Planet in house

What the Bhrigu Sutras, the authorities they quote, BPHS and a modern case book say about Ketu in the 4th house: the shared sutra, two Ketu lines about the mother and about not staying in one's own home, the Yoga Karaka rule for nodes in angles, the Dasha conditions, and a worked chart where three planets join Ketu.

A Ketu in the 4th house sits at the bottom of the chart, in the house of home, mother, land and conveyances. It is an angle, so the classical rules that favour nodes in angles apply to it. Yet the two lines written for Ketu in particular describe the same thing from two sides: a person who lives in others' houses, or does not stay long in his own, and who lacks happiness from the mother. The shared Bhrigu sutra adds ornaments and service to others, and makes the mother's distress turn on Ketu's company. The result depends heavily on which planets keep Ketu company, and the worked chart below has three.

This page describes rules, not a person. See also Ketu in Vedic astrology, the 4th house, Sukha Bhava, Rahu in the 4th house and Rahu in the 10th house; the Birth Chart calculator shows your Ketu's house.

A note on sources

Every classical line here was read in the source texts this site writes from: the English Bhrigu Sutras (Part II Ch. 8, p. 111 for this house), Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (Rama R. Rao, 1994) and Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (S. S. Chatterjee, 2000). Phaldeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Uttara Kalamrita are not among those texts; their lines are cited only as the Bhrigu Sutras print them. Ketu is the thinner node in these books: the Bhrigu Sutras give both nodes one shared sutra, Saravali has no node-in-house lines, and the only lines written for Ketu alone in this house are Phaldeepika's and Chamatkar Chintamani's.

The 4th house in brief

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5 says "Conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings" are to be judged from this house, which it calls Bandhu Bhava, the house of relatives; the more familiar name, Sukha Bhava, means the house of happiness. Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 add the general test: a house prospers when a benefic joins or aspects it, and suffers when its lord is with a malefic. Ketu is a malefic in Ch. 3 Sl. 11, and Ch. 3 Sl. 30, after describing Rahu, says only that "Ketu is akin to Rahu".

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara groups the 4th among the kendras and, with the 8th, among the chaturasras (pp. 116-117). It names Ketu the karaka for paternal relations and Rahu the karaka for maternal ones (p. 118). So a 4th-house Ketu puts the significator of the father's side in the house of the mother. The book draws no conclusion from that, though one of the Ketu lines below does speak of paternal property.

The Bhrigu Sutras carry one line that involves Ketu in this house without being about Ketu. Mercury in the 4th, Sutras 32-37 (p. 14), is a good placement - learned, patient, happy through parents, conveyances - but "If Mercury is associated with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn" the person is deprived of the comforts of conveyances, has no land, is bitter with relatives and is deceitful. A Ketu in the 4th therefore changes how a Mercury beside it is read in that text.

The Bhrigu sutra for the 4th, shared with Rahu

The Bhrigu Sutras give one block for "Rahu or Ketu in the Fourth House", Sutras 9-10 on p. 111. The translator explains at the head of the chapter that the author gives the same effects for both nodes, presumably because they always stand seventh from each other, while "the other authorities" give separate effects. So nothing in the sutra is Ketu's alone; it is word for word the sutra on the Rahu page.

The sutra says the person will own many kinds of ornaments, will have two wives and will serve others. Then it adds a condition: if the node is associated with a malefic, the mother will be in distress, "but this will not happen if there is association with a benefic". The earlier version of this page gave only the ornaments and the service; the two wives and the mother's clause are in the text and are reported here as what the sutra says, not as forecasts. The mother's clause is the testable part, because it names its condition, though it does not say whether an aspect counts as association.

Read directly in the Bhrigu Sutras (Part II Ch. 8) and Saravali. Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited only as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

The two Ketu lines agree with each other more closely than in most houses. Phaldeepika has the person living "in the house of others", losing mother, land, happiness and grain fields, and perhaps having to go away from his native place. Chamatkar Chintamani has him without happiness from mother and friends, not staying in his own house for long, and losing paternal property. Both touch the 4th house's core subjects - the dwelling, the land and the mother - and read them as unsettled. The earlier version of this page shortened both lines and kept only the dwelling and the land; the mother is named in both, and that changes the answer to the question most readers bring.

