific and mixed reading; BPHS's Dasha chapter puts a trine-placed Ketu in its good group; the rules that favour nodes in trines apply; and a modern casebook names one planet whose aspect changes the picture. The worked chart below has that aspect, and its Ketu Mahadasha is running as this page is written.

This page describes rules, not a person. See also Ketu in Vedic astrology, the 9th house, Dharma Bhava and Rahu in the 3rd house; the Birth Chart calculator shows your Ketu's house.

A note on sources

Every classical line here was read in the source texts: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) in its English translation, the Bhrigu Sutras with the "Other Views" and commentary printed in it, Saravali, and two modern books, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (2000) and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (1994). Phaldeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Uttara Kalamrita are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them; they are not available to us directly. Ketu is the thinner node in these sources: the Bhrigu Sutras give both nodes one shared set of sutras, Saravali has no node-in-house verses, and the only house lines written for Ketu alone are Phaldeepika's and Chamatkar Chintamani's.

The 9th house in brief

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 10 reads: "Fortunes, wife's brother, religion, brother's wife, visits to shrines etc. be known from Dharm Bhava." The father is not in that verse but is in the book: Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 say the 9th and the 9th from the Sun deal with the father, and Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 repeat it. Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Jupiter the fixed significator of the 9th, and Sl. 35-37 call the Kendras and Konas auspicious houses, association with which "turns even evil into auspiciousness". Saravali gives the house its own chapter (Ch. 32), which opens by saying it should be analysed before any other, since nothing good comes without fortune, and counts it from the stronger of the Lagna and the Moon.

Saravali's Sl. 3-4 add two general rules for any occupant. The house held by the 9th lord and the planet in the 9th "will have a say" on fortune; and if the 9th is occupied or aspected by its own lord, fortune is made in one's own country, while if others join it, "the dawn of fortune will be elsewhere". Saravali never names Ketu, there or in its chapter on planets in houses (Ch. 30), which has no verse for either node. Reading the second rule as a Ketu rule would be filling a gap the book leaves open.

What the texts say about Ketu in the 9th

Read directly in bhrigu-sutras.txt (Part II Ch. 8) and saravali.txt. Short phrases quoted; the rest paraphrased.

The Bhrigu Sutras' translator says why the sutra is shared: the author "has given the same effects of both Rahu and Ketu" in each house, presumably because they always stand seventh to each other, while "the other authorities" separate them. So Sutra 24 is the same text on the Rahu in the 9th page, and only the two "Other Views" are Ketu's own. An earlier version of this page shortened both of them. Phaldeepika's line is not just "unfortunate and poor": it also says sinfully disposed, un-pious deeds and fatherless. Chamatkar Chintamani's is not just earning through people of another faith: it opens with anxiety to have children. Both halves are restored here as what the texts say, not as forecasts.

Set side by side with Rahu's lines on the same page, the split is clear. For Rahu in the 9th, Chamatkar Chintamani is warm (good qualities, pilgrimages, kindness) and Phaldeepika mixed (bitter speech and no charity, but a village leader). For Ketu both are cooler: Phaldeepika is the harshest line printed for either node at this house, and Chamatkar Chintamani's is about wanting children and finding wealth through outsiders. None of the three Ketu lines names a condition under which it would hold or fail.

What BPHS says, and what it says only of Rahu

BPHS has no line for Ketu in the 9th house as such. Three lines in its bhava chapters are easy to borrow and should not be. Ch. 21 Sl. 3, which has a node in an angle or trine performing a Vedic sacrifice, names Rahu only. Ch. 20 Sl. 30, the "devoid of fortunes" combination, places Rahu in the 9th from the 9th, the 5th house. And the block of father verses in Ch. 20 Sl. 13-25 names Rahu twice and Ketu never. Ch. 3 Sl. 30 does say "Ketu is akin to Rahu", but BPHS does not itself carry Rahu's house lines over to Ketu, and this page does not either.

Where BPHS does speak of Ketu by name is in the Dasha chapters, below, and there the 9th is in Ketu's favourable group.

