Planet in house

What the Bhrigu Sutras, Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani (as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them), BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita, Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara and a modern casebook say about Ketu in the 10th house, how BPHS times Ketu's Dasha and sub-periods from here, and how this app reads the placement.

The 10th house is Karma Bhava, the house of work, standing and authority, and the highest of the four angles. For Ketu it is the house where the sources disagree most directly. Uttara Kalamrita, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, says the nodes turn auspicious in an angle; BPHS puts the angles first in its list for a good Ketu Dasha; a modern casebook reads Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the 10th as a push toward cruel deeds; and the same casebook says Jupiter's aspect removes a 10th-house Ketu's blemishes. The shared sutra and the two Ketu-only lines sit between them, and both of those lines are mixed.

This page describes rules, not a person. See also Ketu in Vedic astrology, the 10th house, Karma Bhava, Rahu in the 10th house and Rahu in the 4th house; the Birth Chart calculator shows your Ketu's house.

A note on sources

Every classical line on this page was re-read in the source text: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) in its English translation, the Bhrigu Sutras with their translator's notes, Saravali, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (2000) and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (1994). Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Uttara Kalamrita are not in this app's library; their lines are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Ketu is the thinner node in these books: the Bhrigu Sutras give both nodes one shared sutra, Saravali has no node-in-house verse, and the only lines written for Ketu alone in the 10th are Phaladeepika's and Chamatkar Chintamani's.

The 10th house in brief

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 gives Karma Bhava "royalty (authority), place, profession (livelihood), honour, father, living in foreign lands and debts". Only three of the seven are what the house is known for today; the father, foreign residence and debts are Parashara's too. The father matters for Ketu in particular. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 118) makes Rahu the karaka for maternal relations and Ketu the karaka for paternal relations, so a 10th-house Ketu is a karaka of paternal relations sitting in a house that BPHS also gives the father. Chamatkar Chintamani's Ketu line, below, speaks of the father directly.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 116-117) puts the 10th among the kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) and the upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11), the houses of growth. Chatterjee (Vol. II p. 24) says the 10th should preferably hold a benefic, but that "even malefics are welcome in this house" because it is also an upachaya. Ketu is one of the malefics in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11, so that sentence covers it, though the same paragraph goes on to single Ketu out, as below.

The Bhrigu Sutras: Ketu shares Rahu's sutra

Chapter 8 of the Bhrigu Sutras opens with a translator's note: the author gives the same effects for Rahu and Ketu in each house, presumably because they always stand seventh from each other, while "the other authorities" give separate effects. The 10th-house block is headed "Rahu or Ketu in the Tenth House". So what the sutra says of Ketu here it says equally of Rahu, and the Rahu page quotes the same text.

Sutras 25-28 (p. 113) open with a line on the native's sexual conduct and on living in slums. The next sentence reverses the dwelling half: the native "will live in good places if Rahu or Ketu is associated with a benefic". The block closes with an interest in poetry. The earlier version of this page described the opening line only as a "poor reading of conduct and surroundings"; it is named a little more plainly here, and still not elaborated. The sutra does not define "associated"; BPHS usually lists association and aspect side by side, which suggests association means sharing the house.

The two Ketu-only lines

Phaladeepika, as quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras (p. 114), says the native with Ketu in the 10th "will indulge in sinful deeds but he will be famous for his courage". The earlier version of this page kept only the fame. Its Rahu line for the same house (p. 113) gives few children, no good deeds, and fearlessness and fame; the two nodes share the fame and the poor deeds, and differ on children.

Chamatkar Chintamani, quoted on p. 114, gives Ketu in the 10th: unfortunate, living in distress, no happiness from the father; and the native "will destroy his enemies if Ketu is in Aries, Virgo or Scorpio". The earlier version of this page reported only the last clause. Read in full, the line is unfavourable in general and favourable in three signs, and its father clause is the one place in these sources where the 10th's paternal meaning and Ketu meet in so many words. Its Rahu line for the 10th is different again: drink, cruel deeds, foreign company.