Neither Ketu line sets a sign condition for this house. That is a real difference from Rahu: Chamatkar Chintamani's Rahu line for the 4th names Aries, Cancer and Virgo as good signs, and its Ketu line names none. The Rahu lines also differ in kind - Phaldeepika's Rahu is a matter of character, its Ketu a matter of place and loss - so the two nodes in the 4th, though they share a sutra, do not share a reading.

Where the authorities disagree

  • On the mother. The shared sutra makes her distress conditional on a malefic and cancels it with a benefic. Both Ketu lines state the loss without a condition.
  • On the house. Both Ketu lines read the dwelling as unsettled. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 put a Ketu in a kendra among the good Dasha placements, with conveyances and happiness from wife and children among the results.
  • On land. Phaldeepika names the loss of land and grain fields, Chamatkar Chintamani the loss of paternal property. The Ketu-Ketu sub-period in BPHS Ch. 59 Sl. 1-2 gives "gain of land, village etc." with Ketu in a kendra.
  • On angles in general. Uttara Kalamrita, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, says the nodes become auspicious in a kendra or trikona. The Ketu lines are written for a kendra and read it unfavourably. The texts do not reconcile the two.

The 4th-house chapter and Saravali, which do not name Ketu

BPHS Ch. 15, "Effects of Bandhu Bhava", names no node in any of its slokas. Its closing rule on conveyances (Sl. 10-14) is general: a benefic in the 4th, aspecting it, or joined to or aspecting its lord brings happiness with conveyances, and "a malefic, replacing the said benefic, will cause losses, concerning vehicles". Ketu counts as a malefic, so a strict reading puts a 4th-house Ketu on the second side of that rule, as one condition among several.

Saravali Ch. 30, its chapter on planets in houses, has no line for Rahu or Ketu in any house; it was read in full for this page. The Bhrigu Sutras note the same of Saravali and Brihat Jatak. Saravali's only node lines elsewhere, in Ch. 12, are about Rahu, not Ketu. There is no Saravali reading for Ketu in the 4th, and this page does not supply one.

Rahu in the 10th: the other half of this placement

Ketu and Rahu stand at the same degree of opposite signs, so in this app's whole-sign houses a Ketu in the 4th always has Rahu in the 10th. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give every graha a full aspect on the 7th from itself and special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and the engine follows that. Ketu's single aspect therefore falls on the 10th, on Rahu, and Rahu's falls back on Ketu. The nodes hold the two angles of the vertical axis, home at the bottom and work at the top. Because the Bhrigu Sutras use one set of sutras for both nodes, the sutra for Rahu in the 10th is the same text as the sutra for Ketu in the 10th; Rahu in the 10th house takes that side, and Ketu in the 10th house the reverse axis.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 82-83) gives Ketu aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th from itself. From the 4th those fall on the 6th, the 10th and the 1st, so on that scheme a 4th-house Ketu also reaches the Lagna. BPHS does not give those aspects and the app does not use them. Counted the other way, in the app's scheme a Ketu in the 4th is aspected by Rahu, by any planet in the 10th, by Mars in the 9th or 1st, by Jupiter in the 8th or 12th, and by Saturn in the 7th or 2nd house of the chart.

That count matters for one BPHS rule. Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 say a Ketu that "receives a Drishti from a malefic" gives confinement, destruction of kinsmen and residence, and anxieties in its Dasha. In the app's scheme Rahu, a malefic, aspects Ketu in every chart. BPHS Ch. 26 does not name the nodes among the aspecting grahas, and the chapter does not say whether Rahu's glance at Ketu counts; read literally with the app's aspects, the clause would apply to every Ketu, which suggests it was not written with the node-on-node aspect in mind.

Whose agent is it? Ketu and the lord of the 4th

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give "predominantly the effects" due to union with a house lord or due to the house they occupy. The commentary closing the Bhrigu Sutras chapter (pp. 114-115) sets an order: a node acts for the planet it is conjoined with; failing that, for a planet aspecting it; only when it is neither joined nor aspected does it stand for the lord of its sign. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's rule 10 (p. 142) says the nodes give results by position, association and the rulers of the houses they occupy. In whole-sign houses the lord of Ketu's sign is the lord of the 4th itself, the lord of home and mother. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give "acquisition of house and land" in the Dasha of the 4th lord, but that line attaches to the lord's own period; the engine gives Ketu's period no house-lordship lines.

