BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 gives each planet one governance, and the Moon's is the mind. Ch. 11 Sl. 6 gives the 5th house seven things, three of which are about the mind: sacred spells, learning and knowledge. Saravali names the house Pratibha and calls it "the only House connected with Dhi", intellect. A Moon in the 5th is the mind's planet in the mind's house, and the verses on it are among the warmest for the 5th: learning, scholarship, devotion, children and friends.
They are not unconditional. Saravali also calls the native timid; BPHS and Saravali count a waning Moon a malefic, which reverses the benefic test both books apply to this house; and BPHS has a separate rule, the Lajjit state, for planets in the 5th beside the hard planets. This page sets those out, with the one wealth yoga in BPHS that needs the Moon here, and the app's reading. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 5th house, Putra Bhava.
Sources, and children
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Verses about parentage are left out, and no age or number of children is computed or suggested; where a Moon verse itself names sons or daughters, it is reported as the text's statement. Nothing here says whether you will or will not have children.
The house of the mind and of children
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 lists amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty or authority, and fall of position. Only one of the seven is children, three are about the mind, and two about standing, including its loss. The 5th is a trine and a Panaphara (Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36); Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the lord of a trine gives auspicious results, and that the 5th and 9th are "specially for wealth". Jupiter is its fixed significator (Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34).
BPHS Ch. 16, the house's own chapter, is almost entirely about children, and it reads as a method: first the 5th lord's house, then its condition, then the planets in the 5th, then Jupiter. A Moon in the 5th enters that method at the third step, and, because the Moon's sign lord is the 5th lord, at the first two as well.
The Moon verses
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 18
The verse (p. 101): the native "will be timid in disposition, will earn learning, clothes and food, will have many sons and friends, be a scholar and be passionate". Learning and scholarship land on the house's mind items, many sons on its children item, and friends on neither. The costs are temperament: timid, and passionate.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 25-32
The sutras (p. 37): the native succeeds in pleasing the deities by devoted worship and worships female deities; he has cattle and abundant milk, is of "satwik" nature and a hard worker, but worried. They also speak of his wife: good looking but quick-tempered, with a birthmark the text describes, and of two wives; and of children: "a number of daughters and only one son". With benefics he does good to others, not with malefics. A full Moon makes him feed others, powerful, learned, pious, fortunate and a "Rajyogi", worldly yet detached. The commentator (p. 37) cannot see how the 5th governs the wife or her body, and ties the daughters to the Moon being a female planet. These are the text's statements, not forecasts.
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 22 counts the luminaries and Jupiter as the sattvic planets, so the sutras' "satwik" puts the planet's own guna into the house of sacred spells.
| Source | Mind and devotion | Children and friends | Cost or condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 18 | Earns learning, a scholar | Many sons and friends | Timid; passionate |
| Bhrigu Sutras 25-32 | Devoted in worship, sattvik; a Rajyogi with a full Moon | Many daughters and one son; two wives | A hard worker but worried; does good to others with benefics |
| Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 | - | A benefic in the 5th: "will surely beget children" | Counted from the stronger of Lagna and Moon |
| This app, phMoon5F | A generous, spiritually inclined nature; devotion | Fortune through children | Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly dignity |
| This app, phMoon5U | - | Restlessness around children or creative work | Any other dignity; "calls for more discipline" |
Saravali's 5th-house verses (Ch. 30 Sl. 6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66, 78) read the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus well, against the Sun, Mars and Saturn, which read badly for children while the Sun keeps the intelligence. The Moon is the only benefic whose favourable status depends on its phase.
Saravali's test, and the phase
Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 (p. 127) gives the simplest rule in any of the texts: if the 5th holds a benefic, or is aspected by one, or is a benefic's sign, the native "will surely beget children"; otherwise not. It adds that the 5th should be counted from the Moon or the Ascendant, the stronger prevailing. Sl. 37 gives the reverse: a malefic's sign in the 5th, occupied by strong malefics, with no benefic aspect.