Where the sources disagree

Three readings pull in different directions. The favourable reading is structural: Uttara Kalamrita's point that the nodes become auspicious in a kendra, and BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77, which open their list of good Ketu Dashas with "a Kendr". The harsh reading is about conduct: Chatterjee's p. 24 sentence that "Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in 10th forces the native to participate in cruel deeds", Phaladeepika's sinful deeds, and the opening of the shared sutra. The conditional reading is the Bhrigu Sutras' benefic clause, Chamatkar Chintamani's three signs and Chatterjee's own Jupiter exception on p. 25.

Chatterjee's p. 25 paragraph is worth reading closely, because it is the most Ketu-specific modern passage in this library. It calls Ketu "a malefic planet not conducive to material pleasures" and says its combination with the 9th or 10th houses or their lords, together with a debilitated Saturn, damages the roots of a happy life. It then gives the exception: Jupiter's aspect on Ketu in these houses "removes all the blemishes of Ketu". His examples are all 9th-house Ketus, two of them aspected by Jupiter and admired, one aspected by Saturn and ending badly. The rule is stated for the 9th and 10th together; the cases test only the 9th.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara offers a fourth framing that is neither favourable nor harsh. It says Ketu "stands for hardships and isolation", and that when well placed it gives "a spiritual and meditative influence" and inclines one toward renunciation (pp. 83-84). It gives no house reading for Ketu, so the link to the 10th is not the book's own. It does explain why this app's favourable string for a 10th-house Ketu reads "quiet, behind-the-scenes influence or spiritually-aligned work" rather than worldly rise.

Rahu in the 4th: the other half of this placement

Ketu and Rahu stand at the same degree of opposite signs, so in this app's whole-sign houses a Ketu in the 10th always has Rahu in the 4th. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give every graha a full aspect on the 7th from itself and special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and the engine follows that. Ketu's single aspect therefore falls on the 4th, on Rahu, so the nodes hold the vertical axis, work at the top and home at the bottom. Because the Bhrigu Sutras use one sutra for both nodes, the sutra for Rahu in the 4th is the same text as the sutra for Ketu in the 4th; Rahu in the 4th house takes that side, and Ketu in the 4th house the reverse arrangement.

Counted the other way, a Ketu in the 10th is aspected by any planet sitting with Rahu in the 4th, by Mars from the 6th or 10th house counted from Ketu, by Jupiter from the 5th or 9th, and by Saturn from the 4th or 11th. In whole-sign terms that means Mars in the 3rd or 7th, Jupiter in the 2nd or 6th, and Saturn in the 1st or 8th house of the chart. Jupiter's three routes to a 10th-house Ketu, from the 4th, 2nd or 6th, are the ones that matter for Chatterjee's exception.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 83) gives Ketu aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from itself. From the 10th those would land on the 12th, the 4th and the 7th. This app does not use them, following BPHS; the two books disagree, and on the JSS scheme a 10th-house Ketu would also reach the house of partnership and the house of expenses.

Whose agent is it? Ketu and the lord of the 10th

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give "predominantly the effects" of the house lord they are joined with, or of the house they occupy. The comment closing the Bhrigu Sutras' node chapter (pp. 114-115) sets an order of voices: a node acts for the planet it is conjoined with; failing that, for a planet aspecting it; only when neither, for the lord of the sign it occupies. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 142, rule 10) says the same in one line. In whole-sign houses the lord of Ketu's sign is the lord of the 10th, the planet of work and standing.

Because the 10th is an angle, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 also applies: a node in a kendra, aspected by or associated with the lord of a kona or a kendra, becomes a Yoga Karaka. Sl. 15 adds that a kendra or kona lord which also owns an evil house does not cause Raj Yoga by mere relation, so the lord doing the touching has to be checked as well. BPHS repeats the point in Ketu's own terms in the Mars chapter (Ch. 54 Sl. 50-51): Ketu "assumes the role of a Yog Karak" when joined with a Yoga Karaka graha, the lord of a kendra and a kona.