Advanced Predictive Astrology: Jupiter's aspect

Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 25) calls Ketu "a malefic planet not conducive to material pleasures" and says that Ketu's combination with the 9th and 10th houses or their lords, together with a debilitated Saturn, "kills the very roots of a happy life". It then adds: "Aspect of Jupiter on Ketu on these houses removes all the blemishes of Ketu." The rule has two halves, and the harsh one needs Saturn in fall as well as Ketu in the 9th or 10th; it is not a verdict on every 9th-house Ketu.

The author illustrates it with four charts, all with Ketu in the 9th. In one, a public figure whose Ketu sat with the Sun in the 9th and whose 9th lord was in the 8th, he reads notoriety. In two, the physicist C. V. Raman and the sage Ramana Maharshi, both Libra rising, Jupiter in the 5th aspects Ketu in the 9th; for Ramana Maharshi Ketu is also joined by the Moon, and the author notes his 9th lord Mercury was with the Lagna lord. In the fourth, Prithviraj Chauhan, Aries rising, Ketu in the 9th is aspected by Saturn from the 5th and the 9th lord Jupiter is debilitated. Two things to note. These are one modern author's illustrations from famous lives, not a sample. And Saturn aspecting the 9th from the 5th is not a BPHS aspect (BPHS gives Saturn the 3rd, 7th and 10th), so that case rests on the author's own scheme.

With Uttara Kalamrita's note that nodes turn auspicious in a trine, that gives two routes by which a 9th-house Ketu reads better than its sutra: being in a trine at all, and receiving Jupiter's aspect. In this app's aspect scheme Jupiter aspects the 9th from the 1st, the 3rd (with Rahu) or the 5th.

Rahu in the 3rd: the other half of this placement

Ketu and Rahu stand at the same degree of opposite signs, so in this app's whole-sign houses a Ketu in the 9th always has Rahu in the 3rd. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give every graha a full aspect on the 7th from itself and special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, without naming the nodes; the engine follows that and gives each node the 7th. Ketu's single aspect therefore falls on the 3rd, on Rahu. The axis joins the house of fortune and dharma to the house of one's own effort, where the texts favour the nodes: BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 say in a bracket that Rahu and Ketu "give favourable results" in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, and Saravali Ch. 12 Sl. 3-5 have Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th, aspected by benefics, destroying the evils of a birth. Both of those apply to the Rahu opposite this Ketu, not to Ketu itself. Because the Bhrigu Sutras use one sutra for both nodes, Rahu in the 3rd house and Ketu in the 3rd house share their sutra too.

Counted the other way, a Ketu in the 9th is aspected by any planet sitting with Rahu in the 3rd, by Mars from the 6th or 10th house counted from Ketu, by Jupiter from the 5th or 9th, and by Saturn from the 4th or 11th. In this whole-sign scheme that means Mars in the 2nd or 6th, Jupiter in the 1st or 5th, and Saturn in the 12th or 7th house of the chart.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 82-84) disagrees on aspects: it gives Ketu, like Rahu, the 3rd, 7th and 10th. From the 9th those fall on the 11th, the 3rd and the 6th. The app marks only the 3rd, so readers using that book will see Ketu reaching two houses the app does not.

Whose agent is it? Ketu and the lord of the 9th

Ketu owns no sign in this app's tables, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give predominantly the effects of the house lord they join or of the house they occupy. The commentary closing the Bhrigu Sutras chapter (pp. 114-115) records "a strong school of thought" that sets an order: a node acts for the planet it is conjoined with; failing that, for a planet aspecting it; only when it is neither joined nor aspected does it stand for the lord of its sign. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 142, rule 10) says much the same. In whole-sign houses the lord of Ketu's sign is the lord of the 9th itself. For the 9th that is the lord of fortune, so a Ketu alone and unaspected here reads through the lord of a trine.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara adds a detail that bears on this house in particular. It makes Ketu the karaka for paternal relations and Rahu for maternal ones (p. 118). The 9th is BPHS's house of the father, so a 9th-house Ketu puts the paternal significator in the paternal house. The book draws no conclusion from that, and neither does this page; it is one more reason the father is the subject people bring to this placement. Of its general character, the same book says Ketu "stands for hardships and isolation" and, well placed, inclines a person towards "renunciation and emancipation" (pp. 83-84), which is close to the app's unused favourable string for this house.

