What the Bhrigu Sutras, Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and BPHS say about Rahu in the 7th house, why the shared marriage sutra turns on a benefic, the Yoga Karaka rule for a node in a kendra, the Dasha and sub-period rules, and how the app reads the placement.

The 7th is a kendra and the house of partnership: marriage, trade and travel. With Rahu there, Ketu is on the Lagna, so the axis runs straight through the self and the other. Rahu, the Moon's ascending node, owns no sign and has no dignity in this app, so it is read through the house and its company. This page collects what the classical books say, where they are conditional, where they disagree, and what the app prints. For the node, see Rahu in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 7th house (Yuvati Bhava).

Where these citations come from

Every classical line here was read in the books themselves: the Bhrigu Sutras (R. Santhanam's translation, with the Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines it prints under "Other Views"), Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS, G. C. Sharma's translation), Saravali, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani, Uttara Kalamrita and Jataka Chintamani are not on our shelf on their own; they are cited as the book that quotes them prints them. Lines about spouses' bodies and conduct are described, not quoted, and remedies the texts prescribe are left out.

The house Rahu occupies here

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 8 gives the 7th as "Wife, travel, trade, loss of sight, death etc." Only one of the five is marriage. The Bhrigu Sutras' own introduction (Part I, p. 15) widens it to union and legal bonds, a partner in life or in business, and influence in foreign countries. It is a kendra, so both favourable node rules can apply: BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17, which makes a node in a kendra a Yoga Karaka when joined or aspected by a kendra or trikona lord, and the Uttara Kalamrita point, printed in the Bhrigu Sutras' closing comments (p. 115), that the nodes "become auspicious" in a trikona or kendra. BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 also name the 7th among the Maraka placements for a node, a longevity label this app does not compute.

Ch. 34 Sl. 16 sets the base rule: Rahu and Ketu give "predominantly" the effects of the bhava lord they join, or of the bhava they occupy. The Bhrigu Sutras' comments (p. 115) set an order of their own: the planet the node is conjoined with first, the planet aspecting it second, and the lord of the sign it occupies only when it is neither joined nor aspected.

The Bhrigu sutra for the 7th, in full

The Bhrigu Sutras' chapter on the nodes (Part II, Ch. 8) opens with a translator's note: the author gives the same effects for Rahu and Ketu in every house, presumably because they are always seventh to each other, while "the other authorities" give separate effects. So Sutras 17-21 on p. 112 are the text for Rahu in the 7th and, word for word, for Ketu in the 7th. Read whole, the block makes four statements.

  1. Two marriages, as the default.
  2. A clause about the first spouse's death and an illness of the second. This is the harshest line in the block, it is unconditional as printed, and it is reported here only as what the text says.
  3. With a malefic joined to the node, a disease the text calls "Ganda mala", and the explicit release: this "will not happen" with a benefic.
  4. The summary: "generally" two marriages, but only one if the node is in conjunction with a benefic.

Two of the four statements turn on the same test, malefic or benefic company, and the sutra spells out both branches. It also means the line most often repeated about this placement, "more than one marriage", is half a sentence: the same sutra gives one marriage when a benefic joins the node. Nothing in the block says how strong the benefic must be, whether a waning Moon counts, or whether an aspect does the work of a conjunction; the word used is conjunction. Ganda mala is the text's name for an illness, reported as a classical association and not medical advice.

Other Views: the lines written for Rahu alone

Under "Other Views" the Bhrigu Sutras print the 7th-house lines of two other works, separately for each node. These are the only classical lines in our sources written for Rahu in the 7th and not shared with Ketu.

  • Phaladeepika, as quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras (p. 112): Rahu gives "independent nature" and a loss of wealth through association with women; the same line adds widowhood and a loss of virility. The earlier version of this page kept only the first half.
  • Chamatkar Chintamani, as quoted there: for Rahu, one clause, the loss of the wife. The earlier version of this page said no such line was reported; it is printed on p. 112.

