BPHS Ch. 70 judges land from Mars, and the 4th house is the house of land, buildings, conveyances and the mother. A Mars in the 4th puts the planet of land in the house of land. It also puts Mars where it has no directional strength at all: BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Sun and Mars from the nadir, so their Dig Bala is zero there. The consequence: Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras are kind to the Moon and Venus in the 4th, the two strongest there by direction, and hard on the Sun and Mars, the two weakest.
This page sets out how hard, and with what exceptions. Saravali gives no relatives, goods or conveyances; the Bhrigu Sutras give domestic disturbance and no land, and land and conveyances back when Mars is in its own sign or exalted with a benefic, or in a friend's sign. The same placement can form Ruchaka Yoga and always triggers this app's Mangal Dosha. It is the mirror of the Sun in the 4th. For the planet see Mars in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 4th house, Sukha Bhava.
Sources, and the mother
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Some verses speak of a parent's health or death; they are reported as the texts' statements. Nothing here is a statement about your parents, your home or whether you will own property.
The house at the bottom of the chart
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5 lists conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, and lands and buildings. Saravali (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31) gives the house names that describe its position, Jala and Patala, water and the nether world, alongside Bandhava, Griha and Sukha. BPHS Ch. 15, the house chapter, falls into five groups: the dwelling, comforts in general, relatives, the mother and vehicles. The 4th is a Kendra and, with the 8th, a Chaturasra.
Mars has two links to the house before any verse is read. BPHS Ch. 70 judges land from Mars. And BPHS Ch. 32 makes the stronger of the Moon and Mars the indicator of the mother, while the 4th is the mother's house. So Mars in the 4th is one of the mother's two candidate significators in her house, and the planet of land in the house of land.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 29
"If Mars is posited in 4th, the native will be devoid of relatives, paraphernalia and conveyances, be very miserable, will live in others houses and be distressed" (p. 102). Every clause removes one of the house's items. With Saravali's Sun and Saturn verses it is one of three that deny the house's comforts.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 26-33
The sutras (pp. 49-50), as the text's statements: adversities in the family causing domestic disturbances; "the father may die in the eighth year of the native's" and the mother "always be in bad health"; the native in good health but with no land of his own, poor, in a dilapidated house, on bad terms with near relatives, living away from his native place. With Mercury, living in somebody else's house. In its own sign or exalted and joined with a benefic, or in a friend's sign: conveyances, lands and a long-lived mother. Debilitated and with malefics or the 8th lord: loss of the mother early. The commentator (p. 50) calls Mars "one of the worst malefics" here, and his Note (p. 51) says the lord of the 4th must also be weighed. So the sutras reverse the land clause with dignity and a benefic, and keep a good word for the native's own health throughout.
| Source | Home and land | Relatives | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 29 | No paraphernalia or conveyances; living in others' houses; very miserable | Without relatives | None in the verse |
| Bhrigu Sutras 26-33 | Domestic disturbance, no land of his own, poor; good personal health | Inimical near relatives; the mother in bad health | Own sign or exalted with a benefic, or a friend's sign: land, conveyances, a long-lived mother |
| BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 | A malefic connected with the 4th: losses and accidents involving vehicles | - | A benefic in the same relationships: happiness from vehicles |
| This app, phMars4F | Property, vehicles; "a genuine wealth combination when well-placed" | A long-lived mother | Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly dignity |
| This app, phMars4U | Domestic instability and a strained home life | - | Any other dignity |
The app's favourable string names a long-lived mother. That clause is in the Bhrigu Sutras' exception (own sign or exalted with a benefic, or a friend's sign), not in Saravali's verse; the app applies it on dignity alone. It is the app's wording, not a statement about anyone's mother.
No directional strength at the nadir
The arithmetic of BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7: subtract the 4th house from the longitude of the Sun or Mars, take the result from 360 if over 180, and divide by three. At the 4th the result is zero. This app's Shad Bala gives Mars none of its 4 directional points in the 4th house and all of them in the 10th. The Shad Bala calculator shows the figure.
This is one classical mechanism behind the pattern in the verses, not a verdict: directional strength is one of six Shad Bala components. A Mars in the 4th can be in its own sign (Leo rising, Mars in Scorpio; Capricorn rising, Mars in Aries) or exalted (Libra rising, Mars in Capricorn), and the 4th, as an angle, gives full Kendradi Bal at the same time.