Because the 4th is an angle, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 also applies: a node in a kendra, aspected by or associated with the lord of a kona or a kendra, "will become Yog Karak". Sl. 15 limits lords that also own an evil house, so the lord doing the aspecting has to be checked as well. BPHS Ch. 54 Sl. 50-51 add a narrower bracket of their own: Ketu "assumes the role of a Yog Karak" if it is joined with a Yoga Karaka graha, the lord of both a kendra and a trikona. The engine's Yoga Karaka panel follows the Lagna-by-Lagna list of Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44, which names no node, so these tests are done by eye.

Uttara Kalamrita, as quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras (point 3), names the cleanest case for a node in an angle: it becomes auspicious "when they are associated with the lord of that particular kendra or kona house in which they are posited". For a 4th-house Ketu that is the 4th lord, its own dispositor, sitting with it in its own sign. The same point ends by saying the auspiciousness is lost if the 9th lord also owns the 8th or 12th, which in whole-sign arithmetic happens for Aries, Gemini and Libra risings; the English at that point is garbled, so this is the clause's plain sense rather than a settled rule.

Whole-sign arithmetic: the 4th sign from each Lagna. Dignity notes read in BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39, the Bhrigu Sutras p. 13 (Uttara Kalamrita, Sanketnidhi) and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara pp. 82-83; Magha and Ashwini are Ketu's nakshatras in the Vimshottari scheme. This app applies none of the dignity schemes.

The schemes disagree sharply. BPHS gives Ketu Scorpio as both exaltation and own sign, with Sagittarius as moolatrikona; Uttara Kalamrita, as the Bhrigu Sutras report it, agrees on Scorpio but makes Virgo the moolatrikona; Sanketnidhi exalts Ketu in Sagittarius and gives it Pisces; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara makes it lord of Aries, exalted in Scorpio and Sagittarius and debilitated in Taurus and Gemini. Only Scorpio, which a 4th-house Ketu occupies for Leo rising, is strong in all three schemes that rate it. Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 make exaltation or own sign one of the routes to a good Ketu Dasha, so for several rising signs the scheme a reader follows changes the answer.

Ketu's Mahadasha from the 4th

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 71 calls Ketu "a headless trunk (Kabandha)" and Sl. 72-77 then sort its Dasha by house. If Ketu is in a kendra, a trikona or the 11th, in a benefic sign, or exalted or in its own sign, the period gives cordial relations with the ruler, headship of a country or village, comforts of conveyances, happiness from children and wife, gain from foreign countries and cattle. The 4th is a kendra, so it falls in this group; conveyances, one of the results named, are a 4th-house subject. The same passage splits the period into thirds, Raj Yog at the start, fearfulness in the middle, ailments and distant journeys at the end. The unfavourable group is the 2nd, 8th and 12th, or a malefic's aspect - the clause discussed above. Ketu Mahadasha sets out the period sub-period by sub-period, and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

For the 4th the special rule and the general test of Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 do not conflict: the 4th is neither a dusthana nor the Lagna, so the general test is silent, and Sl. 72-77 put it in the favourable group. Three other BPHS rules leave the 4th alone. Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 name the nodes as Marakas in the 1st, 7th, 8th and 12th; the 4th is not among them. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 add in brackets that the nodes give favourable results in the 3rd, 6th and 11th; the 4th is not among those either. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time a Dasha's results by the lord's third of the sign and reverse the order for the always-retrograde nodes: a Ketu in the last ten degrees of its sign delivers early in its period, one in the first ten late.

Ketu's sub-periods when Ketu is in a kendra

The Antardasha chapters (BPHS Ch. 52-60) give conditions for Ketu's sub-period inside each Mahadasha. The rows below list what a 4th-house Ketu can meet by position from the Lagna, and say so where the chapter counts only from the Mahadasha lord or does not name the kendras. The texts also prescribe remedial measures, which this app does not prescribe.

MahadashaBPHSDoes Ketu in the 4th meet the good condition? What the text gives
SunCh. 52 Sl. 62-64No: the good houses are the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11thThe 4th is not named

KetuCh. 59 Sl. 1-2Yes, as a kendra; also if related to the 4th, 9th or 10th lordHappiness from wife and children, recognition, gain of land, but mental agony
VenusCh. 60 Sl. 67-69Not by house; the text's own bracket says no house is laid down for Ketu's positional strengthGains, if exalted, own sign or related to a Yoga Karaka
Read in BPHS Ch. 52-60. Conditions for the 2nd, 7th, 8th and 12th are not reproduced. Remedies printed in these chapters are omitted.