Set beside Ketu's lines on the same page, the difference is in scope. Ketu's Phaladeepika line speaks of humiliation, separation and intestinal trouble, and Ketu's Chamatkar Chintamani line carries a sign exception, Scorpio, under which the native "will always be happy". Rahu's lines carry no condition at all: no sign, no company, no strength. The only conditions for Rahu in the 7th in the Bhrigu chapter are the shared sutra's benefic and malefic clauses.

Jataka Chintamani, via Chatterjee Vol. II p. 88Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th: the native "goes abroad"
Read in the corpus, 2026-10-09. Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Jataka Chintamani are cited as quoted by the Bhrigu Sutras and by Chatterjee. Paraphrased except where quoted.

The three Bhrigu-page lines agree on a theme, strain on the marriage side, and differ on everything else. The shared sutra counts marriages and turns on company; Phaladeepika describes temperament and money; Chamatkar Chintamani gives a single outcome. None of them is a forecast, and the shared sutra is the only one that tells you what to look for in a chart.

BPHS treats the 7th in three different places, and they answer different questions. Ch. 47 puts it among the good houses for the overall quality of Rahu's Dasha. Ch. 44 counts it a Maraka placement, which is a longevity question. Ch. 55 flags Rahu's own sub-period with Rahu in the 2nd or 7th. The text does not reconcile them and this page does not either; a chart can meet all three at once.

The travel thread is the one positive line that recurs. Chatterjee cites Jataka Chintamani for going abroad with Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th; the BPHS Rahu Dasha passage names wealth through a foreign government or sovereign; and the 7th itself carries travel and trade in Ch. 11 Sl. 8. BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 3 adds a religious line that is easy to miss because it sits in the 10th-house chapter: if Rahu is in an angle or a trine, the native "will perform religious sacrifices, like Jyotishtoma". The 7th is an angle, so the line covers it.

Where Saravali is silent

Saravali's chapter on planets in the houses (Ch. 30) has no verse for Rahu or Ketu in any house; a search of the chapter for either name returns nothing. Its only house-based Rahu lines are in Ch. 12, on evils cancelled at birth: Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th aspected by benefics, and Rahu in an Aries, Taurus or Cancer Ascendant. Neither names the 7th. Saravali therefore has nothing to say about this placement, and this page does not borrow a line from elsewhere to fill the gap.

The 7th-house chapter, read with Rahu in mind

BPHS Ch. 18, the chapter on the 7th, names the nodes once, in Sl. 7, in its list of what each graha in the 7th says about the people one associates with. The wording for Saturn and the nodes is pejorative and this page does not reproduce it. Several of the chapter's other tests take Rahu in their stride because they are written about malefics in general.

  • Sl. 16: evils to the spouse if the 7th house or its lord is joined by a malefic, "especially" if the house or lord lacks strength. Rahu counts as a malefic (Ch. 3 Sl. 11), so Rahu in the 7th touches the first half of this sloka; the second half, strength, decides how much weight it carries.
  • Sl. 4-5: a strong 7th lord joined or aspected by a benefic is read as wealthy, honourable, happy and fortunate. The 7th lord is Rahu's dispositor, so this sloka and Ch. 34 Sl. 16 look at the same planet.
  • Sl. 18: lack of marital happiness needs three conditions together, the Moon in the 7th, the 7th lord in the 12th and a weak Venus. Rahu is not one of them.
  • Sl. 19-21: BPHS's own rule for two marriages runs through the 7th lord in fall or in a malefic sign with a malefic. It does not name the nodes, so the Bhrigu sutra's two-marriage line has no BPHS counterpart.
  • Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Venus the karaka of the 7th, so Venus's condition matters whoever occupies the house.

Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 add a limit on Yoga Karakas: a graha merely sitting in the Lagna, the 4th or the 7th without own, exalted or friendly dignity does not become one. That rule is about the seven grahas in mutual angles, not the nodes, whose own route is Ch. 34 Sl. 17 below.