BPHS Ch. 15 and a malefic in the 4th
- Sl. 2: residential comfort is complete when the 4th is occupied by its own lord, or by the Lagna lord, and aspected by a benefic. Mars is the 4th lord for Leo and Capricorn rising, and the Lagna lord for Aries and Scorpio rising; in the 4th it meets the occupant half for all four. The benefic aspect is the other half.
- Sl. 10-14, closing with the vehicle rule: a benefic in the 4th, aspecting it, or joined to or aspecting its lord gives happiness from vehicles, free of accident; a malefic in the same relationships "will cause losses, concerning vehicles and reduce one to severe accidents". Mars is a malefic, so this is the line a literal reading reaches for, with the 4th lord deciding more.
- Sl. 6: a long-lived mother needs a benefic in the 4th, an exalted 4th lord and a strong significator of the mother together. Mars is not a benefic; it can be the strong significator, as the stronger of the Moon and Mars.
- Sl. 9 ties a movable sign on the 4th, with its lord and Mars together in the 6th or 8th, to dumbness. This page names it and does not apply it; it concerns Mars in the 6th or 8th, not the 4th, and it is not medical advice.
The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator closes his Note on Mars in the 4th (p. 51) with the principle that governs the house: "the disposition of the lord of the fourth should also be taken into account". With Mars in the 4th, the 4th lord is the lord of Mars's sign, the same planet whose position decides Mars's dignity in this engine.
Ruchaka Yoga and Mangal Dosha
BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 form Ruchaka Yoga when Mars is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle, and the 4th is an angle. In the 4th that means Leo rising (Mars in Scorpio), Capricorn rising (Mars in Aries) or Libra rising (Mars exalted in Capricorn). The yogas calculator lists it when present.
BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47 does list the 4th: Mars in the 12th, 4th, 7th or 8th from the Lagna, with no benefic aspecting or joining it, is the yoga the chapter reads as bereavement in marriage, applied to men equally and lapsing when both partners have it (Sl. 48-49). This app's Mangal Dosha check takes six houses, has no benefic exception, and grades the 4th Mild, worded as "friction in partnership timing, not a fixed outcome". The difference matters most when a benefic aspects Mars: BPHS's condition then fails and the engine still reports the dosha, as in the worked chart below. The Mangal Dosha calculator shows the row, and Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not covers the rule.
Three of Ruchaka's four angles are also Mangal Dosha houses, and 76.7 per cent of the Ruchaka charts in this app's 20,000-chart sample carried the dosha. A Mars in the 4th in its own or exaltation sign always carries both.
Mars's aspects from the 4th
From the 4th, aspectedHouses('mars', 4) returns [10, 7, 11]: the 10th by the 7th aspect, the 7th and 11th by Mars's special 4th and 8th aspects (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). So a Mars in the 4th looks across the axis at the 10th, where its directional strength would be full, and also at the house of partnership and the house of gains. The engine counts each as a malefic aspect in Shad Bala. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for these aspects from the 4th. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator traces the father clause to Mars aspecting the 10th, the 2nd from the 9th (p. 50). See the 10th house and the 7th house.
Two lordships for every rising sign
Mars owns Aries and Scorpio. It is in your 4th when it occupies the fourth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 4th, so Mars there carries two.
| Ascendant | Mars's sign | Natural dignity | Mars rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 4th | Ch. 34 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Cancer | Debilitated | 1st, 8th | Sl. 4: paternal and maternal happiness, many brothers, lustful, charming. Sl. 88: deprived of its mother; devoid of a house, lands and happiness; betrays friends | Helpful despite the 8th |
| Taurus | Leo | Friendly (Sun) | 7th, 12th | Sl. 76: the wife not under his control; truthful, intelligent, religious; dental diseases. Sl. 136: devoid of maternal happiness; daily losses in lands, conveyances and houses | A Maraka |
| Gemini | Virgo | Enemy (Mercury) | 6th, 11th | Sl. 64: devoid of maternal happiness, a talebearer, jealous, very rich. Sl. 124: gains from maternal relatives, visits to shrines, house and lands | Malefic |
| Cancer | Libra | Neutral (Venus) | 5th, 10th | Sl. 52: maternal happiness, wealth; a king, minister or preceptor. Sl. 112: interested in his mother's welfare, lord of conveyances, lands and houses | Yoga Karaka |
