The 4th house is the bottom of the chart: the point of the sky directly under your feet at the moment of birth. The classical texts place there the things a person stands on and returns to. Home, mother, land, the vehicle in the yard, relatives, and the plain feeling of being comfortable all belong to it. One of its Sanskrit names, Sukha Bhava, means the house of happiness. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) prefers another name, Bandhu Bhava, the house of relatives. They are the same house, the fourth sign counted from your Lagna.
This page sets out what the texts actually say about it, sloka by sloka, and how this app computes it. The main source is BPHS, which gives the house its own chapter (Ch. 15) and twelve slokas on its lord (Ch. 24). Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras are used for the planets placed in it. Where the sources disagree, the disagreement is shown. Where they are silent, so is this page. To follow along, open your chart in the birth chart calculator. You need a birth time, because houses do not exist without an Ascendant.
What the 4th house signifies
BPHS lists the house in a single sloka, Ch. 11 Sl. 5. Six things are to be judged from Bandhu Bhava: conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, and lands and buildings. That short list is the whole primary definition.
Saravali gives the house more names than any other except the 10th. In its Rasi chapter (Sl. 26-31) the 4th is called Bandhava and Griha (relatives and house), Vesma (dwelling), Sukha (happiness), Jala (water), Patala (the nether world) and Hibuka. Jala and Patala are worth noticing. They describe the position of the house, not a life topic: the 4th is the lowest point of the chart, below the horizon, and the names say so.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentary in this corpus gives a longer, more modern list. It keeps mother, home, residence and vehicles, and adds the native place, the domestic environment, private affairs, fields, farms, orchards, mines, ancestral property, hidden treasure, wells, rivers and lakes, milk, and academic education. Education is the notable addition. BPHS Ch. 11 puts learning in the 5th house, not the 4th, so a statement that 'the 4th house shows education' follows the later tradition rather than Parashara's list. This page reports both and does not merge them.
| Source | What it places in the 4th house |
|---|---|
| BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5 | Conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings |
| Saravali, Rasi chapter Sl. 26-31 | Names only: Bandhava, Griha, Vesma, Sukha, Jala, Patala, Bandhu, Hibuka |
| Bhrigu Sutras, house significations | Mother, home and native place, private life, vehicles, farmland, mines, ancestral property, hidden treasure, water bodies, milk, academic education |
| This app (house card title) | 'Home & mother', with the short line 'comfort, property, roots' |
Where the house sits in the structure of a chart
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 sorts the twelve houses into groups, and the 4th belongs to two of them. First, it is a Kendra, an angle, together with the Lagna, the 7th and the 10th. The same sloka identifies the 7th as the descendant and the 10th as mid-heaven; the 4th is the fourth corner of that cross, the nadir. Second, the 4th and the 8th are called Chaturasras. Saravali uses the same word for the same two houses.
Being an angle matters in practice because so many rules are written in terms of angles. A house lord 'in a Kendra' is in a good position throughout BPHS. A planet in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra is the condition for the Panchamahapurusha yogas. And the lord of a Kendra joined to the lord of a trine is the root of the best-known Raj Yoga. In each of those rules the 4th counts exactly as much as the 1st, 7th or 10th.
The nadir and directional strength
The 4th house is also one of the four reference points for Dig Bal, directional strength. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives the arithmetic: subtract the 4th house (the text itself glosses it as 'Nadir') from the longitudes of the Sun and Mars, the 7th from Jupiter and Mercury, the 10th from Venus and the Moon, and the Lagna from Saturn; if the result exceeds 180 degrees take it from 360; divide by 3. The house subtracted is the planet's zero point. So the Sun and Mars have no directional strength at the nadir and the most at the 10th, while the Moon and Venus have none at the 10th and the most in the 4th. This app's Shad Bala calculator uses the same pairing: its directional component peaks for the Moon and Venus in the 4th house, and for the Sun and Mars in the 10th.
Why this matters for reading the house
It explains a pattern you will see in the planet table below. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras are kind to the Moon and Venus in the 4th and hard on the Sun and Mars there. Directional strength is one classical mechanism that points the same way. It is a strength measure, not a verdict.