Rahu speaks for others: the dispositor and the Yoga Karaka rule

The lord of Rahu's sign is the 7th lord, so a lone Rahu in the 7th points at the planet that rules partnership. A 7th lord in a kendra or trikona is the better backdrop; one in the 6th, 8th or 12th the weaker. Chatterjee adds a modern rule in the same spirit (Vol. II, pp. 123-125, aphorism 22): nodes in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositor give bad results. For Rahu in the 7th that means a 7th lord in the 2nd, the 12th or the 8th house of the chart.

  • A benefic joined with Rahu in the 7th meets the Bhrigu Sutras' single-marriage condition, cancels the sutra's illness clause, meets the Ch. 47 association condition and lifts the Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 difficulty clause, all at once.
  • Ketu is always on the Lagna and aspects the 7th, so Rahu here is never wholly unaspected.
  • If the lord of a kendra (1st, 4th, 10th) or a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) joins or aspects Rahu, Ch. 34 Sl. 17 makes Rahu a Yoga Karaka. A graha in the 1st aspects the 7th, so the Lagna lord rising would meet it; so would any graha whose special aspect reaches the 7th.
  • Ch. 34 Sl. 15 adds a caution: a kendra or trikona lord that also owns an evil house does not make a Raj Yoga by those relations alone. Check what else the aspecting lord rules.

Uttara Kalamrita's three points, applied to the 7th

The Bhrigu Sutras close the chapter by recommending Uttara Kalamrita and summarising three of its points (p. 115). Each can be applied to a node in the 7th.

  1. Nodes "if endowed with strength" give effects like the planet owning the house they occupy or the planet they join. For Rahu in the 7th, a lone node reads like the 7th lord.
  2. A node with a trikona lord in the 9th or 10th, or one node in the 9th and the other in the 10th, causes prosperity. Neither node is in the 9th or 10th here, but the point adds that even a conjunction of either node with a trikona lord "will prove beneficial", which a 7th-house Rahu can meet.
  3. The nodes become auspicious in a trikona or kendra, or associated with the lord of the kendra or kona they occupy. For Rahu in the 7th, that lord is the 7th lord itself: the 7th lord joining Rahu in its own house is the textbook case. The yoga is "lost" if the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th.

Which sign Rahu holds in the 7th, and why the books disagree

In whole-sign houses the 7th sign from the Lagna is the 7th house, so the rising sign fixes Rahu's sign. The books do not agree on Rahu's signs. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 exalt Rahu in Taurus, give it Gemini as moolatrikona and Aquarius as its own sign, noting that "some sages" make Virgo its own. Uttara Kalamrita, as the Bhrigu Sutras report it (Part I, p. 13), agrees on Taurus, Gemini and Aquarius and puts its fall in Scorpio. Sanketnidhi, reported on the same page, exalts it in Gemini and makes Virgo its own. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 82-83) gives Capricorn as Rahu's sign, exaltation in Taurus and Gemini and debility in Scorpio and Sagittarius.

AquariusLeoSun-
PiscesVirgoMercuryOwn sign ("some sages" in BPHS; Sanketnidhi)
Whole-sign arithmetic plus the dignity schemes named in the paragraph above. This app applies none of them: it gives Rahu Neutral dignity in every sign.

Two rows deserve a second look. For Scorpio rising, Rahu in the 7th is in Taurus, exalted in three of the four schemes, and BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 give an exalted Rahu's Dasha wealth, conveyances, a new house and "recognition from Government of foreign countries". The same Lagna is one of the two for which Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 call Rahu a Maraka. The other is Capricorn rising, where Rahu in the 7th is in Cancer. The text states both rules and does not rank them.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara differs from BPHS in a second way that matters for this house: it gives Rahu aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th from itself. From the 7th, that would put Rahu's aspect on the 9th, the 1st and the 4th. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 reserve special aspects for Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and this app follows BPHS, so it gives Rahu the 7th aspect only. If you read with JSS, a 7th-house Rahu also touches the house of fortune and the house of home. JSS adds a general rule (p. 142, rule 10) close to the Bhrigu comment: the nodes give results by position, association and the lord of the house they occupy. It has no per-house reading for Rahu.

