Planet in house

What the Bhrigu Sutras, Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and BPHS say about Ketu in the 7th house: the shared sutra that turns on a benefic, the Ketu-only lines and their Scorpio exception, the Yoga Karaka rule for angular nodes, the Dasha and sub-period rules, and how this app reads the placement.

A Ketu in the 7th house sits on the descendant, the sign opposite the Lagna, in the house of the spouse, partnership and trade. It is an angle, so the rules that favour nodes in angles apply. The shared Bhrigu sutra for this house states a condition outright, the presence of a benefic with the node, and Chamatkar Chintamani adds a sign condition written for Ketu alone. Both are things you can check in a chart; this app checks neither.

This page describes rules, not a person. See also Ketu in Vedic astrology, the 7th house, Yuvati Bhava and Rahu in the 1st house; the Birth Chart calculator shows your Ketu's house.

A note on sources

Every classical line here was read in the books themselves: the Bhrigu Sutras (R. Santhanam's translation, with the Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines it prints under "Other Views"), Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS, G. C. Sharma's translation), Saravali, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Uttara Kalamrita are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras print them. Ketu is the thinner node in these sources: the Bhrigu Sutras give both nodes one shared set of sutras, Saravali has no node-in-house verse, and the only 7th-house lines written for Ketu alone are Phaladeepika's and Chamatkar Chintamani's.

The 7th house in brief

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 8 reads: "Wife, travel, trade, loss of sight, death etc. be known from Yuvati Bhava." Only one of the five is marriage. Saravali (Ch. 3) names the house Stri and Kama, the wife and desire, and the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction (Part I, p. 15) widens it to union and legal bonds, a partner in life or in business, and influence in foreign countries. It is the fourth angle and the descendant.

The Bhrigu Sutras name Ketu in the 7th-house reading of another planet too. For Jupiter in the 7th (Sutras 35-37) they give a learned spouse and financial gain, reversed if the 7th lord is weak or associated with or aspected by Rahu, Ketu, Saturn or Mars. So Ketu can change the reading of the 7th through the 7th lord as well as by sitting in the house.

The shared Bhrigu sutra, in full

The node chapter of the Bhrigu Sutras (Part II, Ch. 8) opens with a translator's note: the author gives the same effects for Rahu and Ketu in every house, presumably because they are always seventh to each other, while "the other authorities" give separate effects. Sutras 17-21 on p. 112 are therefore the text for Ketu in the 7th and, word for word, for Rahu in the 7th. Nothing in them is written for Ketu as such. Read whole, the block makes four statements.

  1. Two marriages, as the default.
  2. A clause about the first spouse's death and an illness of the second. It is the harshest line in the block, unconditional as printed, and reported here only as what the text says.
  3. With a malefic joined to the node, a disease the text calls "Ganda mala"; this "will not happen" with a benefic.
  4. The summary: "generally" two marriages, but only one if the node is in conjunction with a benefic.

Half the block turns on one test, malefic or benefic company, and the sutra spells out both branches. Repeating the two-marriage line without the benefic clause turns a conditional sutra into a blanket claim. The word used is conjunction, not aspect, and the block does not say how strong the benefic must be. Ganda mala is the text's name for an illness, reported as a classical association and not medical advice.

In a sweep we ran of 4,000 New Delhi charts from 1950, Ketu was in the 7th in 326, and in 84 of them, about 26 per cent, the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus shared the house. That is how often the sutra's one-marriage branch is met on the engine's list of benefics. The texts quoted here do not say whether a waning Moon or an afflicted Mercury counts.

Read in bhrigu-sutras.txt (lines 4433-4449) and saravali.txt. Paraphrased except where quoted. The earlier version of this page cut both Ketu lines to their first clauses.

Both Ketu-only lines are harder than the shared sutra, and only one has a way out. Phaladeepika reads humiliation, affairs, separation and intestinal trouble, with no condition. Chamatkar Chintamani reads loss of wealth, a danger from water and illness in the family, then exempts one sign: if Ketu is in Scorpio the native "will always be happy". From the table further down, Ketu in Scorpio in the 7th needs Taurus rising.

