What the classical texts say about the Sun in the 4th house; why the Sun has no directional strength there; how your rising sign changes the reading; and how this app's engine decides whether the placement reads as favourable.

The Sun in the 4th house is a placement on which two classical books give almost opposite pictures. Saravali gives the Sun in the 4th nothing good: no conveyances, no relatives, the loss of the paternal house. The Bhrigu Sutras give it a difficult start and a marked improvement from the 32nd year. BPHS, in its chapter on the 4th house, attaches the same 32nd year to the Sun in the 4th under a specific condition. Underneath all three sits a mechanical fact the texts agree on: the 4th house is where the Sun has no directional strength at all.

This page sets out those statements with chapter and sloka, the conditions attached to them, and how this app's engine turns the placement into the line in your chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone's home or family. For the planet, read the Sun in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 4th house, Sukha Bhava. This page works out what happens where the two meet.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Body associations are what a text says, not medical advice, and nothing here is a statement about your parents.

The house: what Sukha Bhava stands for

The translation of BPHS used by this site calls the 4th Bandhu Bhava; Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31 gives it a string of names including Bandhava, Griha, Vesma, Sukha, Jala, Patala and Hibuka. BPHS Ch. 15, the chapter on the house, falls into five groups of verses: the dwelling, comforts in general, relatives, the mother, and vehicles. That list is the practical meaning of the house in the texts: home, land, conveyances, relatives and the mother, with comfort or happiness as the thread joining them.

The 4th is also an angle. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 names the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th as the Kendras, glossing the 7th as the descendant and the 10th as the mid-heaven; the 4th is the bottom of that cross, opposite the 10th house. The same passage, and Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 28-31, call the 4th and the 8th the Chaturasras. Unlike the 3rd, the 4th is not an Upachaya, so the principle that malefics do well in the growing houses does not reach it. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 makes the general rule plain: malefics harm the houses they occupy, except the 6th, 8th and 12th.

What the Sun brings into the house

BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 11 lists the Sun among the natural malefics, and this app's engine does the same. Ch. 3 Sl. 14-15 gives the Sun and Moon royal status, and BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 18-21 makes the stronger of the Sun and Venus the indicator of the father, with Sl. 22-24 reading the 9th from the Sun for him. The 4th house is read for the mother, so a Sun in the 4th places the father's planet in the mother's house. None of the three texts draws a conclusion from that, and this page does not either.

Two classical rules point the same way before any Sun-specific verse is read. BPHS Ch. 15 ends its chapter (Sl. 10-14) by tying happiness from conveyances to benefics or malefics connected with the house and its lord. And BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 gives the general test for any house: it does well when joined or aspected by a benefic, or when its lord is strong or placed in the 10th; it is harmed when its lord does not aspect it, sits with a malefic, or joins the lord of the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th. A malefic occupant is the opposite of the first condition. It does not settle the house; the lord still does.

No directional strength: the Sun at the nadir

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives the arithmetic for Dig Bala, directional strength. For the Sun and Mars, subtract the 4th house from the planet's longitude; for Jupiter and Mercury, the 7th; for Venus and the Moon, the 10th; for Saturn, the Lagna. If the result exceeds 180 degrees take it from 360, and divide by three. The house subtracted is each planet's zero point. So the Sun has no directional strength at the nadir and its most at the 10th. This app's Shad Bala calculator uses the same pairing: its directional component peaks for the Sun and Mars in the 10th and for the Moon and Venus in the 4th.

This is one classical mechanism behind the pattern in the planet verses. Saravali (Ch. 30 Sl. 17 and 65) and the Bhrigu Sutras (Moon Sutras 19-24, Venus Sutras 23-28) are kinder to the Moon and Venus in the 4th, the two planets strongest there by direction, and Saravali is hard on the Sun and Mars (Sl. 5 and 29), the two weakest. Saravali's Moon verse is only middling (neither very happy nor miserable), and the Bhrigu Sutras' Moon verse still says the mother will be sickly, so the pattern is a tendency, not a rule. Directional strength is a strength measure, one of six Shad Bala components, not a verdict. A Sun in the 4th can still be exalted, own-sign or well supported, and other components can outweigh this one.