Ketu on the Lagna and the single aspect

On the BPHS reading, Rahu's aspect from the 7th lands on the 1st, where Ketu is, and Ketu's lands back on the 7th. The Lagna side of this axis is on Ketu in the 1st house, and the reverse arrangement on Rahu in the 1st house, the one house where the app reads a Rahu Mahadasha as favourable. Because the Bhrigu sutra is shared, Ketu in the 1st here carries Sutras 1-4, which open with a line about a stillborn child; the Ketu page deals with that sutra.

Both nodes count as malefics in the engine, so a graha in the 1st or 7th is aspected by both. That lowers its aspect score in the Shad Bala calculator, rules a benefic there out of Adhi and Amala Yoga in the yogas calculator, and stops Kemadruma with the Moon on the axis.

How this app reads Rahu in the 7th

The engine returns Neutral for Rahu's dignity in every sign. On the Kundali page that means the testing line: "real instability in close relationships under affliction". The favourable line written for the 7th, "an unconventional, magnetic partnership - genuinely auspicious in this Kendra per classical rules", reflects the kendra rule but cannot be reached, because it needs a strong dignity. In a sweep we ran of 4,000 New Delhi charts from 1950, Rahu was in the 7th in 336; the row read testing in all 336, and the Dasha line read testing with a neutral grade in all 336.

The Mahadasha line applies BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 and passes for Rahu only in the 1st, so in the 7th it reads testing, with the theme "instability, anxiety and outcomes that don't match the effort put in"; the quality label reads neutral. One feature does read the 7th directly: Career and Money counts Rahu in the 7th or 10th, or aspecting either, as one sign of unconventional or self-made work. The 7th is the house of trade in Ch. 11 Sl. 8, which is the link that feature draws on.

What the app does not test is what the books treat as decisive. In the same sweep, the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus shared the 7th with Rahu in 97 of the 336 charts, about 29 per cent: that is how often the shared sutra's one-marriage branch is met on the engine's list of benefics. The row is the same sentence either way.

Timing: the Mahadasha

For Rahu's 18-year Vimshottari period, BPHS gives several rules that touch the 7th. Dates come from the Vimshottari Dasha calculator; the sub-periods in order are on the Rahu Mahadasha page.

BPHS ruleWhat it saysFor Rahu in the 7th
Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4Results by decanate; "always" reversed for Rahu and KetuLast ten degrees: early; first ten: late; middle stays middle
Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6Favourable in Lagna, exaltation, own or friendly sign; unfavourable in 6, 8, 12The 7th is in neither list
Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39With benefics, in a benefic sign, and in 1, 4, 7, 10, 11 or 3: comforts from government, wealth through a foreign sovereign, felicity at homeNamed, with three conditions
Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43With a malefic or a Maraka graha, or debilitated: loss of position and home; loss at the start, some gain in the middle, distress at the endApplies to company, not to the house
Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20Grahas with the 2nd or 7th lord in the 2nd or 7th unfavourable; "(Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in Sahaj, Ari and Labh)"The 7th is not one of the nodes' good houses here
Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24A node in the 1st, 7th, 8th or 12th is a MarakaNamed; a longevity label only
Ch. 50 Sl. 51-52 (rashi Dashas)The natural significations of the bhava Rahu occupies are harmed at the start of the DashaIn that system, the 7th's subjects; not a Vimshottari rule
Read in bphs.txt. Ch. 50 belongs to the sign-based Dashas, not to Vimshottari, which this app computes.

The table shows the tension plainly. Ch. 47 lists the 7th among Rahu's good houses on conditions; Ch. 48's bracket gives the nodes only the 3rd, 6th and 11th; Ch. 44 makes the 7th a Maraka placement. None of these cancels another in the text.

