Planet in house

What the Bhrigu Sutras, the authorities they quote, BPHS and two modern books say about Ketu in the 1st house, read from the texts themselves: one shared sutra that turns on the sign, two harsher Ketu-only views, four dignity schemes, the Yoga Karaka rule for nodes in angles, the sub-period conditions, and why the 1st is the only house where this app reads a Ketu Mahadasha as favourable.

A Ketu in the 1st house sits in the Lagna, the sign that was rising at birth and from which every other house is counted. Three things make the placement worth a page of its own. The 1st is an angle, where BPHS allows a node to become a Yoga Karaka. It is the only house in which this app's Mahadasha function can call a Ketu period favourable. And the texts on the placement itself are short and do not agree: one shared Bhrigu sutra that depends on the sign, and two quoted authorities that read Ketu there harshly with no condition attached.

This page describes rules, not a person. See also Ketu in Vedic astrology, the 1st house, Tanu Bhava and Rahu in the 7th house; the Birth Chart calculator shows your Ketu's house.

A note on sources

Every classical line here was re-read in the source text: the Bhrigu Sutras (Part II Ch. 8, pp. 109-115, and Part I p. 13), Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Phaldeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani, Uttara Kalamrita and Sanketnidhi are not in the library; their lines appear only as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. An earlier version of this page worked from second-hand summaries and shortened two lines; both are now given in full. Ketu is the thinner node in these books: the Bhrigu Sutras give both nodes one shared set of sutras, Saravali has no node-in-house verse, and the only 1st-house lines written for Ketu alone are Phaldeepika's and Chamatkar Chintamani's.

The 1st house in brief

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 4-6 call the rising sign the Lagn and say the native's good and bad effects are deduced from it and from the grahas joining and departing from each other. Its name Tanu Bhava means the house of the body, and BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make it the house of the soul or self, with the Sun as its karaka. It is a kendra, and it is counted with the 5th and 9th as a trine.

BPHS Ch. 12, the chapter on the effects of Tanu Bhava, never names Ketu, but it sets the frame for any malefic there. Sl. 1-2 tie bodily comfort to the Lagna lord: diminished with a malefic or in the 8th, 6th or 12th, steady in an angle or trine. Sl. 3 denies bodily health when the Lagna or the Moon is aspected by or joined with a malefic, "being devoid of a benefics Drishti", so the clause applies only when no benefic aspects the house. Sl. 4 says a malefic in the Lagna takes from good appearance. Ketu is on the malefic list in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 and on this engine's, so that weighing applies to it; Ch. 3 Sl. 30 says only that Ketu is "akin to Rahu".

The shared Bhrigu sutra for the 1st

Part II Ch. 8 of the Bhrigu Sutras covers "Rahu and Ketu in the Twelve Houses", and its first lines are a translator's note: the author gives the same effects for both nodes in every house, presumably because they are always seventh from each other, while other authorities give separate effects. The 1st-house sutra is therefore not a Ketu reading. It is word for word the sutra the companion page on Rahu in the 1st quotes.

Sutras 1-4 (p. 109) hold three statements. One concerns the native's wife and a stillborn child; it is named here only as what the text says, and the app's own placement strings record it as dropped. One is the sign condition: if Rahu or Ketu is in Aries, Taurus or Cancer, the native will be "kind hearted and fond of enjoyments". One is an aspect condition: a node aspected by a malefic gives marks on the face, which the translator glosses as "probably of small pox". That is a classical body association, not medical advice.

The aspect clause has an awkward consequence for Ketu in this app. The engine gives every graha a 7th aspect and counts Rahu as a malefic, and Rahu always stands in the 7th from Ketu. Counted that way, every 1st-house Ketu is aspected by a malefic. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 do not name the nodes in their aspect rules, so whether Rahu's 7th aspect counts is a choice, not a given. The sutra itself says nothing about it.

What the texts say about Ketu in the 1st

Under "Other Views", the Bhrigu Sutras first record that "Brihat Jatak and Saravali have not dealt with the effects of Rahu and Ketu in the various houses". Then they print Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani, each with separate lines for the two nodes.

Chamatkar Chintamani, quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras (p. 110)Troublesome to the members of his family; suffers from windy troublesDestroys enemies' power; under others' influence; detached despite many wives
Bhrigu Sutras Part II Ch. 8. Paraphrased except for the short quoted phrases. Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are not in the corpus; these are their lines as the Bhrigu Sutras print them.

