Ketu is a calculated point, always opposite Rahu, that BPHS describes in one clause and then conditions in dozens. This reference sets out its disputed dignities, its single aspect, its house readings, its seven-year Mahadasha and its transits with chapter and sloka, and shows exactly how this app computes each.

Ketu is the one graha in a Vedic chart that is not a thing. It is the point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path going south, always exactly opposite Rahu, with no light and no body. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) describes it in one clause, "Ketu is akin to Rahu" (Ch. 3 Sloka 30), and then spends chapters on what it does in its periods. The texts are thin on what Ketu is and dense on the conditions under which it helps or harms.

This page sets out what BPHS, Bhrigu Sutras, Saravali and one modern casebook say about Ketu, with chapter and sloka, where they disagree, and where this app's engine deliberately does less than the texts. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone. Find your own Ketu with the Birth Chart calculator; the other end of the axis is Rahu in Vedic astrology.

What Ketu is: a point, not a body

BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 10 names nine grahas with Ketu last, and Sloka 11 glosses Rahu and Ketu as the ascending and descending nodes of the Moon. The introduction to Bhrigu Sutras (Part I) gives the geometry: the Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees to the Sun's apparent path, the two circles cross at points exactly 180 degrees apart, and the crossing where the Moon moves from north to south is Ketu. The nodes cannot be observed, only calculated. It also retells the Puranic story: an Asura who drank the nectar was cut in two, the head became Rahu and the body and tail Ketu, and both are said to swallow the Sun and Moon at eclipses. BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 71 keeps the image, calling Ketu Kabandha, the headless trunk.

This app computes Rahu as the mean longitude of the Moon's ascending node and sets Ketu 180 degrees from it. In the engine the node moves backward at about 3.18 arc-minutes a day: one sign in about 566 days, a full circuit in 18.6 years. Bhrigu Sutras gives 19 degrees 20 minutes a year and about 18 months to a sign. Because the motion is always backward, the engine flags Ketu retrograde in every chart; the R beside it in your Kundali is a constant, not a finding.

  • Ketu and Rahu are always in opposite signs at the same degree, so in a whole-sign chart they sit seven houses apart: 1 and 7, 2 and 8, 3 and 9, 4 and 10, 5 and 11, 6 and 12.
  • They are opposite in the Navamsa too, since 180 degrees is 54 navamsa divisions, four and a half turns of the zodiac. The Navamsa (D9) calculator shows it for any chart.

Mean node or true node: why another app may show a different Ketu

The real node wobbles around its average position. Every chart, dasha and transit in this app reads the mean node; the engine also carries the true-minus-mean difference as a diagnostic. Sampled daily from 1950 to 2049, the true node was never more than 1.88 degrees from the mean, enough to put Ketu in a different sign on 3.15 per cent of those days and in a different nakshatra on 7.13 per cent.

No text in this app's library says which node a rule was written for. Where the choice can change a verdict the app says so: the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator re-runs its test on the true node. If another app shows your Ketu in the neighbouring sign, check the degree; within two degrees of a boundary the node model can decide it, on top of the ayanamsa question in why two apps give you two different nakshatras.

Ketu at a glance

BPHS Ch. 3 writes most of its attribute rows for seven grahas, the Sun through Saturn, and adds the nodes in a few places only. Ketu's table is short for that reason, and its last row lists what the chapter does not give.

One word, three things: the node, the sky-Ketus and UpaKetu

Searching a text for Ketu turns up more than the node. Saravali, in this app's library, never treats the node Ketu as a graha: its Ch. 4 gives Rahu a governance and a direction (Sloka 1-2, 8) and names the nodes together once (Sloka 14-15), and its other Ketus are sights in the sky, such as the star in which a Ketu rises (Ch. 10 Sloka 12-13) or an Upaketu seen at birth (Ch. 39 Sloka 11). BPHS has a third: UpaKetu, a sub-graha derived from the Sun's longitude that always sits one sign behind the Sun (Ch. 3 Sloka 61-64), with twelve house readings of its own (Ch. 25 Sloka 50-61). This app computes no sub-grahas, so everything it labels Ketu is the node.