A waxing Moon in the 5th meets the first clause by occupation. A waning Moon is the case BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 and Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 9 count as a malefic, and then the occupant clause fails, though the sign clause may still hold. The texts measure "waning" by the Moon's distance ahead of the Sun, medium to 120 degrees, exceedingly strong from 120 to 240, very little from 240 to 360, with a waning Moon joined or aspected by a benefic turning benefic.
Saravali's "count from the Moon" clause has a fixed consequence for this placement: the 5th from a Moon in the 5th is your 9th house. So Saravali's second count of the house of children falls on the house of fortune. The Moon phase calculator gives the elongation; this app counts the Moon a benefic whatever its phase.
The Lajjit state, and the daughter verse
BPHS Ch. 45, on planetary states, defines the Lajjit or "ashamed" state by the 5th house: a planet in Putra Bhava associated with Rahu or Ketu, or with the Sun, Saturn or Mars, is Lajjit (Sl. 11-18), and Sl. 19-23 say that a Lajjit planet in the 5th means "destruction of progeny, or there will be only one surviving child", a statement of the text, not a forecast. A Moon in the 5th beside any of those five is in that state. The chapter gives no method for weighing it against the Moon's own good verses, and this app does not compute Avasthas, so it is a check to do by hand.
BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 13 names the Moon directly: daughters, "so say Jyotishis", if the 5th lord is with the Moon or in her decanate. Parashara attributes the verse to others. With the Moon in your 5th, the 5th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign, so it is "with the Moon" when it shares the 5th; for Pisces rising the Moon is itself the 5th lord, a case the verse does not address. The Bhrigu Sutras' "a number of daughters" points the same way. The verse is a classical classification, reported here as such.
BPHS Ch. 16's method, from the 5th lord
- Sl. 1-3: the Lagna lord and 5th lord in their own signs, angles or trines promise "thorough happiness" through children; the 5th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or combust, or weak with malefics, the reverse.
- Sl. 8: such a 5th lord gives issues "with difficulty", which softens Sl. 1-3 considerably; it also lists the 5th lord "in Putr itself" among the difficult cases, which Sl. 16 contradicts.
- Sl. 12: many children if a strong 5th lord and the 5th receive the aspect of strong Mercury, Jupiter and Venus.
- Sl. 16: children are obtained if the 5th lord is exalted, or in the 2nd, 5th or 9th, or joined or aspected by Jupiter.
Ch. 24 Sl. 53 offers a way between Sl. 8 and Sl. 16 with a condition: the 5th lord at home gives progeny when related to a benefic and denies it when related to a malefic, the person being "virtuous and dear to friends" either way. Jupiter, the karaka, has its own page: Jupiter in the 5th house.
The 5th lord, through the houses
Since the 5th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign, BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 49-60, the verses for the 5th lord in each house, are the table that carries most of the classical weight for this placement. They are character sketches in the idiom of a royal court, with "king" and "minister" meaning rank and responsibility.
| 5th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | What the verse says |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 49 | Scholarly, happy through children; also miserly, crooked, and steals others' wealth |
| 2nd | Sl. 50 | Many sons and wealth, head of a family, honourable, attached to his spouse, famous |
| 3rd | Sl. 51 | Attached to co-born, a tale bearer and a miser, absorbed in his own work |
| 4th | Sl. 52 | Happy, with maternal happiness, wealth and intelligence; a king, minister or preceptor |
| 5th | Sl. 53 | Progeny if related to a benefic, none if to a malefic; virtuous and dear to friends either way |
| 6th | Sl. 54 | Sons equal to his enemies, or loss of them, or an adopted or purchased son |
| 7th | Sl. 55 | Honourable, very religious, happy through children, helpful to others |
| 8th | Sl. 56 | Not much happiness from children; cough and pulmonary disorders; given to anger, devoid of happiness |
| 9th | Sl. 57 | A prince or equal to one, an author of treatises, famous |
| 10th | Sl. 58 | Enjoys a Raj Yog and various pleasures, very famous |
| 11th | Sl. 59 | Learned, dear to people, an author, very skilful, with many sons and wealth |
| 12th | Sl. 60 | Without happiness from his own sons; an adopted or purchased son |
Sl. 58, the 5th lord in the 10th, is the only one the chapter calls a Raj Yog outright, and Sl. 54, 56 and 60 are the hard ones. For a Moon in the 5th the table answers the question the Moon's own verses leave open: where the lord of its sign has gone. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 27 adds that a malefic's Navamsa on the 5th with a malefic's aspect gives progeny "with difficulty", and BPHS Ch. 31 reads an unobstructed Argala on the 5th as "sons, grand sons and intelligence", which the Argala calculator checks.