The Bhrigu Sutras' summary of Uttara Kalamrita adds three points that apply to both nodes. Point (3): the nodes become auspicious in a trikona or kendra, or when associated with the lord of the kendra or kona they occupy, or joined with any kendra or kona lord; the yoga is spoiled if the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th. For Ketu in the 10th the position clause is met by the house alone, and the association clause asks whether the 10th lord sits with Ketu in its own sign. Point (2): a node with a trikona lord in the 9th or 10th brings prosperity, and even a node's conjunction with a trikona lord is beneficial. So Ketu in the 10th with the 5th or 9th lord is the good case in this source. Point (1) cuts the other way: a strong node gives results like the planet owning the house it occupies or joins, inauspicious owners included.

Sign conditions: dignity schemes and the three signs

The texts do not agree on Ketu's dignities. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 exalt Ketu in Scorpio, give Sagittarius as moolatrikona and Scorpio as own sign, and record that "some sages" make Pisces its own. Uttara Kalamrita, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it in Part I (p. 13), exalts Ketu in Scorpio with a fall in Taurus, gives Scorpio as own sign and Virgo as moolatrikona; Sanketnidhi, on the same page, exalts it in Sagittarius and gives it Pisces. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 83) makes Ketu lord of Aries, exalted in Scorpio and Sagittarius, debilitated in Taurus and Gemini. A strong school, the Bhrigu Sutras comment says, gives the nodes no sign at all, and this app follows that: Ketu is Neutral in every sign.

Two rising signs stand out. Aquarius rising puts Ketu in Scorpio in the 10th: exalted and in its own sign in BPHS, and one of Chamatkar Chintamani's three signs. Leo rising puts it in Taurus, its fall in two schemes. Cancer and Sagittarius rising meet Chamatkar Chintamani's enemies clause without any dignity agreement. BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 42 gives Ketu the four signs from Scorpio (Scorpio to Aquarius) in a rashi-dasha context; that chapter is about sign-based Dashas, not Vimshottari, and is noted only for completeness.

Ketu's Mahadasha from the 10th

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 71 introduce Ketu as "a headless trunk (Kabandha)", and Sl. 72-77 sort its Dasha by house. The 10th is in the first group, "a Kendr, a Trikon, or in Labh", listed with a benefic sign, exaltation and own sign as alternatives, whose results are cordial relations with the king, desired headship of a country or village, conveyances, happiness from children and wife, gain from foreign countries and cattle. The 3rd, 6th and 11th get a second list; the 2nd, 8th, 12th, or a malefic's aspect, the adverse one. The same passage times the seven years: Raj Yoga at the start, fearfulness in the middle, ailments and distant journeys at the end. Ketu Mahadasha sets out the period sub-period by sub-period, and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

Two other rules leave the 10th out. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 add, in brackets, that Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in Sahaj, Ari and Labh (3, 6, 11); the 10th is not in that list. Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, the general favourable and unfavourable test, name the Lagna and the 6th, 8th and 12th, and are silent on the 10th, so they do not conflict with Sl. 72-77. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time a Dasha by the lord's third of its sign and say the nodes, always retrograde, deliver in reverse order: a Ketu in the last ten degrees delivers early, one in the first ten late.

Ketu's sub-periods when Ketu is in the 10th

The Antardasha chapters set house conditions for Ketu's sub-period inside each Mahadasha. Some count from the Lagna and some from the Mahadasha lord; the table marks which. The text attaches remedial measures to the adverse cases, which this app does not prescribe.

VenusCh. 60 Sl. 67-69Gains from the start if exalted, own sign, related to a Yoga Karaka, or with positional strength
BPHS Antardasha chapters, read in the corpus. Paraphrased; remedies omitted.

Three things stand out for the 10th. Ketu's own sub-period (Ch. 59 Sl. 1-2) names the 10th lord as one of three lords whose relation helps Ketu, and for a 10th-house Ketu that lord is its own dispositor, though whether dispositorship counts as "related" the text does not say. The Saturn chapter is the one place where a kendra does not rescue Ketu: the evil results come "even if" Ketu is in a kendra or trikona. And the Venus chapter carries the translator's bracket that "it is not laid down anywhere, in which Bhava Ketu does get positional strength", which is a fair warning against treating the 10th as Ketu's directional strength.

