Jupiter in the 6th house is a case of partial disagreement. Both texts have Jupiter destroy enemies here. Saravali adds that the native is humiliated, weak and indolent, with weak digestion and virility, yet famous through women and widely famous; the Bhrigu Sutras add that the family grows and the native is free from disease when Jupiter is with a benefic, and not when it is with a malefic; and the sutras' commentator warns that Jupiter in a Dusthana, as lord of an auspicious house, damages that house.
It is also one of only two houses, with the 8th, that BPHS names outright in its list of conditions for an adverse Jupiter dasha. This page sets out the verses and the warning, the 6th house's two labels, the Vipareeta yogas that form here for six rising signs, what Jupiter owns from each, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 6th house, Ari Bhava.
Sources, and health
Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The 6th house chapter is about disease, with named conditions and ages; this page names that material without reproducing it. Nothing here is medical advice.
A benefic where benefics are read poorly
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 7 gives Ari Bhava the maternal uncle, doubts about death, enemies, ulcers and the step-mother, and Ch. 17 makes diseases its subject. The house is an Apoklima, a Dusthana and an Upachaya at once (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 say association with the Trikas inflicts evils, and Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 say benefics prove adverse in the 6th, 8th and 12th.
The planet table for the 6th shows the Upachaya principle at work: the natural malefics get the best readings, the benefics the worst. Jupiter is one of the benefics read poorly in Saravali (humiliated) while still destroying enemies, and Saravali Ch. 30 is kind to Jupiter only in the eight houses outside the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator states the house's double nature directly, under Mars in the 6th (p. 53): the 6th, "while being an Upachaya house is also a Dusthana".
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 55
The verse in full: the native will lack digestive fire and masculine virility, be humiliated, weak, indolent, will become famous on account of females, will destroy his enemies and be widely famous. No condition is stated. The body clauses are the text's, not medical advice.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 32-34, and the commentator
The sutras (p. 79): the native destroys his enemies; his family grows (some read this as nephews and in-laws); grandchildren; marks of wounds on the body. With a benefic, free from disease; with a malefic or in a malefic's house, rheumatism or diseases of cold; in Saturn's signs with Rahu or Ketu, "diseases of the worst type". These are the text's statements, not medical advice. The commentator says Jupiter gives good effects here "unless he is afflicted", doubts the grandchildren, and warns that in a dusthana, as lord of an auspicious house, Jupiter damages that house. He says the same of Jupiter in the 12th (p. 86): it loses its good significations and harms the good houses it owns. The engine's provenance note for its Jupiter lines records that the testing line for the 6th says "even Jupiter is limited here".
Other Views (p. 80). Brihat Jatak: without enemies. Phaldeepika: destroys enemies, lazy and humiliated, interested in reciting mantras, clever. Chamatkar Chintamani: destroys enemies, happy through his wife but not his maternal uncle, sickly, with a sickly mother. The Note finds the Bhrigu Sutras more logical because they read company. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

Jupiter beside the other planets in the 6th
| Planet | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 7: strong, affluent, famous | Many enemies but well off |
| Moon | Sl. 19: stomach ailments | Poor and unwell; strong with a benefic |
| Mars | Sl. 31: strong, great among relatives | Famous, defeats enemies |
| Mercury | Sl. 43: successful in disputes; indolent, much insulted | Respected by the ruler, proficient in controversy |
| Jupiter | Sl. 55: destroys enemies, famous; humiliated, indolent | Destroys enemies, family grows; free from disease with a benefic |
| Venus | Sl. 67: many foes, lacking wealth | Destruction of enemies; wasteful expenditure |
| Saturn | Sl. 79: courageous, conquers many enemies | Destruction of enemies; with Mars a moderate Raja Yoga |
Jupiter is the one benefic both texts agree destroys enemies; for Venus the two texts disagree outright. And Jupiter's sutra shares a condition with the Moon's: a benefic companion turns the result, freedom from disease for Jupiter, a strong constitution for the Moon. Jupiter is a benefic in every company, so its own presence beside the Moon in the 6th supplies the Moon's condition.
