The 6th house is where the classical texts put the things that push back at a person: opponents, illness, injuries, debts and disputes. Its Sanskrit name says so directly. Ari means enemy, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) calls the house Ari Bhava throughout. It is the sixth sign counted from your Lagna, and it is the most contradictory house in the chart, because the same texts that call it an evil house also list it among the houses of growth.
This page sets out what the texts actually say about it, sloka by sloka, and how this app computes it. The main source is BPHS, which gives the house its own chapter (Ch. 17) and twelve slokas on its lord (Ch. 24). Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras are used for the planets placed in it. Where the sources disagree, the disagreement is shown. Where they are silent, so is this page. To follow along, open your chart in the birth chart calculator. You need a birth time, because houses do not exist without an Ascendant.
A note on health content
Much of the classical writing on this house is about disease. This page reports what the texts say as a matter of record. None of it is medical advice, a diagnosis, or a prediction about your body, and this app does not treat it as one.
What the 6th house signifies
BPHS defines the house in one sloka, Ch. 11 Sl. 7. Five things are to be estimated from Ari Bhava: the maternal uncle, doubts about death, enemies, ulcers, and the step-mother, followed by an 'etc.'. When Parashara opens the house's own chapter he narrows it further: Ch. 17 Sl. 1 announces 'the effects produced by Ari Bhava, relating to diseases, ulcers etc.' So in the primary source the house is enemies and bodily harm first, with two relatives attached.
Saravali gives the house two names in its Rasi chapter (Sl. 26-27): Ari, enemy, and Vrana, a wound or ulcer. A few slokas later (Sl. 28-31) it adds a third, Shatkona. The two main names match Parashara's two main topics exactly.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentary in this corpus gives the longer list most readers know today: sickness, diseases, nursing, food, service, employees, subordinates or servants, debts, cattle, tenants, enemies, maternal uncle, miserliness, intense anguish and litigation. Service, employees, debts and litigation are the notable additions. BPHS Ch. 11 does not put service or debt in the 6th; in fact Sl. 11 of the same chapter lists debts under the 10th house. So 'the 6th house shows your job and your loans' follows the later tradition, not Parashara's own list. This page reports both and does not merge them.
| Source | What it places in the 6th house |
|---|---|
| BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 7 | Maternal uncle, doubts about death, enemies, ulcers, step-mother |
| BPHS Ch. 17 Sl. 1 | Diseases and ulcers (the subject of the whole chapter) |
| Saravali, Rasi chapter Sl. 26-31 | Names only: Ari (enemy), Vrana (wound), Shatkona |
| Bhrigu Sutras, house significations | Sickness, nursing, food, service, employees and subordinates, debts, cattle, tenants, enemies, maternal uncle, miserliness, anguish, litigation |
| This app (house card title) | 'Health & service', with the short line 'obstacles, daily work, conflict' |
Three labels at once: Dusthana, Upachaya, Apoklima
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 sorts the twelve houses into groups, and the 6th falls into three of them in the same passage. It is an Apoklima, a cadent house, with the 3rd, 9th and 12th. It is a Dusthan, an 'evil Bhava', with the 8th and the 12th. And it is an Upachaya with the 3rd, 10th and 11th. Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 repeats all three and adds a fourth word for the first group: Ari, Randhr and Vyaya are the Trikas. Saravali's Rasi chapter (Sl. 33) gives the same four Upachaya houses.
- Dusthana or Trika. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 states the consequence plainly: 'association with Trikas will inflict evils', while Kendras and trines turn 'even evil into auspiciousness'. This is the rule behind most of the difficult readings on this page.
- Upachaya. The word means increase. Neither text explains the term in the passages that list it, but both use it in wealth rules: BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 6 says a person is very affluent when all three benefics are in Upachayas counted from the Moon, and Saravali's Dhana Yoga sloka (Sl. 32) says the same of the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Lagna or the Moon, with two benefics giving moderate wealth and one giving little.