| Leo | Scorpio | Own | 4th, 9th | Sl. 40: a minister with all kinds of wealth, learned, well disposed to his spouse. Sl. 100: houses, conveyances, devoted to his mother | Auspicious |
| Virgo | Sagittarius | Friendly (Jupiter) | 3rd, 8th | Sl. 28: happy, wealthy, intelligent, but a wicked spouse. Sl. 88: deprived of its mother; devoid of house, lands, happiness | Malefic |
| Libra | Capricorn | Exalted | 2nd, 7th | Sl. 16: all kinds of wealth; exalted with Jupiter, "equal to a king". Sl. 76: the wife not under his control; truthful, religious | Malefic and a Maraka |
| Scorpio | Aquarius | Neutral (Saturn) | 1st, 6th | Sl. 4: paternal and maternal happiness. Sl. 64: devoid of maternal happiness, very rich | Neutral |
| Sagittarius | Pisces | Friendly (Jupiter) | 5th, 12th | Sl. 52: maternal happiness, wealth. Sl. 136: daily losses in lands, conveyances and houses | Auspicious |
| Capricorn | Aries | Own; Moolatrikona to 12 deg | 4th, 11th | Sl. 40: a minister with all kinds of wealth. Sl. 124: gains from maternal relatives, house and lands | Malefic |
| Aquarius | Taurus | Neutral (Venus) | 3rd, 10th | Sl. 28: happy, wealthy, a wicked spouse. Sl. 112: lord of conveyances, lands and houses | Malefic and a Maraka |
| Pisces | Gemini | Enemy (Mercury) | 2nd, 9th | Sl. 16: all kinds of wealth. Sl. 100: houses, conveyances, devoted to his mother | Auspicious; a Yoga with Jupiter |
Read as a column: the lords of the 9th and 10th bringing home, land and the mother's happiness, and the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th removing them. For Mars, Cancer, Leo, Aquarius and Pisces rising bring two warm rows into the 4th; Aries and Virgo rising bring the 8th lord's Sl. 88; Taurus and Sagittarius the 12th lord's Sl. 136.
Leo rising: the 4th lord at home
For Leo rising Mars rules the 4th and 9th, an angle and a trine, and sits in Scorpio, its own sign, in the 4th. Ch. 15 Sl. 2's occupant condition is met; Ch. 24 Sl. 40 and Sl. 100 are among the warmest rows; Ruchaka forms. There is a disagreement on the label: by BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 a planet owning an angle and a trine is a Yoga Karaka, yet the Leo sloka (Sl. 29-30) says only "auspicious"; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator calls Leo the ascendant "for which Mars is a yoga karaka planet" (p. 50). The worked chart below is this case.
The 4th lord, through the houses
With Mars in the 4th, the 4th lord is the lord of Mars's sign (Mars itself for Leo and Capricorn rising). BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 37-48 read it through the houses, and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator says it must be weighed with Mars (p. 51).
| 4th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | The verse |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 37 | Learning, virtues, ornaments, lands, conveyances, maternal happiness |
| 2nd | Sl. 38 | Pleasures, all kinds of wealth, family life, honour; adventurous, cunning |
| 3rd | Sl. 39 | Valorous, servants, liberal, charitable, self-earned wealth, free from diseases |
| 4th | Sl. 40 | A minister with all kinds of wealth; skilful, learned, well disposed to his spouse |
| 5th | Sl. 41 | Happy and liked by all, devoted to Vishnu, self-earned wealth |
| 6th | Sl. 42 | Devoid of maternal happiness, given to anger, a thief and a conjurer, indisposed |
| 7th | Sl. 43 | A high degree of education, sacrifices his patrimony, "akin to the dumb in an assembly" |
| 8th | Sl. 44 | Devoid of domestic and other comforts, little parental happiness, "equal to a neuter" |
| 9th | Sl. 45 | Dear to all, devoted to God, every kind of happiness |
| 10th | Sl. 46 | Royal honours, an alchemist, conquers his five senses |
| 11th | Sl. 47 | Fear of secret disease; liberal, charitable, helpful |
| 12th | Sl. 48 | Devoid of domestic and other comforts, vices, foolish, indolent |
The general pattern: Lagna, own house, trines and the 10th read well; the Dusthanas withhold comfort; and Sl. 43 pairs education with giving up patrimony. BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 add that any house does well when its lord sits in the 10th, which for the 4th lord means opposite its own house and aspecting it.
Yogas through the 4th lord
Several named combinations are built on the 4th. Kahal Yog (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10): the 4th lord and Jupiter in mutual angles with a strong Lagna lord, or the 4th lord in its own or exaltation sign joined to the 10th lord. For Leo and Capricorn rising Mars is the 4th lord; for Leo, in its own sign in the 4th, the second form needs Venus, the 10th lord, beside it. Ch. 39 Sl. 35-37 build Raj Yogas from the 4th and 10th lords exchanged or joined to the 5th or 9th lords. Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11 form Yav and Vajr Yog from benefics and malefics split between the 4th-10th and 1st-7th axes. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh one.
