Mercury in the 5th house is a placement where the sources split, and the Bhrigu Sutras' own Note says so. Saravali gives a learned, happy native with many children, expert in mantras and malevolent spells; the Bhrigu Sutras (Sutras 38-40) give a highly intelligent, soft-spoken, wise native who has difficulty in having children. Both texts agree on the side of the house that is about the mind: learning, knowledge and intelligence, which BPHS lists for the 5th beside children.
This page sets out the two readings, the BPHS verses that name Mercury in or around the 5th, the yogas built on this house, what Mercury owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mercury in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 5th house, Putra Bhava.
Sources, and children
Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The texts speak about children, their number and the ages at which they arrive; this page reports where the texts disagree and computes none of it. Nothing here is a prediction about anyone's family.
The planet of intellect in the house of Dhi
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 gives Putr Bhava "amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty (or authority), fall of position". Seven items, one of them children, three about the mind. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31 name the house Putra and Pratibha and call it the only house connected with Dhi, intellect; BPHS Ch. 29 calls its Arudha the Mantra Pada.
Mercury's lists overlap the mental side closely. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 and 26 give Mercury speech and a facility with words of many meanings; Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13 give it the Veda, writing and expertise; the Bhrigu Sutras (p. 8) give it the part of the intellect "susceptible to cultivation through study". Saravali's verse for Mercury in the 5th then uses one of BPHS's own words for the house: "expert in mantras", the "sacred spells" of Ch. 11 Sl. 6.
The 5th is a trine and a Panaphara (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36), and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 make the lord of a trine auspicious and call the 5th and 9th "specially for wealth". Its fixed significator is Jupiter (Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34), which is why several rules in Ch. 16 (Sl. 12, 16, 18) check Jupiter as well as the house lord.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 42
The verse in full: the native will be an expert in Mantras (sacred spells) and Abhicara (malevolent spells), will have many sons, be endowed with learning, happiness and efficacy and be delighted. No condition is stated. The spells clause is reported as the text's, not as anything this app reads.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 38-40
The sutras (p. 66): the maternal uncle will suffer a serious throat trouble; happiness from the mother; difficulty in having children; highly intelligent, soft-spoken and wise. If the 5th lord is with malefics or weak, loss of children and a son by adoption; sinful, with belief in mantras. The commentator cannot see how the 5th bears on a maternal uncle, explains the difficulty by Mercury as a sexless planet, and says children will come if the 5th lord and Jupiter are strong and well placed. The engine's lines were written from the same chapter and carry the split: favourable, "sharp intelligence and, with the right support, real happiness through children"; testing, "real delay or difficulty in matters of children". The favourable line keeps intelligence unconditional and makes children conditional, which is where the two texts' agreement and disagreement lie.
Other Views (pp. 66-67). Brihat Jatak: a minister. Phaldeepika: happiness and glory through a brilliant intellect, many children, learned in mantra shastra. Chamatkar Chintamani: children late in life, selfish, a clever hypnotist. The Note names the split outright: Phaldeepika and Saravali give many children, the Bhrigu Sutras difficulty, and the commentator repeats that the 5th lord and Jupiter decide. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are not in this app's source texts; they are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

| This app, phMercury5U | Real delay or difficulty in matters of children | Any other dignity |
Saravali Ch. 34, and the Lajjit state
Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 give the simplest rule in any of these texts: if the 5th holds a benefic, is aspected by a benefic, or is a benefic's sign, the native "will surely beget children"; "if it is different, he will not obtain progeny"; and the 5th is to be counted from the Moon or the Ascendant, the stronger prevailing. Mercury is a benefic only in benefic company, by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 and Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, so whether a Mercury in the 5th meets Saravali's rule turns on who is with it. When Mercury rules the 5th (Taurus and Aquarius rising) the 5th is a benefic's sign whatever sits there.
BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 define one of the planetary states by this house. A planet in the 5th associated with Rahu or Ketu, or with the Sun, Saturn or Mars, is Lajjit, ashamed; Sl. 19-23 give a Lajjit planet in the 5th "destruction of progeny, or ... only one surviving child", and Sl. 24-29 add loss of intelligence among a Lajjit planet's effects, which cuts into the mental side too. For Mercury the Sun is the problem: Mercury is never more than one sign from it and shared its sign on 51.0 per cent of days in a century of this engine's positions. A Mercury in the 5th with the Sun also in the 5th is in the Lajjit state by that definition. This app does not compute avasthas.
