Planet in house

What the classical texts say about the Moon in the 4th house: full directional strength at the nadir, Saravali's middling verse and the Bhrigu Sutras' generous one, the mother read three ways, the phase condition, rising-sign lordship, and how this app grades it.

The 4th house is the nadir, the point of the sky under your feet at birth, and BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 makes it the Moon's point of full directional strength. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35 says the same: the Moon and Venus are strong in the 4th, the North. The house is also where BPHS reads the mother, and the Moon is one of her two significators. So a Moon in the 4th is the mother's planet in the mother's house, at the place in the circle where it is strongest by direction.

The verses agree on the general direction and differ on degree. Saravali's Moon in the 4th is "neither very happy nor miserable". The Bhrigu Sutras' is close to the best placement in their book, with one weak point named, the mother's health, and one condition that changes it: a full Moon or a Moon in Cancer. This page sets out both, adds BPHS's three-way reading of the mother, and shows how the engine grades the placement. It is the mirror of the Sun in the 4th, where the Sun has no directional strength at all. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 4th house, Sukha Bhava.

Sources, and the mother

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The texts speak about the mother's health and lifespan; those statements are reported as conditional classical readings, not as anything about your parent, and nothing here is medical advice.

The house at the bottom of the chart

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5 lists six things for Bandhu Bhava: conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, and lands and buildings. Saravali (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31) gives it more names than almost any other house: Bandhava and Griha (relatives, house), Vesma (dwelling), Sukha (happiness), Jala (water), Patala (the nether world) and Hibuka. Jala and Patala seem to name the position of the house, the lowest point below the horizon, rather than a topic. The Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list (p. 14) adds the native place, private affairs, farms, ancestral property, wells, rivers and lakes, milk, and academic education; BPHS puts learning in the 5th, so education here follows the later list.

Water runs through the names and through the Moon. BPHS Ch. 3 gives the Moon a watery abode (Sl. 32) and Water (Varuna) as its deity (Sl. 18); Saravali's Moon-in-the-4th verse makes the native fond of travel by water. The texts do not draw a rule out of the overlap, and this page does not either.

The 4th is a Kendra and, with the 8th, a Chaturasra (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). Being an angle matters because so many rules are written for angles: Kendradi Bal is full there (Ch. 27 Sl. 5), Gaj Kesari as coded here counts Jupiter in an angle from the Moon, and the Kendra-trine lord link is the root of the best-known Raj Yoga.

The verses, side by side

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 17

The verse (p. 101): the native "will be endowed with relatives, paraphernalia and conveyances, be charitable, fond of travelling by water and will neither be very happy nor be miserable". Every item on BPHS's list for the house appears except the mother, and the closing clause holds the verse to the middle.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 19-24

The sutras (p. 36): the native "will be crowned as a king" (a very high status, the translator adds), will own many conveyances, and will prosper in land and money, "but his mother will be sickly". He will have milk in abundance but be nursed by women other than his mother; plentiful food and happiness, but fondness for women other than his wife. If the Moon is strong, full or in its own sign Cancer, "the mother will be long lived"; if weak (waning), "she will be short lived", and the waning Moon also takes away the comfort of conveyances. An exalted 4th lord gives many kinds of conveyance. These are the text's statements, not forecasts. Phase and Cancer are the hinge.

The gap between the two books is plain: Saravali's Moon is "neither very happy nor miserable"; the Bhrigu Sutras' Moon is close to the best placement in the book. Saravali's 4th-house verses show the wider pattern: the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus (Sl. 17, 41, 53, 65) are given the house's good things, the Sun, Mars and Saturn (Sl. 5, 29, 77) are denied them, which is BPHS Ch. 15's closing benefic-and-malefic rule applied one planet at a time.

Full directional strength

The arithmetic of BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7: subtract the 10th house from the Moon's longitude (the Moon and Venus are measured from the 10th), take the result from 360 if it exceeds 180, and divide by three. At the 4th the distance is 180 degrees and the result is the full 60. This app's Shad Bala gives the Moon its full 4 directional points in the 4th house and none in the 10th, falling off evenly in whole houses; the even fall-off is the engine's own. The Shad Bala calculator shows the figure.

Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras are kinder to the Moon and Venus in the 4th, the two planets strongest there by direction, and Saravali is hard on the Sun and Mars, the two weakest. But directional strength is one of six Shad Bala components and a measure, not a verdict. A Moon in the 4th can still be debilitated (Leo rising, Moon in Scorpio), combust near the new Moon, or weak by phase.