What Ketu signifies

BPHS gives Ketu no entry in the list where the Sun is the soul and the Moon the mind (Ch. 3 Sloka 12-13 covers seven grahas). Its list of constant significators reads the wife, father, mother, parents-in-law and maternal grandfather from Ketu (Ch. 32 Sloka 18-21), a line this app does not use. The variable Char Karakas are chosen from seven grahas, or eight with Rahu in another view (Sloka 1-2), never Ketu; the Char Karakas calculator uses the seven.

Ketu's reputation for spiritual matters comes from the Karakamsa chapter. BPHS Ch. 33 reads Ketu in the 5th from the Atma Karaka's Navamsa sign as a mathematician skilled in Jyotish (Sloka 87-92 1/2), and makes it the hinge of every clause about worship and final liberation in the 12th from that sign (Sloka 63-74). The liberation line is narrow: Ketu there, in Aries or Sagittarius, aspected by a benefic. The 12th from Karakamsa calculator reports the occupancy clauses and issues no verdict on anyone's liberation; the Ishta Devata question explains where that line is drawn.

Among modern readings, Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 25) calls Ketu a malefic not conducive to material pleasures, and on p. 152 reads a Moon joined by Ketu as philosophically inclined and secretive. This engine compresses the tradition into one working gloss, detachment and spiritual focus. BPHS Ch. 17 Sloka 3-5 and 9-12 also associate the nodes with the abdomen and Ketu with the navel: a classification in a text, not medical advice. The Career and Money calculator adds a list of fields for Ketu (research, diagnostics, investigation, deep specialist craft) that is the engine's own modern rendering, not a sloka.

Dignity: three schemes in the texts, none in this engine

For seven grahas BPHS settles exaltation, fall, own sign and Moolatrikona in Ch. 3 Sloka 49-54. The nodes are not in that passage. Their dignities appear only in Ch. 47 Sloka 34-39 1/2, inside the discussion of Rahu's Dasha, and the introduction to Bhrigu Sutras says the ancients disputed the point and reports two more schemes.

This app's dignity tableNoneNoneNoneNone
BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 42, on Chara Dasha, separately assigns Ketu the four signs counted from Scorpio.

The schemes agree on little beyond Scorpio. BPHS and Uttara Kalamrita both exalt Ketu there; Sanketnidhi moves the exaltation to Sagittarius, which BPHS calls the Moolatrikona. The commentary closing the Bhrigu Sutras chapter on the nodes adds a fourth position: a strong school holds that the nodes own no sign at all. This engine takes that position for scoring. Its dignity table holds seven grahas, and its dignity function returns Neutral for Ketu in all twelve signs.

  • No Shad Bala row: the Shad Bala calculator scores seven grahas. A translator's note in BPHS Ch. 60 observes that nowhere is it laid down in which house Ketu gains positional strength.
  • No Vimshopaka Bala score and no row in the Ashtakavarga calculator, for the same reason.
  • No house lordship: the Chara Dasha calculator is the one place Ketu acts as a lord: following BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 158-166 it reads Scorpio from Mars or Ketu, whichever the sloka's tests pick, and says which in its output.
  • No friends or enemies: BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 55 derives friendship from the Moolatrikona for seven grahas, and the engine's table holds the same seven. Ketu's row therefore never reads friendly, enemy, exalted or debilitated.

A few sign-specific lines survive without any full sign-by-sign chapter. Chamatkar Chintamani, quoted in Bhrigu Sutras, reverses several Ketu verdicts by sign: comforts for a 2nd-house Ketu in Aries, Gemini or Virgo, happiness for a 7th-house Ketu in Scorpio, wealth for an 8th-house Ketu in Scorpio, Virgo or Aries. BPHS Ch. 45 Sloka 135-146 gives wealth to a Ketu in the state called Sayan in Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Virgo; this app computes none of those states.

The rule that carries the weight: Ketu takes on its company

With no sign of its own, Ketu is read through what it touches. BPHS Ch. 34 Sloka 16 says Rahu and Ketu give predominantly the effects of the house lord they are joined with, or of the house they occupy. Sloka 17 adds the favourable case: a node in an angle, aspected by or associated with the lord of a trine or an angle, becomes a Yoga Karaka.