- Apoklima. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 gives a planet in an Apoklima only a quarter of the positional strength called Kendradi Bal; a planet in an angle gets the full amount. Saravali (Sl. 32) adds a timing idea: planets in angles give their effects in boyhood, in Panapharas in middle age, and in Apoklimas at the close of life.
The first two labels pull in opposite directions, and the texts do not reconcile them. The Bhrigu Sutras commentator notices the same thing. Discussing a chart with Mars and Rahu in the 6th and lifelong ill health, he writes that the sixth house 'while being an Upachaya house is also a Dusthana', and that the Sutras 'have apparently not taken this into account'. Both labels are real, and the texts leave the reader to weigh them.
BPHS Ch. 32 also lists a fixed significator for each house in order: Sun, Jupiter, Mars, Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn. The sixth name in that list is Mars. So in Parashara's scheme Mars is the standing karaka of the 6th house, as it is of the 3rd.
Which planet rules your 6th house
This app uses whole-sign houses, so your 6th house is simply the sixth sign from the sign your Ascendant falls in, and its lord is that sign's ruler. If you do not know your rising sign, the Lagna calculator finds it.
| Lagna | 6th house sign | 6th lord |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Virgo | Mercury |
| Taurus | Libra | Venus |
| Gemini | Scorpio | Mars |
| Cancer | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| Leo | Capricorn | Saturn |
| Virgo | Aquarius | Saturn |
| Libra | Pisces | Jupiter |
| Scorpio | Aries | Mars |
| Sagittarius | Taurus | Venus |
| Capricorn | Gemini | Mercury |
| Aquarius | Cancer | Moon |
| Pisces | Leo | Sun |
Two rows deserve a second look. For a Taurus Lagna the 6th lord is Venus, and for a Scorpio Lagna it is Mars. In both cases that planet also rules the Lagna itself. No rule that says 'the 6th lord is harmful' can be applied to it without remembering that it is also the Lagna lord.
How BPHS judges the 6th house (Ch. 17)
Chapter 17 has 28 slokas. Almost all of them are about bodily harm, and many attach a specific disease and a specific age. This page describes how the chapter reasons and does not reproduce those as predictions.
| Slokas | Subject | What the text does |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Ulcers and bruises | The 6th lord in the 6th itself, in the Lagna or in the 8th indicates ulcers or bruises on the body; the sign that becomes the 6th house shows which limb |
| 3-5 | Relatives | The same test applied to a relative's karaka or house lord, with a planet-to-body list: Sun head, Moon face, Mars neck, Mercury navel, Jupiter nose, Venus eyes, Saturn feet, Rahu and Ketu abdomen |
| 6-8½ | Named conditions | Combinations of the Lagna lord, Mars, Mercury, Moon, Rahu and Saturn tied to facial and skin diseases |
| 9-12½ | Diseases in general | The 6th and 8th lords together in the Lagna, with a different result for each planet that joins them. Jupiter in that position is said to destroy any disease |
| 13-19½ | Timing of illness | Seven combinations, each with ages attached (from 6 to 59) |
| 20-25 | Unfortunate years | Dangers from animals, fire, water and illness at stated ages |
| 26 | Loss through enemies | Loss of wealth when the 11th and 6th lords exchange signs |
| 27 | Inimical sons | The 5th lord in the 6th, the 6th lord with Jupiter, and the 12th lord in the Lagna, all together |
| 28 | Exchange with the Lagna lord | The Lagna lord and 6th lord in exchange, again with ages attached |
Three things are worth taking from the chapter as method. First, the house is judged through its lord: Sl. 2 opens with where the 6th lord sits, not with what occupies the house. Second, the sign of the 6th house localises the result ('will lead to the knowledge of the concerned limb'), which is why the same placement reads differently for different Ascendants. Third, the 6th is repeatedly paired with the 8th. Sl. 2, 3-5, 9-12 and 13-19 all bring in Randhr or its lord. In Parashara's treatment these two Dusthanas work as a pair.
