Mercury in the 6th house is the planet of speech in the house of enemies and disputes, and both texts read it as a winner of arguments. Saravali gives a native always successful in litigation and disputes, though prone to illness, indolent, harsh in speech and much insulted; the Bhrigu Sutras give one respected by the ruler, a writer, showy, proud and proficient in controversy, with obstacles in education. The 6th is the house where the texts usually read benefics poorly, and Mercury is the benefic that comes out mixed rather than harmed.
This page sets out those verses, the two labels the 6th carries at once, the Vipareeta yogas that form here for six rising signs, what Mercury owns from each, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mercury in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 6th house, Ari Bhava.
Sources, and health
Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The 6th house's own chapter is about disease, with named conditions and ages; this page names that material without reproducing it. Nothing here is medical advice.
Speech in the house of enemies
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 7 gives Ari Bhava the maternal uncle, doubts about death, enemies, ulcers and the step-mother; Ch. 17, its chapter, is about diseases and ulcers. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31 name it Ari, enemy, Vrana, wound, and Shatkona. The Bhrigu Sutras' modern list (p. 15) adds service, employees, debts and litigation, which is the later tradition: BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 puts debts in the 10th.
Mercury reaches this house through two of its own significations. Speech, BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13's governance for Mercury, is the instrument of the disputes and controversy both texts give it here; litigation is on the later list for the house. And BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 18-21 make Mercury the fixed significator of maternal relatives, while Sl. 22-24 read the maternal uncle from the 6th counted from Mercury. The maternal uncle is the first item on BPHS's list for the 6th house itself.
So the house and the planet share the maternal uncle by two different routes. A Mercury in the 6th house puts the significator of maternal relatives in the house BPHS reads for the uncle, and its own 6th, the house BPHS reads for the uncle from Mercury, falls in the 11th. The texts draw no conclusion from that double count, and this page draws none.
Two labels: Upachaya and Dusthana
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 put the 6th in three groups at once: Apoklima, Dusthana and Upachaya. Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 state the Dusthana consequence, that association with the Trikas inflicts evils. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 (printed "86-81") say benefics increase the potency of houses but prove adverse in the 6th, 8th and 12th. The Upachaya label points the other way, and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator, writing on Mars in the 6th (p. 53), notes that the 6th "while being an Upachaya house is also a Dusthana" and that the sutras "have apparently not taken this into account".
For benefics the Dusthana label wins in Saravali's readings: Venus has many foes and no wealth, the Moon is sick, Jupiter humiliated. Mercury's verses keep a real strength, success in disputes, beside the indolence, illness and insult. That fits the Upachaya idea partly; no text explains why Mercury is treated better than the other benefics here, and this page offers no reason.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 43
The verse in full: the native will always be successful in litigations and disputes, will contract diseases, be indolent, not given to anger, be harsh in speech and much insulted. No condition is stated. Harsh speech is notable for the planet of speech, and success in disputes is speech used against opponents.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 41-47
The sutras (p. 67): respected by the king; obstacles in education; showy, proud and very proficient in creating controversies; great favour from the king (the government) in the 30th year; a writer of letters and books. In a sign of Mars (Aries or Scorpio), a skin disease the text calls blue leprosy; with Saturn and Rahu, or Saturn and Ketu, rheumatism and shooting pains; quarrels with enemies of his own community, the stronger side decided by the 6th lord. The commentator (p. 67) calls the results mixed with the evil predominating. These are the text's statements, not medical advice. The engine's lines were written from the same chapter: favourable, "real favour from institutions and strength against rivals"; testing, "health strain and obstacles in education despite outward recognition". The testing line is the one the app prints, for the reason below.