That is one way the two readings can be held together. Saravali's verse and its Ch. 34 rule read a Mercury acting as a benefic; Ch. 45 and the sutras' difficulty fit a Mercury whose company, often the Sun, takes that away. The texts do not reconcile them this way themselves, and this page offers it only as a reading of which condition each text names.
The BPHS Ch. 16 verses that name Mercury
- Sl. 5-7: narrow cases built on a fallen 5th lord with Mercury and Ketu, or Mercury and Saturn, in the 5th, where the text speaks of a single child or of progeny after "a great deal of ordeal". This page names them without their details.
- Sl. 9: adoption when the 5th is owned by Saturn or Mercury and occupied or aspected by Saturn and Mandi. Mercury owns the 5th for Taurus and Aquarius rising.
- Sl. 12: many children if the 5th lord is strong and the 5th receives the aspect of strong Mercury, Jupiter and Venus. Mercury aspects the 5th only from the 11th, so a Mercury in the 5th does not supply that aspect.
- Sl. 16: children are obtained if the 5th lord is exalted, or in the 2nd, 5th or 9th, or joined or aspected by Jupiter. For Taurus rising Mercury is an exalted 5th lord in the 5th, which meets two of those alternatives at once.
Sl. 16 and Sl. 8 disagree about the 5th lord in the 5th (children obtained; issues with difficulty), and Ch. 24 Sl. 53 settles it with a condition: progeny if the lord there is related to a benefic, none if related to a malefic, and "virtuous and dear to friends" either way. For Taurus and Aquarius rising Mercury is that lord.
The chapter's opening rule, Sl. 1-3, adds a test that matters for Mercury in particular. If the 5th lord is combust, or weak and with malefics, the text gives the same harsh reading as for a 5th lord in a dusthana. For Taurus and Aquarius rising the 5th lord is Mercury, and Mercury is combust by this engine's 14-degree orb on 41.0 per cent of days in a century of positions. A Mercury in its own 5th with the Sun beside it can therefore be the exalted or own-sign 5th lord of Sl. 16 and the combust 5th lord of Sl. 1-3 at once. Ch. 16 is best read as a method, the lord's house, its condition and its link to the Lagna lord, rather than as single verses.
Jupiter is the other planet Ch. 16 keeps checking. Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 25-66 read Jupiter's aspect on Mercury favourably in every sign group, and Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 17 reads Mercury with Jupiter as a noted dancer, scholar, singer and instrumentalist, wise and happy. Jupiter aspects the 5th from the 1st, 9th or 11th; Sl. 16 counts a 5th lord joined or aspected by Jupiter among the conditions for children, so for Taurus and Aquarius rising a Jupiter aspecting Mercury in the 5th meets that clause.
Mercury beside the other planets in the 5th
| Planet | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 6: short of sons; scholarly | Wise and brilliant, few children |
| Moon | Sl. 18: many sons and friends, a scholar | Devoted in worship, a hard worker |
| Mars | Sl. 30: without happiness, wealth and sons | Few or no children, unless own sign or exalted |
| Mercury | Sl. 42: expert in mantras, many sons, learning | Highly intelligent, wise; difficulty in having children |
| Jupiter | Sl. 54: many sons and friends, learned | Intelligent, prosperous children |
| Venus | Sl. 66: sons and friends, a minister | Full of wisdom, a minister |
| Saturn | Sl. 78: short of sons and intelligence | Childless and poor; daughters in own sign |
The column reads the benefics well in both texts and the malefics badly for children while often keeping the intelligence. Mercury is the benefic that breaks the pattern in the Bhrigu column on children, though not on intelligence. Among the benefics it is also the only one whose Saravali verse names a skill of the house's own list, mantras, rather than a general quality.
Wealth and Raja Yogas through the 5th
BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 2-8 build all seven Great Affluence yogas on an own-sign planet in the 5th with named planets in the 11th. Sl. 3 is Mercury's: Mercury in its own sign in the 5th with the Moon, Mars and Jupiter in the 11th, which can occur only for Taurus rising (Mercury in Virgo) and Aquarius rising (Mercury in Gemini). The engine checks all seven exactly as written. The coincidence needed is rare by design; Mercury in the 5th aspects the 11th, where the three named planets must be.
BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 33-34 call the 9th lord a minister "and more especially Putr's Lord", and give a kingdom when the 5th and 9th lords aspect each other, join, or face each other. This app reports a Raja Yoga when the 5th and 9th lords share a house. Mercury is the 5th lord for Taurus and Aquarius and the 9th lord for Libra and Capricorn, so a Mercury in the 5th forms it with the partner beside it: Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Venus for Aquarius and Capricorn. The yogas calculator lists it. BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that the 5th and 9th lords bestow wealth in their dashas.
Ch. 39 Sl. 3-5 judge Raj Yogas from the Lagna lord and the 5th lord (and from the Atma and Putra Karakas), and Sl. 6-7 call their exchange of signs a Maha Raj Yog. A Mercury in the 5th is half of that exchange for the two Lagnas where it is the Lagna lord: Gemini rising, with Mercury in Libra and Venus, the 5th lord, in Gemini; and Virgo rising, with Mercury in Capricorn and Saturn, the 5th lord, in Virgo. The engine reports a sign exchange as a Parivarthana Yoga; the Ch. 39 name and grading are not computed.
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 19-20 define Sharad Yog, one form of which is Jupiter or Mercury in a trine from the Moon with Mars in the 11th; the other puts the 10th lord in the 5th with Mercury in a Kendra and a strong Sun in Leo. A Mercury in the 5th from the Lagna is in a trine from the Moon only when the Moon is in the 1st, 5th or 9th. detectYogas has no Sharada rule.
What Mercury owns, from each rising sign
Mercury is in your 5th when it occupies the fifth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. Learning appears in the lords-in-the-5th slokas of Ch. 24 as often as children.
| Ascendant | Mercury's sign | Natural dignity | Mercury rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 5th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Leo | Friendly | 3rd, 6th | Sl. 29: has sons, virtuous. Sl. 65: fluctuating finances; happy and kind |
| Taurus | Virgo | Exalted | 2nd, 5th | Sl. 17: wealthy, intent on earning. Sl. 53: progeny if related to a benefic |
| Gemini | Libra | Friendly | 1st, 4th | Sl. 5: honourable, dear to the king. Sl. 41: happy, liked by all |
| Cancer | Scorpio | Neutral | 3rd, 12th | Sl. 29 as above. Sl. 137: short of sons and of learning |
| Leo | Sagittarius | Neutral | 2nd, 11th | Sl. 17 as above. Sl. 125: happy, educated, religious |
| Virgo | Capricorn | Neutral | 1st, 10th | Sl. 5 as above. Sl. 113: all kinds of learning, with sons |
| Libra | Aquarius | Neutral | 9th, 12th | Sl. 101: sons and prosperity, learned. Sl. 137 as above |
| Scorpio | Pisces | Debilitated | 8th, 11th | Sl. 89: dull-witted, limited children; long-lived, wealthy. Sl. 125 as above |
| Sagittarius | Aries | Neutral | 7th, 10th | Sl. 77: honourable, all virtues. Sl. 113 as above |
| Capricorn | Taurus | Friendly | 6th, 9th | Sl. 65 as above. Sl. 101 as above |
| Aquarius | Gemini | Own | 5th, 8th | Sl. 53 as above. Sl. 89 as above |
| Pisces | Cancer | Enemy | 4th, 7th | Sl. 41 as above. Sl. 77 as above |
The learning slokas cluster in this table: the 10th lord in the 5th gives "all kinds of learning" (Virgo and Sagittarius rising), the 11th lord makes one educated (Leo, Scorpio), the 9th lord learned (Libra, Capricorn). The two lords that dull the house both appear too: the 8th lord takes wit (Scorpio, Aquarius) and the 12th lord learning (Cancer, Libra). Scorpio rising puts a debilitated Mercury in the 5th carrying the 8th, the least favourable row on every count.
Aquarius rising is the internally divided row: Mercury is in its own sign as 5th lord in the 5th, the Great Affluence sign, and also the 8th lord, which Sl. 89 reads as dull-witted with limited children. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 41-42 say Mercury gives "meddling effects" for Aquarius, and Sl. 23-24 call it somewhat inauspicious for Taurus.