The commentator's warning, by rising sign
Which auspicious houses Jupiter carries into the 6th depends on the Lagna, and the warning lands differently for each. Jupiter owns a trine (the 9th or 5th) for Aries, Cancer, Leo and Scorpio rising, the Lagna for Sagittarius and Pisces, an angle for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, and the wealth houses (2nd, 11th) for Taurus, Scorpio and Aquarius. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-36 call Jupiter auspicious for Aries, Cancer, Leo and Scorpio, so those are the four Lagnas where the commentator's "lord of an auspicious house" applies most plainly.
BPHS Ch. 24 gives the house-by-house version: the 9th lord in the 6th has meagre prosperity and trouble from enemies (Sl. 102); the 5th lord in the 6th children who behave like opponents (Sl. 54); the Lagna lord in the 6th trouble from enemies only if related to a malefic without a benefic aspect (Sl. 6); the 10th lord in the 6th skilful yet short of wealth (Sl. 114). Each describes the owned house damaged, which is the commentator's point in Parashara's own slokas.
The Vipareeta yogas: six rising signs
For the other six Lagnas Jupiter owns a Trika house, and this app's yogas calculator names a Vipareeta Raja Yoga: Harsha for the 6th lord, Sarala for the 8th, Vimala for the 12th, each read as a difficult house turning into an unexpected source of gain after struggle. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator, under Jupiter in the 12th (p. 86), quotes Uttara Kalamrita that a lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th in another of those houses forms a Vipareeta Raja yoga, and extends it on his own to a lord in its own Trika house.
| Ascendant | Jupiter in | Jupiter rules | Yoga the engine names | BPHS Ch. 24 for those lords in the 6th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cancer | Sagittarius (Moolatrikona to 10 deg, then own) | 6th, 9th | Harsha | Sl. 66: enmity with own kin, friendly to others. Sl. 102: meagre prosperity |
| Libra | Pisces (own) | 3rd, 6th | Harsha | Sl. 66 as above. Sl. 30: at odds with siblings, affluent |
| Taurus | Libra (enemy) | 8th, 11th | Sarala | Sl. 90: wins over enemies; illness. Sl. 126: illness, foreign places |
| Leo | Capricorn (debilitated) | 5th, 8th | Sarala | Sl. 90 as above. Sl. 54: children like opponents |
| Aries | Virgo (enemy) | 9th, 12th | Vimala | Sl. 138: enmity with own people. Sl. 102 as above |
| Capricorn | Gemini (enemy) | 12th, 3rd | Vimala | Sl. 138 as above. Sl. 30 as above |
The sourcing: the engine's reference for the yoga is a modern case book without a numbered definition, and BPHS Ch. 24 reads the 6th lord in the 6th mildly (Sl. 66) and shows no sign of a Dusthana lord in a Dusthana producing a Raja Yoga. Cancer and Leo rising sit on both sides of the commentator's warning at once: Jupiter carries a trine (the 9th, the 5th) and a Trika house (the 6th, the 8th) into the 6th, so the warning and the Vipareeta reading apply to the same planet.
Cancer and Libra rising also make Jupiter the 6th lord in its own sign in the 6th, the strong 6th lord the Bhrigu view reads against. Venus Sutra 36 and the commentator (p. 92): a strong 6th lord increases relations and enemies, a weak one destroys them; "if the sixth house gets strength, there will be more enemies and diseases". BPHS states no such inversion, and the app's house card reads a strong 6th lord as support. Under Jupiter in the 10th (p. 84) the commentator quotes Bhavartha Ratnakar that Jupiter gives yoga effects for Libra rising despite ruling the 3rd and 6th.
Sagittarius and Pisces rising: the Lagna lord in the 6th
For Sagittarius rising Jupiter in the 6th is in Taurus, an enemy's sign by nature; for Pisces rising it is in Leo, a friend's. Both make it the Lagna lord in the 6th, which BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 6 reads as no physical happiness and trouble from enemies only if related to a malefic and without a benefic aspect. BPHS Ch. 42, among its penury combinations, includes the Lagna lord in the 6th with the 6th lord in the Lagna under a Marak's influence (Sl. 3) and the Lagna lord joined to a Trika lord without benefic aspect (Sl. 6); each needs two or three conditions.
