Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Jupiter in the 5th house: Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras on intelligence and children, the karaka maxim the sutras do not apply, BPHS Ch. 16's Jupiter verses, Kalanidhi and the Great Affluence yogas, Jupiter's aspect on the Lagna and the 9th, Jupiter as a lord in the 5th for every rising sign, and how this app grades it.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

Jupiter in the 5th house puts the fixed significator of children into the house of children, and the readings are among the warmest in the texts. Saravali gives abundant happiness, many sons and friends, learning, courage and wealth; the Bhrigu Sutras give a highly intelligent native, a good conversationalist, with a good number of prosperous children, and take that away if the 5th lord is in a malefic's or enemy's sign or debilitated, or if Rahu or Ketu joins Jupiter without a benefic aspect. BPHS names the 5th among the three houses that make Jupiter's own dasha favourable.

The question raised against it is the karaka maxim, that a significator harms the house it signifies. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator sees it behind Phaldeepika's "want of children" here, and commends the sutras and Saravali instead. This page sets out the verses, the maxim, the yogas that run through the 5th, what Jupiter owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 5th house, Putra Bhava.

Sources, and children

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. BPHS Ch. 16 gives ages and numbers of children for Jupiter combinations; this page names them without reproducing them, and this app computes none. Nothing here is a prediction about anyone's family.

The karaka of the 5th in the 5th

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 gives Putr Bhava amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty or authority, and fall of position. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Jupiter the fixed significator of the 5th, which is why several 5th-house rules in Ch. 16 (Sl. 12, 16, 18, 19) check Jupiter as well as the house lord. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 also read children from the 5th house counted from Jupiter; for a Jupiter in the 5th that is the 9th house.

The 5th is a trine (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36), and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 make trine lords auspicious and the 5th and 9th "specially for wealth". Jupiter in Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 confers knowledge and happiness; Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31 call the 5th the only house connected with Dhi, intellect. Knowledge is on both lists, and children are on both.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 54

The verse in full: the native will have abundant happiness, many sons and friends, be learned, courageous, wealthy and will always be happy. No condition is stated.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 24-31

The sutras (p. 78): highly intelligent, broad-eyed, a good conversationalist, glorious, feeding others and loving his family, with an army post by royal favour in the 18th year and a good number of prosperous children. Sutras 26-29 then read, as printed, a strong 5th lord that is also in a malefic's or enemy's sign or debilitated, with loss of children or one issue, riches and penalties from the government; the commentator (pp. 78-79) calls this "confusing", suspects a printing error, and reads it as a strong 5th lord giving wealth and a weak one loss of children or one son, with no bad effects if a benefic aspects Jupiter. With Rahu or Ketu, the text gives loss of children unless a benefic aspects Jupiter. The condition is about the 5th lord, not Jupiter's own dignity. The engine's lines were written from the same chapter: favourable, "strong intelligence and real prosperity through children, often with early recognition"; testing, "real difficulty with children and finances under affliction".

Other Views (p. 79). Brihat Jatak: intelligent. Phaldeepika: intelligent and a minister of the king, but unhappy for want of children. Chamatkar Chintamani: fond of luxuries, a good orator and imaginative writer, sometimes gaining through his children. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

The karaka maxim, and the Lajjit state

For the 5th the Bhrigu Sutras' Note (p. 79) says Phaldeepika's want of children "seems to favour the 'Karko Bhava Nashyas' theory", that a karaka harms the house it signifies, and commends the sutras "supported by Saravali" instead, with a chart in which Jupiter in the 5th gave four children. The sources line up against the maxim: Saravali gives many sons, the sutras prosperous children, Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 children whenever a benefic is in the 5th. This page records the maxim because readers meet it elsewhere; the texts here do not rest on it, and neither does the app.

BPHS Ch. 45 has a rule that does apply here: by Sl. 11-18 a planet in the 5th associated with Rahu or Ketu, or with the Sun, Saturn or Mars, is in the Lajjit, ashamed, state, and by Sl. 19-23 a Lajjit planet in the 5th gives "destruction of progeny, or ... only one surviving child". Jupiter is not tied to the Sun as Mercury is, so the Lajjit condition is a matter of the chart, not of astronomy. The app does not compute avasthas.