Which planet rules your 4th house
This app uses whole-sign houses, so the 4th house is the entire fourth sign from your rising sign, and its lord is that sign's ruler. Almost every sloka on this page is about that lord, so find it first. If you do not know your rising sign, the Lagna calculator gives it.
| Rising sign | 4th house sign | 4th lord |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Cancer | Moon |
| Taurus | Leo | Sun |
| Gemini | Virgo | Mercury |
| Cancer | Libra | Venus |
| Leo | Scorpio | Mars |
| Virgo | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| Libra | Capricorn | Saturn |
| Scorpio | Aquarius | Saturn |
| Sagittarius | Pisces | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | Aries | Mars |
| Aquarius | Taurus | Venus |
| Pisces | Gemini | Mercury |
Except for the Sun and Moon, every planet rules two signs, so the 4th lord usually brings a second house with it. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising it is also the Lagna lord; for Virgo and Pisces rising it also rules the 7th, a second angle; for Leo, Libra and Aquarius rising it also rules a trine. A planet's results for the 4th are never separable from the other house it owns.
How BPHS judges the 4th house (Ch. 15)
Ch. 15 has fourteen slokas. They fall into five groups: the dwelling, comforts in general, relatives, the mother, and vehicles. They are paraphrased here in order.
The dwelling (Sl. 2 and 4)
- Sl. 2: residential comfort is complete when the 4th is occupied by its own lord, or by the Lagna lord, and is aspected by a benefic. Note the two conditions. Occupation alone is not the rule; the benefic aspect is part of it.
- Sl. 4: when the 10th lord joins the 4th lord in an angle or a trine, the text speaks of acquiring fine houses. This is the first of several places where the 4th and 10th are read as a pair, the two ends of one axis.
Comforts in general (Sl. 3)
Sl. 3 is unexpected. It makes the comforts of land, vehicles, houses and musical instruments depend on the 5th lord being in its own house, its own Navamsa or its exaltation. The corpus translation reads 'Putr's Lord', the 5th lord, in a chapter otherwise about the 4th. This page reports the sloka as printed and does not correct it. The Navamsa (D9) calculator shows the Navamsa sign of every planet.
Relatives (Sl. 5)
Sl. 5: Mercury in the Lagna, with a 4th lord that is itself a benefic and is aspected by another benefic, gives honour from one's relatives. Three conditions, all of which must hold.
The mother (Sl. 6-7)
- Sl. 6: a benefic in the 4th, the 4th lord in its exaltation sign, and a strong significator of the mother, together indicate a long-lived mother.
- Sl. 7: the 4th lord in an angle, Venus also in an angle and Mercury exalted, together indicate the mother's happiness.
Both slokas stack three conditions. Neither says that a single placement decides anything about a parent, and neither states the reverse case. Reading 'no benefic in the 4th' as a statement about a mother's lifespan is not in the text.
Cattle, and one sloka this page does not apply (Sl. 8-9)
Sl. 8 is a specific four-planet pattern: the Sun in the 4th, the Moon and Saturn in the 9th and Mars in the 11th, said to give cows and buffaloes, the working wealth of the period. Sl. 9 ties a movable sign on the 4th, with its lord and Mars together in the 6th or 8th, to a speech disability. That is a medical statement resting on one sloka. It is named here for completeness and is not applied by this app; it is not medical advice and should not be read as a diagnosis.
Vehicles (Sl. 10-14)
The last five slokas are about conveyances, and they are the most detailed timing statements in the chapter. Venus is named as the significator.
| Condition in Sl. 10-14 | Stated result |
|---|---|
| Lagna lord a benefic; 4th lord debilitated or in the 11th; Venus in the 12th | Conveyances in the 12th year |
| Sun in the 4th; 4th lord exalted and with Venus | Conveyances in the 32nd year |
| 4th lord joined to the 10th lord in the 4th lord's exaltation Navamsa | Conveyances in the 42nd year |
| Exchange of signs between the 11th and 4th lords | Conveyances in the 12th year |
| A benefic in the 4th, aspecting it, or joined to or aspecting its lord | Happiness from vehicles, free of accident |
| A malefic in the same relationships | Losses and accidents involving vehicles |
The age figures are single-sloka statements with no stated method behind them, and this app does not compute them. The closing rule is the one that generalises: benefics or malefics connected to the house and its lord.
When any house prospers: the general rule
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 gives the test that applies to every house, and it is the frame for everything above. A house does well when it is joined or aspected by a benefic, or when its lord is in a youthful or alert state (the text names the Yuva, Prabuddha and Kumara avasthas) or sits in the 10th. A house is harmed when its lord does not aspect it, or is with a malefic, or is with the lord of the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th, or is defeated in a planetary war, or is in an aged, dead or sleeping state. For the 4th house, the words 'or sits in the 10th' have a neat consequence: a 4th lord in the 10th is directly opposite its own house and aspects it, since every planet aspects the 7th from itself.