Other Views (pp. 67-68). Brihat Jatak: without enemies. Phaldeepika: lazy, harsh-spoken, humiliating his enemies but fond of controversy. Chamatkar Chintamani: on bad terms with others, earning by his own effort. The book's own summary of Saravali here reads "victorious in the battlefield and free from diseases", which is not what the Saravali text in this app's corpus says ("will contract diseases"). The Note finds all agreed that the native is either without enemies or annihilates them. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.
| Source | Reading | Condition |

Mercury beside the other planets in the 6th
| Planet | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 7: strong, affluent, famous, a king or army chief | Many enemies but well off |
| Moon | Sl. 19: stomach ailments | Poor and unwell; strong with a benefic |
| Mars | Sl. 31: strong, tall, great among relatives | Famous, defeats enemies |
| Mercury | Sl. 43: successful in disputes; indolent, harsh in speech | Respected by the ruler, a writer, proficient in controversy |
| Jupiter | Sl. 55: humiliated, yet destroys enemies, famous | Destroys enemies; free from disease with a benefic |
| Venus | Sl. 67: many foes, lacking wealth | Destruction of enemies, wasteful expenditure |
| Saturn | Sl. 79: courageous, conquers many enemies | Destruction of enemies; with Mars a moderate Raja Yoga |
Read down the column, almost every planet defeats or destroys enemies in at least one text. Mercury is the one that does it by argument: litigation, disputes, controversy. It is also the only planet whose sutra names a profession, a writer, and the only one whose reading names education as the area that suffers (Saturn's sutra gives "little learning"). The Upachaya principle is visible in the column without anyone naming it; Mercury sits between the malefics who are read well and the benefics who are read poorly.
The Sun at sunset
Mercury is never more than one sign from the Sun, and the Sun's house follows the clock, the 7th around sunset. A Mercury in the 6th belongs to a birth with the Sun in the 5th, 6th or 7th, around sunset and the hours either side. With the Sun in the 5th, Mercury is in the 2nd from it and forms Vesi; with the Sun in the 7th, Vasi; Saravali Ch. 14 Sl. 3-5 and 7-9 read Vesi by Mercury as soft-spoken and a servant, Vasi by Mercury as sweet in speech and obedient to others' orders.
With the Sun in the 6th too, the Sun's own Saravali verse for the house is one of the best in the column (strong, affluent, famous), the engine counts the Sun among its malefics, and Mercury is often combust, which removes its position score in the engine's Shad Bala. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 4 reads the pair as in service, sweet in speech, with fame, money and learning, and unsteady wealth.
The Vipareeta yogas: six rising signs
This app's yogas calculator reports Harsha, Sarala and Vimala Yoga when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in one of those houses, reading each as a difficult house turning into an unexpected source of gain after struggle. Mercury rules two signs, so a Mercury in the 6th forms one for six rising signs.
| Ascendant | Mercury in | Mercury rules | Yoga the engine names | BPHS Ch. 24 for those lords in the 6th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Virgo (exalted) | 3rd, 6th | Harsha (6th lord) | Sl. 66: enmity with own kin, friendly to others. Sl. 30: at odds with siblings, affluent |
| Capricorn | Gemini (own) | 6th, 9th | Harsha (6th lord) | Sl. 66 as above. Sl. 102: meagre prosperity, troubled by enemies |
| Scorpio | Aries | 8th, 11th | Sarala (8th lord) | Sl. 90: wins over enemies; illness. Sl. 126: illness, foreign places |
| Aquarius | Cancer | 5th, 8th | Sarala (8th lord) | Sl. 90 as above. Sl. 54: children who behave like opponents |
| Cancer | Sagittarius | 3rd, 12th | Vimala (12th lord) | Sl. 138: enmity with own people. Sl. 30 as above |
| Libra | Pisces (debilitated) | 9th, 12th | Vimala (12th lord) | Sl. 138 as above. Sl. 102 as above |
The sourcing needs stating exactly: the engine's reference for Vipareeta Raja Yoga is a modern case book that names it without a numbered definition, and BPHS Ch. 24 reads the 6th lord in the 6th mildly (Sl. 66) and in the 8th and 12th negatively. There is no sign in Parashara's Ch. 24 that a Dusthana lord in a Dusthana produces a Raja Yoga. The app shows both readings, the yoga in its list and the placement in its row.
Aries rising is the striking row. Mercury is exalted in Virgo as the 6th lord in the 6th, so it is at once the strongest Mercury by dignity, a Harsha Yoga, and, by the Bhrigu Sutras' view, a problem: the Sun's and Venus's sutras for the 6th (pp. 24, 92) give more enemies when the 6th lord is strong or with a benefic and destruction of enemies when it is weak, and Mercury's own sutras make the stronger community depend on the 6th lord. BPHS states no such inversion. The app's house card does not apply it either and reads a strong 6th lord as support.