BPHS Ch. 7 assigns fortunes to the Chaturthamsa and conveyances to the Shodashamsa, both computed here: the Chaturthamsa (D4) calculator and the Shodashamsa (D16) calculator. They are second opinions on the house, not on Mars.
Saravali Ch. 25, by the sign Mars occupies
Saravali's chapter on Mars by sign (Ch. 25 Sl. 1-24, pp. 76-78) adds a temperament line through the sign in your 4th. A few lines touch the 4th house's own items directly. Cancer (Aries rising): lives in others' houses, deformed, sick, wealth through agriculture and water, repeatedly anguished, which repeats Saravali's 4th-house verse in another key. Scorpio (Leo rising): attached to trade, skilful, endowed with lands, sons and wife, though also "highly sinful" and troubled by weapons and wounds. Capricorn (Libra rising): wealthy, happy, famous, a protector. Aries (Capricorn rising): truthful, valorous, fond of adventure. Libra (Cancer rising): a wanderer, fortunate, earns only to lose. Gemini (Pisces rising): very learned, fond of foreign travel. The chapter is blunt and describes temperament rather than strength.
Saravali Ch. 15 reads Mars joined to other planets: with the Sun, valorous, dull-witted, a liar and fierce (Sl. 3); with the Moon, brave and an artisan in mud, skin and minerals, with "bloody imbalances" (Sl. 8); with Jupiter, intelligent and expert in speech (Sl. 14); with Saturn, deceitful and fond of quarrels (Sl. 16). A benefic sharing the 4th with Mars is also the benefic of BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 14 and of the Bhrigu Sutras' exception.
Mars's own significations explain why the 4th is so sensitive to it: BPHS Ch. 70 judges co-borns, strength, qualities and land from Mars, and Ch. 32 makes it, with the Moon, an indicator of the mother. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 rank it the most malefic of the natural malefics, and Ch. 27 Sl. 30-31 deduct one Rupa from any house it occupies. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator calls it "one of the worst malefics" in the 4th, yet finds Dhana Yogas when it is in its own sign or exalted there (Capricorn, Leo and Libra rising) and a Yoga Karaka for Leo (p. 50).
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Mars's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 4th is an angle, so dignity alone decides. Directional strength, the 4th lord and Ch. 15's malefic rule are not part of that line.
Mars's natural relations: Jupiter, the Moon and the Sun friends, Mercury an enemy, Venus and Saturn neutral; the temporary half from the chart. In the code read for this page dignityOf() is given the chart, so:
- Always favourable: Leo and Capricorn rising (own sign) and Libra rising (exalted).
- Never favourable: Aries rising (debilitated in Cancer), Gemini and Pisces rising (Mercury's signs, Neutral at best).
- Favourable when the 4th lord sits in a temporary-friend position from Mars: Taurus, Virgo and Sagittarius rising (otherwise Neutral) and Cancer, Scorpio and Aquarius rising (otherwise Enemy sign).
dashaQuality() is stricter: good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign; challenging for debilitated, enemy sign or a dusthana; neutral otherwise. The Mars Mahadasha page covers the period.
Timing
Mars has 7 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 27-32 give a strong Mars in an angle a dasha of position, wealth and land; the 4th is an angle, and land is one of Mars's own significations. Sl. 33 gives a weak or debilitated Mars loss of wealth and distress. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time results by decanate, reversed for a retrograde Mars. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.
For Leo and Capricorn rising Mars is also the 4th lord, and BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 4th lord's dasha the acquisition of house and land; this app's line is "gains in property, home comforts and vehicles". Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts Mars from your natal Moon; Mars in the 4th from the Moon is a testing transit there, a different count from this house.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 02:00 IST on 26 October 2010 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Leo-rising case. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Leo 8.67 deg |
| Mars | Scorpio 4.26 deg, 4th house, Own sign; 4th and 9th lord |
| Moon | Taurus 10.63 deg, 10th house, Exalted |
| Jupiter | Pisces 0.30 deg, retrograde, 8th house |
| Saturn | Virgo 16.66 deg, 2nd house |
| Sun (Lagna lord), Mercury, Venus (10th lord) | Libra, 3rd house |
| House line | Favourable: phMars4F |
| dashaQuality for Mars | Good |
| Yoga and dosha | Ruchaka Yoga; Mangal Dosha, Mild |
| Shad Bala (engine, of 20) | 10.25, Medium: position 7.5, aspect 1.5, natural 0.25, motion 0, direction 0, time 1 |
Mars is the 4th lord in its own sign in the 4th, so the favourable line, a "good" dasha grade and Ruchaka follow. Its directional score is zero, as BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 predicts for the nadir. The engine's strength note lists Mars "aspected by Moon, Jupiter, aspected by Saturn": the exalted Moon in Taurus opposite, Jupiter in Pisces by its 9th aspect, Saturn in Virgo by its 3rd. The aspect score nets them to 1.5.