Pisces rising adds a further turn: Jupiter is also the 10th lord there, and Ch. 24 Sl. 114 reads the 10th lord in the 6th as bereft of paternal bliss, skilful yet short of wealth and troubled by enemies. Ch. 34 Sl. 43-44 name a Yoga of Jupiter with Mars for Pisces; Mars is the 9th lord, and Jupiter in the 6th with Mars beside it is a 9th-and-10th-lord pair in a Dusthana, which this app's Dharma-Karmadhipati rule (an angle or trine only) does not count.
The remaining rising signs
| Ascendant | Jupiter's sign | Natural dignity | Jupiter rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 6th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini | Scorpio | Friendly | 7th, 10th | Sl. 78: friction with the spouse. Sl. 114: skilful yet short of wealth |
| Virgo | Aquarius | Neutral | 4th, 7th | Sl. 42: lacking maternal happiness, independent. Sl. 78 as above |
| Scorpio | Aries | Friendly | 2nd, 5th | Sl. 18: with a benefic gains through enemies. Sl. 54: children like opponents |
| Aquarius | Cancer | Exalted | 2nd, 11th | Sl. 18 as above. Sl. 126: illness, foreign places, troubled by enemies |
Aquarius rising gives the only exalted 6th-house Jupiter, carrying both wealth houses into the house of enemies; Sl. 18 turns the 2nd lord's result entirely on company, gains through enemies with a benefic and loss with a malefic, and Jupiter, a benefic, is its own companion here. Gemini and Virgo rising carry two angles into the 6th, the Kendra lordship this app lists as a mild Kendradhipathya Dosha. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Ch. 17 and Jupiter
The 6th house chapter names Jupiter twice. Sl. 9-12 1/2 read the 6th and 8th lords together in the Lagna with a different result for each planet that joins them, and say Jupiter in that position destroys any disease; that is Jupiter in the Lagna, not the 6th. Sl. 27 gives inimical sons for three conditions together: the 5th lord in the 6th, the 6th lord with Jupiter, and the 12th lord in the Lagna. A Jupiter in the 6th joins the 6th lord whenever that lord is at home, which supplies the second condition; the other two are separate.
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 13-14, Shankh Yog, needs a strong Lagna lord and the 5th and 6th lords in mutual angles, and is one of the few yogas in which the 6th lord is a positive ingredient. Jupiter is the 5th lord for Leo and Scorpio and the 6th lord for Cancer and Libra.
Aspects, strength and wealth
From the 6th, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 6) returns [12, 10, 2]: the 12th by the 7th aspect, the 10th by the special 5th-place aspect, and the 2nd by the special 9th-place aspect. The 2nd is one of Jupiter's own karaka houses; the 10th is the house of work. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 19 adds Jupiter's aspect in full. The texts state no specific result for these aspects.
Directional strength is near its lowest, one house from the 7th where it is zero, so this engine gives 0.67 of 4, and an Apoklima gives a quarter of Kendradi Bal (BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5). Jupiter's own Ashtakavarga (BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 53-55) marks the 6th place from a contributor good for four of eight, the Lagna among them, so a 6th-house Jupiter receives the Lagna's point in its own table. The Ashtakavarga calculator and Shad Bala calculator show both.
The Upachaya label counts in two wealth rules: BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 6 (very affluent with all three benefics in Upachayas from the Moon) and Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 32 (benefics in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Lagna or the Moon). A Jupiter in the 6th counts toward both while its own reading in the house is mixed; the sources leave that tension unresolved.
Sign, company and the Moon
Saravali Ch. 27, Jupiter by sign: Cancer (Aquarius rising) a scholar, charitable, famous; Sagittarius (Cancer rising) a preceptor, lasting wealth; Pisces (Libra rising) knows the Vedas, fearless, firm; Leo (Pisces rising) lasting in friendship and in enmity; Scorpio (Gemini rising) many difficulties; Aries (Scorpio rising) many enemies and expenses; Capricorn (Leo rising) grief and want. Two sign readings, Leo's enmity and Aries's many enemies, touch the 6th house's own subject; they make no reference to house.
