Planet in house

What the Bhrigu Sutras, the authorities they quote, BPHS, Saravali and two modern books say about Rahu in the ascendant, read from the texts themselves; where they disagree; why the app prints a testing line for the placement but a favourable line for the Rahu Mahadasha; and how to check your own chart.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

Rahu is not a body but a point, the Moon's ascending node, and it owns no sign in this app's tables. That matters more in the 1st house than anywhere else, because the 1st is the Lagna: the rising sign from which every other house is counted. With Rahu there, Ketu sits exactly opposite in the 7th, and the whole chart is read through an axis of two points rather than two planets. This page sets out what the classical and modern books in this app's library actually say about the placement, where they disagree, where they are silent, and what the app prints for it. For the node itself, start with Rahu in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 1st house (Tanu Bhava).

Where these citations come from

Every classical line on this page was re-read in the source text: the Bhrigu Sutras (Part II Ch. 8, pp. 109-115, and Part I p. 13), Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani, Uttara Kalamrita and Jataka Chintamani are not in the library; their lines appear here only as another book quotes them, and the page says which book. An earlier version of this page worked from second-hand summaries and shortened two lines; both are now given in full.

The house Rahu occupies here

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2 reads the following through the ascending sign: physique, appearance, intellect (the translation adds "the organ of intelligence, i.e. brain"), complexion, vigour, weakness, happiness, grief and innate nature. The list holds opposites on purpose; the house describes a person, and the condition of the house decides which side of each pair shows. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 call Tanu Bhava the house of the soul or self and give it the Sun as karaka. The 1st is a kendra (angle), and it is also counted with the 5th and 9th as a trine, the only house that is both.

Two classical rules decide how a node behaves there. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says Rahu and Ketu "give predominantly the effects" of the bhava lord they are joined with, or of the bhava they occupy. Sl. 17 adds that a node in a kendra, receiving the aspect of, or associated with, the lord of a trikona or a kendra, becomes a Yoga Karaka. The 1st is a kendra, so it is one of the four houses where that second rule can operate at all. Sl. 15, just before, warns that a kendra or trikona lord who also owns an evil house does not make a Raj Yoga by mere relation, so the lord doing the aspecting has to be checked too.

The general test for any house, BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16, applies as well: a bhava prospers when a benefic joins or aspects it, and suffers when its lord is with a malefic, fails to aspect it, or is with the lord of an evil house. Rahu is a malefic in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 and in this app's list, so a Rahu on the Lagna is itself one of the factors that test counts against the house, unless a benefic also reaches it. Ch. 12, the chapter on the effects of Tanu Bhava, never names Rahu; its Sl. 3-4 speak of malefics in or aspecting the Lagna in general, weighed against benefic aspect.

The Bhrigu sutra for the 1st, read in full

Part II Ch. 8 of the Bhrigu Sutras is titled "Effects of Rahu and Ketu in the Twelve Houses", and it opens with a translator's note that shapes everything after it. The author gives the same effects for Rahu and Ketu in each house, presumably, the note says, because the two are always seventh from each other; the other authorities give separate effects. So the sutra below is not a Rahu reading in particular. It is word for word the sutra a Ketu in the 1st receives, and the companion page on Ketu quotes the same text.

Sutras 1-4 (p. 109) contain three statements. The first concerns the native's wife and a stillborn child; it is reported here only as what the text says, and this app does not use it (the provenance of the app's own placement strings records it as dropped). The second is the sign condition: if Rahu or Ketu is in Aries, Taurus or Cancer, the native will be "kind hearted and fond of enjoyments". The third is an aspect condition: if the node is aspected by a malefic there will be marks on the face, to which the translator adds "probably of small pox". That last is a classical body association, not medical advice.

Notice what the sutra does and does not do. It names no wealth, no power and no travel for the 1st. Its one kindly clause depends wholly on the rising sign, and its other two clauses concern a child and the face. Everything people commonly attach to Rahu on the Lagna, ambition, an unusual presence, rapid rise, comes from elsewhere, if from the classical books at all.