Those benefic aspects change two classical readings. BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 2 is met in full: the 4th's own lord occupies it and benefics aspect it. And BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47's Mars rule is not met, because benefics aspect Mars, while this app's broader check still reports Mangal Dosha (Mild). The Bhrigu Sutras' land-and-conveyances exception (own sign with a benefic) fits on the aspect reading. Mars aspects Aquarius, Taurus and Gemini, the 7th, 10th and 11th, so the Moon in the 10th receives it. The page lists these and does not net them.
Two further readings. Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 15-16, the Scorpio line, applies: attached to trade, skilful in duties, endowed with land. Mars at 4.26 degrees is in the first ten degrees of Scorpio, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 brings its dasha results early in the Mars period; the engine's Vimshottari sequence here opens with the Moon, so Mars's period follows directly after it.
Your own chart
- Confirm Mars is in the fourth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Note its dignity, and remember its directional strength is zero here.
- Find the 4th lord (the lord of Mars's sign) and whether a benefic aspects the 4th (Ch. 15 Sl. 2).
- Check whether any benefic aspects or joins Mars: it decides BPHS Ch. 80's rule and the Bhrigu Sutras' exception.
- Read both houses Mars rules in the Ch. 24 table, and look for Ruchaka in the yogas list.
- For the mother, compare the Moon and Mars, and read the 4th from the Moon (BPHS Ch. 32).
Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.
Readings that go too far
- "Mars in the 4th means no home." Saravali says so; the Bhrigu Sutras reverse it with dignity and a benefic, and the 4th lord decides more.
- "It says something about my mother's health." BPHS reads the mother from the Moon or Mars, the 4th, and the 4th from the Moon together.
- "Mangal Dosha from the 4th is the classical rule." BPHS Ch. 80 does name the 4th, and exempts a Mars a benefic aspects or joins; this app does not apply that exemption.
- "Ruchaka cancels the difficulties." The yoga and the house verses are separate readings; the app shows both.
- "No directional strength means a weak Mars." It is one of six components; dignity and Kendradi Bal can be high at the same time.
- "The 4th from my Moon in transit is my 4th house." Transits are counted from the Moon, natal houses from the Ascendant.
Questions about Mars in the 4th
- Is Mars in the 4th house bad?
- Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 29 is harsh: no relatives, paraphernalia or conveyances. The Bhrigu Sutras give domestic disturbance and no land of one's own, with good personal health, and land, conveyances and a long-lived mother when Mars is in its own sign or exalted with a benefic, or in a friend's sign.
- Why is Mars weak by direction in the 4th?
- BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Sun's and Mars's Dig Bala from the 4th, so it is zero there and full in the 10th.
- Does Mars in the 4th cause Mangal Dosha?
- In this app, yes, graded Mild. BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47 lists the 4th too, but only for a Mars with no benefic aspecting or joining it, and the rule lapses when both partners have it.
- When does Mars in the 4th form Ruchaka Yoga?
- When it is in Scorpio (Leo rising), Aries (Capricorn rising) or Capricorn (Libra rising).
- What does Mars aspect from the 4th?
- The 10th, 7th and 11th houses. The engine counts all three as malefic aspects.
- Which rising sign gives the strongest Mars in the 4th?
- Leo rising (4th and 9th lord in its own sign), Libra rising (exalted, though 2nd and 7th lord) and Capricorn rising (4th lord in Aries). Cancer rising makes Mars the Yoga Karaka, in Libra.
- Is a Mars dasha good with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 27-32 give a strong Mars in an angle position, wealth and land in its dasha, and the 4th is an angle. A weak or debilitated Mars gives loss and distress. This app grades the dasha by dignity and house; Mars in its own sign or exalted here grades "good".
- Does Mars in the 4th say anything about property?
- BPHS judges land from Mars and from the 4th. The verses give no land of one's own in general and land with dignity and a benefic. This app predicts no purchase.
