Planet in house

What the Bhrigu Sutras, the authorities they quote, BPHS and a modern case book say about Rahu in the 4th house, where they disagree, why the mother's line turns on a benefic, how the Yoga Karaka rule for a node in a kendra applies here, and what the app prints.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

The 4th is a kendra, an angle of the chart, and the house of home, mother, land and comfort. Rahu, the Moon's ascending node, owns no sign and has no dignity in this app, so its reading in the 4th rests on the house, on what joins or aspects it, and on one BPHS rule that only works in a kendra. This page sets out what the source books say, line by line, where they disagree, where they are silent, and what the app prints. For the node itself, see Rahu in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 4th house (Sukha Bhava); for the node opposite, Ketu in the 4th house reads the same house from the other side.

Where these citations come from

Every classical line here was read in the source texts this site writes from: the English Bhrigu Sutras (Part II Ch. 8, p. 111 for this house), Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (Rama R. Rao, 1994) and Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (S. S. Chatterjee, 2000). Phaldeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Uttara Kalamrita are not among those texts; their lines are cited only as the Bhrigu Sutras print them. Quotations are short; the rest is paraphrase.

The house Rahu occupies here

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5 names what the 4th, which it calls Bandhu Bhava, is to be consulted for: "Conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings". Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 give the test for any house: it prospers when a benefic joins or aspects it, or when its lord is well placed, and suffers when its lord is with a malefic, does not aspect it, or is with the lord of an evil house. Rahu is a malefic in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11, so by that general test a Rahu in the 4th is a weight on the house unless a benefic also reaches it. Ch. 3 Sl. 30 describes Rahu as smoky, windy in temperament and intelligent, and says only that Ketu is akin to Rahu.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara groups the 4th twice: among the kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) and, with the 8th, among the chaturasras (pp. 116-117). The same book names Rahu the karaka for maternal relations and Ketu the karaka for paternal ones (p. 118). That puts Rahu, by one modern classification, in a house that already signifies the mother, as the significator of the mother's side of the family. The book does not draw a conclusion from that overlap, and neither does this page.

Two rules specific to the nodes pull the other way from the malefic test. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give "predominantly the effects" due to their union with a house lord or due to the house they occupy. Sl. 17 says a node in a kendra, aspected by or associated with the lord of a kona or a kendra, "will become Yog Karak". The Bhrigu Sutras commentary cites Uttara Kalamrita that the nodes become auspicious when they occupy a trikona or kendra. The 4th is a kendra, so both favourable routes are open here, which they are not in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th.

The Bhrigu sutra for the 4th, which Rahu shares with Ketu

The Bhrigu Sutras give one block for "Rahu or Ketu in the Fourth House", Sutras 9-10 on p. 111. The translator's note at the head of the chapter explains why: the author gives the same effects for both nodes, presumably because they always stand seventh from each other, while "the other authorities" give separate effects. So the sutra below is word for word the sutra on the Ketu page, and only the Other Views that follow it belong to Rahu alone.

Sutras 9-10 make three plain statements and one conditional one. The person will own many kinds of ornaments, will have two wives, and will serve others. Then: if the node is associated with a malefic, the mother will be in distress, "but this will not happen if there is association with a benefic". The earlier version of this page left out the two wives. It is in the text, in a 4th-house sutra rather than a 7th-house one, and it is reported here as what the sutra says; it is not a forecast about anyone's marriage, and nothing in this app computes it.

Ornaments sit naturally in this house, since BPHS lists treasure among the 4th's subjects. Service to others is less obvious; the sutra gives no reason for it. The conditional clause is the part a reader can test, because it names its condition. It does not say what counts as association. In the Bhrigu Sutras' own commentary, association and aspect are listed separately (a node acts for the planet it is conjoined with, and failing that for one that aspects it), which suggests a conjunction is the plain reading and an aspect a wider one.

Read directly in the Bhrigu Sutras (Part II Ch. 8), BPHS and Saravali. Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited only as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

Phaldeepika, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, is the harshest of the three: the person is "stupid, troublesome, short lived and seldom happy". The earlier version of this page reported that no Phaldeepika line existed for this house; that was wrong, and the line is given here in full. Its third term is a statement about lifespan. This app does not compute lifespan and this page draws nothing from that word.

Chamatkar Chintamani, as quoted, opens with the mother: she "will be sickly". It then turns: Rahu in Aries, Cancer or Virgo "gives beneficial results", and the person "will then become a king". Both halves are given here because both are in the text. The earlier version kept only the sign condition. The "king" is the classical register for high standing; the sentence is a sign condition, not a promise.