The other views printed beside the sutra

Under "Other Views" the Bhrigu Sutras first record a silence: "Brihat Jatak and Saravali have not dealt with the effects of Rahu and Ketu in the various houses." Then they quote two authorities that, unlike the sutra, separate the nodes. These are the only node-specific 1st-house lines in the library.

Bhrigu Sutras Part II Ch. 8. Paraphrased except for the short phrases in the text. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are not in the corpus; these are their lines as the Bhrigu Sutras print them.

The earlier version of this page shortened Phaladeepika to "wealthy and powerful". That dropped two of its three clauses. The full line pairs wealth and power with a short life and with disease in the upper body. The short-life clause is a lifespan statement, which this app does not compute or interpret, and the disease clause is a classical association, not a diagnosis. They are named here because leaving them out made the line look wholly positive, which it is not.

Chamatkar Chintamani was also shortened. Its Rahu line has three parts: the native overcomes the power of enemies, yet stays under the influence of others, and stays detached despite many wives. The middle clause is the interesting one for a node that, by BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 and the Bhrigu commentary, acts for other grahas. A point that speaks with borrowed voices is read here as a person who is strong against opponents but not wholly their own master. The third clause is a statement about a polygamous household that belongs to its period and is reported, not applied.

Set beside the Ketu column, the split is plain. For Rahu both quoted authorities find strength of some kind, wealth and power, or victory over enemies, each hedged by a cost. For Ketu both are harsh with no balancing clause. The shared sutra is the same for both. Anyone reading Rahu and Ketu in the 1st as one placement is following the Bhrigu author; anyone separating them is following the authorities he prints.

Saravali: one line, and not a house reading

Saravali Ch. 30, "Effects of Planets in Bhavas", runs from the Sun to Saturn. A search of that chapter finds no mention of Rahu or Ketu at all, which agrees with the Bhrigu Sutras' remark that Saravali did not deal with the nodes by house. There is no Saravali house reading for Rahu in the 1st, and this page does not invent one.

Saravali does name Rahu on the ascendant in Ch. 12, "Evils Canceled at Birth". Sl. 10-11 say that Rahu in the ascendant identical with Aries, Taurus or Cancer "protects the native from the clutches of all evils", with the simile of a pleased king forgiving a crime. The chapter is a list of conditions that cancel the birth-time evils of the preceding chapters. The earlier version of this page called this line a "favourable case" for Rahu rising. That overstated it: the verse is about cancelling other afflictions, not about what Rahu in the 1st gives. Sl. 3-5 of the same chapter make a parallel claim for Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from the ascendant when benefics aspect it.

The overlap with the Bhrigu sutra is still striking. Two unrelated books single out the same three rising signs, Aries, Taurus and Cancer, for a Rahu in the 1st, one calling the person kind-hearted and the other calling the node protective. Neither explains the choice. BPHS gives no reason either, though Taurus and Aries recur in its scattered sign lists for Rahu: Rahu in the Sayan avastha brings wealth in Taurus, Gemini, Virgo or Aries (Ch. 45 Sl. 123-134), and Rahu's sub-period in Mercury's Dasha is good in Aries, Aquarius, Virgo or Taurus (Ch. 58 Sl. 47-49).

Which sign is Rahu strong in? Four answers

In the 1st house the sign Rahu occupies is the rising sign, so any dignity scheme for Rahu becomes a statement about which Lagnas carry a strong or weak node. The books do not agree on the scheme, and the disagreement is worth seeing laid out, because it decides whether the BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 exaltation reading ever applies to your chart.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara pp. 82-83Taurus and GeminiScorpio and SagittariusNot statedCapricorn
Rahu's dignities as each source gives them. This app follows none of them: its engine returns Neutral for Rahu in every sign.