The same Bhrigu page gives Rahu in the 7th different lines: Phaladeepika makes Rahu independent and costly through relationships, and Chamatkar Chintamani gives Rahu a single clause about loss of the wife. Neither of Rahu's lines carries a sign exception. Ketu's Scorpio exception is the one place in the 7th-house block where the two nodes are told apart by a condition.

Where BPHS disagrees with Phaladeepika

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77, Parashara's passage on Ketu's Dasha, says that with Ketu in a kendra, a trikona or the 11th, in a benefic sign, or exalted or in its own sign, the period brings "cordial relations with the king", headship of a country or village, conveyances, happiness from children, gain from foreign countries and "happiness from wife". The 7th is a kendra. So for the same house, Phaladeepika reads separation from the spouse and BPHS reads happiness from the spouse in Ketu's period. The two answer slightly different questions, a life reading against a period reading, but on the subject of the partner they point opposite ways, and neither text refers to the other.

BPHS Ch. 18, the chapter on the 7th, names the nodes once, in Sl. 7, in a list of what each graha in the 7th says about one's associates. The wording is pejorative and is not reproduced. Its general malefic tests apply: Sl. 16 reads evils to the spouse if the 7th or its lord is joined by a malefic, "especially" if bereft of strength, and Ketu is a malefic in Ch. 3 Sl. 11. BPHS's own two-marriage rule, Sl. 19-21, runs through the 7th lord in fall or in a malefic sign and does not name the nodes, so the Bhrigu sutra's two-marriage line has no BPHS counterpart.

Where Saravali is silent

Saravali's chapter on planets in the houses (Ch. 30) has no verse for Rahu or Ketu in any house; a search of the chapter for either name returns nothing. Its node lines in Ch. 12, on evils cancelled at birth, name Rahu only, in the 1st, 3rd, 6th and 11th. Saravali has nothing to say about Ketu in the 7th, and this page does not fill the gap from elsewhere.

Rahu in the 1st: the other half of this placement

Ketu and Rahu stand at the same degree of opposite signs, so in this app's whole-sign houses a Ketu in the 7th always has Rahu in the 1st. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give every graha a full aspect on the 7th from itself and special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and the engine follows that. Ketu's single aspect therefore falls on the 1st, on Rahu, and Rahu's falls back on Ketu. Because the Bhrigu Sutras use one set of sutras for both nodes, the sutra for Rahu in the 1st is the same text as the sutra for Ketu in the 1st; Rahu in the 1st house takes that side, and Ketu in the 1st house the reverse axis.

Counted the other way, a Ketu in the 7th is aspected by any planet sitting with Rahu in the 1st, by Mars from the 6th or 10th house counted from Ketu, by Jupiter from the 5th or 9th, and by Saturn from the 4th or 11th. In this whole-sign scheme that means Mars in the 12th or 4th, Jupiter in the 11th or 3rd, and Saturn in the 10th or 5th house of the chart.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 82-83) gives the nodes aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th from themselves. On that reading a 7th-house Ketu would also aspect the 9th and the 4th. This app follows BPHS and gives Ketu the 7th aspect only, so nothing in the app reflects those two extra aspects.

Whose agent is it? Ketu and the lord of the 7th

Ketu owns no sign in this app's tables, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give "predominantly" the effects of the bhava lord they join, or of the bhava they occupy. The comments closing the Bhrigu Sutras chapter (p. 115) set an order: a node acts for the planet it is conjoined with; failing that, for a planet aspecting it; only when it is neither joined nor aspected does it stand for the lord of its sign. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 142, rule 10) states the same idea more loosely: the nodes give results by position, association and the lord of the house they occupy. In whole-sign houses the lord of Ketu's sign is the 7th lord, which is also the lord whose company with Ketu reverses Jupiter's 7th-house sutras.

Chatterjee adds a modern rule (Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, pp. 123-125, aphorism 22): nodes in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositor give bad results. For Ketu in the 7th, that means a 7th lord in the 2nd, the 12th or the 8th house of the chart. His aphorism 13 cuts the other way for company: a planet closely conjunct a node gives poor results in its own Dasha. The benefic that softens the shared sutra is, on that rule, the planet whose own period suffers.