One clause in Sl. 9-12 is worded in terms of caste (Rahu's result). This page does not repeat it. The ages are also left out deliberately: a sloka that fixes fever at 6 and 12 is a statement about a multi-factor combination in an ancient text, not a schedule for a living person.
When a house prospers, and why this one is odd
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 gives the general rule for any house. A bhava prospers when it is joined or aspected by a benefic, or when its lord is in a good state or well placed. It is harmed when its lord does not aspect it, or when its lord is with a malefic or with the lord of an evil house, the 6th among them.
For most houses 'prospers' is plainly good: a prospering 4th means more home and comfort. For the 6th the question is what, exactly, is supposed to prosper. The Bhrigu Sutras take a clear line. Venus Sutra 36 says that if the lord of the sixth is strong, relations and enemies increase, and if it is with a malefic, debilitated or with the Moon, enemies are destroyed. The Sun's sutras say the same: a weak 6th lord means destruction of enemies. The commentator spells out the logic: 'if the sixth house gets strength, there will be more enemies and diseases and if the sixth house is weak there will be no diseases and no enemies'.
BPHS does not state that inversion as a rule. Its nearest equivalents are specific: the 6th lord in the 12th gives long life (Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7), and the 8th lord in the 6th wins over enemies (Ch. 24 Sl. 90). So two classical attitudes are on record: in Parashara the 6th and its lord mostly harm what they touch, and in the Bhrigu Sutras a weakened 6th is a relief.
The 6th lord in each of the twelve houses
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 61-72 gives one sloka for the 6th lord in each house. They are paraphrased below. Remarks about a person's sexual conduct or moral character, and the purely bodily clauses, are left out; everything else is kept, including the favourable parts, which are more numerous than the house's reputation suggests.
| 6th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | What the sloka says |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 61 | Sickly, at odds with their own people, yet famous, rich, honourable, adventurous and virtuous |
| 2nd | Sl. 62 | Adventurous, well known among their people, living in other countries, happy, a skilful speaker, absorbed in their own work |
| 3rd | Sl. 63 | Given to anger, lacking courage, at odds with siblings, with disobedient servants |
| 4th | Sl. 64 | Lacking happiness from the mother, intelligent, jealous, and very rich |
| 5th | Sl. 65 | Fluctuating finances, friction with children and friends; happy, self-interested and kind |
| 6th | Sl. 66 | Enmity with their own kin but friendly to others; middling happiness in matters such as wealth |
| 7th | Sl. 67 | Little happiness through marriage; famous, virtuous, honourable, adventurous and wealthy |
| 8th | Sl. 68 | Sickly and hostile, desiring what belongs to others |
| 9th | Sl. 69 | Trades in wood and stones (the translator notes the word can also mean poison); fluctuating professional fortunes |
| 10th | Sl. 70 | Well known among their people, not respectful toward the father, happy in foreign countries, a gifted speaker |
| 11th | Sl. 71 | Gains wealth through enemies; virtuous and adventurous, with somewhat less happiness from children |
| 12th | Sl. 72 | Spends on vices and is hostile to learned people |
Read down the column and a pattern appears. In the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 10th and 11th the sloka contains wealth, fame or honour alongside its difficulty. The plainly harsh slokas are the 3rd, 8th and 12th. Sl. 71 is the clearest statement of the Upachaya idea in the whole chapter: the lord of enemies in the house of gains means gain through enemies.
Notice also what Parashara does with the 6th lord in the 6th, 8th and 12th. Sl. 66 is mild, and Sl. 68 and 72 are negative. There is no sign here of the idea that a Dusthana lord in a Dusthana produces a Raja Yoga. That idea, Vipareeta Raja Yoga, comes from elsewhere and is discussed with the other yogas below.