Company decides the sutra's freedom-from-disease clause: a benefic beside Jupiter. Saravali Ch. 15 reads the benefic pairs as firm in friendship and wealthy (the Moon), a scholar (Mercury), one who lives by learning and argument (Venus). The engine's Gaja Kesari follows BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4, so a 6th-house Jupiter can form it only with the Moon in the 6th, 9th, 12th or 3rd house and a benefic joining it or in the 12th to aspect it; Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 79) says the rapport is lost with Jupiter 6th or 8th from the Moon, here the Moon in the 1st or the 11th.
Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 25-66 read each aspect on Jupiter by the sign it occupies, and Saturn's is favourable on a Jupiter in Mercury's signs, in Cancer (printed under "Gemini/Virgo" in the translation) and in Saturn's own, unfavourable in Leo and in Jupiter's own signs, mixed elsewhere. For a 6th-house Jupiter that sorts the Lagnas: a Saturn aspect is read well for Aries, Leo, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising (Jupiter in Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius, Gemini, Cancer), and badly for Cancer, Libra and Pisces rising (Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces, Leo). Two of the three badly read rows are the Harsha Lagnas, where Jupiter is the 6th lord at home. The Moon's aspect on Jupiter reads well in every sign group, with one blemish ("dirty") in Leo.
BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 read children from the 5th house counted from Jupiter; from a 6th-house Jupiter that is the 10th house. Jupiter's own rules for counting children are not reproduced here. The engine marks Jupiter combust within 11 degrees of the Sun, which happens on 7.3 per cent of days in this engine's positions, and retrograde on about 30 per cent, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 reverses the order of results within its dasha.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading's planet row is favourable only when dignity is strong and the house is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. A Jupiter in the 6th therefore always prints "health strain and reduced benefit, since even Jupiter is limited here", even exalted for Aquarius rising or in its own sign for Cancer and Libra; the favourable line written for the 6th is never printed.
dashaQuality() rates any dasha lord in a dusthana challenging. The Shad Bala does not read the house verdict, so an exalted 6th-house Jupiter can be Strong beside a testing row and a challenging dasha grade; the worked chart below is that case. The house card for the 6th takes its tone from the 6th lord's dignity without the Bhrigu inversion. For Cancer and Libra rising that lord is Jupiter in its own sign, so the house card reads favourable while the planet row for the same Jupiter reads testing and the engine also lists Harsha Yoga: three outputs from one placement, each following its own rule.
Timing
Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 49-51 give the reverse of Jupiter's good dasha for a Jupiter that is debilitated, combust, joined by malefics, or in the 6th or 8th: loss of residential premises, anxiety, distress to children, loss of cattle. The 6th is named outright. The same slokas add that the trouble belongs to the start of the period and the later part brings gains and recognition, and the app's testing theme for Jupiter, "a slower, more testing period early on, though effects usually improve as the period matures", follows them.
For Cancer and Libra rising it is also the 6th lord's period, which BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 head "danger from enemies and ill health" and this app words as "friction with rivals or health matters needing attention". Ch. 42 Sl. 13 adds that a planet associated with a 6th, 8th or 12th lord, without a trine lord's aspect, harms finances in its dasha. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Jupiter in the 6th from the Moon is "indifferent" in its rule.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 02:12 IST on 18 May 2015 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Aquarius-rising case: Jupiter exalted in the 6th as lord of the 2nd and 11th. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Aquarius 25.88 deg |
| Jupiter | Cancer 20.77 deg, 6th house, Exalted; 2nd and 11th lord |
| 4th house | Sun 2.56, Mars 9.99 (combust) and Mercury 19.03 deg, all in Taurus |
| Moon | Aries 28.41 deg, 3rd house |
| Venus; Saturn | Gemini 16.72 deg, 5th; Scorpio 7.94 deg (retrograde), 10th |
| Rahu; Ketu | Virgo, 8th; Pisces, 2nd |
| House line | Testing: phJupiter6U |
| dashaQuality for Jupiter | Challenging |
| Yogas reported (selection) | None naming Jupiter; Gaj Kesari does not form (no benefic joins or aspects Jupiter) |
| Shad Bala (engine, of 20) | 13.17, Strong: position 10, aspect 1.5, natural 0.5, motion 0, direction 0.67, time 0.5 |
| Dasha | Sun to 4 August 2020, then the Moon to 2030 |
The grades split along the line this page describes. Exaltation gives the full position score and a Strong total, and the Moon in the 3rd is an angle from Jupiter, but no benefic joins Jupiter or stands in the 12th to aspect it, so the engine's Gaja Kesari does not form. The house makes the planet row testing and the dasha grade challenging, and BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 49-51 name the 6th among the adverse conditions for a Jupiter dasha. Jupiter owns the 2nd and 11th for Aquarius, both wealth houses; no Vipareeta yoga forms, since it owns no Trika house.