What the texts say about the Sun in the 4th

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 5

Saravali's verse (p. 100): the native "will be devoid of conveyances and relatives, will suffer heart diseases, will destroy paternal house and wealth and will serve a bad king". The heart line is reported only as what the verse says and is not medical advice. Saravali's kindest Sun-in-house verses are for the 3rd, 6th and 10th (Sl. 4, 7, 11); the 4th is not among them, and of the seven planets in Saravali's 4th-house verses, the Sun, Mars (Sl. 29) and Saturn (Sl. 77) are the three given the house's comforts in the negative.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 43-50

The sutras (p. 21): the native "will have defective limbs, he will be proud, will be opposed to the public and will be hot constitutionally". In the 32nd year he gets congenial surroundings and becomes respected, successful, learned, high in position and valorous, but "will not, however, be well off financially". If the 4th lord is strong (exalted or in its own sign) and in an angle or trine, he acquires high-class conveyances; if the 4th lord is with or aspected by a malefic, or in the 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th, he has a low type of conveyance, no land of his own, and lives in other people's houses.

Three features of this reading matter. It is time-dependent: the same text gives a worse first half and a better second. It separates kinds of good: respect and position arrive, wealth is expressly not promised. And the home itself is decided by the 4th lord, not the Sun. The commentary in the same book states the principle outright: "No house can prosper unless its lord is well placed." The commentator adds his own view that the mother suffers with the Sun here unless the Sun is in its own sign or the 4th lord and the Moon are well placed, and notes that the sutras themselves never mention the mother. The limb and constitution lines are the text's, not medical advice.

This app's own reading follows the Bhrigu Sutras rather than Saravali. Its favourable line is "real standing and achievement once the 4th lord is well placed, even if it takes years to arrive", which carries both the lord condition and the delay. Its testing line is "domestic restlessness and a harder relationship with home under real affliction".

BPHS Ch. 15: two verses that name the Sun

BPHS Ch. 15 mentions the Sun in the 4th twice. Sl. 8 is a four-planet pattern: the Sun in the 4th, the Moon and Saturn in the 9th and Mars in the 11th, said to give cows and buffaloes, the working wealth of the period. It is a complete combination, not a reading of the Sun alone, and the other three placements must all hold.

The vehicle verses (Sl. 10-14) include one line for the Sun: with the Sun in the 4th, the 4th lord exalted and joined with Venus, conveyances in the 32nd year. That is the same year the Bhrigu Sutras give for the Sun's turn for the better. The vehicle verses end with a general rule: a benefic in the 4th, aspecting it, or joined to or aspecting its lord gives happiness from vehicles, while a malefic in the same relationships is read as losses and accidents involving vehicles. The Sun in the 4th is a malefic in the 4th, so that last line is the one a literal reading would reach for. It is a classical statement about one factor, and the same chapter makes the 4th lord the deciding one.

This app does not compute any of the Ch. 15 ages. They are single-sloka statements with no stated method behind them.

Your rising sign changes the reading

Houses here are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the 4th house is the fourth sign from your rising sign, and both the Sun's sign and the one house the Sun rules (wherever Leo falls) follow from the Ascendant. The Lagna calculator finds yours. BPHS Ch. 24 gives one sloka for each house lord placed in the 4th, and the Sun in your 4th is always the lord of some house, so one of them always applies.

Sign and lordship are arithmetic from SIGN_LORDS; dignity is dignityOf() with no chart; Ch. 24 rows checked against BPHS (bphs.txt 1764-2068). Harsh clauses are the text's statements, not forecasts.

The pattern runs through every lord in the 4th. The lords of the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th bring home, land, conveyances or the mother's happiness into the house; the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th take them away. The Sun's own readings in Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras describe the planet; Ch. 24 describes the lordship it carries in. They are separate layers of one reading.