Because the 7th is an angle, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 also applies: a node in an angle, aspected by or associated with the lord of a trine or an angle, becomes a Yoga Karaka. Sl. 15 limits lords that also own an evil house, so the lord doing the aspecting has to be checked as well. The engine's Yoga Karaka panel follows the Lagna-by-Lagna list of Sl. 19-44, which names no node, so this test is done by eye.

Uttara Kalamrita's three points, applied to the 7th

  1. Nodes "if endowed with strength" give effects like the planet owning the house they occupy or the planet they join (Bhrigu Sutras p. 115). A lone Ketu in the 7th reads like the 7th lord.
  2. A node with a trikona lord in the 9th or 10th causes prosperity, and "even a conjunction of either of these with the lord of a trikona will prove beneficial". The second half can be met by a 7th-house Ketu joined by the 5th or 9th lord.
  3. The nodes become auspicious in a kendra or trikona, or associated with the lord of the kendra or kona they occupy. For Ketu in the 7th, that lord is the 7th lord. The yoga is lost if the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th.

Which sign Ketu holds in the 7th

The books disagree on Ketu's signs. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 exalt Ketu in Scorpio, give it Sagittarius as moolatrikona and Scorpio as its own, and note that "some sages" make Pisces its own. Uttara Kalamrita, as the Bhrigu Sutras report it (Part I, p. 13), puts Ketu's exaltation in Scorpio and fall in Taurus, its own sign in Scorpio and its moolatrikona in Virgo. Sanketnidhi, on the same page, exalts it in Sagittarius and gives it Pisces. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 83) makes Ketu lord of Aries, exalted in Scorpio and Sagittarius and debilitated in Taurus and Gemini.

Whole-sign arithmetic: the 7th sign from each Lagna, with the dignity schemes named above. This app applies none of them and gives Ketu Neutral dignity in every sign.

Taurus rising is the row where the sources line up most. Ketu in Scorpio in the 7th is exalted in three schemes and owns the sign in two, it meets the Chamatkar Chintamani exception, and it meets the "exaltation or own sign" branch of BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 on top of the kendra branch. Scorpio rising is the reverse: Ketu in Taurus, in its fall in two schemes. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara adds, as a general description, that Ketu "stands for hardships and isolation" and, if well placed, inclines a person toward a spiritual and meditative life (pp. 83-84). It gives no reading by house.

Ketu's Mahadasha from the 7th

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 sort a Ketu period by house into three groups. The 7th is in the first, the angles, trines and the 11th, with the results quoted above. The 3rd, 6th and 11th form the second group, with "acquisition of a kingdom". The 2nd, 8th and 12th, or a malefic aspect, form the third. The same passage splits the seven years into thirds: Raj Yoga at the start, fear in the middle, ailments and distant journeys at the end. The general test of Sl. 5-6 names neither the 7th nor any of Ketu's houses, so it adds nothing here. Ketu Mahadasha sets out the period sub-period by sub-period, and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

BPHS says little about Ketu as a separate graha. Ch. 3 Sl. 30 describes Rahu and then says only that "Ketu is akin to Rahu", and Ch. 47 Sl. 71 introduces Ketu's Dasha by calling Ketu a "headless trunk (Kabandha)" among the grahas. One house line that a 7th-house Rahu can claim, Ch. 21 Sl. 3 on religious sacrifices with Rahu in an angle or trine, names Rahu alone, so this page does not transfer it to Ketu. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 118) makes Ketu the karaka of paternal relations, a general signification rather than a 7th-house rule.

Three other BPHS rules pull the other way. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 treat grahas in the 2nd or 7th with the lords of those Maraka houses as unfavourable, and their bracketed note gives the nodes favourable results only in the 3rd, 6th and 11th. Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 name a node in the 7th a Maraka, a longevity label this app does not compute. And Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time a Dasha by the lord's decanate and reverse the order for the "always retrograde" nodes: a Ketu in the last ten degrees of its sign delivers early in its period, one in the first ten late.