The 4th lord in each of the twelve houses
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 37-48 gives one sloka for each placement of the 4th lord. They are paraphrased below. Some slokas include remarks on a person's character, spouse or body that are sweeping even by the standard of the text; those clauses are left out, and the row says so where it happens.
| 4th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | What the sloka says |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 37 | Learning, good qualities, ornaments, lands, conveyances and happiness from the mother |
| 2nd | Sl. 38 | Pleasures, wealth of all kinds, family life, honour, an adventurous streak; also called cunning |
| 3rd | Sl. 39 | Courage, people in service, generosity, self-earned wealth, freedom from disease |
| 4th | Sl. 40 | A minister with wealth of all kinds: skilful, honourable, learned, happy |
| 5th | Sl. 41 | Happy and liked by all, devout, honourable, with self-earned wealth |
| 6th | Sl. 42 | Lacking happiness from the mother, quick to anger, independent in action (harsher character clauses omitted) |
| 7th | Sl. 43 | A high degree of education, giving up ancestral property, silent in an assembly |
| 8th | Sl. 44 | Lacking domestic and other comforts and much parental happiness (one clause omitted) |
| 9th | Sl. 45 | Dear to everyone, devout, honourable, with every kind of happiness |
| 10th | Sl. 46 | Honours from rulers, great contentment, pleasures, mastery of the senses |
| 11th | Sl. 47 | Liberal, charitable and helpful to others; with a fear of hidden illness |
| 12th | Sl. 48 | Lacking domestic and other comforts; called indolent |
The pattern is the general one. The lord in the Lagna, in its own house, in a trine (5th, 9th) or in the 10th reads well. The lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, the Dusthanas, reads as comfort withheld. Two rows repay a second look. The 7th is an angle, yet Sl. 43 pairs high education with giving up one's patrimony: a good result and a loss in one line. And the 11th, the house of gains, carries a health caution. The table does not reduce to 'good house, good result'. For the house the lord sits in, see the pages on the 5th, 9th, 6th and 12th houses.
Every other house lord placed in the 4th
The same chapter can be read the other way round: what happens when another house's lord comes to sit in the 4th. Each row below is one sloka from Ch. 24, with the same omissions.
| Lord of | BPHS Ch. 24 | When placed in the 4th |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 4 | Happiness from both parents, many siblings, charm and good qualities |
| 2nd | Sl. 16 | Wealth of all kinds; if exalted and with Jupiter, compared to a king |
| 3rd | Sl. 28 | Happy, wealthy and intelligent (a clause on the spouse omitted) |
| 5th | Sl. 52 | Happiness from the mother, wealth, intelligence; a ruler, minister or teacher |
| 6th | Sl. 64 | Lacking happiness from the mother; intelligent and very rich (character clauses omitted) |
| 7th | Sl. 76 | Truthful, intelligent and religious (clauses on the spouse and on teeth omitted) |
| 8th | Sl. 88 | Deprived of house, land and happiness; early separation from the mother |
| 9th | Sl. 100 | Houses, conveyances and happiness, wealth of all kinds, devotion to the mother |
| 10th | Sl. 112 | Happy, attentive to the mother's welfare, master of conveyances, lands and houses |
| 11th | Sl. 124 | Gains from maternal relatives, visits to shrines, happiness of house and land |
| 12th | Sl. 136 | Lacking happiness from the mother; steady losses in land, conveyances and houses |
The lords of the 9th and 10th bring those things; the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th remove them. The 6th lord's row is the mixed one, withholding maternal happiness while granting wealth.
The mother: house, planet and the 4th from the Moon
BPHS never reads a relative from a house alone. Ch. 32, on the fixed significations of the planets, says the stronger of the Moon and Mars indicates the mother, and (Sl. 22-24) that the 4th house counted from the Moon is to be read for her, just as the 9th from the Sun is read for the father. Ch. 15 Sl. 6 uses the same idea when it asks for a strong 'indicator of mother' alongside the house and its lord. So there are three places to look, not one: the 4th from the Lagna and its lord, the Moon itself, and the 4th sign from the Moon. The Moon sign calculator gives the Moon's sign so you can count from it.