A modern casebook on timing

  • Aphorism 13 (APA Vol. II p. 124): a planet closely conjunct Rahu or Ketu gives poor results in its Dasha, the more so the closer the orb. For a 10th-house Ketu that is a planet in the 10th near Ketu's degree, which is exactly the planet the agent rule makes Ketu's principal.
  • Aphorism 22 (p. 125): nodes in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositor give bad results. Ketu in the 10th falls there when the 10th lord is in the 5th, 3rd or 11th.
  • Aphorism 15 (p. 124) gives the Dasha of Ketu in a house that the scan prints as "Sth", which could be the 5th or the 8th. It is not used here.

Saravali's silence, and BPHS Ch. 21

Saravali's Ch. 30, "Effects of Planets in Bhavas", has no verse for Rahu or Ketu in any house, and the Bhrigu Sutras' Other Views open by saying that Brihat Jataka and Saravali do not deal with the nodes in the houses. BPHS's own 10th-house chapter, Ch. 21, names Rahu in Sl. 3 (Rahu in an angle or trine performs religious sacrifices) and does not name Ketu anywhere. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 30 says "Ketu is akin to Rahu" in nature, but the text does not extend Sl. 3 to Ketu, and this page does not either. On both books the honest answer for Ketu in the 10th is silence.

How this app reads Ketu in the 10th

Your Kundali row for Ketu turns favourable only for a planet exalted, in Moolatrikona, own or friendly sign, and outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The engine returns Neutral dignity for Ketu in every sign, so every Ketu in the 10th gets one sentence: "classically more testing, tending toward real lack of direction or recognition in career under affliction". The favourable string for this house, "quiet, behind-the-scenes influence or spiritually-aligned work - genuinely auspicious in this Kendra per classical rules", is in the code but unreachable. Read the row as the house's theme under affliction, not a finding about your Ketu.

The Mahadasha sentence uses the testing wording, and the three-level grade reads neutral. Only a Ketu in the 1st reaches the favourable sentence, and only the 6th, 8th and 12th turn the grade to challenging. That is the clearest gap with BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77, which put a kendra Ketu in the best group.

One more feature touches this placement, through the other node. Career and Money counts Rahu in or aspecting the 10th or 7th as "the classical signature of unconventional or self-created work rather than a conventional post". With Ketu in the 10th, Rahu in the 4th always aspects the 10th, so every chart with a 10th-house Ketu gets that signal, worded as Rahu aspecting the 10th from the 4th. Ketu itself has no rule in that feature.

A transit is a different measurement. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, and with the malefic rule it applies to Ketu, transiting Ketu in the 10th sign from the Moon reads neutral, a classically unremarkable position. The Bhrigu Sutras (Part I, p. 13) give the nodes about 18 months in a sign, moving backward.

A worked chart

An illustrative birth, not a real person: 8 December 1988, 07:30 IST, New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E), computed in this app's engine and re-run on 9 October 2026, with no figure changed. Scorpio rises at 27.81 degrees with the Sun (22.51), the Moon (8.50, Anuradha) and Mercury (26.23, combust) in it. Ketu is at 15.35 degrees of Leo, in Purva Phalguni, in the 10th house; Rahu is at 15.35 Aquarius in the 4th. Mars is in Pisces in the 5th, Jupiter, retrograde, in Taurus in the 7th, Venus in Libra in the 12th and Saturn in Sagittarius in the 2nd.

Nothing joins Ketu, nothing sits with Rahu, and no special aspect reaches the 10th: Jupiter from the 7th aspects the 11th, 1st and 3rd, Mars from the 5th the 8th, 11th and 12th, Saturn from the 2nd the 4th, 8th and 11th. So by the agent rule this Ketu stands for its sign lord, the Sun, lord of the 10th, sitting in the Lagna. Sl. 17 needs a kona or kendra lord to join or aspect the node itself, so it is not met; nor is Chatterjee's Jupiter condition, nor the Bhrigu Sutras' benefic one. Leo is not one of Chamatkar Chintamani's three signs.