Three rows stand out. For Taurus rising the Sun rules and occupies the 4th from its own sign, and BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 2 adds that residential comfort is complete when the 4th is occupied by its own lord and aspected by a benefic, so the benefic aspect is the condition to check. For Leo rising the Sun is the Lagna lord in the 4th, the other occupant Sl. 2 names, with the same benefic condition. For Capricorn rising the Sun is exalted, the best dignity in the table, while the Ch. 24 line for an 8th lord in the 4th is among the hardest. Dignity and lordship are measured separately, and here they disagree as far as they can. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 says a planet gives full, half or a quarter of its results by strength, which is how the texts hold the two together.

Two rising signs where the Sun rules a good house from the 4th

For Aries rising the Sun is the 5th lord in the 4th, and for Sagittarius rising it is the 9th lord. Both are trine lords sitting in an angle. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 makes a Kendra lord related to a trine lord the root of the best-known Raj Yoga; that rule is about two lords combining, and the Sun alone sitting in an angle is not that combination. Whether a full yoga forms depends on where the angle lords are.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading picks the favourable line for a planet's house when its dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 4th is not a dusthana, so for the Sun in the 4th the verdict is decided by dignity alone. Directional strength, the 4th lord and benefic aspects play no part in that one line.

Dignity in a sign the Sun does not own, exalt or fall in is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 between the Sun and that sign's lord. The natural half: the Moon, Mars and Jupiter are friends, Venus and Saturn enemies, Mercury neutral. The temporary half is read from your chart: the lord is a temporary friend if it sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the Sun, otherwise a temporary enemy. Only Friend or Great Friend counts as a Friendly sign. For the Sun in the 4th that sorts the rising signs into four groups.

  • Always favourable: Taurus rising (Sun in Leo, own sign or Moolatrikona) and Capricorn rising (Sun exalted in Aries).
  • Favourable only if the sign lord is in a temporary-friend position from the Sun: Aries, Leo, Virgo and Sagittarius rising, where the Sun is in Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius or Pisces. If the Moon, Mars or Jupiter is in the same sign as the Sun, or in the 5th to 9th sign from it, the result drops to Neutral and the testing line prints.
  • Favourable only if Mercury is in a neighbouring sign: Gemini and Pisces rising (Sun in Virgo or Gemini). Mercury in the Sun's own sign makes it Enemy sign.
  • Never favourable in this engine: Cancer rising (Sun debilitated in Libra), Libra and Scorpio rising (Saturn's signs, which reach Neutral at best), and Aquarius rising (Venus's Taurus).

The dasha panel uses a second test. dashaQuality() calls the Sun challenging if it is debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a dusthana, good only if it is exalted, Moolatrikona or in its own sign, and neutral otherwise. A Sun in a friendly sign in the 4th therefore prints a favourable house line beside a neutral dasha quality. The Sun Mahadasha page sets out both tests.

The Sun's aspect from the 4th

The Sun has only the 7th-sign aspect common to every planet; BPHS Ch. 26 gives special full aspects to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars alone. From the 4th, the Sun's aspect falls on the 10th house, and the engine's aspectedHouses() returns exactly that. The 10th is where the Sun's directional strength peaks, so a Sun in the 4th looks across the axis at the one house in which it would be strongest by direction.

BPHS reads the 4th and 10th as a pair in several places. Ch. 15 Sl. 4 speaks of fine houses when the 10th lord joins the 4th lord in an angle or trine, and Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 counts a lord placed in the 10th as a strength for its house. Neither verse is about the Sun, and none of BPHS, Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras gives a verse for the Sun aspecting the 10th from the 4th. What the engine does with it is mechanical: the Sun is a malefic, so its aspect lowers the Shad Bala of any planet in your 10th. For the house it falls on, see the 10th house.