The Sun in the evening, and the aspect on the 11th
Mercury's closeness to the Sun also fixes the time of day. The Sun's house follows the clock, the 7th around sunset and the 4th around midnight, so a Mercury in the 5th belongs to a birth with the Sun in the 4th, 5th or 6th: from the evening into the middle of the night. With the Sun in the 4th, Mercury is in the 2nd from it and forms Vesi; with the Sun in the 6th, Vasi. Saravali Ch. 14 Sl. 3-5 and 7-9 read Vesi by Mercury as soft-spoken, modest, a servant in penury, and Vasi by Mercury as sweet in speech, obedient to others' orders.
From the 5th, aspectedHouses('mercury', 5) returns [11]: the 7th aspect on the 11th house, the house of gains and the house where the Great Affluence planets must sit. Mercury is a benefic in this engine, so the aspect raises the aspect score of a planet there. Directional strength is low: BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures it from the 7th, and the 5th is two houses away, so this engine gives Mercury 1.33 of 4.
Saravali Ch. 26, Mercury by sign: Virgo (Taurus rising) virtuous, eloquent, skilled in writing and the arts; Gemini (Aquarius rising) an able speaker and poet; Libra (Gemini rising) knows the arts, honours the wise; Leo (Aries rising) famous, without wisdom, weak memory; Sagittarius (Leo rising) learned in Veda and shastra, a teacher; Pisces (Scorpio rising) without learning in shastra. Several rows bear on the 5th's learning; the sign readings make no reference to house.
Saravali Ch. 15's Mercury pairs put the Lajjit companions in their own words: with the Sun (Sl. 4), in service, sweet in speech, with fame, money and learning, and unsteady wealth; with Saturn (Sl. 19), an able poet but in debt, proud and deceiving; with Mars (Sl. 13), an unlucky wife, little wealth, an architect. The benefic companions read toward learning: with Jupiter a scholar, with Venus a student of the Vedas, with the Moon skilled in poems and fables. Each pair keeps some skill or learning, which is the 5th house's side the two main texts agree on.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Mercury's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 5th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides, and the app adds no aspects or conjunctions to the verdict. The dignity function receives the chart, so friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.
- Always favourable: Taurus (exalted) and Aquarius (own).
- Never favourable: Scorpio (debilitated) and Pisces (Cancer, Neutral at best).
- Favourable with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Aries, Gemini and Capricorn (otherwise Neutral; for Aries rising the lord is the Sun, so the Sun beside Mercury in Leo drops it), and Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra and Sagittarius (otherwise Enemy sign).
BPHS Ch. 7 assigns sons and grandsons to the Saptamsa (D7), which the Saptamsa calculator computes, and the Putra Karaka appears in the Char Karakas calculator. The planet row reads neither.
Timing
Mercury has 17 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65 name Putr, the 5th, among the positions for which Mercury's dasha brings wealth, reputation, better knowledge, favour from the government, happiness from wife and children and profit in business, with the 11th and 9th. So a Mercury in the 5th meets that list by house, whatever its sign. The sub-period chapters list the 5th with the angles and the 9th among good positions for a sub-lord.
For Taurus and Aquarius rising it is also the 5th lord's period, which BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 head "progress in educational sphere and happiness from the children", one of the plainly good lines in that list, and this app words as "progress in education and happiness through children". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Mercury Mahadasha page the sub-periods. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Mercury in the 5th from the Moon is favourable in the engine's benefic rule.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 22:09 IST on 29 September 2011 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Taurus-rising case: Mercury exalted as 5th lord in the 5th, with the Sun beside it. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Taurus 25.36 deg |
| Mercury | Virgo 12.87 deg, 5th house, Exalted, combust; 2nd and 5th lord |
| Also in the 5th | Sun 12.18 deg; Venus 24.12 deg (Debilitated); Saturn 24.37 deg (combust) |
| Moon | Libra 13.85 deg, 6th house |
| Mars; Jupiter | Cancer 12.40 deg (Debilitated), 3rd; Aries 14.80 deg (retrograde), 12th |
| Rahu; Ketu | Scorpio, 7th; Taurus, 1st |
| House line | Favourable: phMercury5F |
| dashaQuality for Mercury | Good |
| Yogas reported (selection) | Raja Yoga [Mercury, Saturn]; Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga [Saturn, Saturn] |
| Shad Bala (engine, of 20) | 5.21, Weak: position 0 (combust), aspect 1.5, natural 0.375, motion 1, direction 1.33, time 1 |
| Dasha | Rahu to 16 January 2020, then Jupiter to 2036 |
The lordship rules are strong: Mercury is an exalted 5th lord in the 5th, meeting two of Ch. 16 Sl. 16's alternatives, and Saturn, the 9th and 10th lord for Taurus, sits with it, so the engine reports its 5th-and-9th Raja Yoga. It also lists Dharma-Karmadhipati with Saturn named twice: for Taurus one planet owns both the 9th and the 10th, and the engine treats Saturn in the 5th as the two lords together.