Ketu's sub-periods with Ketu in the 7th

The Antardasha chapters (BPHS Ch. 52-60) give Ketu's sub-period in each Mahadasha a house condition. A 7th-house Ketu meets two kinds of clause: the kendra clause, usually good, and the 2nd-or-7th clause, which almost every chapter gives to any graha in or owning a Maraka house. The text adds remedial measures to many clauses; this app does not prescribe them.

Ketu sub-period inKendra or Lagna-based clause2nd/7th clause
Sun (Ch. 52 Sl. 58-64)Good houses are the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th; the 7th is not namedAdverse; the text frames it in longevity terms
Moon (Ch. 53 Sl. 47-52)Gains in a kendra, trikona or the 3rd with strength; some loss at the startAffliction
Mars (Ch. 54 Sl. 48-54)Royal favour, gains, authority in a kendra, trikona, 3rd or 11th, or with benefic aspectDiseases, disgrace, loss of wealth
Rahu (Ch. 55 Sl. 40-45)Increase in cattle in a kendra or trikona; gains with benefic aspectOnly if Ketu is 2nd or 7th lord, which the app never makes it
Jupiter (Ch. 56 Sl. 32-38)Moderate results with a beneficPhysical distress
Saturn (Ch. 57 Sl. 16-23)Evil "even if" Ketu is in a kendra or trikona; good if kendra from the Dasha lordPhysical distress

Ketu (Ch. 59 Sl. 1-6)Happiness from wife and children and recognition, "but mental agony"Diseases, distress, separation from kin
Venus (Ch. 60 Sl. 67-74)Good with exaltation, own sign or "positional strength"Only if Ketu is 2nd or 7th lord
Paraphrased from bphs.txt lines 6155-7761. Clauses that count Ketu only from the Dasha lord are left out.

Two entries are worth reading closely. Ch. 57 is the one chapter that reads Ketu's sub-period as evil "even if" Ketu is exalted or in a kendra. And Ch. 60 makes positional strength one of its conditions, to which the translator adds a bracket: "It is not laid down anywhere, in which Bhava Ketu does get positional strength." For a 7th-house Ketu, then, Venus's chapter cannot be applied by house at all.

The earlier version of this page said the chapters other than those whose condition names the house count Ketu only from the Mahadasha lord. That was wrong: Ch. 52 counts the good houses from the Lagna, Ch. 55 Sl. 42 names a kendra, and Ch. 57 names a kendra or trikona before turning to the Dasha lord.

How this app reads Ketu in the 7th

Your Kundali row for Ketu turns favourable only for a planet exalted, in moolatrikona, own or friendly sign, and outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The engine returns Neutral dignity for Ketu in every sign, so every Ketu in the 7th gets one sentence: "classically more testing, tending toward real emotional distance in marriage under affliction". The favourable string for this house, "a spiritually compatible, karmic partnership - genuinely auspicious in this Kendra per classical rules", is in the code but unreachable. Read the row as the house's theme under affliction, not a finding about your Ketu.

The Mahadasha sentence uses the testing wording, "disconnection, unexpected loss and a pull toward isolation", and the three-level grade reads neutral. Only a Ketu in the 1st reaches the favourable sentence, and only the 6th, 8th and 12th turn the grade to challenging. In our 4,000-chart sweep all 326 charts with Ketu in the 7th got the testing row, the testing Mahadasha sentence and the neutral grade. A Taurus-rising chart with Ketu in Scorpio, the one case the classical sources agree on, gets the same sentence as any other.

A transit is a different measurement. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, and with the malefic rule it applies to Ketu, transiting Ketu in the 7th sign from the Moon reads neutral, because the source gives no rule for that position. Ketu takes about 566 days to cross a sign, moving backward.

A worked chart

An illustrative birth, not a real person: 1 July 1989, 22:30 IST, New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E), computed in this app's engine; every figure matched the earlier run of this page. Aquarius rises at 10.96 degrees, with Rahu in it. Ketu is at 4.46 degrees of Leo, in Magha pada 2, in the 7th house. The Sun, lord of Leo and so of the 7th, is in Gemini in the 5th with Jupiter. The Moon, exalted, and Mercury are in Taurus in the 4th, Mars and Venus in Cancer in the 6th, and Saturn, retrograde, in Sagittarius in the 11th.