Planets in the 4th house
Saravali Ch. 30 gives one sloka for each of the seven planets in the 4th. The Bhrigu Sutras give several sutras each, usually with conditions attached to the 4th lord. The two are set side by side below, paraphrased. Each planet has its own page, linked in the first column, where the conditions are worked through.
| Planet | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 5: without conveyances and relatives, loss of the paternal house and wealth, service under a poor master; a heart ailment is named | Sutras 43-50: proud and at odds with the public; from the 32nd year a favourable turn, respect, learning and position, though not wealth |
| Moon | Sl. 17: relatives, household goods and conveyances, charitable, fond of travel by water; neither very happy nor miserable | Sutras 19-24: very high status, many conveyances, prosperity in land and money, plentiful food; the mother's health is the stated weak point unless the Moon is full or in Cancer |
| Mars | Sl. 29: without relatives, goods and conveyances, living in others' houses, distressed | Sutras 26-33: domestic disturbance, no land of his own, strained relations with near relatives; good personal health |
| Mercury | Sl. 41: money, relatives, good fortune, conveyances and learning | Sutras 32-37: learned, patient, happy through parents, conveyances from the 16th year; reversed if Mercury is with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn |
| Jupiter | Sl. 53: relatives, conveyance, happiness, intelligence, pleasures and wealth | Sutras 19-23: happy, wise, of good conduct, a landholder; without land or conveyance if Jupiter is joined or aspected by a malefic |
| Venus | Sl. 65: relatives, friends and happiness, conveyances, beauty, wealth and good fortune | Sutras 23-28: intelligent, forgiving, happy, conveyances from the 30th year; without lands or conveyances if the 4th lord is weak or afflicted |
| Saturn | Sl. 77: without relatives, conveyances, wealth and happiness, unwell in childhood | Sutras 14-21: hardship concerning the mother, cancelled when Saturn is in its own sign or exalted in the 4th, or is the Lagna lord |
| Rahu / Ketu | Not covered: Ch. 30 treats the seven planets only | Sutras 9-10: many ornaments, service of others; distress to the mother only when joined by a malefic, not when joined by a benefic |
Three things stand out. First, the split is by planet: the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are given the house's good things, the Sun, Mars and Saturn are denied them. That is the benefic and malefic rule of Ch. 15 Sl. 14 applied one planet at a time. Second, the two books do not fully agree. Saravali gives the Sun in the 4th nothing good; the Bhrigu Sutras give it a marked improvement from the 32nd year, the same age BPHS Ch. 15 attaches to the Sun in the 4th with an exalted 4th lord. Saravali's Moon is 'neither very happy nor miserable'; the Bhrigu Sutras' Moon is close to the best placement in the book. Third, nearly every Bhrigu result is conditional on the 4th lord or on dignity. Saturn's sutras reverse outright in Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra.
Named combinations that involve the 4th house
- Kahal Yog (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10). The 4th lord and Jupiter in mutual angles with a strong Lagna lord; or the 4th lord in its own or exaltation sign joined to the 10th lord. The stated result is energy, a spirit of adventure and command over a few villages.
- Raj Yogas through the 4th lord (Ch. 39). Sl. 35: an exchange between the 4th and 10th lords, with both aspecting the 5th and 9th lords. Sl. 36: the lords of the 5th, 10th, 4th and Lagna together in the 9th. Sl. 37: the 4th or 10th lord joined to the 5th or 9th lord. Sl. 29-31 also list the 4th lord among the planets whose aspect on the Lagna contributes to a Raj Yoga.
- Nabhash Yogas (Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11). All planets confined to the 4th and 10th form Vihag Yog. All benefics in the 4th and 10th with all malefics in the 1st and 7th form Yav Yog; the reverse arrangement forms Vajr Yog. All planets in the 4th, 8th and 12th form one of the three Hal Yogas.
- Argala on the 4th (Ch. 31). A planet causing unobstructed Argala and aspecting the 4th is read as residences, quadrupeds and relatives.
- The pada of the house (Ch. 29). Each house has an Arudha; the 4th's is called Matru or Sukh Pad, commonly written A4.
BPHS Ch. 39 holds more than thirty competing Raj Yoga rules, and this app deliberately does not test them all. What it does test is the single cleanest one, the Kendra-Kona link of Ch. 41 Sl. 28, in which the 4th lord takes part as an angle lord. The page on what a yoga in your chart means explains why a detected yoga is a condition met, not a promise.