The earlier version of this page cut Phaldeepika's Ketu line to "unhappy, in poor company, loses position" and Chamatkar Chintamani's to "a trouble to his family". The full lines add ingratitude, backbiting and an afflicted body to the first, and windy troubles, a classical humoral term, to the second. They are reported, not applied: a list of faults in a medieval verse is not a description of anyone with this placement, and the health terms are not medical advice.

The three readings do not describe the same placement in the same way. The Bhrigu sutra is conditional on the sign, and it is shared, so it is no more a Ketu reading than a Rahu one. Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are the only lines here written for Ketu in particular, and both are harsh without condition, where both give Rahu in the same house some strength. The Bhrigu commentary quotes Uttara Kalamrita the other way: the nodes turn auspicious in an angle or a trine, or joined with the lord of one. The 1st is both an angle and a trine.

Saravali adds nothing for Ketu. Its Ch. 30, on the grahas in the houses, does not mention either node. Its Ch. 12, "Evils Canceled at Birth", names Rahu in the ascendant in Aries, Taurus or Cancer (Sl. 10-11) and Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th (Sl. 3-5) as cancelling birth-evils, and never names Ketu. A Ketu in the 1st has Rahu in the 7th, which neither verse covers.

Two more lines touch this house. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 4, in the chapter on combinations for penury, says that if the Lagna or the Moon is with Ketu while the Lagna lord is in the 8th, the person will be penniless. It is one combination of several in that chapter, with two conditions that must hold together, and this app does not compute it. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 152) reads a Moon joined by Ketu as philosophically inclined and very secretive, with some agnosticism and a cynical, almost depressive attitude it traces to a lack of self-confidence. That applies here only when the Moon shares the 1st, and it is one modern author's view.

Which sign is Ketu strong in? Four answers

In the 1st house Ketu's sign is the rising sign, so a dignity scheme for Ketu becomes a statement about Lagnas. The books disagree.

Whole-sign arithmetic: Ketu in the 1st sign from each Lagna. Ashwini, Magha and Mula are Ketu's nakshatras in Vimshottari. The app applies none of the dignity notes.

Two cross-currents show in the table. Taurus rising is the one Lagna where the Bhrigu sutra calls the native kind-hearted while two of the four schemes call Ketu debilitated. Scorpio rising is the strongest Ketu by three schemes at once, yet the sutra says nothing kindly of it. JSS also gives Ketu aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th from itself, which from the 1st would add the 3rd and 10th houses; this app, following BPHS Ch. 26, gives Ketu only the 7th. JSS describes Ketu generally as standing for "hardships and isolation" and, if well placed, bestowing a "spiritual and meditative influence" that inclines towards renunciation. That is a statement about Ketu in any house, not about the 1st.

Rahu in the 7th: the other half of this placement

Ketu and Rahu stand at the same degree of opposite signs, so in this app's whole-sign houses a Ketu in the 1st always has Rahu in the 7th. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give every graha a full aspect on the 7th from itself and special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and the engine follows that. Ketu's single aspect therefore falls on the 7th, on Rahu, and Rahu's on the 1st, on Ketu. The two houses that frame the self and the other are held by the two nodes. Because the Bhrigu Sutras use one set of sutras for both nodes, the sutra for Rahu in the 7th is the same text as the sutra for Ketu in the 7th; Rahu in the 7th house takes that side, and Ketu in the 7th house the reverse axis.

Counted the other way, a Ketu in the 1st is aspected by any planet sitting with Rahu in the 7th, by Mars from the 6th or 10th house, by Jupiter from the 5th or 9th, and by Saturn from the 4th or 11th. Those are the grahas that, by the Bhrigu commentary's second step, Ketu acts for when nothing shares its house.

Whose agent is it? Ketu and the lord of the 1st

Ketu owns no sign in this app's tables. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give predominantly the effects of the bhava lord they join or of the bhava they occupy. The commentary closing the Bhrigu Sutras chapter (pp. 114-115) records "a strong school of thought" that the nodes own no signs and sets an order: a node acts for the planet it is conjoined with; failing that, for a planet aspecting it; only when neither, for the lord of the house it occupies. For the 1st that is the Lagna lord, the planet that rules the whole chart, so a Ketu alone and unaspected in the 1st reads through the chart's own ruler: where it sits, its sign and its strength. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's rule 10 (p. 142) says much the same: the nodes, owning no houses, give results by position, association and the rulers of the houses they occupy.