Every other house lord placed in the 6th
The same chapter can be read the other way: what happens to each house when its lord goes to the 6th. This is where the Trika rule of Ch. 32 is most visible.
| Lord of | BPHS Ch. 24 | In the 6th house |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 6 | If related to a malefic and with no benefic aspect: little physical happiness and trouble from enemies |
| 2nd | Sl. 18 | With a benefic, gains wealth through enemies; with a malefic, loss through enemies |
| 3rd | Sl. 30 | At odds with siblings and the maternal uncle, dear to the maternal aunt, and affluent |
| 4th | Sl. 42 | Lacking maternal happiness, given to anger, independent in action |
| 5th | Sl. 54 | Children who behave like opponents, or loss of them, or an adopted child |
| 7th | Sl. 78 | Friction with the spouse, anger, little happiness |
| 8th | Sl. 90 | Wins over enemies; illness, and danger in childhood |
| 9th | Sl. 102 | Meagre prosperity, little happiness from maternal relatives, troubled by enemies |
| 10th | Sl. 114 | Lacking paternal happiness; skilful yet short of wealth and troubled by enemies |
| 11th | Sl. 126 | Illness, living in foreign places, troubled by enemies |
| 12th | Sl. 138 | Enmity with their own people, anger, misery |
Two of these slokas carry their own conditions, and they are the useful ones. Sl. 6 applies only if the Lagna lord is related to a malefic and has no benefic aspect; the bare placement is not enough. Sl. 18 turns entirely on company: the same 2nd lord in the 6th gains through enemies with a benefic and loses through them with a malefic. Parashara is showing how these placements should be read, by who is with the planet and who aspects it.
Planets in the 6th house
For planets sitting in the house, the two detailed sources are Saravali Ch. 30 and the Bhrigu Sutras. They are set side by side here because they do not always agree. Bodily and sexual clauses are trimmed, and a caste-worded opening in the Sun's sutras is omitted.
| Planet | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 7: strong digestion, strong, affluent, famous for virtues, a king or an army chief | Sutras 59-68: many enemies but very well off; good reputation with mental worry; good health if the 6th lord is with a benefic |
| Moon | Sl. 19: stomach ailments; a weak Moon shortens life | Sutras 33-40: poor and unwell; a waning Moon gives fully malefic results; with a benefic, a strong constitution |
| Mars | Sl. 31: strong digestion, good-looking, tall, strong, great among relatives | Sutras 46-53: famous, successful in undertakings, defeats enemies; with a malefic the results still come but with bodily pains |
| Mercury | Sl. 43: always successful in litigation and disputes; prone to illness, indolent, harsh in speech | Sutras 41-47: respected by the ruler, a writer, proficient in controversy; obstacles in education |
| Jupiter | Sl. 55: weak digestion, humiliated and indolent, yet destroys enemies and is widely famous | Sutras 32-34: destroys enemies, the family grows; free from disease when with a benefic |
| Venus | Sl. 67: many foes, lacking wealth, easily startled | Sutras 34-36: many relations, destruction of enemies, wasteful expenditure |
| Saturn | Sl. 79: good-looking, courageous, a big eater, conquers many enemies | Sutras 27-31: little learning, destruction of enemies; with Mars, travels widely and has a moderate Raja Yoga |
| Rahu / Ketu | Not covered in Ch. 30 | Sutras 14-16: tolerant and very happy; poor if the Moon joins the node |
The table shows the Upachaya principle at work without anyone naming it. The three natural malefics that the texts list, Sun, Mars and Saturn, get the best readings: strength, affluence, command, enemies conquered. The benefics get the worst: Saravali's Venus has many foes and no wealth, the Moon is sick, Jupiter is humiliated. The Bhrigu commentator states the reasoning for Saturn directly ('the sixth is an upachaya house; Saturn in this house will give benefic results in regard to finances') and for the Moon as well: placed in the sixth she 'will lose all her good significations'.