Two details in the table are specific to this house. Ketu's own sub-period (Ch. 59 Sl. 1-2) is good if Ketu is related to the lord of the 9th, the 10th or Bandhu, the 4th; a 4th-house Ketu is always in the 4th lord's sign, which is one reading of "related". And the Saturn chapter is the one place where a kendra does not help Ketu at all: the sub-period is called evil even in a kendra, with a better case counted from Saturn instead. The pattern elsewhere is the one Ch. 47 sets: a kendra is a good house for Ketu, and the 2nd, 7th, 8th and 12th are the difficult ones.

A modern case book on Ketu and the 4th

Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (S. S. Chatterjee, 2000) is a modern book, and its rules are one author's view. It has no line for Ketu in the 4th as such. Three lines bear on the placement: a planet "in close proximity to Ketu generates malefic results" (p. 52); a planet "in close company of Rahu or Ketu" does not give good results in its Dasha, "Closer the orb more evils" (p. 124, aphorism 13); and when Rahu or Ketu in transit crosses the 4th cusp, "lingering problems relating to landed property, tend to be solved" (p. 318). The last is measured by cusp, which this app's whole-sign houses do not use.

How this app reads Ketu in the 4th

Your Kundali row for Ketu turns favourable only for a planet exalted, in Moolatrikona, own or friendly sign, and outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The engine returns Neutral dignity for Ketu in every sign, so every Ketu in the 4th gets one sentence: "classically more testing, tending toward real disconnection from home or mother under affliction". The favourable string for this house, "ease with a simple home life and spiritual comfort - genuinely auspicious in this Kendra per classical rules", is in the code but unreachable. Read the row as the house's theme under affliction, not a finding about your Ketu.

The Mahadasha sentence uses the testing wording, "disconnection, unexpected loss and a pull toward isolation", and the three-level grade reads neutral. Only a Ketu in the 1st reaches the favourable sentence, and only the 6th, 8th and 12th turn the grade to challenging. In the engine's 4,000-chart run every chart with Ketu in the 4th got the testing sentence and the neutral grade. Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77, which put a kendra Ketu in the good group, are not coded, and neither are the sub-period conditions above.

A transit is a different measurement. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, and with the malefic rule it applies to Ketu, transiting Ketu in the 4th sign from the Moon reads testing. The Bhrigu Sutras (p. 13) give the nodes a retrograde motion of 19 degrees 20 minutes a year and about 18 months in a sign.

A worked chart

An illustrative birth, not a real person: 12 August 1989, 01:30 IST, New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E), computed in this app's engine and re-run on 9 October 2026 after an engine update; every figure came out unchanged. Taurus rises at 28.00 degrees. Ketu is at 2.28 degrees of Leo, in Magha, in the 4th house, joined by Mars at 11.52, Mercury at 17.27 and Venus at 28.84, all in Leo; the engine marks Mars combust. Rahu is at 2.28 Aquarius in the 10th with no company. The Sun, lord of Leo, is at 25.41 Cancer in the 3rd; the Moon at 19.14 Scorpio in the 7th, Jupiter at 8.70 Gemini in the 2nd and Saturn, retrograde, at 14.26 Sagittarius in the 8th. The only aspect the engine counts on Ketu is Rahu's.

With three planets in the house, the agent rule looks no further than the conjunction. For Taurus rising, Venus rules the 1st and 6th, Mercury the 2nd and 5th, and Mars the 7th and 12th. So an angular Ketu is associated with the lord of a trine (Mercury, the 5th) and with lords of angles (Venus, the 1st; Mars, the 7th): on its face the condition of BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17. Sl. 15's limit on lords that also own an evil house bears on Venus, which owns the 6th, and on Mars, which owns the 12th; Mercury's other house, the 2nd, is not on the evil list. Ch. 54's narrower bracket is not met: the one planet ruling a kendra and a trikona for Taurus is Saturn (9th and 10th), which is in the 8th. Nor is Uttara Kalamrita's cleanest case: the 4th lord, the Sun, is in the 3rd.