What the chart does meet: BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 on position, since Ketu is in a kendra; Uttara Kalamrita point (3) on position, but not on association, since the 10th lord is in the 1st, not with Ketu; and BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 4 for the dispositor, since the 10th lord is in the Lagna with Mercury, a benefic (combust, a qualification the sloka does not address). Aphorism 22 is not met: Ketu is 10th from the Sun, not 6th, 8th or 12th. The engine prints the row as testing and the Mahadasha as testing, graded neutral, and Career and Money prints "Rahu aspects your 10th house from the 4th".

The Moon in Anuradha, a Saturn nakshatra, puts Ketu's Mahadasha from 29 July 2017 to 28 July 2024, with Ketu in the middle ten degrees of Leo. For a contrasting 10th-house Ketu, one aspected by Jupiter and on its face meeting Sl. 17, see Chart B in the Ketu page's worked charts.

Checking a Ketu in the 10th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the birth time: Ketu's sign barely depends on it, its house entirely (what a missing birth time costs). Within two degrees of a sign boundary, the mean or true node can decide the sign.
  2. List any planet in the 10th with Ketu; by the agent rule its lordships are what Ketu mostly delivers. A benefic there is the shared sutra's condition for good dwellings; a 5th or 9th lord there is Uttara Kalamrita's prosperity case. Failing that, list the planets aspecting it, Jupiter first; failing both, read the lord of the 10th.
  3. Check Ketu's sign against the table above, including Chamatkar Chintamani's Aries, Virgo and Scorpio.
  4. Test Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator against the tables above, and the 10th lord's strength in the Shad Bala calculator, which has no row for Ketu itself.
  5. Read the other end of the axis in Rahu in the 4th house, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
Is Ketu in the 10th house good for career?
The sources split. BPHS Ch. 47 puts a kendra Ketu in the best group for its Dasha and Uttara Kalamrita makes an angular node auspicious; Phaladeepika gives fame for courage beside sinful deeds; Chamatkar Chintamani is unfavourable except in three signs; the shared Bhrigu sutra turns on a benefic; and Advanced Predictive Astrology is harsh unless Jupiter aspects. None of them is a career forecast.
Do the Bhrigu Sutras treat Ketu separately from Rahu here?
No. Their translator notes that the author gives one set of effects for both nodes. Only the Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines printed after the sutra are separate for Ketu.
Does Jupiter's aspect on a 10th-house Ketu matter?
In Advanced Predictive Astrology, yes: it removes the blemishes of a Ketu in the 9th or 10th. Jupiter aspects the 10th from the 4th, 2nd or 6th house. The app's row does not look at aspects.
What does the 10th house's link to the father mean for Ketu?
BPHS Ch. 11 gives the 10th the father, Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara makes Ketu the karaka of paternal relations, and Chamatkar Chintamani's Ketu line names no happiness from the father. Those are three separate statements in three books, and none is a forecast about a person's father.
The app says "lack of direction in career". Is that a finding about me?
No. It is the testing sentence for the 10th house, printed for every 10th-house Ketu because the engine assigns Ketu no dignity. The texts make the result depend on Ketu's company and sign, which the row does not read.
Is my Ketu in the 10th exalted or debilitated?
The texts do not agree. BPHS and Uttara Kalamrita exalt Ketu in Scorpio, Uttara Kalamrita adds a fall in Taurus, Sanketnidhi exalts it in Sagittarius, Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara exalts it in Scorpio and Sagittarius and debilitates it in Taurus and Gemini, and a strong school gives the nodes no sign at all. This app follows the last.
Why does Career and Money mention Rahu when my Ketu is in the 10th?
Because Rahu in the 4th always aspects the 10th, and the feature counts Rahu touching the 10th as a sign of unconventional or self-created work. It has no rule for Ketu.
What does Saravali say about Ketu in the 10th?
Nothing. Its chapter on planets in the bhavas has no node verses, and BPHS's own 10th-house chapter names Rahu but never Ketu.