The clear disagreement is Venus. Saravali gives many foes; the Bhrigu Sutras give destruction of enemies. The commentator himself calls some of the Venus sutras 'very confusing', pointing out that children and grandchildren are promised from a house and a planet that signify neither. Jupiter is a partial disagreement: both sources destroy the enemies, but Saravali adds humiliation and the commentator adds a warning that Jupiter in a Dusthana, as lord of an auspicious house, damages that house.
Each placement has its own page with the full text: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in the 6th house.
Named combinations that involve the 6th house
Harsha Yoga, the 6th-house Vipareeta Raja Yoga
This app's yogas calculator reports Harsha Yoga when the lord of your 6th house sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. It is one of three Vipareeta Raja Yogas, with Sarala for the 8th lord and Vimala for the 12th. The app reads it as a difficult house's energy turning into an unexpected source of gain, 'often most visible after periods of real struggle rather than as easy, steady fortune'.
The sourcing should be stated exactly. The engine's reference is the modern case-study book Advanced Predictive Astrology, which names and uses Vipareeta Raja Yoga in worked charts but does not print a numbered definition; the engine therefore applies the standard formation rule. BPHS Ch. 24, as shown above, gives the 6th lord in the 6th a mild reading and in the 8th and 12th a negative one. So Harsha Yoga and Parashara's slokas describe the same placements differently, and the app shows both: the yoga in the yogas list, the placement in the house card.
Shankh Yog
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 13-14 forms Shankh Yog when the Lagna lord is strong and the lords of the 5th and 6th are in mutual Kendras, that is, in angles from each other. The result given is wealth, spouse and children, a kindly and intelligent nature and long life. It is one of the few classical yogas in which the 6th lord is a required and positive ingredient.
Benefics in Upachayas
As noted earlier, BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 6 and Saravali both treat benefics in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th (from the Moon in BPHS; from the Lagna or the Moon in Saravali) as a wealth combination. Yet Saravali Ch. 30 reads Jupiter and Venus in the 6th poorly. A benefic there is weak for its own results and still counts toward a wealth yoga; the sources leave that tension unresolved.
Combinations for penury
BPHS Ch. 42 names the 6th house or its lord in several of its poverty combinations: the Lagna lord in the 6th with the 6th lord in the Lagna under the influence of a Marak lord (Sl. 3); the Lagna lord with a malefic in the 6th, 8th or 12th while the 2nd lord is debilitated or in an enemy's sign (Sl. 5); the Lagna lord joined to the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th with no benefic aspect (Sl. 6); and the 5th and 9th lords in the 6th and 12th respectively, aspected by Maraks (Sl. 7). Every one of these needs two or three conditions at once. None is triggered by a single planet in the 6th.
Long life, Argala and the A6
In the 8th-house chapter, BPHS Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7 lists long life when the 6th lord is in the 12th, or when the 6th lord is in the 6th while the 12th lord is in the 12th, or when the 6th and 12th lords are in the Lagna and the 8th. In Ch. 31, unobstructed Argala aspecting the 6th house denotes 'fear from enemies'; the Argala calculator works this out for every house. And Ch. 29 gives every house an Arudha; the Bhava Padas calculator shows yours for the 6th, labelled A6.
How this app computes and reads your 6th house
- Houses are whole-sign. The sign holding your Ascendant degree is the whole 1st house, and the sixth sign from it is the whole 6th. The methodology page explains how positions are calculated.
- The house card is titled 'Health & service' with the short line 'obstacles, daily work, conflict'. That wording follows the later, Bhrigu-style list, not BPHS Ch. 11.
- The tone of the card (favourable, neutral or testing) comes from one thing: the dignity score of the 6th lord in the sign it occupies. A well-dignified lord reads favourable, a poorly dignified one reads testing. The app does not apply the Bhrigu inversion, so a strong 6th lord is shown as support for the house's matters, not as more enemies.
- The house type shown is Dusthana. The engine tests Dusthana before Apoklima, so the 6th is labelled by its harder name even though it is also a cadent house. It does not carry a separate Upachaya label on the card.