No planet joins Jupiter, so the sutra's "with a benefic" clause is not met by company, and Ch. 24 Sl. 18's 2nd lord in the 6th has no other planet to read. The engine's strength reason text lists no aspect on Jupiter. The Moon in Aries is 10th from Jupiter, and Saravali Ch. 27 reads the Moon's aspect on Jupiter in Cancer as wealth and conveyances, but the Moon in the 3rd does not aspect the 6th by this engine's whole-sign rule. The dasha runs the Sun and then the Moon, so Jupiter's own sixteen years come later. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own chart
- Confirm Jupiter is in the sixth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Find what Jupiter rules: a trine or the Lagna is the commentator's warning; a Trika house is a Vipareeta case.
- Read both Ch. 24 slokas for those lords in the 6th.
- Check Jupiter's company for the sutra's benefic clause.
- For Cancer and Libra rising, read the house card beside the Bhrigu view of a strong 6th lord.
- Count the benefics in the Upachayas for the Dhana Yoga rules.
How to weigh a yoga entry is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.
Over-readings
- "Jupiter protects any house." Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 say benefics prove adverse in the 6th, 8th and 12th.
- "Jupiter in the 6th means no enemies." Both texts say it destroys them; the Bhrigu view also says a strong 6th lord brings more.
- "Exalted Jupiter in the 6th is favourable in the app." The planet row is always testing in a dusthana.
- "Harsha or Sarala makes it a Raja Yoga." BPHS Ch. 24 does not read a Dusthana lord in a Dusthana that way; the yoga is later practice.
- "A Strong Shad Bala means a good dasha." BPHS Ch. 47 names the 6th among Jupiter's adverse dasha conditions, and the app grades it challenging.
- "Jupiter in the 6th means illness." The verses name weak digestion and freedom from disease with a benefic; none of it is medical advice.
- "Jupiter in the 6th means a career in service." Service and employees are on the later list for the 6th, not BPHS's; no verse for this placement names an occupation.
Questions about Jupiter in the 6th
- Is Jupiter bad in the 6th house?
- Mixed. Both texts have Jupiter destroy enemies; Saravali adds humiliation and indolence, the sutras a growing family. The commentator warns Jupiter damages the auspicious houses it owns from a Dusthana.
- Does Jupiter in the 6th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
- For six rising signs this app names one: Harsha for Cancer and Libra, Sarala for Taurus and Leo, Vimala for Aries and Capricorn.
- What does Jupiter aspect from the 6th?
- The 12th by its 7th aspect, the 10th by its 5th-place aspect and the 2nd by its 9th-place aspect.
- Why is the app's line always testing here?
- The planet row needs strong dignity and a house outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The 6th fails the second test for every sign.
- What does the commentator's warning mean?
- That a Jupiter in a Dusthana carries the good significations of the houses it owns into that house. Which houses depends on the rising sign: the 9th for Aries and Cancer, the 5th for Leo and Scorpio.
- Is a Jupiter dasha difficult with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 49-51 name the 6th among the conditions for an adverse Jupiter dasha, with the trouble at the start and gains later. The app grades it challenging.
- Can Jupiter in the 6th help wealth?
- The Upachaya rules count a benefic in the 6th toward wealth yogas, and BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 18 gives the 2nd lord in the 6th gains through enemies with a benefic.
- Does BPHS Ch. 17 name Jupiter?
- Twice: Jupiter joining the 6th and 8th lords in the Lagna destroys disease (Sl. 9-12), and the 6th lord with Jupiter is one of three conditions in Sl. 27's combination for inimical sons. Neither is a reading of Jupiter in the 6th alone.
- Does a strong 6th-lord Jupiter mean more enemies?
- In the Bhrigu view (Venus Sutra 36 and the commentary, p. 92), yes; BPHS states no such rule, and the app reads a strong 6th lord as support.