Sub-periods with Rahu in the 7th

The Antardasha chapters (BPHS Ch. 52-60) give Rahu's sub-period inside each Mahadasha a house condition. The pattern for the 7th is unusual: it is a kendra, which most chapters read well, and it is one of the two Maraka houses, which almost every chapter reads as distress. The text adds remedial measures to many of these clauses, which this app does not prescribe.

Rahu sub-period inKendra clause2nd/7th clause
Sun (Ch. 52 Sl. 23-31)Two difficult months, then comforts if Rahu is with beneficsAdverse; the text frames it in longevity terms
Moon (Ch. 53 Sl. 13-21)Some good at the start, then trouble; pilgrimage if kendra from the Dasha lordBody troubles
Mars (Ch. 54 Sl. 9-14)Recognition, house, son, gains in business, with beneficsThe text's harshest wording for the 7th, framed in longevity terms
Rahu (Ch. 55 Sl. 1-7)Good conditions name 3, 6, 10, 11 only"Distress and diseases"
Jupiter (Ch. 56 Sl. 72-80)Gains, distant journeys; also if aspected by a kendra lordPhysical distress
Saturn (Ch. 57 Sl. 65-70)Gains at the start if in a kendra or 11th from Lagna or Dasha lordPhysical distress if Rahu is with the 2nd or 7th lord
Mercury (Ch. 58 Sl. 47-53)Recognition and gains after some early troubleNo separate clause
Ketu (Ch. 59 Sl. 45-50)Gains; "some trouble at the commencement""Distress and danger"
Venus (Ch. 60 Sl. 36-41)Enjoyment, gains, "successful journeys"Physical distress only if Rahu is 2nd or 7th lord, which the app never makes it
Paraphrased from bphs.txt lines 6060-7687. Clauses that count Rahu from the Dasha lord rather than from the Lagna are left out.

In six of the nine chapters the same 7th-house Rahu meets a good clause and a distress clause at once. The distress clause is not specific to the nodes: nearly every Antardasha section in Ch. 52-60 has the same sentence for any graha that owns or occupies the 2nd or 7th, because those are BPHS's Maraka houses. Reading the 7th-house clause as a special verdict on Rahu misreads its source.

A modern reading: Chatterjee's lines that touch the 7th

S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (2000) is one modern author's collection, labelled as such here. Three of its lines touch a 7th-house Rahu.

  • p. 88: under Jataka Chintamani, "If Rahu is in the 1st/7th/12th", the native goes abroad. On p. 91 the author adds that the Dasha of Rahu, or of the 12th lord, is the most important factor for timing a foreign journey.
  • pp. 123-125, aphorism 13: a planet closely conjunct a node gives poor results in its own Dasha. This sits awkwardly beside the shared sutra, which wants a benefic joined to the node: the benefic that softens the marriage line is, on Chatterjee's rule, the planet whose own period suffers.
  • pp. 317-318: natal Rahu in the 2nd, 6th or 10th "generally gives good results" for service and profession if strong. The 7th is not on that list, and the same section's transit rule gives Rahu good results only through the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th.

Transit

In transit the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and its source gives the malefics no rule for the 7th from the Moon, so Rahu there is shown as classically unremarkable. Chatterjee's transit list agrees in effect: the 7th is not among his good transit houses for Rahu.

A worked chart

We ran the engine for 10 March 1995, 08:20 IST, New Delhi; every figure matched the earlier run of this page. Aries rises at 0.13 degrees, so Libra is the 7th. Rahu is at 14.37 Libra in Swati pada 3, in the 7th house; Ketu is at 14.37 Aries in Bharani pada 1, on the Lagna. Rahu's dispositor Venus, lord of the 2nd and 7th for Aries rising, is in Capricorn in the 10th, a kendra, with Mercury. Mars, the Lagna lord, is retrograde and debilitated in Cancer in the 4th and aspects the 7th by its special 4th-house aspect. Saturn in its own sign in the 11th aspects Ketu by its 3rd-house aspect. The Moon is in Gemini in the 3rd.