The Moon is also strong at night (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 35-38). A Moon in the 4th house is below the horizon, and a birth with the Moon at the nadir is not necessarily a night birth, since that depends on where the Sun is; the engine gives the Moon full time strength for a night birth and half otherwise.

The mother, read three ways

BPHS never reads a relative from a house alone. Ch. 32 Sl. 18-21 make the stronger of the Moon and Mars the indicator of the mother, and Sl. 22-24 read the 4th counted from the Moon for her, as the 9th from the Sun is read for the father. So there are three places to look: the 4th house and its lord, the Moon (or Mars), and the 4th sign from the Moon.

With the Moon in the 4th, those three separate in a fixed way. The first two meet, because the indicator sits in the house. The third moves: the 4th from a Moon in the 4th is your 7th house. So BPHS's mother reading for this placement looks at the 4th house (with the Moon in it), its lord, and whatever occupies your 7th. The Moon sign calculator gives the sign to count from.

Ch. 15 Sl. 6 needs three things together for a long-lived mother: a benefic in the 4th, the 4th lord exalted, and a strong significator of the mother. A strong, waxing Moon in the 4th can supply two of the three by itself, the benefic in the house and the strong significator. The 4th lord, which is the lord of the Moon's sign, supplies the third only if it is exalted. Sl. 7 adds the mother's happiness when the 4th lord is in an angle, Venus also in an angle and Mercury exalted. Neither sloka states the reverse case, and reading the absence of these conditions as a statement about a parent's life is not in the text.

BPHS Ch. 15 and a benefic in the 4th

  • Sl. 2: residential comfort is complete when the 4th is occupied by its own lord, or by the Lagna lord, and aspected by a benefic. The Moon is its own 4th lord only for Aries rising, sitting in Cancer; it is the Lagna lord in the 4th for Cancer rising, sitting in Libra. Both meet the occupant half; the benefic aspect is the other half.
  • Sl. 4: the 10th lord with the 4th lord in an angle or trine gives fine houses. A Moon in the 4th aspects the 10th, the other end of the axis, but aspect is not the conjunction the verse asks for.
  • Sl. 10-14: the vehicle verses end with a general rule. A benefic in the 4th, aspecting it, or joined to or aspecting its lord gives happiness from vehicles, free of accident; a malefic in the same relationships, losses and accidents. A waxing Moon in the 4th is the benefic case; a waning Moon, which BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts as a malefic, would be the other.

The Bhrigu Sutras' phase condition and Ch. 15's benefic rule therefore point the same way. Both make the waxing or full Moon the good case and the waning Moon the difficult one. The texts measure it: medium strength from 0 to 120 degrees ahead of the Sun, exceedingly strong from 120 to 240, very little from 240 to 360 (a translator's note to BPHS Ch. 3 and Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17), with a waning Moon joined or aspected by a benefic turning benefic. The full Moon at 180 degrees is the middle of the strongest band.

The Moon phase calculator gives the elongation for your birth moment. This app does not use it for the house line: the engine counts the Moon a benefic whatever its phase.

Rising signs: dignity and lordship

Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Moon is in your 4th when it occupies the fourth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules Cancer, so it rules one house in every chart, and BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 4th.

Dignity is dignityOf() with no chart (natural relation only); lordship from SIGN_LORDS; Ch. 24 rows checked against BPHS (bphs.txt 1764-2068); harsh clauses are the text's statements, not forecasts.

Read down the column: the lords of the 9th and 10th bring home, land and the mother's happiness; the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th remove them; the 6th lord is mixed. Two rows set the Moon's own verses against its lordship. For Aquarius rising the Moon is exalted in the 4th, the best dignity, and Sl. 64 withholds the mother's happiness. For Sagittarius rising, Sl. 88 is among the hardest rows, while BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the Moon's 8th lordship is not evil.

Aries rising: everything in one place

For Aries rising the Moon is the 4th lord in its own sign in the 4th, at full directional strength, in Cancer, which is the Bhrigu Sutras' exemption from the mother clause. Ch. 15 Sl. 2 is half met (its own lord occupies the house). Ch. 24 Sl. 40 is the "minister with wealth of all kinds" row. And the Bhrigu Sutras' commentary principle, that a house cannot prosper unless its lord is well placed, is met by the lord being the occupant. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22 do not name the Moon's role for Aries rising, and Sl. 8-10 rank the Moon least affected of the four benefics by owning an angle. This app's Kendradhipathya check covers Jupiter and Venus only, so the Moon owning the 4th is never flagged.