Gemini and Virgo rising: the Lagna lord in the 6th
For Gemini rising Mercury in the 6th is in Scorpio, and for Virgo rising in Aquarius; both make it the Lagna lord in the 6th. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 6 reads that as no physical happiness and trouble from enemies only if the Lagna lord is related to a malefic and has no benefic aspect; the bare placement is not enough, and that condition is the useful part.
BPHS Ch. 42, among its penury combinations, names two forms that a Lagna-lord Mercury in the 6th can take part in: the Lagna lord in the 6th with the 6th lord in the Lagna under a Marak lord's influence (Sl. 3), and the Lagna lord joined to the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th with no benefic aspect (Sl. 6). For Gemini the 6th lord is Mars, whose sign Mercury occupies; for Virgo it is Saturn, likewise. Each needs two or three conditions at once and none is triggered by a single planet in the 6th.
What Mercury owns, from the other rising signs
| Ascendant | Mercury's sign | Natural dignity | Mercury rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 6th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taurus | Libra | Friendly | 2nd, 5th | Sl. 18: with a benefic gains through enemies, with a malefic loss. Sl. 54 as above |
| Leo | Capricorn | Neutral | 2nd, 11th | Sl. 18 as above. Sl. 126 as above |
| Sagittarius | Taurus | Friendly | 7th, 10th | Sl. 78: friction with the spouse. Sl. 114: skilful yet short of wealth |
| Pisces | Leo | Friendly | 4th, 7th | Sl. 42: lacking maternal happiness, independent. Sl. 78 as above |
Sl. 18, the 2nd lord in the 6th, is the sloka that turns entirely on company: with a benefic, gains through enemies; with a malefic, loss through them. For Taurus and Leo rising Mercury is that 2nd lord, and Mercury's own nature also turns on company, so the same companion decides both. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
One exchange in the 6th house's own chapter involves Mercury for Leo rising. BPHS Ch. 17 Sl. 26 gives loss of wealth (in the 31st year, a timing this page does not use) when the 11th and 6th lords exchange signs. For Leo, Mercury is the 11th lord (and the 2nd), and in the 6th it sits in Capricorn, Saturn's sign; with Saturn, the 6th lord, in Gemini, the 11th, the exchange is complete, and the engine would report it as a Parivarthana Yoga. Ch. 24 Sl. 71 reads the 6th lord in the 11th the other way, as wealth through enemies; the two slokas describe the same pair of lords from opposite ends.
Saravali Ch. 26, Mercury by sign, adds the sign layer. Virgo (Aries rising): virtuous, eloquent, fond of argument, famous. Gemini (Capricorn rising): sweet in speech, an able speaker, fond of argument, proficient in work. Libra (Taurus rising): an able speaker, argumentative. Aries (Scorpio rising): very learned, drawn to argument. Pisces (Libra rising): without learning in shastra. Several rows name argument, which sits beside the 6th house's disputes; the sign readings make no reference to house, and this page does not merge them. Saravali Ch. 45 gives the dignity lines: exalted, intelligent, supreme in the family, a skilful speaker; debilitated, mean and at enmity with cousins and relatives.
Company, by Saravali Ch. 15: with the Sun (Sl. 4), in service with unsteady wealth; with the Moon (Sl. 9), skilled in poems and wealthy; with Mars (Sl. 13), little wealth, which Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 156) reads as "eloquent but disputative", good for lawyers; with Jupiter (Sl. 17), a scholar; with Venus (Sl. 18), very rich; with Saturn (Sl. 19), in debt, proud and deceiving. The Mars pairing is the one that names disputes, the 6th house's own subject.
Aspect, strength and wealth
From the 6th, aspectedHouses('mercury', 6) returns [12]: the 7th aspect on the 12th house, the other Trika house across the chart. Mercury is a benefic in this engine, so the aspect raises the aspect score of a planet there. Directional strength is near its lowest: BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measure it from the 7th, one house away, so this engine gives 0.67 of 4, and as an Apoklima the 6th gives a quarter of Kendradi Bal (Ch. 27 Sl. 5).