  • Placement line: Neutral, favourable false, the 7th-house testing sentence.
  • Mahadasha line: testing; quality neutral.
  • Dates: a Mars balance to 21 March 1997, then Rahu's Mahadasha to 21 March 2015.
  • Career and Money: Rahu in the 7th, so the unconventional-work signal is counted. Kaal Sarp: not present.

Checked by hand. On the Bhrigu order, Rahu is joined by nothing, so the aspecting planet comes next: Mars (Ketu also aspects it, but a node is not a lord). Mars is the Lagna lord, and the 1st is both a kendra and a trikona, so Mars aspecting Rahu in a kendra meets BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 for a Yoga Karaka. Two qualifications apply: Mars also owns the 8th, which is the kind of dual lordship Ch. 34 Sl. 15 warns about, and it is debilitated. Venus is at once Rahu's sign lord, the 7th lord of Ch. 18 Sl. 4-5 and the karaka of Ch. 32, so three separate rules point at it; it is in a kendra in a friendly sign, and Rahu is 10th from it, not 6th, 8th or 12th.

No benefic joins Rahu, so the shared sutra falls on its default branch and Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39's association condition is not met. Rahu at 14.37 degrees is in the middle third, which the reversal leaves in the middle. Rahu's period opened with Rahu's own sub-period, to which Ch. 55 Sl. 7 attaches its 2nd-and-7th clause. The ascendant is only 0.13 degrees into Aries: ten minutes earlier the chart has Pisces rising and Rahu in the 8th, so a rounded birth time would leave the house open.

The Lagna calculator shows how close an ascendant sits to a sign edge, which is the first thing to check before reading any node by house.

Checking Rahu in your own 7th house

  1. Cast the chart in the birth chart calculator and check the ascendant degree.
  2. List grahas joined with Rahu and those aspecting the 7th. A benefic joined to the node is the condition the Bhrigu sutra uses; benefic association is BPHS Ch. 47's.
  3. Work out your kendra and trikona lords and check whether one joins or aspects Rahu, and what else it owns.
  4. Find the 7th lord, Rahu's dispositor, and note its house, including whether Rahu falls 6th, 8th or 12th from it.
  5. Note Rahu's sign against the table above, remembering this app applies none of those dignities.
  6. Note Rahu's degree for the reversed Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 timing, then read the dates.
Does Rahu in the 7th mean more than one marriage?
The shared Bhrigu sutra gives two marriages "generally" and one when a benefic is in conjunction with the node. The line is conditional, it is written for both nodes, and this app makes no prediction about marriage.
Is there a line for Rahu in the 7th that is not shared with Ketu?
Yes, two, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them on p. 112: Phaladeepika (independence, loss of wealth through association with women, and two harsher clauses) and Chamatkar Chintamani (loss of the wife). Neither gives a condition.
Is Rahu in the 7th a Yoga Karaka?
It can be, by BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17, if a kendra or trikona lord joins or aspects it. The app does not test this rule.
Why does the app show testing?
Its favourable line needs a dignity the engine never gives Rahu, and its Dasha rule passes for Rahu only in the 1st. In our 4,000-chart sweep, all 336 charts with Rahu in the 7th got the testing line.
Is Rahu in the 7th linked to travel abroad?
Chatterjee cites Jataka Chintamani for going abroad with Rahu in the 1st, 7th or 12th, and BPHS Ch. 47 names wealth through a foreign sovereign for a well-associated Rahu Dasha. It is a classical association, not a forecast.
What does Saravali say?
Nothing about this placement. Its house chapter has no node verses, and its Rahu lines on cancelled evils name the 1st, 3rd, 6th and 11th.
What does Ketu in the 1st add?
It is always there when Rahu is in the 7th, and the two aspect each other. See Ketu in the 1st house.
Is this Kaal Sarp?