How this app computes and reads your 4th house
- House boundaries. The chart is whole-sign: the 4th house is the entire fourth sign from your rising sign, not a band centred on the astronomical nadir. Without a birth time there is no Ascendant and no houses at all, as the page on an unknown birth time explains.
- The house card. In the Kundali view the 4th is titled 'Home & mother'. The card names the sign, its ruler, the ruler's dignity and the house the ruler sits in. Its tone comes from one number, the ruler's dignity score: 1 or more reads as favourable, -1 or less as testing, anything between as neutral. That is a narrow test of the lord's condition, not a full judgement under Ch. 15.
- Planets in the house. Each planet's house reading is drawn from the Bhrigu Sutras and gated by dignity, so a dignified planet in the 4th shows the favourable side of its sutras and a poorly placed one the testing side.
- Yogas and doshas. The yogas calculator treats the 4th as an angle in the Panchamahapurusha and Gaj Kesari checks, counts the 4th lord as an angle lord in Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga, and flags Kendradhipathya Dosha when a natural benefic owns an angle other than the Lagna. Mars in the 4th is one of the six houses that trigger Mangal Dosha in this app, graded Mild there; see what Mangal Dosha is and is not.
- Divisional charts. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns fortunes to the Chaturthamsa, the four-fold division, and conveyances to the Shodashamsa. The Chaturthamsa (D4) and Shodashamsa (D16) calculators compute both.
- The pada and Argala. The Bhava Padas calculator lists A4 with the other eleven, and the Argala calculator shows which planets intervene on each house.
What the app does not do with this house
It does not compute the vehicle ages of Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14, it does not apply Sl. 9, and it does not turn any 4th-house pattern into a statement about a parent's health or about whether you will own property. Positions come from the app's own astronomical routines with the Lahiri ayanamsa, as the methodology page describes.
Timing: when the 4th house becomes active
A house is always in the chart; it comes forward when its lord runs a period. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 gives each house lord's dasha one line, and the 4th lord's is among the plainest: acquisition of house and land. This app carries that line across. When your running Mahadasha lord rules the 4th, the dasha card reads 'gains in property, home comforts and vehicles'. Find your current period with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, and see what a Mahadasha is for how the periods are built.
Ch. 47, on the results of each planet's dasha, mentions the house several times. In the Sun's period, association with the 4th lord is read as comfort from conveyances. A strong Moon associated with the lord of the 10th, 9th or 4th is listed among the conditions for a prosperous Moon period. And Sl. 85-87 single out Venus placed in the 4th as lord of the 9th or 10th, which happens for Aquarius and Capricorn rising when Venus sits in Taurus or Aries respectively, as a period of authority and public works. The sub-period chapters repeatedly list the 4th among the good positions for a sub-period lord, alongside the angles, trines and the 11th. Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantardasha.
The sign-based systems have their own line. BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 137-138, on the Chakr Dasha, gives the period of the sign in the 4th good relations with kin, land, houses, conveyances and sound health, in full if the sign is a benefic one and mixed if it is a malefic one. That belongs to a Rasi dasha and should not be carried into Vimshottari. The alternate dashas calculator shows the conditional systems this app computes.
Transits use a different frame. This app counts transit houses from the natal Moon, not from the Lagna, so 'Saturn in the 4th' in the Gochar calculator means the fourth sign from your Moon. That particular transit has its own name, Ardha Ashtama Sani, and the Ashtama Sani calculator dates it. It is a statement about the Moon's fourth sign, which BPHS Ch. 32 links to the mother and to peace of mind; it is not a statement about your natal 4th house. The Timing feature shows the dasha and transit layers side by side.
Common misreadings
- 'An empty 4th house means no home or no happiness.' No text says so. Most houses in any chart are empty. Ch. 15 is written almost entirely in terms of the 4th lord, and the Bhrigu commentary states the principle directly: a house cannot prosper unless its lord is well placed.
- 'A malefic in the 4th ruins the home.' Saravali's slokas for the Sun, Mars and Saturn are harsh, but the Bhrigu Sutras cancel Saturn's results in its own or exaltation sign, give the Sun a turn for the better from the 32nd year, and make most outcomes depend on the 4th lord.
- 'The 4th house tells you about your mother's lifespan.' Ch. 15 Sl. 6 needs three conditions together and states only the favourable case. BPHS also reads the mother from the Moon and from the 4th from the Moon. One placement settles nothing.
- 'The 4th house is education.' That is the later list. BPHS Ch. 11 puts learning in the 5th. The one Ch. 24 sloka that mentions education for the 4th lord places it in the 7th.