The commentary closing the Bhrigu Sutras chapter gives a working order. A node acts as the agent of the planet it is conjoined with; if it is with none, of the planet that aspects it; and only when neither joined nor aspected does it stand for the lord of its sign. From Uttara Kalamrita it adds that the nodes turn auspicious in an angle or trine, or joined with the lord of one.

The modern casebook reads the influence the other way. Advanced Predictive Astrology says a planet close to Ketu produces malefic results (Vol. II, p. 52), that the Dasha of a planet in close company of a node disturbs the native, more so the tighter the orb (p. 124), and that Jupiter's aspect on a Ketu tied to the 9th or 10th house removes its blemishes (p. 25). BPHS makes Ketu the borrower; this book makes it the contaminant. A planet tightly conjunct Ketu is where the two readings diverge most.

The engine implements a narrower slice. Ketu is on its malefic list, so a benefic sharing a house with Ketu, or sitting with Rahu where Ketu's aspect falls, fails the unafflicted test in its Chandradhi and Amala yoga checks. It does not model borrowed lordship, and its Yoga Karaka panel, which follows the Lagna-by-Lagna list of BPHS Ch. 34 Sloka 19-44, never names a node. In the Yogas calculator Ketu appears only as an afflicting factor; Sloka 16 and 17 are rules you apply by eye.

Aspects: one, and it always falls on Rahu

BPHS Ch. 26 Sloka 2-5 gives every graha a full aspect on the 7th from itself and special aspects to three only: Saturn (3rd and 10th), Jupiter (5th and 9th) and Mars (4th and 8th). This engine follows that, so Ketu aspects one house, the 7th from its own, which is always the house Rahu occupies. "Ketu aspects my 4th house" and "Rahu is in my 4th house" are the same sentence. Counting the other way, the planets that can aspect Ketu are:

  • Any planet in the same house as Rahu, by the 7th aspect every graha casts.
  • Mars from the 6th or the 10th house counted from Ketu.
  • Jupiter from the 5th or the 9th house counted from Ketu.
  • Saturn from the 4th or the 11th house counted from Ketu.

Ketu in the twelve houses

Bhrigu Sutras gives the two nodes one shared chapter (Part II, Ch. 8, Sutras 1-32) with the same sutras for both, and notes that Brihat Jatak and Saravali do not treat the nodes in houses at all. Separate Ketu readings come from two texts it quotes, Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani. Lines on death, life-span, disease, the loss of children and the afterlife are left out of the table, which removes most of what the sutras say about the 5th, 7th and 8th.

Bhrigu Sutras Part II Ch. 8 and the views it quotes, paraphrased.

The 3rd, 6th and 11th are where both right-hand columns are kindest, and the 11th is the only house on which all three agree. BPHS says the same of periods: a parenthesis to Ch. 48 Sloka 18-20 has Rahu and Ketu giving favourable results in the 3rd, 6th and 11th. Elsewhere the texts split. Phaldeepika is harsh on the 12th where Chamatkar Chintamani sees a king who gives to charity, and Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 24) reads a 10th-house Ketu as a push toward cruel deeds where Uttara Kalamrita counts an angle as a place the nodes turn auspicious.

How this app words Ketu's house row

The Ketu row in your Kundali draws on the same chapter, crossed with each house's own subject. The function behind the planet rows prints its favourable sentence only for a planet that is exalted, in Moolatrikona, in its own or a friendly sign, and outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The engine gives Ketu none of those dignities, so across 4,000 test charts covering every house the row used its "classically more testing" wording every time. Read it as the theme the house takes on under affliction (distance from siblings in the 3rd, lack of direction in career in the 10th, isolation in the 12th), not as a finding that your Ketu is afflicted. The row does not see who joins or aspects Ketu.

Each house has its own page: Ketu in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th.

Kaal Sarp: Ketu as one end of an axis

Kaal Sarp is the condition in which all seven classical grahas lie on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. This engine tests exactly that. None of the searchable astrology texts in this app's library names Kaal Sarp, so the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator attaches no type name; it reports which graha is nearest an end of the axis, by how many degrees, and whether the true node would change the verdict. Kaal Sarp Dosha is a question of geometry works through the rule.