Where the authorities disagree

  • On the mother. The Bhrigu sutra makes her distress conditional on a malefic and cancels it with a benefic. Chamatkar Chintamani states it without a condition. Phaldeepika does not mention her at all.
  • On the person. Phaldeepika gives an unhappy, troublesome character with no exception. Chamatkar Chintamani gives royal standing in three signs. The Bhrigu sutra gives ornaments and service and says nothing of character.
  • On the house's promise. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 put Bandhu Bhava in the list for a Rahu Dasha with "felicity at home" among its results, on conditions. None of the three Other Views mentions the Dasha.
  • On what decides. The Bhrigu sutra and BPHS decide by company (benefic or malefic); Chamatkar Chintamani decides by sign. They are different tests and can give different answers for the same chart.

The Ketu lines for the same house, which the Bhrigu Sutras print beside these, are different again: they speak of living in others' houses and losing land. They are set out on Ketu in the 4th house and are not Rahu's.

The sign lists, side by side

Chamatkar Chintamani's Aries, Cancer and Virgo is one of several sign lists for Rahu in the books, and they do not agree. Set side by side, the lists show how much a sign condition depends on which authority is speaking. Only the first row is written for the 4th house.

Each row read in the text named. The app applies none of these lists; it gives Rahu no dignity in any sign.

Aries, Cancer and Virgo each appear in several lists; Virgo appears in almost all. Libra, Leo and Capricorn as favourable signs appear in none, and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara makes Capricorn Rahu's own sign where BPHS makes it Aquarius. The practical reading is narrow: a Rahu in the 4th in Aries, Cancer or Virgo meets Chamatkar Chintamani's condition, and nothing more general follows.

The 4th-house chapter, which does not name Rahu

BPHS Ch. 15, "Effects of Bandhu Bhava", runs to fourteen slokas and names no node anywhere. Sl. 2 gives full residential comforts when the 4th holds its own lord or the Lagna lord and receives a benefic's aspect; Sl. 4 gives "beautiful mansions" when the 10th lord joins the 4th lord in an angle or trine. Its closing rule on conveyances, Sl. 10-14, is general: a benefic in the 4th, aspecting it, or joined to or aspecting its lord brings happiness with conveyances, and "a malefic, replacing the said benefic, will cause losses, concerning vehicles". Rahu counts as a malefic, so a strict reading puts it on the second side of that rule. The chapter states it as one condition among several, not a verdict, and its ages for acquiring a conveyance are single-sloka statements the app does not compute.

One sutra elsewhere in the Bhrigu Sutras does name Rahu in a 4th-house context. Mercury in the 4th, Sutras 32-37 (p. 14), is a good placement, but "If Mercury is associated with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn" the person is deprived of the comfort of conveyances, has no land and is on bitter terms with relatives. So a Mercury joined to a 4th-house Rahu loses its own good 4th-house reading in that text.

Saravali's silence

Saravali Ch. 30, "Effects of Planets in Bhavas", has house lines for the seven grahas and none for Rahu or Ketu in any house; the chapter was read in full for this page. The Bhrigu Sutras say the same of Saravali and Brihat Jatak in the 1st-house Other Views. Saravali's two Rahu lines in Ch. 12, on the cancelling of evils at birth, concern Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th with benefic aspect, and Rahu in the Ascendant in Aries, Taurus or Cancer. Neither is about the 4th. There is no Saravali reading for Rahu in the 4th, and this page does not supply one.

Rahu speaks for others: the dispositor, the company and the Yoga Karaka rule

The lord of Rahu's sign is the 4th lord itself, so BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 turns into a question about the planet that rules home and mother. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary (pp. 114-115) ranks the voices: Rahu acts as agent for a planet conjoined with it; if none, for a planet that aspects it; only when it is "neither conjoined with, nor aspected by any planet" does it represent the lord of its sign. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's rule 10 (p. 142) says the same in one sentence: the nodes, owning no houses, give results by position, association and the rulers of the houses they occupy.

  • A benefic joined with Rahu in the 4th meets the Bhrigu sutra condition for the mother and the Ch. 47 association condition at once.
  • Ketu is always in the 10th and, in this app's aspect scheme, always aspects the 4th, so by the agent rule Rahu is never wholly alone here, and the aspect it receives from Ketu is a malefic one.
  • If the lord of the 5th or 9th (a trikona) or of the 1st, 7th or 10th (a kendra) joins or aspects Rahu, Ch. 34 Sl. 17 makes Rahu a Yoga Karaka. Sl. 15 warns that a kendra or kona lord that also owns an evil house does not make a Raj Yoga by relation alone, so that lord's other house matters.
  • Uttara Kalamrita, as the Bhrigu Sutras give it (point 3), names a narrower case: a node becomes auspicious "when they are associated with the lord of that particular kendra or kona house in which they are posited". For a 4th-house Rahu that is the 4th lord, so the 4th lord sitting in its own sign with Rahu is the textbook favourable case.