The 4th lord, through the houses

Because the 4th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign, BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 37-48, the verses for the 4th lord in each house, are the second table to read.

4th lord inBPHS Ch. 24What the sloka says
1stSl. 37Learning, good qualities, ornaments, lands, conveyances, happiness from the mother
2ndSl. 38Pleasures, wealth of all kinds, family life, honour; adventurous, cunning
3rdSl. 39Valour, servants, liberal, virtuous, charitable, self-earned wealth, free from diseases
4thSl. 40A minister with wealth of all kinds: skilful, honourable, learned, happy
5thSl. 41Happy and liked by all, devout, honourable, self-earned wealth
6thSl. 42Devoid of maternal happiness, given to anger, a thief and a conjurer, independent, indisposed
7thSl. 43A high degree of education, sacrifices patrimony, "akin to the dumb in an assembly"
8thSl. 44Devoid of domestic comforts, little parental happiness, "equal to a neuter"
9thSl. 45Dear to everyone, devout, honourable, every kind of happiness
10thSl. 46Royal honours, an alchemist, great contentment, pleasures, mastery of the five senses
11thSl. 47Liberal, charitable, helpful; with a fear of hidden illness
12thSl. 48Devoid of domestic and other comforts; vices; foolish and indolent
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 37-48 (bphs.txt 1818-1844), every clause kept. Health phrases are the text's, not medical advice.

The general pattern: Lagna, own house, trines and the 10th read well; the Dusthanas withhold comfort; Sl. 43 pairs high education with the loss of patrimony. BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 add that any house does well when its lord sits in the 10th, which for the 4th lord means opposite its own house and aspecting it. Two named patterns also use the 4th: Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11 form Yav Yog with all benefics in the 4th and 10th, or all malefics in the 1st and 7th, and Ch. 31 reads an unobstructed Argala aspecting the 4th as residences, quadrupeds and relatives.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Moon's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 4th is an angle, so dignity alone decides. The phase, directional strength and the 4th lord are not part of that one line.

Outside Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio, the Moon's dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 with the sign's lord: the Sun and Mercury are natural friends, every other lord neutral, and the temporary half comes from the chart (the lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Moon is a temporary friend). In the code read for this page dignityOf() is given the chart, so:

  • Always favourable: Aries rising (Moon in Cancer) and Aquarius rising (Moon exalted in Taurus).
  • Never favourable: Leo rising (Moon debilitated in Scorpio).
  • For the other nine: favourable when the 4th lord (the lord of the Moon's sign) is in a temporary-friend position from the Moon; otherwise Neutral (Taurus, Gemini and Pisces rising) or Enemy sign (the other six), and the testing line prints.

So the engine, too, ends up asking about the 4th lord, by a different route from the Bhrigu Sutras' commentary. dashaQuality() is stricter: good only for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign, challenging for debilitated, enemy sign or a dusthana, neutral otherwise. The Moon Mahadasha page sets that out.

Yogas, the aspect on the 10th, and the divisions

With the Moon in the 4th, the 2nd and 12th from the Moon are your 5th and 3rd houses, so Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura (BPHS Ch. 37) look there; Adhi Yoga looks at benefics in your 9th, 10th and 11th; Gaj Kesari, as coded here, at Jupiter in any angle, since angles from a Moon in an angle are the angles of the chart, with a benefic joining or aspecting it and Jupiter not debilitated, combust or in an enemy sign. Kahal Yog (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10) uses the 4th lord and Jupiter in mutual angles with a strong Lagna lord. The yogas calculator reports the ones this app detects.

From the 4th the Moon aspects the 10th; aspectedHouses('moon', 4) returns [10]. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect and raises the Shad Bala of any planet in your 10th. BPHS pairs the 4th and 10th constantly (Ch. 15 Sl. 4; Ch. 39 Sl. 35-37), but none of the three texts gives a verse for the Moon's aspect itself. See the 10th house.

BPHS Ch. 7 assigns fortunes to the Chaturthamsa and conveyances to the Shodashamsa. The Chaturthamsa (D4) calculator and Shodashamsa (D16) calculator compute both; they are second opinions on the house, not on the Moon.

Timing

The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years; inside it each Antardasha lasts as many months as its lord has Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 16-22 describe a good Moon dasha when the Moon is exalted or in its own sign, in a kendra, joined or aspected by benefics, fully strong, and linked with the lord of the 10th, 9th or 4th: prosperity, auspicious events at home, conveyances. A Moon in the 4th meets the kendra condition by position. Sl. 23-26 give the other side, beginning with a waning or debilitated Moon. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.