For a Rahu in the 1st this means: a Taurus Lagna holds an exalted Rahu in three of the four schemes; a Gemini Lagna holds a moolatrikona Rahu in two and an exalted one in two; Aquarius, Virgo and Capricorn are own-sign Lagnas under different books; a Scorpio Lagna holds a debilitated Rahu in two schemes, and in BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 Scorpio is also one of the two Lagnas for which Rahu is named a Maraka. Taurus is the only rising sign that satisfies both the Bhrigu and Saravali sign condition and an exaltation reading.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara departs from BPHS in a second way. It gives Rahu aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from itself. From the 1st that would add the 3rd and 10th houses to the 7th. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 name special aspects only for Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and this app gives Rahu the 7th aspect alone, so on this site a 1st-house Rahu touches only the 7th. The same book's rule 10 (p. 142) agrees with BPHS Ch. 34 on method: the nodes, owning no houses, give results by position, association and the rulers of the houses they occupy. Of Rahu generally it says that if well placed he will bestow "power and material success".

Rahu speaks for others: the dispositor and the company

Because Rahu owns no sign in this app, its reading leans on other grahas. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary (pp. 114-115) records "a strong school of thought" that the nodes own no signs and act as agents: first for the planet they are conjoined with; if none, for the planet aspecting them; only when neither, for the lord of the house they occupy. In the 1st house that last fallback is the Lagna lord, the most important single graha in the chart. That is a feature unique to this house: Rahu's dispositor and the ruler of the whole chart are the same planet. A Lagna lord in a kendra or trikona, or with benefics, is the most favourable backdrop BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 describe for the body and its comforts; one with a malefic or in the 6th, 8th or 12th is the least.

  • Conjunction first. A graha sharing the 1st with Rahu is, by the commentary, the main voice of the node. A benefic there also meets the release in BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 and the benefic-association condition of Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39.
  • Aspect next. A graha whose aspect reaches the 1st takes the second place. Every graha in the 7th aspects the 1st, and Ketu is always in the 7th, so the 1st is always aspected by at least one malefic. Mars from the 10th, 6th or 7th, Jupiter from the 5th, 9th or 7th, and Saturn from the 11th, 4th or 7th also reach it.
  • Yoga Karaka. If a trikona lord (5th or 9th) or a kendra lord joins or aspects Rahu here, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 makes Rahu a Yoga Karaka. The Lagna lord is itself both, so a Lagna lord aspecting its own house from the 7th meets the rule on its face. So does the 7th lord in the 1st, or the 10th lord in the 7th.

Uttara Kalamrita's rules, as the Bhrigu Sutras give them

The same commentary recommends Kalidasa's Uttara Kalamrita and summarises three of its points. Read for a Rahu in the 1st they come to this.

  1. A node "if endowed with strength" gives effects like the planet owning the house it occupies or the planet it joins. For the 1st, that is the Lagna lord unless something shares the house.
  2. One node with a trikona lord in the 9th or 10th, or the nodes split between the 9th and 10th, gives prosperity, and a node conjoined with a trikona lord is beneficial anywhere. A 1st-house Rahu never meets the first form, since Ketu is then in the 7th; it meets the second if the 5th or 9th lord sits in the 1st with it. The Lagna lord counts as a trikona lord here, as the 1st is counted among the trines.
  3. The nodes become auspicious in a kendra or trikona, or when joined with the lord of the kendra or kona they occupy, or with any kendra or kona lord. The 1st is both, so a Rahu here starts on the auspicious side of this rule, and Rahu with the Lagna lord in the 1st meets it twice. The text then withdraws the auspiciousness if the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th. By whole-sign arithmetic that happens for two Lagnas: Gemini, whose 9th lord Saturn also owns the 8th, and Libra, whose 9th lord Mercury also owns the 12th.

Ketu opposite, and the single aspect

BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give every graha a full aspect on the 7th from itself and reserve special aspects for Saturn, Jupiter and Mars; Rahu is not named. This app gives Rahu only the 7th aspect. From the 1st that lands on the 7th house, exactly where Ketu is, so the two nodes aspect each other and any graha in either house is aspected by both. The 7th-house side of the axis is covered on Ketu in the 7th house, and the reverse arrangement on Rahu in the 7th house. Because the Bhrigu sutra is shared, the sutra for the 7th applies to that Ketu exactly as the 1st-house sutra applies to this Rahu.