Because Mercury is with Ketu, the Bhrigu Sutras' reversal of Mercury's good 4th-house sutras applies. The mother's clause of the shared sutra meets both conditions at once: Mars, a malefic, and Venus and Mercury, benefics, are all associated with Ketu, and the sutra does not say which wins. Advanced Predictive Astrology's orb rule ranks them by distance: Mars is 9.24 degrees from Ketu, Mercury 14.99 and Venus 26.56, so on that book's reading Mars, the closest, is the planet whose Dasha Ketu disturbs most.

The engine prints Ketu's row as "classically more testing, tending toward real disconnection from home or mother under affliction" and the Mahadasha as testing, graded neutral; neither looks at the three planets beside Ketu. The Moon in Jyeshtha, a Mercury nakshatra, put Ketu's Mahadasha early, from 15 June 2003 to 15 June 2010. Ketu is in the first ten degrees of Leo, so the reversed decanate rule places its results toward the end of that period. Leo is the Sun's sign, and the Sun is a malefic in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11, so the "benefic sign" route of Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 is not met; the kendra route is. The Ketu-Ketu sub-period that opens the period meets Ch. 59 Sl. 1-2 by the kendra alone.

Checking a Ketu in the 4th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the birth time: Ketu's sign barely depends on it, its house entirely (what a missing birth time costs). Within two degrees of a sign boundary, the mean or true node can decide the sign.
  2. List any planet in the 4th with Ketu and note its distance in degrees; by the agent rule its lordships are what Ketu mostly delivers. If Mercury is there, the Bhrigu Sutras' reversal of Mercury's sutras applies. Failing that, list the planets aspecting it; failing both, read the lord of the 4th.
  3. Note whether any benefic is with Ketu, for the mother's clause of the shared sutra, and whether any kendra or trikona lord is, for BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17.
  4. Test Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator against the tables above, and the 4th lord's strength in the Shad Bala calculator, which has no row for Ketu itself.
  5. Read the other end of the axis in Rahu in the 10th house, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
Does Ketu in the 4th house mean moving house often?
Both Ketu lines quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras read the dwelling as unsettled: Phaldeepika has the person living in the house of others and perhaps leaving his native place, Chamatkar Chintamani has him not staying long in his own house. They are classical readings, not a forecast, and the same tradition makes an angular node a Yoga Karaka when the lord of a trine or angle joins or aspects it.
Does Ketu in the 4th affect the mother?
Both Ketu lines name her: Phaldeepika speaks of loss of the mother, Chamatkar Chintamani of no happiness from her. The shared Bhrigu sutra makes her distress depend on a malefic and cancels it with a benefic. An earlier version of this page said the Ketu lines did not mention her; that was wrong. None of this is a medical or family prediction.
Is the Bhrigu sutra for Ketu in the 4th different from Rahu's?
No. The Bhrigu Sutras give one sutra for both nodes in each house. The lines that differ are the Other Views it quotes; see Rahu in the 4th house.
Ketu is in my 4th with Mercury. Does that matter?
In the Bhrigu Sutras, yes: Mercury's favourable 4th-house reading is replaced by loss of conveyance comforts and land when Mercury is with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn. By the agent rule, Ketu also takes on Mercury's lordships.
Why does the app call my Ketu in the 4th "classically more testing"?
Because the row's favourable wording needs a strong dignity, and the engine gives Ketu none in any sign. Every Ketu in the 4th gets the same sentence. Who joins and aspects your Ketu, which the texts treat as decisive, is something the row does not look at.
Is my Ketu in the 4th exalted or debilitated?
The texts do not agree. BPHS Ch. 47 exalts Ketu in Scorpio, Uttara Kalamrita (as the Bhrigu Sutras report it) adds a fall in Taurus, Sanketnidhi exalts it in Sagittarius, Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara exalts it in Scorpio and Sagittarius, and a strong school gives the nodes no sign at all. This app follows the last and assigns Ketu no dignity. The table above shows which rising signs put Ketu in each of those signs in the 4th.
Is Ketu's Mahadasha good from the 4th?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 put a Ketu in a kendra in the favourable group, with conveyances among the results, and divide the period into a good start, a fearful middle and an ailing end. The app does not code that rule and prints testing.
What does Saravali say about Ketu in the 4th?
Nothing. Its chapter on planets in houses has no line for either node, and its node lines elsewhere are about Rahu.