- 'The 4th lord in an angle is always good.' Sl. 43 of Ch. 24, for the 7th, pairs education with the loss of ancestral property.
- 'Mars in the 4th means a serious Mangal Dosha.' In this app the 4th is one of six trigger houses and is graded Mild. The count is from the Lagna and needs a birth time.
- 'My 4th house in the transit report is my 4th house.' Transit houses here are counted from the Moon. Check which frame a statement uses before comparing two readings.
Check it in your own chart
- Open the birth chart calculator with your date, exact time and place. Note the rising sign and count four signs from it, inclusive: that sign is your 4th house.
- Find the 4th lord in the table above and note its house. In the 4th, another angle or a trine is the favourable position throughout Ch. 15; in the 6th, 8th or 12th it is not. Read its row in the Ch. 24 table.
- Note the lord's dignity. Exaltation is asked for in Sl. 6 and Sl. 10-14; debilitation appears once, in the first vehicle sloka, and even there with a good result.
- List any planets in the 4th and any that aspect it. Benefic or malefic is the closing rule of Ch. 15. Read each planet's row in the Saravali and Bhrigu table, then its own page for the conditions.
- Look at the 10th lord. Sl. 4, the 42nd-year sloka, Kahal Yog and the Ch. 39 Raj Yogas all need the 4th and 10th lords together or exchanged.
- For the mother, repeat the first four steps from the Moon: its sign, its strength in the Shad Bala calculator, and the fourth sign from it.
- Check whether the 4th lord is running a period now in the dasha calculator. If you want the pieces weighed together in plain language, ask in the AI Life Chat, which grounds its answer in the same computed chart.
Questions people ask
- Is it Sukha Bhava or Bandhu Bhava?
- Both, and several more. BPHS calls the house Bandhu (relatives) throughout. Saravali lists Sukha, Bandhu, Bandhava, Griha, Vesma, Jala, Patala and Hibuka as names for the same house. Sukha, happiness, is the name most often used today. BPHS itself uses 'Sukh' once, as an alternative name for the house's pada in Ch. 29.
- Which planet is the significator of the 4th house?
- It depends on the topic, and BPHS names them separately. For the mother, Ch. 32 gives the stronger of the Moon and Mars, and the 4th from the Moon. For conveyances, Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 names Venus. For houses and land the chapter works through the 4th lord and the 10th lord and does not name a separate planet.
- My 4th house is empty. Is that a problem?
- No. An empty house is the normal case, and no source used here treats it as a defect. Read the 4th lord: its house, its dignity, and whether benefics or malefics join or aspect it. That is what Ch. 15 does in almost every sloka.
- Which planets do well in the 4th house?
- By the sources on this page, the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are given relatives, conveyances and happiness there, and the Moon and Venus also gain full directional strength in the 4th under BPHS Ch. 27. The Sun, Mars and Saturn are given the opposite, with exceptions for dignity. Start with Venus in the 4th or Saturn in the 4th to see how conditional those statements are.
- Can the 4th house tell me when I will buy a house or a vehicle?
- The texts give windows, not dates. BPHS Ch. 48 assigns house and land to the dasha of the 4th lord, and Ch. 15 gives specific ages for vehicles under narrow conditions. This app shows you when the 4th lord's periods run; it does not compute the Ch. 15 ages and does not predict a purchase.
- Why are the 4th and 10th houses so often read together?
- They are opposite angles, so a planet in one aspects the other, and BPHS pairs their lords repeatedly: for fine houses (Ch. 15 Sl. 4), for Kahal Yog (Ch. 36) and for Raj Yogas (Ch. 39 Sl. 35-37). The page on the 10th house covers the other end of the axis.
- Does the 4th house change in the divisional charts?
- Each divisional chart has its own fourth sign, but BPHS assigns topics to whole divisions rather than to houses within them: fortunes to the Chaturthamsa and conveyances to the Shodashamsa (Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8). The usual check is whether the 4th lord keeps its dignity in those charts and in the Navamsa.
- I do not know my birth time. Can I still read my 4th house?
- Not the house itself, because houses are counted from the Ascendant and the Ascendant needs a time. You can still read the Moon and the fourth sign from it, which BPHS uses for the mother, and you can still see transits, which this app counts from the Moon. See what you can and cannot read without a birth time.
Birth Chart (Kundli)
All nine grahas by sign, degree and nakshatra, with houses when the birth time is known and the place resolves to coordinates.