Timing, part one: the seven-year Mahadasha

BPHS Ch. 46 Sloka 12-15 sets out the Vimshottari scheme: nine lords in a fixed order counted from Krittika, with Ketu given 7 of the 120 years. That order makes Ketu the lord of Magha, Mula and Ashwini, the first 13 degrees 20 minutes of Leo, Sagittarius and Aries. In every life Ketu's Mahadasha follows Mercury's 17 years and hands over to Venus's 20. A Moon in one of Ketu's nakshatras starts life inside it, with only the unexpired fraction left (Sloka 16); for everyone else the engine's timeline gives the windows below. What a Mahadasha actually is covers the mechanics and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

What BPHS says the seven years bring

BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 72-77 gives conditions. A Ketu in an angle, a trine or the 11th, in a benefic's sign, exalted or in its own sign: cordial relations with the ruler, headship of a village or country, conveyances, happiness from spouse and children, gains from abroad. A Ketu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th: a rise in position and good relations with friends. A Ketu in the 2nd, 8th or 12th, or aspected by a malefic: confinement, loss of home and kin, anxiety, illness. The passage also divides the period into thirds: Raj Yog at the start, fearfulness in the middle, ailments and distant journeys at the end.

Ch. 47 Sloka 3-4 times a Dasha's results by the lord's decanate, first third of a sign early and last third late, and reverses the order for Rahu and Ketu because they are always retrograde. So a Ketu in the last ten degrees of its sign delivers at the start of its Dasha. In the Chara Dasha chapter, Ch. 50 Sloka 42 adds that a Dasha is productive of good when Ketu stands in any of the four signs from Scorpio.

How this app reads a Ketu Mahadasha

The app applies the general test of Ch. 47 Sloka 5-6 to every lord: favourable in the Lagna or in an exaltation, own or friendly sign; unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th, in debilitation or in an enemy's sign. With no dignity in the engine, Ketu can pass only one way: in 4,000 test charts the reading came out favourable 338 times, every one a Ketu in the 1st house. Its three-level grade is challenging in the 6th, 8th or 12th and neutral everywhere else. That is narrower than Sloka 72-77, and in two houses it points the other way: the sloka counts the 6th among Ketu's good houses and the 2nd among the bad. When a Ketu period is running, test the sloka's conditions yourself. The Career and Money feature likewise notes that a node's periods are scored on house occupation, aspect and Ashtakavarga alone, a thinner read; Ketu Mahadasha takes the period sub-period by sub-period.

Timing, part two: Ketu's sub-periods

Ketu also runs as an Antardasha inside every other Mahadasha, for 7/120 of its length. Across all nine Mahadashas those sub-periods add up to seven years. BPHS gives each its own conditions.

MahadashaKetu's Antardasha lastsBPHSConditions the text names

Lengths are Mahadasha years x 7 / 120, in 30-day months.

Two patterns repeat. Ketu's position is counted from the Mahadasha lord as well as from the Lagna, and the 8th or 12th from that lord is the adverse place in nearly every chapter. And each chapter ends with a warning for a Ketu tied to the 2nd or 7th house, followed by a ritual remedy; those lines belong to the longevity scheme of BPHS Ch. 44 and are not repeated, since this app computes no longevity and prescribes no remedies. Inside a Mahadasha explains how sub-periods are cut.

In space, the same proportions give Ketu a sub of 46 minutes 40 seconds of arc in every nakshatra, an extension of the BPHS rule that the Nakshatra Sub-Lord calculator applies and the sub-lord article explains. In other dasha systems Ketu's place varies: BPHS Ch. 46 denies it any period in Ashtottari (Sloka 17-20) and gives it 15 years in Shodshottari and 11 in Dwadashottari (Sloka 24-28), both computed by the Alternate Dashas calculator.

Timing, part three: transits

Ketu spends about 566 days in a sign, moving backward: from Leo into Cancer, not into Virgo. A full circuit takes 18.6 years, so transiting Ketu returns to its natal place near ages 18.6, 37.2, 55.8 and 74.4, and transiting Rahu stands on natal Ketu halfway between. No text in the library attaches a reading to those returns; they are arithmetic, given so that dates can be checked.

On 5 October 2026 the engine places Ketu at 3.26 degrees of Leo, in Magha, one of its own nakshatras. It entered Leo on 18 May 2025 and, on the mean node, crosses into Cancer on 6 December 2026 (Indian time), into Gemini on 24 June 2028 and into Taurus on 11 January 2030. The mean node never turns back, so each crossing happens once.