BPHS Ch. 16 and Jupiter

  • Sl. 16: children are obtained if the 5th lord is exalted, in the 2nd, 5th or 9th, or joined or aspected by Jupiter. A Jupiter in the 5th joins the 5th lord whenever the lord is at home, and is itself the 5th lord in the 5th for Leo and Scorpio rising.
  • Sl. 12: many children if the 5th lord is strong and the 5th receives the aspect of strong Mercury, Jupiter and Venus. Jupiter occupies the 5th here rather than aspecting it.
  • Sl. 18-19: Jupiter in the 5th with its lord beside Venus, and the 5th lord in an angle with Jupiter "the Karak", each tied to an age. This page names them and this app computes no age.
  • Sl. 1-3: the opening rule tests the Lagna lord and the 5th lord together, in own signs, angles or trines. For Leo and Scorpio rising Jupiter is the 5th lord, for Sagittarius and Pisces rising the Lagna lord; a Jupiter in the 5th is in a trine for both roles.

Ch. 24 Sl. 53, which settles Ch. 16's disagreement (Sl. 8 against Sl. 16) about the 5th lord at home, gives progeny when the lord there is related to a benefic and none when related to a malefic, and "virtuous and dear to friends" either way. For Leo and Scorpio rising that lord is Jupiter itself, a benefic; whether a planet counts as related to itself the sloka does not say, and its company decides the rest.

Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 27 adds the Navamsa: a malefic's Navamsa on the 5th with a malefic's aspect gives progeny "with difficulty". A Jupiter in the 5th is a benefic occupant, which is Sl. 25's favourable condition; Sl. 27 is a separate test of the 5th's Navamsa and the aspects on it, and both can apply to one chart. The Saptamsa (D7) is the divisional chart BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assign to children.

Jupiter's own Ashtakavarga gives a related count. BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 30-33 read knowledge, religion and progeny from the 5th place counted from Jupiter in its Ashtakavarga, a counting rule this page does not reproduce; for a 5th-house Jupiter that place is the 9th house. And Ch. 66 Sl. 53-55 mark the 5th place from a contributor good for five of eight, the Lagna among them, so a Jupiter in the 5th house receives the Lagna's point in its own table. The Ashtakavarga calculator returns the row.

Condensed from Saravali Ch. 30 (saravali.txt 4626-4956) and the Bhrigu Sutras' 5th-house sutras (pp. 22, 37, 51, 66, 78, 91, 102).

Jupiter's Saravali verse is the fullest in the column: happiness, sons, friends, learning, courage and wealth in one line. Its sutra is the one in the column whose condition names the 5th lord rather than the planet's own dignity or a companion, which ties it to Ch. 16's method: the lord's house, its condition and its link to the Lagna lord.

Wealth and Raja Yogas through the 5th

BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 2-8 build all seven Great Affluence yogas on an own-sign planet in the 5th with named planets in the 11th. Sl. 6 is Jupiter's: Jupiter in its own sign in the 5th with Mercury in the 11th, which can occur only for Leo rising (Jupiter in Sagittarius) and Scorpio rising (Jupiter in Pisces). The engine checks all seven as written. From the 5th Jupiter aspects the 11th, where Mercury must be, by its 7th aspect.

BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 31-32 define Kalanidhi Yog: Jupiter in the 2nd or 5th, aspected by Mercury and Venus, giving a native who is virtuous, honoured, healthy, wealthy and learned. Mercury and Venus have only the 7th aspect, so for a 5th-house Jupiter both would sit in the 11th, the house the Great Affluence yoga also uses. detectYogas has no Kalanidhi rule.

BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 33-34 give a kingdom when the 5th and 9th lords join, aspect or face each other, and this app reports a Raja Yoga when they share a house. Jupiter is the 5th lord for Leo and Scorpio and the 9th lord for Aries and Cancer, so a Jupiter in the 5th forms it with the partner beside it: for Leo rising Mars (the 9th lord), for Scorpio rising the Moon (the 9th lord), for Aries rising the Sun (the 5th lord, in its own Leo), and for Cancer rising Mars (the 5th lord, in its own Scorpio). The yogas calculator lists what is present, and BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that the 5th and 9th lords bestow wealth in their dashas.

The aspects on the Lagna, the 9th and the 11th

From the 5th, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 5) returns [11, 9, 1]: the 11th by the 7th aspect, the 9th by the special 5th-place aspect, and the Lagna by the special 9th-place aspect. A Jupiter in the 5th therefore aspects both of the other trines, the 1st and the 9th, and the house of gains. The 5th is one of the places from which Jupiter aspects the Lagna (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5), and BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3 counts a benefic aspect on the Lagna as the balance to a malefic one.

BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 18 says that unobstructed Argala on the 1st, 5th and 9th together makes one "a king and fortunate". Argala is intervention, not aspect, and the two are separate calculations; this page notes only that a 5th-house Jupiter touches all three trines by aspect or occupation. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 19 adds Jupiter's aspect in full where other benefics add a quarter.