Because the 1st is an angle, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 also applies: a node in an angle, aspected by or associated with the lord of a trine or an angle, becomes a Yoga Karaka. Sl. 15 limits lords that also own an evil house, so the lord doing the aspecting has to be checked as well. The engine's Yoga Karaka panel follows the Lagna-by-Lagna list of Sl. 19-44, which names no node, so this test is done by eye. The Mars chapter of the sub-periods (Ch. 54 Sl. 50-51) adds its own bracket: Ketu assumes the role of a Yoga Karaka if joined with a Yoga Karaka graha, a lord of both a kendra and a trikona.

Uttara Kalamrita's three points, as the Bhrigu Sutras give them

  1. A node "if endowed with strength" gives effects like the planet owning the house it occupies or the planet it joins. For a 1st-house Ketu, that is the Lagna lord unless something shares the house.
  2. One node with a trikona lord in the 9th or 10th, or the nodes split between those two houses, gives prosperity, and a node conjoined with a trikona lord is beneficial anywhere. A 1st-house Ketu never meets the first form; it meets the second if the 5th or 9th lord sits in the 1st with it.
  3. The nodes become auspicious in a kendra or trikona, or with the lord of the kendra or kona they occupy, or with any kendra or kona lord. The 1st qualifies on both counts, and Ketu with the Lagna lord in the 1st meets the rule twice. The text withdraws the benefit if the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th. By whole-sign arithmetic that is Gemini rising, where Saturn owns the 9th and 8th, and Libra rising, where Mercury owns the 9th and 12th.

Ketu's Mahadasha from the 1st

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 71-77 open by calling Ketu a "headless trunk (Kabandha)" among the grahas and then sort his period by house. A Ketu in a kendra, a trikona or the 11th, in a benefic sign, exalted or in his own sign, gives cordial relations with the ruler, headship of a country or village, conveyances, happiness from children and wife, gain from foreign countries and cattle. A Ketu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives acquisition of a kingdom and good friends. The seven years are split into thirds: Raj Yoga at the start, fearfulness in the middle, ailments and distant journeys at the end. The 1st falls in the first group. Ketu Mahadasha sets out the period sub-period by sub-period, and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

The same slokas end with the adverse case: Ketu in the 2nd, 8th or 12th, "or receives a Drishti from a malefic", brings confinement, loss of kin and home, anxieties and illness. The 1st is not in that house list, but the aspect clause can reach it. Whether it does turns on the same question as the sutra's facial-marks clause: does Rahu's aspect from the 7th count? If it does, every 1st-house Ketu meets both the good and the bad condition, and the text gives no ranking between them. If only the seven grahas aspect, as BPHS Ch. 26 is written, the bad clause needs Mars, Saturn or the Sun to reach the 1st.

For the 1st, the general test of Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, which counts a Dasha lord in the Lagna as favourable, points the same way as the good group. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time a Dasha's results by the lord's decanate and say the nodes, "always retrograde", deliver in reverse: a Ketu in the last ten degrees of its sign delivers early in its period, one in the first ten late. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 add in a bracket that the nodes give favourable results in the 3rd, 6th and 11th; the 1st is not in it. Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 name the nodes in the 1st among the Maraka placements, a longevity label this app does not use; the Lagnas they name for a Maraka Rahu do not apply to Ketu.

Ketu's sub-periods: the conditions that reach the 1st

The Antardasha chapters (Ch. 52-60) give Ketu's sub-period a house condition inside each Mahadasha. The ones that a 1st-house Ketu can meet are below. Several name the Lagna lord, which matters here more than anywhere: in the 1st, the Lagna lord is also Ketu's dispositor, and if it joins Ketu in the 1st the condition is met outright. The chapters also prescribe remedial measures, which this app does not prescribe.