Rising signs: dignity and lordship
Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Moon is in your 5th when it occupies the fifth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules Cancer only, so it rules one house in every chart, and BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 5th.
| Ascendant | Moon's sign | Natural dignity | Moon rules | BPHS Ch. 24, that lord in the 5th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Leo | Friendly (Sun) | 4th | Sl. 41: happy and liked by all, virtuous, honourable, self-earned wealth |
| Taurus | Virgo | Friendly (Mercury) | 3rd | Sl. 29: has sons and is virtuous; a formidable spouse if a malefic joins or aspects |
| Gemini | Libra | Neutral (Venus) | 2nd | Sl. 17: wealthy; the person and the children intent on earning |
| Cancer | Scorpio | Debilitated | 1st | Sl. 5: mediocre happiness from children, will lose his first child; honourable, given to anger, dear to the king |
| Leo | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 12th | Sl. 137: bereft of sons and learning; spends, and visits shrines, in order to beget a son |
| Virgo | Capricorn | Neutral (Saturn) | 11th | Sl. 125: happy, educated, virtuous and religious |
| Libra | Aquarius | Neutral (Saturn) | 10th | Sl. 113: all kinds of learning, always delighted, wealthy, with sons |
| Scorpio | Pisces | Neutral (Jupiter) | 9th | Sl. 101: sons and prosperity, devoted to elders, bold, charitable, learned |
| Sagittarius | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 8th | Sl. 89: dull-witted, a limited number of children; long-lived and wealthy |
| Capricorn | Taurus | Exalted | 7th | Sl. 77: honourable, endowed with all virtues, always delighted, wealthy |
| Aquarius | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 6th | Sl. 65: fluctuating finances, enmity with sons and friends; happy, selfish and kind |
| Pisces | Cancer | Own | 5th | Sl. 53: progeny if related to a benefic, none if related to a malefic; virtuous either way |
Two rows put the Moon's verses and its lordship side by side. Cancer rising: the Moon is the Lagna lord, debilitated in Scorpio in the 5th; Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 counts the Lagna lord in a trine in its favour and debilitation against it, and Ch. 24 Sl. 5 gives mediocre happiness from children. Capricorn rising: the Moon is exalted in Taurus as 7th lord, Sl. 77 is warm, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 call the Moon a malefic for Capricorn rising.
Pisces rising, and a Great Affluence yoga
For Pisces rising the Moon is the 5th lord in Cancer, its own sign, in the 5th. Ch. 34 calls it auspicious for that Ascendant, and as a trine lord in its own trine it meets Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3's own-sign condition and Sl. 16's "in the 5th". Ch. 24 Sl. 53 then turns the children reading on its benefic or malefic relations.
BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 2-8 list seven Great Affluence yogas, each a planet in its own sign in the 5th with named planets in the 11th. Sl. 8 is the Moon's: the Moon in Cancer in the 5th with Saturn in the 11th, which exists only for Pisces rising. This app's yoga engine checks all seven as written; they are rare by construction. Ch. 41 Sl. 16-17 state the broader rule: the 9th and 5th lords can bestow wealth in their dashas, judged after weighing strength. The yogas calculator reports any that form, and what a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh one.
The Raj Yoga verses use the same lord. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 3-5 judge Raj Yogas from the Ascendant lord with the 5th lord; Sl. 33-34 from the 5th and 9th lords together; Sl. 37-38 from the 5th lord in the 1st, 4th or 10th with the 9th or Ascendant lord. The Moon is a candidate only where it is the 5th lord (Pisces rising) or the Ascendant lord (Cancer rising).
Standing, and three more BPHS rules
Outside its own chapter BPHS uses the 5th mostly for rank and money, the "royalty or authority" of Ch. 11 Sl. 6 put to work. Three further rules touch a Moon in the 5th through that route.
- BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 7 reads the 5th and 9th lords in the 6th and 12th, aspected by Maraka planets, as penury: the opposite of the Ch. 41 wealth rule. For a Moon in the 5th the 5th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign, so that rule asks where that lord has gone.
- BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 18-19, in the sign-based dashas, call a sign's period favourable when benefics occupy Putr and Dharm. This belongs to the sign dashas, not to Vimshottari.
- BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 2-4 give wealth and happiness for a day birth when the Moon is in its own or a friendly navamsa and receives Jupiter's aspect, and for a night birth when Venus aspects it instead. With the Moon in the 5th, Jupiter aspects it from the 11th by its 7th aspect, from the 9th by its 9th, and from the 1st by its 5th.
None of these is computed by the planet-in-house line, and only the Ch. 41 affluence yogas are among the combinations the engine checks. They are the reasons to treat the 5th as more than the house of children.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Moon's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 5th is a trine, so dignity alone decides. The app adds no aspects or conjunctions to this verdict.
Outside Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio the Moon's dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 with the sign's lord: the Sun and Mercury are natural friends, every other lord neutral, and the temporary half comes from the chart (the lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Moon is a temporary friend). In the code read for this page dignityOf() is given the chart, so:
- Always favourable: Capricorn rising (Moon exalted) and Pisces rising (Moon in Cancer).
- Never favourable: Cancer rising (Moon debilitated).
- For the other nine: favourable when the 5th lord, the lord of the Moon's sign, is in a temporary-friend position from the Moon; otherwise Neutral (Aries, Taurus, Aquarius rising) or Enemy sign (the other six).
dashaQuality() is stricter: good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign, challenging for debilitated, enemy sign or a dusthana, neutral otherwise. The Moon Mahadasha page sets that out.
Strength, aspect and lunar yogas
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives the Moon full directional strength in the 4th and none in the 10th. The 5th is one house past the peak, about five-sixths of the maximum in this engine's even steps. As a Panaphara it receives half of Kendradi Bal. The Shad Bala calculator shows both.
From the 5th the Moon aspects the 11th; aspectedHouses('moon', 5) returns [11]. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect. The 5th and 11th are the pair Ch. 41 builds its affluence yogas on, and in Sl. 8 the Moon looks straight at the Saturn it needs. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for the aspect. See the 11th house.
For the lunar yogas, the 2nd and 12th from a Moon in the 5th are your 6th and 4th houses, so Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura look there; Adhi Yoga at benefics in your 10th, 11th and 12th; Gaj Kesari, as coded here, at Jupiter in your 2nd, 5th, 8th or 11th, or in an angle of the chart, with a benefic joining or aspecting it. BPHS Ch. 7 assigns "sons and grandsons" to the Saptamsa, the D7, as a second look at the 5th's first subject.
Timing
The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 16-22 list a Moon in the 11th, 9th or 5th among the conditions of a prosperous Moon dasha, with children among the results, alongside exaltation, own sign, benefic company and full strength. Sl. 23-26 give the other side, beginning with a waning or debilitated Moon. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.
For Pisces rising the Moon is also the 5th lord, and BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give that dasha "progress in educational sphere and happiness from the children"; this app shows "progress in education and happiness through children". BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 18-32 give ages and numbers of children for particular combinations, which this app does not compute. Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 11:45 IST on 7 January 1996 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Pisces-rising case. At 11:00 the Ascendant was only 0.19 degrees into Pisces, so a later time was used to keep the example off a sign boundary, which is itself a reminder of how much the house depends on birth time. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Pisces 16.26 deg |
| Moon | Cancer 7.55 deg (Pushya), 5th house, Own sign; also the 5th lord |
| Jupiter (Lagna lord, karaka) | Sagittarius 7.10 deg, 10th house, Moolatrikona |
| Mars, Mercury, Venus | Capricorn, 11th house |
| Saturn | Aquarius 25.94 deg, 12th house |
| Sun | Sagittarius 22.42 deg, 10th house |
| Moon ahead of the Sun | 195.13 deg |
| House line | Favourable: phMoon5F |
| dashaQuality for the Moon | Good |
| Yogas reported (selection) | Hamsa (Jupiter); Raj Yoga, Kendra-Kona (Mercury, Moon, Mars) |
The Moon is in its own sign, so the favourable line and the "good" dasha grade follow. It is 195 degrees ahead of the Sun, in Saravali's strongest band, so it is a full benefic for Saravali's test, which it meets by occupation. No other planet shares the 5th, so no Lajjit question arises. The Lagna lord, Jupiter, is in an angle in its Moolatrikona and the 5th lord in its own sign in a trine, which is Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3's favourable condition.