The Upachaya label still counts in two wealth rules. BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 6: very affluent when all three benefics are in Upachayas from the Moon. Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 32: benefics in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, from the Lagna or the Moon, all of them giving much wealth, two moderate, one little. A Mercury in the 6th counts toward both while the readings for the house itself are mixed; the sources leave that tension unresolved.
Two named combinations involve Mercury's lordships and the 6th. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 13-14, Shankh Yog, needs a strong Lagna lord and the 5th and 6th lords in mutual angles; Mercury is the 5th lord for Taurus and Aquarius and the 6th lord for Aries and Capricorn. And BPHS Ch. 17 Sl. 6-8 1/2 tie combinations of the Lagna lord, Mars, Mercury, the Moon, Rahu and Saturn to facial and skin conditions; BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 31 gives Mercury the skin. This page names those slokas without listing them. They are classical associations, not medical advice.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading's planet row is favourable only when dignity is strong and the house is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th, so a Mercury in the 6th always prints "health strain and obstacles in education despite outward recognition", even exalted for Aries rising. dashaQuality() rates a dasha lord in a dusthana challenging, following BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6.
This is the one place the engine sides fully with the Dusthana label over the Upachaya one. The Shad Bala does not read the house verdict, so a dignified Mercury in the 6th can show a high position score beside a testing row. The engine's house card for the 6th takes its tone from the 6th lord's dignity and does not apply the Bhrigu inversion. For Aries and Capricorn rising that lord is Mercury, in its own or exaltation sign, so the card reads favourable while the planet row reads testing.
Timing
Mercury has 17 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 66-70 give Mercury in Ari, Randhr or Vyaya a dasha of loss of wealth through indulgence, danger of theft, malevolence of the government and loss of land and cattle, with complaints this page does not repeat. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 say dasha effects follow strength, so the one-line theme is general and the planet's condition decides how it lands.
BPHS Ch. 58 reads several sub-periods in Mercury's dasha partly by the sub-lord's house counted "from the Lord of the Dasha", that is from Mercury (for example Sl. 41-44 for Mars): an angle, a trine or the 11th from Mercury reads well, the 6th, 8th or 12th from it does not. From a Mercury in the 6th house, planets in the 6th, 9th, 12th and 3rd houses are in angles from it, planets in the 10th and 2nd in trines, and a planet in the 4th is 11th from it; planets in the 11th, 1st and 5th houses are 6th, 8th and 12th from it. So a sub-lord in the Lagna reads poorly by this count from a 6th-house Mercury, whatever it reads from the Lagna.
For Aries and Capricorn rising it is also the 6th lord's period, which BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 head "danger from enemies and ill health" and this app words as "friction with rivals or health matters needing attention". BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 13 adds that a planet associated with a lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th, without a trine lord's aspect, harms finances in its own dasha. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Mercury Mahadasha page the sub-periods. For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Mercury in the 6th from the Moon is "indifferent" in the engine's benefic rule.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 20:17 IST on 17 September 2012 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Aries-rising case: Mercury exalted as 6th lord in the 6th, with Harsha Yoga. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Aries 11.64 deg |
| Mercury | Virgo 7.11 deg, 6th house, Exalted, combust; 3rd and 6th lord |
| Also in the 6th | Sun, Virgo 1.08 deg; Moon, Virgo 21.47 deg |
| Jupiter, Ketu | Taurus, 2nd house |
| Venus | Cancer 18.07 deg, 4th house |
| Mars, Saturn; Rahu | Libra, 7th (Saturn exalted); Scorpio, 8th |
| House line | Testing: phMercury6U |
| dashaQuality for Mercury | Challenging |
| Yogas reported (selection) | Harsha Yoga [Mercury] |
| Shad Bala (engine, of 20) | 6.04, Weak: position 0 (combust), aspect 3, natural 0.375, motion 1, direction 0.67, time 1 |
| Strength reason text | Exalted in Virgo, dusthana house (6th), combust, aspected by Jupiter |
| Dasha | Moon to 10 February 2014, then Mars to 2021 |
Every grade points a different way. The dignity is the best Mercury can have, the engine names Harsha, and Jupiter aspects Mercury from Taurus by its 5th-place aspect, giving the full aspect score. But the house makes the planet row testing and the dasha grade challenging, and the Sun at 5.86 degrees makes Mercury combust by both the engine's 14 degrees and the Bhrigu Sutras' 8.5 (p. 8), which takes the position score and leaves the total Weak.