MahadashaBPHSCondition that can cover Ketu in the 1stWhat the text gives
SunCh. 52 Sl. 58-59Ketu with the Lagna lordSome happiness at the start, distress later; the general reading of this sub-period is hard
MoonCh. 53 Sl. 47-48Kendra, trikona or 3rd, with strengthGain of wealth and family happiness, after some loss at the start
MarsCh. 54 Sl. 48-49Kendra, trikona, 3rd or 11th, or benefic aspectFavour of the ruler, gains, little at first and more later
RahuCh. 55 Sl. 42Related to or with the Lagna lord; kendra or trikonaWishes fulfilled; gain of wealth with the Lagna lord; increase of cattle in an angle or trine
SaturnCh. 57 Sl. 16-19Related to the Lagna lord; kendra or trikona (Sl. 19)Evil "even if" well placed, but gains at the start when related to the Lagna lord
MercuryCh. 58 Sl. 6-8With benefics in a kendra or trikona, or with the Lagna lordFitness, honours, audience with the ruler, success in study
KetuCh. 59 Sl. 1-2Kendra or trikonaFamily happiness and recognition, but mental agony
VenusCh. 60 Sl. 67-68Exalted, own, related to a Yoga Karaka, or with positional strengthGains from the start; the translator notes no text says in which bhava Ketu has positional strength
BPHS Ch. 52-60, Ketu Antardasha. Paraphrased. The Jupiter chapter (Ch. 56 Sl. 32-34) names benefic association and the 6th, 8th and 12th from the Dasha lord, not a house from the Lagna.

The Venus line is worth a moment. The text offers "positional strength" as one route to a good Ketu sub-period, and the translator adds in brackets that it is not laid down anywhere in which bhava Ketu gets positional strength. The 1st is where some would look first, as the eastern angle, but the book declines to say so, and this page follows the book.

How this app reads Ketu in the 1st

Your Kundali row for Ketu turns favourable only for a planet exalted, in moolatrikona, own or friendly sign, and outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The engine returns Neutral dignity for Ketu in every sign, so every Ketu in the 1st gets one sentence: "classically more testing, tending toward detachment that reads as disinterest under real affliction". The favourable string for this house, "a spiritually inclined, self-contained presence - genuinely auspicious when Ketu sits in a Kendra or Trikona per classical rules", is in the code but unreachable. Read the row as the house's theme under affliction, not a finding about your Ketu.

The Mahadasha sentence is the one exception in the series. The function that grades a running Mahadasha passes a lord in the Lagna even without a strong dignity, so a Ketu in the 1st is the only Ketu the app reads as "a favourable placement for this Mahadasha", tending toward "detachment that pays off, sudden gains and a turn toward introspection or spiritual focus". Its three-level grade still reads neutral, because that grade looks only at dignity and the 6th, 8th and 12th. In a sweep of 4,000 New Delhi charts from 1950 run for this page, all 345 with Ketu in the 1st got the testing row, the favourable sentence and the neutral grade.

A transit is a different measurement. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, and with the malefic rule it applies to Ketu, transiting Ketu in the 1st sign from the Moon reads testing. Ketu takes about 18 months to cross a sign, moving backward.

A modern caution on the dispositor

Chatterjee's list of rules for good and bad periods (Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, p. 124) has two that bear on a 1st-house Ketu. Rule 13: a planet in close company with Rahu or Ketu gives poor results in its own dasa, worse the closer the orb; any graha within a few degrees of Ketu in the rising sign is the case. Rule 22, partly damaged in the scan: nodes in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositors give very bad results. For this house the dispositor is the Lagna lord, so Ketu is 6th from it when the Lagna lord is in the 8th, 8th from it when the Lagna lord is in the 6th, and 12th from it when the Lagna lord is in the 2nd. These are one author's working rules from case study, not classical slokas.

A worked chart

An illustrative birth, not a real person: 10 April 1989, 16:30 IST, New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E), computed in this app's engine and re-run on the current engine with the same figures. Leo rises at 28.25 degrees. Ketu is at 8.82 degrees of Leo, in Magha pada 3, one of its own nakshatras, in the 1st house; Rahu is at 8.82 Aquarius in the 7th. The Sun, lord of Leo and so of the Lagna, is at 26.85 Pisces in the 8th with Venus. The Moon, Mars and Jupiter are in Taurus in the 10th, Mercury in Aries in the 9th, Saturn in Sagittarius in the 5th.