For Aries rising the Moon is the 4th lord, and BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 4th lord's dasha the acquisition of house and land; this app's line is "gains in property, home comforts and vehicles". Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, so the transit "4th from your Moon" is your 7th house here, and Saturn crossing it is Ardha Ashtama Sani.

The Moon is in its own sign, so the favourable line and a "good" dasha grade follow without any friendship check. It is 191 degrees ahead of the Sun, just past full and inside Saravali's strongest band, and it is in Cancer, so both of the Bhrigu Sutras' exemptions from the mother clause apply. It has full directional strength in the 4th.

The other layers. Ch. 24 Sl. 40 applies. Ch. 15 Sl. 2 has its occupant (the 4th lord) but needs a benefic aspect on the 4th: Jupiter in Virgo aspects the 10th, 12th and 2nd, Venus in Aquarius the 5th, so on this whole-sign count no benefic aspects Cancer. Mars, the other indicator of the mother, is retrograde in the 3rd. The 4th from the Moon is Libra, your 7th, which is empty. Mars in the 12th from the Moon forms Anapha; Venus in the 8th from the Moon forms Chandradhi. The Moon's aspect falls on Saturn in its own sign in the 10th. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm the Moon is in the fourth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Find the phase. Full or near full is the Bhrigu Sutras' good case; Cancer is their other exemption.
  3. Find the 4th lord (the lord of the Moon's sign): its house and dignity decide Ch. 15 and the engine's verdict.
  4. Look for a benefic aspecting the 4th (Ch. 15 Sl. 2) and malefics connected with it (Sl. 14).
  5. For the mother, compare the Moon and Mars, and read your 7th house, the 4th from the Moon.
  6. Read the house the Moon rules from the Ch. 24 table.

Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.

Readings that go too far

  • "The Moon in the 4th guarantees a happy home." Saravali says neither very happy nor miserable; the Bhrigu Sutras attach a phase condition; BPHS reads the house through its lord.
  • "It says something about my mother's health." BPHS reads the mother from the Moon or Mars, the 4th, and the 4th from the Moon, and its one favourable sloka needs three conditions together.
  • "Full directional strength means the Moon is strong." It is one Shad Bala component; dignity, phase and combustion still count.
  • "A waning Moon in the 4th is ruinous." The Bhrigu Sutras name conveyances and the mother's lifespan as what a waning Moon weakens, as the text's statements; the translator's note lets a benefic's company or aspect restore it.
  • "The 4th house is education." That is the later list; BPHS puts learning in the 5th.

Questions about the Moon in the 4th

Is the Moon in the 4th house good?
The texts lean favourable. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 17 gives relatives, goods and conveyances but calls the native neither very happy nor miserable; the Bhrigu Sutras give high status, conveyances and land, with the mother's health as the weak point unless the Moon is full or in Cancer.
Why is the Moon strong in the 4th?
By direction. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Moon's Dig Bala from the 10th, so it is full at the 4th; Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35 agrees. This app gives the Moon its full directional points there.
What does it say about the mother?
BPHS reads her from the stronger of the Moon and Mars, the 4th house, and the 4th from the Moon. With the Moon in the 4th, that last is your 7th house. Ch. 15 Sl. 6's favourable reading needs three conditions together.
Does the phase matter?
The Bhrigu Sutras make it the hinge: full or in Cancer, a long-lived mother and conveyances; waning, the reverse, as the text's statement. This app counts the Moon a benefic whatever its phase.
What does the Moon aspect from the 4th?
The 10th house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; none of the three texts gives a separate verse for it.
Which rising sign gives the strongest Moon in the 4th?
Aries rising, where the Moon is the 4th lord in its own sign. Aquarius rising gives an exalted Moon, but Ch. 24 Sl. 64 reads its 6th lordship as withholding the mother's happiness.
Does the Moon in the 4th say anything about vehicles or property?
Saravali gives conveyances and household goods; the Bhrigu Sutras give many conveyances and land, the conveyances taken away by a waning Moon; BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 14 reads a benefic in the 4th as happiness from vehicles, free of accident. This app predicts no purchase and computes none of Ch. 15's vehicle ages.
Is the Moon's dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 counts a Moon in a kendra, linked with the 4th, 9th or 10th lord, among the conditions for a prosperous Moon dasha. This app grades the dasha by dignity and house only.