The Gochar calculator reads a transit from your natal Moon sign, following the transit chapter of the book its code cites. Ketu takes the rule for malefics: the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon are good positions, the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th testing, and the rest neutral because the source gives no rule for them. A separate table in that source flags one position per graha, and Ketu's is the 2nd from the Moon; the flag sits beside the favourable verdict without overturning it.

This is one rule from one source, read from the Moon alone; the app's Ashtakavarga transit reading covers the seven classical grahas and has no line for Ketu. The Timing feature explains how dated windows are shown.

Ketu and the number 7

Indian numerology gives each root number a graha, and 7 is Ketu's. Vedic Numerology Basic stresses that Western numerology assigns 7 to Neptune and the Vedic system to Ketu, and the course notes this app draws on describe 7 as the seeker, inquisitive and solitary. The engine names Ketu as ruler of 7 and, for that number, lists Scorpio and Sagittarius as favourable signs, the BPHS pair. See number 7 in numerology and the Numerology Profile calculator.

Checking Ketu in your own chart

Ketu's sign depends little on the birth time, since the node moves about three arc-minutes a day; its house depends on it entirely. What a missing birth time costs explains the difference.

  1. Cast the chart with the Birth Chart calculator and note Ketu's sign, degree, nakshatra and house. Rahu is opposite at the same degree.
  2. If Ketu is within two degrees of either end of its sign, treat the sign as model-dependent.
  3. List who shares Ketu's house. By BPHS Ch. 34 Sloka 16 that planet's lordships are what Ketu mostly delivers.
  4. List who aspects it: any planet with Rahu, Mars in the 6th or 10th from Ketu, Jupiter in the 5th or 9th, Saturn in the 4th or 11th.
  5. If Ketu is alone and unaspected, read the lord of its sign, including its score in the Shad Bala calculator. Then test Sloka 17: Ketu in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th with the lord of an angle or trine.
  6. Find Ketu's Mahadasha and its Antardasha in the period now running with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, and test them against the BPHS conditions above.
  7. Check the transit from your Moon with the Gochar calculator, and the axis with the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator.

Two worked charts

Both are illustrative births, not real people, computed in this app's engine for New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E). Every figure below is engine output.

Chart A: 27 August 1991, 21:10 IST - a Ketu Mahadasha in progress

Aries rises. Ketu is at 22.76 degrees of Gemini in the 3rd house and Rahu at the same degree of Sagittarius in the 9th. No planet shares the 3rd and nothing aspects it except Rahu, so by the Bhrigu Sutras commentary Ketu stands for Mercury, lord of Gemini, which is retrograde and combust in Leo and scores 5.21 out of 20 in the app's Shad Bala (Weak). Ketu's row reads "classically more testing, tending toward real disinterest or distance from siblings under affliction."

The Moon is in Uttara Bhadrapada, a Saturn nakshatra, so Ketu's Mahadasha runs from 2 January 2023 to 1 January 2030, beginning at age 31, inside the 17-to-36 window. On 5 October 2026 the chart is in Ketu-Rahu, a sub-period lasting from 2 December 2025 to 20 December 2026. The app calls the Mahadasha a more testing placement and grades it neutral. BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 72-77 reads a 3rd-house Ketu's Dasha favourably, and with Ketu in the last third of its sign the reversed decanate rule puts its results at the start. The app's sentence and the sloka disagree, for the reason given above. In transit Ketu in Leo is the 6th from this Pisces Moon, favourable, turning neutral in Cancer, the 5th. Ketu also sits alone in the 12th from this chart's Karakamsa, so the 12th from Karakamsa calculator reports the Ketu-alone clause of BPHS Ch. 33.

Chart B: 27 August 1993, 06:20 IST - born in Ketu's Dasha, with Jupiter's aspect

Leo rises. Ketu is at 14.05 degrees of Taurus in the 10th house, Rahu in Scorpio in the 4th. Taurus is the debilitation sign in Uttara Kalamrita's scheme; the engine, as always, reads Neutral. Jupiter in Virgo in the 2nd, the 5th house from Ketu, aspects it. Ketu is thus in an angle and aspected by the lord of the 5th: on its face the condition of BPHS Ch. 34 Sloka 17, though Sloka 15 limits lords who also own an evil house and Jupiter rules the 8th for Leo. The casebook's remark about Jupiter's aspect on a 10th-house Ketu applies directly. The app's row still reads "classically more testing, tending toward real lack of direction or recognition in career under affliction", because the row does not look at aspects.