Uttara Kalamrita at the 9th

The same commentary quotes three points from Uttara Kalamrita. Point (2): if one node and the lord of a trikona are in the 9th or 10th, "the yoga will cause prosperity", and even a conjunction of either node with a trikona lord "will prove beneficial". It offers a second form, one node in the 9th and the other in the 10th, which can never occur, since the nodes are always opposite: with Ketu in the 9th, Rahu is in the 3rd. Point (3): the nodes "become auspicious" in a trikona or kendra, or joined with the lord of the kona they occupy, or with any kendra or kona lord; but if the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th, the auspiciousness of the yoga is lost. The printed text is garbled in places; this page uses only the clauses that read plainly.

The spoiling clause depends on the rising sign. The 9th lord also owns the 12th for Aries rising (Jupiter) and Libra rising (Mercury), and the 8th for Gemini rising (Saturn). For those three Lagnas, on this reading, Ketu's trikona yoga at the 9th is lost; for the other nine it stands. BPHS's own Yoga Karaka rule for the nodes (Ch. 34 Sl. 17) needs a Kendra and does not reach the 9th.

Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods from the 9th

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 71-77 introduce Ketu as "a headless trunk (Kabandha)" and sort his period into groups. If Ketu is "in a Kendr, a Trikon, or in Labh, in a benefic Rāśi, in his exaltation, or in his own Rāśi", the period brings cordial relations with the king, headship of a country or village, conveyances, happiness from children and wife, gain from foreign countries and cattle. The 9th is a trikona, so a 9th-house Ketu qualifies on house alone. The same passage splits the seven years: Raj Yog at the start, fearfulness in the middle, ailments and distant journeys at the end. The adverse group is Ketu in the 2nd, 8th or 12th, "or receives a Drishti from a malefic". Ketu Mahadasha sets out the period sub-period by sub-period, and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

That last clause is a real ambiguity for this house. A 9th-house Ketu always has Rahu opposite, and Rahu is a natural malefic (Ch. 3 Sl. 11). If Rahu's 7th glance counts as a malefic aspect, every Ketu in the 9th, and in every other house, falls into the adverse group too, which would empty the good group. BPHS names no aspects for the nodes in Ch. 26, so the text does not settle it. One workable reading, and it is a reading rather than a rule, is to count only the aspects of the grahas BPHS does give aspects to, among the malefics the Sun, Mars and Saturn, and to treat Rahu's opposition as a given of every chart.

The general test of Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, favourable in the Lagna, exaltation, own or friendly sign, unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th, is silent on the 9th, so it does not contradict the special rule. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 favour the nodes in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, not the 9th. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time a Dasha's results by the lord's third of the sign and add that for the always-retrograde nodes they are "realized in the reverse order": a Ketu in the last ten degrees of its sign delivers early in its period, one in the first ten late.

The sub-period rules, chapter by chapter

Each of BPHS's Antardasha chapters gives Ketu's sub-period inside one Mahadasha. Some count Ketu's house from the Lagna, which reaches a 9th-house Ketu directly; others count from the Mahadasha lord, which depends on where that lord is. Several chapters also prescribe remedial measures; this app does not prescribe them.

Venus's MahadashaCh. 60 Sl. 67-72Exalted, own sign, with a Yoga Karaka, or with positional strength; no house named8th/12th from Venus, or with a malefic
Read in bphs.txt, Ch. 52-60. Ketu's own sub-period names the 9th lord explicitly, and a 9th-house Ketu is always tied to that lord as its dispositor.

Two details in the table matter for this house. Ketu's own sub-period is the one rule that names the 9th lord, and a Ketu in the 9th is always related to that lord, at least as its dispositor; so that clause and the trine clause meet together here. And the Saturn chapter is the exception that should not be smoothed away: it reads Ketu's sub-period as evil "even if" Ketu is in a kendra or trikona, unless Ketu is well placed from Saturn itself. The Venus chapter's translator adds a frank bracket: "It is not laid down anywhere, in which Bhava Ketu does get positional strength."