What Jupiter owns, from each rising sign

Jupiter is in your 5th when it occupies the fifth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. Learning appears in Ch. 24's lords-in-the-5th slokas as often as children.

Pisces rising gives the only exalted 5th-house Jupiter, as Lagna lord and 10th lord: Ch. 24 Sl. 113 gives the 10th lord in the 5th "all kinds of learning", and BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 37 give a Raj Yoga when the 4th or 10th lord joins the 5th or 9th lord; here Jupiter, the 10th lord, sits in the Moon's sign, so the Moon, the 5th lord, beside it meets that sloka. Virgo rising puts Jupiter in its fall as lord of two angles, the Kendradhipathya case (Ch. 34 Sl. 2-10), here also debilitated.

Leo and Scorpio rising are the 5th-lord-at-home rows. For Leo, Jupiter also owns the 8th, which Sl. 89 reads as dull-witted with limited children, while Ch. 34 Sl. 29-30 still call Jupiter auspicious for Leo; Sagittarius carries a Moolatrikona question (10 degrees in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 and the engine, 5 in the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction). For Scorpio, Jupiter owns the 2nd and 5th, both wealth houses in Ch. 34's sense, and Ch. 34 calls it auspicious.

Sign, company and the Moon

Saravali Ch. 27, Jupiter by sign: Cancer (Pisces rising) a scholar, charitable, with long-lived sons; Sagittarius (Leo rising) a preceptor, lasting wealth; Pisces (Scorpio rising) knows the meaning of the Vedas; Leo (Aries rising) strong, learned, rich; Libra (Gemini rising) a scholar with many sons; Virgo (Taurus rising) experienced in the shastras; Capricorn (Virgo rising) grief and want. Two sign readings, Cancer and Libra, name sons, the 5th house's own subject; the sign readings make no reference to house.

Company, by Saravali Ch. 15: with the Moon (Sl. 10), firm in friendship, wealthy; with Mercury, a scholar; with Venus, lives by learning and argument; with the Sun, virtuous, a king's minister; with Mars, intelligent and expert in speech; with Saturn, heroic and wealthy. The Sun, Mars and Saturn are three of the Lajjit companions of BPHS Ch. 45, so Saravali's kind reading of the pair and the avastha rule point different ways for those three in the 5th.

The engine's Gaja Kesari follows BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4. A 5th-house Jupiter is not in an angle from the Lagna, so it needs the Moon in the 5th, 8th, 11th or 2nd house, and then Venus, Mercury or the Moon joining Jupiter or in the 11th to aspect it, with Jupiter free of fall, combustion and an enemy sign. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 79) says the rapport is lost with Jupiter 6th or 8th from the Moon, here the Moon in the 12th or the 10th. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 ask for the 5th to be counted from the Moon as well as the Lagna, the stronger prevailing. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 19-20's Sharad Yog includes Jupiter in a trine from the Moon with Mars in the 11th, and the app does not code it.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Jupiter's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 5th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides: Jupiter in the 5th in a friendly sign shows the favourable line.

  • Always favourable: Leo (Moolatrikona or own), Scorpio (own) and Pisces (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Virgo (debilitated), and Taurus, Gemini, Capricorn and Aquarius, Mercury's and Venus's signs, Neutral at best.
  • Favourable only with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Aries, Cancer and Sagittarius (otherwise Neutral) and Libra (otherwise Enemy sign).

The row reads Jupiter's dignity; the sutra reads the 5th lord's. Directional strength is low here, two houses from the 7th where it is zero, so this engine gives 1.33 of 4. BPHS Ch. 7 assigns sons and grandsons to the Saptamsa, which the Saptamsa calculator computes; the Putra Karaka appears in the Char Karakas calculator. dashaQuality() grades the period good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign.

Timing

Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 give acquisition of a kingdom, recognition, conveyances, devotion and happiness through spouse and children when Jupiter is exalted, in its own sign or Moolatrikona, in the 5th, 9th or 10th, or in its own or exalted Navamsa. The 5th is named outright, so a Jupiter in the 5th meets that condition by house. Sl. 49-51 give the reverse for a debilitated, combust or malefic-joined Jupiter, with the trouble at the start of the period.

Two other dasha verses touch this placement. Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11 bless the native with children in the Sun's Mahadasha if the Sun is with the 5th lord; for Leo and Scorpio rising the 5th lord is Jupiter, so a Sun beside a 5th-house Jupiter meets that verse, though the Sun is also one of BPHS Ch. 45's Lajjit companions. And in the sign-based dashas, Ch. 50 Sl. 18-19 make a sign's period favourable when benefics occupy the 5th and 9th from it, which a Jupiter in the 5th from the Lagna sign supplies for the Lagna's own period; those systems belong to the Rasi dashas and should not be carried into Vimshottari.