Since the engine counts both nodes as malefics, the axis affects three calculations. In the yogas calculator, Adhi Yoga and Amala Yoga need a benefic free of malefic conjunction and aspect, so a benefic in the 1st or 7th never qualifies; Kemadruma needs an unaspected Moon, so it cannot form with the Moon on the axis. In the Shad Bala calculator, a graha in the 1st scores 0 of 3 for aspects if only malefics reach it, 1.5 if a benefic does too. Rahu itself has no Shad Bala row; BPHS Ch. 27 works the six strengths for the seven grahas only.

How this app reads Rahu in the 1st

The engine has no dignity entry for the nodes, so it returns Neutral for Rahu in every sign. That single fact produces two readings for this house that look contradictory and are not. On the Kundali page the planet-in-house line needs an exalted, moolatrikona, own or friendly sign. Rahu never has one, so it always gets the testing line: "restlessness and an identity built on external validation under affliction". The favourable line written for this house, a bold, unconventional presence "genuinely auspicious when Rahu sits in a Kendra or Trikona per classical rules", exists in the code but is never shown, because no Rahu can pass the dignity test.

The Mahadasha reading applies BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6: a Dasha lord in the Lagna, or in exaltation, own or a friendly sign, is favourable. For Rahu the dignity half can never pass, which leaves the Lagna half. So the 1st is the one house in which this app labels a Rahu Mahadasha favourable, with the theme "unconventional gains, ambition realised through foreign or unfamiliar channels, and material advancement". The separate quality label reads neutral, never good, because good needs exaltation, moolatrikona or own sign. In a sweep of 4,000 New Delhi charts from 1950 run for this page, all 331 with Rahu in the 1st got the testing placement line, the favourable Dasha line and the neutral quality.

So a chart with Rahu in the 1st shows a testing placement line and a favourable Dasha line side by side. Neither is a finding about your Rahu. Both are the bare rule applied to a graha the engine cannot grade. The fuller conditions, the sign test of the Bhrigu Sutras and Saravali, benefic company, the Yoga Karaka rule and Uttara Kalamrita's conditions, are not coded and have to be checked by hand.

Timing: the Mahadasha

Rahu's Vimshottari period is 18 years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 name the 1st (Tanu) first in a list of houses, with the 4th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 3rd, where a Rahu joined or aspected by benefics and in a benefic's sign brings comforts through government favour, wealth through a foreign government or sovereign, and felicity at home. Ch. 21 Sl. 3 adds, in the chapter on the 10th house, that a Rahu in an angle or a trine will perform religious sacrifices like Jyotishtoma, and the 1st is both. Sl. 40-43 of Ch. 47 give the reverse case, Rahu with a malefic or a Maraka graha or debilitated: loss of position and home, mental agony, trouble to the family, with loss at the start of the period, some relief and gain in one's own country in the middle, and anxiety at the end. Which applies depends on company, not on the house alone. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates, and the Rahu Mahadasha page covers the nine sub-periods.

A timing rule in Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 is easy to miss. A graha gives its Dasha results at the start, middle or end according to which third of its sign it occupies, reversed for a retrograde graha, and the text says the nodes, "always retrograde", are always realised in reverse. So a Rahu in the first ten degrees of the rising sign is read as delivering at the end of its 18 years, one in the last ten degrees at the start.

BPHS also lists the 1st in a quite different category. Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 name the nodes in the 1st, 7th, 8th or 12th among the Maraka placements, and name Rahu a Maraka for Capricorn and Scorpio Lagnas. The Maraka category belongs to longevity reckoning. This app does not calculate or state lifespan, and the label is named here only so the record is complete. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20, the chapter's summary of unfavourable Dashas, adds in brackets that the nodes do well in the 3rd, 6th and 11th; the 1st is not in that bracket.

One more BPHS rule belongs to a different Dasha system. Ch. 50 Sl. 51-52, in the chapter on Char and other rashi Dashas, say the natural significations of the bhava Rahu occupies are harmed at the commencement of the Dasha. For a 1st-house Rahu that bhava is the body and the self. The rule is written for those sign-based periods, not for Vimshottari, and this page does not transfer it.