The other node's sub-period inside Ketu's own Mahadasha also reaches this placement. Ch. 59 Sl. 45-47 read Rahu's sub-period as gainful, with some trouble at the start, if Rahu is in a kendra, a trikona, the 11th, the 3rd or the 2nd. With Ketu in the 9th, Rahu is always in the 3rd, so that clause is met for every chart on this page.

A modern Dasha aphorism

Advanced Predictive Astrology's list of Dasha aphorisms (p. 124, no. 22) says that when Rahu and Ketu are in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositors, "they give very bad results". For a 9th-house Ketu the dispositor is the 9th lord, so the test is where that lord sits: in the 4th house, Ketu is 6th from it; in the 2nd, 8th from it; in the 10th, 12th from it. A 9th lord anywhere else passes. This is one modern author's rule, not a classical sloka.

How this app reads Ketu in the 9th

Your Kundali row for Ketu turns favourable only for a planet exalted, in Moolatrikona, own or friendly sign, and outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The engine returns Neutral dignity for Ketu in every sign, so every Ketu in the 9th gets one sentence: "classically more testing, tending toward real detachment from father or belief under affliction". The favourable string for this house, "a strong, genuine pull toward spirituality and pilgrimage - genuinely auspicious in this Trikona per classical rules", is in the code but unreachable. Read the row as the house's theme under affliction, not a finding about your Ketu.

The Mahadasha sentence uses the testing wording, "disconnection, unexpected loss and a pull toward isolation", and the three-level grade reads neutral. In the code the grade turns challenging only for a debilitated or enemy-sign dignity or a 6th, 8th or 12th house, and good only for a strong dignity, so with Ketu always Neutral a 9th-house Ketu is always graded neutral. Only a Ketu in the 1st reaches the favourable sentence. BPHS Ch. 47's trine rule, under which a 9th-house Ketu is in the good group, is not what the app applies.

A transit is a different measurement. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, and with the malefic rule it applies to Ketu, transiting Ketu in the 9th sign from the Moon reads neutral, because the source gives no rule for that position. The engine's table gives Ketu about 548 days in a sign, moving backward.

A worked chart

An illustrative birth, not a real person: 15 January 1988, 07:30 IST, New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E), computed in this app's engine on 9 October 2026; every figure matches an earlier run. Capricorn rises at 3.30 degrees. Ketu is at 2.74 degrees of Virgo, in Uttara Phalguni, in the 9th house; Rahu is at 2.74 Pisces in the 3rd with Jupiter, in Jupiter's own sign. Mercury, lord of Virgo and so of the 9th, is in Capricorn in the 1st with the Sun and is combust. The Moon and Mars are in Scorpio in the 11th, Venus in Aquarius in the 2nd, Saturn in Sagittarius in the 12th.

Nothing joins Ketu, but two planets aspect it: Jupiter from Rahu's house by the 7th aspect, and Saturn from the 12th by its 10th-house aspect. By the agent rule Ketu acts for them first. For Capricorn rising, Jupiter rules the 3rd and 12th and Saturn the 1st and 2nd, so the Lagna lord is one of Ketu's two principals. Jupiter's aspect on a 9th-house Ketu is the softening case of Advanced Predictive Astrology's p. 25; Saturn is not debilitated, so that page's harsh half is not met. Virgo is Ketu's Moolatrikona in Uttara Kalamrita's scheme; the engine reads Neutral.

Hand checks against the rules above. Uttara Kalamrita's point (3) is met by position, Ketu in a trikona, and its spoiling clause is not, since Mercury owns the 6th and 9th, not the 8th or 12th; point (2) is not met, since no trikona lord joins Ketu. Counted from Mercury in Capricorn, Ketu in Virgo is 9th, not the 6th, 8th or 12th, so aphorism 22 does not fire. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 put Ketu in the good group by house, but Saturn's aspect is a malefic aspect, so the adverse clause is met too; the text gives no rule for weighing them.