No planet joins Ketu and no special aspect reaches the 7th; Ketu's only aspect comes from Rahu. Rahu, by contrast, is aspected by Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. On the Bhrigu order, a node aspecting a node is not a lord to act for, so Ketu falls to its sign lord, the Sun: the 7th lord, placed in a trine in a friendly sign, with Ketu 3rd from it, not 6th, 8th or 12th. No benefic joins Ketu, so on the shared sutra this chart falls on its default branch; Ketu is in Leo, not Scorpio, so Chamatkar Chintamani's exception does not apply; and with no trine or angle lord joining or aspecting Ketu, the Yoga Karaka condition of Sl. 17 is not met. The Sun's own place in the 5th is not an aspect on Ketu.

The engine prints the row as "classically more testing, tending toward real emotional distance in marriage under affliction" and the Mahadasha as testing, graded neutral. The Moon in Mrigashira, a Mars nakshatra, puts Ketu's Mahadasha late, from 2 September 2064 to 3 September 2071, with Ketu's early degree placing its results toward the end under the reversed decanate rule. Its first sub-period, Ketu's own, meets both clauses of Ch. 59: the kendra clause of Sl. 1-2 and the 7th-house clause of Sl. 5-6. The chart says nothing about any actual marriage; it shows which conditions the texts test.

Checking a Ketu in the 7th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the birth time: Ketu's sign barely depends on it, its house entirely (what a missing birth time costs). Within two degrees of a sign boundary, the mean or true node can decide the sign.
  2. List any planet in the 7th with Ketu; by the agent rule its lordships are what Ketu mostly delivers. A benefic there is the sutra's own condition for the softer reading. Failing that, list the planets aspecting it; failing both, read the lord of the 7th, and note whether Ketu is 6th, 8th or 12th from it.
  3. Check Ketu's sign against the table: Scorpio is the Chamatkar Chintamani exception.
  4. Test Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator against the groups above, and the lord's strength in the Shad Bala calculator, which has no row for Ketu itself.
  5. Read the other end of the axis in Rahu in the 1st house, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
Does Ketu in the 7th house mean two marriages?
The shared Bhrigu sutra says so as its default and then gives one marriage when a benefic is in conjunction with the node, which happened in about 26 per cent of the charts in our sweep. It is a classical line about either node, not a forecast, and this app makes no prediction about anyone's marriage.
Is there a line written for Ketu alone?
Two, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them on p. 112: Phaladeepika (humiliation, separation and two further clauses) and Chamatkar Chintamani (loss of wealth and illness in the family, with an exception for Scorpio).
Is Ketu in the 7th better in some signs?
Chamatkar Chintamani reads it as "always happy" in Scorpio, which needs Taurus rising. Scorpio is also Ketu's exaltation in BPHS Ch. 47, Uttara Kalamrita and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. This app assigns Ketu no dignity in any sign.
Does BPHS agree with Phaladeepika on the spouse?
No. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 give Ketu's Dasha "happiness from wife" with Ketu in a kendra, which includes the 7th; Phaladeepika reads separation. The texts do not reconcile the two.
Ketu is with my 7th lord, not in the 7th. Does that matter?
In the Bhrigu Sutras, yes for Jupiter: a 7th-house Jupiter's good reading is reversed when the 7th lord is weak or with Rahu, Ketu, Saturn or Mars. By BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 a node also gives the effects of the lord it joins.
Why does the app call my Ketu in the 7th "classically more testing"?
Because the row's favourable wording needs a strong dignity, and the engine gives Ketu none in any sign. Every Ketu in the 7th gets the same sentence. Who joins and aspects your Ketu, which the texts treat as decisive, is something the row does not look at.
Is my Ketu in the 7th exalted or debilitated?
The texts do not agree. BPHS Ch. 47 exalts Ketu in Scorpio, Uttara Kalamrita (as the Bhrigu Sutras report it) adds a fall in Taurus, Sanketnidhi exalts it in Sagittarius, Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara gives Scorpio and Sagittarius, and a strong school gives the nodes no sign at all. This app follows the last and assigns Ketu no dignity.
What does Saravali say?
Nothing. Its house chapter has no node verses, and its node lines on cancelled evils name Rahu only.