Uttara Kalamrita's point 3 ends with a spoiling clause: the auspiciousness is lost if the lord of the 9th also owns the 8th or 12th. In whole-sign arithmetic that happens for three rising signs. For Aries, Jupiter rules the 9th and the 12th; for Gemini, Saturn rules the 8th and the 9th; for Libra, Mercury rules the 9th and the 12th. The Bhrigu Sutras' English is garbled at this point, so this is the plain sense of the clause rather than a settled rule.

Whole-sign arithmetic: the 4th sign from each Lagna and its lord. Where one planet rules both a kendra and a trikona, its joining or aspecting Rahu meets BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 twice over; where that planet is also the 4th lord (Leo, Libra, Aquarius), its joining Rahu also meets Uttara Kalamrita point 3. The app tests none of this.

The Yoga Karaka rule is not tested by the app. What a yoga in your chart means explains the idea, and the yogas calculator lists the combinations the app does compute. BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 3, in the 10th-house chapter, adds one more line that covers this placement: "If Rahu is in an angle, or in a trine, he will perform religious sacrifices, like Jyotishtoma". It is stated without conditions and is the only line in the bhava chapters that a 4th-house Rahu meets by position alone.

Ketu in the 10th and the single aspect

This app gives Rahu only the 7th aspect, following BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5, which give every graha the 7th aspect and reserve special aspects for Saturn, Jupiter and Mars without naming the nodes. From the 4th it lands on the 10th, the house of work, where Ketu always is. So the axis joins home and career, and each node aspects the other. The 10th-house side is on Ketu in the 10th house, and the reverse axis on Rahu in the 10th house.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 82-83) disagrees: it gives Rahu aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from itself. From the 4th those fall on the 6th, the 10th and the 1st. On that scheme a 4th-house Rahu also reaches the Lagna and the house of enemies and illness. The app does not use those aspects, and BPHS does not give them; a reader following Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara would read the Lagna as touched by Rahu where this app does not.

The 7th aspect has one direct effect in the app. Career and Money counts Rahu in or aspecting the 7th or 10th house as one sign of unconventional or self-made work, so Rahu in the 4th triggers it by aspect. Because both nodes count as malefics, a graha in the 4th or 10th is aspected by both, which lowers its aspect score in the Shad Bala calculator and rules a benefic there out of Adhi and Amala Yoga.

What the BPHS Dasha chapters say for Rahu in the 4th

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 first fix Rahu's signs (exalted in Taurus, moolatrikona Gemini, own Aquarius, with "some sages" giving Virgo) and then give the condition that names this house. If Rahu is associated with or aspected by benefics, is in a benefic sign, and is in "Tanu, Bandhu, Yuvati, Karm, Labh, or Sahaj", the Dasha brings comforts through the government, wealth through a foreign government or sovereign, and "felicity at home". Bandhu is the 4th. The result named last is a 4th-house result, so the sloka is written with this house in view.

Sl. 40-43 give the reverse. Rahu in the 8th or 12th brings troubles; Rahu "associated with a malefic, or a Marak Grah", or debilitated, brings loss of position, "destruction of his residential house", mental agony and trouble to wife and children, with losses at the start, some relief in one's own country in the middle and anxieties at the end. The house is the same in both cases; the company decides. Read together with the Bhrigu sutra, every Rahu-specific rule for the 4th in these books asks the same question: benefic or malefic company.

Three further BPHS rules leave the 4th alone. Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 make the nodes Marakas in the 1st, 7th, 8th or 12th and say Rahu in the 6th, 8th or 12th gives difficulties in its Dasha unless a benefic aspects or joins it; the 4th is in neither list. (The same slokas make Rahu a Maraka for Capricorn and Scorpio risings, which put Rahu's 4th in Aries and Aquarius; this app does not compute Marakas or lifespan.) Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 add, in brackets, that the nodes give favourable results in the 3rd, 6th and 11th; the 4th is not among them. Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give "acquisition of house and land" in the Dasha of the 4th lord, which is Rahu's dispositor, but that is the lord's own period, not Rahu's.

Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time the results by the third of the sign the Dasha lord occupies and reverse the order for retrograde grahas: "The Dasha effects of Rahu and Ketu, who are always retrograde, will always be realized in the reverse order." So a Rahu in the first ten degrees of its sign delivers at the end of its period, one in the last ten degrees at the start, and one in the middle third in the middle. Ch. 50 Sl. 51-52 add, for a rashi Dasha (not the Vimshottari periods this app dates), that the natural significations of the house Rahu occupies are harmed at the start of the period; for this house those are home, mother and land.

Rahu's sub-periods when Rahu is in a kendra

The Antardasha chapters (BPHS Ch. 52-60) give conditions for Rahu's sub-period inside each Mahadasha. The 4th appears in them as a kendra from the Lagna. The rows below list only the conditions a 4th-house Rahu can meet by position, with what the text attaches. Conditions counted from the Mahadasha lord are left out, because they depend on that lord, not on this house. The texts also prescribe remedial measures, which this app does not prescribe.

Read in BPHS Ch. 52-60. Conditions for the 2nd, 7th, 8th and 12th, and those counted from the Mahadasha lord, are not reproduced. Remedies printed in these chapters are omitted.

Two patterns run through the table. Rahu in a kendra is treated well in most chapters, but often with a bad opening: the Sun, Mercury and Ketu chapters put the trouble first, and the Moon chapter reverses it, good first, trouble later. And the Sun and Mars chapters repeat the benefic condition of Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39. None of the sub-period rules singles out the 4th by name; it qualifies as an angle. For the 2nd and 7th, by contrast, nearly every chapter names physical distress, which is one reason the 4th reads better than its malefic occupant suggests.

A modern case book on the 4th and Rahu

Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (S. S. Chatterjee, 2000) is a modern book of rules and case studies, and its views are one author's, not classical slokas. Three of its lines touch this placement.

  • p. 73: with a malefic in the 4th and the 4th lord combust or with a malefic, the person loses paternal property, "and if Rahu too is involved, he will sell away properties without any fore thought". The condition is the afflicted 4th lord; Rahu adds to it.
  • p. 124, aphorism 13: a planet "in close company of Rahu or Ketu" does not give good results in its Dasha, and "Closer the orb more evils". For a 4th-house Rahu, the planet sitting closest to it in degrees is the one this rule names.
  • p. 318, transits: Rahu is bad in transit through the 4th from the natal Moon sign, among other houses; and when Rahu or Ketu in transit crosses the 4th cusp, "lingering problems relating to landed property, tend to be solved". The book measures by cusp, which this app's whole-sign houses do not use.

The same page of that book has lines about Rahu in the 4th for women that this page does not repeat. The book's gemstone advice elsewhere is also left out; this app does not prescribe remedies.

How this app reads Rahu in the 4th

The engine returns Neutral for Rahu's dignity in every sign. The favourable planet-in-house line on the Kundali page needs an exalted, moolatrikona, own or friendly sign, so every Rahu in the 4th gets the testing line: "real domestic instability under affliction". The favourable line written for this house, "gains through unconventional property or a distinctive home life - genuinely auspicious in this Kendra per classical rules", reflects the kendra rule but is never shown, because no Rahu passes the dignity test. None of the sign lists above is applied.

The Mahadasha reading applies BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, which pass a Dasha lord in the Lagna or in exaltation, own or friendly sign. For Rahu, with no dignity in the engine, that passes only in the 1st house. In the 4th it reads testing, with the theme "instability, anxiety and outcomes that don't match the effort put in", and the quality label reads neutral. Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39, which list the 4th as a good house on conditions, are not coded, and neither are the sub-period conditions above.

Timing: the Mahadasha and the transit

Rahu's Mahadasha runs eighteen years. Dates come from the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, and the sub-periods are set out on the Rahu Mahadasha page. Inside them, the reversed-decanate rule of Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 and the sub-period table above are the two classical tools that apply to a 4th-house Rahu.

In transit the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and it treats the 4th from the Moon as testing for every graha, benefic or malefic, because its source lists the 4th among the bad positions for both groups. That is the Moon count, not the natal 4th house, and it agrees in this one house with the modern transit list above.

A worked chart

We ran the engine for 10 March 1995, 14:10 IST, New Delhi, and re-ran it on 9 October 2026 after an engine update; every figure below came out unchanged. Cancer rises at 1.21 degrees, so Libra is the 4th. Rahu is at 14.36 Libra in Swati pada 3, alone in the 4th house; Ketu is at 14.36 Aries in the 10th. Rahu's dispositor Venus, lord of the 4th and 11th for Cancer rising, is at 14.97 Capricorn in the 7th, a kendra. Mars is at 20.67 Cancer in the 1st, debilitated, and aspects the 4th by its special 4th-house aspect. Jupiter is at 20.81 Scorpio in the 5th. The Moon is at 5.70 Gemini in the 12th; the Sun, Mercury and Saturn are in Aquarius in the 8th.