The engine prints the row as "classically more testing, tending toward real detachment from father or belief under affliction" and the Mahadasha as testing, graded neutral. The Moon in Anuradha, a Saturn nakshatra, puts Ketu's Mahadasha from 20 January 2023 to 19 January 2030. On 9 October 2026 it is in Ketu-Rahu, a sub-period running from 20 December 2025 to 8 January 2027; Ketu-Jupiter follows to 14 December 2027. By Ch. 59 Sl. 45-47, Rahu in the 3rd meets the gainful clause for Ketu-Rahu. Ketu's own sub-period, 20 January to 18 June 2023, met Ch. 59 Sl. 1-2 twice over, trine and 9th-lord relation, while Sl. 3-4 needed Ketu in the 8th or 12th with a combust graha, which it is not, though Mercury is combust. Ketu is in the first ten degrees of Virgo, so the reversed decanate rule places its Mahadasha results toward the end of the period.

Checking a Ketu in the 9th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the birth time: Ketu's sign barely depends on it, its house entirely (what a missing birth time costs). Within two degrees of a sign boundary, the mean or true node can decide the sign.
  2. List any planet in the 9th with Ketu; by the agent rule its lordships are what Ketu mostly delivers. Jupiter there, or aspecting from the 1st, 3rd or 5th, is the modern casebook's softening condition. Failing that, list the planets aspecting it; failing both, read the lord of the 9th.
  3. Note whether the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th (Aries, Gemini, Libra rising), and where it sits relative to Ketu.
  4. Test Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator against the table above, and the lord's strength in the Shad Bala calculator, which has no row for Ketu itself.
  5. Read the other end of the axis in Rahu in the 3rd house, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
Does Ketu in the 9th house affect the father?
Phaldeepika, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, includes "fatherless" in its Ketu line, and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara makes Ketu the karaka for paternal relations. Chamatkar Chintamani's Ketu line does not mention the father, and none of these lines gives a condition. This app makes no prediction about anyone's parent; its row names the house's subjects under affliction and is printed for every 9th-house Ketu alike.
Does Ketu in the 9th make a person irreligious or spiritual?
The shared Bhrigu sutra says irreligious; Phaldeepika speaks of un-pious deeds; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara says a well-placed Ketu inclines towards renunciation; the engine's unused favourable string says a pull toward spirituality and pilgrimage. The sources do not agree, and none of them describes a person's actual beliefs.
Is the Bhrigu sutra for Ketu in the 9th the same as for Rahu?
Yes. The translator notes that the author gives the same effects for both nodes in every house. Only the Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines printed with it are separate for Ketu.
Jupiter aspects my 9th-house Ketu. What changes?
Advanced Predictive Astrology says Jupiter's aspect on a Ketu in the 9th or 10th removes all its blemishes, and by the agent rule Ketu then acts for Jupiter's own lordships. The app's row does not look at aspects, so it does not change.
Is a Ketu Mahadasha good with Ketu in the 9th?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 put Ketu in a trikona in the good group, with Raj Yog at the start, fear in the middle and ailments and distant journeys at the end. A malefic aspect puts it in the adverse group as well. The app's label is testing and neutral for every 9th-house Ketu.
Why does the app call my Ketu in the 9th "classically more testing"?
Because the row's favourable wording needs a strong dignity, and the engine gives Ketu none in any sign. Every Ketu in the 9th gets the same sentence. Who joins and aspects your Ketu, which the texts treat as decisive, is something the row does not look at.
Is my Ketu in the 9th exalted or debilitated?
The texts do not agree. BPHS Ch. 47 exalts Ketu in Scorpio; Uttara Kalamrita (as the Bhrigu Sutras report it) adds a fall in Taurus; Sanketnidhi exalts it in Sagittarius; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara exalts it in Scorpio and Sagittarius and debilitates it in Taurus and Gemini; and a strong school gives the nodes no sign at all. This app follows the last and assigns Ketu no dignity.
Does Saravali say anything about Ketu in the 9th?
No. Its planets-in-houses chapter has no verse for either node, and its 9th-house chapter speaks only of occupants and lords in general.