What the chart does not meet. Ch. 41 Sl. 8 needs Saturn in the 11th; Saturn is in Aquarius, the 12th, while the 11th holds Mars, Mercury and Venus, so the engine reports no Great Affluence yoga. The Moon's aspect falls on those three planets in Capricorn. Counted from the Moon, as Saravali allows, the 5th is Scorpio, your 9th, which is empty. The page lists these and does not net them.
Two counts the engine does not make can be read off the same figures. BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 and Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 30 grade the Moon by its house from the Sun: here the Sun is in Sagittarius and the Moon in Cancer, the 8th from the Sun, a panaphara, which those verses read as a middling amount of wealth, learning and skill. And the Moon at 7.55 degrees is in the first ten degrees of Cancer, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 would bring its dasha results at the start of the period. In this chart the engine's Vimshottari sequence begins with Saturn, so the Moon's own period comes late in the cycle.
Your own chart
- Confirm the Moon is in the fifth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Find the phase: a waxing or strong Moon is the benefic of Saravali's test.
- List any other planet in the 5th and note the Lajjit state if the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu is there.
- Find the 5th lord (the lord of the Moon's sign) and the Lagna lord, and apply BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3, 8 and 16.
- Check Jupiter, the karaka: does it join or aspect the 5th lord?
- For a second look at children, BPHS Ch. 7 assigns them to the Saptamsa; the Saptamsa (D7) calculator computes it.
Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.
Readings to be careful with
- "The Moon in the 5th means many children." Saravali says so, conditionally on the Moon being a benefic in the sense of its own test; BPHS judges children mainly by the 5th lord and Jupiter.
- "The Moon in the 5th means daughters." Ch. 16 Sl. 13 is attributed to others and depends on the 5th lord; the Bhrigu Sutras' "a number of daughters and only one son" is a single sutra, which its commentator explains by the Moon being female. None of it is a forecast.
- "Timid means weak-willed." It is one word in one verse, beside learning and scholarship.
- "Favourable in the app means children are assured." The line rests on dignity only.
- "The 5th from my Moon in transit is my 5th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.
Questions about the Moon in the 5th
- Is the Moon in the 5th house good?
- Both Moon verses lean favourable: Saravali gives learning, many sons and friends, and calls the native timid and passionate; the Bhrigu Sutras give devotion and a sattvik nature, with daughters and one son. Saravali's benefic test counts a waxing Moon in the 5th in its favour.
- Does the phase matter?
- In the texts, yes: a waning Moon is counted a malefic, which changes Saravali's test and BPHS's benefic rules. This app counts the Moon a benefic whatever its phase.
- What is the Lajjit state?
- BPHS Ch. 45 calls a planet in the 5th "ashamed" when associated with Rahu, Ketu, the Sun, Saturn or Mars, and reads it as destruction of progeny or one surviving child, as the text's statement. This app does not compute it.
- Which rising sign gives the strongest Moon in the 5th?
- Pisces rising (Moon as 5th lord in Cancer) and Capricorn rising (Moon exalted). Pisces rising is also the only Ascendant for the Ch. 41 Sl. 8 Great Affluence yoga, which needs Saturn in the 11th.
- What does the Moon aspect from the 5th?
- The 11th house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; none of the three texts gives a separate verse for it.
- When would it show?
- Classically in the Moon's ten-year Mahadasha; BPHS Ch. 47 lists a Moon in the 5th among the conditions for a prosperous Moon dasha.
- Is a Moon transiting the 5th from my Moon the same?
- No. Transits are counted from the natal Moon; the transiting Moon spends about two and a quarter days in a sign. The natal placement is counted from the Ascendant.