No planet shares the 1st and none sits with Rahu, but Mars in the 10th casts its 4th-house aspect onto the 1st. By the Bhrigu Sutras commentary, then, this Ketu acts for Mars, which for Leo rising rules Aries, the 9th, and Scorpio, the 4th: the lord of a trine and an angle aspecting a node in an angle. On its face that is the Yoga Karaka condition of BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17, and neither of Mars's houses is one Sl. 15 would discount. Uttara Kalamrita's withdrawal clause does not bite either: Leo's 9th lord, Mars, owns the 4th, not the 8th or 12th.

The same chart meets three readings that point the other way. The two conditions of BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 4 hold: the Lagna lord, the Sun, is in the 8th while the Lagna holds Ketu. Chatterjee's rule 22 holds: counted from the Sun in the 8th, Ketu in the 1st is the 6th. And Mars is a natural malefic, so its aspect meets both the sutra's facial-marks clause and the "Drishti from a malefic" clause of Ch. 47 Sl. 71-77, before the question of Rahu's aspect even arises. Leo is not one of the sutra's three kindly signs. One chart, rules pointing opposite ways; the texts do not say which wins.

The engine prints Ketu's row as "classically more testing, tending toward detachment that reads as disinterest under real affliction". For the Mahadasha it prints the favourable sentence, because Ketu is in the Lagna, and grades it neutral. The Moon in Mrigashira, a Mars nakshatra, puts Ketu's Mahadasha late, from 3 November 2064 to 4 November 2071. With Ketu in the first ten degrees of Leo, the reversed decanate rule places its results toward the end of that period.

Checking a Ketu in the 1st in your own chart

  1. Confirm the birth time: Ketu's sign barely depends on it, its house entirely (what a missing birth time costs). Within two degrees of a sign boundary, the mean or true node can decide the sign.
  2. Note the rising sign against the sutra's Aries, Taurus and Cancer and against the four dignity schemes above.
  3. List any planet in the 1st with Ketu; by the agent rule its lordships are what Ketu mostly delivers. If the Moon is there, Chatterjee's Moon-with-Ketu remark applies. Failing that, list the planets aspecting it; failing both, read the lord of the 1st, and note whether Ketu is 6th, 8th or 12th from it.
  4. Test Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator against the groups above, and the Lagna lord's strength in the Shad Bala calculator, which has no row for Ketu itself.
  5. Read the other end of the axis in Rahu in the 7th house, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
Is Ketu in the 1st house good or bad?
The sources split: kind in three signs for the shared Bhrigu sutra, harsh for Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani, auspicious in an angle for Uttara Kalamrita, and a Yoga Karaka under BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 when a trine or angle lord joins or aspects it. Ketu's company decides more than the house.
Is the Bhrigu sutra for Ketu in the 1st the same as Rahu's?
Yes. The translator notes that the author gives the same effects for both nodes in every house. Only Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani, printed beside the sutra, give Ketu its own lines.
Why does the app call my Ketu Mahadasha favourable when the house row says testing?
They are two functions with two tests. The Mahadasha function passes any lord in the Lagna, following BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6; the house row needs a strong dignity, which Ketu never has in this engine. So a 1st-house Ketu gets the favourable Mahadasha sentence and the testing row together.
Does Ketu in the 1st house make a person spiritual?
Not in the 1st-house lines quoted here. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara says a well-placed Ketu, in any house, gives a spiritual and meditative influence, and the engine's unused favourable string speaks of a spiritually inclined presence that no chart can reach. The classical line on worship and liberation is a Jaimini condition on the 12th from the Karakamsa, explained in the Ishta Devata page.
Does Saravali say anything about Ketu in the 1st?
No. Its house chapter, Ch. 30, never mentions either node, and the Rahu-rising line in Ch. 12 is for Rahu alone. The Bhrigu Sutras note the same silence.
Why does the app call my Ketu in the 1st "classically more testing"?
Because the row's favourable wording needs a strong dignity, and the engine gives Ketu none in any sign. Every Ketu in the 1st gets the same sentence. Who joins and aspects your Ketu, which the texts treat as decisive, is something the row does not look at.
Is my Ketu in the 1st exalted or debilitated?
The texts do not agree. BPHS Ch. 47 and Uttara Kalamrita exalt Ketu in Scorpio, Uttara Kalamrita adds a fall in Taurus, Sanketnidhi exalts it in Sagittarius, and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara exalts it in both and debilitates it in Taurus and Gemini. A strong school gives the nodes no sign at all, and this app follows that, assigning Ketu no dignity.