The 4th lord, the Moon and the mother

Nearly every Bhrigu Sutras result for the 4th depends on the 4th lord, and its commentary says outright that a house cannot prosper unless its lord is well placed. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 37-48 gives the 4th lord in each house. The good positions are the Lagna, its own house, the trines and the 10th; the 6th, 8th and 12th read as comfort withheld. With the Sun in your 4th, the 4th lord is the lord of the Sun's own sign, the same planet whose position decides the engine's dignity verdict. One planet answers both questions.

For the mother, BPHS never reads from a house alone. Ch. 32 makes the stronger of the Moon and Mars her indicator, and Sl. 22-24 read the 4th from the Moon for her. Ch. 15 Sl. 6 needs three things together for a favourable reading: a benefic in the 4th, the 4th lord exalted, and a strong indicator. A Sun in the 4th is not a benefic, so that particular sloka cannot be met with the Sun as the only occupant; the text states no reverse case. The Moon in the 4th house page covers the mother's own significator in this house, and the Moon sign calculator gives the sign to count from.

BPHS also reads fortunes from the Chaturthamsa (D4) and conveyances from the Shodashamsa (D16), per Ch. 7. The Chaturthamsa (D4) calculator and Shodashamsa (D16) calculator compute both. They are second opinions on the house, not on the Sun.

Timing: when the placement comes forward

The Sun's Mahadasha lasts six years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15), and it runs an Antardasha inside every other Mahadasha; the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates. Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 make any dasha lord favourable in the Lagna, exaltation, own or a "Shant" (friendly) sign, and unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitation or an inimical sign. In the Sun's own period, Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11 reads association with the 4th lord as comfort from conveyances. A Sun in the 4th sits in the 4th lord's sign but is joined to it only if that lord is in the same sign.

Ch. 48 gives each house lord's dasha a theme. For Taurus rising, where the Sun rules the 4th, this app words it "gains in property, home comforts and vehicles", and Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 4th lord's dasha the acquisition of house and land. The sub-period chapters list the 4th among the good positions for an Antardasha lord, alongside the other angles, the trines and the 11th. In the Kundali sheet, outside the Sun's periods, the Sun's house line appears under "When Sun's own Dasha or Antardasha is active"; during them it is replaced by the dasha reading.

The 32nd year in the Bhrigu Sutras and in BPHS Ch. 15 is an age, not a dasha. This app does not compute it or mark it, and the texts give no method that would tie it to the dasha sequence.

The Sun passing through the 4th from your Moon

Transits are a different frame: the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon. Its source (Kannan p. 117-118) lists the 4th among the bad transit positions for benefics and malefics alike, and the engine marks it testing for every planet: "steadiness serves better than new commitments here". The Sun takes about thirty days to cross a sign, so this is a month-long window once a year. It is unrelated to a natal Sun in the 4th house, which is counted from the Ascendant.

Why Friendly sign: Jupiter, lord of Pisces and the Sun's natural friend, is in Gemini, the 4th sign from the Sun, a temporary-friend position. The fivefold result is Great Friend and the favourable line prints. Jupiter in Virgo, opposite the Sun, would have made it Neutral and printed the testing line for the same Sun.

What the texts add. With Sagittarius rising the Sun rules Leo, the 9th house, so BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 100 applies: houses, conveyances, happiness and devotion to the mother. The 4th lord, Jupiter, sits in the 7th, an angle; Ch. 24 Sl. 43 reads the 4th lord in the 7th as a high degree of education alongside sacrificing his patrimony and being "akin to the dumb in an assembly", a good result and two losses in one line. The Sun's aspect falls on the 10th, onto the Moon. No benefic occupies the 4th with the Sun. The Ch. 15 Sl. 8 cattle pattern is not met (the Moon is in the 10th, not the 9th), and the 32nd-year vehicle line needs an exalted 4th lord with Venus, which Jupiter in Gemini is not. By the Bhrigu Sutras' principle, the decision rests with Jupiter. Jupiter here is in an angle and free of the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th, but it is not exalted or in its own sign, so Sutras 43-50's high-class-conveyance condition is only half met.