- Planet-in-house lines come from the Bhrigu Sutras table. For the natural malefics in the 6th the favourable wording refers to the Upachaya idea explicitly, for example Saturn's 'exceptional resilience against obstacles, debt and rivals'.
- The whole reading sits on the Kundali page described under Kundali features, and you can ask about any line of it in the AI chat, which is grounded in the same computed chart.
Strength is a separate question from placement. The Shad Bala calculator gives each planet's six-fold strength, including the positional component in which a planet in an Apoklima such as the 6th receives the smallest share, and the Ashtakavarga calculator shows how many benefic points the sign of your 6th house holds.
Timing: when the 6th house becomes active
The dasha of the 6th lord
BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 gives a one-line effect for the dasha of each house lord. For the lord of Ari it is 'danger from enemies and ill health'. This app's line for the same period is deliberately lower in temperature: 'friction with rivals or health matters needing attention'. You can see which planet's period you are in with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, and the background is in what a Mahadasha is.
The preceding chapter says, at Ch. 47 Sl. 2-4, that dasha effects 'are in accordance with their strength'. The one-line effect is the general theme; the planet's dignity and placement decide how it lands. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 13 adds a specific condition: a planet associated with a lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th, and without an aspect from a trine lord, harms finances in its own dasha. The trine lord's aspect is the stated exception.
Any dasha lord placed in the 6th
The second route is placement. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 repeats one test for every planet: its dasha is favourable when it is in the Lagna or in its exaltation, own or a friendly sign, and unfavourable when it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or debilitated, or in an enemy's sign. The app implements exactly that. A Mahadasha lord sitting in your 6th house reads as 'testing' in the dasha effects and 'challenging' in the three-level dasha quality, whatever its sign. Sub-periods are covered in Antardasha and Pratyantar.
This is the one place where the engine sides fully with the Dusthana label over the Upachaya one. Saturn in the 6th gets a favourable planet-in-house line and an unfavourable dasha test at the same time. Each follows its own source.
Transits through the 6th from the Moon
Transits in this app are counted from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, so first find your Moon sign. The engine's Gochara rules, taken from Kannan's chapter on transits, give the 6th from the Moon two different readings. For the natural malefics (Sun, Mars, Rahu, Ketu and Saturn) the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th are the good positions. For the benefics (Jupiter, Mercury, Venus) the 3rd and 6th are 'indifferent'. So Saturn crossing the sixth sign from your Moon is shown as a supportive stretch of steady progress, while Jupiter there is shown as neutral. The Gochar calculator lists all nine for today.
The Moon's own transit matters on a shorter scale. When the Moon is passing through a Dusthana house on a given day, the daily guidance notes that decisions made under pressure tend to need revisiting. Longer windows are assembled on the timing page.
About the Marak chapter
BPHS Ch. 44, on death-inflicting planets, mentions the dasha of the 6th lord with sub-periods of the 6th, 8th and 12th lords. It is one item in a long conditional list about longevity that depends on the span of life calculated first. This app does not compute or state a time of death, and this page does not apply that sloka.
Common misreadings
- 'A planet in the 6th is ruined.' Saravali Ch. 30 gives the Sun, Mars and Saturn in the 6th strength, affluence and victory over enemies. The house is hard on benefics, not on everything.
- 'The 6th is simply a bad house.' BPHS Ch. 7 calls it a Dusthan and an Upachaya in consecutive sentences. Dropping either half misstates the text.
- 'A strong 6th lord protects you from enemies.' The Bhrigu Sutras say the opposite: a strong 6th lord increases enemies, a weak one destroys them. BPHS is not explicit either way. The claim cannot be made as settled doctrine.
- 'Vipareeta Raja Yoga is in Parashara.' Not in the chapters on this house. BPHS Ch. 24 reads the 6th lord in the 6th, 8th and 12th as mild to negative. The yoga is a real and widely used rule, but its authority is later practice.