  • Placement line: Neutral, favourable false, the 4th-house testing sentence.
  • Mahadasha line: favourable false; quality neutral.
  • Aspects on Rahu, as the engine counts them: Mars and Ketu.
  • Dates: a short Mars balance to 11 September 1995, then Rahu's Mahadasha to 11 September 2013.
  • Career and Money: Rahu aspects the 10th, so the unconventional-work signal is counted. Kaal Sarp: not present.

Checked by hand against the books, the chart splits the sources. For Cancer rising Mars rules the 5th (Scorpio), a trikona, and the 10th (Aries), a kendra, and Mars aspects Rahu in the 4th. That is the condition of BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 for Rahu to become a Yoga Karaka, and Mars owns no evil house to trigger Sl. 15. The sloka does not ask about the aspecting lord's dignity, so Mars being debilitated does not cancel it on the text, though a reader may weigh it. Uttara Kalamrita's narrower case is not met: Venus, the 4th lord, is in the 7th, not with Rahu.

Against that, no benefic reaches Rahu. Jupiter in the 5th aspects the 9th, 11th and 1st; Venus in the 7th aspects the 1st. So the benefic condition of the Bhrigu sutra and of Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 is not met. Mars is a malefic aspecting Rahu, and Ketu is another; whether an aspect counts as "associated with a malefic" in the sutra is the open question noted above. Libra is not one of Chamatkar Chintamani's three signs. BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 3 is met by position alone. Rahu at 14.36 degrees is in the middle third of Libra, so the reversed timing rule keeps its main results in the middle of the 1995-2013 period. The app prints testing on both lines; the hand check finds one favourable condition it does not test, one unfavourable condition it does not test either, and one book that has nothing to say.

Checking Rahu in your own 4th house

  1. Cast the chart in the birth chart calculator with an exact time and confirm Rahu's house and sign.
  2. List the grahas joined with Rahu and those aspecting the 4th. Note any benefic, and note whether the nearest one is close in degrees.
  3. Check the sign against Chamatkar Chintamani's Aries, Cancer and Virgo, remembering it is one authority's list.
  4. Work out which grahas rule your kendras and trikonas, and check whether any of them joins or aspects Rahu. Check whether the 4th lord is with it.
  5. If Mercury is with Rahu, read the Bhrigu Sutras' reversal of Mercury's 4th-house sutras.
  6. Note Rahu's degree for the reversed Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 timing, then read the dates and the sub-period table.
Is Rahu in the 4th house bad for the mother?
The Bhrigu Sutras tie her distress to Rahu being with a malefic and say it does not happen with a benefic. Chamatkar Chintamani, as quoted there, calls her sickly without a condition, and Phaldeepika does not mention her. The texts disagree, and none of it is a medical statement.
Does Phaldeepika say anything about Rahu in the 4th?
Yes. As the Bhrigu Sutras quote it (p. 111), it is harsh: stupid, troublesome, short lived and seldom happy. An earlier version of this page wrongly said there was no such line. This app does not compute lifespan.
Can Rahu in the 4th be a Yoga Karaka?
By BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17, yes, when the lord of a kendra or trikona joins or aspects it, subject to Sl. 15 on lords that also own an evil house. The app does not test the rule.
Why does the app show testing?
Its favourable lines need a dignity the engine never gives Rahu, and its Dasha rule passes for Rahu only in the 1st house. Both are defaults, not findings about your chart.
Which signs are better for Rahu in the 4th?
Chamatkar Chintamani, as quoted, names Aries, Cancer and Virgo and says the person will then become a king. Other books give other sign lists, set out above, and the app grades no sign for Rahu.
Do Rahu and Ketu in the 4th mean the same thing?
In the Bhrigu Sutras the sutra is shared word for word. The Other Views it quotes are separate and differ; see Ketu in the 4th house.
What does Saravali say?
Nothing for this house. Its chapter on planets in houses has no line for either node, and its two Rahu lines elsewhere concern the 3rd, 6th, 11th and the Ascendant.
What does Ketu in the 10th add?
It is always opposite and aspects the 4th, and by the agent rule it is one of the voices Rahu can carry. See Ketu in the 10th house.
Does Rahu transiting my 4th house mean the same?
No. The app counts transits from the Moon, and a node in the 4th from the Moon is a separate reading from a natal Rahu in the 4th from the Lagna.