The classical lordship readings split as well. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 66 gives the 6th lord in the 6th enmity with its own kin but friendliness to others; the Bhrigu view reads a strong 6th lord as more enemies; the engine's house card, reading Mercury's exaltation, is favourable. The Moon beside Mercury is a benefic in this engine, the companion that keeps Mercury a benefic by BPHS's rule; the Sun beside it is a malefic. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own chart
- Confirm Mercury is in the sixth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator, and note the combust flag and the Sun's house.
- Find what Mercury rules. If it is a 6th, 8th or 12th lord, look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala and read BPHS's own Ch. 24 sloka beside it.
- For Gemini and Virgo rising, read Ch. 24 Sl. 6 and its malefic-and-no-benefic-aspect condition.
- For Taurus and Leo rising, read Ch. 24 Sl. 18: Mercury's company decides gain or loss through enemies.
- Count the benefics in the Upachayas, from the Lagna and from the Moon, for the Dhana Yoga rules.
- Read the 6th house card beside the planet row; they use different tests.
How to weigh a yoga entry is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.
Over-readings
- "Mercury in the 6th makes a lawyer." The verses give success in disputes and proficiency in controversy; litigation is on the later list for the house, and no verse names that profession.
- "A benefic in the 6th is ruined." Saravali reads Mercury mixed here, with a real strength in disputes.
- "Exalted Mercury in the 6th is favourable in the app." The planet row is always testing in a dusthana.
- "Harsha Yoga cancels the 6th." BPHS Ch. 24 reads the 6th lord in the 6th mildly, and the yoga's authority is later practice.
- "A strong 6th lord protects from enemies." The Bhrigu Sutras say the reverse; BPHS is not explicit; the app's card reads strength as support.
- "Mercury in the 6th means illness." The verses name proneness to illness; the 6th house chapter's specific conditions need several factors, and none of it is medical advice.
Questions about Mercury in the 6th
- Is Mercury bad in the 6th house?
- Mixed. Saravali gives success in litigation and disputes with indolence and harsh speech; the Bhrigu Sutras give respect from the ruler and skill in controversy with obstacles in education. The general rule that benefics do poorly in the 6th applies only partly.
- Does Mercury in the 6th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
- For six rising signs this app names one: Harsha for Aries and Capricorn, Sarala for Scorpio and Aquarius, Vimala for Cancer and Libra.
- What does Mercury aspect from the 6th?
- Only the 12th house, by its 7th aspect.
- Why is the app's line always testing here?
- The planet row needs strong dignity and a house outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The 6th fails the second test for every sign.
- What links Mercury and the 6th house?
- Disputes, through Mercury's speech; and the maternal uncle, whom BPHS reads from the 6th house and from the 6th counted from Mercury, the significator of maternal relatives.
- Is the 6th a good or bad house for Mercury?
- Both labels apply: the 6th is an Upachaya and a Dusthana. The texts read malefics well and benefics poorly here, and Mercury comes out between.
- What if Mercury is my Lagna lord?
- For Gemini and Virgo rising, BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 6 reads the Lagna lord in the 6th as trouble from enemies only when it is related to a malefic and has no benefic aspect.
- Does BPHS Ch. 17 name Mercury?
- Its Sl. 6-8 1/2 tie combinations of the Lagna lord, Mars, Mercury, the Moon, Rahu and Saturn to facial and skin conditions, and Sl. 9-12 1/2 give Mercury with the 6th and 8th lords in the Lagna bilious diseases. This page names those slokas without listing them; they are not medical advice and the app does not apply them.
- Is a Mercury dasha difficult with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 66-70 give Mercury in the 6th an adverse dasha, and the app grades it challenging. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 add that effects follow strength.