For Leo and Scorpio rising it is also the 5th lord's period, which BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 head "progress in educational sphere and happiness from the children" and this app words as "progress in education and happiness through children". The Jupiter Mahadasha matters to this house in every chart because Jupiter is its fixed significator. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Jupiter in the 5th from the Moon is favourable in its rule.

The 5th-lord rules line up: Jupiter is the 5th lord in the 5th in its own sign (Ch. 24 Sl. 53, Ch. 16 Sl. 16), so the sutra's condition on the 5th lord is met in Jupiter's favour. The Moon in Virgo is 4th from Jupiter, but the four grahas in Virgo aspect the 8th, not Jupiter, so there is no Gaja Kesari; the engine does list Mudrika, which Advanced Predictive Astrology describes as Venus, Jupiter and the Moon "in mutual Kendras or conjunct in one house". Jupiter is retrograde, which earns its motion point and, by Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 39, makes a benefic "strong and ... capable of conferring kingdom"; BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 reverse the timing of results within its period.

Ch. 41 Sl. 6's Great Affluence needs Mercury in the 11th; Mercury is in the 2nd, so it does not form. Mars aspects the 5th from Virgo by its 4th-place aspect, a malefic aspect the engine records; Ch. 45's Lajjit state is defined by association, which the sloka does not define further, and this page does not decide whether an aspect counts. Mercury and Venus are in the 2nd, not the 11th, so Kalanidhi is not met. The dasha runs Mars, then Rahu, before Jupiter's own sixteen years. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Jupiter is in the fifth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Find the 5th lord and check its sign: the sutra's condition.
  3. List Jupiter's company: the Sun, Saturn, Mars or the nodes make the Lajjit state of BPHS Ch. 45.
  4. Read both Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Jupiter rules, and Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 for the Lagna and 5th lords.
  5. Look for the 5th-9th Raja Yoga, and for Leo and Scorpio rising the Great Affluence entry.
  6. Check the Moon's house, and whether a benefic joins or aspects Jupiter, for Gaja Kesari, and repeat Saravali's 5th-house rule from the Moon.

How to weigh a yoga is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Jupiter in the 5th guarantees children." The texts favour it, the sutra conditions it on the 5th lord, and BPHS Ch. 45 reads malefic company against progeny.
  • "The karaka in its own house harms it." The commentator sees that maxim behind Phaldeepika's line and does not follow it; the sutras do not apply it.
  • "Jupiter in the 5th is a wealth yoga." Ch. 41 Sl. 6 needs Jupiter in its own sign and Mercury in the 11th.
  • "Jupiter in the 5th gives Kalanidhi." Only with Mercury and Venus aspecting it, and the app does not compute it.
  • "A favourable app line means the 5th lord is strong." The line reads Jupiter's dignity; the sutra reads the lord's.
  • "Jupiter in the 5th means a gifted child." No verse says so; the texts speak of the native's intelligence and of children in general.

Questions about Jupiter in the 5th

Is Jupiter good in the 5th house?
The verses are favourable: abundant happiness, many sons, learning and wealth (Saravali); high intelligence and prosperous children (Bhrigu Sutras). The sutras qualify it by the 5th lord's strength and by Rahu or Ketu beside Jupiter.
Does Jupiter harm the 5th as its karaka?
The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator thinks Phaldeepika's want of children here "seems to favour" the maxim karako bhava nashaya. He follows the sutras and Saravali, which favour the placement.
What does Jupiter aspect from the 5th?
The 11th by its 7th aspect, the 9th by its 5th-place aspect and the Lagna by its 9th-place aspect.
Which wealth yoga uses Jupiter in the 5th?
BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 6: Jupiter in its own sign in the 5th with Mercury in the 11th, possible only for Leo and Scorpio rising. Kalanidhi (Ch. 36) also uses a 5th-house Jupiter.
Why is my Jupiter in the 5th marked testing?
Its dignity label is not Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly. Virgo rising (fall) and Taurus, Gemini, Capricorn and Aquarius rising (enemy signs) never get the favourable line.
Can Jupiter in the 5th form a Raja Yoga?
With the partner lord beside it: the Sun for Aries, Mars for Leo and Cancer, the Moon for Scorpio rising. The app reports a Raja Yoga when the 5th and 9th lords share a house.
What is the Lajjit state?
BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-23: a planet in the 5th associated with Rahu, Ketu, the Sun, Saturn or Mars, given "destruction of progeny, or ... only one surviving child". The app does not compute it.
Is a Jupiter dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 name the 5th among the houses for a favourable Jupiter dasha. The app grades the period by dignity.