Sub-periods: what BPHS says for a Rahu in an angle

The Antardasha chapters (Ch. 52-60) give house conditions for Rahu's sub-period inside each Mahadasha. Most count from the Lagna; some from the Mahadasha lord; a few allow either. Read for a Rahu in the 1st, that is in a kendra and a trikona from the Lagna, they give the table below. The chapters also prescribe remedial measures, which this app does not prescribe.

BPHS Ch. 52-60, Rahu Antardasha in each Mahadasha. Paraphrased. The Moon chapter is the one that reverses the usual angle-is-good reading.

Two patterns run through these chapters. The angle and trine conditions mostly favour a 1st-house Rahu, with a delay or a bad start built in, and the Moon's chapter alone reads the angles as good first and troubled later. Separately, almost every chapter treats the 2nd and 7th as houses of physical distress for Rahu and the 8th and 12th as adverse; a 1st-house Rahu is in none of these from the Lagna, though some chapters count 8th and 12th from the Mahadasha lord, which has to be checked chart by chart.

Two modern readings

S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (2000) is the one modern book in the library that touches this placement. On p. 88 it quotes Jataka Chintamani: if Rahu is in the 1st, 7th or 12th, the native goes abroad. On p. 91 it gives two related timing rules: the Vimshottari dasa of Rahu or of the 12th lord tends to bring foreign journeys, and "the dasa of the planet whose 10th house is occupied by Rahu, can generate foreign travel". For a Rahu in the 1st, the planet whose 10th is the 1st is any planet in the 4th house, so on this rule the period of a 4th-house planet is one to watch for travel.

The same book's list of rules for good and bad periods (p. 124) adds two cautions that bear on a Rahu in the 1st. Rule 13: a planet in close company with Rahu or Ketu gives poor results in its own dasa, worse the closer the orb, which matters for any graha sharing the rising sign within a few degrees of Rahu. Rule 22, partly damaged in the scan: nodes in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositors give very bad results. Counted for this house, Rahu is 6th from its dispositor when the Lagna lord sits in the 8th house, 8th when it sits in the 6th, and 12th when it sits in the 2nd. These are one author's working rules from case study, not classical slokas, and the page labels them so.

A worked chart

We ran the engine for 10 March 1995, 21:00 IST, New Delhi. Libra rises at 0.38 degrees, and Rahu is at 14.34 Libra in Swati pada 3, in the 1st house. Ketu is at 14.34 Aries in the 7th. Rahu's dispositor is Venus, which here is also the Lagna lord; Venus is at 15.31 Capricorn in the 4th, a kendra. Mars, retrograde and debilitated in Cancer in the 10th, aspects the 1st by its special 4th aspect, and Ketu aspects it from the 7th. No benefic joins or aspects Rahu. A re-run on the current engine gave the same figures as the earlier run.

  • Placement line: Neutral in Libra, favourable false, the testing sentence for the 1st.
  • Mahadasha line: favourable true, because Rahu is in the 1st; quality neutral.
  • Dates: the Moon is at 9.11 Gemini in Ardra, a Rahu nakshatra, so this chart is born in Rahu's Mahadasha, with the balance running to 20 November 2009; Jupiter follows to 20 November 2025, then Saturn to 19 November 2044.
  • Kaal Sarp: not present.

Checked by hand against the sources. Libra is not one of the Aries, Taurus or Cancer signs of the Bhrigu sutra and Saravali Ch. 12, so neither the kind-hearted clause nor the protection line applies. Rahu is aspected by two malefics, Mars and Ketu, which meets the sutra's facial-marks condition on its face; that is a classical association, reported, not predicted. The Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 favourable case wants benefic association, and there is none. The dispositor, Venus, sits in a kendra, the better side of the Ch. 34 Sl. 16 reading, and Rahu is 10th from it, not 6th, 8th or 12th, so Chatterjee's rule 22 does not apply.