The Moon is in Mula with 90.4 per cent of the nakshatra already crossed, so Ketu's Mahadasha was running at birth with about eight months left, to 28 April 1994, and does not return until 2107. For this chart Ketu matters in timing through sub-periods only: next, seven months in the Moon's Mahadasha, 28 July 2027 to 26 February 2028. BPHS Ch. 53 Sloka 47-52 reads that sub-period well for a Ketu in an angle that has strength, a quality the texts never define for Ketu.

Common misreadings

  • "My Ketu is exalted" or "debilitated". Three schemes in the corpus name different signs, a fourth school gives the nodes no sign, and this app assigns none.
  • "The app says more testing, so my Ketu is bad." The row's wording is the same for every Ketu in that house.
  • "Ketu aspects my 5th and 9th." BPHS Ch. 26 gives special aspects to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars only. In this app Ketu has the 7th, where Rahu sits.
  • "Retrograde Ketu means something special." Both nodes are retrograde in every chart.
  • "Ketu Mahadasha is seven bad years." BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 72-77 lists favourable conditions first and puts Raj Yog at the start.
  • "Ketu gives moksha." The liberation line in BPHS Ch. 33 is one Jaimini condition on the 12th from the Karakamsa, not a property of Ketu in any house.

The other grahas have the same kind of reference page: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Rahu. Ketu's three nakshatras are Ashwini, Magha and Mula, and the Nakshatra calculator tells you whether your Moon is in one of them. The dignity dispute turns on Scorpio and Sagittarius. Every book cited here is listed on the Sources page, and how the chart is computed is on the Methodology page.

Is Ketu a real planet?
No. It is the Moon's descending node, the point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's apparent path going south. BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 11 glosses it that way, and this app computes it as the mean ascending node plus 180 degrees.
Is Ketu good or bad?
BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 11 lists it among the natural malefics. But Ch. 34 Sloka 16 says a node mostly gives the results of the house lord it joins or the house it sits in, and Sloka 17 makes it a Yoga Karaka in an angle with the lord of a trine or angle. The 3rd, 6th and 11th are where the texts are kindest to it.
In which sign is Ketu exalted?
The texts disagree. BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 34-39 1/2 gives Scorpio; Bhrigu Sutras reports Uttara Kalamrita (Scorpio, with the fall in Taurus) and Sanketnidhi (Sagittarius). This app assigns Ketu no dignity at all.
Which houses does Ketu aspect?
One: the 7th from itself, which is always the house Rahu occupies. BPHS Ch. 26 Sloka 2-5 gives special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars.
How long is Ketu Mahadasha, and when does it come?
Seven years of the 120-year Vimshottari cycle (BPHS Ch. 46 Sloka 15), always after Mercury and before Venus. It is running at birth if your Moon is in Ashwini, Magha or Mula; otherwise the starting age depends on your birth nakshatra's lord, as in the table above. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.
Why does my chart show Ketu as retrograde?
Because the nodes always move backward through the zodiac, and the engine flags both retrograde in every chart. BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 3-4 uses the fact once: the decanate timing of a node's Dasha results is always reversed.
Why does the app call my Ketu placement "more testing"?
Because the planet-row function gives its favourable wording only to a planet with a strong dignity, and the engine assigns Ketu none. Every Ketu in the same house gets the same sentence. Who joins and aspects your Ketu is something you check with the steps on this page.
Why does another app put my Ketu in a different sign?
Most often the node model. This app uses the mean node; the true node can sit up to 1.88 degrees away, which moved Ketu into a different sign on 3.15 per cent of days between 1950 and 2049. A different ayanamsa can do the same near a sign boundary.
Does the app suggest remedies for Ketu?
No. BPHS ends each of its Ketu sub-period passages with a ritual or a gift in charity, and Bhrigu Sutras names a gem. This app carries no remedies, gemstones, mantras or rituals for any placement.