Checking a Sun in the 4th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator. The Sun is in the 4th if it occupies the fourth sign from the Ascendant. In the worked chart below that is a birth just after midnight; an inaccurate birth time can move the Ascendant and the house.
  2. Find the Sun's dignity: exalted in Aries, own in Leo, debilitated in Libra. Otherwise, find the sign lord and count from the Sun to it.
  3. Find the house the Sun rules (where Leo falls) and read that lord's Ch. 24 row in the table above.
  4. Find the 4th lord. It is the lord of the Sun's sign. Is it in the Lagna, its own house, a trine or the 10th, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th?
  5. Look for a benefic joined to or aspecting the 4th or its lord (Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16; Ch. 15 Sl. 2 and 10-14).
  6. Read the mother separately: the Moon, Mars, and the 4th sign from the Moon.
  7. Weigh strength, as Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 asks, with the Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators, remembering that the Sun's directional component is at its lowest in this house.

How positions are computed, and where the limits are, is on the methodology page; the books behind each reading are on the sources page.

Common misreadings

  • "A Sun in the 4th ruins the home." Saravali's verse is harsh, but the Bhrigu Sutras give a later improvement, BPHS Ch. 24 reads the Sun well in the 4th when it rules a good house, and the 4th lord decides more than the occupant.
  • "The Sun in the 4th is weak." It has no directional strength there, which is one of six Shad Bala components. It can be exalted, own-sign or well supported at the same time.
  • "The 32nd year is when things change." Two texts name that age, under different conditions, with no stated method. This app does not compute or mark it.
  • "The Sun in the 4th says something about my mother's health or life." BPHS reads the mother through the Moon, Mars and the 4th from the Moon, and its one favourable sloka needs three conditions together. No single placement decides it.
  • "An angle is always good." The 4th is a Kendra, but a malefic occupying an angle is not a yoga by itself; the Kendra-trine yoga is about lords combining.
  • "Favourable in the app means all is well with the home." The engine's line rests on the Sun's dignity only.
  • "The 4th from my Moon in transit is my 4th house." Transits count from the Moon, natal houses from the Ascendant.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sun in the 4th house good or bad?
The texts disagree. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 5 gives it nothing good; the Bhrigu Sutras give respect, learning and position from the 32nd year, though not wealth. BPHS Ch. 24 reads it well when the Sun rules the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th or 11th, and poorly when it rules the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 4th lord decides more than the Sun.
Why does the Sun have no directional strength in the 4th?
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Sun's Dig Bala from the 4th house: its zero point is the nadir and its maximum the 10th. This app's Shad Bala uses the same pairing.
Why does the app call my Sun in the 4th favourable?
Because its dignity is exalted, own, Moolatrikona or friendly, and the 4th is not a dusthana. The line itself carries the classical condition: standing and achievement once the 4th lord is well placed, possibly late.
What does the 32nd year have to do with the Sun in the 4th?
The Bhrigu Sutras give a favourable turn from the 32nd year, and BPHS Ch. 15 gives conveyances in the 32nd year when the Sun is in the 4th and the 4th lord is exalted with Venus. They are classical statements; this app does not compute them.
Which rising signs give the strongest Sun in the 4th?
By dignity, Capricorn rising (Sun exalted) and Taurus rising (Sun in Leo, also ruling the 4th). By lordship, BPHS Ch. 24 is kindest when the Sun rules a trine or angle; Capricorn rising makes it the 8th lord, the hardest Ch. 24 row.
What does the Sun aspect from the 4th?
Only the 10th house, by its 7th-sign aspect. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for it; the engine counts it as a malefic aspect in Shad Bala.
When will a Sun in the 4th show its effects?
Classically, in the Sun's six-year Mahadasha and its Antardashas, judged by the Ch. 47 dignity test. The Antardasha and Pratyantar guide explains how sub-periods are layered.
Is a Sun transiting the 4th from my Moon the same thing?
No. That transit is counted from the natal Moon, lasts about a month each year, and is marked testing for every planet in this app. The natal placement is counted from the Ascendant.