The Yoga Karaka test gives a result the earlier version of this page missed. Mars, which aspects Rahu, rules Aries, the 7th house for Libra rising, a kendra. A kendra lord aspecting a node in a kendra is the BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 condition on its face. Mars also rules Scorpio, the 2nd, which is not one of the evil houses Sl. 15 discounts, though the 2nd and 7th are the Maraka houses. Then Uttara Kalamrita's withdrawal clause bites: for Libra the 9th lord, Mercury, also owns the 12th, which by the text spoils the auspiciousness of the node's yoga. One chart, two rules in opposite directions; the books do not say which wins.

For timing, Rahu at 14.34 degrees is in the middle third of the sign, so by Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 its results fall in the middle of the period. That Rahu Mahadasha was already running at birth, and its middle years came in childhood. The current Saturn Mahadasha holds a Rahu sub-period; Ch. 57 Sl. 65-67 give gains at its start when Rahu is in a kendra from the Lagna, as here. Venus, the planet in the 4th, is the planet whose 10th house holds Rahu, so Chatterjee's p. 91 rule points at the Venus Mahadasha from 2068. The app's favourable Dasha label is the house rule alone; the hand check is mixed.

Checking Rahu in your own 1st house

  1. Cast the chart in the birth chart calculator with an exact time. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so the house depends on the time; the Lagna calculator shows how close the ascendant is to a sign boundary.
  2. Note the sign. Aries, Taurus or Cancer meet the sign condition in the Bhrigu Sutras and Saravali; compare it with the four dignity schemes above.
  3. Find the Lagna lord, which is also Rahu's dispositor. Note its house and company, and whether Rahu is 6th, 8th or 12th from it.
  4. List what joins the 1st and what aspects it. A benefic among them meets the release in Ch. 44 and the condition in Ch. 47; a trikona or kendra lord meets the Yoga Karaka rule, and Uttara Kalamrita's 9th-lord clause has to be checked for Gemini and Libra Lagnas.
  5. Note Rahu's degree for the Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 timing, then read the dates and the sub-period table.
Is Rahu in the 1st house good or bad?
The sources do not give one answer. The shared Bhrigu sutra is kind only in Aries, Taurus or Cancer. Phaladeepika, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, pairs wealth and power with a short life and upper-body disease; Chamatkar Chintamani pairs victory over enemies with dependence on others. BPHS makes the result depend on Rahu's company and on the Lagna lord.
Why does the app say testing for the placement but favourable for the Dasha?
Both come from Rahu having no dignity in the engine. The placement line needs a strong dignity, which Rahu never has. The Dasha line accepts the Lagna instead of dignity, so the 1st is the only house where it reads favourable.
Does Saravali describe Rahu in the 1st house?
Not in its house chapter, Ch. 30, which never mentions the nodes. Its one relevant line is in Ch. 12, "Evils Canceled at Birth", Sl. 10-11: Rahu rising in Aries, Taurus or Cancer protects the native from all evils. That is about cancelling other afflictions, not a reading of Rahu in the 1st.
Is the Bhrigu sutra for Rahu in the 1st different from Ketu's?
No. The translator notes that the author gives the same effects for both nodes in every house. Only the other authorities printed beside the sutra, Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani, give Rahu and Ketu separate lines.
What does Ketu in the 7th add?
It is always there when Rahu is in the 1st. The two aspect each other, so the 1st and 7th are each touched by both nodes. See Ketu in the 7th house.
Can Rahu in the 1st become a Yoga Karaka?
By BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17, yes, if the lord of a kendra or trikona joins or aspects it, subject to Sl. 15 on lords who also own evil houses. Uttara Kalamrita, as quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras, withdraws the benefit when the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th, as for Gemini and Libra rising. The app does not test these rules.
Does Rahu in the 1st mean travel abroad?
Jataka Chintamani, as Chatterjee quotes it (Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II p. 88), says Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th takes the native abroad. That is one rule from one book, not a BPHS sloka, and it is not coded in the app.
Is this the same as Kaal Sarp?
No. Kaal Sarp is about whether all seven grahas fall on one side of the axis, wherever the axis lies. The Kaal Sarp calculator checks it, and the Kaal Sarp article explains what it does and does not claim.