- 'The 6th house is your job.' Service and employees come from the later lists. BPHS Ch. 11 gives livelihood and profession to the 10th house and gives the 6th enemies, ulcers and two relatives.
- 'The ages in Ch. 17 will happen.' Each age belongs to a combination of three or four conditions. A single matching factor does not trigger it, and this app does not use those ages at all.
Check it in your own chart
- Open the birth chart calculator with your date, exact time and place of birth. If the time is uncertain, read what an unknown birth time costs first; the 6th house can change with a shift of minutes near a sign boundary.
- Find the sign in your 6th house and its lord, using the table above.
- Note which house the 6th lord occupies and read the matching row of BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 61-72. Then check its company: Sl. 18 shows how much a benefic or a malefic alongside changes the result.
- Note any planets in the 6th and whether each is a natural malefic or a benefic. Compare the Saravali and Bhrigu rows.
- Look for Harsha Yoga and Shankh Yog in the yogas list.
- Check whether your current Mahadasha lord is the 6th lord, or sits in the 6th, in the dasha calculator.
- For a second opinion on the 6th lord's condition, look at the same planet in the Navamsa.
Questions people ask
- Is the 6th house good or bad?
- Both labels are in the primary text. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 lists it among the three evil houses (6th, 8th, 12th) and among the four Upachaya houses of growth (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th). In practice the sources are hard on benefics placed there and favourable to the Sun, Mars and Saturn placed there.
- What does an empty 6th house mean?
- Only that no planet occupies it. BPHS judges the house mainly through its lord: Ch. 17 opens with where the 6th lord sits. An empty 6th is read from the lord's house, sign, dignity and company, exactly as an occupied one is.
- Which planets do well in the 6th house?
- By Saravali Ch. 30, the Sun (affluent, a commander), Mars (strong, great among relatives) and Saturn (courageous, conquers many enemies). Mercury wins disputes and litigation in the same chapter but is prone to illness. The Bhrigu Sutras broadly agree and add that Rahu or Ketu there makes a person tolerant and happy.
- What happens when the 6th lord is in the 6th house?
- BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 66 says enmity with one's own kin, friendliness with others, and middling happiness in matters such as wealth. Ch. 17 Sl. 2 adds a bodily indication. This app also reports Harsha Yoga for that placement, a Vipareeta Raja Yoga read as gain that follows struggle. The two readings come from different layers of the tradition.
- Does the 6th house show my job?
- In the later tradition, yes: the Bhrigu Sutras commentary lists service, employees and subordinates under the 6th, and this app's house card is titled 'Health & service'. In BPHS Ch. 11 the 6th house list has no work in it at all; profession and livelihood are given to the 10th house.
- Does the 6th house show debt?
- The Bhrigu Sutras commentary lists debts under the 6th house. BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 lists debts under the 10th. Both statements are on record, and anyone who tells you there is a single classical answer is quoting only one of them.
- Is the Mahadasha of the 6th lord always difficult?
- BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 gives its general theme as danger from enemies and ill health. Ch. 47 says dasha effects follow the planet's strength, so its dignity and placement shape the outcome. For Taurus and Scorpio Ascendants the 6th lord is also the Lagna lord, which no single-line rule accounts for.
- Can the 6th house diagnose an illness?
- No. BPHS Ch. 17 links planets and signs to parts of the body and names conditions, and this page reports that as what the text says. It is not medical advice, and this app does not diagnose, predict or treat any condition. A health concern belongs with a doctor.
- Why does my 6th house differ in another app?
- Most often because of the house system. This app assigns whole signs as houses. Systems that divide the sky unequally can move a planet near a sign boundary into the 5th or 7th. A different ayanamsa or a birth time a few minutes off can also change the Ascendant sign, which shifts every house.
Birth Chart (Kundli)
All nine grahas by sign, degree and nakshatra, with houses when the birth time is known and the place resolves to coordinates.