The company is the opposite of what Saravali's benefic rule asks. The Sun is 0.52 degrees from Mercury and Saturn also shares Virgo, so by BPHS Ch. 45 Mercury in the 5th with the Sun and Saturn is in the Lajjit state, and by Ch. 24 Sl. 53 the 5th lord in the 5th is related to malefics. Combustion takes the whole position score, leaving a Weak total. Ch. 41 Sl. 3's Great Affluence needs the Moon, Mars and Jupiter in the 11th; none is there. The dasha runs Rahu, then Jupiter, so Mercury's own period is far off. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own chart
- Confirm Mercury is in the fifth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator, and note where the Sun is and whether Mercury is combust.
- List Mercury's company: the Sun, Saturn, Mars or the nodes make the Lajjit state of BPHS Ch. 45.
- Apply Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 from the Lagna and from the Moon: a benefic in, aspecting or owning the 5th.
- Find the 5th lord and read Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 and 16 for it, and Jupiter's condition as the karaka.
- Read both Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Mercury rules.
- Look for the 5th-9th Raja Yoga and, for Taurus and Aquarius rising, the Great Affluence entry.
How to weigh a yoga is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.
Over-readings
- "Mercury in the 5th means many children." That is Saravali; the Bhrigu Sutras expect difficulty. The texts disagree.
- "Mercury in the 5th means no children." The sutras say difficulty, Saravali many; BPHS makes children depend on the 5th lord, Jupiter and benefic influence.
- "A favourable app line settles children." The line keeps intelligence firm and makes children conditional on support.
- "Exalted Mercury in the 5th is clean." In the worked chart it is exalted, combust, Lajjit by Ch. 45, and with Saturn.
- "Mercury in the 5th is a wealth yoga." Ch. 41 Sl. 3 needs Mercury in its own sign with three named planets in the 11th.
- "The 5th is only children." BPHS lists learning, knowledge, spells and authority beside sons.
Questions about Mercury in the 5th
- Is Mercury good in the 5th house?
- For the mind, both texts are favourable. For children they split: Saravali gives many, the Bhrigu Sutras expect difficulty. BPHS Ch. 47 lists the 5th among Mercury's good positions for its dasha.
- What is the Lajjit state?
- BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-23: a planet in the 5th associated with Rahu, Ketu, the Sun, Saturn or Mars, given "destruction of progeny, or ... only one surviving child". A Mercury in the 5th with the Sun meets it. The app does not compute avasthas.
- Which wealth yoga uses Mercury in the 5th?
- BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 3: Mercury in its own sign in the 5th with the Moon, Mars and Jupiter in the 11th. It can arise only for Taurus and Aquarius rising.
- What does Mercury aspect from the 5th?
- Only the 11th house, by its 7th aspect.
- Why is my Mercury in the 5th marked testing?
- Its dignity label is not Exalted, Own or Friendly. Scorpio rising (debilitated) and Pisces rising (Cancer) never get the favourable line.
- Can Mercury in the 5th form a Raja Yoga?
- With the partner lord beside it: Saturn for Taurus and Libra rising, Venus for Aquarius and Capricorn rising. The app reports a Raja Yoga when the 5th and 9th lords share a house.
- Does Mercury in the 5th mean intelligence?
- Saravali says learned, the Bhrigu Sutras say highly intelligent, soft-spoken and wise, the app's line says sharp intelligence, and BPHS lists learning and knowledge in the 5th. BPHS Ch. 45 adds loss of intelligence for a Lajjit planet here.
- Is a Mercury dasha good with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65 name the 5th among Mercury's good positions. The app grades the period by dignity.
